1-0 out of 5 stars Cuisinart CEK-40 Electric Knife -- needs to be modified
I bought this knife and wanted to use it to carve up a roasted pig for a luau party I was having. The knife was a little under powered, it seemed to struggle when cutting larger slices. The pig was quite large (60 lbs) and after about 20 minutes of continuous use the knife became quite warm and stopped working. After a few choice explectives I handed it to my husband. Lucky for me my husband is a mechanical engineer who owns his own business which includes a metal working machine shop. Later that week he took it apart and discovered that there is a very fragile plastic Nylon gear that is part of the main drive. The plastic teeth on the gear were stripped and that is why the knife stopped working. He told me he did a few quick gear calculations (he is a smart fellow) and determined that the plastic nylon gear teeth strength was way underpowered for the design. He was able to make a duplicate gear out of stainless steel in his machine shop and assembled the new metal gear into the knife replacing the junk plastic one. Since that time the knife has worked flawless. I have since carved all sorts of roasts, pork, turkeys and no matter how long or hard the carving is, even if I hit a bone, it never stopped working. The Cuisinart engineers should be embarrased, this is such an easy fix to make (all they need to do is change out the Plastic nylon gear for a metal one, maybe cost them an extra 10 cents?), it is like they never did any research and developement on this product because I know if they tried to cut anything other then bread the dam knife would stop working after about 10 minutes of use. I would say that all the good reviews here are from people slicing bread, if you want to slice meat and use the knife for more then 10 minutes you will need to find an engineer and a machine shop to replace the plastic gear, after that it works great.

This is my first electric knife, and I'm glad I read the reviews here on it before buying it.Works like a charm, easy to clean and operate, and makes slicing our homemade bread very easy.

No special expertise is required to cut professional-looking slices, thick or thin, from roasts, ham, turkey, and bread with the powerful 100-watt electric knife in this carving set. Just grasp the handle, pull the trigger, draw the knife in a straight line, and let the two serrated blades, which saw back and forth at high speed, do the work. It's effortless and safe. The knife comes with a two-pronged fork in a compact (15 by 5 by 2-7/8 inches) storage case made of flexible plastic, with a foam insert molded to hold the set. The 7-1/2-inch knife blades and the 12-inch fork are made of stainless steel. The fork is dishwasher-safe, but the blades should be hand washed in hot, soapy water. Read more

I replaced my 35+ year old electric knife with this one - wow, I didn't realize how dull it had gotten! I like the case - it was a little tricky to get into the first time, but the old one didn't have one - it's nice to be able to store it all together. Nice and sharp.

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTED
I bought this knive about 6 months ago. When I first started using it it was great. After about 2 weeks it became so dull I had to throw it away. This knife can't be sharpened.I recently bought a better knife that can be sharpened and I am very happy with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stayed sharp for a couple days
I got a Pure Komachi Chef's Knife last year and enjoyed it the first couple times I used it.After that, the blade got dull and since you can't sharpen it, it became useless.I'm afraid there is no such thing as a "forever sharp" knife.I couldn't even cut a cherry tomato with the Komachi without having to saw through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars $15.99 must be a misprint!
This is definitely in the class of Henckels ($80).Solid and nice looking.I purchased 3.What a great gift!It even comes nicely packaged.Definitely not a 'Chinese Cheapo'!

5-0 out of 5 stars No better value for the money
I'll start by admitting that I'm a Wusthof fan. As far as my knives go; even though I'll freely admit that the Calphalon Traditional series are an excellent value, my Wusthof Classic set is enough better to justify the price difference in my eyes. That loyalty stops fast when it comes to things like meat forks. Yes, the Wusthof is a little beefier, but the Calphalon is more than good enough for any conceivable home use at one-fifth the price. This fork is a pleasure to use for both carving and turning roasts and such. In fact, my only complaint is that at this time, they don't offer a curved fork as well (anyone listening out there?). If you are in the market for a fork like this, there is simply nothing else I've seen that even remotely approaches it for quality and value.

5-0 out of 5 stars the decade's bargain in cutlery
While manufactured in China, you'd never know it were it not forthe small "made in China sticker. forged from Solingen steel( rumors say it is provided by the High end A.B. Dick cutlers.)perfectly balanced andas as rigid as any carving fork sold by the German big names ( Wusthoff /Trident, Henckels, etc.)but at a fraction ofthe price. In appearance this fork will actually match the big names'top knives. My advise: grab one or two before Calphalon realizes that they can easily doublethe price andstill be competitive ... Read more

With curved prongs and tips notched like fishing hooks, this 13-1/2-inch fork gets a solid grip on roasts, poultry, and big vegetables like baked potatoes. It easily lifts a corned beef, for instance, from pot to carving surface and holds it down firmly for careful slicing. Oxo's Steel line is an all-stainless-steel variant of the company's familiar fat-handled Good Grips line. Rather than being straight-sided, this tool's handle is tapered from heel to finger grip and has satin-finish, stainless-steel panels top and bottom. The handle's sides feature the same design as those in the Good Grips line--they're made of soft processed rubber for comfort, with"fins," or grooves, that flex under pressure, conforming to individual finger grips and providing control when handles are wet or slippery. Like all Oxo tools, this fork is dishwasher-safe; a hole in its handle facilitates hanging on a hook or peg. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Fork?
This may well be the perfect fork. I like the OXO series of cutlery, and this is no exception. This fork is very well balanced and has a wonderful handle that is secure and resists slippage. 5-0 out of 5 stars Love the new handle!
I almost bought a Good Grips meat fork with a rubber handle until I saw this one. I love Good Grips kitchen tools, and have come to depend on the brand when I'm looking for a nice, solid, reasonably priced kitchen tool. However, in the past, my one complaint has been that when I store utensils in a crock next to the stove, those non-slip handles that I love stick together, and it becomes impossible to grab just one tool - you wind up pulling out 6. This handle fixes that problem. It still has the nice, comfortable handle with rubber on either side for grip, but the stainless steel is much easier to grab quickly out of the crock. I'll definately be looking for more tools with this handle. The fork itself is nice and sturdy, a good size, and handles well. I would reccommend this product. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This two-piece carving set benefits from J.A. Henckels's 260 years in the cutlery business. The sharp carving fork holds that roast or ham steady while the 8-inch slicer/carver glides easily through the meat. They're made from high-grade, rolled stainless steel, produced using Henckels's own Sintermetal Component Technology. This process allows different grades of steel to be combined to form a single integral piece capable of withstanding extreme stress--each part of the knife is made from the grade of steel with the optimum characteristics for that component. The cutting edge features a specially designed serration pattern, ensuring prolonged sharpness without resharpening. The full-length tang (meaning the metal continues all the way through to the end of the handle) gives you a better-balanced and stronger knife. The polypropylene handle with rustproof rivets is nearly indestructible. Both utensils are dishwasher-safe, but be careful that they don't touch other objects; hand washing is recommended to keep steel blades scratch free. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Pride in the Slice
For those of us who want everything to look perfect on the serving platter, I recommend this slicer. It's hollow grind gives you total control over the width of the slice, and its wide blade makes it easy to transport the meat from the cutting board. Plus, the high carbon steel gives you an edge that could easily be mistaken for a laser - forgive the cliche, but it finds its way though any meat as though it were butter.Read more

Handles are narrower and shallower than those of the company's premier lines--a feature those with small hands might appreciate. Read more
