4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and less pricey now...alternatives
My friends have one of these that I've used and it is very nice, but I could not handle the price (a year or more ago). After some searching, I found the Hitachi RZST10Y fuzzy rice cooker and ordered it at $89.They have only 1 US reseller so far as I can tell.It has been great. The same "fire-and-forget" function. Now that Zojirushi prices aren't quite so inflated, I would consider them next time. But hmmm., I did not know until I stopped here that the "Z" models will need to have their internal battery surgically replaced in future.I need to see if the Hitachi has a user-replaceable battery. That was something I was not aware of with these and not sending it back to NYC in 3 years would be a plus :)
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect rice and porridge every time
This product rates five stars because it does what it is supposed to: turn out perfectly cooked rice as and when you want it, every time you use it. The non-stick bowl is easy to clean, and the inner lid, while not non-stick, at least pops out easily and gets clean with a little elbow grease, although I would highly recommend spraying it with non-stick spray before cooking anything sticky (like oatmeal). I will say, however, that after reading the reviews here I was expecting the rice this cooker produced to be a revelation. And, in fact, the rice this cooker makes tastes... like rice.Exactly the same as properly cooked rice on the stove top. It's that "properly cooked" part that is the beauty of using a rice maker. No more forgetting the rice is on the stove and boiling the water out or getting the timing wrong. With a rice cooker you add the desired quantity of rice, the appropriate amount of water for the type of rice and the texture you want, press a button and you get perfect rice without ever having to worry about it overcooking. When the water is gone the machine switches automatically to "keep warm" mode and will keep the rice perfectly warm and fluffy for hours.Or you can reheat it if you need it just-finished hot.You can get the same safety zone by baking your rice in the oven, but what a waste of energy.A rice machine takes up less space than a food processor, doesn't heat up the kitchen and uses far less engergy than the oven.So it's a worthwhile investment if you like rice. The real question is whether you need to spend the extra C-note to get a neuro fuzzy cooker.
5-0 out of 5 stars The cooked rice smells good to heaven
It's really my pleasure to cook with this rice cooker.I always set the cook time as 6:30AM, the tasty smell just sweetened my dream, I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Rice Cooker Ever
My fiance is Thai, and I almost made a big mistake by purchasing the 'wrong kind' of rice cooker! So, I did some more research before I purchased and wound up with buying the Zojirushi NH-VBC18, and she could not be happier. This unit does alot more than just 'cook rice'. It does soups, and just about anything else you want to put in it. It also cooks evenly, as advertised. The 'keep warm' feature for rice works great and keeps the rice fresh all day. Its so simple to use, that even I can do it! Looks nice on the counter too!

1-0 out of 5 stars Quality Control Failure ?
I just finished returning the replacement for this cooker from amazon. The first one did not work for anything other than white rice and the second one has an out of control touchpad that spontaneously starts beeping all of a sudden. Looks like Zojirushi maybe having some quality control issues, according to even the Amazon customer service. Only saving grace is the fact that Amazon has been very good about the return process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great rice cooker
I have been having some bad luck with rice cookers in recent times. Some of then were really bad; finally I made the transition to a Zojirushi. I had one of their lower end model and was perfectly happy with it, until one day my daughter decided to experiment with the rice cooker and break it. Finally I bought the NH-VBC18 much agains the wishes of the family. But now that we have started using it, everyone loves the end product. I have cooked the soft, medium and hard version of the white rice and it's excellent. I have nothing but prise for this product. This is a excellent choice and would recomend it over any other rice cooker. I have been using this cooker everyday for the last 3 months with no issues at all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value rice cooker.
I live in Japan and have owned several rice cookers. I wanted to buy one for my mother in the USA. Bowl construction is a key factor and the highest quality models in Japan have specially constructed, really thick bowls. This cooker was advertised as having an "extra thick" bowl. I was dissapointed to find out that the bowl was not near as thick as Japanese models. I don't know how the bowl will hold-up in the long run but the cooker does make very good rice. For occasional use this one should be fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS THING IS A GENIUS!
Being Japanese doesn't make me an expert in rice, but I can tell the difference in brands of rice and how recently it was harvested.I've recently been eating this high-tech microwave rice from Japan because my rice cookers have been failing to make really good rice (all three of them).
4-0 out of 5 stars great cooker

5-0 out of 5 stars The best !
This is the most used kitchen appliance in our home. When my mother-in-law gave it to us years ago (when Black & Decker first started making them), we thought of it as an "extra" that we didn't need. How wrong we were! It's the only way we steam veggies. We've given them as gifts to friends and all 3 of our daughters-in-law. Now we are building a new home and would like a new steamer for our new kitchen. Unfortunately, we cannot find a store that carries this indispensable appliance (why?!), so we will definitely buy one online.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've worn two out already!
I grew up with this steamer. When I went away to college I wore it out! When I graduated and got married I wore out another one before our first year was done.I am currently on my third and have been gentle with it since they seem to be getting harder and harder to find. But this is a fantastic product and I'd recommend it to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Item
Great item that has now become an essential item in my kitchen. My only problem with it is that if you are not careful when you are handling it, you may catch a blast of steam into your face as it gets very hot quickly.A really great item for the value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a small family
The best cooker I have bought till now. However, it is good for a max of 3 cups (not 3.3 as it says), it spills after that.
5-0 out of 5 stars rice cooker
This rice cooker is the perfect size for a single or couple. You will not have to throw away extra rice.It makes excellent rice in a short amount of time.I would recommend this rice cooker to anyone that has a small family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Rice Cooker For Smaller Quantities of Rice
Works just fine. It's simple and basic, and good for cooking small quantities of rice.Just right for 2, or maybe up to 4, people. The non-stick coating makes for easy cleanup. And since it doesn't have a "warm" feature, there's even less chance of rice sticking to the bottom. The warm feature isn't really needed, since one islikely to use up what's been cooked during one's meal, before the rice gets cold.

1-0 out of 5 stars excellent cooker
I have been using this cooker for last one month and it is awesome. Earlier also I used this cooker and ordered the same one. Amazon is doing great service with online shopping. I will continue to do Amazon online shopping and advise others also.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Rice Cooker
I have an older rice cooker from panasonic. Its made of aluminium & is pain to clean after cooking. This one has a non-stick pan & works GREAT !! It comes with a spatula to serve rice & a measuring cup. Overall, A good buy for the price paid.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is good product
I have used couple of branded Rice cookers earlier, I found Panasonic SR-G18BG 10 Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer is the best one.

Editorial Review

"Micom" means this sleek rice cooker is computer-controlled and ultra high-tech, from its spherical, nonstick pan to its "surround heating" system to its LCD clock and timer. (Program the cooker in the morning and have hot rice available immediately after work.) It not only cooks up to 3 cups of dry rice, but offers a choice ofwhite/brown, mixed, sweet, and porridge settings. A quick-cooking option cuts time by 10 minutes. Rice is automatically kept at warm for hours, and a reheat feature brings it back to serving temperature. Instructions and a cooking chart explain everything. At 10-3/4 by 8-1/2 by 8 inches, it's remarkably compact and also lightweight. Transport it by its handle. Cord retracts for storage. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great rice but you'll have to be patient
I had a cheap rice cooker which I used several times a month, but one night while scraping the stuck-on rice off the aluminum pan I promised myself I'd splurge and get a nicer cooker with a non-stick pan.I browsed the Amazon pages and read the glowing reviews here and bought this machine. We've had it about 3 months now and it does indeed make great rice.We make meals for 2 people so the size is perfect. It's small and light, and with the retractable cord it's easy to store under the counter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Zojirushi Rice Cooker is a 5 star machine.
This rice cooker makes perfect rice every time so far. I have had it only for a month now but it is great! Perfect size, attractive appliance, the cord retracts into the unit, I can't think of any changes that I would make. Would definitely recommend this unit!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best thing that happend to rice making in like 100 years
I had previously barrowed this contraption from some close friends I loved it so much I tryed buying it from them since the item held personal value to them they were un willing to budge, so one day I started to use my nugget and decided if the rice maker eventually needed to be returned my world would turn up side down, it just seems as though cookig rice over the stove is a chore instead of something that easy, now I know that sounds lazy but this rice maker is the easyist to make white rice(or that just what I use mine for anyway)sure I cook spanish rice differently in a cast iron pan but white rice is alot of what my husband and I eat anyway. So I ordered my rice cook on July 4th I told my hubbie it would be an awesome birthday gift, it was delivered by July 11 and the perfect white rice and contiuned flowing in my apartment ever since, it's easy and quick I work 10 hrs and my husband the same maybe even 12 on a busy night I come home for lunch and make 2 cups, I love rice so it's practally my dinner alone, but it feeds both my husband and I when we are plumb beat from working. this if the fluffiest most tender white rice I ever made, I would suggest this product to anyone who was serious about making good rice, Danielle Scott ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Looks great but doesn't perform well
I bought this in October, 2004 because I wanted something small for my kitchen. You cannot cook over 2 cups of rice without it spurting out all over the cooker. Now, it shuts off mid-way and I have to wait for it to cool down and try to reset it.Hopefully the "powers that be" will read these comments and make improvements.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for brown rice
I ended up returning this because every time I tried it with brown rice it burned the rice. I even tried doubling the recommended water amt. for brown rice and it still burned.

5-0 out of 5 stars yum
I tried another rice cooker first (Aroma brand). It failed to make even decent rice.I found this one on sale and grabbed it after the good reviews I had read here.True, you need to add a little oil or I butter to help with the boil over, but I like to do that anyway.I use a little Mazzola extra virgin olive oil spray.Works like a charm. Also make cleanup even easier. I use Jasmine rice.I gently rinse the rice once, spread it evenly in the cooker, use cold filtered water and let it stand a few minutes before removing from pot (all per a Thai friend of mine). The first batch was good. The second time I used it I added a tad more water than the cooker instructions said.(instead of 1 1/4 cup I added closer to 1 1/2 cup for long grain rice, 2 serving amount.)The result has been perfect, yummy rice each time since. It's the perfect size for my husband and me.I like the stainless steel exterior. It looks good on my counter, and doesn't take up much space.I've only had it 2 weeks, but so far I'm happy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Rice, makes a mess
The rice that we've made has tasted great. The problem that we had was with the water that comes out of the thing. We washed the rice as told in the manual and by other reviewers, but we still have water that leaks all over the counter when you make it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice little rice cooker.
This really is a great item to have. Not too big, not too small. Just the right size for 2 to 3 people. My wife and I have used this cooker several times already and we haven't experienced the venting or burning problems that other people have had with this unit. We have followed the other reviewers advice though, and have added a little extra water to the mix, and the white rice comes out perfect every time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy/Great Rice/Messy
First of all, this rice cooker is very easy to use and I was very happy with the results on the first try.I cooked brown rice and it turned out fluffy with just the right amount of moisture left behind. It took a little longer to cook than what the instructions indicated, but that wasn't a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally satisfied...
Excellent, just excellent. We have made sushi rice, basmati rice, jasmine rice, brown rice, brown sushi rice, rice porridge, rice baby food, risotto, rolled oatmeal, cut Scottish oatmeal, wheat berry pilaf, and barley soup in this cooker, and have not even scratched the surface... of the heavy, high-quality pot, or of the capabilities of this machine. We are vegetarians and eat a lot of grain, but I was surprised at how easy this cooker makes things I thought were a lot of trouble to cook before. We are also Internet-based workers and need something that can cook unattended without any trouble or stress. For the two of us, it makes exactly enough. For more than two, definitely get a larger-capacity model. But if you're looking for a 3 to 4 cup capacity cooker, stop looking - this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like rice
A dandy well constructed rice maker.Excellent design and compact enough for your counter top to avoid cluttering. Makes perfect rice and has options that allow you to make several rice dishes flawlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection!
This cooker is perfect and works better than advertised. Quick, clean, simple and great rice, a working timer to have rice ready for you when you wake up or when you come home from work. The end result is better than anything I've had at a restaraunt, and it can even make stews, bread pudding, and vegetables/meat with rice.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Chemical Smell is Real
After reading the reviews here saying that the chemical smell mentioned by others was not a problem for them, I went ahead and ordered this rice cooker. After I received the cooker, I was a little disappointed to find that it was made in china, rather than japan, and that there were some very noticeable imperfections in the fit and finish.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works "Great". No "Smells". "Perfect" rice.
I just got my "Sanyo" ECJ-D100S 10-cup rice cooker. I love it. The "precision" is "awesome". I cooked my usual "rice", "pepperoni", and "mixed vegetables". They turned out "perfect". Better than ever. I've had one of the "basic", single mode, "dumb" rice cookers for years. They work alright, but, take my word for it, "fuzzy logic" matters. This Sanyo with it's fuzzy logic thinking makes decisions that a single switch cooker doesn't make. Also, and I was "sniffin" like crazy while it was cooking, "NO BAD SMELLS". I think the people that have reported bad smells just didn't remove the "shipping paper" that is between the "inner pot" and the "heating element". They don't want to admit it that they "screwed up" and didn't "un-pack" the unit correctly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great rice cooker
You wouldn't think that a rice cooker would make a difference in the taste of the rice. Well it does. This rice cooker makes the best rice. I think it is the slow cooking part. It does takes 45 minutes to cook 2 cups of rice (45 mn with my old rice cooker) but it is worth it. We just had the best brown rice ever, not overcooked, not chewy, just perfect. And the second best thing is that you never have to clean that gooey cup in the back of the machine, because there is none. Should have bought this machine long time ago! ... Read more

This rice cooker cooks up to 5-1/2 cups (enough to feed five to ten people or more) of a variety of rices--white, sweet, porridge, and mixed--for accompanying stir-fries, stuffing peppers, or rolling sushi. The LCD screen is easy to read and the push-button controls are simple to program once you’ve mastered them. After loading your rice and water into the inner pan and choosing the type of rice you are making from the menu, the microcomputerized "Fuzzy logic" temperature control system calculates the exact cooking time (usually between 45 and 70 minutes) and programs it for you. The Fuzzy microchip combined with the unit’s spherical heating system, which cooks on all sides of the inner pan, ensure perfect rice every time without burning or overcooking. You can also set the timer manually in 30-minute increments for cooking times of up to 13 hours. When cooking is complete, the cooker beeps eight times and automatically shifts into a Keep Warm mode, which keeps rice warm for up to 12 hours after cooking is complete. An Extended Keep Warm function warms rice for up to 8 hours at a lower temperature and reduces the chance of rice drying out or becoming discolored or odorous. If rice is still not eaten by then, there is another opportunity to give it a warmup of between 5 and 15 minutes using the Reheat key.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this rice cooker!!
Great features - like the keep warm feature in particular.I searched for a long time and feel this was a good choice for the price and volume!

5-0 out of 5 stars there's nothing wrong w/ the measuring cup
Some reviewers have complained the measuring cup is smaller than a "real" cup.... this is because that's what Asian people who eat rice everyday use to cook rice!!!It's different from the measurements you use when you bake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect rice every time
I've made rice on the stove top and in a crockpot style rice cooker, this thing blows both of them away. Directions are simple measure out the rice, fill to the mark, press cook. ~30 minutes later you have rice that rivals a top tier asian restaurant. This unit also keeps the rice warm for a couple days without drying it out. I wouldn't go past 3 though, it starts developing a crust.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found the recipe guide online
I got the steamer as a gift and it is the best gift I have received in years. I was also puzzled I didn't get any guides to help with the cook times. But I found out where I could get it online. Here's the link

I am replacing the same product that I have used continually for the past nine years or so. It has been an indispensable part of our kitchen all those years and we hope this new one will continue the tradition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is the recipe guide?
I just bought this steamer and was going to use it only to discover that the use and care guide makes no mention of what foods cook what way and for how long!I can't get through to Balck and Decker to find out if it is supposed to come with it, but it is going to be very difficult to use without knowing how long to cook something.I hope this is an oversite from B & D.If not, reconsider buying it. ... Editorial Review

This electric rice cooker from Zojirushi provides useful capacity and handy details, not to mention the ability to keep rice moist, warm, and fresh for up to 12 hours after cooking is finished. The cooker is a good size for small families or couples, handling between 1 and 5.5 cups of rice at a time and requiring cooking times ranging from 12 to 24 minutes. Operation is incredibly simple--just add rice and water, depress the power tab, and walk away. The lock-tight lid maximizes cooking conditions, and the cooker automatically switches to keep-warm mode when the rice is finished. Indicator lights help you track what stage your rice is in, and the removable nonstick interior pot is clearly marked in cups and liters to guide you with quantities. The cooker’s durable housing has a low-key pastel floral design, and the inner lid and inner pot can both be removed for hand-washing. Clever extras on this model include a retractable power cord, a condensation collector, and a spatula holder. Zojirushi also throws in a measuring cup and spatula. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rice Cooker
This rice cooker has spoiled me.I have used different rice cookers, they just spilled starchy water all over my kitchen counter and rice always stuck to the pan.The lid locks tightly to hold in moisture, there is also a condensation cup to collect the water,so no mess to clean up after the rice is done. The best part is the rice never sticks to the pan and is perfect every time.It stays warm for a longer time, doesnt burn the rice or make it too dry.It works well of any kind of rice.cleaning the pan is a breeze.Clean it just as the manual says,it will last long. The retractable cord is an added convenience. If you have a family of up to 5,this serves well. This is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent rice cooker
this is the best type of cooker for sticky(short grain)rice.easy to use-can't fail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Rice!
The Zojirushi cooker (both our old and this new one) does a splendid job cooking white and brown rice to the right consistency if properly prepared. The stay warm feature is great! We can cook a full pot of rice and leave it in the cooker for a couple of days and it stays warm and fresh.[Of course, you need to be careful to use common sense precautions to make sure you don't cause an environment where bacteria breed (i.e., like using unclean serving utensils).]The price may seem a little steep, but since we will use it nearly every day for years (like to old one), it's well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The rice cooker
My family used this rice cooker for 15 yrs. Compare this to the Tiger brand, it is better. We were able to use the Tiger brand for only 2 yrs and it burned out on us. We don't know what happened. I heard that some of Zojirushi rice cookers are made in China, in lieu of Japan like the olden days. I hope this one is made in Japan and last as long as the old one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard, inedible rice
I bought a few of these on Amazon thinking that it would be nice as gifts. I tried one at home first, since I hate breaking out the rice cooker to make rice for 1 person.
3-0 out of 5 stars All right
I was disappointed with this item. It's acceptable for cooking small amounts. When I followed the directions (regarding amounts), the rice was hard and dry in the middle. With popcorn it starts to burn in the middle before all the kernels are popped.Pasta turned out okay. If I just cook a small amount of rice (1/4 cup dry), it comes out okay.

1-0 out of 5 stars Makes a mess
I had an old microwaveable rice cooker that worked well, it broke, so I purchased this one.I have used it a couple times now and every time it makes a mess in the microwave. The plastic gets hot and loses its tight seal and water leaks everywhere. The rice comes out perfect, but the mess is not worth it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great little steamer; this HS900 model is only $19.99 at Target
This little unit is very versatile, you can use it to steam anything.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works great, But....
I had this unit for about a year. When it worked, it worked great! But,the internals rusted which caused a wire to break. This resulted in me getting shocked(big time) and knocked to the floor. They use a tin mounting plate for the wires-go figure. We were very carefull about cleaning this, too(as it says not to submerse the base). So, we were extremely pleased with it until it tried to kill me. We will try a different steamer next time. BEWARE THE SHOCK HAZARD!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing I use.
This steamer is literally the most used small appliance in my kitchen. My favorite steamer recipe: steamed red potatoes and carrots tossed with 2T parsley, 1/2t rosemary, and 1/2t thyme sauteed in 2T butter. I use it for asparagus, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, and all sorts of stuff. When I'm cooking vegetables, I just don't enjoy results as consistent as the steamer when I'm using the microwave or the stovetop.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still works
We have had this little rice cooker for more than 10 years, and use it at least weekly, and it still works great.Bought it when there was only two of us, and the size was just right. Now, we have three kids, and its too small; have to make two batches.Time to buy a bigger one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad...bad.... bad
This rice cooker makes poor rice. The inner pot is too thin and the rice gets burned on the bottom. If you really want a good rice cooker buy a Micom unit like Sanyo. You'll pay a little more but atleast you'll have good rice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Time and Space Saver
My family loves rice, but it takes up a spot on the stove and it never seems to come out the same way twice. I was lucky enough to find this at a Thrift Store for $20, and it is great. Both my wife and I just pour in the rice and water turn it on and get the rest of dinner ready. We find it hard to believe we did not buy one sooner. We have cooked Long grain, short grain, and jasmine with great results. I noticed we left it on with a little layer of rice in it while the cooker was on warm and it did brown a little bit, but I found it kind of tasty! I put a little toasted sesame oil on it and had a nice little snack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rice good, Part Cheap and Expensive to repair
The rice cooker is great...keeps the rice looking good for 2 days before it turns bad. I got this rice cooker over a year now, until one day I try to push open the rice cooker and the push button pop-out and broke a little part that holds the bottons together. Rice is good. Part is cheap. I would buy this item for no more then $50. Now I'll have to upgrade to a better cooker that has a stong and sturdy push open button.

5-0 out of 5 stars After 3 years of weekly use it still makes great rice!
I have owned this exact model for over 3 years.I am constantly making rice as I am a thai chef and it does a wonderful job with jasmine rice.It will probably cook as well for any other long grain rice.I have read other reviews from people who tried to use different kinds of rice in this rice cooker. Not all rice are to be cooked the same.I think that this rice cooker was intended for more traditional long grain rice.I would never try to use my Thai sticky rice in this machine...it would never work. So, if you like long grain white rice this machine is great. The nonstick cooking insert makes cleanup easy and I have never had burnt rice. The cooking instructions are simple...put in how many cups of rice you want to cook and then fill the pot with water up to the line that correpsonds to how many cups you put in.You should have about 2 inches of water above the rice.If you did burn your rice you probably didn't put in enough water.Enjoy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What do you expect?
I've had this for I think four years and it's never given meproblem.I like how it makes the perfect amount for about three people and it never burns the rice.I've never had a prolem cooking Jasmine, brown, rice-a-roni, or sushi rice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aroma Rice Cooker is an Absolute Essential Today
This cooker makes the best jasmine rice if you measure 1 1/2 cups raw, jasmine rice into the cooker, wash it under cold water for 3 washings, and then fill the cooker with water up just under the 2 cup mark (more like 1 1/2 cups water) with the washed rice still in the cooker. Just push the button and taste GREAT, FLUFFY rice - EVERYTIME in only 20 minutes or less!
3-0 out of 5 stars Greatfor other things besides rice
I got this because it was cheap and it had the steamer inserts.I also found out that it doesn't cook rice well, BUT it's great for a host of other things, and basically it's great for using in lieu of a slow cooker, so anything else you can cook in a slow cooker you can use this for as well.
