Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and theside-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents.Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. Read more

    • Leaves no sharp edges on can or lid
    • Patented side-wind mechanism cuts easily
    • Makes no contact with can contents
    • Easy-turn, soft-grip knob and non-slip handles
    • Dishwasher-safe

5-0 out of 5 stars EXELLENT PRODUCT
This can opener is well worth spending a little extra money for.I had bad experiences with two cheaper smooth-edge type can openers, one left metal shavings along the rim of the can after opening (GROSS!) and one just plain broke after one use. This OXO Good Grips can opener is sturdy and feels like cutting through soft butter while moving around the can.It also leaves a very clean cut and the lid pops on or off the can like a dream.Highly recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible design
I bought one of these while looking for a side cutting can opener. It works great for the standard soup can size. However, the handle is mounted on the side which means that when you try to open larger diameter cans with it, the handle bumps into the can and doesn't turn! What's the point of having a replacable lid on your food if the only cans you can do it to are the tiny sizes? Whomever designed this thing should be homeless.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best I have used
I'll make this review simple. This is the best hand-held can opener I have ever used. It fits in your hand comfortably, turns with minimal effort, and does the job with ease. Since the lid won't fall into the can once you have it open, this is as good as it gets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For
As I always do, I did lots of research on electric can openers before buying the West Bend.I have a manual side opening one made by ONO which is also great, but since I open at least 6 cans of dog food/day, I wanted to go electric.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very sexy
This is a gorgeous appliance. It cuts nicely and is easy to work with, however, I dislike how tightly the magnet holds onto the lid.I have to hold the piercing handle with one hand and remove the lid with the other to avoid being cut.

    Editorial Review

With the Lids Off jar opener, Black & Decker has simplified the opening of jars to a no-strain, one-hand operation. Electrically powered, the Lids Off cradles a jar on its lower turntable then grips its lid when you lower the upper housing. Push the large power button, and—voila!—the lid is twisted free. Designed for use on metal or plastic lids, the opener makes a handy tool for anyone and can be especially helpful for those with weak hands or arthritis. The unit accommodates a wide range of jars, from baby food to spaghetti sauce, anything up to 4-1/2 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. It is not intended, however, for the very narrow necks of beer bottles or tall jars of juice. Measuring 8-1/2 by 7-3/4 by 10 inches, the Lids Off is collapsible for space-efficiency and comes with built-in power cord storage. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a great gift!
I bought this as a gift for someone with arthritis in their hands and it has helped them tremendously!Great buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars a big disappointment
I have arthritis in my hands, so opening jars is painful for me.We bought this as a Mother's Day gift, and it worked well about 4 times.Although it never did open large jars. Then it stopped working at all. It's bulky, takes up too much space in my kitchen -- all in all, a dead waste of time, energy, money, and space.A big, big disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more sore hands!
Sorry I didn't buy this jar opener sooner. It is so easy to use.I used it within minutes of its arrival.Bottles I was afraid to bring home from the store in the past for fear I would not be able to open them, no longer is the case.Love to show others how easy it is to use.My hands enjoy not being in pain due to trying to open jars.

One of Rösle's superb kitchen tools, this 8-inch can opener isbrilliantly designed to provide safety and hygiene. Instead of cuttingdown through a lid, as conventional openers do, it smoothly cuts alongthe side of a can's rim. That means it doesn't leave behind a hazardoussharp edge and the lid can't fall into the can. It also means theopener never touches the can's contents. Like all Rösle tools, utensils, and Open Kitchen storage components, the opener is madeprimarily of 18/10 stainless steel, although this tool has a ruggedplastic head. The round handle is stainless steel with a satin finishto conceal finger marks. The handle is sealed against water and has ahanging ring so the opener can be conveniently stored on a hook in theOpen Kitchen system of Rösle basic rails and Gridwalls or hung on anyhook or peg. The opener is sturdy, balanced, and exceptionallycomfortable in the hand. All Rösle products are made in Germany andcarry a lifetime warranty against defects. The can opener should behand washed to protect its cutting wheel. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practice
This takes a little practice to get used to putting the opener properly on the can. However, once you do, it works extremely well- it turns smoothly and cans are opened cleanly, regardless of can size. I especially like having no sharp edges!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rosle Rules!
This can opener absolutely is as good as other reviewers say and well worth the money. The only folks who won't like it are those with severe problems (carpal tunnel, arthritis) gripping a kitchen tool, and they will prefer a power can opener.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's honestly the BEST can opener i've ever used!!!
This is honestly the very best can opener i've ever used.I"ve tried plenty of other "safety" can openers that claim they cut below the rim of the lid so that there are no sharp edges. My problems with all these OTHER saftey can openers are as follows: (1) it's hard to line up the cutting wheel with the lid; (2) if/when you do line it up, the turning of the cutting wheel is difficult and labored; (3) you don't know when you've gone all the way around, since there's nothing to indicate you've passed the starting poing (in fact, i think with some of these other safety can openers, i'm re-cutting a whole new line into the can which doesn't line up with the old line b/c there's no guide to keep it perfectly even); and (4) it's nearly impossible to lift off the lid.

With a large, smooth, plastic twist handle that fits nicely in the palm, this can opener operates with a minimum of effort. Flexible rubber fins on the handle absorb the tension necessary to keep the opener in place, while sharp, stainless-steel teeth bite into lids with the agility of a great white shark. 5-0 out of 5 stars great design
my wife tends to be "can opener challenged".I know it sounds crazy, but true. She had no problem with this one.It had the easiest mechanics, and it even had a bottle opener.

3-0 out of 5 stars lightweight, but ok
well i like my women with meat on, not too much, not too little. this thing is just a tad on the skinny model side of life. so i am not too sure of it's life-span. from the heft and feel. maybe a few years. my old one was ok, but while on the downhill side of life, a big handle is of value (torque is good), so tis is a replacement. the old one is still alive and sharp and does a bang up job, save the torque thing. now i am ok with miss runway, but like a glamour gal she is on the pricey side...oh i'd say 8-9bucks would be a real deal. 15, well i am not shouting out in glee 'look how much i paid'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money!
After years of cheap can openers and much aggravation with them, I splurged on this Oxo. It is totally worth the money! It feels solid in your hand, the handle turns very easily, and it glides through metal. It is very comfortable and effortless to use. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price
In the process of replacing all of the small appliances in my kitchen, I decided to go with black or black/brushed metal for all of the new items, and I realized it was time for the 11-year-old white drugstore can opener to go. I recoiled at spending over $20 for a can opener, but I didn't want something that wasn't going to do the job; then I found this little beauty on clearance at my local grocery store. What a great product! It certainly fills the bill, in that it's black, and it opens cans! I haven't tried the knife sharpener yet, but this unit does a great job opening cans. It's much quieter than its predecessor, and I have had no problems whatsoever opening large, tall cans. It's true the cutting assembly does pop off a bit too easily, but to me, at this price point, it's also easily popped back on and forgiven. I'd buy this unit again in a second.

5-0 out of 5 stars great lil opener
Bought this opener because I was tired of trying to open tall cans with an average size electric opener. Not only does it open cans that are taller, but it does it with ease. Locks on can top, stays on through entire cycle. My last opener would often get half way through the can and miss spot before juming off track. Not this one! I am very pleased.

    1-0 out of 5 stars wouldn't hold a charge
I loved it when I first got it.I charged it by the directions, and used it for all my cans with no problem. When it ran out of juice I recharged it according to the directions. The next day it wouldn't work.It had enough power to turn if I closed it by hand, but it wouldn't cut through a lid.I held it closed and ran it out and tried to charge it once again (that was from the troubleshooting guide).Still couldn't cut through a lid.It would run if I closed it by hand, but it never cut a lid again.I tossed it and bought a manual one that still works.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gizmo is hard to handle
My Gizmo is extremely hard to position, to get it started cutting. After 4 or 5 tries, I finally get it started - but it's very frustrating. Also, since it lacks a handle, it is hard to handle while trying to position it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Handy but clunky
The Gizmo works somewhat well, but can be hard to start on the lip of the can, and most of the time, when it's through, and U lift the arm to remove the can lid, the little arm w/the magnet wants to pop off. Slight bit of nusance. Also, unless it's always plugged in, resulting in an absolutely full charge, she will get a bit 'sleepy' after about the third can.Bought it for someone who has limited hand mobility, and she is unable (most of the time) to even load the Giz-no on to the lip. Resulting in me opening the can anyway, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. I rate this as an 'Okay' item. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I bought this based on the other reviews, but mine stopped working within six months of purchasing it.It needed constant cleaning of the part that wasn't removable, in addition to sharpening ... and no, I wasn't using it to cut steel or pouring syrup all over it - just opening cans.We ended up buying a replacement at a drug store for $8 that has worked exponentially better than this thing.I am quite comfortable saying that it is by far the worst appliance I have ever owned.Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would purchase again
I used my moms, and I was sold....so I purchased mine.I then loved it so much more, I came back and purchased 3 more for gifts. Its a great idea and very handy.I have to admit, I am one of those that used a stationary until the blade got nasty (you can only keep it clean so long) then I would throw it away and buy another $10 one....not a problem any longer with this...the blade comes right off...not worries.

The Deluxe Safety LidLifter is the perfect 7-inch kitchen tool for anyone tired of dodging the jagged edges of cans and lids. Unlike conventional openers, the Safety LidLifter cuts into a can below the rim of the lid, so there are no sharp edges, the blade never touches the food, and the final turn of the crank doesn't inconveniently drop the lid into the can's contents. The turning mechanism works smoothly for both right- and left-handers, and the soft turning knob provides a comfortable grip. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal new way to open cans
I knew of this method of opening cans to leave them with no sharp edges and easy to pour product out.But this can opener is very high quality and very impressive. It is stainless steel to avoid rusting. and even has a griper to pull the freed lid up and off if needed.A really great use on on products that are solid like bean and bacon condensed soup.If you use the pull top easy open lid to open it, you get a lip around the can that prevents easy removal of the product. With this can opener you get no lip and the product slips out easily!

    Editorial Review

It seems an affront to simply call this product a can opener. Sure, it does that, but it takes can opening to a new level by making safety a priority. It carefully opens cans from the side and not the top, so that you won't get your fingers messy trying to retrieve the lid. But best of all, a special feature allows it to smooth the edge of the can as it cuts, leaving behind a flat--and safe--surface. It also includes a built-in a knife sharpener for convenience. And no hassling with extra electrical cord lying on your counter top: a retractable feature tucks the extra cord away neatly into the base. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best can opener on the market
I've had mine for 3 years now and it works perfectly every time. Sometimes the Generic cans may have a little extra glue around the lid seam and will need to be 'eased' off by hand after opening, but without the sharp edges that other openers leave, this is quite safe. I'm buying one for my elderly mother because of its safety and reliablility.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Love-Hate Relationship
I believe I have figured out the bipolar ratings attached to the Hamilton Beach 76600 can opener.I am convinced that it is a matter of quality control.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty smooth once you get the hang of it...
Once you figure out how exactly to hold the can in order to get the opener to grab it and open it, the Smooth Edge can opener by Hamilton Beach is a great product. I have trouble with my wrists and hands and was just absolutely unable to use my manual smooth edge opener any longer, so this purchase was necessary. However, with my past dealings with this company's customer service department, I knew that if I had any problems, I would be well taken care of. If you have no patience and want a gadget to sit on your counter that you can grab and use without thinking...I would not recommend this product. However, if you can spare a little time to figure out how to work it properly and can follow directions, this is STRONGLY recommended! ... Read more

Works smoothly- not like your grandma's can opener! I've been using it everyday since I received it and it's just like new.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Can Opener Ever!!
This is truly the best can opener I have ever owned. Makes a simple process what it should be, simple and easy. It is heavy and durable, but comfortable. Opens cans with almost no effort. I liked it so much I ordered five more as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Can Opener
I do not write many reviews but I wanted to express my opinion on this can opener. I have had so many problems with other openers in the past and I have finally found one that is not only durable but works GREAT! I had the OXO opener for the past year and it was ok but it it wore out quick. This can opener is much more durable and the ease of use is way better than the OXO. The price is definately worth it, in fact I am thinking of getting some of these for family members. ... Read more

Using your stand mixer to open tin cans seems beneath the machine's power, but then again, the stand mixer is all about versatility. The can opener attachment is a single, hefty piece of steel; attach it to the mixer's motor hub and position the can under the cutting blade. Pull the handle up and over and the can locks in place. Turn the power to speed 2 and watch it go. The stand mixer's weight balances heavy cans and its height accommodates tall ones. And while it's completely practical, its greater appeal is that it's fun to use. You might find yourself opening cans just so you can watch them twirl. Read more

A great can opener rather than all this crap being sold which gets dirty, rusty and a pain to use with some tins. Always works!

After you finally get the can attached, you must push it up and let it complete about 3-4 complete turns before the can is completely opened

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic can opener
If you need to open cans and have a good space to mount it, this is the can opener to get.Just put a can in it, crank the handle a few times (easy) and your done. Its a pleasure to use, a solid unit but not bulky. It swings out of the way when you dont need it.Its not going to get lost and you dont need to spend time looking through a drawer for that can opener. My can operner is an off-white color...not as strong a beige as the one in the picture. If you can find a place to mount it, buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars best can opener ever
I've gone through half a dozen can openers in just a few years, and then just as I was despairing that I would never find a decent one that didn't take up a ridiculous amount of space I remembered the wall-mounted Swing-Away that hung for decades on my great-grandmother's wall. I was thrilled to find that they're not only still available, but still inexpensive. I love that it "swings away" (thus the name!) to lie flat against the wall when it's not needed. The pull-down lever secures the can and the crank handle operates very easily, so the whole opening process feels secure and can contents don't slop. I can make "ten can soup" without feeling like my hands are going to break off or like the can opener's going to fall apart! I give these as housewarming gifts now. As others have pointed out, they do need a sturdy mounting point, like a solid wood cabinet or a wall stud (you may need to substitute longer screws than are provided). I'm confident that mine will last for decades just like Great-Grandma's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swing Away Wall Can Opener
It's the best.I ordered two to replace the two that had worn out (but only after years of faithful service) . . . One for my home and one for our summer hideaway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Change to one star!
This is my edited last review of this can opener. I reviewed it earlier and mentioned I would follow-up if necessary. I fear the product has a major problem. Again I used it about 4 times and it was simply outstanding. My wife used this second one today and managed to break it again her first try! The same plastic insert that busted before broke again. They obviously have a problem with this insert as I cannot imagine it breaking the second time around. Granted, my wife may not have the skill level I have when using a can opener, however, I now have no choice but to give up this little venture and buy the "West Bend" can opener which has such great reviews here on "Amazon.com". The up-side is that I will save $25.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but doesn't open the cans....
I am very disappointed with this product. As listed in the prior comments, it is indeed very beautiful and I love the look of it in my kitchen. However, it is nearly impossible to get it to open a can.It takes many tries before it will pierce the top and most of the time, I just give up and use a hand held opener. I expected more from an expensive Cuisinart appliance. ... Read more
