4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I've got this one and the 10 1/4" skillet. For a family of 5, this size is perfect. It easily handles 3 lbs. of ground beef, a double batch of Hamburger Helper, or 8 small chicken breasts. This is the pan I reach for most often. However, it's not quite perfect.I'm having a devil of a time getting pancakes to cook evenly.Others have mentioned uneven heating due to it's size, and I've wondered the same thing. If the only flaw in this pan is imperfect pancakes, I can easily live with it and find a more suitable pan for the pancakes. This is my "go to" pan whenever I'm cooking for our crew; can't imagine cooking without it.It browns & carmelizes beautifully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but Not Perfect
I've used this pan for about four years now.I use it exclusively and it is easy to care for ***AS LONG AS*** you keep acidic foods such as tomato sauce and wine out of it.If you ever partially take off the seasoning with an acidic food, what a ***CHORE*** it is to get the seasoning right again. You will have to SCRAPE off the remaining seasoning somehow and reseason all over again (which is no big deal if you cook sausage or bacon).I messed up the seasoning in my cast iron dutch oven and I never did manage to get it right again -- maybe if I set aside two hours and used steel wool or something else requring a lot of elbow grease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good
It has turned out to be a bit too large for me (live alone) but it has been welcomed when family visits.I like the Lodge Logic line, slightly lighter than most cast iron, pre-seasoned makes it a winner. ... Read more

Editorial Review

There are certain dishes that absolutely require cast-iron cookware, and others that just simply taste better when made with it. Just try throwing an aluminum pot onto the campfire and watching the blisters form or sampling a hearty spoonful of jambalaya that wasn't made in a cast-iron kettle. Fancy alloys and coatings on other types of cookware are simply trying to emulate the innate qualities of properly seasoned cast iron: heat retention, even heat distribution, and a scratchproof nonstick surface that will never warp. Since 1896, Lodge has been steadily producing the world's most extensive selection of professional cast-iron cookware, lovingly poured one piece at a time. Cared for properly, these products will last for generations. --Read more

Features

  • Cast iron provides excellent heat retention
  • Good-sized: 12-inch diameter; 1-3/4 inches deep
  • Nonstick when seasoned for easier cooking
  • Cooking with cast iron supplements nutritional iron intake
  • Individually poured piece of cookware

5-0 out of 5 stars It Just Works
Decent cast-iron is a joy to cook with.Season this pan well, and you will be amply satisfied.I have a couple of Lodge brand pans, and I like them a lot.One of the really nice things about this pan, is the extra handle.Cast-iron weighs a lot; filled with food, even more. The extra handle makes this pan easy to move, and work with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cast Iron Rocks!
At some point in the post WWII American consumerist age, we decided to replace all the good stuff that worked with newly invented junk that did not work in the name of progress. Think of margerine instead of butter..for some reason we took natural butter off of our tables and replaced it with artery clogging scientfically invented margerine. Americans such as my grandparents ate butter every day of their lives and lived into their 90's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cast Iron for Dummies (and Smarties, too)
One of the most important things to consider when buying anything cast iron is its weight, and therefore, balance. Never use your wrist alone to pick up a heavy skillet, use part of your arm as well. Because for its inherent weight, it is very important for cast iron cookware to be properly balanced. You should be able to put part of the skillets handle just past your wrist so that your arm is providing partial support. The pan should feel balanced this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 stars if I could.
The fryer with lid is definitely the best choice for me.My first fry was hamburger. Then I boiled off the burnt bits, wiped off the ash, oiled the bottom and placed in the oven at 350 degrees for one hour. I hope to finally make pancakes, scallion cakes, injera, pa jeon and more burgers.I didn't know how pretty and perfect this fryer was until I saw it for myself.Cast iron shapes have never moved me not even to make my own bibimbap but the proportions of this fryer are very pleasing.I hope more people will buy this variation with lid and maybe they will become enamored with cast iron and enjoy the full benefits of cooking with it.I just tried an omelet in this and it browned it more than my paper thin wok but it still did the job. This is a versatile version indeed.
5-0 out of 5 stars great cooking tool
If you like cooking with cast iron, you can't do better than Lodge Logic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatile and well-made
I bought this one because I was looking for something to fry various things in without the pot warping (as stainless steel pots do). Since I got this pot, I have been using it to cook all sorts of dishes--soup, stew, reheating rice etc. It's big enough to hold enough fried rice, for example, for 4, and I can pop theentire pot, lid and all, into the oven to keep warm. But it's not so big as to be too heavy to handle.

I bought this to roast potatoes in the oven and its been great. If you need a small cast iron frying pan this is perfect. AND its already seasoned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Seasoned is the Way to Go!!!
After struggling with a set of three regular cast iron pans from a different manufacturer, I finally boxed them up for Goodwill.I never mastered the seasoning part of cast iron usage.I ended up with a sticky residue and one pan rusted. After about three attempts of scouring and reseasoning, I gave up and ordered three Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned skillets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the Lodge product, but. problems ordering this continue
I have ordered this 10 inch skillet three times, and have been sent the wrong product each time after I returned the item received (I have received three 8 inch skillets).I have emailed Amazon twice about the mixup, and felt safe ordering it the last (third) time since months had passed. But no change had been made.Perhaps the item is listed under the wrong product number?
5-0 out of 5 stars Unlike another reviewer
I was buying unseasoned cast iron decades before the pre-seasoned was available and back then they were telling us to use fatback or bacon grease to season it.These days, I just use vegetable shortening and it seasons well if you do it right.Just don't be in a hurry, wipe your cookware clean under hot water and never use soap.I still have a frying pan that my grandmother gave to my mother who then passed it on to me.My kids will have to fight for it as I'm not passing it on as long as I can use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential kitchen tool -- easy to season -- will last forever
Season your new cast iron with vegetable shortening and an inverted trip in the oven for 45 minutes, do that a few times and the cookware will begin to pick up a black finish. It will take a little time. Keep your cookware clean with hot water and a scrubbrush, NEVER soap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice alternative to teflon
I've decided to replace my teflon pans with cast iron and this is one of the first ones I bought. So far it has been excellent. The large size is fantastic, though it's definitely heavy. My arm muscles are getting a workout! I'm glad I got it pre-seasoned, since that was one less thing to hassle with. I have found that cooking with cast iron makes food taste better. Kind of surprsing. I'm not sure why this has been the case, but my husband and I have both noticed it. I have to say though, it is very different than cooking with a regular teflon pan. At first I kept burning everything. Cast iron gets very hot and maintains a steady hot temperature. I'm finding that I'm basically cooking everything in this pan on med-low heat, where I would have used medium heat. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase though and plan on getting a couple more cast iron pans

Editorial Review

By dividing this cornbread skillet into eight wedge-shaped sections,Lodge exploits cast iron's baking advantages to ensure that a tasty crustenvelops each wedge when it emerges from the oven. Because cast iron isunmatched for heat retention and distribution--no hot spots--that crust will becrisp and uniform. The skillet is 9 inches in diameter, and each wedge is 3-1/2inches long and 1 inch deep. The skillet weighs 5-1/2 pounds, must be seasonedby coating with melted shortening and then baked, and needs to be coated withoil or cooking spray after each use to prevent rust.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really enhances your cornbread!
I just recently purchased three of these (one for myself, one for a friend & one as a gift). You have to season it first, but there are instructions included for doing so.So far, I have only used mine once, but the cornbread turned out really great.I really like it because the cornbread is so crusty and that is the part that I like!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Skillet
I usually bake cornbread in my 10" cast iron skillet but thought this would be a nice variation.I seasoned the skillet and before pouring in the batter, I wiped it down with oil and placed it in the oven to get hot. There was a little bit of sticking in the corner but nothing that damaged the cornbread.I've used it several times since then, mostly working on modifying my own recipe to fit the pan, and the cornbread pops right out.The cornbread from this pan pairs really well with beans and other types of soup.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not Practical
I followed the directions to the letter and cured my new pan as instructed.

Editorial Review

By squaring this skillet and flaring its sides, famed French cookware manufacturer Le Creuset offers extra cooking room for steaks, fish, burgers, or any food that benefits from stovetop grilling and the caramelized flavor imparted by seared grill marks. The ribs in the grill's bottom not only provide those marks but also elevate foods so that fat collects between them for low-calorie cooking. Because cast iron is unmatched for heat retention and even distribution--no hot spots--foods will cook uniformly in the 8-inch-square grill. Enameled outside with a bright, smooth surface and inside with a black satin-texture finish, this is a heavy, durable grill that works on any stovetop, in the oven, or under a broiler. It's also stylish enough (think French farmhouse kitchen) to bring to the table. Though it's dishwasher-safe, hand washing preserves a patina that builds up with use and aids in the grill's stick resistance. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grill away!
I purchased this grill pan as a birthday present to myself. Seriously the best present ever. I cook with my grill almost everyday. Fruits, chicken, hotdogs, even breads. I highly recommend all Le Creuset products. Huge fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pan for 1 or 2 servings
This a wonderful pan for grilling up 2 meat patties or 2 filet sized steaks.I oil and preheat mine in the oven at 375 until it's super hot (15 min), then place on the stove top on med-high heat to really get a good sear on the meats.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this little grilling skillet!!
I just got this little grilling skillet and I love it.The secret to using it is to heat it really hot on medium heat before adding the food.I oil both sides of whatever I'm grilling but not the skillet.Once the pan is hot, I add the items I'm grilling. They will grill smoke free and even if they stick initially, the food will unstick as it cooks.A hamburger with cheese on top (added at the end of the cooking) certainly made a mess of the grilling ridges but once the skillet cooled, I added water and soaked it awhile. The skillet virtually rinsed clean later.I do have a bristle brush to scrub away any stubborn spots though. How did I live without this little skillet and the regular 11" skillet I bought earlier? Both are such great products!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Skillets
Lodge has lived up to it's reputation once again. Having cooked with cast iron for many years both indoors and out I was intrigued by the new design and that it was pre-seasoned.I purchased the 8", 10" and 12" sizes of this iron skillet and after a quick clean-up with soap and hot water and a little time on the stove with some oil in them to dry them out completely I started using them.I did find that the first time or two of use some of the things cooked did stick a little but now the skillets are working very well.We purchased a set of them for our daughter who is getting married as a wedding gift and our other daughter wants a set for her family. ... The lodge is a very heavy skillet. It is almost 15" on the inside and requires a large burner for heating.Howver, it does cook very evenly.Clean up is simple, just make sure you have a large enough space for storage.

This pan lives up to the high quality I've come to expect from Lodge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cookware for life!
I am absolutely sold on cast iron. I have 4 different size skillets plus covered casserole, fryer, dutch oven.I really enjoy using this giant one (pick your size for your crowd). I pre-heat it in a 350 degree oven for stove top cooking.I bake coffee cakes, corn bread and fritta's in it. It's roomy for grilling sandwiches.I have also broiled and "oven fried" meats in this skillet. I love to bake one pot meals (casseroles from cheese to rice)in the dutch ovens.Wet roasting is nice too but the pots do need to be re-reasoned after.I agree with two other reviews 1) clean up while still hot on the burner 2) no tomatoes! (acidic foods destroy the seasoned coating).Making gravy in these pans really cleans them up.I will never "need" to buy another set of cookware! ... Read more

As with all cast iron once you have the iron well-seasoned(initial seasoning+ seasoning from usage) ,you will have a perfect heat conductor and a better than teflon stick -resistant peice of cookware. It just takes patience and some TLC but once you get the hang of it, nothing beats cast iron. I started buying cast iron after a couple of years of buying the EXPENSIVE high end cookware which started warping one day after the other. I threw the majority of those away. I wanted cookware that would grow with me that I could keep for more than 5 years!!!! So I finally made the decision of cast iron. It took me a while to get it but there is so much lit. out there for you to educate yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
Anything by Le Creuset is worth the price. This skillet is just the right size for my stove top...and, it's only one I could find that is good for any stove type.I highly recomend it, and any of their products for fabulous cooking results

2-0 out of 5 stars Siz is too small
It says this is a 2 burner grill pan but that is so wrong. It does not cover 2 burners it sits in the middle of each burner causing the handles to be right ove both burners. Very dissapointing, I love the le creuset normally and was really looking forward to having a grill pan made by them. Unfortuanatelly due to the shape it will not work for just one burner either. Hopefully they will come out with an updated one, until then my search for a good 2 burner grill pan continues.

5-0 out of 5 stars great grill product
I think this is the greatest grill pan ever! It's so easy tohandle and easy clean-up, Thanks LeCreuset! You make great cookware!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HEAVY
This is an excellent skillet.Cooking is very even and clean-up is straight forward. It is quite heavy though, which can make it difficult to handle when hot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to my kitchen
This skillet is great for browning meat, making lots of eggs, or any other cooking job where a REALLY big pan is needed. It's also easy to clean. One caution---This skillet is quite heavy and is a little awkward when the pan is hot and you're draining grease or transferring the ingredients to another container. You'll want to store this in the oven or another easy to reach location. You won't want to lift this one out of a stove drawer or the bottom of a cupboard very often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Skillet!!
I've had this skillet a short while now and I like it a lot.I'm new to cooking with cast iron, I grew up with it, and now I have the pieces my mom got as wedding presents in 1952.I bought a few additional Lodge products to round out my collection. This skillet is indeed heavy, but manageable because of the helper handle. The weight takes some getting used to, but it works great.I'm not a professional cook, but I like the way cast iron feels in the hand, and the way it holds heat. This skillet is a good size for a large meal.I season the preseasoned cast iron myself before use, I found that it isn't really absolutely non-stick out of the box, but one hour in the oven coated with vegetable oil is not much to ask to prepare this great looking, great functioning skillet for anything.Don't think of picking this pan up with one hand to spill off juices or to move it, use two hands, and don't forget the potholders, or barbecue mitts.I've used this skillet on top of the stove, and in the oven, both ways it cooks great.I bought the Lodge cast iron wok too, and it works really well, heavy piece, but well made as all the Lodge products I have are.Natural non-stick is a healthy way to go, and the little extra care cast iron needs is a more than fair trade off.It is true what they say about old cast iron, it really lasts!!Mom's old 10" skillet and round grill work great, and have lots of character.I wonder if Teflon would last 50+ years...

Editorial Review

Every kitchen needs a cast-iron skillet like this, if only to properly brown meats. It's perfect for just about any frying chore and goes into the oven as a roasting pan and even as a baking pan. (It's the traditional "skillet" in skillet corn bread.) Because cast iron is unexcelled for retaining heat and distributing it evenly--no hot spots--foods cook uniformly in the 8-inch skillet. It's heavy, must be seasoned with melted shortening and baked, and needs to be coated with oil or cooking spray after each use to prevent rust. Though its weight and care put off some cooks, cast iron--as has been known since the Middle Ages--permits precise cooking and flavor retention, is naturally nonstick when seasoned, and lasts for generations, increasing the value of its moderate price. As it blackens with use, cast iron imparts to food a mystical aura of rustic nourishment and flavor. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Skillets like Momma used to have.
Food just doesn't taste the same fried in cheap aluminum skillets.I would go so far to say that it's not really a "skillet" unless it's a cast-iron skillet! And Lodge is one of the best currently making them today.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like Lodge
I have 3 of these. One was a gift about 30 years ago and then I bought two more when I found them on sale.Great for re-heating, grilling a sandwich, making hashbrowns, you name it.Food doesn't stick like it does in my stainless cookware.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential piece of kitchen equipment
This is a key piece of kitchen hardware. Cast iron is 100% better than stainless steel, it gets hot and stays hot. It is effectively nonstick once it's seasoned and provided you add food at the correct temperature. Do NOT use soap to clean seasoned cast iron, just hot water and a brush. Seasoned cast iron is what Teflon is meant to be.

--Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This skillet better be good!
I ordered this skillet in JULY.It is almost October and I still have not received it.It has been delayed twice and I just heard that it might not arrive until almost November. I would cancel the order, but I have already received the lid, which arrived promptly from Amazon. So I wait.I was excited about getting this because I like cast iron and buying a US-made product was appealing.I suspect the problem has more to do with Lodge than Amazon, because Lodge's website has a note about how "popular demand has made it difficult for them to make certain products available."Memo to Lodge: You're losing customers! Hire a few more folks and crank out more skillets!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great skillet but large for most stovetops
This skillet is great. However, I would caution people that it's a little too big for most electric-coil burners, and so the outer ring of the skillet doesn't get hot and food won't cook right. My 12" Lodge skillet gets much more stovetop use. This one mainly gets used for roasting meat in the oven. Of course if you have an especially large burner on your stove, then enjoy! I would also recommend buying the pre-seasoned skillet for the same price, if it's available to you; it's not hard to season a skillet, but it's nice to not have the trouble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cast Iron: Heavy, Versatile and You'll Love It!
I like to cook in a variety of ways: stovetop, oven, grill and campfire. There is only one type of pan that answers the call under all of these conditions: cast iron.I have a set of high quality non-stick cookware that has served me well. BUT...you can't use metal utensils, place it in the oven and heaven forbid..put it on the grill. One of my colleagues gave me an old cast iron skillet a few years ago and it had that beautiful black patina characteristic of well-seasoned iron pans.I was hooked!I have greatly expanded my collection of cast iron pans, all from Lodge, and in spite of their weight, they consistently produce superior results. This pan is large and heavy but has no hot spots, thus heating uniformly. These pans require some special treatment: proper seasoning, NO SOAP and a thin wipe with shortening after each use, but you will have a pan that will be your culinary companion for life ...
