Editorial Review

Looking like an especially well-regulated art nouveau lava lamp, the Riedel Vinum Series Cuvee/Prestige glass was designed to add to your enjoyment of your favorite sparkling wines. The obvious and prime attraction to any bubbly is the bubbles. This glass is known as 416/48 to Riedel loyalists; at the interior bottom of its weighty, languidly curved bowl lies a small crystal pinhole. This etched "fizz mark" provides a rough surface on which the beads form, rising to the surface in a steady stream through the center of the liquid. It may sound scientifically dry, but it's just Riedel's way of putting the "fizz" in "physics." --Tony Mason ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Fav
The perfect Riedel Champagne glass focuses the nose of the Champagne like focusing a magnifying glass. Layers of flavor become apparent singlely, instead of just a muddled mass. Tulip shape holds in fine bubbles so the wine doesn't go flat too fast.

Be careful hand washing, turn upside down and hold NEAR glass and shake gently, don't hold the bottom or stem may crack. Hang dry upside down.

Yeah they are pricey. Frankly all the Reidel glasses, each designed specifically for a different varietal, focus nose better than those made by any other glass maker I know. These people know what they are doing. They must have some real sommeliers (wines experts in restaurants) on their staff to design these. For high end wines, get the specific Reidel glass designed for what you drink most!

I have also used these for tasting quality dessert wines and cognac (only filling up a quarter or less) and they worked well for parsing noses!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
These glasses strike just the right taste/aesthetics/quality/price balance. They are perfect to use to enjoy fine champagne at parties and not so fragile that I worry about the glasses being too easily broken or too costly to replace if something did happen to any of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product in reasonable price
I'm a Riedel fan because I used to work for wines business so I had chance to test different glasses for free, and Riedel offer the best quality along with the price factor. I have Sommelier Bordeaux glasses (real great for collection wines but it's a pain to hand wash it by myself with great care next morning) but Vinum series are the best for daily use. I don't mind that litte logo at all so it's not a problem to me (as long as it's my favour brand names). But caution: Riedel suffering quality control problem and it's happened few years ago, I know it because I used to check the shipment piece by piece when it arrived at my shops. My first shipment was no exception, it's came with 3 defected glasses, 1 with critical defect (Borken edge) and 2 with major defects (Bubbles mark at the bodies) Hey, it's 50% and unacceptable from such a famous manufacturer! The logistics from Amazon save the problem, the second shipment arrived 2 days later (Amazing!) and all glasses are free from defects (Hurray!). You got to be serious in drinking to appreciate what Reidel's quality make your fine champagne shine. Don't buy this if you expect these glasses will make your cheap sparkling wines taste better (although it helps a little), it will definitely disappoint you. Remember these glasses are suppose to pair with fine champagne! ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of the more versatile stems among the 19 myriad shapes in Riedel's Vinum line, this glass, model 416/15 to loyalists, hits almost all the food groups. It's called the Chianti Classico glass, referring to the Italian region producing red wines from the Sangiovese grape, but the glass is designed to enhance the nuance and flavor of wines made of Dolcetto or Montepulciano, too. And Zinfandel drinkers--we're talking red Zin here--will find that this glass focuses lots of bright fruit to the nose, rounding off some of the rougher edges of a young red. A 1997 Napa Valley Zinfandel, tasted in both Riedel and "Brand X," bears this out. And lovers of the Riesling grape, take note: this exact same glass is also marketed as the Riedel Vinum series Riesling Grand Cru glass, perfect for both the dry versions as well as the sweeter late harvest renditions of this tasty white. Why, it's a veritable vinous United Nations--Italians, Germans, and North Americans of all colors using an Austrian forum to show off. --Tony Mason ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the glass that started it all for me
It's a bit of a long story, maybe more than you want to know, but it might help you make what'll one day be a decision you'll look back on with favor. So here goes:

Five years ago, a buddy of mine invited me to dinner in honor of my birthday. He'd opened a 10 year old bottle of Storybook Mountain organic zinfandel, and offered me a glass. It was marvelous. Then he said, "Well, try it in this." He gave me another glass (it was the Riedel Vinum chianti/zin glass), and I put it under my nose. Encountering the focused bouquet of this terrific wine from that glass was like being smacked in the face. I was thunderstruck. I kept moving back and forth between the two glasses and was utterly staggered by the difference. The power of the Riedel glass to deliver the wine to the nose made me a believer for life.

Years before, I'd heard a Riedel engineer on the radio explaining the science behind the sizing and shaping of glasses for different types of wine. I was as skeptical as the sarcastic radio host. Even though I was a committed wine geek, I was resistant to the notion that one needed at least a few different styles of stemware to get the most out of wine. After my encounter with the vinum chianti/zin glass, I was hooked.

The only drawback is having to buy six, which may be more than some people need. If you do a bit of searching on the web, you'll find some retailers who offer these glasses singly. If you love chianti and/or zinfandel (red zinfandel, that is), do yourself a favor and try one of these glasses. You'll never go back!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Zinfandels
Riedel labels this glass for Chianti and Chardonnay, and for both, it's great. But for Zinfandels, especially high end ones, it can't even hold a candle to a standard Bordeaux glass.

I'm a big fan of Riedel's Vinum line, but have learned that following their labels for these glasses is a good idea.If you like big California zins (and I do), then these aren't the glasses for you. They thin out the smell, and even make the wines taste much smaller than they really are.If you want an all purpose glass for reds, try the Bordeaux or Burgundy glasses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Small for Red Wine Glasses
These glasses are good quality, and the shape is perfect for Zin or Chianti, but the glasses simply aren't big enough to allow for a decent volume of wine and room at the top of the glass to hold the nose.I love these glasses for white wine though. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Austria's Riedel is the world's premier manufacturer of wine glasses. Made of 24-percent lead crystal, the Vinum series of glasses are the first machine-made wine glasses to be developed uniquely for each type of wine. Since their introduction in 1986, these wine glasses have had a large influence on the wine culture.

The glasses in this set of six were specifically shaped to highlight the tannins in wines made from the Australian Shiraz variety of grape, such as Amarone, Blaufränkisch, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache, Hermitage Rouge, Malbec, Mourvèdre, Pinotage, Shiraz, and Syrah. The glass shape also provides balance to the intense flavor of this very concentrated wine. Each glass stands 9-1/4 inches high and holds 22-7/8 ounces of wine. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a fine glass for syrah or shiraz
The Riedel Vinum series of stemware is very good, and the syrah/Rhone glass is no exception. The size and shape of the bowl really do enhance the bouquets of Chateauneuf de Pape, Cornas, Gigondas, and other southern and northern Rhone wines, as well as Australian or Californian shiraz/syrah based wines. (I've also found it to be quite good for brunellos, and some sangiovese-grosso based super-Tuscans.

The only drawback is having to buy six, which may be more than some people need. If you do a little searching on the web, you'll find that these glasses are available singly from some retailers.

However, that said, this is not a bad glass for everyday use, if you prefer to have just one glass for red wine; I'd probably choose the Spiegelau vino grande magnum bordeaux glass for that purpose, but each to his own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A direct comparison will clinch the argument
We currently live in France, a country where wine is etched into the national consciousness. We invited some French friends over to compare Australian and French wines of the same grape varieties (chardonnay, cabernet, merlot), but didn't have enough Riedel glasses to go around. Some of us were consistently rating wines lower - and then we realised that they had the non-Riedel glasses. A quick tour of the table with the same wine in the two types of glass convinced everybody of the merits of this glassware. A TIP ON WASHING: one pain is the need to hand-wash these glasses. A sommelier gave us the tip that to avoid breaking Riedels while washing, do not hold the stem to turn the glass while cleaning it. Hold the whole bowl with one hand, while using a wash cloth with the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing else will do....
I attended Tulsa Chef Fest 2002 in November and attended a Riedel conducted seminar sampling a series of wines from around the world. I was skeptical but after the seminar I am rabid convert preaching the word. The effect of these glasses on wine is simply amazing. In the subsequent couple of weeks my wife and I purchased several of the Vinum series - "Bordeaux", "Chablis" (Chardonnay), "Sauvignon Blanc" and "Syrah". We will be adding more in time. The Syrah glasses are particular effective at concentrating the nose of the Australian and South African wines we have already enjoyed. Your satisfaction is guaranteed and the price, even at full retail, is worth every penny for the years you will enjoy with this superb glassware. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If, when asked to enumerate your favorite after-dinner beverages, you find yourself listing port, then you will cherish Riedel's Vinum series port glass. Austrian glassmaker Riedel has built a reputation based on the premise that the tongue is divided into four zones, each recognizing either sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, or acidity, and that by changing a glass's size and shape, it can be perfectly attuned to a particular wine's stylistic nuances. With this glass, Riedel has set its sights on the rich high-alcohol classics from Portugal. With its elegant, barely fluted teardrop design, the Vinum port glass serves to enhance the wine's floral, raisiny aromatics while mitigating any alcohol burn to the nose. In doing so, the Vinum port glass is sure to become indispensable after all fine meals. --Tony Mason ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Oh boy, you guys are hilarious.I didn't even notice the logo on the bottom of the glass until I read your 'complaints' about it. .These glasses are great for the ports for which they are designed, other sweet wines, and the occasional spirit as well.I broke one just cleaning with a cloth, though, so only 4 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why advertise?
OK...
Got all excited about finally buying Riedel wine glasses. They are on sale.I am opening the box and.... RIEDEL is etched in frost in big letters on the underside of the base. What the heck?I am returning these. When I am paying this kind of money on glassware, I do not want a cheap logo on them.If they had put a discreet "R" or something, that would be different. This is just plain tacky.Such a shame as the glass otherwise looks good, although I do feel a ridge on the stem as someone else did.I suspect this is why they are on sale, as I doubt they were meant to be frosted this way. What a dissapointment...

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice but Please...
Ok, so Riedel Vinum Port Glasses are in fact beautiful, I certainly don't dispute that. When I saw them in the store I thought, "that's exactly what I'm looking for." $21 a piece ($85 for six or whatever it is), a little steep but I'll bite the bullet and get 'em. Then I picked them up. Why would someone design such a beautiful glass (or anything for that matter) and insist on putting their name on it. Tacky. I don't advertise at my dinner table. As a professionally trained chef I recommend going for the official port glass, authorized by the IVP - Instituto do Vinho do Porto and designed by world acclaimed Portuguese architect Siza Vieira. <$37. I believe they ship from Europe so it may take a few to get them here in the states...mine are on the way. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Austrian glassmaker Riedel has established itself as an industry leader in the manufacture of fine crystal stems for the discriminating wine lover. With several lines of wineglasses at several price points, Riedel brings its overriding philosophy--that the tongue is divided into zones, and that by directing specific wines to specific lingual zones by means of alterations to the size and shape of the glass, added sensory dimension can be mined from the wine--to the marketplace. The Gourmet glass is an all-purpose, come-one-come-all, all-wines-welcome vessel manufactured--as all Vinum are--in full 24% lead-oxide crystal. There are some 19 models in the Vinum series alone, each designed to showcase something different: fruit, acid, Bordeaux, Burgundy. With its short stem and capacious tapering bowl, no. 416/21 serves as an affordable, utilitarian, easy-care entrée--a sort of "baby's first Riedel" welcoming to any wine, be it red, white, or rosé. --Tony Mason ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great everyday wine glass
This glass is not really ideal for any wine, but it's a great everyday glass for everyday use, and it's an excellent tasting glass. While you'll want to pull out your special, grape-specific glasses for those special bottles, this glass is excellent for getting the most out of everyday wines with a minimum of fuss. They fit in the top rack of most dishwashers and are very durable.(I've used them for the past 5 years.) Plus, when you are drinking that special bottle from your special glasses, it makes a very nice water glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Water
Having NO idea why the below reviews mention that these are made in France... They are NOT they are from Austria. However these aren't actually made by Riedel. They are made 'for' Riedel.Wonderful to use for sparkling water. Would not use for wine.Riedel is the leading wine glass manufacturer.Buy the correct wine glass for the wine. You will be amazed. The glass DOES make a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Red/Gourmet Glass
Yes, the stem is short.Yes, if you have a big nose, it may get caught. And worst of all, they do come from France, which is a very good reason not to buy them.BUT that being said, you will not find a more pleasant, delicate glass to hold or sip from in this price range.More importantly, they fit into the upper level of the dishwasher, their single most important attribute. And if you break one or two or three, no tears, throw away the pieces and buy a new ones. Now that you cannot say about Waterford. ... Yeah, in retrospect it probably was wishful thinking to hope that Riedel--the Austrian glassworks whose innovations in stemware shape and design have enabled serious wine drinkers to get more bang from their Bordeaux, more Shiraz pizzazz --could work alcoholic alchemy on the martini. They can shorten the bowl of one glass so Sauvignon Blanc hits the tongue just so, broaden the mouth of the Burgundy stem to accentuate the dusty fruit nose, flare the lip of a singlemalt whiskey vessel to disperse floral notes. Yet even Riedel's model 416/77, with its classically elegant conical cocktail styling, can't scrub the bathtub ring off of a cheap gin. They make a little jewel of a martini glass, but not even Riedel can make a Sapphire from cubic zirconia booze. --Tony Mason ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T ORDER THIS FROM AMAZON!!!!
Unless you want to wait over a month to get your product, don't bother placing an order for the Riedel Vinum Martini glasses through Amazon. The shipping reads the set will ship in 1-2 weeks. I ordered my set on Sept. 5 and they still haven't shipped. Not very truthful to customers, in my opinion. I would love to tell you if the glasses are any good or not, but Amazon seems to be holding mine hostage. I will come back with a review of them as soon as I receive them, but please keep in mind it might not be until 2004...

4-0 out of 5 stars Old school martini glasses
At 5 ounces and change, these glasses are about right for a strong drink.Given the conical shape, you either need to have the balance of a tightrope walker or leave some space at the top. It's not uncommon to find 10 ounce martini glasses these days, but the larger size leads to warm drinks and inebriated drinkers. The larger glasses are also much harder to balance on tables or in your hand.Speaking of balance, I find the Riedel stems a little tall for my taste; I like a little more Thin Man and a little less James Bond in my martini glass shape.

As these are crystal, be careful washing them.Abrasive scrubby pads, the dishwasher, or even gritty towels will leave them scratched.

Martini tip I learned at my current job's cocktail parties:Dip the glasses in water and freeze in the freezer.Freeze your favorite gin (or vodka or whatever) in the freezer (the aim is to make it viscous when poured).Chill the vermouth and olives (or twist) in the fridge. When ready to serve, drop in olive, then vermouth (to cover the olive in my opinion, but it's your call) and finally gin.Stir (the classic technique, despite James Bond's heresy) and voila, a perfectly chilled martini with a minimum of hassle.

5-0 out of 5 stars uncertain satisfaction
The quality of the product was excellent and the picks were charming. As I was shining one of the glasses the stem broke at the base of the glass. Now I have anincomplete set. I am willing to pay for a single glass to complete my set or will except one on the chance it was faulty. ... Read more

Austria's Riedel is the world's premier manufacturer of wine glasses and, with this set of four brandy snifters, the company makes a foray into designing glasses for other beverages. Like the wine glasses in Riedel's Vinum series, these snifters are made of 24-percent lead crystal. The bulbous balloon-style bowl on each glass is specifically shaped for drinkers to cup the bottom and warm the brandy or cognac with one hand. Coupled with the narrower rim on the glass, the bowl is also designed to waft the liquor's aroma to the nose with each sip. Each glass stands 6 inches high and holds a copious 29-5/8 ounces of brandy or cognac; however, it is customary to pour just a few ounces at a time for sipping. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cognac Snifter
I purchased these glasses for a special occasion. They are a great glass for celebrating.Like other Reidel glasses, they are light and enjoyable to drink out of.We also have the 416/71 and for cognac I'll take this glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snap 'em up before they're gone
Riedel has discontinued these snifters. For Cognac (and I suppose that goes for Armagnac and other brandies), Riedel's now suggesting the "Hennesy Cognac" glasses, code 416/71, which look like their port glasses with flared rims.If you love snifters and don't care if the trendy oenophiles turn up their noses, go ahead and get a case of these.Personally, I like nothing better than to roll cognac around in a snifter after dinner. Like the other Vinum glasses, the brandy snifters are grandly scaled, wonderfully balanced and gorgeously proportioned.None of the nose-stuck-in-the-bowl problem that you get with some snifters. ...
