Editorial Review

When used regularly, all knives need regular maintenance to keep blades sharp and to prolong life. While a standard steel like the ones that come with a block set will polish a knife edge, true sharpening actually helps create a new edge by taking off a bit of metal. This is a tricky process to master, and done wrong, it can actually wear down blades before their time. Chicago Cutlery’s MagnaSharp Mouse removes the guesswork from knife sharpening by controlling the angle of exposure to the ceramic rods inside. Featuring an exterior made from durable molded plastic, its playful design combines the ergonomic ease of a computer mouse with simple, safe pull-through technology. Simply slide any fine-edged knife or scissor blade through the sharpening slot while applying a slight downward pressure; repeated three to five times, this process re-aligns and sharpens even dull edges to like-new condition. Because the sharpening rods are on the inside, they can’t be damaged when not in use. The MagnaSharp mouse is compact enough to fit in even a crowded drawer, but it also features a magnetic back for easy storage on the refrigerator, stove, or wherever you keep and use your knives. It works equally well for either left- or right-handed use. The Mouse is covered by a lifetime guarantee and is not recommended for use with serrated or scalloped edges. Read more

  • Innovative sharpener for knives or scissors
  • Durable molded plastic body with ceramic rods inside
  • Pull-through design is safe, easy to use, and ergonomically sound

2-0 out of 5 stars Garbage sharpener, great magnet
This is a nice fridge magnet to hold pieces of paper on your refridgerator. Not so much to sharpen knives, it's hard to get the right angle to make a keen edge, and isn't a very well-built tool.
5-0 out of 5 stars great for the money
i don't understand why some reviewers say it doesn't sharpen.i got this littler sucker with my chicago cutlery insignia set and it sharpens great, just 3-5 strokes every few uses, just like one of the other positive reviewers said.afterwards, i can slice tomatos just millimeters thick with ease and virtually no pressure.it's not a professional-caliber sharpener and i don't know how well it works on non-chicago cutlery blades that might have a different pitch or angle, but for 8 bucks, it works great.

Each Contemporary knife is etched on the end with its name and/or size, allowing quick identification when stored in a block. Perfect for cutting apples and other fruit, this parer will soon become a daily favorite. All Calphalon knives come with a lifetime warranty. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent paring knife
I have the 8" Chef's knife from this collection and I'm quite enamored of it: good heft and balance, exquisitely sharp, easily honed, etc. I purchased this paring knife to go with it and I am quite satisfied. Originally, I gave four stars because I found the balance off; working with the knife has convinced me that it has a perfect balance and hand feel. I would change the rating to five stars if I could figure out how. If you want a good paring knife that will last you for the rest of your life, look no farther. The steel is the same top-quality German stainless used in Solingen knives, but the knife is manufactured in China. Best of both worlds! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This seven-inch santoku knife combines the precision of a Western chef’s knife and the power of a Chinese cleaver. It’s an essential in most Japanese homes as well as many professional kitchens. Great for chopping and dicing herbs or vegetables, the broad, straight blade also produces razor-thin and precise slices of sashimi, or any other fish, meat, or poultry. Oval-shaped indentations on each side reduce friction for a cleaner cut and help release food so that it falls away from the blade. Read more

  • Forged high-carbon stainless steel blades for exceptional sharpness and rust and stain resistance
  • Full tang for balance and strength; forged bolster; exclusive Taper Grind edge
  • Ergonomically-designed, triple-riveted polymer handles are nonporous and ultra-hygienic

4-0 out of 5 stars Good knife
I love this knife!I use it whenever I have a chance to and I have yet to have a problem with it.It's not near as flimsy as previous knives I've used.

1-0 out of 5 stars This knife is junk.
I bought this knife thinking all knives are the same, besides, I can put a sharpened edge on any knife that isn't sharp enough.Wrong! The knife is to heavy, poor balance and I can't get it to cut the way I like no matter how much I have worked on it.I finally bought an $89 Henckel Pro S.Light, balanced and cuts like a razor! The Chicago Cutlery knife is in the garage now in my tool box.

2-0 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor
The low price was nice, but the knife wasn't worth what I paid. It arrived dull and I have not been able to make it sharp. Never had this problem with more expensive knives from Henckels or Caphalon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sharp, but dangerous
I cook regularly, usually using an assortment of good stamped Henckels knives and a terrific Farberware forged chef's knife, and rarely cut myself --- not more than once a year, if that.In three weeks of using these knives, I've cut myself three times; it's definitely possible that I would not have cut myself if I were paying better attention, but the knives do feel different in my hand from other knives and the association between these knives and cutting myself seems too strong for me to dismiss completely.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice little knifes
These knifes are small and razor sharp. Extreemly good at peeling & chopping.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good blades, poor handles
Based on the user reviews, I ordered these knives. The blades are, as advertised, sharp and well designed. The handles, however, are very thin and poorly shaped. After a few minutes of slicing strawberries, my hand began to cramp. The knives are very lightweight, which can be a problem because you have to provide all the cutting power yourself. This is one of the very few items I have ever returned to Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overall knives made of good steel.
I have this set and for the money it is a great price.Great knives of course have that delicate balance of chromium and carbon. This means rust will occur and therefore you have to wipe the knife from time to time. That's just the way it is unless your willing to pay three to four times the amount of money.

This 6-inch professional-grade cleaver is an exceptionally strong, fine tool for chopping through bones and joints in meat. Or, with an eye on versatility, turn it on its side, and crush peppercorns or cloves of garlic. J.A. Henckels has been a knife manufacturer since 1731. The name is synonymous with quality, and this cleaver holds to the company's high standards. It is forged of high-carbon no-stain steel and offers an ice-hardened, laser-controlled edge. While well balanced, it feels heavy, which is a definite benefit in a knife that must hack through tough sinew and bone. Altogether, this is an excellent kitchen tool. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent - but gets scratched easily
Firstly, you don't get a 12"x12" surface to cut on - the grooves in the board reduce the area usable for chopping. However, the board is still a decent size for chopping jobs when you are cooking for two people. And the groove is actually a good idea - I make a lot less mess with this chopping board than I did with the earlier grooveless one. The product description says that it is gentle on knife blades; while this may be true, I'm afraid knife blades are not equally gentle to the surface of the board. I've been using it just over a week and already I can see some scratches. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Diamond abrasives in this tool actually sharpen a knife rather than simply realign its edges, as most sharpeners and sharpening steels do. For right-handers and left-handers alike, it's simplicity itself to use. Grasp the handle and draw a straight-edge blade back and forth through the stage 1 guide 25 to 50 times to coarsely bevel it. Then move the blade to the stage 2 guide and draw back and forth 10 times through finer diamond crystals for the second, fine-edged bevel. Serrated blades go only through stage 2. By turning, rollers demonstrate that a blade is properly straight so it is being beveled at the precise angle required. Lightweight but tough, the sharpener is formed of silver and black plastic. It's 6-1/2 inches by 2-1/4 inches, small enough to take on a camping or hunting trip. Read more

  • Sharpens any straight-edge or serrated knife
  • Works for kitchen, outdoor, and pocket knives

5-0 out of 5 stars My knives have never been sharper!
I've had this sharpener for at least 3 years.I sometimes forget to use it, and when I remember, I am ONCE AGAIN surprised at the ease to get such super-sharp knives!I'm "all thumbs" with other forms of sharpening, as some of my older knives will attest, but this great diamond sharpener is the greatest.I got on line just now, after surprising myself once again with how sharp my knives can be, to order 3 of them for gifts for our children. The shell may be plastic (which makes it easy to use and store)but it has no part in the sharpening mechanism, and the results are incredible.I wouldn't have anything else -- the electric models aren't worth the price and risk going too far and wearing down the blade.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent product
this sharpener is doing an excellent job sharpening all of our knives--and the sharpness is lasting.

Measuring 3-1/2 inches, this handy little knife is a true kitchen essential. Ideal for trimming, peeling, and removing blemishes on fruits and vegetables, its small size and nimble profile excel at any task that prizes delicacy, dexterity, and control. As a part of Chicago Cutlery’s Walnut Tradition line of cutlery, this knife combines high performance with excellent value. Stamped rather than forged for lighter weight and a more reasonable price, the blade is made from high-carbon, 420 stainless steel with carbon to keep edges sharper longer and chromium to resist rust and stains, while Chicago’s exclusive Taper Grind edge produces impressively precise slices and retains its sharpness well over time. A full tang extends from the tip of the knife to the end of the handle for improved balance and strength. A comfortable walnut handle offers the rich warmth of wood and a classic look; it’s securely held to the blade with triple-compression brass rivets for added safety and stability. 4-0 out of 5 stars great piece of knife, but........
I got the knife 2 weeks ago and it really works great, very sharp blade and easy to use. The only thing I noticed is the part of its description that anything you slice or chop doesnt sticks on the blade because of its hallow edge, this is not true because I always slice tomatoes and it really sticks on the blade I have to swipe it down with my index finger to get into the bowl. But the quality is really great, I just hope this would last for a long time!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent knife for the price
They aren't kidding--this thing is razor-sharp.It needed no tuning up before I used it for the first time. The handle is balanced so that one feels almost no weight... which is unfortunate, because I like the weight for chopping. But the hollow-edge design is wonderful--the mushrooms and onions I sliced up were thin as paper, and didn't stick to the blade.I'd recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kitchen Man
I've had one of these in constant use for four years now and it fulfills its reason for being admirably. It is totally utilitarian and keeps my valued, Wusthof, Global and Henckels, knives organized, out of sight, protected and instantly accessable without taking up the whole drawer or using up valuable counter space as larger 'made mostly for show' blocks would. If you're looking for something simple and in its own way elegant this should serve you well for a long time. If you have more knives than this will hold or if you have lots of counter space to waste get something larger. That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wusthof Grand Prix Kitchen Shears
I ordered this item because I know Wusthof has a reputation for quality. I find the kitchen shears sturdy and sharp; especially appreciated are the easy-separation feature of the blades for washing and the handy lid-gripper for opening jars and bottles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Kitchen Shears
These Wsthof Grand Prix Kitchen Shears are an excellent addition to one's collection of quality knives and kitchen tools. I keep these kitchen scissors handy by storing them in a Wsthof oak wooden slant knife block that has a special slot for them. I use them almost every day for household tasks - from opening plastic bags and cardboard boxes to cutting cheesecloth for making bouquet garni or waxed-paper rounds for lining cake tins. The handles are ergonomic, so that your hand doesn't get cramped when using them, and hygenic, so that they can be kept sanitized, since they're made from one piece of specially-molded plastic, which is the same plastic as the handles of Wsthof Grand Prix knives. I wash my kitchen shears by hand, dry them immediately, and place them back in the knife block, so they stay relatively sharp in between professional sharpenings. They are made in Germany from the same high-carbon, no-stain steel as the Wsthof Classic and Grand Prix lines of knives. The only drawback that I've found with these kitchen shears is that they are slightly bulky to use, as compared to Joyce Chen kitchen scissors, which I use for snipping herbs from the garden. The Joyce Chen scissors never seem to need sharpening, and they hold a keener edge than these shears. Also, I don't use these Wsthof kitchen shears for cutting up poultry; I prefer using my J. A. Henckels chrome-plated poultry shears for that task. All in all, these kitchen shears are a good kitchen tool that will last a long time, and they are safe for use by older children, too. ...
