Not for everyone
Well I had really high hopes when I got this for Christmas... and even before I tried it for the first time I read through all of these ratings and followed what many were saying are the 'tricks'. I have had it now for over half a year and tried to use it probably about 10 times and have yet to get a pot to brew correctly. Every single time to filter clogs, not allowing but only 1/4 or so of the coffee to come back down. I have set my coffee grinder to max coarse all these times, and no I dont store my beans in freezer or refigerator. I make sure the rubber seal is seated good and I have also tried overfilling the lower carafe with water per suggestion here. I have also put it back on the heat momentarily to try to unclog it, but it still will only drain down maybe an inch at most after removing.
Where do I start...
I purchased this unit a few weeks ago, and it's been trouble ever since.I think I managed to get one decent cup of coffee out of it, but not as good as my old fashioned percolator.
Great Tasting Coffee!
Because this coffeemaker was unavailable for a while I was waiting for it with some anticipation. My patience was well rewarded with some fine tasting cups of coffee!

Great but Fragile
I've had like 5 of these and I love the coffee but this last one was broken in a week.Switch went bad, which is a common problem and I have to hold the switch to allow it to brew.
Great coffee pot
We have had our Bodum Santos for about 1 1/2 years and have really enjoyed it.Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it makes excellent coffee.I have read other reviews that have said it is hard to clean but we have found that if you rinse and dry the upper bowl after each use and use the company's cleaner every couple of months, it actually is easier to clean than traditional coffee makers that always seem to collect mineral deposits and water spots.We have the orange model.

Great coffee -- less than great construction
I have had this coffee maker since 2/03 and the coffee is just great.I've often referred to it as a "fire and forget French press."If you watch the cooking process, which is fascinating in its own right, you can see that the steps for making coffee with a French press are essentially followed.The differences are that you don't have to "do" anything and there is very little sediment at all.

Uses Twice as Much Coffee as a French Press
See other reviews for a description of overall performance and cleaning. Cool design, but overpriced and requires the use of nearly twice as much coffee to arrive at a similar strength to that typical of a french press. I only used this coffee maker 3 times, and reverted to the press.
Buy this coffeemaker!
...but invest in a soft spongy brush for the carafe and a smaller skinny brush for the tube inside.The Santos makes the best cup of joe I've ever had and although I was skeptical after several weeks of researching and reading customer reviews it's not that hard to clean if you spend an extra $5 on the right tools.
A little extra effort, but well worth it.
I have to start by saying I got a great deal on this machine.I already wanted one and the Bodum store in Dallas was closing so I got it for 50% off along with a grinder and other Bodum goodies..I have to agree with other reviewers issues with cleaning. It is a bit of a pain but I've found that a bottle cleaner with just a sponge tip--NO SCRUBBER-IT SCRATCHES--works just fine.I put the funnel in the dishwasher about once a month.I've found that the grounds will dry faster and be easier to clean out of the funnel when the coffee isn't piled on the filter before brewing.

How to ruin a dinner party
I bought this coffeemaker in January, 2006. I really wanted it because it was the only brewer i found with an adjustable warmer. I hate the taste of burned coffee and this was a perfect solution. I read reviews about leaking, but had already decided I loved the machine, and discounted those. BIG mistake. I finally gave it an unceremonious funeral when I had 10 people for dinner. After dinner we were chatting while the coffee brewed. I came in to the kitchen when I heard the finish beep, and found 12 cups of coffe all over the kitchen. This was the last straw--i trashed it at that moment (although one of my guests suggested wrapping it up nicely and giving it to someone I don't like--maybe the dope dealer down the street?). I had been through all the "tricks" -- proper cleaning, minutely aligning the spout, shimming the pot to make it absolutely level.. yada yada... WAY too much trouble for a pot that while not the most expensive coffeemaker, not cheap either. Why not have a coffee maker that simply does what it is supposed to do? Make coffee which arrives from the tank into the pot?!? I decided I'd had enough of coffee makers which burn and spill coffee... I added up how much i had spent on coffee makers in the past three years, and decided that you get what you pay for... So I splurged on a Capresso MT500 with a thermal pot. It is a dream! and if i keep it for three years (which I fully intend) I will have spent no more on it than the collection of lousy coffee makers of the three years past. The coffee stays hot in the thermos (and unlike some coffeemakers which don't make the coffee hot enough, the Capresso is just right and stays so until the pot is gone--about 2 hours in my home). And I don't have to go through contortions to make it do what it's supposed to do.

Wow Im glad I never read the reviews before I bought mine!
I went to Kohls to buy a new pot when my old one lost its little mind and starting turning out burnt nasty coffee. I didn't want to spend the money but the appearance of this pot is what initially grabbed me. (I only spent 49.99 for it at a Kohls sale)
Want to stop this coffee maker from leaking? -- Clean it!

First off, it uses an electric vacuum brewing process, and secondly it lets you watch the whole thing. Fill the jug with cold filtered water, and place it on the power base. Then twist the funnel onto the jug. Next, add fresh coffee (a handy scoop is included) to the funnel and press the start button. As the water heats up to boiling, the vacuum created between the two parts moves water up the funnel, where the hot water and coffee mix together. I have had a mini-Bodum for about 5 years.It brews an excellent pot of coffee--although I find the measure spoon (1 measure per cup) is too strong for my taste--I use about 1/3 less.(I get the best results with Starbucks Verona coffee ground on no. 5 setting.)

It's just the best coffee!
After years of being a 5 or 6 cup a day person, 4 years ago I got the big Santos and discovered what great coffee the vacuum process makes. So good that I find I only want 1 cup in the morning now. The automatic drip "brown water" we have at work just isn't worth drinking after a good cup of coffee.

Overpriced/Inferior
This product is certainly not worth the money I paid for it.I am so sorry I never read the reviews.It does not keep the coffee warm, it has not brewing timer, nor does it have a shut-off timeer.For this price, it should have all of this but the worst of it is it does not keep the coffee warm.
Piece of junk :-(
We purchased this thinking it would be a great coffee maker and it is junk.The hoppers that hold the coffee don't pivot out from the maker they sit on top of the carafes. When you are making your coffee in the morning you have the two carafes, two hoppers, two bags of coffee and the grinder out at the same time. When the coffee is brewed you remove the carafe and hopper together and try to pour a cup of coffee holding the dripping hopper in one hand over the cup and pour out of the carafe at the same time.The hoppers don't have a drip stop feature.The carafes are open and have separate lids.I've had inexpensive makers that had drip stop, integral carafe lid and pivoting hoppers.I have not had the cold coffee problems other report.I was very disappointed in this piece of crap from France.

My husband and I received this coffeemaker as a gift for Christmas.My husband wanted the dual caraffe that it touts.However, our previous coffeemaker had a timer and a one minute "sneak a cup" feature.I believe this machine is slower than what we had prior.I also have a problem with the temperature of the coffee.To boast that you blend a better cup of coffee doesn't matter if I end up putting my cup of cold coffee in the microwave to heat it up!I'm very dissatisfied with this machine.I expected more from KRUPS and can't believe the price.It is not worth it. ... It was discontinued because of mechanical problems, but being a sucker for gadgets I bought mine anyway. For years I've had to buy a new coffee brewer about every 6 months to a year. I've now had this machine for over 3 years and have not had a single problem. No filters to mess with. Great tasting coffee - and something interesting to watch if you're into that sort of thing. So what's five stars?
Try cold-brew coffee. "Toddy" is the one I know and use. Cold brewing reveals flavors in good coffee that you never knew were there,(such as amazingly strong chocolate undertones), and eliminates the undesireable 'bite' from less-good coffees.The extremely low acidity allows you to makestronger coffee with no harshness. I tend to put cream in my coffee, but with cold-brew, none is needed.

Fantastic coffee - picked up on clearance - great surprise!
I have been looking for a way to replicate the taste and temperature of the superb coffee made by the coffee houses for a long time. I was in a SAAN store in a small town in Alberta over Christmas and noticed that these machines were on for $39.99.Not being familiar with them, I was curious, but didn't pick one up.Just this morning, I decided to see if the SAAN near me had any - I bought the last one on the shelf.Apparently the inventory that they received sold quickly.I am now sipping a tasty, hot, smooth cup of coffee almost identical to one that comes in a paper cup for over $2.And I have learned that this machine is discontinued.What a find. Highly recommended.

I have a question for Bodum
I spent many hours researching vacuum pots before I decided to buy this product, I was aware of all the potential weaknesses and remedies, so I took a chance. I was very happy, I wondered why I had wasted so many years drinking lousy coffee from drip pots and the expensive Bunn machine. With a little tweak, I was able to prolong the brewing cycle and maximize the Santos greatest potential.I have since recommended it to many people, and had I written a review then, I'd have given it a 5-star. But I'm giving it a 3-star now, you can see something happened.
Excellent Coffee that can't be made using Auto-drip machine
This is an awesome coffee maker. The coffee it brews is top-notched and free of undesirable sourness. In order to lengthen the contact time in the upper compartment, one has to tilt the coffee maker by putting 2-3 US quarters in the 12'o clock position given that the handle of the maker is considered to be the 6'o clock position.Doing so can delay the automatic shutoff by the machine by 40 sec, which is a very significant increase in contact time.It just be the brew stronger and better.
Makes great coffee and a sight for sore eyes!!
My old coffee maker was pretty beaten up after I had used it for almost 3 years, so I decided to get a new one. Only this time, I decided to buy it myself rather than waiting for the next Christmas. I was browsing around and I stumbled at Santos. My coffee maker was the dripping kind, so I wasn't sure at first that I wanted to get a vacuum coffee maker. But hey, what's the harm, I like to try new stuff. So, I finally decided to give it a try, especially it got a lot of good reviews.

Great Coffee, Bad Durability
Well, this machine makes a SUPER cup of coffee .. when it works.We had our first one for about 9 months and loved it, but then the heating element went out, so we had to buy another.THe first one we got brewed on a short cycle (this is a known fault). I've forgotten the exact numbers, but it took our machine 1/3 the time to brew ... this results in very thin coffee, unless you PILE on the grounds.
Great Coffee....if you only make a pot a day
If you love great coffee and only drink a pot a day, then this is the coffee maker for you.The taste of the coffee is fabulous!
