Pretty much everything it promised
I would have given this 4 and a half stars if I could have. It's only a little noisier than a fan and has cooled down my bedroom considerably, even during the recent heat spell, there was an occasional night I had to turn it off because I got cold. While it is a heavy unit and you do have to wait 24 hours to turn it on if it has tipped, it's easy to move along a flat surface, even a carpeted one. I do not recommend moving it up or down stairs without help. It does take up a bit more space than it says since you have to leave room for the exhaust tube. It's only major problem is the exhaust port which does not want to stay in the window even with using duck tape. I have yet to figure out how to secure it well. But after a month of use I have never had a leak or had to empty anything. So I think it balances out.

Haier quality? Poorly designed window exhaust kit troubles weak unit
The AC unit has a weak internal fan which limits the coverage throughout a reasonable sized room (300 sq. foot). The blades do not allow very much repositioning of the "cool" draft. Settings are limited to manual dials which provide vague adjustments of temperature and speed. Unit provides nearly as much heat via the duct tubing as it weakly "blows" out through the front grill.

This model is nice
This Edgestar 12000 BTU unit is powerful and works nicely. My only gripe is that you are stuck with the temperature reading in fahrenheit, and cannot change it to celcius. I bought this from Compact Appliance, with free shipping, and the product arrived fairly quickly. Installation in the window was a snap, and reading the manual helps if you are not familiar with PAC's. The plastic panels of the window kit slide to fit, and can be taped or screwed to hold their position.
caveat emptor...
Unit arrived banged up and non-funtional. After having hauled this 85 pound junker from the Fedex facility and have it not working was really upsetting.I called Compactappliance to have the unit returned for a refund and to my sheer amazement they directed me to Edgestar to sort it out??!!Edgestar was also a joke. 5 emails and 8 voicemails and threats of legal action before I was contacted. I should have done my homework before buying. check out other edgestar/compactappliance reviews for similar horror stories.

Excellent product, but with a littleaesthetic work first.
I was very wary of buying this, as it's very expensive and I've never had experience with a portable AC.I needed another AC to supplement my tiny window unit, but didn't want to block another window, especially my living room windows!It works wonderfully, but I just want to report that you totally need a grounded, single-circuit outlet dedicated only to the AC.I had to have one installed, a single circuit not shared with any other outlets. Before that, I was using an outlet that had a series of other outlets coming from it and I had a lot of brown-out issues.Now, no problems at all.My biggest issue was the ugly window kit.I couldn't stand it, and since it fits into the inside main window and not the outer storm area, most of the vented heat just went up in between the windows instead of going outside.So, I created my own storm window with .125 Plexiglas and actual storm window framing (I would have just cut the hole into the existing storm, but I rent the apartment and they wouldn't have appreciated me doing that!).I cut a 6" hole into the Plexi to fit the vent into.Beautiful!Now it vents completely outside, and I still have a nice window to look out of.It was a lot of work and extra expense, but well worth it for me.I've used it for about a month now. The AC does a great job reducing the humidity and cooling very quickly. I have a 750 square foot apartment - so with my other window unit in the bedroom and this one in the living room, it's perfect. It is loud, though, no matter what setting or mode you have it on. And, it would be great if Edgestar created the kit with a damper or louvers in the 6" vent hose adapter - I worry about birds flying into the hose! Also, Compact Appliance is a good company. Overated BTU's
We attempted to use this unit to cool a small computer room.(10x10x8 insulated)Without any cooling the room would get to about 85 degrees. With the unit set to 68 degrees the best it can do is take the temp down to 77 degrees. Some may say we are expecting too much from this unit but I owned a 12,000 btu window unit for my home and I can tell you this unit does not put out any where near the same amount of cold air. I can guarantee my old window unit would keep this little room cool(cold). From what I have read it appears all of these portable units are way overated for their BTU's. I would estimate the output as being 50% of what they are advertising. The two duct design is a great idea but the exhaust duct creates a tremendous amount of radiant heat to the point of being counter-productive to the cool air being produced.

AVOID
What a huge disappointment. We live on the east coast where the humidity can get ugly and these units simply cannot handle it. Once the internal drip pan is full the compressor shuts off and it goes into "self-evaporative" mode which the manufacturer says should take only 15 minutes but i much more than that in high humidity. This continues so often in high humidity that the subsequent cooling is hardly effective. There is no tank to empty (like in a dehumidifier) and the drain port is flush with the bottom of the unit so the only thing onto which you can manually drain it is a cookie sheet. It took MUCH complaining to both the Manufacturer (Soleus) and SELLER (COMPACT APPLIANCE - an online outfit in TEXAS--AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to get any help. The manufacturer finally sent us a condensation pump (to be applied externally) as part of the warranty. Nice of them but they didn't tell us (refused to acknowledge is more like it) that because the drain is flush with the floor and is a gravity flow system, you need to then ELEVATE the unit to higher than the external pump to get the water to drain into it. I now have the units up on 2 huge pieces of styrofoam. It is very attractive as you can easily imagine....NOT. Anyway...I cannot figure out what the advantage is in having these units. This all because I wanted to avoid a window unit. I am planning to sell these for cheap to someone who wants to use them in a garage or somewhere else that has a drain in the floor. What a waste.

Cools well but noisy
Great in what the company says it does, but be prepared for the noise.Most of the noise appears to be produced by the fan which blows very strongly.Inexplicably, it seems there are only two fan settings:stronger and strongest.Engineering to avoid noise producing turbulent flow may also help.The grills of my two units also do not turn down due to poor fitting, either a design flaw or a production error.

*final edit* I give this product a 1.I am hot, sweating and dissatisfied with my a/c unit.I checked the temperature in my room with the a/c unit on and it's 83 to 87 degrees all the time unless my room is cooler with the unit off.I'm seriously so mad that I spent all this money.As punishment for wasting my money, I get to sit here all summer sweating to death.In addition, I read somewhere that this unit was energy efficient.My utility bill went from $47/mo. to $135 for the month of July 2006.Sure, maybe the rate per KWH may have gone up, but the energy usage over July last year is more than DOUBLE and I had an a/c unit on all the time then.I would ask for my money back if I believed I could get it.After this year, this unit is going into the garbage.Don't waste your money.Trust me.
