5-0 out of 5 stars Good gift
I bought this as a gift for my wife. It has excellent, easy-to-use functions, and is a great starter sewing machine. I did not, however, get it from Amazon - I'll come back in a year and tell you whether it's broken, because that's all you get for a warranty on the parts from Singer, so I went with Sears for service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful machine!
I am very pleased with my new machine. It sews wonderfully and has so many different settings- I have not tried them all yet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sewing machine, great service!!
Despite the review above, I ordered this machine because it has all the features I wanted, AND there was a $25.00 dollar off special.I had seen the exact machine for sale at a very reputable store and decided to take advantage of the deal at Amazon.Firstly, the service was impeccable, I received it in 2 days, free shipping (amazon prime member) and got the exact machine I ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful machine, super easy to use
This machine is very similar to the popular CS 6000 that's sold both here in Amazon and in Walmart. In fact they both use the same manual. The difference between the 2 are: CS6000 has an start/stop button so you can operate the machine w/o foot pedal, quilting accessories such as walking foot and larger table extension, needle up/down button, faster bobbin winding, 2 speeds, a hard cover and some extra fancy stitches. I don't care about these missing features. I sewed my own cloth cover using left over fabric. To me this little machine has all the functionality that I ever wanted from a sewing machine. All the utility stitches are there - sewing buttons and button holes (1-step), zippers, elastic, overlock, zig zag, satin, blah blah blah - everything you need to sew a dress or a pillow case, plus more. If you quilt a lot buy the CS6000 one. Threading is super easy because the direction is printed right on the machine. The automatic needle threader is very helpful. I use it every time. My only complaint is that the thread tends to slip out of the needle hole unless I leave a very long "tail". This happened w/ CS6000 too when I tried it at a friend's house. With both models you can specify if the needle is left up or down when sewing stops. Both needs no oiling (probably mostly plastic parts?) I haven't sewed very heavy fabric yet. The LED light is very dim but cool. You definitely need a real lamp nearby. You can leave the machine on for a long time because the light uses very little energy. If you do turn it off, all the custom stitch settings will be lost (no memory). So far I am very happy with this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't worry, I've done all the looking for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yay!

4-0 out of 5 stars Meets my needs
This machine is a good price, and is lightweight. I find that it is very quiet, and does not have the problems such as thread binding up or becoming tangled.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
Right out of the box, the machine was missing the zigzag presser foot. I called Brother and they said I had to contact the retailer. When I finally got the foot, the machine was inoperable. I never even got to sew anything! I purchased a Singer 1507 and I am very pleased.

1-0 out of 5 stars not too disappointed
The machine is less than $40 so my expectations were in line with that (cheap), however it never really seemed to stitch, at least, I thought it would stitch even the simplest items, and I only used it about 5 time sin a year, but it didn't, and it would stick on every job, it was frustrating. It eventually broke, and I was sorry to say it still looked brand new, and that was the shame of it - it was too cheap to fix, and I was forced to throw it away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke
We bought three of these machines for a classroom quilt project. They were so poorly made that I am returning all three to buy ONE machine that costs a little more. You are much better off going with a more expensive machine- this one is very cheap in every sense of the word.

2-0 out of 5 stars A LOT smaller than picture
I was disappointed with the size of the actual product because it was like a toy for my younger granddaughters. Kayla and Tarra are 13, and they love my sewing machine so I thought I would buy them one for their birthdays. I wish I had paid more attention to the actual measurements because I would not have made this purchase! They both had problems getting it to sew because the thing would not make a real stitch! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Can't Do The Job
We were full-time RVers, and had need for a sewing machine at times, but no room. We thought a little hand held like this would be able to mend or hem the occasional garment. We were wrong. My husband could get it to work a few times, but I never had any luck with it. The stitches were too loose, or the thread would break. It wasn't the tension, since it was left alone once my husband got it to work. It proved to be a better source of frustration than just mending or hemming by hand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrated
I have to admit that I have never used a hand machine before, however I am familiar with sewing machines.I am a very patient person and spent hours on end trying to use it to do some basic hemming on the go.After days and days trying to adjust the tension, I have finally given up.This thing frustrated me to no end and has effectively scared me enough that I am extremely tentative about buying a new (non-portable) machine. The price clearly reflects its quality.I would rather buy a new shirt with my $30 than waste it on this useless piece of plastic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars works fine
All I've done so far is make alterations on a shirt (basically sewing seams and hems) but it seems to work fine. I haven't used a sewing machine in at least 10 years but this machine was pretty easy to use and I set it up pretty quickly. If I had never touched a machine before I don't think the instructions would have made sense to me, though.
5-0 out of 5 stars singer sewing machine
Arrived quickly after ordered. Easy to use. Many options for stitching available. Great beginner machine for someone who wants to learn to sew, do projects or make repairs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this product
I purchased this machine last year on a thanksgiving sale. I hardly used it for couple of times. After four months my machine is not working when I tried to sew. I can hear only the humming sound when I press the pedal. I got this machine because of its Name.I know my mother and my aunt had this for years. Singer has made a compromise on its quality parts these days

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Machine!!
This machine was recommended to me by a close relative that is very experienced in embroidering.I was interested in doing some things but didn't want to spend a lot of money on a machine as I didn't know if I would really like embroidering. As a novice, I didn't want to deal with anything too complicated.WOW, what a surprise.I love this machine!!I have never embroidered anything in my life! Opened the machine and within an hour had embroidered my first design. It was only my initials but I couldn't believe how easy it was with this machine. I'm hooked! No doubt I have much to learn about embroidering..but for me, I couldn't have found a better machine! It's GREAT!!! Very happy I chose this machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars great buy!
I love this machine!I've not sewn for years and this was just the ticket to get me excited about it all over again. It's been so much fun playing with all the embroidery designs and trying out different approaches. It's probably not a "beginner" machine but with a little practice, you can sew like a pro.It does everything but walk the dog!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just A Little Research
I have just purchased this SE-270D.I had a very tough time finding one in stock - NEW.I had an older machine Euro-Pro that I just loved but it quit sewing stitches.I am thrilled that after researching this Brother uses the exact same bobbins (I have 60+ of SA156). It also uses Low Shank Quick attaching feet that all my specialty rufflers, etc. will easily adapt to. It has an extra thread holder that mounts on top of the thread cartridge so you can use twin needles or your favorite thread. It is very versatile. The *.pes format for embroidery is very popular and many companies offer FREE downloads of graphics. You must check it out, and Amazon is the best place I know of.Thank You, Jeanne from Western Montana It has opened up a whole new world of sewing fun and adventures.PERFECT & Flawless, they have included ease of use for everything. It has never been so much fun to sew. Thank You Amazon ... Read more

Editorial Review

A good starter machine for garment construction and mending, this sewing machine from Brother includes 25 built-in stitches. These range from zigzag to shell tuck to blind hem settings, and there's also an automatic four-step buttonhole function. In addition, a twin needle setting lets you sew a double line with two colors of thread for a smart decorative touch. The machine's design and features are straightforward and user-friendly, with some settings--stitch length and width--automatically set for simplified operation. It also sews in reverse and has dial-adjusted tension for tidy work. Sophisticated home tailors will find this machine too basic, but occasional and beginning sewers should get plenty of use from it and not much frustration.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine!
This is my very first sewing machine of my own. It sews like a dream! I have made quite a few quilts with it, and never had a problem. But if you want a machine with some beautiful quilting stitches, skip this one. This is a very basic machine. I highly recommend this for anyone getting into sewing for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great child's machine
This is a great machine for a child.I bought this for my 8-year-old daughter and she loves it.She is able to thread the machine and the bobbin without assistance.I intend to send one to my niece for her 10th birthday.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great price, good quality
I am new to sewing machines, I bought the Dressmaker because of it's awesome price. I was suprised to find that it can go through pretty thick fabric (It does have it's limits though). For my needs it is perfect. Some drawbacks are that it is pretty darn loud and it moves across the table making it a little hard to sew in a straight line. But if your needs are small (no heavy duty thick fabric) and money is an issue, than I recommend this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me!
This sewing machine is the perfect size for my little apartment! I don't sew everyday- so I keep it in the box in the linen closet when I don't use it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Dressmaker II .... Waste of time and money
Horrible little machine. Skips stitches, can't controll tension, repeatedly broke thread (no matter what quality used), makes strange noises. To make matters worse, no availability of customer service. No response to emails or phone calls. I got it to just do some straight edge sewing and hemming. Couldn't even do that. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a piece of junk
I bought this because I didn't have room for a sewing machine. According to the commercials, it worked just as well. It was difficult to use, flimsy, and parts just kept falling off. Whoever designed this is a real jerk. Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT AT ALL WORTH IT
I bought this as my first sewing machine, hoping to learn how to use one, but this does not work AT ALL! It unravels as you try to sew, or just wont sew at all. The needle is small and impossible to thread, and the machine broke within my first five stitches- it just sewed loops, not real stitches, that unraveled with a touch. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND INVEST IN SOMETHING BETTER!

1-0 out of 5 stars Handy stitch sewing machine
This item is junk.Their warranty says it all:the machine has to be returned under the warranty within 60 days, and the customer has to pay shipping both ways!IOW, $5.99 must be included with the machine for warranty service!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use(except zipper foot).I like it!
I just bought this sewing machine about three weeks ago. I got it as a replacement for a Bernette that I used for about thirty minutes total that the repair man could not figure out how to fix. I love my new sewing machine! My husband, who had never sewn with a machine before, set it up quickly and we both can use it easily. It's so easy to use I am planning several more sewing projects for this summer. On my last project, the machine had no problems sewing through denim seams and pockets.I am very pleased with all of the features (59 different stitches, a double needle for gathering, needle threader, button foot) I got with this relatively inexpensive sewing machine.Everything is working great so far.I would recommend this machine for anyone looking for the basics plus the capability for more advanced sewing down the road. ... I was a little lerry about purchasing this maching because I wasn't sure if I would use it to justify the spend but as I looked around, Amazon had the best price and I saw the Good Housekeeping logo, which means Good Housekeeping doubles the warranty of the manufacturer. I was very satisified as the maching put out a lot of steam and I was suprised how fast it heats up. I looked at other machines...and the only one that came close to the the SteamFast was Jiffy. the Jiffy unit has a smaller tank, lower wattage and it is more expensive. I feel confident that I made the right choice and I use it every day!!!

For home tailoring, quilting, and detailed sewing, the Quik Press is a dream. While a handheld iron has its place, the large 9-by-22-inch padded surface of this tabletop unit presses more fabric at once, making it ideal for professionally setting pleats, gathers, and pant leg creases, as well as fusing interfacing. The tapered end neatly shapes contoured sleeves and darts, while the hole-free nonstick metal shoe plate makes appliqués and heat transfers a crafter’s delight. A temperature dial and pressure selector--either 50 or 100 pounds--lets the press smooth everything from delicate nylon to wrinkle-prone linen. An automatic shutoff adds safety, and the nonstick cotton cover conveniently removes for washing. The long handle keeps hands away from hot surfaces and locks shut when finished, making the press easy to carry to sewing circles. Since the press uses dry heat, a spray bottle is included for misting fabrics when desired. The press measures 23 by 20 by 8-1/2 inches, and is covered by a one-year warranty against defects. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Press for Quilters, Sewers or Crafters
I purchased this item and it works very nicely w/the projects I do.It is not very large which is a good thing.Get's very hot, very quick and that cuts down on time which is an added bonus. This press also works well for clothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!!!
This was an impulse purchase for me and I was worried I'd have buyers remorse. As it turned out I am extremely thrilled with this press. For my needs it is perfect.I just zipped through a huge laundry basket of cloth napkins and dish towels that would have taken me about 5 times longer to iron. The day the iron arrived I ironed a huge load of t-shirts and other items that would have taken me a week to get through.
1-0 out of 5 stars NOT HAPPY
I would have to say that amazon gave me a good deal andimmediate delivery.

Editorial Review

When Isaac Singer invented his first sewing machine in 1850, little did he foresee the range of home machines available today. An embroiderer’s dream, the electronic Singer Futura employs the user’s personal computer to transmit dozens of embroidery designs from the internet, a CD, or a floppy disk onto a range of fabrics. A step-by-step tutorial gets the user started, and additional online customer support is also available.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could rate it zero stars I would have.
I had the CE100 for all of 3 days and it was just awful, I ended up exchanging it for the CE200 (so glad I did) The CE100, has some problems, first off, it doesn't sew, and considering this IS a sewing machine I find this to be a big problem!!The bobbin thread will not lock your stitches, and on top of that the top thread breaks like every 4 stitches. And for those of you wondering I have sewn for over 15 years and believe me I called customer service, and they told me that the CE100 series has a problem with the bobbin casing cracking. Well call me crazy but why are they still selling the dumb thing then?? Seriously, I spent 3 very long days doing nothing but being upset, angry, and aggervated, not to mention saying ugly words and making up new ones when those didn't work:-) Save yourself from what I went through, just spend the extra money and get the CE200, once you get it and figure it out , it can be addictive! Good luck and happy sewing!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love It, I'm a beginner, it's not hard to use!
My husband bought this for me a year ago, I had never used an embroidery machine before.I was kind of scared about having to learn the new technology.I flipped through the manual for about 30 minutes and then got started, it worked easily and effortlessly.I use the software to digitize clipart and drawings that I scan into the computer, it is so much fun!Family members and friends are always so impressed when they see what I make.I'm going to a wedding in a month and I plan on monogramming some towels as a present.
4-0 out of 5 stars There was a problem but now it is fixed!!
These machines are awesome and powerful, but were getting poor reviews when they debuted in 2005 because of a bobbin problem and a software problem.Singer has moved to fix both problems.Newer stock of machines have a much-improved bobbin cover, which eliminates the problem of the bobbin getting progressively worse.A new version of the software has no known problems. You can update your software at their website, or call customer service to get the problem fixed.I have found their customer service to be first rate.Poke around the website for tons more information than is in the books that come with it.
