5-0 out of 5 stars Bettie Page, the world's greatest pinup
I bought this book for my husband's birthday last year; he has always thought Bettie Page was great, and he is the one who enlightened me about her.As an artist, I was drawn to her style and unpretentiousness, and have drawn her twice so far.

This book is well-written and leads the reader through Bettie's life; from her start and to her present day in a respectful and fascinating manner.I came away from this book understnanding the appeal she had to men, and wanting to draw her portraits over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate tribute and book on Bettie Page
There was one another 50's icon who rivals Marilyn in popularity today--Bettie Page.True, she didn't make any A-movies, but like Marilyn, embodied that woman who drew a fine line between good girl/bad girl and crossed the lines as easily as one drank Coca-Cola.Unlike Marilyn, Bettie survived, but like Marilyn, her legend lives on for one simple reason:she dropped out of sight in 1957 following the fall of Irvin and Paula Klaw by the Kefauver Committee on indecency and pornography and refused to have herself be photographed as she is now. Thus, she is remembered as she was back then. And as her life has become simpler, she values her privacy. She says so as much in the hand-written foreword, at the same time surprised and honoured that so many people are interested in her.Karen Essex and James L. Swanson book is a great place to start for those curious about Bettie Page.Basically, it's a biography accompanied by lots and lots of colour and b&w photos, many of them topless. There are two of them which has her completely nude. She also posed for countless magazine covers and photographers.Art Amsie's photos are the best of the lot here.Bunny Yeager is touched on briefly, but that woman has a book on herself so...Looking at the early Bettie, before she became a pin-up from 1947, is also quite a revelation. She is still beautiful, but in an ordinary way, like a typical girl growing up in 1940's America. There is clearly a dualism going on here. There's the pretty wholesome girl in the bathing suit or maybe not, and then there's the darker leatherbound fetish girl, be she receiver or giver. That latter half led to her downfall. The point also was that she enjoyed her work, mainly the lighter beach stuff. You can see it in those twinkling eyes and smile of hers. The last section of the book features models who have been influenced by her, be they in clothes or just looking like her.Of the lookalikes, Eva Herzigova, Debi Mazar, and Janice Dickinson have got it down to the bangs, (it's the bangs that did it for Bettie, after all), long black hair, and prominent eyebrows.Apart from being one of fantasy artist Olivia's favourite subjects, Bettie's images appear on album covers by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and the David Lee Roth Band. Her three videos, Teaserama, where she acts opposite stripper legend Tempest Storm, Varietease, and Strip-O-Rama have come out. She'll live on, no doubt about it.Anyone interested in Bettie Page-start with this book. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK IN EVERY WAY
This is the ultimate book on Bettie Page. This book is for every true Bettie fan.Even contains an introduction from Bettie herself.

Editorial Review

When people think of James Dean, they probably think first of the troubled teen from Rebel Without a Cause: nervous, volatile, soulful, a kid lost in a world that does not understand him. Made between his only other starring roles, in East of Eden and Giant, Rebel sums up the jangly, alienated image of Dean, but also happens to be one of the key films of the 1950s. Director Nicholas Ray takes a strikingly sympathetic look at the teenagers standing outside the white-picket-fence '50s dream of America: juvenile delinquent (that's what they called them then) Jim Stark (Dean), fast girl Judy (Natalie Wood), lost boy Plato (Sal Mineo), slick hot-rodder Buzz (Corey Allen). At the time, it was unusual for a movie to endorse the point of view of teenagers, but Ray and screenwriter Stewart Stern captured the youthful angst that was erupting at the same time in rock & roll. Dean is heartbreaking, following the method acting style of Marlon Brando but staking out a nakedly emotional honesty of his own. Going too fast, in every way, he was killed in a car crash on September 30, 1955, a month before Rebel opened. He was no longer an actor, but an icon, and Rebel is a lasting monument. --Robert Horton ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Special Editing" Full of Extras
You can read dozens, if not hundreds, of reviews of "Rebel Without a Cause" here and elsewhere on the internet. In a nutshell, this is a story about the emerging "teenager" in America, post-World War II; troubled, lonely, dangerous and hard to understand. James Dean plays Jim, the new guy in town, the outisder. Even though the cover and movie poster makes him seem dangerous and bad, Jim really isn't like that. He's rather soft, shy, unable to fit in with those his age. Natalie Wood plays the bad girl next door who, like Jim, is misunderstood. Her father turns a cold shoulder to her, leaving her with the only option of acting out in order to get his attention.

What's so different about the "Special Edition?" Unlike the original DVD/VHS release a few years back, this one has extras galore. It's released as part of the James Dean collection. So, it has a lot of extra features that focuses on James Dean the actor. It doesn't stop there. It has a near-40 minute long feature from those who produced the movie that explains how it came about and the different aspects and production points. So, in total, you're getting:

*Commentary by Douglas L. Rathgeb: If you've seen the movie, then you can simply click this on in the menu and listen to this author, who wrote a book about the movie a while ago, talk about a lot of behind the scenes, "did you know...," actor and casting secrets behind the movie. He speaks constantly and tells you just about all you'd ever want and need to know about the movie, including where it differs from the book and he even tries to explain some of the plot holes that may hold the movie back.

*Theatrical trailor: The original trailor to the movie. It's rather long, considering it's a trailor, and is basically a montage of scenes from the film, some that may reveal some of the best scenes before they are seen.

~DISC 2~
*"Rebel Without a Cause: Defiant Innocents" documentary: Long, about 40 minutes. It's informative and again, reveals some things you may not know about the film and answers some questions. I personally found it to drag on a bit and didn't really get interested until the end when they talked about how Dean's death impacted the film.

*"James Dean Remembered" documentary: This is the best feature, in my opinion, on the disc. This was a documentary filmed 20 years after James Dean's death. Sammy Davis jr., Natalie Wood and numerous others sit down and talk about Dean, as they remembered him. There were anecdotes about James Dean's encounter with Marlon Brando, his alleged homosexual life, his odd behavior, his humor, the way he acted. It includes a lot of scenes from his three films, as well as a few other TV show appearances. This feature is nearly an hour long but had me hooked the minute it began.

* 3 Warner Bros. segments: These are little "behind the scenes" bits that feature Natalie Wood, Jim B. (plays the father, perhaps most known for his role as Thurston H. on 'Gilligan's Island'), and James Dean's perhaps famous "don't drive too fast" segment he filmed while shooting "Giant." These are obviously mostly staged and scripted, but that's how they were done back int he 1950s.

* Additional Scenes without Sound: The good point is that you get more scenes from this film that were cut out. You also get to see a lot more of Natalie Wood and James Dean. The alternate ending is also included (partially at least). There are also over a dozen additional scenes. The bad? There are no sounds. Not even on the color shots. They are all silent, tedious, and many of them weren't really additional scenes, they seemed to be extra footage. Do we really want to watch 8 long scenes of people leaving or hanging around the Planetarium? Or James Dean, who can barely be seen, just gazing up at some big contraption in the Planetarium? Or watch an intense scene like the alternate ending ... without any sound? Or kids driving their cars into the school's parking lot? This was nice, we all love additional scenes, but it was rather pointless.

*Rare Screen Test: Basically, the main three, Wood, Mineo, Dean, as they were in the mansion toward the end of the film. It's okay, I didn't find it that different from what was in the film.

*Wadrobe Tests: The actors are trying on different coats, standing around, trying not to look so stuffy and attempting to be friendly toward one another. It's fun to watch James Dean kid around, but that's just about it from this feature.

As for how the film itself looks, it's great. The transfer, reportedly new, is wonderful. You'll see, in the opening main menu and in features, the original film as it was seen in theaters; blurry, muted colors, dark, gritty. None of that here. It's vivid, intense, modern looking. The soundtrack for the most part is good. I'd say the film is at it's best in this Special Edition format.

So, buy this edition. More features, a better film quality, more bang for the buck. Definately worth your time and attention. Everyone should own this piece of Hollwyood history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mainstream View of Important Film
Rebel without a Cause showcases the performances of James Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo in a classic story of teenagers disconnected from their parents in the mid-1950s.There are many famous scenes and lines, all discussed in other reviews.

The current 2-disc special edition has excellent picture and sound and has a good set of extra features, including a commentary, featurettes, and making-of shots.

Queer theorists have tried to make something of the relationships of Dean, Mineo, and their characters. The only mention of this alternative analysis comes in the commentary track, where the suggestion that Plato (Mineo) has a homoerotic attraction to Jim (Dean) is dismissed because the production code would not stand for it and because Plato is more straight-forwardly viewed as wanting Jim to be a big brother or father. This is the mainstream view. Those wanting to explore gay interpretations will have to await another release.

Regardless, this film influenced family values and dress standards for years to come and is a must-see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebel Without a Cause
"Rebel Without A Cause" is one of the finest films ever created. The story is about a troubled youth that seeks redemption and a sense security through his family, but when they fail to do that he seeks comfort through friendship. James Dean, Natalie Woods, and the rest of the cast are great in this film, so it's no wonder why this movie is a classic. With great scenes like the chicken run car race or the arguements James has with his parents, you'll never want to turn off the T.V. The direction for this film seemed very powerful and had you in suspense throughout the film. One moment you'll be sad at some of James Dean's struggles in the movie, but then you'll be happy at some of his more happy scenes in the film. I think many of today's youth can identify with Dean's character, so making it that much more of a powerful film. Although the film does seem a bit paced at time, it doesn't ruin the experience. Overall, if you like movies, then you'll love this one.

Don't Bother to Knock

Editorial Review

Marilyn Monroe's first bona fide starring role came in the taut, stripped-down film noir Don't Bother to Knock. She plays a recently institutionalized, none-too-stable babysitter, awkwardly tending a little girl in a Manhattan hotel. Richard Widmark, jilted by the songbird (Anne Bancroft) in the hotel lounge ("The female race is always cheesing up my life," he pouts), puts the make on the lonely blonde in room 809, to his regret. The picture benefits by not being a "Marilyn" movie, but just a good little thriller with, as it happens, a terrific performance by the future superstar. Monroe's childlike distraction eerily suits her rattled character, a misfit who can't distinguish her tragic past from the confusing present. Kudos to Daniel Taradash (From Here to Eternity), whose script contains a collection of tart slang that neatly captures the noir feel--all without leaving the boundaries of the hotel. --Robert Horton ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother to babysit
Is that really Marylin? Such versatility! Spectacular, unexpected plot and performance!

5-0 out of 5 stars "You're a gal with a lot of variations."
When an affluent society couple staying in a large New York hotel mention to bellhop, Eddie (Elisha Cook Jr.) that they need a babysitter for their daughter, Bunny, he suggests his niece, Nell (Marilyn Monroe). Nell arrives at Room 809 and she looks neat, and clean, but there's something about her distracted manner that should ring alarm bells for any parent. Unfortunately, Mr. And Mrs. Jones float off for the evening leaving Nell in charge of Bunny while they attend a dinner in one of the hotel's dining rooms.

Lounge singer Lyn Leslie (Anne Bancroft) is performing her usual evening routine when her beau, airline pilot, Jeb Towers (Richard Widmark) arrives. Lyn has decided to break up with Jeb because he's cold, and he doesn't "have an understanding heart." Frustrated and irritated, Jeb goes back upstairs to his hotel room. Once in his room, Jeb spots Nell across the way, and on an impulse, he decides to call her and invite himself over.

The role of Nell allows Marilyn Monroe to really show her talent as an actress. She's just amazing in this role, and if you haven't seen the film, watching Monroe's facial expressions will give you new respect for her talents. Jeb imagines he's hit the jackpot when he finds this beautiful, lonely woman. When he sets eyes on Nell, he tells her, "you might have been a droopy looking job," and as far as he's concerned, he's there in a hotel room with a beautiful stranger to have a no-strings attached evening. Ironically, Jeb finds himself involved up to his neck. Loaded with great one-liners, the film grows increasingly tenser as Nell unravels before Jeb's eyes. Marilyn Monroe fans will love this film, and Widmark fans will be also pleased with his performance. Widmark does an excellent job of playing the irritated lover who wants to step on the rebound into another romance, but instead he has a pivotal experience of his lifetime--displacedhuman

3-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn's first big part
A young woman recently released from a mental institution (Marilyn Monroe) slips back into madness in the New York hotel where her uncle (Elisha Cook, Jr.) has found a babysitting job for her. This is an interesting little thriller, but not memorable enough to have survived the test of time had it not featured Monroe's first starring role.Although she is quite good, her part is underdeveloped. We really learn nothing about how she came to be as she is, and her illness is the stereotypical pathology of slipping into the past and pining for a lost love.A few scenes in which a child is endangered provoke some real suspense, and I can't help but wonder how it played for 50s audiences.Good viewing, but it fails to transcend its B-movie status./ ... Martinis aren't for everyone, but martini glasses are a must-have for anyone who entertains. Though the shape and balance of the glass makes the ideal, classic presentation for the timeless martini, these glasses are also perfect for Cosmopolitans, Manhattans, and a vast array of popular cocktails. Beyond beverages, martini glasses are also a trendy serving piece for appetizers such as shrimp cocktail or seafood ceviche. The elegantly designed glasses are made of crystal, though with everyday durability in mind. We recommend hand washing, just to be safe. --Cynthia Nims ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbroken & Beautiful!
No breakage problem here! The glasses were individually wrapped in tissue AND bubblewrap. The manufacturer's box was then bubblewrapped and placed in a larger Amazon box with air-cushions for further protection.I'd say Amazon has solved the breakage problem very well!

And what gorgeous martini glasses they are!Perfectly proportioned, heavy, and ring nicely when gently struck.Worth every penny and then some!

BTW, I got them next day for only $3.99 shipping thanks to Amazon Prime.I highly recommend it!

Here's my favorite Martini recipe to accompany these fine glasses:

2 oz Bombay Gin (no cheap substitutes, please!)
1 oz Martini & Rossi Extra Dry Vermouth
1 or 2 pemento-stuffed olives

Keep the gin in the freezer and the vermouth in the refridgerator so you don't have to pour them over ice in a shaker to cool them.Simply pour each into a Spieglau Vino Grande glass, add the olive (pick optional) and enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful glasses...why wouldn't they wrap them better
The other reviewers are too kind...what good are beautiful glasses if only 3 of 6 arrive unbroken...I just don't get it, why wouldn't they wrap them better. They are put in a box with dividers, with no more than one thin piece of wrapping paper around each one. I bought these as a wedding present for a friend...some gift, how embassasing to give him 3 martini glasses because the rest had been broken...

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful glasses, so elegance & sophisticated
I just received two sets today and was amazed how beautiful these glasses are.

Even though each glass has its own compartment, Spiegelau needs to do a better job in packing their glasses in the their own box. Each glass is only wrapped with a couple of thin sheets of paper and it is sit loosely in each compartment.Amazon's packaging is a little better but they need to mark outside "FRAGILE".A drop of the box and the glasses inside will break just like that.

All and all, I'm pretty happy with these glasses and can't wait to get the replacements.I want to entertain some friends with martinis before the summer is over. And because martini doesn't taste like a martini if it is not serviced in a martini glass. ... Read more
