    Editorial Review

The six glasses in this set have outrageously wide brims (4-1/2inches in diameter!), which make them the perfect recipients of saltjust before they receive a margarita blend from the voluptuous pitcherthat completes this tequila-centric set. Such wide brims also mean youcan secure lime slices to the glasses while leaving plenty of sippingroom to prevent nose and lime collisions. The pitcher holds 96 liquidounces--ample for enough ice cubes to keep the second roundchilled--and its spout is protected by a guard to keep cubes in the pitcher. Thestemmed glasses stand 6 inches high. Pitcher and glasses are made ofmedium-thick glass so wrists are spared an undue burden inMargaritaville, and the glass is clear so the margaritas' brilliant, pale color can shine without distraction. Pitcher and glasses aredishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon impresses me yet again!
Ok for $9.99 you just cannot pass up this set!! It arrived to my door as perfect as it looked in the pictures. The packaging was excellent!!

For the price the seam everyone keeps mentioning doesn't bother me one bit!!

Bottom line is they look great and at that price I won't cry if someone accidentally breaks one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bargain for a really cool set!
I bought this glasses/pitcher set after reading the reviews. The bulk of the negative ones mentioned the packaging wasn't great, and as a result, they often arrived damaged.Well, I can see why they'd say the packaging is bad--the lack of padding was alarming.I guess I lucked out with mine. But the good part:Amazon will take back damaged products. You don't have to pay for the return shipping, and the whole process takes under a week.Yay, customer service!
If you're looking for a last minute gift, don't get it because it might get damaged. But if you're looking for a present for yourself, or a present for a couple months in the future, you absolutely cannot do any better than this little Margarita pitcher/glasses set.It looks a *lot* more expensive than $10 and is sure to impress anyone who enjoys pretty drinks.I'm probably going to buy like 10 of them and distribute them to everyone at Christmas, their birthdays, etc.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
Wow, the price has come down.I bought the set when it was 15 and for the price the glasses are great. The glasses are only 9 ounces so they don't hold too much liquid and when full they are very easy to spill since they are so wide rimmed at the top.Other than that for the price you can't beat this deal. ... Nintendo 64 Console with Two Controllers: Atomic Purple

    Editorial Review

Nintendo first dabbled in video games during the industry's early years of the mid-'70s. Generations of successful gaming console releases through the years led to the much-hyped 1996 launch of Nintendo 64, a system that represented a giant evolutionary leap in video game technology. Within the first three days of launch, hundreds of thousands of gamers hunkered down with Mario 64, considered by many to be one of the greatest video games ever created. Even today, the system's excellent design continues to host an ever-expanding library of breakthrough games.

Nintendo 64's popularity among younger gamers is no surprise. Well-respected games featuring such long-lived and much-loved personalities as Mario (of arcade classic Donkey Kong fame), Zelda, and Banjo-Kazooie are easy to learn and offer enormous replay value. But times are a' changin' and the system's ever-growing library of titles has expanded into every genre of games imaginable, including games better suited for older gamers. In fact, some of the most acclaimed--in some cases, groundbreaking--games available on any platform today are packed onto N64's old-school cartridges.

Under the system's hood, its appeal to the young certainly didn't produce a less mature gaming machine. On the contrary, the 64-bit system boasts impressive graphics, stereo sound, and numerous accessory enhancements, including a high-resolution pack that boosts graphics to awe-inspiring resolutions.

Start your library with Goldeneye 007, Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and Star Wars: Episode One Racer--these titles represent a decent start to any N64 cartridge library.

With the recent launch of Sega's Dreamcast system, Nintendo 64 is being left behind as the leader in video game technology. And with newer game systems featuring CD-based games, the system's expensive cartridge format is proving itself an archaic and unconventional storage format. But, at a sub-$110 recommended retail price for a console with two controllers, innovative accessory enhancements and a great library of games keep the system's rabid fan base satisfied, if not eager for Nintendo's next evolutionary step. --Eric Twelker ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Nintendo that didn't have a fair go
Nintendo will never be out-done, just out-priced.

Nintendo started off making small hand held electroic games before creating the 8 bit system in the 80's. And when they released the Super Nes they had the 2 greatest home video game systems of the day. Sega never stood a chance because they rushed things just to compete with nintendo, where as nintendo took there time when releasing systems to make sure they where the best they could be. Only the people whose mothers bought them a Sega instead of a NES or SNES where the ones who would defend the Sega systems. But the segas where slow, graphics wernt as good and the sound was as bad as the game play handling.

Nintendo had completly beaton Sega in the market of games. But sega brought out an attachment for the Genises/Mega drive that allowed you to hook on a CD ROM drive to the machine. And nintendo decided to make an even better one to attach to the SNES. If you look on the bottom of a SNES console, you will see where it would attach. The CD Rom for SNES was being developed by Nintendo and Sony. But arguments arose between Sony and Nintendo and Sony seperated themselves from Nintendo and went solo on the project that eventualy became the Playstation!

The playstation was only twice as powerfull as the SNES. The snes was 16 bit, the PS was 32 bit. So ninetendo developed a 64 bit system, twice as powerfull as the playstaion, better graphics, better controll, and better potentiol.

But when the 64 was released, it did not get the fair attention it should have. Why? Because of the CD's Sony used. Not because they where better, not because they where slower, not because they where more fun...no... it was because people where buying them ripped / copied / burnt / bootlegged for a small price. And this still goes on today. That was the biggest reason why Sony was having more succsess then nintendo. Because those CD rom games where able to be copied and the cartridge of the nintendo was not.

The PS games only surpassed with slightly better sound, the 64 could play high quality sound, but it was up the games developer on wether or not to use up space on the game with sound or not. That is about the only advantage the PS had, sound, particuly just music. Some people say the controllers of the PS where better then the N64, but I preffer the 64, it did take some time to adjust to it, but that is personaly taste rather then anything.

The nintendo 64 suffered a blow when more game developers wouldnt make games for the 64 anymore because it was easier to put them on a CD and develop them that way, then to program them for cartridges. So, that is not nintendos fault, that is the game developers fault for being lazy and just wanting to make quick games instead of decent and good games.

Nintendos team called RARE where the ones who always pushed the boundry on games. Just like they did with Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, they broke new ground by not just using the full potintiol of the system, but by finding ways to go beyond it's full capabilty! They released one of the best games on the 64 called "Golden Eye". The James Bond game was the 1st to use the full potentioal of the 64's capability. The game is amazing and still hard to beat by todays standards. The game did not even need the expansion pack the 64 soon offered.

The best games where coming from the game developers who put the effort into making the great games, and the playstaion never had anything as fun to play as the 64 offered. The graphics where so much smoother, the game play was so much more responsive and the fun was there. One of the first games I compared was WWF ATTITUDE. And pretty much like I said, the PS version took longer to load, wasnt as responsive, the graphics where horriblly blocky, and the only thing that was better was it had more sounds from the commentators. And maybe some of the entrance themes where longer. But apart from that, nothing (maybe video footage) but that was never apart of what you where playing which is what counted and the PS was the thumbs down, but because of people able to buy copied games, the PS became popular that new comers to the sytem THOUGHT it was the better system. It isnt.

These days the battle goes on between Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft. But I know for sure, Nintendo will always supply quality games, games worth playing, games using full potentiol of the systems capability, and most important...respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice thing to have
THIS N64 IS COOL BECAUSE IT HAS A PLAIN CONTROLER AND A NICE CONTROLER PLUS THE SYSTEM OF N64 AND IF YOU KEEP BUYING GAMES YOU WILL END UP WITH A WHOLE COLLECTION OF GAMES ANDA SYSTEM OF N64. SOME OF THE GAMES FOR THE N64 ARE THINGS LIKE THIS: SUPER SMASH BROS., HEY YOU PIKACHU, STAR FOX, PAPER MARIO, SUPER MARIO 64,AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

    5-0 out of 5 stars N64 ROCKS!!!!
I love the Nintendo 64. The N64 has some of the best games like super mario 64 and the legend of zelda the ocrina of time. If you like the older systems, then you need to pick up a N64 because it is awesome!! ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I was looking forward to this book as the reviews had been good but was profoundly disappointed. It read like a gossip column and was very self-centered in a boring way.I finally started scanning it very fast just to see if it ever improved - it didn't. If you enjoy cocktail parties where everyone is climbing the social ladder and trying to out do each other, you might enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Choice Guide
This book "made" our trip.I was reluctant to visit an area I knew little about but several friends recommended Orgasmic Days to me and I took the chance.I adored reading the book before my husband and I left for France and used it multiple times during our trip.We stayed at the conveniently located Hotel Diana, met Mimi at the wondrful restaurant, Chez Gianni, in Monte Carlo, and found the charming Serge in the Biot Glass Gallery. All the advice gleaned from this book was excellent. My friends were right to be so insistent.I'm delighted to share my book experience with all interested Amazon users.I would like to add that this book is primarily a guide book and should be reviewed as such, not as a novel.I adore it! Many thanks to Barbara Keller.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly written
I'm sure Ms. Keller had a wonderful time in the South of France. But this book conveys none of its splendor. She should get an editor to tame her adjectives and adverbs.

In an attempt to capture the effect on the soul of being in the South of France, her prose flattens the whole experience to a loud fortissimo. The result: She sounds like a screaming American. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Diamond Collection consists of five Marilyn Monroe films plus the documentary The Final Days. Bus Stop (1956) stars Monroe as a singer who finds herself trapped at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) was built around a trio of female stars, Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable, who play friends who come up with a plan to find and marry rich men. Monroe plays an ambitious showgirl in 1954's There's No Business Like Show Business, which brings together two giants of Broadway, Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin, to celebrate the glories that were vaudeville. Howard Hawks's 1953 musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes stars Monroe and Jane Russell as friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (including Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit, and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The Seven Year Itch (1955) is a memorable laugh machine. As a married man left alone during a hot summer, Tom Ewell shows off crack timing matched by Monroe's zesty comic flair, and the scene in which her white dress is blown skyward by a passing subway train has entered the encyclopedia of great movie images.

In The Final Days, producer-director Patty Ivins chronicles Monroe's final, aborted feature film, Something's Got to Give, which was ultimately shut down after the star was dismissed from the production. Beyond Monroe's fragile emotional and physical health, this well-crafted profile examines the financial crisis facing her studio as well as the mounting frustration of meticulous director George Cukor and his cast, including costar Dean Martin, as Monroe's absences drove the shoot over budget. The documentary concludes with a 40-minute reconstruction of footage completed for the feature, which would subsequently be reshot as a vehicle for Doris Day and James Garner, Move Over, Darling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn was the sexy Lucy!
I have seen all these movies many times. I'm so happy they are all on a nice dvd collection. Marilyn shines as always in everything. Show Business is the least of my favorites but Marilyn does several great songs in this , well worth seeing her sing "After you get what you want" & "Heat Wave". The Final Days was really interesting , to see marilyn's last movie footage, that was never finished.I don't see the the "drug daze" as some have mentioned here". I think she looked great and seemed to have it all together other than forgeting a few lines and showing up late. It leaves alot to speculate as to what was really going on with Marilyn in her last days. Somethings Got to Give if finsihed would have been a cute 60's comedy, much like Doris Days films. Marilyn was on her way to becoming agreat comedian..

Add "Some Like it Hot", "Misfits", and "Prince and the Showgirl" "River of No Return" to this collection, and you will have the best of Marilyn's films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn At her Best
I particularly enjoyed Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The 7 Year Itch. One has Marilyn singing Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend and The other's got the famous subway, skirt up in the air scene. In Gentlemen, she's fun and wise, not a dumb blonde at all and in The 7 Year Itch, she comes across as a genuine young woman who wants to boost Tom Ewell's morale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Fall In Love With A Dead Woman
I'll confine this review to the disc,"Marilyn Monroe: The Final Days", which does not seem to be available elsewise in the United States. That said...

James Ellroy fans (and homicide cops) will tell you: Don't fall in love with a dead woman. It's an occupational hazard of theirs, and they know it well; it leads to heartbreak, ulcers, early retirement, or eating a hollowpoint. This DVD may present you with a bit of insight-maybe a little more than you have in mind-as to this state of affairs.

"Something's Got To Give", a remake of a story as old as silent theatrical film, was to have been a quick and profitable moneymaking project for 20th-Century Fox, who were in serious economic straits over the massively overbudget production of 'Cleopatra". It starred Marilyn Monroe, Cyd Charisse, and Dean Martin, and became a quagmire of its own due to problems with Marilyn and director George Cukor. Eventually MM was fired, Dean Martin refused to work with her replacement Lee Remick, MM rehired and production rescheduled when Marilyn was found dead at her house, 8/05/1962. Of course that ended the movie: its footage was put in a vault, essentially unmolested for forty years.

In 1999, American Movie Classics paid to have the extant footage built out as far as it would go, making a release that is in essence an abruptly ending 37 minutes of what would have been a roughly 90 minute film. The film quality is superb and the scenes marvelous, including the famous swimming pool sequence which would have been the first nude scene in an American theatrical release, at least since the days of the Hays code (as it turns out that honor went to MM emulator Jayne Mansfield in 1963's 'Promises,Promises'.)

There's the tough part. Marilyn Monroe, at the age of 35, is in the best shape of her life and is absolutely magnificent in this footage. When the film ends abruptly and rolls memoriam credits-as if on a Moviola-you are seeing her on the last theatrical film shot of her in her life, the last day of her career, June 1, 1962. Her thirty-sixth birthday.

Nine weeks later, she was dead.

I'll spare the details, except to say that I've never met a ME or homicide officer who thinks it was suicide (and I deal with police officers and departments for a living.) If thinking about her doesn't bother you a little, you may be missing something. I can't put it any other way. If you're a lukewarm MM fan, you might really not want to watch this, because the game isn't necessarily worth the candle. If you don't get her at all, think you're 'stone to the bone'. or are a serious fan wanting to see all there is of Marilyn, this DVD will likely be one of the most important you have ever watched. ... No other Otis compilation quite satisfies the way the old double-LP best-of does, but never mind: any way you hear Redding's many great moments is a good one. The Very Best splits ballads and up-tempo stuff half-and-half, letting you hear the great one's humanity in every mood--the pile-driving rock of "Respect," the preaching fervor of "Try a Little Tenderness," the nascent reflection of "Dock of the Bay." A record collection with no Otis is a poor thing: here's yours. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars essential historical document
you should get this if you are even remotely interested in branching out your musical tastes. Also get his Live in Europe cd, which has most of the same songs, but more emphasis on his gravelly type voice. He comes across as a bit of a crooner on a few songs on here, but for the most part his voice is very raw. This should be a part of any music collection, along with the live album.I was happy to be able to get songs like "the dock of the bay" and "dreams to remember," both really good songs.I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forever Otis!
It was indeed tragic that we lost Otis at such a young age and at the height of a dynamic career. It's another shame, as I've read in the liner notes, that when he died the pop audience hardly knew him. It was that same old "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" that kept getting played and played. That's now his singature song for pop fans. For R&B fans, it's either "Try A Little Tenderness", check that out: starts real low and smooth and then builds and Otis really cuts loose, or there is the original "Respect". That song is hot stuff; it has a jumpy beat, dynamic bass and sax spots yet this song is so criminally ignored. Sure, Aretha hit it big with it, but let's give credit where it's due. The rest of this album rocks with a lot of soul. His duet with Carla Thomas on "Tramp" is here also with Carla criticizing Otis of his hobo looks. They should've done more duets together like Marvin and Tammi. Too bad the duet of "Knock On Wood" isn't on here, but on this it looks like the bigger of the two hits was chosen. Just hearing Otis will make you a soul/R&B fan instantly.

5-0 out of 5 stars "That girl took that song away from me!!!!
It was the summer of 1967.Otis Redding was in the midst of the performance of his life at Monterey International Pop Festival. What he was referring to of course was the way Aretha Franklin had turned his song "Respect" into one of the biggest hits of the year. His version topped out at #35 on the pop charts a couple of years earlier. But I digress.Otis Redding was just beginning to hit his stride as summer turned to autumn in 1967.This veteran performer had been around for a while. The fact is that up until this point he had made the Billboard Hot 100 a total of 19 times although his records usually ran out of gas somewhere in the middle of the chart. His tunes fared much better on the Soul/R&B charts where 8 of them had made it into the Top Ten.It is really difficult to understand why the man had not had greater commercial success up until this point. After taking a few months off Otis Redding returned to the studio in early December 1967.There he recorded a song he had co-written with Steve Cropper. Everyone thought it was a mistake. His wife hated it. Three days later Otis Redding was dead at 26, a victim of a tragic plane crash in Wisconsin.
When the story appeared in the newspaper I remember thinking to myself "Who is that?"And although I had been collecting records for about three years I had never heard of him.Despite his enormous talent Otis Redding had just not quite connected with general audiences. Less than two months later in January of 1968, Volt records released that tune his wife and friends hated so much."(Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay" went all the way to #1 on the Pop charts and remained there for a month.Everyone was now beginning to realize just how talented this man had been. There are a few different Otis Redding collections around but I find this to be the best of the lot. You'll hear his version of tunes that went on to become hits by other artists like 1965's "I Can't Turn You Loose" and his dynamic version of the great blues standard "Try A Little Tenderness".In the meantime, you'll also enjoy the exhilirating work of the Stax/Volt house band who were undeniably at their peak during this time. For me other favorites on this compilation are the 1968 hit "The Happy Song (Dum-Dum") and Otis' high energy duet with Carla Thomas "Tramp".An informative 12 page booklet with interesting biographical information and chart data for each track is also included.Believe me you cannot go wrong with this one.Highly recommended. ... Janis Joplin made the blues her own. Though she didn't live to finish this album before her 1970 death from a heroin overdose, her intense passion and frantic cries of pain and ecstasy were enough to make Pearl one of the most memorable recordings of her era. Her band does fill up some vinyl with the instrumental "Buried Alive in the Blues," but it's the vocals that make this album worth hearing these many decades later. Listen to the tortured heartbreak of "Cry Baby" or the hopeful declarations of Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee" and understand why Joplin remains an essential, if tragic, figure in pop. This reissue of Joplin's final album includes four live bonus tracks recorded during the 1970 Canadian Festival Express Tour. --Steve Appleford ... Read more

Before the album was completed, she died of a drug overdose in 1970 when she was twenty seven. This was her First Number One album. "Get it while you can" is a Beautifull song. Recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, But What If?
Janis Joplin's PEARL is a great solo album that makes you wonder if it might have been even better if she had been able to finish all of her vocals before she died. The two best songs are "Move Over" and "Me And Bobby McGee", but there's plenty of other good stuff here, too. Get PEARL and CHEAP THRILLS together if possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars No need for mumbo-jumbo
I was attracted to this book for the very reason that so many people seem to dislike it: it's basic, simple, straight-forward. I lived in Asia for 5 years and have accumulated numerous feng shui books - and was completely turned off by the whole attitude that "real" feng shui knowledge and power is only for those who have "earned" it. I don't believe this, and neither does Karen. Her attitude is that the power to change your life is right there, and with some adjustments, you'll tap into it - all on your own, with no "masters" or years of study. While I respect those who can and do study, the fact is that feng shui is an accessible and simple philosophy, and I see nothing wrong with a book promoting that.

Another thing I like about this book is that it troubleshoots many situations, such as what to do if you live in a flat (as opposed to a house, which so many of us do) and what to do if part of your Prosperity, Family, Health and Fame corners fall outside your flat (as mine do, since I live in an "L"-shaped flat). Nowhere else have I seen such practical, real advice.

I walked through my flat with the book in one hand and I noticed that all areas of my life that are going well (Helpful Friends, Creativity, Career, Knowledge, Relationships) already have things that Karen recommends, so I left them alone, as she says. But the areas where I am stuggling (mentioned above) all fall outside my flat, specifically in a dirty, dusty, unheated general storage room across the hall, full of tables and dead flowers (this is my Prosperity corner, so no wonder I'm living from paycheque to paycheque) and in the stairwell outside. I can't do anything about the architecture of my building, but she gave me several ideas how to help the situation and make up for this lack of chi. I made the changes yesterday (I buried a purple pencil in the dirt floor of the storage room, for example, in hopes of nudging my Prosperity into action) and am hopeful that things will improve. I'll keep you posted!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Feng Shui
Karen Rauch Carter explains Feng Shui in simple to understand, humorous reading. This book literally changed my life. It is so inexpensive and at this point, so dog eared. Ü

If you're interested in Black Hat Sect Feng Shui, this is the book to start with. It explains Feng Shui in a way that makes it simple for even the slowest of us to understand and implement.

And as I said, it changed my life... got me out of the red in my checkbook, brought amazing opportunities into my life, promoted family harmony... just to name a few. I hit a bump in the road, I head back to my book and figure out a new cure. Works every time!

I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this book! I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I started doing small changes at first, and was amazed at the results I got. I tried some experiments, and so far, they have all worked. Every vacation I go on is sunny and nice, my Vice President sent me a huge compliment via email, etc. I encourage everyone to have a copy of this book to help have a happy, harmonious life.
Also other book that make a diference in my life is Sex and the perfect lover by Mabel Iam.

    Editorial Review

    Setting: London 1836

    Sensuality: 8

Successful novelist Amanda Briars buys herself a scandalous present to celebrateher 30th birthday. Of gentle birth, unwed, and still a virgin, she contractswith a well-known madam to deliver a lover to her home. When handsome publisherJack Devlin knocks on her door, it doesn't take him long to figure out thatAmanda thinks he's someone else entirely. Intrigued, he stops just short oftaking the lady's virginity, for he has other plans for the talented writer.

When she discovers Jack's true identity at a gathering of writers andpublishers, Amanda is first angry, then fascinated, as he is a powerful force inthe London publishing industry. Jack is determined to court Amanda not only topublish her novels, but also to lure her into his bed, and it isn't long beforethe two are deeply involved. But their path to happiness is strewn withstumbling blocks: Jack has a past that haunts him, while Amanda's family wouldbe hurt by a scandalous liaison.

Suddenly You is a lush, deeply romantic tale of two free spirits wholearn that they are, after all, susceptible to the binding ties of love. Thesetting provides readers with a different view of London society--the lives ofaffluent writers and artists rather than the world of the nobility--and afascinating look into the publishing industry in 1800s London. Once again,Kleypas has delivered a well-written, sensual novel that's sure to hit thebestseller lists. --Lois Faye Dyer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This is a fast paced, VERY sensual book that has very little conflict between the two main characters, which I love. I could not help but to like the hero and heroine immensely and the extreme feelings that the hero had for his lady. Loved it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not one of the best books I've read...
Okay, I bought the book in paperback. Then because I love Lisa Kleypas and I found SUDDENDLY YOU in hardback in a book club edition, I bought that as well.

Then I sat down to read the book. The story seems intriguing even though it starts out a little slow...and then gets slower and I lost interest.I thought the story would be great, she is a writer and he is a publisher...what could be better??

I don't know what went wrong with this story but I couldn't get into it at all!I wasn't interested in Amanda as the heroine OR Jack as our hero.Yet, somehow, I managed to finish the book.I guess what really nailed the lid in the coffin for me not liking (may be a spoiler...) SUDDENLY YOU is that Jack was younger than Amanda.I guess it was like the final attempt at making the story good, but it just didn't work for me.

UGH!NOT her best work, and I would avoid SUDDENLY YOU if you have never read a book by Lisa Kleypas. And if you have, well, I hope you aren't as disappointed as I was if you read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly sensual
She is past her prime, a resigned spinster who has never experienced a man's touch. She has lived a rather uneventful life, having spent the last precious years of her youth caring for her sick parents. So a week before her thirtieth birthday, celebrated novelist Amanda Briars decided to give herself a nice present: a night with a man. So she goes to the notorious Madam Bradshaw and hires a prostitute. On the night of her birthday, she ushers a man into her home thinking he was the prostitute sent by the madam. Unbeknownst to her, Jack is good friends with Madam Bradshaw and decides to play matchmaker upon learning of his desire to meet Amanda.

Jack Devlin is a ruthless publisher with a painful past. When he acquires Amanda's very first novel, he pays her a visit in order to talk business with her. When he knocks on her door, he is surprised at the welcome he receives from her. But after realizing that she has mistaken him for the man she paid for, he couldn't help but play along having felt an instant attraction to her. But at the last minute, he stops; uncertain of the strong feelings he suddenly has for her and not wanting to deceive her.

A week later, Amanda attends a party and was aghast, for there in front of her stands Jack, the very man who has haunted her dreams for the past week. When she learns that he is the unscrupulous John T. Devlin, the publisher that she has avoided meeting, she is outraged and even more so when Jack blackmails her into agreeing to publish her first novel. Worried that her reputation would be in tatters, she reluctantly agrees and they start discussing business the very next day.

Amanda is unsettled by Jack's sexual magnetism, while Jack finds himself incapable of controlling his reaction to her, for she is a refreshing change from the other women he had ever known. Soon, they embark on an affair and Amanda is both shocked and amused by her lack of shame around him, for her actions were something she once only dared to write about in her novels. And the more time they spent together, the more they become perturbed by the strong feelings that develop between them.

In this sensual Victorian novel, we see how two independent people find passion and love by overcoming their vulnerabilities and learning to be accepting of themselves. Although Amanda has carved a respectable life without sacrificing her independence and bowing to the dictates of convention, she is plagued by insecurities over her plainness and finds it hard to accept that a man like Jack could possibly want her. As for Jack, he must overcome the stigma of his youth and illegitimacy before he can truly give in to his feelings for Amanda.

Suddenly You is an exciting novel brimming over with sensuality and wit. It features steamy love scenes without being vulgar. A novel that is guaranteed to hook you from the very first page, it is a refreshing change from your usual historical featuring beautiful ingénues and aristocratic rogues. I liked how Amanda is straightforward and refuses to conform to society and Jack's tenderness towards her is something to be cherished.

I do wish that more emphasis were given to the emotions and depth of feelings between the characters. I suppose that having read Dreaming of You and Then Came You, I was expecting something more. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this novel so don't let this minor quibble stop you from reading this. ... Read more
