Editorial Review

This traditional Italian steam-infusion espresso maker brews rich, delicious espresso in the old-world style, but don't depend on it to keep coffee warm or to reheat leftovers. Crafted of polished aluminum, the finish may need an occasional polish--after using it, just hand wash with a soft cloth and mild detergent and then wipe dry. Its classic design deserves to be kept on display for everyone to enjoy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts from a very old time user.
I decided to add my two cents as the reviews did cause me to purchase this pot in the first place. I think you really need to have the very, very best beans to start with, folks. This is the key to success. I have an excellent grinder with a sealed hopper in which a pound of fresh beans are placed for grinding on demand. If you don't have a sealed hopper grinder, keep the ground beans in the freezer, but consider getting a grinder..unground beans keep longer. And please buy fresh ones, not whatever's on sale cheap at the grocery store. These beans come from Gevalia's limited edition club for me, but choose whatever top flight type beans work for you. If the beans don't taste great, the coffee won't either. Pick the grind you like...remember, the finer the grind, the more chew you'll get because there's no filter here. I use coarse grind, with a strong roasted bean ground to 2 tablespoons worth. This pot makes only one cup of latte for me, I am not sharing. My large[2cup] mug receives a third of a cup of organic half and half, half a teaspoon King Arthur Flour's Almond Vanilla Flavor Powder, half a teaspoon organic sugar and goes in the microwave oven for a minute to heat while the Moka Express gets ice cold filtered water, the freshly ground coffee, then placed on the electric burner to heat. As soon as it steams up the column, it comes off the burner, the mug comes out of the oven. I put my frother in the mug and froth away until the half and half fills the mug at least two thirds, any more and it will overflow when you pour in the coffee. At this point, I "stall" the frother on the bottom of my mug so it is no longer moving and slowly stream in the coffee on one side of the mug, taking care so as to not spill out any foam, nor get any of the "grits". Once all the coffee's in the cup, I ease the frother up a bit so I can mix the froth into the coffee a bit, but still leave a foam head...the whole thing's a bit of an art form that makes up the morning routine. And according to Cook's Illustrated, if you let that cup rest for 10 minutes at this point, it is then perfect. They are right. The heat's just right, the flavor's developed just right...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great little coffe maker
Makes great coffee/espresso.This isn't necessarily true espresso but it does the job.We use it primarily for lattes. This claims to be a 6 cup maker but my wife and I can only get two cups of coffee out of it.These are LARGE cups but still, the strenght is not as strong as real espresso.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very handy when the electricty is out
This product is very simple to use; simple to add the water to the lower chamber, simple to put the grinds into the basket, simple to heat on the stove, simple to clean up after using it.It is simply the best. The one thing I will have to get use to is telling when it is done brewing (I mainly use an electric espresso maker and I can tell by the sounds it makes when it is done) but this will become apparent the more I use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent machine
Not sure if the first reviewer is misdirecting his dissatisfaction. Sounds like the spending of the vacation money was the real problem. Because this machine is perfect, and I have nothing bad to say about it. Other than that it does look a little Spartan, but only in a minor way.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too much too little
I expected a lot more from this machine. Now that I have it, I still use my old $5 drip coffee maker. The wife is still mad at me for spending our vacation money on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biggest waste of money ever spent
This machine worked great for about 3 weeks. Then the pump broke - customer service was useless and we had to pay $45 in shipping to send the machine back to them to get it replaced. It took them a month to return the machine to us, and they returned it broken.Oh - also - while they had the machine for repairs for one whole month - every time we called to check on it their first response was they never received it.We had to tell them how to find it in their system. Now we are attempting to return it - but so far that seems to be an impossible task.We should have paid more attention to the many negative feedback comments regarding this machine. If you want a coffee/expresso maker - DON"T BUY BRIEL!

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but more for show than use
My wife purchased this for me a year ago and that is the only reason it has not been replaced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Love the machine but just try to get a replacement carafe !
Unfortunately, within 3 months of getting the Briel ED271, the carafe cracked. That was 9 months ago.I have been trying to locate a replacement coffee pot since.Everyplace I ordered the carafe, after 2-3 weeks,I received a notice that the item has

Editorial Review

The Capresso Espresso Classic makes a great espresso, with the mellow flavor and beautiful crema that one might expect from a neighborhood cafe. Its continuous-steam design means it holds the steam in a reservoir, ready for running espresso shots or frothing or steaming milk for cappuccinos, lattes, or hot cocoa. The rounded black body with stainless steel accents looks great on a kitchen counter. With a 1200-watt mechanism, this espresso machine combines power with good design. Two toggle switches on top of the machine set the machine to on/off and steam/hot water. A red light indicates the machine is on; an orange thermostat light tells when it's heated up and ready to go. And the selector knob on the front of the machine has settings for brew, steam, and hot water for tea or just for warming up cups for espresso. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but trouble
We bought this machine over a year ago. It has been nothing but trouble. Water leaks over top of shot. We've tried everything - new parts, different beans, different grinds. Very disapponted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Pleased
This was a gift to my wife for Valentine's Day.A good friend of hers had one and after she tried it, that's all she wrote! We have been extremely pleased with this unit and would recommend it to anyone considering purchasing one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like a Ferrari: a frustratingly fickle machine
I bought a Capresso 114.01 espresso machine via Amazon in December of 2005. I had selected it in part, because of the high "bar" pressure rating. Upon receiving it, the first shot of espresso took several minutes to make. The coffee just drips out one drop at a time. The manual suggests "using a coarser grind than other espresso machines". I tried progressively coarser grinds until I was at the coarsest setting of my burr gringer...the coffee was getting weaker, and coming out a little faster, but still taking many minutes for one shot of espresso, with a weak and bitter result and no crema. The manual suggests tamping the coffee ever so lightly. Good suggestion, because if you tamp it with more than a feather's weight of pressure, you get no coffee flow at all. I called Capresso technical support numerous times. They suggested disassembling the machine--unscrewing the metal screen on the body of the machine where the water comes through-- and cleaning it. I did this to no avail. Besides, one shouldn't need to service a machine that is less than a month old in this way! After two months of frustrating, hit-and-miss results, I returned the machine to Amazon. Because it's after the 30 day return period, I may not get a full refund, but I'm glad to be rid of that piece of junk. I have since purchased a $180 Krups XP 4000 espresso machine that just works beautifully, with any grind of coffee (even very fine), any tamping pressure (even quite firm), the machine produces 2 shots of espresso in 25 seconds flat with tons of crema. What a relief! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy, somewhat expensive, and good
I read the reviews of espresso makers, and this one came out on top, so I've bought three, two for work and one for home, and have been using them for a couple of years. Several others have seen mine, and bought their own, with similarly good results.
1-0 out of 5 stars Run Away...!!
Our "experience" with Nespresso, after TWO different machines, has been a nightmare. This machine was the last one we tried, and though it worked fine for a few weeks, it started to "burn" our coffee, leak, and the pump started to sound like it was going to blow at any minute. We finally had to shut it down and unplug it.Nespresso told us "all was fine, we just need to descale it" (you will find that this is the answer to every problem you have with their machines), then told us, even after only three months usage that they would not repair it (even though it comes with a one-year warranty!).You're stuck buying the capsules from Nespresso as no-one else is licensed to sell them. The machine is made of thin-wall polycarbonate surrounding a heavier metal shell, but cleaning the machine becomes an exercise in futility as you have to grasp the plastic whilst you remove the capsule cage for cleaning, and that requires quite a few foot-pounds of torque. The plastic seems to "give", making you wonder whether it will snap off at some point. For all the hoopla about the "ease in which you can make your favorite espresso drinks", this machine sure required a lot of man-hours to keep it running smoothly. It left grounds in the cup, sometimes would not pierce the capsules fully, giving you what looked like tea rather than espresso. The "warming tray" is a farce; a piece of thin metal over a plastic top.I measured the temp at the highest point at about 65 degrees.Just a nightmare, and the service from Nespresso was rude, condescending, and worthless. We're glad to be rid of it.Anyone need a hundred or so capsules....?
5-0 out of 5 stars the cappuccino is just delish!
this makes the best cappuccino ever! i just got this machine and i feel like BEAVIS cause i can't stop drinking cups of caffeine. it's such a nice machine! and i love the package inside with the cups + coffee packs to sample. i highly recommend. for this price the machine is really high quality and easy to use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the espresso tastes great
I have just received the machine from Illy USA at a very attractive price (considering I order the Illy beans regularly anyway, their price on this machine with a one-year coffee subscription is a excellent indeed). I have been needing to replace an espresso machine every 2 years ca., I figured, I might as well try out one considered to be in the light duty commercial catagory.
4-0 out of 5 stars Livia 90 Automatic is good value for money
I bought the Pasquini Livia 90 Automatic in 2002. The version I needed was for 240 volt operation so it was shipped from Italy. At the same time I also ordered the grinder and 2 drawer base. I had spent a lot of time reading reviews and comments on several sites for a wide variety of machines. The number of reviews which compared their brands to the Pasquini Livia machines was what really sold me on the Pasquini. You don't compare your machine(s) to lesser machines, you compare against the best. If so many various reviews used Pasquini as a target then it must be well worth a look. I am glad I did, it is an extremely well built and reliable machine.
3-0 out of 5 stars dont order from italy

This compact espresso machine provides a lot of service for its size. Its sleek, timeless design has minimum buttons for maximum functionality. The preset buttons for single and double shots mean you won't have to guess when the brewing's done, though you can reprogram those settings to customize the strength of the espresso you make. The steam/hot water attachment is easy to use: just press the appropriate button and wait a few seconds, then froth some milk or dispense hot water for tea, instant soup, or other hot-water needs.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars does the trick
the machine takes up little counter space and its use leads to no mess. it doesnt produce the greatest coffee in world but good to decent coffee. it is most convient in that i live alone and want to minimize the amount of effort in making a single cup. of note, this maker depends on capsules made by nespresso and just one day, just maybe, nespresso could stop making the capsules. one cup of coffee costs about $1 and one must spend a minimum total of $50 when placing an order for the capsules.
