Editorial Review

You have to open a lot of wine to justify doing it with a beautiful piece of machinery like this one, which weighs in at nearly 2 pounds. But the sommelier in you will love the glowing, slightly indented brushed steel of this serious bottle opener as much as the way the sheer weight screams quality. And there is something uniquely satisfying about the single smooth push-pull that cleanly extracts even the stubborn, fragile cork in that cobweb-covered bottle of Chateau Le Pin. It's also simplicity itself to remove the cork in one piece from the screw; no more grabbing it in your fist and twisting. A matching foil cutter, storage rack, and replacement screw are included. --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I dropped it!!
I bought this corkscrew for my husband two years ago and I'd be hard pressed to count (or admit) how many bottles of wine we have opened with it!Unfortunately, this past weekend we had a "Sullivan Reunion" and suffice it to say the opener was working non-stop.However, someone dropped it and the little top piece (like a small screw cap) that is directly below the upper handle snapped off and was lost.I have taken the screwpull to the hardware store to try and fit something else for that piece but to no avail. There are no replacement parts I've seen on line and until I can find one, the thing is useless.I'm open for suggestions!I just need that tiny piece that screws on top which allows the screw part to move up and down.We are disappointed...welcoming any input! We have all this wine and no "fun" opener...imagine our horror.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold! A must for wine lovers.
My sister bought one for me as a Christmas gift...I thought she was crazy spending so much on a "corkscrew." However, after using the Screwpull, I soon knew it was well worth the cost. The opener runs very smooth and easy...never a damaged cork! It's also very sturdy yet light and feels great in your hands. I used to buy a new wine opener every year-- no longer! This is a must for wine lovers! Consider this an investment and buy it! ... Read more

Forget struggling with your corkscrew, hoping you won't break the cork or drop the bottle. Give this wine opener set a try and you'll be amazed at how easily the cork slips out. You can open a new bottle without someone offering to give you a hand or having to hide in the kitchen swearing under your breath. Put that paring knife away and run the foil cutter around the top of the bottle to remove the foil with ease. Then place the plastic guide over the neck. Balance the corkscrew on top and begin to turn clockwise.Keep turning until the cork lifts itself right out of the bottle. How easy was that? It's true this is a gift set, but I like to buy myself presents. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Scewpull has broken
Yesterday (18 Nov 2004) I was trying to open a very tightly corked bottle of wine, and due to lack of a foil cutter, I had not properly removed the plastic "foil". While putting the scewpull under exceptional stress, the handle snapped off, leaving the screw in the cork and the handle in my hand, as two seperate items.

Am I complaining - NO !!!

I was given this screwpull as a house warming gift, when I lived in the UK. I moved into that house in 1981. When I was first given this corkscrew, I was not too impressed.

First there was a "rule" for using a corkscrew, which was that the screw must not pierce the bottom of the cork. Clearly it is impossible to use a screwpull effectively without piercing the bottom of the cork. When you look behind the rule though, the reason for the rule, must be, so that bits of cork don't fall into the wine. Of course I soon found out that the Screwpull somehow manages to pierce the cork, without causing cork fragment contamination.

Secondly from it's rather fragile looks, I didn't expect it to last as long as a year. In fact it lasted more than 20 years, and many 000's of bottle openings.

YES - I am impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The king of corkscrews.
I have gone through three of these in the last ten years. They are the best corkscrews on the market. The screw is perfect and sharp and never crumbles a cork or pushes it into the bottle.

If I have one criticism of the screwpull it is down to the plastic from which it is constructed. It is a clear hard brittle plastic, relatively tough, but cannot stand being dropped on a hard tile floor.

That aside, you will not find a better corkscrew than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars great wine opener
We purchased this wine opener 12 years ago on the recommendation of a sales clerk at a kitchen supply store. At the time I thought $20 was a lot to pay for a corkscrew, but after using it at least once a week for the past 12 years I can't imagine using another type of wine opener. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you're a wine enthusiast who's moving up from "amateur" to the "fanatic" stage, the Screwpull Sommelier may be just what the doctor ordered. In addition to the foolproof Teflon-coated, pocket Screwpull corkscrew, you'll find a patented foil cutter (four rotating blades make this job much easier than any knife!) and a floating thermometer, all packed in a lovely maple case. The collapsible corkscrew is compact and easy to assemble even without instructions. Ideal temperatures for serving wine are printed right on the case, so you'll never forget that red Bordeaux wines should be served at 59 to 63 degrees F, whereas champagnes are enhanced by a chillier 45 to 48 degrees. If the corkscrew on your Swiss Army knife is lacking a little something, the well-equipped Screwpull Sommelier set will satisfy your desire for oenophilic gear. --Rebecca Staffel ... Read more

Editorial Review

If only the French make true champagne, it's only natural that the French company Le Creuset has designed a champagne opener extraordinaire. This compact tool slips into the notches left in the cork after the wire cage is removed. One little twist and the cork slides out of the bottle--under the control of the star, it can't go flying out of control. For New Year's or wedding celebrations, or for the connoisseur who knows that there's always reason to celebrate, the champagne star is an essential accouterment. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more
