Editorial Review

Bright and boldly colored, this espresso machine from FrancisFrancis! is for those who relish sleek, modern design in their kitchen and cheerful colors in their decor scheme. Leave it out on the counter, as it's too heavy to move around much. This machine is designed for use with prepackaged coffee "pods," specifically Easy Serving Espresso (ESE) pods, or with regular ground coffee--handles for both are included.

The machine is 10-by-12 inches in overall size and has an instrument panel look on the front: flip switches, pilot lights, and a temperature gauge to allow for more precise temperature control, which helps prevent overheating the espresso. There's also a pull-out drawer in the bottom section to house the drip grill, a removable plastic bin at the back for the water supply, a built-in cappuccino feature, and a circular wire holder on top for warming inverted coffee cups. --Marcie Bovetz

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2001 model still going strong! Great espresso
Having worn out a Capresso machine after daily brewing 4-6 shots of espresso in making lattes/cappuccinos, etc. I went looking for a more durable machine.

I bought an X1 in 2001/2 when it was a brand new model (in stainless) and it is great:

1. It heats up quickly.
2. It brews VERY consistently.
3. The ESE thing is the best mess-preventer ever.
4. Separate steam-temperature setting is great. Heats milk much faster than other, cheaper consumer models.
5. Machine has capacity to steam enough milk for at least 3 tall lattes before needing a quick "refill" of water from the pump switch.
6. I like the simplicity and total manual operation. The switches aren't labeled, but there's only 3. Kind of a morning meditation for me.

The most important, non-obvious things:

1. Don't leave a pod in the holder and move temperature to steam setting. When you unhook the pod holder, steam will instantly blow apart the ESE pod, which, given that it is more than boiling hot, will hurt, plus will dry instantly on the wall.
2. Use INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED ESE pods, unless you use them all within 2-3 hours of opening the tin. They sour very quickly, even in the freezer. I am partial to Starbucks pods, given my household's addiction to that brand, but I think that is more of a preference than a quality issue. Illy tastes fine, but you have to use them all quickly.
3. If you serve a lot of guests, the double unit (X3?) might be better. With the dual-temperature settings, you'll spend a lot of time running water through the unit to cool the steam setting back down to brew the next batch of espresso. Lots of refills of the water container, which is a bit of a pain to remove from the back of the machine.

Overall, a great performer after 4 years of daily, multiple use. This thing is a great machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars GIVES YOU A PHENOMENAL ESPRESSO IF YOU HANDLE CORRECTLY
Two months ago I bought the X1 from the new serie "X1 by appointment" at the online store azone.ch. Discount price about 500 USD including a box of 18 E.S.E pods from AMICI. The inventor of the machine Francesco Illy is a "pope" of the coffee industry. He founded the "Francis Francis" Company in Switzerland. His father and grandfather are the founder of the "ILLY" coffee brand. A name for sophisticated taste of coffee. Francesco Illy started to launch his own brand "AMICI". There are actually 4 different E.S.E. pods available. My favourites are the "Espresso" (silver box with red stripe) and "Ristretto" (..with black stripe). Please check amici.ch for more information. So, that's a little bit about history and now my review: When I read the negative postings I wonder why there are some problems when using the machine or why the coffee gives some people only average joy. Here my suggestions for a real espresso experience:

Rule 1: Strictly use the E.S.E. pods....the one from AMICI or LAVAZZA I can suggest. Not try to use non-E.S.E. pods. They will not fit perfectly.

Rule 2: Buy some high quality espresso cups. If the porcelain is robust and thick it can keep and lead the warmth much better.

Rule 3: Always use pre-heatened cup. Place them on top of the coffee machine. I never turn off the machine. If you switched of the machine, wait about 20 minutes before preparing coffee.
And important: Pour one espresso cup of water before inserting any pod. This guarantees, that the cup gets his temperature and that the machine gets its operation temperature.

Rule 4: Keep your machine clean. After every use clean the pad-holder. Put it in the machine (be sure there are no pods inside) and simply pour water for about 10 seconds trough it.

Rule 5: For the ones who experienced damages, I think, they didn't threat it correctly! After using the steam YOU MUST SWITCH BACK to the espresso mode and activate the toggle switch for espresso. Simply pour water about 20 seconds. Now the boiler will not overheat and protects the machine. If you do not follow that rule your machine could be damaged seriously!

Final commentary: Those people who wants to compare the X1 with any one from Braun for about 99 USD and think the taste is the same, I must only say, that they have no concept of good coffee taste. The Francis Francis is nothing for people who confuse real espresso flavor with the over-sweeted plastic or paper taste of any Mc Donalds or Dunkin' Donuts sewage.
The first time I have seen the X1 I knew, soon or less I will purchase it. The unmistakable design didn't relinquish myself anymore. Every day walking to the kitchen, the Francis Francis X1 smiles at me. A machine to take into one's heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great looker, with faults. but i think it is great.
I am going t give this machine 2 stars for looks and an extra star for function this makes it a 3 star machine.I will review it to counter another review about this machine. The review was written by : Diego Frare.
1-**You can only get a perfect espresso from a professional machine and only if you use it to make dozens of coffees every day. I think the average bar in Italy makes hundreds of cups a day, and in places like some highway service areas they easily make over one thousand every day.**
a-I don't know how is this relevant
b-It is not true, If you teach yourself the art of making espresso, then you can make "great" espresso from many machines that are on the market today, but making the "perfect" espresso is a debatable for even the professional machines.
2-**The most annoying one is the lack of a pressure relief valve, so the water remains under pressure for minutes after you finish brewing your coffee, and you cannot remove the portafilter without getting coffee grounds sprayed all over. **
a-I believe the machine has a pressure valve, that does not allow the pressure to go above a certain amount (my guess 11 or 12 bar). What Diego is referring to is the absence of a 3 way pressure relief valve. This crates what is called "portafilter sneeze" which he describes.
b-The solution for that is in the same box as the machine came with. I guess you need to read the instructions to get the best out of your machine.
c-The solution is using the providedTamping / Anti "Sneeze" Gizmo, with it you car remove the Portafilter (PF) right away with no worries of any mess.
3-**. Another flaw is the finish, too prone to get scratched, at least in the black version. **
a-I have the red one, and I do not have any problems keeping it scratch free.
4-**. Also, the front panel of the plastic drip tray should have been made of stainless steel: because it's made of regular steel, you need to remove the front panel every time you wash the tray, otherwise it will rust easily. It wouldn't be too bad if it popped out and snapped back in, but you have to unscrew the knob to remove it. **
a-I am not sure which machine is Diego reviewing here. I am completely lost. What I have is a cover plate made of stainless steel (your cup would sit on there), then I have the drip tray, and it slides out like a drawer (you could detach it completely for ease of cleaning, this is the knob you see in the picture)
5-**. I closely looked at the spouts, and it's a one piece die cast unit, so I don't think it's my particular example that's bad, but it's a design flaw or a bad die cast template **
a-This is not true. The PF is cast but the spouts are screwed into the threaded part of the PF, the cause for that problem is most probably uneven tamping.
6-**if you put a fraction of a gram too much, the system will not be tight enough and water will leak from the top of the portafilter and fall into your cup.**
a-the machine comes with two baskets, one single shot and one double shot. Single is supposed to filled with 7 grams. I filled mine with 9 grams (using an accurate electronic scale [error is 0.1]) and I had no leakage at all.I guess if you go above this for the single basket (which I do not see why) you will have a problem.
7-** consistently decent espresso with a home machine ** (steps)
a-great instructions which I think everyone should use

In summery Diego might have a bad apple, and should have sent it back to the company under it's warranty. But also it might have been an older X1, the new X1's have been almost completely rebuilt as of 2004.
MY NEG for this machine are as follows:
1-Single shot basket is hard to perfect (I still have not perfected it), yet for sure you will need to put more ground coffee than what the instruction say.
2-The new boiler thermo controller is very accurate è it turns on and off the boiler at least 3-4 times during the process of brewing 1 shot of espresso. This is good, yet the problem is when the boiler goes on again, there seems to be a small drop in electricity to the pump that is driving the coffee through.I think this is missed thing when the company made the 110V version of their European 240V.
3-Stem wand is too short and that strong. It is hard, but you can do some micro foaming with it, but not with too deep of a pitcher.

4-The absence of a pressure gauge.

I will not go and list the PLUS things since the Negatives should be a good indicator of the quality of the machine. If you need to read more go to coffeegeek.com and check their review of this machine.

This compact 1,200-watt machine automatically produces espresso with the push of a button. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. Other noteworthy features include a removable 30-serving water tank with an intake water filter and water-level display, an antidrip system, a patented filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, and a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes. A coffee tamper and measuring spoon accompany the 11-3/4-by-8-3/4-by-8-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Durability
Worked great out of the box, although the electronic controls were erratic and hard to set. Made good espresso.

However, after about 18 months, I have to throw it away and buy something else. It is gradually self-destructing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bang for the buck
I purchasd this unit for my fiance 2+ years ago for Christmas and we couldn't be more impressed.I consulted with a close friend who used to run a coffee shop, and he suggested this model, and it has never disappointed.Makes a quick and strong esspresso, has great settings to control the strength of brew, and is easy to operate. The only (small) complaint is the small space where the espresso is dispensed - there is only room for an espresso cup or something short.Makes a beautiful creamy brew.I do highly reccomend that you only use filtered or bottled water in the unit to keep it from getting build-up lime/scaling.We have only just de-scaled ours for the first timeafter 27+ months of use.The clean water makes a big difference, and a better quality brew.

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy initial setup, bad quality coffee + hard handling
When we bought the machine we were hoping for something easy to setup, but make decent coffee.

The first is true, it's not that difficult. However, you run into numerous problems pretty quickly.

1) Attaching the coffee filter is hard.Only after a little while I figured out that you can only put so much coffee into it, that you can still attach it.
2) Only very small cups fit.
3) Amount of espresso made is inconsistent.Sometimes it fills the entire cup, sometimes only 1/3 of it.
4) Espresso brew runs over, by the filter.Even after adjusting.Adjusting the filter we lost the screw, we are truly "screwed" now.Already sent mail to Brittax, haven't heard back.
5) The extra coffee runs into the container below, needs to continuously be cleaned.
6) Today the steaming valve started leaking, water running out of it at a constant drip while brewing espresso.

If there is/would be a way to return this machine after 2 months of usage I will. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Save your money and still have good coffee...
This is the best most effective way to make expresso and the cheapest!!!Don't waste your money on any other kind of machine--they are just smoke and mirrors. If you are fans of Goldie Bear and yearn for the jolt of espresson she brews in the monring but this espresso maker and yo will have money for more books.

2-0 out of 5 stars average tasting coffee, not espresso
for all who are expert coffee tasters I will say 'lower your expectations'.
1)This device makes good tasting coffee but far away from espresso. It lacks thickness and smell.
2)The rubber tears off quickly.
3) Hard to clean without using soap
4) the bottom part is not polished so it changes its colour and builds up residue, which does not smell good. Also when left wet it forms white spots, which presumably come from the aluminium. ALUMINIUM IS DANGEROUS FOR YOUR HEALTH!
5)don't fool yourselves reading other reviews and get a stainless steel one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap pot, great coffee!
This is such a wonderful espresso-maker...I've compared stovetop espresso with that made in my relatives' expensive machines, and the Moka pot makes equally delicious coffee. All I need are good beans, ground very well, and an attentive ear.I love to hear the bubbling in the morning!I use stovetop-brewed espresso for iced mocha lattes, and they're superb, and much cheaper than buying one at a coffeebucks place. At under $20 this Moka pot is definitely the best coffee bargain to be had. ... Capresso C1000 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center with Claris Water Care System
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $1,100.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Capresso's C1000 is a complete coffee-bar system that filters water, grinds beans, tamps the fresh grind, brews the espresso, steams the milk, and then rinses and shuts off automatically. Its 1,250 watt ThermoCoil heating system heats up in just 30 seconds, and then is ready for whatever coffee drink is wanted next. It's possible to brew just one shot of espresso or one cup of pressure-brewed coffee or up to 16 ounces, with adjustable settings for coffee strength. This system does not have a timer to start the machine in the morning, though (so you'll have to do that yourself), but it's so speedy that fresh-ground coffee is ready in a couple of minutes.

A 64-ounce removable water container filters water for fresh taste, removing impurities and adding an organic substance that removes carbon and decreases decalcifying. The integrated conical burr grinder has 6 adjustable settings for coffee bean type and coarseness of grind. Its bean container holds 10 ounces (the machine also works with preground coffee), while a "Frother Feature" offers continuous steam output, dual settings for lattes and cappuccinos, and a hot-water dispenser for tea.

The system must be cleaned after brewing 200 coffee drinks, using special cleaning tablets. Extra parts, filtering cartridges, and cleaning tablets are available from the manufacturer, and there's a toll-free customer-service number. --Marcie Bovetz

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tasting, Multi Featured Time Saver
I bought this machine after going over many reviews from different machines.I couldn't decide between a semi-automatic or automatic, but finally decided on the Capresso C-1000 fully automatic. As a family of coffee drinkers with different tastes for coffee strengths, this machine is a crowd pleaser. Before I got this, I had to get up early in the morning to make one pot of weaker coffee for my wife, and another pot stronger for me,and then weaken that one just a bit for my daughter. With this you can make custom fresh ground coffee cup by cup and satisfy everyone(in way less time!!).The capuccinos and espressos are just great. It is a big unit and takes up a lot of counter space, but it looks "cool" doing it.I tried 100% colombian beans(8'oclock brand, recommended by a "consumer magazine we can't mention") and it is just wonderful with great aroma, body and flavor. The coffee is plenty hot if you drink it black. It is a bit cool if you add cold milk.It is super hot if you froth the milk first(I hot-frothed mine for a good while and burned my tongue big time).

As other reviewers said, it is a bit difficult at first to remember what does what. You definitely need your user guide for the first week of use.

I have one big complaint with this machine.Sure the dispenser adjusts to accept "little-bitty" espresso cups, but it will not adjust tall enough for my favorite coffee mugs.If your cup is over 3 7/8'' tall it will not fit under the dispensing unit.

Overall, I am very pleased with the convenience and quality of this machine(cool, impressive,"check this out" factor, too), and would buy it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars C1000 has design flaw
the O ring that controls the water after temping the grounds is either to small for a piece of metal that holds it in place is off set causing the ring to be cut into. This allows the water to run straight thru the machine and onto the counter.
We have had 2 of the C1000's and neither lasted over 18 months.

1-0 out of 5 stars Customer Service Review
We bought the Capresso model 101 several years ago. Obviously this wasn't the kind of sophisticated machine we're talking about here, but I think our experience says something about whether anybody should buy anything from Capresso. Our 101 worked for less than 1 year, then there was no water pressure. We paid the shipping and additional repair fee, but it only worked a little better before giving up again. This happened 3 more times ($40.00 per repair) before we gave up. The worst part was their customer service. From the beginning they were arrogant and unhelpful. After the last breakdown, the rep told me they couldn't waive their fee because we'd used the machine for 2 weeks, so it was a "new"(??) repair. Their literature says they will "repair or replace", but our model was discontinued, so too bad. If we're going to spend so much on something that should be fun, maybe good will toward customers should be part of the package. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For java junkies, this tool's just the thing for rounding out the espresso-making accessories. After measuring the ground coffee and putting it into your espresso machine's filter cup, it's important to pack down the grounds to ensure good results. The heavy, slightly rounded stainless-steel base does all the work, with virtually no effort on your part (after all, you haven't had your coffee). The broad, nonslip grip guarantees a solid hold while you tamp. --Cynthia Nims ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
I'm surprised that the other reviewers are so unhappy with this tamper. I use mine every day and it works great. It's just the right size and weight for my machine plus it looks good and it takes up very little storage space.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't know why I bought this
My Briel already has this built in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Toy ...
Buy a real tamper, not something designed by someone who evidently knows little about coffee making. The rounded edge is inadequate for even packing of your coffee, and without even knowing the diameter of the tamper you might as well save some cash and not pack at all. For proper extraction you have to get a tamper that fits _your_ filter. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For making espresso and coffee drinks such as cappuccino and café latte at home, this set covers all bases--it even includes a book that explains coffee and cocoa and offers coffee- and cocoa-drink recipes. The compact (9-3/4 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide by 8-1/2 inches deep) electric espresso machine works simply. Equipped with a tight boiler cap and valve for safety, it brews up to four cups of espresso in about five minutes. Just pour cold water into the boiler, spoon espresso-roast coffee (a 10-1/2-ounce can is included) into the filter basket, place the basket into the filter holder, lock the holder into place, and switch the knob to "brew." In about four minutes, espresso flows into a four-cup carafe that sits on the machine's drip plate: four demitasse cups and saucers, with four spoons, await.

If cappuccino, café latte, hot chocolate, or other milk-based drinks are desired, turn the knob to "froth" and the machine's stainless-steel wand emits steam. Half-fill the frothing pitcher with cold milk (chocolate-flavored for hot chocolate), slip the rubber frothing tip on the wand, place the frothing tip just under the surface of the milk, and heat the milk while creating a foaming cap of froth: two cappuccino cups and saucers await. Pour a shot or two of brewed espresso into them, spoon milk and froth on top, and enjoy. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat the price!
Since I just wanted a small unit for a morning cappuccino, this Melitta is perfect for me. The coffee is hot and tastes good. (Just experiment to get the right amount of coffee.) I like a full mug, so I make two cups at the same time. Why would anyone gripe about all the free accessories or that they're made in China? (How many things do you find "Made in the US" any more??) The heavy white frothing pitcher alone was worth it for me (and Melitta coffee beans were included in my box--that's a $7 bonus right there!) There was a free cookbook and all those cute espresso cups, spoons, cappuccino cups, etc.! But the important thing was the unit itself--it works fine for me. I find it best to let the coffee start dripping into the carafe (wait until it's about half way done) before starting to froth the milk--to get more steam; not right away. Otherwise, it's been a gem of a machine so far, and an incredible value! I'd highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars the basic starter espresso maker
i am a full time student and am on a budget.
i needed a unit that would make espresso and this came with cups.

good:
-inexspensive
-makes good espresso(use fresh grounds)
-easy to use
-compact
-easy to clean
bad:
-it has problems with making warm froth(i drink only espresso, so not a problem for me).
- melitta could make a better instruction booklet
-the desert book doesnt give tips on how to make espresso

this is a good starter unit for the home espresso maker, but if you are an exsperinced espresso maker, you might want one with more frills.

this is the basic espresso maker, but it works well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic espresso maker for the price!
I can't figure out what you guys are all in a twist over. I bought this machine, minus the espresso cups, frothing pitcher, etc., and I only paid $10 less for all the goodies you got (this offer wasn't available when I was looking for an espresso machine.)

This is the SAME model as the one I got, minus all the frills you got for ten bucks. I bought this over a year ago, and it's a FANTASTIC espresso machine! It works great, makes wonderful espresso, fantastic lattes (my fave), and it's easy to clean and completely reliable.

I was looking for a second model to give to my boyfriend for a birthday president, and lo and behold, this uber deal is available! I'm taking advantage of it, and why not? Ever since my boyfriend tasted how great the espresso is from this machine, he's been trying to steal mine!

I HIGHLY recommend it (andyou guys would know this if amazon hadn't removed the OTHER review on just the machine, minus all the bonuses. There, this same machine got FOUR stars, and that's what I based my original purchase on.

Btw...they were RIGHT.) :) ... Read more

La Pavoni EPC-8 Europiccola 8-Cup Lever Style Espresso Machine, Chrome

Editorial Review

Whip up custom coffee specialty drinks in your own kitchen, with just the right amount of foam on your double tall latte, with this sturdy Italian-made espresso machine. It has an all-steel construction under heavy chrome plating, making it as sturdy and shiny as the bumpers of a '55 Buick. The machine is 12 by 7 inches in size (with the handle lowered) and comes with a tamper, screen, screen holder, measuring ladle, and cappuccino attachment, as well as complete operating instructions and a ten-minute video.

The machine's sleek, retro look sports shiny surfaces, a thick base with curved edges, and a pull-down coffee compressor. It's attractive enough to leave out on the counter (and really too heavy to move around frequently), and once you get used to inexpensive lattes at home, you'll want it handy for everyday use. --Marcie Bovetz

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Machine, But with many faults.
beautiful machine. But I cannot give it any higher score. It is very nice to use and you can make great tasting espresso with it (with a lot of practice and experimentation) , but it is far from an excellent machine. Here are the faults in my opinion:
1- Machine is not heavy enough. (this is a big problem as you will see with many of the points the follow).
2- securing the coffee into the machine requires some strength which is a problem because of (1) --> the machine will not stay still it will move around.
3- The lever pulling and pushing is needs strength --> this is a problem because of (1) again.
3- the Milk frother is too close to the machine (if you are not careful you will burn yourself a couple of times as I did) Also this makes the frothing process much harder.
4- I do not think that the machine keeps enough pressure to get a froth (not even for one cup) for a latte
5- The reservoir is somewhat small (minor problem)
6- because of (3) the milk will make a mess when frothing.
7- Instructions are vague in some areas such as how you are suppose to be using the double shot espresso.
8- The automatic milk frather attachment worked all right for couple of times, but started to decline in performance. (this could be my fault, but I did not experiment with it enough to tell)

I am returning my unit and will be trying the Francis Francis (they were both the same price where I bought this machine from) and I will post a review there about my next machine.

I hope this can help some of you out there shopping for an espresso machine.

This machine was recommended to me by a good Italian Friend of mine, and he is very picky about his espresso, so this machine must be able to make really good espresso if one did not mind all it's faults and had the time to perfect their espresso making wit it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but impractical
The La Pavoni has become an industrial design icon, and, in some circles more concerned about prettiness than practicality, the must-have espresso maker.

Unfortunately, looking good is the only thing it does well. You can get reasonably good espresso out of this machine, but only after weeks of tinkering and experimenting, and it is just extremely inconvenient to use.

Here are the problems I have collected from two separate friends (one who owns one, and another who used to and swore never to get near one again!)

1) somewhat fragile
2) no thermostat, machine could explode if relief valve jams (my friend's did!)
3) machine requires close monitoring (see item 2)
4) after using up water in (small) tank, machine must be left to cool down before reuse
5) messy
6) limited supply of steam for cappucinos (see item 2)
7) difficult to gauge the right amount of coffee: not enough and you can't achieve sufficient pressure, too much and you can't lock in the filter holder
8) difficult to learn how to "pump" properly
9) even on its best day, can't achieve the results of a decent pump-driven machine that costs less than half its price.

If you plan on using the machine but absolutely have to have an exotic-looking, conversation piece machine, you may want to look at the Francis Francis machine. It's in the same price range, but at least it's pump-driven.

If you care more about the taste of the coffee and the practicality of the machine, you should definitely consider the Saeco Vienna. It's 30% cheaper than the La Pavoni, makes better coffee, and has push-button convenience. It's also extremely reliable, and perfect for when you entertain (anybody can use it)

That leaves the La Pavoni for people who want a great looking conversation piece on their countertop but don't plan on using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravissimo!
This is a Ferrari of espresso machines. In addition to being a work of art (it's at MOMA in the permanent collection), La Povoni makes great espresso, period. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Greenville OH reader is dead wrong
Mr Haviza should stick to the comic books. Not only does this book provide recipes comparable to starbucks, it gives insight on how to tweak starbucks a little to bring out even more boldness. So Mr Haviza, just read the book again. This time without Abby sitting on top of you in all of her glory, although that is a pretty sight i might add

2-0 out of 5 stars For the beginner
Mathew Tekulsky has set forth clear information and instructions for the begiining barista. He offers decent tips for making a good cup (Use fresh water, the importance of the proper grind, don't boil the water, and clean your equipment regularly). He explains clearly the various methods for brewing (drip, French press, vacuum method, the percolator etc.)And, of course, he has info about making espresso properly.

Most of the book consists of recipes, and I appreciated knowing the difference between, for example, the Cappuccino and the Cappuccino Royale (the Royale is a Cappuccino topped with whipped cream, and often with almond, rum, brandy, mint, or vanilla extract).

If you're a beginner, it's useful to have this information all in one place, but I must say that most of this is readily available on the Internet. And, you don't need this book if you have some coffee-brewing experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars A basic outline
Maybe I didn't read int the information enough prior to purchasing this book, but I found it to be very basic.More like a text book than a recipe book.Lots of history and background information, and slim on the recipes. Most of this information you can easily find on the internet.I was looking for a guide to make what you might buy and Starbucks, and though a couple might be here I think it is a far cry from how they actually do it.This book was published in 1993 maybe things have evolved since then. ...
