    Editorial Review

Since its first private printing in 1931, The Joy of Cooking has been teaching Americans how to cook. Craig Claiborne calls it "a masterpiece of clarity" and Julia Child says it's the one book she'd keep if she could only have one English title on the shelf. The nearly 5,000 recipes are handily organized by meal and ingredient, and no cooking instruction goes unexplained, so you can finally understand the difference between poaching and braising. The book includes nutritional information as well as an extremely helpful list of measures and equivalents. You'll find a version of every recipe your mother ever cooked, along with straightforward instructions for cooking more exotic specialties such as turtles and muskrats. ... Read more

If I could have only one cookbook, this would it. I use it for everything from traditional fare such as devilled eggs or chocolate chip cookies, to more complicated recipes such as fancy desserts and entres. Everything in the book is presented in a clear, straightforward manner. Everything I've made from the book has turned out well, including several foods that I'd never made before. It's all here: trussing a turkey, how long to bake a chicken based on its weight, how to make a lattice-top crust on a pie, how to whip egg whites, how to make cake icing from scratch... you name it. Maybe the most amazing thing about THE JOY OF COOKING is that it manages to be inviting and unintimidating while at the same time being nearly encyclopedic in its scope.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Cookingbefore "cholesterol-consciousness"
After 2 decades of travel and little home cooking, I retrieved on-line the '53 Joy, and to be sure I never wind up "joyless" again, I've scanned all my favorites into my laptop!

My roommate had the '75, but 2 favorite recipes--for easy pie crust using oil, and for Speculatius (Dutch, please, not Danish cookies) had been changed.I prefer the old...

The '53 pie crust used 1/2 C oil, not 2/3 as in '75; 1/4 C milk, not 3 T, and 1 1/2 tsp salt, not 1 1/4.It rolls out well and if done quickly can be flaky. The changes in '75 didn't work for me--too gooey.

Speculatius--I first had them homemade in Amsterdam, and yes, they can be found in Denmark--imported from Holland. So, I hope some editor will correct the nationality to Dutch.

'75 omits 2 tsp. sour cream, baking soda, the option of 1/16 tsp. cardamom and 1/2 C nuts.It also bakes the cookies at 350 for 10 min. instead of '53's 375 for 12 min. I found the '75 version a big disappointment.

The '53 edition is a testament to a nation that had been released from WW II rationing. It captures a way of life--desserts, sauces, etc. The on-line bookseller I got mine from called it the "genuine pre-heart attack" edition.Yes, this is cooking without concern for cholesterol if you're up for it.

Well worth the investment.I paid $6 plus postage; someone else related paying $43 plus postage--and thought it was worth it!

I stole my mother's early 60's edition (or was it 50's?) and then bought a newer copy for my son.He has requested that he gets mine when I pass on.I have dragged this book around for over twenty years and several states. It is a great reference tool - substitutions, freezing veggies from the garden, cuts of meat, ect.

My two favorite recipes: egg nog and pancakes. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Functional as well as beautiful, the 13 pieces in this cookware set will bring joy to any serious cook. The set includes a 1-quart covered saucepan, a 1-1/2-quart covered saucepan, a 2-quart covered saucepan, and a big, 8-quart covered stockpot (6-1/2 inches high, 9-3/4 inches in diameter). Also included are 8-inch and 10-inch nonstick skillets. (The stockpot lid fits the larger skillet.) Finally, there are three mixing bowls--1-quart, 2-quart, and 3-quart--with snap-on plastic lids.

Except for the plastic lids, all pieces are made of heavy 18/10 stainless steel polished to a mirror finish. The saucepans and stockpot have aluminum cores in their bases to spread heat quickly and evenly. The cores are completely clad in stainless steel for corrosion resistance and easy cleanup. Thick rolled rims add durability and make it possible to pour without dripping. Because the handles are safe to 350 degrees F (they stay cool on the stovetop), the pans, pot, and skillets can be used in the oven. The entire set comes with a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

3-0 out of 5 stars Avoid "Non-Stick" cookware.
Unless you find a bargain like this; then buy them and invest some of the savings into a breath-mask and a wire-wheel brush for your drill to remove it.

Otherwise, the coating will scratch, or burn. That means that at some point during the liftime of the product, you will be eating or breathing a flurocarbon compound that is more than just mildly toxic.

However, at this price, you could simply give away the skillets and keep the rest. You could easily pay $68 dollars for the stock pot alone.

Replace them with cast iron (search Kictchen and Housewares for cast iron skillets) and you will find many bargains on cast-iron cookware. (Check my other reviews for personal picks.)

These guys are just great.I've used mine for years now and they still look new.The only thing I don't like about them is that the 3/4 cup mark is missing, but other than that, I use them continuously. They wash beautifully in the dishwasher (even peanut butter comes out great), and they are just a dream to use.Great product, highly recommend.

The 12-1/2-inch spatula and 11-inch spoon in this matched sethave silicone heads that resist heat as high as 500 degrees F so theywon't melt in a hot sauce or if they touch a burner. They're also safewith nonstick cookware. The spatula has an exceptionally long head(5-1/4 inches) for quickly scraping bowls and folding ingredientstogether, while the tip flexes to conform to bowls' bottoms. Thespoon's 3-1/2-inch head also has a flexible tip. Both heads arematte-finish charcoal black, complementing the stylish, black, enamel-like grips, which have polished, 18/8 stainless-steelaccents and include hanging holes. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Bad Packaging
These spatulas are indispensible in the kitchen.I bought them mainly because they were a good deal, and I had seen them being used on a cooking show to scoop muffin batter into tins. The host made it look so easy, but really it's just a matter of working with the right tools - and these are the right tools.Nearly heatproof, with a whole line of matching, well-made kitchen accessories, these things are great!
I don't know why Kitchen Aid insists on packaging all of their kitchen tools with hard plastic bands, though.Opening the packaging can be fairly dangerous.I required a trip to the ER and four stitches in my hand when the scissors slipped while opening this very package.Be careful!;)

5-0 out of 5 stars A stirring tribute
After a mere week of use, our new set of silicon spatulas is already indispensable. They are not only very smart-looking, and modestly priced, but they handle beautifully and stand up to as much heat as you've got. They're just perfect for use with my Creuset pots, and do their duty in keeping the enamel smooth and unmarred.
    Highly recommended.

With big, polished heads and satin-finish handles, the six tools in thisset present a handsome, thoroughly contemporary kitchen bouquet standing intheir storage canister. At the same time, they're practical and durable. Made ofheavy-duty, 18/8 stainless steel, the set consists of a basting spoon, a slottedspoon, a pasta server, a slotted turner, a ladle, a fork for spearing slicedmeats or holding a roast or chicken firmly for carving, and the canister. Withthe exception of the 12-inch ladle, all tools are 12-1/2 inches long, havegently curved handles for ease of use, and include holes in their handles sothey can be hung instead of stored in the canister. The canister has asatin-finish to match the tools' handles, stands 6 inches high, and is 4 inchesin diameter. The stainless steel tools resist corrosion and are dishwasher-safe.--Fred Brack ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unrivaled
This is a GREAT product for the price.AND HERE'S A TIP.I followed Lodge's seasoning instructions to the letter, and in fact, did it three times.I was hoping to speed up the seasoning process. What I got was a medium brown, but still a (food) sticky surface.Quite by accident, I put it over the stove, turned both burners up to med-high (med-high+?) and moved the griddle around over the burners every 10 minutes or so.After about 1 1/2 hours I had a blackened seasoned surface that matched the Lodge preseasoned grill press that I also bought! Not quite as non-stick, but a few uses have fixed that! I'm not sure that Lodge would approve, and there will be some smoke, but it seems to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent investment that will last forever
I have had this grill for almost a year and remain very happy with it.I primarily purchased it for the grill side but the other side is very handy as well - for example for large amounts of pancakes.

Cast iron isn't no maintanence -especially at the beginning - but after time it will be a piece that is non-stick forever if you maintain its finish. It's essentally non-destructable and will be around forever if cared for.Use, seasoning and care directions come with the griddle.

I have cooked quite alot of things on the griddle and I find it best for things that arent going to let off an excessive amount of grease. There is a rim that runs along the bottom to catch the grease but I find it shallow for cooking things such as bacon. That said I have cooked many other kinds of meat successfully...

It fits over 2 of my burners easily on a standard sized stove.I have learned to turn the gas burners on first - before putting the griddle on.If I dont they light and sometimes the flame comes up over the side- only for a second but safety first.I can also set one burner lower than the other...one end to cook on and one end more of a *keep warm* side.I like that very much.

My only caution would be that you really do need to either keep a window open or have a nice strong exhaust fan.Mine isnt all that strong and I find without opening a window this produces more smoke that my fan can handle. But this is grilling and a grill pan would produce the same issue.

This is an item that will last forever and assuming you are willing to care for it, especially at first, in the correct manner you will love it.Considering that more and more information on non-stick coatings suggest they arent a healthy choice, cast iron is becomming more and more desirable.**of note- non-stick coatings can kill birds and if you have pet birds they are a distinct health risk.**

If you have the space to store this and are able to handle the weight of moving this to wash and put away this is an excellent and healthful life time purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing we've bought in years
That was my husband's comment this evening. We all love this thing. We use the griddle side for pancakes and eggs and french toast and plain ol' grilled cheese, although we've kind of given up on the "plain ol'" stuff. We use the grill side with a press for pannini and our new favorite kind of grilled cheese! We cook steaks and chicken and hot dogs and pork chops - you name it, we cook it.It never leaves the stove top, except to be cleaned (and to clean the admittedly greasy cooktop.)

One note that I haven't seen mentioned - we have a glass top stove.I was told (after I got and used this thing) that it couldn't be used with a glass top stove.Ummm, well, yeah, it can.A LOT!With great success.

One other note - we don't ever heat it higher than medium high and things cook extremely well. We had pork chops tonight and they were fantastic - just a nice cross-hatch of grill marks on the outside and perfectly cooked and juicy inside. That's when my husband made the comment in the title.

As for cleaning, we try to let excess stuff burn off for 15 minutes or so after we take the food off the grill. This works really well. Then I (let's be honest - the menfolk don't clean this puppy) put in across the sinks and scrub it with a stiff brush. No soap. Then I dry it and brush it with oil.If I really had to work hard at the cooked on food, I might even heat it up again to re-season it.

I grew up with cast iron skillets. My great-great-grandmother's cast iron skillet. It's passed down through our family to the daughter who has the most kids.(With only 1 child, I was never in the running!) That thing is so well seasoned you can cook almost anything in it without sticking. Oh, and it's 16" across. That's where that rule comes in about having the most kids!

I look forward to the day when my grill/griddle is that well seasoned.Considering how often we use it, it shouldn't take long! ... Read more

Sometimes overlooked as a valuable kitchen tool, tongs serve a variety of kitchen duties: tossing salads, flipping cutlets in a frying pan, snagging stubborn pickles from a jar, and more. These tongs are constructed of brushed stainless steel for easy cleaning and durability. A locking mechanism closes the tongs for easy storage, and provides a large loop for hanging. The Good Grips line features durable, nonslip flexible handles on every product. Ergonomically designed to fit the palm comfortably and softly, the pressure-absorbing processed rubber handle puts less tension on the hands, while providing an outstanding grip. Made from the same material as dishwasher gaskets are constructed of, the handles are slip-proof, wet or dry, as well as dishwasher-safe. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Got 'em. Love 'em.
Seriously, I got a set of these recently, and they have made all the difference in my chicken marsala. My old tongs are single-piece molded rubber, designed for use with non-stick cookware, and twist something awful when trying to handle any but the lightest ingredients. As someone else pointed out, these stainless steel tongs are no good for non-stick, but I have been getting away from non-stick anyway, ever since discovering Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized cookware.

The wide, flat head of these tongs allows breaded foods to be gently lifted from the cooking surface without tearing the breading, and the hinged metal arms prevent torque. The lock mechanism is great, and allows you to put the tongs down just about anywhere without having to deal with splayed-out arms while cooking. As far as cleanup, I've been scared to put mine in the dishwasher, but manual cleanup is very easy, and I have yet to see food stick to the business end of this great product.

4-0 out of 5 stars simply put...
Good tool. Well thought out lock.Keep away from your non-stick cookware though. There are siliconized or plastic coated tipped tongs out there for use there.Very nice, very handy.Get them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sturdy with a great locking mechanisim
These tongs a little more expensive, but they won't "twist" on you the way that cheaper tongs will when you try to pick up and flip a heavier item. The great locking mechanisim, which means never having to deal with sliding rings again, is worth the price of admission.I've used these tongs (and their longer 16" cousins) for everything, including grill duty, for about 3 years and they're just as good as new. ... For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the Casual Cook
I never thought I'd ever use something like this. It just seemed, well, too fussy! However after watching Rachael Ray use one over and over on her show, I thought I'd give it a try. The price was definitely right!I must say, I don't know how I ever got along without it.It's perfect for grating chocolate and hard cheeses, and absolutely essential for zesting lemons and limes (what a difference fresh zest makes in a recipe!) without getting ANY of the bitter pith.I'm getting one for my mom and my best friend...I just love this kitchen tool!Don't think you have to be a gourmet to have use for this. Even the casual cook will find it indispensable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it for the money
These knives are attractive and very sharp for how cheap they are.Just to quell some confusion, there are only 5 knives, the last 2 "pieces" are the knife block and sharpener.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sleek expensive looking set for cheap!
It's a very nice looking set, looks like its worth a hundred or so and for only $15 (the price I paid when it was on sale) it's a definite good buy. However, the quality itself isn't that great, yes the blades are stainless steel and they cut very well but the handle is made out of plastic and I wonder when they will break or chip and become discolored therefore rendering the rest of the set useless. Anyway, its just there for 'show' and not used as my main knife set and for its price its worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter set!
If you have roommates, but also cook, you know the stress of having "nice" equipment. These knives are perfect for such a situation! While very inexpensive, they are are of good quality, and it is a complete set. I'm very impressed with their weight and strength. They are also pretty stylish - impress your friends!
Some complained that they are not sharp out of the box.. but that's why they come with a sharpener! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This sturdy butcher-block board is made from select, non-endangered, self-sustaining American hardwood. Made by Catskill Craftsmen, of New York, this board has smoothly rounded edges and a channel along the edge that's deep enough to hold any juices released during cutting. The wood won't splinter or dull knives. Take good care of the wood by hand washing and occasionally coating with butcher-block oil. --Dale Steinke ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy board...not smooth!
I was searching for a cutting board in a good size that comes with a groove, came across this and according to the reviews, everything seems positive. Boy, was I disappointed!

I've carefully oiled the board with mineral oil almost everyday for the first week I bought the board, and wash it with mild soap and water as instructed. However, there seems to be fuzz (or rather splinters!) on both surfaces of the board. I tried to oil the board again, but it still seems dry (though it has never been used). I couldn't risk having my food stuck with splinters from the board, and therefore had never gotten around to use it. I'd rather go with a Henckels board anytime.

A waste of money, would not recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad Cutting Board
Board is indeed a quality board, but with a name like Craftsmen, I had expected a bit higher quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very beautiful board
I love this board. The board I received has a beautiful grain and great craftsmanship. The size is perfect for me - it's long and wide enough for all my uses, including dicing long carrots. The groove is a nice feature, and it's nice to have a reversible board - I usually cut bread on the non-grooved side. The board is thick enough so it's sturdy, but not so thick that it's too heavy.

Another use of the groove - fat carrots that won't fit in the juicer have to be cut the long way - they fit nicely in the groove and don't roll.

Not too much to say about a cutting board, but I sure love this one, and the price is nice, too. ... Read more

The pre-wet feature of Hamilton Beach's FlavorPlus coffeemakergoes one step better on the basic concept of coffee brewing. Beforestraining coffee into the carafe, the pre-wet cycle fully saturatesgrounds, so the made coffee has a rich, maximum flavor. Better yet, because the coffeemaker is programmable, you can set it so you don'teven notice the extra minute or two of brewing time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coffee maker
I bought this for my mom after reading all the excellent reviews here. I personally don't like coffee but I've been told that the coffee made by this machine is excellent. One thing I've noticed is she has to use fewer grounds than she used to because this coffee maker extracts every bit of flavor out of the coffee grounds. The pause'n'serve feature is nice but I wonder if it affects the taste of the coffee that's left in the pot. I've noticed that the first bit of coffee that drips through, when using the flavor plus feature, is very dark. The last couple cups that drip through however are much weaker looking. If the flavor plus feature is off the first bit of coffee to drip through looks weak but the next few cups look strong and the remaining couple cups look weak again. I should point out that she only uses half of the amount of coffee recommended for each cup. If you use the recommended amount of coffee you may not notice this difference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great features, good price. It didn't last.
I bought this item based on some of the reviews here, and I've had it about a year.I've was very pleased with the features and the price, but yesterday it died.It now stays on whenever it's plugged in.The on/off button doesn't affect this at all.Plug it in and the base gets hot and it wants to brew coffee.I am disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Coffee and Value - But Replacement Carafes...?
I bought this coffeemaker in December 2003, and it has been reliable, easy to use and, most importantly, makes an EXCELLENT cup of coffee. The "FlavorPlus" pre-wet cycle in combination with the use of cone filters is definitely a winning combination. I highly recommend this unit for robust-flavored coffee and value.

My only trouble is that a hairline crack developed in the carafe - which was likely my own fault. I can't seem to find a replacement carafe for sale anywhere! Knowing I'd be without the carafe before long (eventually the crack would split) I purchased a reconditioned Cuisinart unit from Amazon. The flavor of the coffee was hideous. Weak and bitter. What a huge disappointment from a supposedly "premium" brand.

Sadly, I threw out the box to the Cuisinart unit, so I can't return it - or even give it away. The twice-used Cuisinart now sits in the basement - where it belongs. No coffee, whether Folgers or Starbucks deserves the injustice the Cuisinart unit would impose upon it.

So... what did I do? I purchased another Hamilton Beach 43421 just last week!!

Great job on design, Hamilton Beach... But in the future, could you please sell a replacement carafe SOMEWHERE? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT made in USA as Tech Data says
I'm not happy. The Amazon "Technical Data" section currently states "Country of manufacture: USA" but on the box it says "Made in China"! I go out of my way to purchase items that are made in the USA and to avoid things that are made in China. It is important to me.It's hard enough to find things (in many categories) that are are not made in China.I definitely don't appreciate being misled.Come on Amazon!
    -----------------------
Now ... regarding the mixer itself ... we just received it and have only used it once so it's a bit early to give it a meaningful rating. However, we definitely noticed two points that many others have mentioned. It is very quiet but it is not as fast as many other mixers. My wife doesn't seem too concerned about the speed so I guess it's not a major issue but definitely noticable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my gosh!
This is the best hand mixer EVER! After 25 years with an old GE hand mixer that finally went, I picked up a Hamilton Beach hand mixer because I was in a baking bind. It was one of the worst purchases I ever made -- chasing batter around the bowl until it finally mixed. Then I ordered the KitchenAid mixer on the recommendation of Cooks Illustrated and let me tell you, it is a PLEASURE to use!! I just made one of my standard recipes and I never had to a) use a speed higher than #1, b) chase batter around the bowl, or c) mix anything by hand because it was too heavy for the mixer! All I can say is WOW! Get this hand mixer if you're in the market for one. ... Read more

I was a little worried after reading all the mixed reviews. Now that I have used it 2x a day for the past month, I think this kettle is well worth the 7 dollars I paid. A lot of reviewers say that the whistle part doesn't work. I noticed the same thing when I put the kettle on a lower power burner and the water would boil but no whistle. However, the whistle has never failed when I put it on the larger burners with higher heat. Yes, the handle part gets a little hot, but I am okay with it.

I recently came in a time machine from the year 1826. There I was searching this thing called th'interrrnet and low and behold, there was my kettle from my previous life!!!

I did some research and discovered that kettles (we actually called them 'The Pot' back in 1800's) in this present day of 2005 actually have slots in the back that connect to a long wire wrapped in 'plastic'that have a thing on the end called a 'plug' which goes into the wall and you get an 'electric' current. This powers the kettle, thus heating the water.

I was so happy to find one like they have back in my day. Its nice to see some companies dont go with the technology and force their consumers to also buy a stove to heat their water on.

This deep fryer handles every food from french fries to doughnuts while eliminating the mess that comes with stovetop frying. Constructed of heavy-duty stainless steel, the fryer has an extra-large 5-liter capacity so it can handle family-sized portions of fried chicken or falafel. A power switch and a thermostat that goes up to 375 degrees F are the only controls on the unit, making it simple to master. The professional 1,700-watt stainless-steel heating element is immersed in the oil so it can maintain high temperatures when food is placed into the fryer. The fryer’s thermostat coil is also immersed in oil so reducing the heat on the fryer’s thermostat produces an instant drop in the oil’s temperature. These dual thermostats make frying faster and safer since temperature controls are more reliable.

Other perks on this deep fryer include a lid with a viewing window to watch your food cook, a filter that absorbs oil and prevents it from splattering all over the kitchen, and a cord storage compartment for the detachable power cord. For added convenience, the filter, oil container, and frying basket with handle can all be cleaned in the dishwasher. 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect size and a great machine for a family of four
I am using it for around 2 months andI am happy with its performance. I uses it for Indian food like dough, chilli/onion,garlic paste, crushing the spinach, curliflower, coconut, carrots , salad etc

    Pros:
    It plastic is sturdy.
    It is easy to clean.
    Its sound level is normal.

    Cons
The slicer comes with it is little thin. They sells 1/4 inch slicer seperately (in $20)
It is heavy, It sticks with counter so well you need to apply lot of power to move it.
It is not worth to take one star out for these.

Make sure you will add water gradually until dough stops sticking the walls and then let it run for 30 seconds. It will stick all to the walls if more water is added at this stage. Also don't try to add more flour to compansate more water, it will make a big mess.

2-0 out of 5 stars This "classic" isn't worth it
No doubt, you might be intrigued by the relative savings offered on this model compared to other processors - including the more modern-looking Cuisinarts. Well, there is, as they say, a reason for everything.

I have used both a small older Mini-Prep as well as the DLC-2007 (the futuristic one). Both were awesome - they blended thoroughly and RARELY leaked (only when it was my fault and I filled the suckers full of liquid.

Anyhow, they passed the "how much do I get for my money" test with flying colors. This machine does not.

Each time I have used this thing - be it for cooked vegetables, salsa or pesto, the freaker leaked from the well. Unlike the other two Cuisinarts I mentioned - which were the older sister and the same-age sister, respectively, to this model - this one has a blade that fits LOOSELY on its inner assembly. Thus, whatever you are blending works its way up right out of the cylinder and into the well, from which it drips everywhere. The counter, the machine, the bowl.

I mean it - do not buy this model. It really sucks. You may save money, but you won't save time or headaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product, easy to clean,
Product is easy to clean. This is the first food processor I have owned so I do not have much to compare it to.My only complaint is that when I made a soup that needed to be pureed, the soup went everywhere. The food processor leaked from the bottom before even turning on the machine.I have made a variety of other dishes in this with no problem such as hummus, salsa, etc. ... Editorial Review

Much smaller than your traditional blender, this handheld stick blender is compact and easy to store in a small kitchen. Additionally, it saves you the time and effort of cleaning up a blender pitcher as the Quick Prep lets you blend right in your soup pot, mixing bowl, or glass. The powerful motor has two speeds for the best blending results: low is perfect for milk shakes, pancake batter, dips, and dressings, while high works better for baby food, soups, and whipped cream. An ergonomically designed handle provides a comfortable hold for long blending jobs and the brushed chrome finish gives the blender a sleek look for a contemporary kitchen. After use, the blade end easily rinses and wipes clean and the lengthy 5-foot cord wraps around the unit for storage. The Quick Prep comes with a 2-cup plastic mixing container and a recipe booklet and is covered by a limited 18-month warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Warranty service costs $5 + shipping & insurance
Warranty repair will cost you shipping and insurance PLUS a $5 "shipping and handling" fee unless you live in California, where enlightened legislation prevents this sort of costly "warranty" malarkey that's tantamount to no warranty at all. Cuisinart's CSB-77 hand blender, a fancier single-speed 200-watt model with an all-stainless-steel body, requires a $10 fee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchase a super hand blender!!
Amazon sells the two best (I know that is gramatically incorrect since there can be only 1 'best'.).

    Cuisinart:
    1) $15 less, even taking into account the $5 KitchenAid rebate.
    2) Nylon guard which means the preparer may use right in the cooking vessel.
    3) Longer warranty (18 mos. versus 12 mos. KitchenAid).

    KitchenAid:
    1) Multi-speed (versus 2-speed for the Cuisinart).
    2) Mixing attachment is removable which means easier storage.
    3) Choice of colors (for those who care).

In using the Cuisinart for the first time, I made a wonderful discovery.Save that old carafe. For purees of large quantities of Italian tomatos, it is, in combination with this wonderful Cuisinart Quick Prep Hand Blender, a wonderful substitute for the 'food mill' suggested in my pasta cookbook (and much more stable than the hard plastic cup included with the blender). Both will clean up like a dream and the Pyrex pot has a further advantage of a pouring spout. From sauce pot to carafe to blending to container to fridge (including cleanup of all) took only about ten minutes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a handy gadget
Emeril Lagasse calls these "boat motors." Of course he probably uses the professional Waring version that costs over $100. I find this much less expensive model to be quite well built with a powerful motor (it actually pulls itself down into the sauce). Clean up is simple enough- simply run it in a bowl of hot soapy water. I recommend it. ... Read more
