4-0 out of 5 stars Captivating historical tale
At the end of this book, Llewelyn includes a brief bibliography-- complete with ancient sources as well as contemporary accounts-- and the attention to detail shows in the book.

It's really a treat to read a book about Druids that lacks the new-agey stonehenge-reverent "true religion" tone-- these Druids are the healers/holy people of the Celts, but they are also just people, they marry, have children, etc. They do work magic but it's more to do with perception than transformation.

The story follows young Ainvar from his intrusion into a sacrifice (which is also not what it seems-- the human sacrifices come willingly, and drink a tonic the night before, so that the knife is just a ritual) to bring spring on-- his adoption by the aging chief Druid, his "man-making" in which he meets his soul-friend, Rix-- Vercengetorix-- and ultimately his involvement in the dream of forming a great alliance among the Celtic tribes to resist the incursion of Caesar.

If you've ever read or even just had any knowledge of "All Gaul was divided in three parts" you probably know this isn't going to be a huge success for the Gauls.Still, you can't help hoping...

Ainvar is resourceful and likable. At times the elegaic tone for the Celts ("we were a people who sang") is a bit twee, and it's true the Romans are presented as out and out villains which oversimplifies the story. There are also a few loose ends-- a kidnapped daughter's fate and the betrayal by a friend.

But on the whole this is an engrossing story with a sense of historical accuracy, and a must read for anyone interested in Celts and ancient Rome.Llewelyn's prose is a treat and she writes engaging characters throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its a great book!!!
Druids is an exiting book with much action and fantasy. Once you start reading, it brings you to medieval Europe with the ancient celtic Druids, and the adventure to follow. If you like books about druids, celtic myth or medieval lore, you will love this book. Morgan Llywelyn definitely knows how to intrige readers with amazing battles and magic. The book is aimed at youths and young adults but, everyone will enjoy this. If you want an adventurous and exiting read, you want this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "For the Druids. You Know Who You Are."
Seeing as the Celts didn't believe in writing anything down, it's really hard to know exactly what it was like to be a member of their civilization.Llywelyn's vision of a society living in harmony with nature isn't so much New Agey as it is an intelligently woven tapestry composed of our best guesses about this once-prosperous people.Despite it being historical fantasy, it's still one of the best texts I've ever read on the subject of the druids.

The characters are extremely likeable, and the story is infused with the very magic that the main character/narrator weilds. It's also got a fair amount of excellent spiritual and practical wisdom as well as a fair amount of accurate historical data. It's a book that you regret finishing.

To me, this book is special in many ways.I've read it many times, and it never fails to instill in me a sense of awe at Morgan Llwelyn's powers as a writer and sadness that the Gods of Corruption and Currency triumphed over the druids and their Celtic civilization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ROYAL...TALE...OF...BEAUTY...TRUTH...AND..TRIUMPH!
If one book I have read comes close to being "perfect", it is
"Behold Your Queen"!The biblical characters come alive, as real people, the "tour" of ancient Persia is vivid, and the story -- (straight out of the Bible....yet anything but dry
and stodgy...in fact, it may send you TO the Bible to read
the original!) -- exciting, romantic, scary, and in the end,
triumphant!

Courage and moral values are at the core of this book -- but
they are not taught by rote here.REASONS for these things
are given.Also -- there's a lovely lesson in "dating" --
how to get a guy interested in you.Simply -- be interested
in him!The love story between Ahasures and Esther is that
of two young people who find each other in the midst of lone-
liness, (each is an orphan), and splendour....yet it is the
splendour of their love that shines through.

Esther's love is tested when it is revealed to her that the
Prime Minister, (Haman), plans to have all people belonging
to one race in the Persian Empire killed. These people are
the hereditary enemies of Haman's people -- the Amalakites.
Unknown to Haman, the new Queen Esther is one of those
people -- the Jews -- whom Haman would have destroyed.Haman
does not know this, (initially), because Esther was told by
her Uncle Mordechai, (who brought her up), to keep her
origins a secret.(This is another lesson of this book --
though told as children we must always tell the truth, the
maturing person realizes that some things -- things that
would hurt others, or even one's self -- need not be told
...at least at first) How Esther decides that she must
risk her life so that she -- and all other Jews in the
Persian empire -- can at least defend themselves...is a
lesson in courage for all time. She not only risks her
life...but also his love, which she has found so precious...

True, there are some non-politically correct parts of this
book.Yet they are minor....and could easily be remedied.
For instance, at the beginning of the book, Queen Vashti
is banished because she refuses to appear at a banquet
clad only in her royal crown, at the behest of drunken
guests.(This is why a beauty-contest is later held
throughout the empire to choose a new queen.)The message
here might be, "Obey your husband or else" -- and the
danger of wives, following Vashti's lead, and disobeying their
husbands, is indeed what Ahasures's counsellors warn against.
However....one of them saying, "...And even wherein a wife and
husband act as one, lovingly consulting each other, as did
your royal parents, there will be strife...for the wife will see she need not even consult her husband any longer -- and
one will again become two!" -- could now be added. Also --
(to please traditionalists, (boo!) -- who believe that Ahasures was an older man, and that Esther -- true to her faith -- did not really love him, another minor change could be made.In fact, when I told a relative of mine about this book, mentioning that in it, Ahasures and Esther fell in love in it, he said, "Oh -- that ruins the whole story!" -- oh, if only I had had the book there for him to read!)So, to please these tradtionalists, Ahasures could stay in love with her, remain
young and handsomne, (sigh!), and Esther could remain deeply
in love with him, (double sigh!!)But -- to make tradition-
alists happy, Ahasures could also be shown to take some
interest in Judaism, (which -- before Christianity -- was, (in my own estimation) the most moral, and perhaps the only moral religion in existance. (Later on, it was joined by Christianity and Islam, two other highly moral, modern religions, of course). Ahasures could even be shown to be toying with the idea of conversion,and/or gaining more and more respect for Judaism even if he doesn't convert. This would please the traditionalists no end, and so they would be, (at least a little bit!) in favour of the deep romance that is gives this wonderful book so much of its essence, charm, amd power!Ahasure's growing interest in Judaism could be added after Haman's demise, towards the end
of the story. It would fit beautifully there, as Ahasure's
coming defeat, at the hands of the Greeks, (with their new idea
of "democracy") could also account for this: the shadow of defeat often leads to intellectual curiousity and growth....
In fact, in another telling of this story, "Esther", by Nathanial Weintrab, just this coming defeat at Greek hands is touched upon, and added. These very, very slight changes changes could be added, to make the book more viable
for today's audience, and added to keep traditionalists
happy, too.

Added to what? To a NEW PRINTING OF THIS BOOK!And,
as well, perhaps a MOVIE VERSION???? This book cries out
for both....for courage, tolerance, moral values and love, have no barriers of place, or people.BEHOLD YOUR QUEEN! is a
story for all time -- and, perhaps, especially for our own time,
when courage, tolerance, moral values, and love, often seem
at various times, to be derided as old-fashioned and unnecessary.
The story of Esther is a great story in all respects, and never was it better told than here. Our post-911 world NEEDS a
movie of BEHOLD YOUR QUEEN! -- or at the very least, a reprinting of this book.Who knows -- even Osama Bin Laden could learn a thing or two from it?I hope so ...and why not?
(STEVEN SPEILBERG....PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!!!!!I know I am not
the only person who would love for these things to happen!)

Behold!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting story- will be with me always!
Like other reviewers, I read this as a young person at about age 8 or 9. I have re-read it many, many times since.
It was also my first exposure to the Middle East, and ancient culture.
It's the story of Esther, from her young maidenhood to her rise as Queen of Persia.
Beginning with her as an innocent girl brought up with strong morals and respect for others, we follow her as she is selected to be taken to the King of Persia as a prospective wife. Throughout her journey from naive youngster to cosmopolitan sophisticate, she never loses the values she was raised with.
The characters come alive, and the scene descriptions are vivid- you will feel like you're there!
The two best things about this book (IMO), are the enchanting descriptions of Ancient Persia, and the emphasis on being true to yourself above all else.
Esther showed us that loving yourself and being courageous enough to stick to your principles makes you more beautiful and valuable than any superficial, cosmetic facade ever could. This book makes doing the right thing seem much more attractive than having power and fortune.
I was lucky enough to find 2 hardcover copies at a library auction, and they are keepsakes I will pass on to future generations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Behold Your Queen! - A Young Woman's Passage to Adulthood
Behold Your Queen! is a wonderful retelling of the Book of Esther.Malvern's writing incorporates credible motivations into the story, and adds a rich wealth of detail that make the story come alive with a vivid vitality.I first read this story when I was 8, and did not stop reading it until the (misguided) library withdrew the book from its shelves. If I could find a copy it would be on my shelf today, and eagerly reread.I would love to share this book with a new generation. As a teacher, I know this book has much to offer to young women facing difficult decisions about family, loyalty, honor, faith, personal safety, and love.Hadassah faces difficult choices in dangerous times, and Malvern's tale gives the reader the opportunity to share in the anguish and fear in Hadassah's choice, as well as in her final triumph and affermation.PLEASE REPRINT THIS BOOK!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Alchemical Novel
When I got this book and I began reading it - I couldn't put it down. The book is a fictional alchemical novel and covers the span of four lifetimes of an individual from the point he became curious about the alchemy and the mess he made out of his zeal for the possession of the philosopher's stone before he was mentally, emotionally and spiritually ready to have it, through karmic retributions (consequences) of his errors and the side-effects of going through few lifetimes fully remembering his past deeds and mis-deeds - and all the way to his ultimate spiritual attainment - the rightful possession of the philosopher's stone, all the lessons learned and inner refinements accomplished.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Red Lemon
Many people that I know have heartily recommended this novel. Honestly, I don't understand why they embraced it so lovingly. I found this book to be condescending and maleficent. It refers to real alchemists in name only, projecting an aura on them that sometimes borders on the ridiculous, as in the caliper of man that Becher was, or the origins of the Comte de St. Germaine. It thoroughly misinforms as well; the homonculus is not a extradimensional entity bent on the overthrow of God, for example. To find out what the homonculus really is, study Paracelsus. To learn more about Hermetic thought, read Dom Pernety, Flamel or Basil Valentine. It is also a violent and depressing book, and I don't really enjoy violence or depression, two emotions that I had in spades after finishing the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classic
This is a book that I read once in about every five years.
There is so much to learn from this book!

I hope you will read it and learn a lot from it too! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This adaptation of Marion Zimmer Bradley's sprawling and perennially popular book, whose retelling of the Arthurian legends focused on the role of powerful females, compresses a wealth of mysticism, family intrigue, and bloody swordplay into three hours. While the plot can meander slowly and can sometimes seem, well, mystifying, the work of three notable actresses holds the production together, and the numerous complications do eventually get resolved. As Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, Anjelica Huston endeavors to perpetuate the old religion as pagan Britain comes into contact with Christianity. The scheming Morgause, played to evil perfection by Joan Allen, conspires to her own ends. And Avalon priestess Morgaine, played by Julianna Margulies, travels the heroine's journey, overcoming tragedies, injustice, and all manner of obstacles in her duty to both "the goddess" and her younger brother, King Arthur. Although the action lags at times, the production is quite lavish for a made-for-television feature and the film is ultimately entertaining. --Robert J. McNamara ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Female version of Excaliber!
Saw it on TNT awhile back. It's a little slower on the action, but good story telling. If you saw it you know what I mean. It's worth getting if you like the folklore.

4-0 out of 5 stars SURPRISINGLY
I actually thought that this was a good movie. Especially a movie from a T.V. special. My family and I watch any chance we get.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor and pitiful attempt at the real thing
This movie is just a poor representation of the marvelous tales and legends of King Arthur. Not just that, but Quinevere was turned into nothing more than a woman with very few morals. Orgy's run amuck throughout this movie, actually, there's very little here except for the orgy's on the Midsummer night party where especially King Arthur decides he wants Quinevere to sleep with him and Lancelot at the same time. Just because he was afraid it was his fault that the Queen couldn't have children.

So. I wouldn't say having the Queen sleep with your best Knight was the way to go. Especially as Quinevere was allegedly supposed to have been burned at the stake for the accusations thrown at her for sleeping with Lancelot. Its horrible the way history will be distorted all for hearthrobs.

I could go on and on, but I think its safe to say I've said enough as far as my opinion on this movie goes.

Time spent here could be better invested elsewhere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella it ain't
Watch this when....you need to rent a video for a drippy teen-aged girl.

Drew Barrymore, in a not particularly attractive mode, plays Cinderella as a regular gal-next-door in medieval England.Well, MAYBE.Actually, it's set in France, but they all wander around with terrible fake Brit accents. There's no explanation for this. There is also:No wit, no sparkle, no songs. AND the story has been messed with. Not only is there no magic, but her fairy godmother is....Leonardo Da Vinci??? (And even HE is not interesting -- how sad is THAT??)There is some attempt at portraying Cinderella as a feminist. The "portrayal" is an embarrassment to feminists everywhere, just as Barrymore is an embarrassment to actors.Drew's acting is rote - she appears to be reciting for a high-school audition. Okay, frankly, her acting is awful, awful, awful. For the life of me, I don't know why this did so well in the theaters.Must have been the teen-aged girls. It is watchable, but with a lot of eye-rolling.Or perhaps a stiff shot of vodka, since the only way this film could be called palatable is if you had a few under your belt.

In English (FAKE English!), released in 1998 (if only they had released us from having to experience this film).Principal Cast (weep for them):Drew Barrymore (actress in training, and an awful one at that), Angelica Huston (perhaps she thought there were no more good roles for older women?), Dougray Scott (even three first names won't confuse the Actors Guild enough to prevent your receiving credit for this film, Dougray - nice try, though), Patrick Godfrey, Megan Dodds, Melanie Lynskey, Timothy West (go west, young man, escape this film), Judy Parfitt (her agent should have fits for casting her in this waste of filmstock), Jeroen Krabbe (and who can blame him), Lee Ingleby, Kate Lansbury (bury this on your resume, honey, and take comfort in the fact that it will be forgotten soon enough), Matyelok Gibbs, Walter Sparrow, Jeanne Moreau (o how the mighty have fallen), Anna Maguire, and a host of other individuals whom I will spare association with this so-called "film."

5-0 out of 5 stars A realistic version of the timeless fairy tale
In this more realistic version of Cinderella, Drew Barrymore plays Gabrielle, a pretty farm girl who's strength and courage(not prince charming) save her from a bleak future. In order to save one of the house servants, Gabrielle passes herself off as a courtier and confronts one of the King's men.Amidst this confrontation, Prince Henry shows up and is impressed by Gabrielle's guts, intelligence, and beauty.Smitten by the Prince herself, Gabrielle lies to him about who she really is.
But Gabrielle's stepmother (Angelica Huston) is determined to have the prince marry one of her daughters and she'll do whatever it takes to get Gabrielle out of the way.Highly recommended for its romance, humor, and suspense.

5-0 out of 5 stars great family viewing
Drew Barrymore has this charm about her on screen, whether it's in ET as a pretty little girl, or as a beautiful young woman in this Cinderella story that will captivate your heart and senses. This is fairytale but believable because human nature is always the same whether it's fantasy or reality; and it's romantic but very tasteful. And I'm sure many will be pleased with the happy ending :)

Editorial Review

Fans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening.--Bill Forman ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I Gave My Love A Cherry.
This weepy balladeer fits nicely between fellow Hades dwellers Ben Harper and John Meyer, and, like his ilk, has nothing to offer to anyone who possesses a brain larger than a pea.

"Brushfire Fairytales" is exactly the kind of krap you're bound to find playing at the local coffee house during those torrid poetry reading nights or Saturday nights at Borders.

It's precisely the kind of CD that's bound to get you laid, but are you really willing to sell your soul for the beav?

2-0 out of 5 stars Uninspiring and flat
My introduction to Jack Johnson was through his album "In Between Dreams". I thought that one was a three-star production, but I told myself I would dig back into his catalog, to find out what the deal was with him. After I listened through "Brushfire Fairytales", and only having found "Flake" to be remotely interesting (largely thanks to the invited guests on it, Ben Harper on slide guitar, and Tommy Jordan on steel drums), I still can't say I know the answer.

I give this album two stars (I guess I could go as high as three typically, but I did find his 2005 production slightly more interesting) because I didn't find to be the least enticing or appealing. His sound attempts to fill a gap somewhere Dave Matthews and Jimmy Buffett, and doesn't quite accomplish much in the process, with an end result that is as uninspiring as it is flat. As much as I don't typically bash musical productions, I can't say much in favor of Jack Johnson's "Brushfire Fairytales". If you are looking for good singer/songwriters, I recommend you listen to Josh Rouse, Joseph Arthur and Paul Brill, for starters.

Editorial Review

Jack Johnson has found himself a groove. Indeed, the Hawaiian surfing champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his sophomore release. Fans of Brushfire Fairytales should be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These," the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy." On the splendid "Taylor," Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan. And "By The Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful. -- Bill Holdship ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Classic
A great follow up album with plenty of the same great Jack Johnson sound. More of the simple acoustic jamming that is perfect for driving with the windows down. Some classic tunes here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breezy...
Jack Johnson's CDs are not available in my country, but after I heard his latest single 'Sitting,Waiting,Wishing' on the radio I immediately fall in love with his music! ^^ So I borrowed 'On and On' from my friend and since then it's been playing in my cd player every single day.. I just lOVE it! Anywayz, here's my track-by-track review:

1. Times Like These -- it's a great opening track, very mellow.. Kinda sets the tune for the whole album.. 4/5
2. The Horizon Has Been Defeated-- this one kinda sounds like reggae music but it's still fun.. 3.5/5
3. Traffic In The Sky -- one of the best songs.. it's been stuck in my head for quite a while now. =P really laid-back n mellow.. love it! ^^ 5/5
4. Taylor -- definitely the best song in this album! a really catchy song with great lyrics & it's really fun to listen to.. 5/5
5. Gone -- deep lyrics.. really slow n sounds kinda sad. 4.5/5
6. Cupid -- short & sweet! 4/5
7. Wasting Time -- actually b4 i got this cd, this is the 1st song off the album that i downloaded from the net and it's awesome! very laid-back & makes me wanna sing-along to d song.. 5/5
8. Holes To Heaven -- not bad, but it's so-so for me.. 3/5
9. Dreams Be Dreams -- inspiring lyrics,beautiful song.. 4/5
10. Tomorrow Morning -- one of the best songs.. great intro, very relaxing and there's lots of luv in it! =P 5/5
11. Fall Line -- a nice short song.. 3.5/5
12. Cookie Jar -- haunting melody, dark lyrics about d bad effects of TV.. 4/5
13. Rodeo Clowns -- awesome rhythm n kinda upbeat.. but i've heardanother version of the song by Donavon in a surfing DVD and imo it's better coz it's faster & more upbeat.. 4.5/5
14. Cocoon -- one of d best.. really sad, deep lyrics, beautiful melody.. what else can u ask for? 5/5
15. Mediocre Bad Guys -- my least fave track on the album.. gets a little annoying after a while.. mediocre.. 3/5
16. Symbol In My Driveway -- it's an awesome track to end the album! i like the waves' sound in the background.. makes me feel like i'm at the beach.. 5/5

You should really pay attention to the lyrics coz it has some stories n philosophy in it.. The depth of the lyrics r really refreshing for this kind of music coz we'll get bored easily if the lyrics suck..

Overall, this is a MUST HAVE CD for anyone who likes accoustic,laid-back music and even better for the fans of surfing culture.. Highly recommended! ^__^V

5-0 out of 5 stars The next Ben Harper.
Cross John Mayer with a Hawaiian surf champion, mix in a little Marcy Playground, and an occasional reggae rhythm, and you get Jack Johnson.

He plays with a straight forward approach -- singer/songwriter/guitarist -- thathas a sparse, quiet, understated elegance. The disc has a soulful, funky groove not usually heard from in folk rock artists.

Johnson apparently has never heard of the sophmore slump: This charming, must hear album every bit as good as his debut effort, Brushfire Fairytales. Solid from start to finish.

Simply one of the best new artists to arrive in some time. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad while it lasted.
The camera started showing problems two weeks into use. The winding mechanism would not rewind 36 exp rolls, then 24 exp rolls, then it wouldn't wind the film past the 4th or 5th exp on a fresh roll, and at the end, it wouldn't even spool up a fresh roll.

It took pretty good pictures, I would say, but I'm not experienced at judging pictures. They were in focus and the exposure times got the balance between light and dark right. The film winding mechanism was a little loud for my taste.

On the up side, because of its almost entirely plastic construction (I think the lens mount is plastic as well) the camera was light and easy to carry. On the down side, plastic obviously breaks quicker than metal. The auto-focus was pretty quick and if you understood where to point the lens, it was also correct.

Editorial Review

Even before their second fling with the pop mainstream, Aerosmith were one of Top 40's favorite hard-rock bands, so ubiquitous--and so funky--that Run-D.M.C. were vociferous fans. Their '70s output included at least three classic albums (Aerosmith, Toys in the Attic, and Rocks). This disc collects unstoppable singles into a horny, howling little piece of archaeology that makes even weak links like "Kings and Queens" sound great. And the truly great stuff here--"Sweet Emotion," "Last Child," "Dream On"--runs the gamut of style and feeling from swaggering freak-flag-flying to power-ballad roots that display a genuine ache. Your Aerosmith collection shouldn't end here, but this red-and-white bomb is a great place to start. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars in a SINGLE word.
ok people, the reason for the edited versions of "same old song and dance", "sweet emotions" and "kings and queens" is BECAUSE, they were released as SINGLES. why they (columbia) didn't use the album versions i don't know? but thse are the single versions. so now you know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits : 1973-1980
This is a brilliant compilation spanning the first 7 years of Aerosmith's career. There's only ten tracks, but you could play this CD all the way through with ease. Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Aerosmith Anthology
GREATEST HITS is an exceptional Aerosmith collection. It shows how the band developed from its first album through such hits as "Sweet Emotion" and "Last Child", to the end of their first golden era. The latter phase is, sadly, documented by a sacrilegious version of the Shangri-las' "Remember (Walking In The Sand)", but the rest of the songs show that, even in 1978, the group looked as if it could go on forever. ... Editorial Review

While not quite as exemplary of the Boston quintet's '70s sound as Toys in the Attic or Rocks, Get Your Wings was impressive both in terms of its material and its measurable improvement over Aerosmith's debut. From the R&B inflected "Same Old Song and Dance" to the power-rock "Woman of the World" to the rollicking cover of "Train Kept a Rollin'," Wings showed the band solidifying their sound and really taking flight for the first time. --Genevieve Williams ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm going as far as to say that this is their best album
I have been an Aerosmith fan since I was a small kid. And back in they day, I've had my favourite albums. First it was "Pump," then it was "Toys In The Attic," then "Rocks." But now, having heard every album, I can confidently say that "Get Your Wings" is the best. All tracks are great rockers, with some elements progression thrown in, and can be considered the most energetic dirty rockers ever. Track highlights include a Yardbird cover in "Train Kept Arollin," fantastic atmospheric rollicker "Spaced," autobiographical exploitation in "Same old Song and Dance," and quite possibly the band's best song, an extended ballad called "Seasons of Whither." Highly recommended. Highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAME SEASON AND PANDORA
One of their greatest albums of all time next to Toys in the Attic. My faves are Same Old Song and Dance, and Seasons of Wither. Pandora's Box is also good but not a classic! The others
other than those 3 dont match anything. Just buy the CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aerosmith's Most Underrated Album
During "Get Your Wings," Aerosmith threw out most of their Rolling Stones sound heard on their debut. Now they are closer to a heavy metal band (at least what was considered heavy metal at the time), their guitars are heavier, and Steven Tyler sings with his real voice instead of the weak one that occupied most of their debut album. You can find all sorts of Aerosmith classics on here; including "Same Old Song and Dance," "Lord of the Thighs" (which sounds somewhat similar to "Back in the Saddle"), and the heavy power ballad "Seasons of Whither." Their cover of the Yardbirds' "Train Kept A Rollin'" became a concert staple. For some reason they tried to make this sound like a live album so there are cheers sometimes in between songs. The album isn't perfect, but it is easily one of Aerosmith's top ten albums. In a Rolling Stone review for this album, the reviewer said that Steven Tyler's voice would never be able to carry a song the way the Mick Jaggers could; it's humorous how wrong he was. ... Editorial Review

Building on the success of the more pop-oriented Permanent Vacation, this 1989 release banished any doubts that Aerosmith's unlikely late-'80s comeback was a fluke of nature--or merely the product of shrewd record company calculations. That Aerosmith could produce a pair of albums to rival Toys in the Attic and Rocks after a decade-and-change of decay and despair seemed all but unnatural. While Vacation's other key players (producer Bruce Fairbairn, outside songwriters Jim Vallance and Desmond Child) are still part of the mix, it's the band's familiar, tough swagger that powers this collection from the get-go. And while the Vallance-Child collaborations ("The Other Side" and the power ballad "What It Takes," respectively) were successful, it's telling that the album's twin pop-rock evergreens, "Love in an Elevator" and "Janie's Got a Gun," originated entirely within the band; the old dogs had not only learned a few new tricks, they seemed bent on tutoring their would-be trainers in the bargain. Pump is the high point of Aerosmith's improbable second chapter--and one of their best albums, period. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

don't get mad, get even: 10
Hoodoo: 10

2-0 out of 5 stars Noisy
This is a noisy album, with Steven Tyler's annoying screams from beginning to end. There are no riffs, everything is covered by a wall of noise, distortion. The songs by themselves are no bog deal, and there is absolutely NOTHING here that can be compared with TOYS IN THE ATTIC and ROCKS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dire Straits is better
This album has not put up on me at all. This album had too many
songs that have screaming and yelling in it. Aerosmith were totally better in the 70's. The reason I got this album is because Janie's Got a Gun was one of my favorite songs of all time. Other than that, the songs were just YELLING, SCREAMING,
& totally worse. Dire Straits are better because Mark Knopfler
has a much better voice than any other band. This album is just
as bad as Appetite for Destruction, & Use Your Illusion I. Don't
buy this album, buy Dire Straits albums insted.

Editorial Review

Colombian superstar Shakira's first English-language disc, Laundry Service, carries the pointed credit "Entire Album Produced by Shakira." That might be a signal to U.S. fans who helped two of her previous discs go platinum under the media radar--a sign that this planned breakthrough has more to offer than the input of a score of image makers and outside writers. And it does; even the occasional clunky lyric comes directly from her overflowing heart. Laundry Service's meld of danceable pop and rockier ideas and textures follows the similar path of the singer-songwriter's previous work. Indeed, for all its high-end production values, the record is ultimately one of the least glossy crossover vehicles imaginable. Despite an occasional lean toward Celine Dion territory ("Underneath Your Clothes"), it has a freshness that's sure to win over new listeners even after the first single, the sly "Whenever, Wherever," has reached the saturation point. While still not fully formed as an artist, she's getting close to something of her own--something that may flower after she dumps the vocal Alanis-isms. For now, it's still a pleasure to watch her grow. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Girl Can Really Rock!!!
I had to buy this album after the success of Shakira's first single "Whenever, wherever". The rest of this album is just as good as she goes from singing Rock to the Ballad "Underneath Your Clothes". This fine Columbian lady has a unique singing voice that the Anglo-Saxon world has finally discovered.Plus she looks absolutely GREAT in her video clips as she interprets Belly Dancing to her own adaptations. This is one lady with all the right songs and all the right moves!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it !
It's the first CD of Shakira that I've bought.

She's a true artist, she writes and composes her songs, she sings really good, she's an engaged singer.

I put only 4 stars because there are not many songs (only 10 original songs) and that it's not as good as her older CDs in Spanish.

But it's a great CD, all the songs are different, sometimes rock, sometimes pop, sometimes arabic.
Good purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great in English
I love Shakira, but her music sounds much better in spanish. This CD wasn't doing much for her voice and the songs aren't that great either, especially Eyes like yours(Ojos Asi). This song sounds much, much better in spanish.I would recommend you buy one of her spanish albums than this CD. ... Editorial Review

Rock-pop dance queen Shakira from Colombia is back with a sophomore album that pretty much mines the same field as her debut, with predictably similar sounds. "Ciega, Sordamuda" has the same urgent dance beat reminiscent of "Estoy Aquí," the monster club hit from her debut, Pies Descalzos. The singer/songwriter, whose whispery, quavering vocals sound like a cross between Alanis Morrisette and Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, wrote or cowrote all 11 tracks. Surprisingly, considering that noted producer ace Emilio Estefan is at the helm here, there is very little variance here from her debut. The tunes are mostly either rock-edged dance numbers or reflective melancholy ballads; the best include the echoey "Tú" and the meandering "Sombra de Ti." --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakira at her best
Here Shakira sounds so great! She sounds both happy and angry and probably sad. Every song is a masterpiece and 8 out of 11 were played everywhere on the radio.

Track Listing:

1. Ciega, Sordomuda(Blind, Deaf and Dumb)
2. Si Te Vas(If You Go)
3. Moscas En La Casa(Flies in The House)
4. No Creo(I Don't Believe)
5. Inevitable
6. Octavo Dia(The Eighth Day)
7. Que Vuelvas(I Want You Back)
8. Tu(You)
9. Donde Estan Los Ladrones?(Where are the thieves?)
10. Sombra De Ti(Shadow Of You)
11.Ojos Asi(Eyes Like Yours)

1. Ciega, Sordomuda.5/5. The first singtle. It has a Mariachisound mixed with Rock. Amazing!!

2. Si Te Vas. 5/5. Here Shakira it's calm and angry. First she starts slow but when it come to the chorus she sound so angry and rockin' like Hell!!! Amazing song!!!

3. Moscas En La Casa. 4/5. This is an amazing ballad but not the best one in this album. Shakira sounds so calm and sings witha feeling of melancholia! Great!

4. No Creo. 5/5. This song is simply amazing. This song it's very different from the previous three. Here Shakira sound so happy and very in love, but althought this song is about love it has social critics too.

5. Inevitable. 5/5. Amazing ballad. This has to be the best rock ballad ever! Here Shakira is sad and very angry because she is inevtable to keep loving his man after he's gone. Very sad.

6. Octavo Dia. 5/5. This is my favorite song of this album. This songs talk about how God after he created the universe went to take a vacation but when he returns, he find out that the world has become a completely Chaos!! I like how shakira sings in this song, she sounds so great!

7. Que Vuelvas. 4/5. This song it's the only song that has that vibe of Shakira's first album 'Pies Descalzos'. It sounds like a dance mix of 'Estoy Aqui' from 'Pies Descalzos'. The lyrics are great and it sounds like a filler song, but it's very good to be a filler.

8. Tu. 5/5. OK. Shakira's greatest ballad in this album! The lyrics are fantastic, it's all about love. Simply Amazing!

9. Donde Estan Los Ladrones? 5/5. The album title track. Here Shakira uses the harmonica again. This song is about all the kind of thieves that are in this world (politics, artists, protestants, etc.). This is a great rock song!

10. Sombra De Ti. 4/5. Have you ever heard Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'? Well, this song has the same guitars from that song, and that makes this song so sensual and very calm. A great ballad!

11. Ojos Asi. 5/5. OK. Shakira's arabic influences are here. This is just an extraordinary way of ending an album! This song has everything, rock, pop, dance, arabic sounds. Amazing!! That's why she included the english version on 'Laundry Service'

Well 52/55! That's why I this album deserves always 5 stars!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars You must have this CD!
This is one of the best CD's by Shakira.I love every song on here, but the only one that sounds much better on her Unplugged CD is No Creo. When she sings it on this CD her voice goes up and down, and squeks, like she's having a hard time singing.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Donde está la Shakira de antes?"
Deep lyrics, catchy beats and a sound extremely pure and sincere: this fantastic and unique combination becomes "Donde Están Los Ladrones?" (1998) a exceptional 90's latin album!

Shakira show her best in rock songs like "Octavo Día" (Eighth Day), "Si Te Vas" (If You Go), "Inevitable" and "Donde Están Los Ladrones?" (Where're the Thieves?). There is a lot of her true soul in these ones.

The ballads are not different: "Sombra de Tí" (Shadow of You), "Tu" (You) and "Moscas En La Casa" (Flies In the Home) shoot a rush of blood to our heads.

Definitely, this is an essential cd for all people that keep sensitive in a world full of brutality.

It's a big pity that this incredible Shakira was lost in "Laundry Service" (2001). ... Read more

Sturdy, handsome, and many times worth its weight in Burgundy, thiswine-saver set preserves opened bottles of wine for up to two weeks. (It won't work withsparkling wines or soft drinks, however.) A simple and ingenious pump fits onto one ofthe two bottle stoppers that come with the set and pumps the air from a bottle through thestopper, which then seals the resulting vacuum. For precision, the pump clicks when thecorrect vacuum level has been attained. With no oxygen inside the bottle to turn winevinegary it stays fresh until the stopper is removed. The matte-black pump and graystoppers fit onto a stable, shiny black storage base and look elegant as a top hat on thebar. 5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
We use our vacu vin wine saver all of the time since purchasing it about six months ago.It enables us to put partially full bottles back into our wine cooler, which we were unable to do before. We had tried unsuccessfully to do this with other wine corks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extend that bottle's life!
I recently bought this, and am happy with it. It "clicks" after 4 or 5 quick pumps for a 3/4 full bottle, and 7-8 clicks for a 1/4 filled bottle, to indicate vacuuum has been established, and the vacuum holds well, as does the wine!

Theprevious model did not click, however it certainly attained vacuum after about the same number of pumps..hearing the clicks is more reassuring!

As I recently bought it, I can't assess its long term durability as others have.

It does extend the wine's good taste for at least a few days in addition to the usual 2-3 days before the wine tastes "funny".

I've no reason to try it for more than a week of"corking up" a previously opened tasty bottle, so for these reasons i've got my money's worth, and it gets 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars The older model is more reliable.
Mine worked for a while, but then seemed to start to stick, which made it impossible to pump anymore.I tried soaking the entire mechanism several times in soap and water, but it still doesn't work.I initally liked the clicking feature and sleeker design of this model, but have gone back to using the old version, since this one stopped working. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Running with the Reviews
It has been almost a year since I read Wolves, and I have recommended it to several people who have helped me to see things from a broader perspective. Because of that, I felt compelled to look through the reviews posted here at Amazon to see what some other readers thought of what Dr. Estes has written. I was not surprized at the impact this book has had on almost everyone who has taken the time to post a review. I am also not surprized that a few reviewers just didn't get it. Much of what we are becomes known to us through both the words we read and the words we write. We never know ourselves totally because we continue to evolve, but certainly insight into where we have come from helps us to cope with where we are at any given time and helps provide a meaningful context for our continued evolution. I think perhaps those readers who didn't get it were still trapped by their belief in the limitations and restrictions imposed by others, but I do not judge, just speculate. Those who did get it, almost all communicated in a manner that (to me at least) reflected their awareness of life as being evolutionary, ever changing and wondrous. Some of us, perhaps most of us, will continue to play the various roles we have learned to play in order to survive the various situations we find ourselves in. But some of us do believe in our own power and believe that power embodies both the choices we make and the responsibility we accept for the consequences of those choices. I'm just a man, but the women I most admire, the ones who are really important to me, they all "run with the wolves!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my spirit
This is probably for me one of the most powerful things I have ever read.If I had the power, it wound be read by especially every woman in the world and men.

I say to Dr. Estes Thank you for this gift of spirit and soul life that is and will remain a work in progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly true
I'm a 37 year old female, a graduate from a women's college (and I'm sure this book was on at least one class syllabus, but I did not read it then), and I'm shocked at how the stories mirror my life experiences. The Red Shoes and Bluebeard are most disturbing.Lessons I wish I had learned years ago! This is a great book.Should be required reading for every woman living in our culture. And any man who wants to really understand women (and, in turn, himself) should also read it.I don't agree w/ everything she says, but for the most part, she's really onto something true and real in our culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The First Changing of the Guard
Season 4 of MASH marked two distinctive cast changes - Harry Morgan's Colonel Potter replaced MacLean Stevenson's Henry Blake, and Mike Ferrell's BJ Hunnicut replaced Wayne Rogers' Trapper John. It's notable that while most shows usually fall apart after one significant cast change, MASH suffered two in one season - and still went on for another seven years.

There's a wealth of strong material this season, and Morgan and Ferrell fit right in. It's nice to finally have an authority figure that can put Frank in his place, and BJ's more of an equal to Hawkeye than Trapper was. Plus, BJ provides a fresh audience viewpoint as he hasn't been in Korea as long as the others have. The change in cast is also accompanied by a slight change in tone, which is natural - MASH as a series matured every season, and season 4 is the natural extension of the more serious moments of season 3.

Not that there aren't any funny moments, because there's still several: the introductions of the new characters, Frank Burns in a runaway tank, and an entire episode in the wilderness with a broken bus. The "letters home" plot device is used thrice this season, with Potter, BJ, and Radar all reporting on the daily happenings around camp. Two other notable episodes include "Deluge," which is set to old news footage from the 1950's, and "The Interview," a black-and-white episode where the doctors are interviewed in documentary fashion. The only episode that really misses is "Hawkeye", where Hawkeye has to continually talk to himself to keep from losing consciousness. MASH works best as an ensemble piece, and listening to 25min of stand-up comedy from Alan Alda doesn't work so well.

A quality season that keeps MASH in its prime, even with cast changes. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Top 5 television series of all time...
Based on a Richard Hooker novel of the same name, MASH was released in 1970 as a full-length feature film by 20th Century Fox before experiencing widespread success as a groundbreaking television sitcom in the Fall of 1972. The show's brilliant integration of drama and comedy made it one of the most celebrated shows in TV history, culminating in an eleven year prime time series stint. The 1983 series finale of MASH made history as the program with the single largest audience in television history, beating out several SuperBowls and the fabled "Who Shot J.R." episode of Dallas. With the proliferation of new television mediums, it's a record likely to never be broken...

The sitcom is set in South Korea during American involvement in the Korea War (with M*A*S*H standing for "Mobile Army Surgical Hospital"). Buffered from the front lines by a mountain range and a minefield, the men and women of MASH were tasked with patching up wounded American soldiers. Unique to its genre, the cast of MASH was unusually large. Surgeons Dr. Benjamin Pierce (Alan Alda) and Dr. "Trapper" John McIntyre (Wayne Rogers) play the roles of excellent doctors who enjoy women and booze, while Dr. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and Nurse Practitioner Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) play foil to the two men's shenanigans (due to a contract dispute, Rogers' character was later replaced by Dr. B.J. Hunnicutt - played by Mike Farrell). The character of Frank Burns was also later replaced by Dr. Charles Emerson Winchester (David Ogden Stiers)...

Corporal Max Klinger (Jamie Farr) provides comic relief with his early attempts to procure a discharge by dressing in women's clothing, and Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher) adds flavor to a diverse cast of characters. Also rounding out the cast are Lt. Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson), Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff), and Col. Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan)...

The MASH (Season 4) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes including the series premiere "Welcome to Korea" in which Trapper John McIntyre receives orders to ship home and is replaced by Dr. B.J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell). Meanwhile, Pierce butts heads with temporary commanding officer Frank Burns as he attempts to say goodbye to Trapper John before he leaves (Pierce was on leave when the orders came in)... Other notable episodes from Season 4 include "The Late Captain Pierce" in which Pierce's father is mistakenly notified of his son's death, and "The Gun" in which a wounded colonel's collectable gun turns up missing (prompting Pierce and B.J. to hunt down the culprit)...

Below is a list of episodes included on the MASH (Season 4) DVD:

Episode 73 (Welcome to Korea)
Episode 74 (Change of Command)
Episode 75 (It Happened One Night)
Episode 76 (The Late Captain Pierce)

I loved this -- some of the best episodes are on this S*M.A.S.H hit TV series. It has the new Colonel starting out and BJ arriving - brings back memories of afternoons after school in the winter with the smell of mum's best on the stove.

A highlight episode is called "Jesus Christ" if anything this
is the reason to buy the Set. I had never seen the episode before and lays down the reasons that I would like to buy the complete series as they are released.

It is amazing that these are available, there is amazing acting and character portrayls that go beyond the "norm" this may be responsible for Mash's success.

Editorial Review

Chuck Jones directed some of the funniest shorts in the history offilmmaking, and this 1979 feature-length compilation includes several of hisbest cartoons. Among the 11 shorts shown in their entirety are the classicsRobin Hood Daffy, What's Opera, Doc?, Bully for Bugs, andDuck Amuck, which remain as hilarious as they were when first releasedalmost 50 years ago. As with any collection, the viewer wonders why some filmswere included and others omitted: Why Hare-way to the Stars andOperation: Rabbit, but not Rabbit of Seville or A Bear forPunishment? Nor is the material always shown to its best advantage: LongHaired Hare has, unfortunately, been cut, and combining footage from severalRoad Runner shorts into a 20-minute montage weakens the pacing Jonesbuilt into the individual films. These caveats aside, The Bugs Bunny RoadRunner Movie provides a showcase not only for Jones's razor-sharp timing, but for the work of his exceptional crew, which included designer Maurice Noble, writer Mike Maltese, composers Carl Stalling and Milt Franklyn, and voice actorMel Blanc. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great compilation
This feature animation consists of five or ten regular cartoons starring Bugs, Daffy, or the RoadRunner. They're glued together into some semblance of a unit with a new outer story: Bugs, after a wildly successful career, is in retirement. He is interviewed ...

The cartoons are all good ones, but their original titles are not given. One of my favorites, I think it's called "What's Opera, Doc?" pits Elmer Fudd against Bugs in Wagnerian drama - it's a howl. Bugs, Daffy Duck, Elmer and Porky Pig appear in a few combinations, with cameos by Marvin the Martian (a personal favorite). The whole set ends up with Roadrunner taunting Wile E. Coyote into new realms of improbable physics.

One charming feature was that Mel Blanc voiced the interlude pieces relatively late in his life. I could hear a little age creeping into his voice. It was very appropriate to the retired Bugs Bunny, but a little sad too.

It's good goofy fun. The assembly is a bit forced, but the individual `toons are part of how my generation grew up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first Looney Tunes movie 25 years on
Legendary animator Chuck Jones' The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie came out in September of 1979.
Chuck Jones has directed some of the funniest shorts in the history of filmmaking, and this 1979 feature-length compilation includes many of his best cartoons.
Among the 11 shorts shown in their entirety are the classics Hare Way to the Stars, Duck Dodgers, Robin Hood Daffy, Duck Amuck(quite possibly the greatest cartoon ever made), Ali Baba Bunny, Bully for Bugs, The Long Haired Hare and What's Opera Doc? which are still hilarious as they were when first released well over 50 years ago.
However, some viewers questioned why other great cartoons like Rabbit of Seville and such were deleted.
Amongst the classic cartoons is some new animation of Bugs from Chuck Jones recalling his exploits with Daffy, Marvin Martian, Elmer Fudd(whom he referred to as E. Elmer Fudd) and Wile E. Coyote whom also has a confrontation with The Road Runner in a 20 minute montage which was also great as well.
Also, the wascally wabbit's explanations of chases was hysterical and his imitation of Yosemite Sam with his ears masquerading Sam's moustache saying "that long-eared carrot eating varmint" was hysterical as well.
Also, the beginning credits and ending credits were funny with the That's All Folks trying to curtail the movie at start and near the end and Bugs getting irked each time and puts either a NOT or a NOT QUITE between That's All and Folks.
At the end after the credits finished, Bugs sits on the WB logo smiling saying "Eat Your Heart Out Boit Reynolds" and That's Really All Folks!.
This movie is highly recommended!
