    Editorial Review

The perfect set to kick off a Fiestaware collection, equip a college dorm room, or pair with other Fiestaware pieces for a larger set, this 20-piece set from Fiestaware consists of four 5-piece place settings--a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup, and saucer. Celebrated in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s for its streamlined art deco look and colorful glazes, Fiestaware is enjoying a remarkable comeback today. All pieces in this set have the signature Fiestaware rings and match Fiestaware pieces in sunflower yellow or other colors such as turquoise or juniper. With over 50 Fiestaware dinnerware and accessory pieces to choose from, you can build your collection over time starting with this four-person set. The 100 percent lead-free glaze is nonporous, so it won't absorb foods, and it's durable enough to withstand the microwave and dishwasher. Some stainless-steel flatware may leave marks on the plates, but these can be easily removed with a nonabrasive cleanser. --Emily Wolf

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
Fiestaware items are objects of beauty that I have found to be virtually indestructible.I have them at my house, and I worked for an upscale wine bar and restaurant that used them for everything...any pretty plate that survives heavy restaurant use is great in my book! And what fantastic colors for food presentation...

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFORMAL SET
We bought these because they were on sale, and it's hard to find black. At the start, they were suppossed to be temporary.
Then we bought extra plates, because we'd fallen in love with them. Not only are they classy and match the decor, but these are tough.I'm a klutz, and these bowls bounce right off of the floor, nothing broken yet, and coming up to a year.
My only complaint is the small size of the cups, and I about never use the saucers, but that's a matter of taste, and there are other sets available.

5-0 out of 5 stars great service, great dishes
I placed 2 different orders for a total of 55 place settings of fiestaware, spread across 10 different colors. The dishes look great. Everything arrived quickly without any hassles & nothing was broken.People who expect to match color off pictures from the web aren't doing their homework.Check colors at local stores & you'll know exactly what you'll be getting. There are also a lot of websites with more pictures and detailed color descriptions. ... Read more

Color Trends by Oneida Ice Collection Light Blue 20-Piece Stainless-S
Average Customer Review: 2.0 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $40.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Both durable and fun, Oneida’s Color Trends Light Blue flatware livens up your casual dining or outdoor eating experience. No lightweight set, this 20-piece collection features triple-riveted, full-tang construction--the sturdy stainless-steel shaft runs the full length of the handle. This design creates a pleasing weight and eliminates the possibility of a fork snapping in 2 in your hand. Oneida’s handles, made from faceted thermoplastic, are comfortable to hold, with nice texture and substantial girth. Their casually stylish, translucent light blue coloring has a summery coolness and contrasts well with the mirror-finish working ends. Both teaspoons and salad forks here are on the shorter-than-average side, but you’ll still find them handy and maneuverable. The set includes 4 place settings, each with an 8-3/4-inch dinner knife, 7-3/4-inch dinner fork, 7-3/4-inch soup spoon, 6-1/4-inch salad fork, and 6-1/8-inch teaspoon. All pieces are safe in the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money!
We purchased this flatware set at a retail store 2 weeks ago. We already have moisture under the handle from washing them. Also, the brads holding the plastic to the handle have already rusted on some pieces.Unfortunately, I no longer have the receipt, so we're out $40.
My advice... purchase a different set!

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective design.
I received two sets of the color trend flatware for christmas.
At first glance I was pleased.Great colors, nice feel to the metal...I removed them from the box, washed them and threw the box away.Big mistake.THe first piece broke the day after Christmas. 3 months later I have about 4 pieces left of the original 40 pieces. The problem (as a previous poster has mentioned) is that the handles fill with water when washed then the plastic cracks and falls off.Save yourself some $$, this flatware is a complete waste.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kind of Rusty
This is a great first set of silverware. Its cheap price and colors are very attractive. However, even though they have rivets, they tend to rust around the rivets when left exposed to water longer than a few minutes. You get what you pay for so if you like the color they are worth it. ... Read more

These glasses are beautifully weighted, dishwasher-safe, and sturdy without feeling clunky. The double old-fashioned glass is 4-1/2 inches tall and holds 14-1/2 ounces; the cooler glass is 6 inches tall and holds 17 ounces. There are eight of each per set. Are these glasses cobalt blue? Midnight blue? Ink blue? Whatever association the color conjures, it is the deepest, most sumptuous blue around. And whether blue glass sends your imagination sailing off to the Mediterranean or to Bristol, England (famous for its blue glass since the 17th century), with these glasses, bubbly water with a wedge of lemon becomes a sacrament. --Erin Brown ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great to drink from
these are great glasses, not as boring as clear glass, drinking a cafe Alaska (espresso and Breyer's Coffee ice cream) in the shorter one now.I wanted to give a review after reading the review about the person with the breakage problem. These are made of glass so of course they will break. And what about the person that wrote of stacking them?I learned as a boy that putting a glass inside another glass might cause it to get stuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Them :-)
I love everything about these pretty glasses.
They are attractive and more durable than most
glasses I've had in the past. They are thicker too
so they keep your liquids colder or hotter longer.

The price is fabulous for the quality of this drinkware.
They are a little too wide for certain areas
of my dishwasher but it's worth it to me to
change things around to fit them in :-)

I keep some stored in my freezer and some
in the cabinet. They frost well and oh, did I say
    I loved them?:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful glasses make every occasion special
I am so glad that we purchased these glasses! Even drinking ice water on a hot day feels like a celebration with these classy glasses. They are more durable than regular clear glass (tipped one over on my counter and it didn't break!) and as previously indicated, easily stackable. Now with free shipping, they are even better!

We purchased ours two years ago (and I reviewed them then, under a different username).Since then, we have lost only three to breakage. We will purchase another set - I'm so afraid they'll be discountinued, now that they are marked as clearance items. These are gorgeous and HIGHLY recommended. You won't regret your purchase. ... Editorial Review

Regular coffee drinkers who are impatient to get their fix willdelight in leaving the sleek, Scandinavian-designed C-Mill coffeegrinder out on their countertop. Not just for good looks, the slantedgrinding bowl actually has a purpose: it rotates the coffee beans for amore even grind. The stainless-steel bowl and blade can grind a maximumof 45 grams of coffee beans at a time. To operate, simply snap on thelid and depress the red button on top to grind. And, in case the C-Milldoes get stored in a cabinet, the cord can be neatly tucked away in itsbase. The bottom pulls out to wind the cord within the bottom of thecoffee grinder and then pops back in for storage.--Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cracked case
Had this grinder for 8 months. Two large cracks have formed in the side of the unit, now they are widening and trapping lots of coffee grounds.I'm tossing it and getting a different brand. All form, no function.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice design, poor materials.
I purchased this coffee grinder in July of 2003.I love the design and the color matches our other teal accented kitchen items perfectly. It does a decent job of ginding coffee, but after only 5 months, of once a day use, it started to develop vertical stress cracks in the plastic casing around the top.As of right now (January 2004), more cracks have developed and the initial cracks have become even longer (going down below the interior stainless steel "bowl").Because of all the cracks, the lid now fits very loosely, and I'm afraid that with more use, the cracks will continue to extend downward, rendering the entire unit unusable. The stainless steel cased version may be the way to go, but since we don't have any stainless steel accessories in our kitchen, I will be replacing my grinder with another brand. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not pratical
i purchased this phone as an '03 princess themed christmas, and it's still "working".i'm just happy my daughter is only 2, becasue the phone is only for looks, i'm not too sure about the quality as some of the other reviews, because i don't get to talk on it long, being i hang up on everyone that i talk too (as the buttons are so out of place)....so if you're buying this as a decorative piece to sit near the lamp on the night stand, go right ahead, because it is definately CUTE

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks Great, Quality terrible
We bought this phone for our daughter to have in her room. How cute we thought... Well it is very cute to look at, but to use as a phone its terrible. The sound quality is awful. We actually get echoes when talking on it.And we are constantly hanging up on people as is our daughter as the hangup button is right where you would have your cheek on the phone. So for looks its great, for a phone not so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my little princess!
Santa brought this last Christmas for my 8-year-old daughter. She absolutely loves it, and all of her friends want it. The rings are awesome, and when you push the "find" button it says, "Hey, I'm over here" instead of just beeping like most phones. I have accidentally hung up on people while using the phone, usually because I'm trying to do 5 other things while on the phone. My daughter hasn't had any problems, and the phone pretty much stays in her room. I wouldn't want it for a main living area, but I think it was really meant for little girls, anway. ... Read more

    Dualit 4-Slice Toaster, Petal Pink

    Editorial Review

Engineered in England and hand-assembled to the last detail, the Dualit 4-slice toaster is that ideal accomplishment--a hardworking kitchen appliance with an elegant presence. Its curvy retro shape is undeniably handsome and its structural components withstand the rigors of a high-octane kitchen. In fact, the toaster can output up to 130 slices per hour, should the entire neighborhood ever depend on you for breakfast or tea.

The key to Dualit's exceptionally even browning is the toaster's system of patented ProHeat elements, a series of flat bars behind a smooth, transparent coating. The result is an efficient, durable design, suitable for everything from brioche to sandwiches. The elements are encased by a rugged, stainless-steel housing that you may not even recognize as a relative of its lightweight, plasticky peers. Each slot measures 28 mm wide and is extra deep to allow for the use of the Dualit sandwich cage (sold separately). One adjustable leg accommodates uneven surfaces and rubberized feet protect your countertop.

The Dualit toaster has manually operated functions and is designed for people who like to engage with their appliances. Operation is simple but rewarding. A rocker switch selects 2- or 4-slice toasting, and a 4-minute timer knob lets you fine-tune browning time. Instead of a pop-up function that can prematurely cool toast, the unit comes with an ejector knob that you raise when you're ready for it. For smaller households or busy kitchens, Dualit also makes 2- and 3-slice models. All Dualit toasters come with a one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well and makes you feel good
Great appliance that delivers great toast and adds to the feel of the kitchen. Only desire would be a couple of wider toast slots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Toaster!!!
I received the Dualit toaster yesterday and spend last evening making toast, toast, and more toast....wanting to see if my investment was worth it.I'm pleased to say that I'm extremely happy with the results.

I tried several kinds of bread of varying thicknesses (store bought and artisan), bagels, and even homemade English muffins which usually need the broiler to prepare.Althought the first batch (as the directions indicate) takes a little longer than subsequent batches, the toaster was very fast.I achieved consistant browning on both sides and in all slots.

Any concerns I had at investing more than $300 for a toaster vanished quickly.it seems to be a real workhorse, is solidly built, and has a minimum of parts to break, unlike most toasters on the market today. And it looks great!!!!

I'll give an update in a month or two, but so far, I could't be happier.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this toaster!
I have wanted a Dualit Toaster for a long time. When Amazon had a great deal a few weeks ago, I got one. I toast some sort of bread almost every day of the week. I had never had an English muffin exactly the way I wanted it until I got my Dualit. Yes, there is a little learning period, but, be patient and it will be really worth the time. It is an excellent appliance.

Yes, it is expensive, but, you do get what you pay for and this toaster is definitely worth it.

I just received two of the sandwich cages. I have not used them yet but will be happy to review those when I do.

I had a well equipped kitchen before and now it's pretty much complete. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off. --Betsy Danheim

    From the Manufacturer

The Artisan mixer's strong 325-watt motor delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily.

The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl with ergonomic handle is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable.

    Unique Mixing Action

The beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This unique mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl.

    Multiple Speeds

10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job; from very high to very slow stir. It's easy to select the precise speed needed for a perfect mix.

    Versatile Accessories

The flat beater, dough hook, and the professional wire whip add to the versatility of the mixer. The flat beater is the ideal accessory for mixing normal to heavy batters. From cake mixes to firm cookie dough, the flat beater mixes quickly and thoroughly.

The dough hook mixes and kneads yeast dough, saving both time and the effort of hand-kneading. The wire whip incorporates the maximum amount of air in whipped mixtures for fluffier whipped cream and angel food cakes.

All attachments are solidly constructed, and attach easily to the stand mixer.

    Easy Clean Up

The pouring shield fits around the top of the bowl and prevents ingredient splash-out. The chute makes it convenient and easy to add ingredients.

The tilt-back mixer head allows for easy access to bowl and beaters. A lock lever holds the mixer head securely in place and the bowl fastens tightly to the base.

    Optional Attachments

Optional attachments (sold separately) complete the package to make cooking a pleasure. From citrus juicer to sausage stuffer, KitchenAid stand mixers can handle just about any job in the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy one for your significant other!!!
I bought one as an X-mas gift for an ex-girlfriend that I have a rocky friendship with and now she cooks up good stuff for me all the time!It makes hanging out with her a lot more enjoyable, and she freaked out about the color and it gave her an excuse to deocrate her whole kitchen pink and white. If you gave one of these to your current ladyfriend I bet that you would reap the benefits multiple times a day for a very long time.

It was a very very high quality product and I will look to the KitchenAid brand first whenever I have to buy kitchenwares/appliances in the future.Great color selections, great quality, very good power.

    Would highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great essential for the baker in your life....you!
I love the mixer's power, capacity and ease of use. It makes even garlic mashed potatoes heavenly. I selected a black model to match my Viking kitchens without realizing the color would need more frequent cleaning. If you use this mixer every day buy a cover or another color to save time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I got this mixer about a month ago. I've wanted one for years, but always talked myself out of it (too expensive, too big, etc.) After finding a great deal here on Amazon, I finally caved in and let me say, I'm glad I did. I love this mixer! I was worried I wouldn't use it very much, since I already have a very nice bread machine (a "Zo"). I find that I'm using it all the time though. It really is like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. Cookie dough is so much easier. I'm also making bread with it constantly. It's just so simple to throw the ingredients in the mixer and let it do all the kneading. I've been making fresh bread and bagels every week and it's been no hassle. It handles the dough very well and stays put. It's a big heavy machine. The only problem I was having with it was I was finding it very difficult to remove the bowl to clean it after I was done mixing something. My husband suggested rubbing some vaseline on the bottom edge and that has solved the problem completely. Now I can pop the bowl off with one hand. Anyway, if you've been wanting one of these and if you like to bake at all, do youself a favor and get one. You will be amazed at how much easier it will make your life. I only wish I'd gotten one years ago! ... Read more

Wharfedale LoudMan Portable Stereo Speaker System (Blackcurrant Purple)
Average Customer Review: 2.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $49.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Lightweight and small enough to fit in your pocket, yet powerful enough to fill a room with sound, the LoudMan portable powered speaker system is all that's needed for a laptop, portable CD player, minidisc, or MP3 device. LoudMan provides superb stereo sound from powered speakers in a shell no bigger than a double-CD case. Wharfedale's use of NXT surface sound technology allows for small, thin speakers whose quality is far superior to the traditional small multimedia units that most people are familiar with. A built-in amplifier will accept a signal from any .125-inch minijack stereo output (cable provided), and dramatically improves listening experience, whether you're listening to a personal stereo with friends, giving a multimedia presentation, playing a games console, or just reviewing your latest MP3 downloads.

LoudMan uses innovative NXT technology to produce a diffuse sound. Rather than producing directional, coherent waves like standard stereo loudspeakers, NXT panels produce sound from their entire surface. This means the sound is more ambient in nature, having a number of significant benefits, including a more even sound pattern throughout the room. The sound doesn't get louder and quieter as traditional loudspeakers do when you move in and out of their interference patterns. Rather, each listener will hear the same sound, wherever they are in the vicinity.

Supplied complete with a built-in low-consumption amplifier, the LoudMan can be battery powered (it uses 4 AA batteries, supplied) or used with an optional 6V DC adapter. The LoudMan carrying case stores one LoudMan system, a connecting cable, and six compact discs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad sound, good flame effects
While the portability cannot be beat, the sound from these was always terrible. There is no low end and the highs are pure tin.The flames shooting from the battery compartment and the subsequent meltdown 5 months after purchase created quite a light show, but the smell of burning plastic lingered much too long.I'd give these a pass if I were you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Sound - No volume control
I've been looking for a set of battery powered portable speakers for some time now. Unfortunately I wasted my money on these. I can't even listen to these without all the crackling and noise constantly annoying me. My crappy laptop speaker sounds better! If you want these, you can have mine.

1-0 out of 5 stars these are theworst speakers ever
I bought these speakers hoping that they would produce sound better than the internal speakers on my HP laptop. It turned out that these pretty speakers were far worse, having no bass at all and lots of static. After having the speakers turned on for more than 2 hours, the battery life was nearly wasted, as was indicated by the waning clarity and volume of the music. If you want to spend $40 on a decent-sounding pair of speakers, I would recommend going for the conventional ones made by Creative or Altec-Lansing. I personally returned these, and went for some $80 speakers made by Creative, which are just phenomenal. ... Read more

A horrible design--they don't stay in your ears, and in order to hear through them you have to physically hold them in.

2-0 out of 5 stars sound is good, fit is not
this was the first pair of these types of headphones i'd ever bought, so i cheaped out. the sound is decent but if you're going to use them doing any type of physical activity, forget it, they'll be slipping out of your ears, especially running/jogging or any type of exorcising that causes sweat. they will become slippery and impossible to keep in. you'll spend more time fidgeting with them than anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars not a good fit at all, decent sound
These would keep falling out of my ear, not a great design. The sound quality was ok though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT
I love this. My hand is now PAIN FREE. I love the gel and the color. I don't know what that order review was about mine came with the mouse and the gel pad as one piece. I am a complete believer in this product and will never go back to a flat mousepad.

3-0 out of 5 stars Your wrist bone won't pop out after using this one
I bought fellowes gel because it had a comparatively larger area and a large gel pad and a more affordable price. My optical mouse runs pretty smoothly on this pad, although it feels kinds rough at first. However, the gel pad is not soft enough, and your wrist will probably be "uncomfortable" even after using the pad. I would not recommend this pad for hardcore gaming because of its limited surface area, but the gel pad is an added bonus (eventhough it gets scratched easily). Another complaint would be that the gel pad is not uniform. So, the area where the wrist wrests actually feels harder than the adjoining "cliffs." Nonetheless, something is better than nothing!

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning: misleading picture!
The picture for this item implies that it includes the mousepad, keyboard wrist rest, and mini rest. But that is not true; you only get the mousepad.

The product looks cheap in the picture, and the actual product when it arrived matched that impression. But while getting all three for that price would be a good deal, just one is not worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value.
This product delivered what I wanted; a simple, effective, no frills electric toothbrush at a reasonable price. Some cost $35, $40 even $60 which for me is way too much for a toothbrush.

Granted, there is no place to store the brush heads (for more than one user), but I can live with that.If you really need that feature, I believe they have a stepped-up model for around $10? more. But at $20, this product was exactly what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good toothbrush at a good price
A short while back I tried one of the Crest five dollar electric toothbrushes. I generally liked the brush, but decided it would be nice to upgrade. The Crest just seemed a touch shoddy, so I figured I'd do it right and buy a better brush.

Word of mouth said that this Oral B was the one to get. I've had it for about a month now and must say I'm pleased. First off, it is well styled. It looks rather slick in the bathroom. The battery life on the brush is rather good and recharging is easy enough with the charging base/brush holder. My teeth feel cleaner after using this brush than they did after using the Crest electric, or a manual brush for that matter.

My only real quirk with the brush is that it feels like it's putting quite a bit of vibration on my teeth. I'm sure this is a trade-off of the brush's 'Plak Control' effectiveness, but it's worth noting. The small round brush head is easy to get around the back of teeth and most everywhere else. The only place I think this brush can't brush better than an old fashion brush is in between teeth. Due to the fast rotation of the brush head, it seems that the conventional up down brushing of a manual brush would do a better job. This is not to say that the Oral B is bad at cleaning between teeth, but perhaps just not as good. Since I've not had it that long, my opion on this may change.

For the most part this brush is doing a better job of cleaning my teeth than any other brush I've owned. Replacement heads aren't the cheapest items around, but they don't seem too overpriced. My only long term concern is battery life, but with occasional draining of the battery before recharging, I don't think it will be a problem. I'd recommend this brush to anyone considering an electronic tooth brush. Odds are you will be pleased and if you're not, this is an affordable way to test the waters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price for clean teeth
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this toothbrush works really well, given the comparatively low price.

It is user friendly, and you can be up and brushing within minutes of opening the package. It doesn't have any fancy features, but you don't need a lot of frills to brush your teeth.

You use less toothpaste, and your teeth feel a lot cleaner than when you use a regular toothbrush.Additionally, because of the small brush, you can get to the back and sides without any contortions. The soft bristles do a great job on your gums while you brush.

The only negatives are that there is nowhere to store extra brushes, and that it's a bit noisy, but these are not major problems. You also have to remember to discharge it completely every six months.

Great economical choice for clean teeth and healthy gums. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper onEbay
I like the overall looks of my stereo, very cool!!!!!!!! For how my parents spent on it, $399.00 ouch! But it's on Ebay for less, but it's worth the money.Plays mp3's so I have music for hours.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great looking, pleasing performance
Having read the reviews below, I feel compelled to set the record straight.

First, the speakers DO produce bass. It's not the overwhelming blowout hip hop concert kind, but it's bass nonetheless. If you want spine-tingling lows, get a more expensive system -- or one with a subwoofer.Or, better yet, adjust the bass on this system up a step or two.I'm pretty picky when it comes to audio (I also own a pair of B&Ws) and I'm pleased with the overall sound from these speakers.

Second, the system really does look great. One reviewer said it's impossible to turn off the display light. That's not true.Hold down the power button, and the display light turns off completely.Five stars for looks.

The features are great too.I wont go into too much detail here; you can read about that stuff online.I personally like the gradually increasing volume on the alarm (which will wake you up to your favorite CD).

Finally, my complaint:the remote control, which you WILL use, just sucks. It is not backlit, and its shape is such that you have no way of telling which buttons you're hitting in the dark (the buttons are indistinguishable from one another by feel).Result: it's really hard to use the remote at night in bed. This is an example of design run amok.

Otherwise I'm happy with the thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away!
This system is WAY too expensive. I considered buying one until i actually heard it.
There is NO BASS!!! So you have to buy a subwoofer if you want good sound from it.

    Macally iSweet Net USB Mouse

    Electronics

    Editorial Review

So you're a Mac loyalist but you kind of envy the two-button capabilities of the mice made by the competition. What to do? Macally has stepped up to the plate with this USB programmable Internet mouse made specifically for the Mac. Not only does it have two buttons, but it also features a scroll wheel in the middle.

The iSweet Net mouse is compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and higher, so you'll need to update if you're using anything older. Included in the package is a CD with the software you'll need to fully use your mouse (if you don't install it, the mouse will still work but without the bells and whistles). The disc comes loaded with Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 to open the documents. You'll need to install this if you don't already have it, as earlier versions won't work.

The mouse is defaulted to a left single-click button and a right double-click button, but the user's manual will explain how to customize these features. The scroll wheel can be set to line scroll or page scroll at whatever speed you choose--a great asset for professional (or addicted) Web surfers. Using your modifier keys, the mouse can be programmed to recognize most-often used keystrokes.

Ergonomically designed, the elongated mouse rests easily in both the right and left hands. The rounded end cups your palm comfortably to reduce clenching and cramping. To change jackets (they come in all five Mac flavors plus the special edition graphite), wedge your fingernails under the top sections and pop it up. The jacket comes right off, and you can slide another on. --Dana Van Nest

    Pros:

    • Makes Web surfing easier
    • Good-sized mouse for larger hands
    • Durable, clear plastic design

5-0 out of 5 stars Dependable mouse, it even beats the optical version
This is a very good 3-button scroll wheel USB mouse. It's the old-fashioned rubber ball kind, but seems to require less frequent cleaning. Its shape is the same as the MacAlly optical mouse. I have one of each and have to say this old-fashioned mouse is slightly more reliable. I sometimes get strange results with the optical mouse, which is picky about your mouse pad or surface. In contrast, this one works perfectly on foam pads, formica, or wood tabletops and you get the physical feedback that is absent in the optical variety.

The Mac version of iSweetnet works fine on my Windows PC with no special software (also on OS X). The default acceleration and speed seem familiar. My biggest annoyance with mice is that some cause me to grip them tightly while trying to stop the mouse from giving too much movement when a very small (1-pixel) move is needed. The iSweetnet works well out-of-the-box for both very fine and rapid movements.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Mouse but Beware
The first USB mouse that I connected to my Mac was the MS Explorer. You've seen it, the one with the evil red eye on the bottom. It's a very smoothmouse with a great look. I couldn't get all of my software to communicatewith the MS Explorer mouse so I bought the iSweet.

Installed the mouseand was Oh So Happy with the performance. Finally, a mouse with all thebuttons I want, with a pretty good feel and response to boot! However, thenext time I attempted to wake up my Mac from sleep mode it hung on a grayscreen. After some fiddling, I determined that I had an extension conflictbetween the MS Explore extensions and the iSweet extensions. I did my bestto wipe out all the extensions but it ended up taking me several hours towork out the problem.

Who's fault was it? iSweet or Microsoft? Well Italked to the people at iSweet and was less than satisfied with their"tech support". I didn't even bother calling MS since I wasn'tusing their product anymore and it never really worked.

To summarize thisextremely long-winded review, the iSweet mouse is great. I really like it.My only beefs are that it had some conflicts and the iSweet Techies whereno help. Also, it is a bit light--I like my mice to have a bit moresubstance to them. All in all, I'm satisfied with this mouse. But did yousee the new mouse Apple put out? You know the one with the matching evilred eye on the bottom. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good
It's useful, and 256 is a good price i almost paid double that. Anyway I would like to give you some good info on it, if your planning yo put music on it record it manually, yes the sound quality isn't as good, and it takes longer, but... you can have about 5x more music on it, i recorded 5 songs onto a 8mb card.
    just some useful info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surpassed expectations
I had pretty low expectations when I first tried this camera.I had no idea how much it cost as it was a gift.It actually worked pretty well.Picture quality is decent for such a small camera. If you take the time to focus on an object, the picture comes out in focus and with decent color composition.

Plus batter life seemed very good considering you have to use the LCD(no view finder).

Recommended for someone wanting an on-the-go 2nd digital camera for snapshots.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for its size
I would rank its 3 functions in this order: camera, MP3 player, video recorder. Details on each follow:

Camera: As a 2 Megapixel camera, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pictures. This won't replace a dedicated camera, but as a device you can always have with you, it does a good job. Its primrary limitations are the very short range of the flash (making group photos tougher than you would like) and the lack of zoom (it's a fixed-focal length lens set at a pretty wide angle).

MP3 Player: First the bad news - you have to use the supplied software to upload music to be played. The Jukebox software "locks" your music in an attempt to add some sort of digital rights management. Which means if you already have a large library of encoded music, you still have a slow import process to go through before you can put music on the device. Painful and unnecessary. However, the quality of the playback is good. I wish the cord on the headphones was longer. If you put a large SD card in this, you can have a 512mb MP3 player that is also a decent camera for not much more than a 256mb dedicated MP3 player.

Video recorder: This is pretty nominal. Resolution is fixed at 320x240 with a fixed (no zoom) wide angle lens. And you cannot move very quickly or the image immediately blurs. So it's OK as a quick use item and marginally better than the short video functions on most digital cameras. But don't buy this for its video ability.

    Overall pros and cons....

Pros: Great form factor and design. Like the iPod, this is a device you just have to hold in your hands to enjoy fully. It is a pleasure and a delight (it is also smaller than the iPod!). It is really impossible to convey how petite, yet right-sized it is without seeing it in person. Camera is better than you expect and MP3 playback is decent.

Cons: At less then $200, this would be a deal. At current prices, it is slightly steep. Since they only throw in an 8 Mb SD card, count on getting a 128/256 Mb card yourself for photos/music (another $60-120). Or even 512 Mb if you want to do video capture. But be aware that the video mode is pretty nominal. The lack of any optical zoom hurts as well.

Overall, I would recommend to those lookng for a small, all-in-one device. Particularly if you already have invested in SD cards for other devices. Shop around and aim for as close to $250 as possible. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The friendly attitude of the FrancisFrancis! espresso machines is not just a cosmetic matter. Designed and assembled in Italy, the line’s welcoming qualities extend to the brewing process too, so making espresso in your home is pleasurable, simple, and non-intimidating. One of the company’s slimmest models, the FrancisFrancis! X3 machine is built to work with you whether you’re an espresso novice or a skilled barista. Trim, sleek, and fun to look at, it features a brass boiler and a pump-driven brewing system with 8-9 bars of dynamic pressure. The chrome-plated brass brewing handle maintains ideal temperatures for coffee, while the steam/hot water wand swivels for tidy storage.

Brewing can be done with your favorite loose grounds or the eminently simple ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) coffee pods, a pre-measured amount in a teabag-like container. The X3 comes with two brewing handles--one for loose grounds, one for pods--and three baskets to let you choose from ristretto, regular, or lungo shots. A tamper is also included.

A good choice for small kitchens, the X3 measures 10-5/8 by 6-1/4 by 11-3/4 inches, so it has a smaller footprint than many models. The water tank is accessed from behind, and controls are on the side. The top of the machine has a handsome mirror finish, adding a pleasing gleam to accent the playfully bright body. Warranted for one year after purchase, the X3 comes with detailed and illustrated instructions for pulling the perfect shot. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps overpriced but a great home espresso machine
When paired with an espresso capable grinder (like the Gaggia MDF) and freshly roasted beans, this machine is an excellent choice as a stylish home espresso machine, producing superb espresso and good milk foaming.A plus is that the machine is designed (in what may be a unique design) to allow you to froth milk first and then brew the espresso without burning the espresso:this can be useful if you like reducing dishes, since you can foam the milk directly in a cappa or latte cup, and then brew directly into that cup.(This produces a cool visual effect in the cup, and it preserves hot temperatures, crucial to taste.)

While you can save money and get equivalent espresso in a Gaggia Carezza, the X3 is my favorite machine which combines true style and good internals (like a quality brass boiler). An excellent choice for your kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine - Overall best buy for the money
This is a great little machine. It is so versatile. You can use pods or grind your own but you will need to purchase a real tamper (57mm) - the little plastic one just doesn't cut it. What is GREAT about this machine (frankly AMAZING) is that you can steam a jug of milk, run a bit of water through the grouphead, and be at optimal brewing temperature within 10 seconds after you steamed.Even the Isomac Zaffiro can't match that.

The espresso quality is okay when using pods. But with a really good burr grinder and the right tamp, you can pull astonishingly good shots with plenty of crema. All this in such a tiny and cute package. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This is the blender of the future. It performs all thetraditional blending tasks (crushing ice for margaritas, thinning icecream) plus it can be used like a food processor (mincing garlic, puréeing peppers). The wide jar is rounder and squatter thanold-style blenders, which makes it easier to reach in and scrape thesides (when the blender is off!). To reduce splatters of strawberrydaiquiri, the Step Start feature starts blending slowly, then picks upto the chosen speed. This blender also comes with a booklet containing75 recipes--my favorite is the Frosty Chocolate Raspberry Latt&eacute.--Dana Van Nest

Editor's Choice:KitchenAid's five-speed blender has a number offunctions that set it above the crowd as our choice for best blenderunder $100. It starts with the five speed settings and the pulsefunction, which works at any of the speeds--a really nice touch. Theblender's 40-ounce glass jar has a squat shape, making it moremanageable than taller blenders, and comes completely apart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly designed blender
I bought a red one as a Mother's Day gift, but I tried it out just to see if it was worth the price. It didn't disappoint me.
Mom has gone through cheaper blenders at the rate of one every 8 months. This one has the power as evidenced by the much heavier motor base. Jar has plenty of capacity though some fruit lumps will lodge under the blade. Stirring with a chopstick should dislodge the occasional lump. For those who complain about the worn out teeth - you're overloading the machine! Begin in the pulse mode to break up the contents into small pieces before liquifying it - this will prevent motor burnout and the stripping of the teeth. A cheaper blender would have burned out sooner!

1-0 out of 5 stars Rubber Drive Teeth Don't Last
We have had this blender foryears now.We bought it after seeing one that our friends owned. We have used it for milk shakes, smoothies, and crushing ice.Honestly, we loved it.Then the blender our friends owned died. The rubber teeth used to turn the blade disintegrated. We felt bad for them, but never thought such a fate waited for us.Today our rubber drive teeth crumbled into dust.Garbage.Very badly engineered.Don't buy one if longevity means anything to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME...what's with all these competitors' SHILL reviews?
After my Krups died (lasted 4 years) I did a ton of research before I bought this blender, and in the end the choice was just too obvious: there is no other blender in this price range with this amount of sheer power, not even close.

The KitchenAid just blows away the competition from Cuisinart to Braun to Oster to Waring. It certainly was a night and day difference from my old Krups, which took about 3 times longer to do the same work (pureeing 35 oz of bananas and oatmeal with 5 oz of soy milk and yogurt). My sister has the Cuisinart 600watt model and it was also no comparison.

So what sold me on the KitchenAid, despite all the one-star single-reviewers?(NOTE: sure sign of paid shills, aside from the anonymous ones---only one review to their entire history or all their reviews praise one brand and/or attack another brand.)

1.Weight.Simple and consistent indicator of good quality in any electronic device (including speakers, receivers, etc.) is the sheer heft and weight of the thing---I went to a local housewares shop and simply lifted each and every display model. The KitchenAid easily outweighs all the others by almost double.

2.Blade.The KitchenAid's blades are bigger, thicker, and more multi-level than the competition's.Goes through everything in a jiffy.

3.Ease of pitcher movement: very easy to put the pitcher on the machine and take it off, zero twisting---just set it straight down.

4.Nice thick glass on the pitcher.Looks like you could kill somebody with the thing!

    My dislikes:

1.Pitcher is only 40oz, my old Krups had a 50oz pitcher.

2.Plastic/rubber lid is kind of a pain to put on and take off, it's so darn tight.

3.I wish they would just have the simple flip switch controls that the VitaMix blenders have...without the VitaMix price tag, of course!

Now I have to say that I've only had this blender for about a month, but my neighbor has had his for two years and has never had the kinds of problems that many of the MYSTERY reviewers here claim, and the guy is a margarita fiend.

Hmmmm...could this just be a case of badmouthing the competition? ... Read more
