5-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you are buying the right set!
Target has a 5 piece set (without the wisk) at $19.95, so I thought I was getting a good deal when Target agreed to discount to the $14.99 price. This deal is super since these items sell individually for $4.99 each.I have enjoyed using them and they are superior to the typical lightweight, Chinese knockoff bargain. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is probably not the best idea to leave a utensil in a pan while it simmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 yrs and counting....
We got these as a bridal shower gift and they have held up VERY well. I mean- other than the spatula got a bit marred up through use and one of the spoons leaks from the handle after washing. Easily avoided if I remember to stand upside down to dry. Other than that- they are wonderful and show no signs of quitting on me yet and it has been 3 years of daily use...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but...
OXO is a great company with a lot of great products.I love all of their kitchen stuff. If you don't cook much, this is a good set to get.If you're like me and do a lot of stuff in the kitchen, get the 19pc. set.It will have more things that you can use and you won't have to spend when buying items individually. ... SilverStone 14-Inch Nonstick Tongs
    Kitchen (15 September, 2000)
    list price: $12.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

These long-handled, nonstick tongs are great for serving all kinds of pasta, as well as salads. Their 14-inch length digs deep into a big bowl of noodles, and their serrated edges keep a firm grip on food so it doesn't end up on the table. The wide handgrips are brushed stainless steel. These tongs also feature DuPont's SilverStone nonstick surface on both sides: pasta won't cling, so there's more food for you and less stuck to the tongs for you to clean up. These tongs are dishwasher-safe; keep them away from sharp utensils to prevent damage to the nonstick coating. --Doree Armstrong ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Set
I'm getting ready for my own place and bought this because it was on sale. I like how there was almost everything that I need to start out for those first yet attempts at making something edible (hey, tastes good is the next step!).

I would suggest getting the little Pyrex pinch bowls/condiment bowls because it makes cooking a little easier when everything is measured and ready to go.

This set makes a great gift, too. HINT HINT!!! :c)

5-0 out of 5 stars I've used this set more than 10 years and love it!
I've been using these bowls and measuring cups nearly daily for more than 10 years, and find them absolutely indispensable. They don't crack or stain, and look as new as they when I bought them! One of my favorite features is that the smooth pyrex makes them extremely easy to clean.I usually just sponge them off by hand, but have never had a problem putting them in the dishwasher, either. The bowls stack neatly in the cupboard, for easy space-saving.The cups are a bit more awkard to stack due to their handles, but I stack those too without a problem.

The bowls - I love the fact that they're see-through.I've used the larger ones for mixing wet or dry ingredients in cakes, muffins and pancakes; and rinsing produce; and I've used the medium sizes for rinsing rice and other grains.I've even used the smallest bowl as an extra bowl at the table!I don't use my microwave, but pyrex is a material known to work in the microwave.

The measuring cups - I like the easy-to-read markings in American measurements on one side, and metric on the other. Also, the handles are easy to hold and the spouts make for a good clean pour. I like the fact that the markings on the American side are both in ounces and fractions of cups. The one-cup measure has markings in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 cup, as well as 1/3 and 2/3 cups, and calibrations in between the markings.I've never had a problem, even when doubling or halving recipes into odd measures. For measures smaller than 1/4 cup, you'll need to use measuring spoons (4 Tbsps = 1/4 cup.)The large four-cup measure is a great time saver for making soups that call for 8 or 10 cups of water. I also use the two- or four- cup measure when juicing-I put the cup right under the juicer spout and know exactly how much juice I'm getting.Remember I said they don't stain? My larger cups have had quite a bit of carrot/kale/beet juice in them and if they were going to stain, they would have by now!

It's a great deal to be able to get all these pieces together in one set, rather than individually the way I bought them.Given the durability, multiple uses, and the way the set stays in excellent condition year after year, I think it's one of the best kitchen values there is.If you can't find these pieces new, I recommend looking for them used.

3-0 out of 5 stars A perfect assortment
I got a set of these to replace essential kitchen items lost in a move. I was really pleased with the assortment:

The three sizes of Pyrex measures are useful--the metric marks are easy to read, too.
The glass bowls are good for mixing and also can go in the microwave. What was pleasing were the litte extras included-- a dough scraper, a set of measuring spoons that snap together and an egg separator that snaps onto the side of a cup. ... Read more

Misto Gourmet Stainless-Steel Olive Oil Sprayer, Black Band

    Editorial Review

For spreading olive oil evenly on bruschetta, focaccia, and grilled or roasted vegetables, and for spraying muffin and cake pans with vegetable oil, this dispenser is a nifty tool. A plastic cap underneath the sprayer's top twists off so the sprayer can be half-filled (1/3 cup) with oil. Inside the top is a plastic tube that fits over the spray nozzle. Push the top up and down to pump air pressure into the canister. Then spray for 10 seconds and pump up again. It's simple, ingenious, and practical. With its cap on, the sprayer stands just 7-5/8 inches high, so it tucks away easily on any countertop. Made of satin-finish stainless steel with a black-band accent, it's sleek as well as utilitarian. --Fred Brack ... Read more

not worth the trouble, holds hardly any liquid, seemingly needs to be cleaned after every use.waste of money.stay away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
I have owned a Misto for a while and, as others have, I noticed the way the quality of the spray deteriorated over time so that you would only get a stream of oil, instead of a mist. Well, this morning, my Misto exploded while I was using it to make pancakes (periodically spraying the pan during the process). Luckily, no one was hurt, but there is a dent in my kitchen ceiling where the top hit it, upon being expelled from the base with great force. I would estimate the BANG that accompanied the explosion was 85-90 decibels. I will definitely not buy another Misto based on today's explosion, but even before this, I was rather ho-hum about the product anyway. My advice: save your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for olive oil
I've had two of these stop working when used with olive oil, sadly, though the canola oil one is still going strong. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Slow cookers are usually thought of for chili, soup, or pot roast. But the 200-page bonus cookbook that comes with Rival's 4-quart Crock Pot stoneware slow cooker branches out, with recipes like Roast Chicken with Peas, Prosciutto and Cream, San Francisco Cioppino, and Lamb Korma. Not what you'd expect for dinner out of a slow cooker.

Crock Pots are classics, but this one looks like something straight out of a modern, professional kitchen. With a simple design in chrome with black handles and a removable black stoneware crock insert, this 4-quart pot will go with the look of most kitchens. Besides the cookbook, there's also a small catalog of accessories such as tailored vinyl covers, baking pans, meat racks, and thermal carrying cases for transporting food in the stoneware crock.

Clean-up is very easy; warm soapy water will do the trick. (The heating unit is not immersible; just use a soapy rag or cloth.) Do not use scratchy, abrasive cleaners on the chrome exterior. The dimensions of the slow cooker are 12 inches across by 10-1/2 inches high, including handles, feet and lid. Rival provides a limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship under normal use conditions. --Garland Withers ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Give Credit Where Credit is Due
I found this site before getting to the real Rival site. Like many, I was searching for the site for replacement parts. I realized that many of us were having problems with the same parts and that there was also a recall. After reading some of the negative reviews I decided to call Rival for new parts anyway. After a rather long wait on "hold" I did get to speak to a fellow who was very nice. He gladly handled the problem and my new base is on the way. So give the company some credit for standing behind it's product and having some integrity.

2-0 out of 5 stars Works, but safety concerns
As others have noted, the outer case gets very hot. I decided to take it apart to understand why. The removable stoneware sits in an inner aluminum pot surrounded by the outer metal case. The pot and case are held together by a screw, spacer, washers, and nuts through the bottom of the pot. A lip around the top of the pot wraps around the top edge of the case, and 3 legs under the pot contact the bottom of the case. The heating element wraps around the bottom of the sides of the pot. The handles and temp control are attached to the outer housing. There are several metal-to-metal contact points between the pot and outer housing. The screw, legs of the pot, and upper lip conduct heat from the pot to the outer housing. Since the base is metal and does not have insulated feet, I recommend placing the unit on a heat-resistant surface away from combustables, flammables, and exposed skin when in use.
The handles and control knob feel sturdy, but time will tell whether they will crack from the heat. The switch body is also plastic and is mounted very close to the heating element. The inner wiring is wrapped in insulated fabric sleeves, but they are in contact with the housing.
The 3ft power cord is permanently attached and is unusually stiff. I have to form it into shape before plugging it in, and I don't coil it up between uses.
The package I received from Amazon did not include the 200 page recipe book. There were some recipes in the owner's guide and a couple of recipes on the box. A 4-page slow cooker accessory catalog was included showing cookbooks, travel bags, bread/cake bake pan, meat rack, dust cover, liner bags for sale.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rival crockpot piece of junk...
Probably have bashed this product enough, but it is insulting to still see "Sturdy lid and side handles for improved grip" advertised. In no time at all, the handles broke off like peanut brittle; glad I wasn't carrying it around the kitchen. No wonder no one carries replacement handles. Don't know what's better, but sure won't try Rival again. ... Read more

The 8-inch blade on this knife features a curved cutting edge and a blunt back; chopping, dicing, and mincing duties are simplified--and made safer--by utilizing a quick rocking motion on the cutting edge. Part of the popular Four Star series, the hand-honed blade is made with Henckels's Sintermetal Component Technology (SCT), which allows three different grades of steel to be combined to form a single piece, fusing together the blade, bolster, and tang. What does this mean in layman's terms? A strong, high-quality knife that will last a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cook for a living...
I gotta tell ya...this has been the best "out of the box" knife that I have used in a long time and I have purchased and used every FORGED 8 inch chef's knife from every line of every manufacturer listed here on Amazon. The factory edge was perfectly honed and sharp as a razor right from the get go. Usually I have to use a sharpening steel for a few strokes to reclaim the edge but not this one. Maybe I got lucky but I do love it dearly.
The 4 Star line has been around since 1976 and Henckels knows that we "Pros" love it for it's low maintenance, ease in sharpening, comfortable grip, sanitary design AND price. The blade is classic German in shape, a long, round curve for perfect rockin' and a good weight for heavier work (although in the mid to late '90s they went to a French shape and weight for some reason). This 4 Star can't be beat for dollar value.
This is my 5th one purchased in the last 23 years...the previous ones were all "stolen" by line cooks on the job...'nuf said.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is simply no better line of cutlery on the market.
I've been using my Henckel's chef's knife for many years now, and I continue to be impressed with it at every use.The size, weight and balance make it comfortable to use, even for larger "projects" that might cause your hand or arm to get tired with a lesser product.Even after countless uses, the edge remains super sharp, requiring only rare application of the sharpening steel.I found this out the hard way a few days ago with a careless slip of the hand...The heavy duty stainless steel has stood up perfectly to umpteen-bazillion trips through the dishwasher, without the tiniest hint of rust or discoloration.

In short, this is truly a professional quality knife, as is every item in the Four Star, Five Star and Pro-S lines.Yeah, this puppy costs $80 or more, but it's definitely a worthy investment. You really do get what you pay for!Just a word of caution -- stay away from the lower-end Henckel's International line, which is much cheaper but not of comparable quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this knife!
I love to cook, and I've spent a lot of money on cookware. For some reason, however, I continued to buy cheap knives.I guess I always felt that the actualy cookware I was using was so important, that I didn't really understand how having such a good knife would improve things.

Then I got this knife as a gift from a friend who comes over for my cooking a lot.I couldn't believe what I'd been missing! The weight of the knife, combined with such an incredible blade makes 'slicing and dicing' one of the best parts of cooking! This blade has taken everything I've thrown at it effortlessy.I bought a Henkle sharpener to go with it, but it holds its edge so well I don't sharpen it too often.

This kinfe also looks great.Plus, with Henckel quality, you know this will last almost forever.

    Pros:
-Holds an edge very, very well
-Solid and heavy - makes chopping so easy
-Well balanced - feels great in your had
    -Henkel quality

    Cons:
-I only have one! (seriously, I don't have a real con). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Henckels 4 star gets 5 stars
About 5 years ago I got into cooking stir fry a little bit and found that cutting carrots, onions and many other vegitables was quite a chore with the cheap selection of knives that my kitchen was stocked with.I had to get sometimes near paper thin slices of various ingredients and there was no way even the best knife sold by Target could stack up to the task.I went to a real cookware store and purchased this knife and the 14" chefs knife for starters.

The first slice through an onion I knew where the extra money goes, some of it is for the name, but the rest is all quality. These knives will amaze you with how well they feel with their perfect balance and with a little work, you can get the blade sharp enough to shave with. When I held the chefs knife balanced on a tomato and just pulled, the weight of the knife sliced through it with a clean stroke. The paring knife is handy for so many more things than just paring (which it does quite well), I've used it more than once as a steak knife. For some reason I cant stand serrated edges anymore.

Cut all the coke cans you want with your Ginsu, but leave the real jobs to a real knife.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CUT ABOVE THE REST
It seems that everyone's kitchen drawer holds more than one paring knife - ours certainly does, and this small knife by Henckels is a favorite.

The three inch blade makes it perfect for paring whether it be a garlic clove or potato.

With a user friendly handle it fits neatly into your hand, and is easy to grip for lengthy chores.

Pop it in the dishwasher, and it's like new.

5-0 out of 5 stars ThePrecious
Yes, yes, I know -- too much "Lord of the Rings."Everytime I get a new little device I love I dub it "The Precious" and selfishly hoard it for myself.I chose this little timer because of the Pyrex name.I was disappointed when it arrived -- I thought it would be larger. And it looked a little flimsy. Then I used it and fell in love.I have an old, old oven with a dial timer that is murder to set. This little guy was easy to set and has a cheerful chirpy little alarm. Then I began to use it for everything -- to time my teeth whitening sessions -- how long till a favorite TV program -- my Spanish study lessons -- oh yes, and cooking.I started carrying it with me whereever I went, even to my health club to time my time on the track because it is so small (how could I have ever thought it was too small?) that it easily slips into my pocket. My husband is exasperated whenever he wants to use it because I always have it so I am guessing we will soon become a two-timing (haha) household.Wish they offered it in silver and black models, and I especially wish they would make it with a little slot for a neckstrap so I could wear it around my neck with my "precious" Sandisk mini cruzer.

4-0 out of 5 stars We have five of them
My partner & I love these timers. We pre-program the four timers to 15, 21, 30, and 45 minutes. This makes it easy to time most any length of time. For dinner parties, I like pulling off multi-course meals so having something where the rice, the roast, and the parboiling vegetables can all be on separate timers is essential.
Replacing the battery has been somewhat of a chore.Pyrex has does not make it clear what kind of battery they require. We haven't lost any due to dropping though one seems to giving out from an accumulation of kitchen crud.Nor have I had any problem hearing them. The cat has even gotten used to the alarm.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this timer!
I have used this particular timer in my laboratory for 5 years (as do nearly half of my coworkers).I worked in a particularly noisy part of the lab, and always heard it.I must have dropped it half a dozen times before it broke.I love it's multiple time settings, and the option to count up or count down.It can be used for more than just kitchen timing too; I've used it for overnight incubations (or baking a turkey, or making sure you get to the doctor's office on time). It also has a clip on it, so you can clip it to your pocket or belt and bring it with you.I was thrilled to see that it was available for the general public!I'm definately getting one for personal use.

The downside is mainly its durability. If it drops the right way, it's out.I've been through three of these in my five years. The first one lasted 2 years then I dropped it twice in the same week and it stopped working. The next only lasted six months, but it was dropped many times (be careful of the clip- I often bumped it into tables when it was on my hip). And the third one has lasted 2.5 years so far.

Overall, great product. You just need to be mindful of it's placement, and don't drop it! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Focused on "healthy living" rather than chronic dieting, Cooking Light is geared towards both the veteran cook who wants to "lighten up" and the novice determined to give up prepackaged "diet" meals. Each issue covers a different theme, from "superfast suppers" to "pretty, easy fruit pies," and includes features on food-related health trends; fast, healthy meals; and original recipes from readers. We especially like it when the editors rescue a reader's favorite, albeit fatty, recipe, giving it a healthy makeover, showing before-and-after stats on calories, fat, and cholesterol. The message is clear: you don't have to sacrifice the foods you love once you learn to "eat smart." --Daphne Durham ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Light on the cooking
I just started a subscription to this magazine and when I got my first issue I thought they had sent me the wrong magazine! There were no recipes or cooking articles in the first half of the magazine. There were fitness articles, organizing hints, and style sections, but no cooking until the second half of the magazine. There were a lot of ads- but that I can live with.I was just disappointed not to have more sections that are actually about cooking. The recipes and cooking sections in the second half of the magazine were really interesting and had lots of ideas I'd like to try.I just wish that the whole magazine could be about cooking and recipes rather than trying to be something else. That said, I think the cooking sections are worth the hassle of digging through the other articles- lots of ideas and mostly easy to prepare.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly advertising
I just received my first issue and by the time I got to the middle of the magazine there was only 1-2 recipes.I was very disappointed.I was interested in mainly recipes not advertising or articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read
Being a mother of teenagers it is hard to come up with good recipes that can win-out over fast food in their mind. This magazine gives great healthy options that even picky eaters enjoy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Staple for Your Cookbook Library
I have been doing Weight Watchers for several months now and this cookbook totally restored my resolve to eat well. I have found a wide variety of recipes that are both healthy and interesting. The book contains plenty of tips for beginning cooks and dishes with enough complexity to satisfy experienced chefs. Bon appetit!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL COOKBOOK.HUNDREDS OF GREAT LOW FAT RECIPES.BEAUTIFUL PICTURES.THERE'S RECIPES FOR EVERYTHING I LOOK FOR.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cook book ever printed
I received this as a christmas gift. And let me tell you, not one recipie has failed me yet, from desserts to meats... it's just great. The only alterations I make are in the desert sections, most recipies only call for white flour- I often find myself substituting with half whole wheat flour. And the recipies still rock.I have gotten many great responses to almost all I have made.

It's very difficult to find good low fat recipies, and often I used to find myself experimenting with on-line recipies, and most of the time what turned out was barely edible, not the case here...

go get this book.If you like to cook lite, and eat right... this is the one for you... ... Read more
