1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing compared to the Mach III
I have been using the Mach 3 for years now and I got the Schick in the mail as a freebie. I decided to finally try it after I ran out of Mach 3 blades.

I found that it did provide a good close shave the first two times I used it. Then on the subsequent attempts, I could feel it start to pull the hairs. On top of that, I started to get nicks and cuts. I have discontinued use after the fourth shave.

I do not reccommend this razor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but I'll stick with my Mach III
I've wanted to go with disposables for a while now, since the blades for my Mach III can get expensive at the rate I use razors (I shave my head bald, so I go through more razors than the average guy). I decided to try these based on the great reviews I read here, and these were basically my first real attempt with disposables.

While I can agree with the others who said that these do provide a good shave, and they are comfortable to handle, I did notice one big advantage of my Mach III over these - rinsing the stubbles out of the blades. It seems to me that it's much more difficult to rinse these disposables, and they "clog" up quickly.

While my Mach III rinses almost effortlessly with low water pressure and doesn't really clog up and the hairs just kind of push through, these new Schicks need to be rinsed after almost every swipe and they're difficult to rinse out. I had to also tap them on the edge of the sink pretty hard to unclog them. This quickly becomes a tedious chore, so unfortunately I'm going back to my Mach III for the speed, convenience, and ease. Too bad, I was really hoping these were the ticket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shave Something
These razors are excellent. They get my face smooth with less irritation then my electric razor used to.Not only do their triple blades make them better then other disposable razors, but their design makes them easier to use then the Mach III.And a pack is cheaper then the Mach III refill blades as well.

My personal preference is the aloe vera coated blades, but any variety is wonderful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TRIMMER! SAVES MONEY, BEWARE LINE UP
GREAT TRIMMER! HAS SAVED ME ALOT OF MONEY ON HAIRCUTS, THE LINE UP PART ISNT TOO EFFECTIVE FOR HAIRLINE USE, ITS GREAT ON THE BEARD AND MUSTACHE TO A DEGREE. JUST NEED TO KEEP GOING OVER THOSE AREAS A FEW TIMES. SO I ADVISE YOU GET A LINEUP EVERY 2 WEEKS TO KEEP YOUR HAIR LOOKING SHARP! A MUST BUY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product, but don't count on the flipover trimmer part.
This is the very first trimmer I ever used.I was tired of waiting in line and paying what I can do at home in 15 minutes. The trimmer is fairly easy to use and requires minimal maintenance.(I just brushed the hair off after each use.)

It would deserve a full 5-star if the latch of flip-over fine trimmer didn't break the first time I used it.The fine trimmer still works with my thumb pressing to hold it in place.Since then, I have given and received haircuts 20+ times using it (that's what starving graduate students do other than subsisting on Ramen noodles.)When I save enough money, I think I will simply get a beard trimmer to do the fine touches. After all, one can't expect a $20 tool to do everything.

3-0 out of 5 stars busted
I just got mine in the mail today and the product must have been updated because the accessories I recieved are not what is displayed on the website. Amazon you need to update. I did not recieve a neck brush and only one comb. To top it all off the plastic part of the detail trimmer is cracked. I have not used it yet but hopefully it will work. ... Read more

Aveeno Therapeutic Shaving Gel - 7 oz
by Aveeno
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France
Reviews (3)

5-0 out of 5 stars I use it
I tried this out because I use Aveeno lotion in the winter for my psriosis. This stuff is excellent for people with that skin condition. No complaints, I used Nivea shave gel before and I think this works better. It does have an oat smell that sometimes makes me hungry when I shave. Give this a shot, if you don't like it try something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars The holy grail of shaving
Much like the previous reviewer, I have been shaving my head for years. I have tried probably 20 or 30 different kinds of shaving oils, foams, creams, and lotions, and none of them have compared to Aveeno.

Previously, I preferred Gillette Edge for my face, and Headslick Lotion for shaving my head. Headslick is formulated specifically for shaving your head, and I didnt think it got any better, even though I still got razor bumps, razor burn, and the occasional ingrown hair.

I bought some Aveeno from DERMAdoctor, and it has been amazing. Not once have I got razor burn, or razor bumps. I haven't had a single ingrown hair either.

The first thing I noticed about the gel was that it has great expansion. A small portion of it is more than sufficient for my entire head and face.

Normally when I use Edge gel, I lather about half my head or face, shave that, then lather the other half, because it loses its volume rather quick. I was able to lather my entire head and face with Aveeno, and not have to worry about it losing its volume.

The actual shaving is unbelievably smooth. Until I was used to it, I kept running my fingers behind the blade, making sure it was actually shaving the hair off, because it glides so smooth. I was able to do my entire face without rinsing the razor.

Aveeno shaving gel has also increased the life of my razors, because it makes the razors glide through the hair so efforlessly, and I never have to go over the same area twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best shaving gel out there
This is much better than all of the other shaving gels out there, and I've tried all of the major brands. In fact, the way that I found Aveeno was on my continual quest to get the best shave by trying new products.

I've been shaving my head on a daily basis for years, and so it is really important for me to get good shaving materials. The last thing that I want is a bunch of razorburn and ingrown hairs on the top of my head.

And, speaking of that, when I use Aveeno shave gel, I don't get razorburn or ingrown hairs. When I don't use Aveeno, then I do.I used to really like Edge gel, and believe me that this stuff is about three times better than Edge.

This says that it is dermatologically recommended for sensitive skin.It is good for people with all types of skin--My skin isn't any more sensitive than the next person's.Aveeno just gives you a really good shave.

My wife also likes to use this on her legs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than just the 'Mach 3', hubby says.
I got this for my husband because he had to shave too frequently and I thought they'd improve upon the Mach3.Well they did! This Turbo brand of Mach 3 is actually much better; his shave lasts longer, the blades last longer, and it leaves a very attractive smooth shave.I choose this one over that Mach3 power vibrating blade because, I don't know, a sharp blade the vibrates is asking for trouble in my opinion.Haha...

He's very happy with it and likes the shave. And speaking about money, if the shave and blades last longer than before, it's a great value!

Highly suggested!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive!
The problem I've encountered is that the Mach 3 Turbo System gets quite expensive. It is suggested by the manufacturer that you change blades when the blue strip is gone. If I follow this guideline, I end up changing blades about ten times a month. At $15 for 8 blades, that comes to almost $20 per month just in blades! For a shave that's smooth but not as close as I would like, that's a bit much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not All It's Cracked Up To Be
I used my new Mack 3 Turbo for about 6 months and went through a lot of new blades to be fair in my judgement. It does shave very close, but not closer the other 3 bladed razors I have used. After the 6 months of use, I found that it shaved very well until I had to shave over the edge of my jaw and chin where it failed to give a good clean shave right under my jaw-line and chin with the first stroke.I found if I try to shave closer, I got to many nicks.I only got a close shave in those areas after I lathered up again and shave agaist the grain, but at times I did get razor burn doing that. With out question, my old Gillette Sensor Excel with it's two blades did a much better job with only one stroke. The Sensor Excel seems to huge the surface of my face much better, and the Mack 3 Turbo seems not to keep all 3 blade in contact with my skins surface when going over my jaw and chin. All in all, I would have been happy with the Mack 3 Turbo's shave, it's great looks, and I really love the new handle. And most of the time, if I shave slower I got a great shave after lathering up again and shaving against the grain. However, I was not happy at all with the way the blade got dull so very fast, and there not cheap! This is by far the biggest disappointment with the Mach 3 Turbo and the reason I give it only 3 stars. It's also the reason I went back to my Sensor Excel until I got my new Gillette Sensor 3.I think the Sensor 3 shaves just as close at the Mach 3 Turbo and does ever better in the problem areas under the edge of my jaw and chin. The Sensor 3 blades are about $1.00 less per pack and last much longer then the Mach 3 Turbo Blades. And one more good thing, I can use both Sensor Excel Blade and Sensor 3 Blade with both my Sensor Excel and new Sensor 3!I'll keep the new Sensor 3 at home, and keep my old Sensor Excel in my travel bag to use on my many camping and fishing trips, vacation or when ever away from home.I would recommend the Gillette Sensor 3 over the Mack 3 Turbo because of these reasons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Slick
Cartridges are Cartridges. However I have had a few blades that I swear the blade went before the beard. Others being marginal my wife made me use to dull down so she could use them.
These animals just do not dull. Gillette must count on the volume of users because Gillette would starve to death waiting for me to use enough to make production worth while. And I use shaving soap just to mark the area covered as there is already some sort of slick lubricating strip on the cartridge; with out this strip I would not know when to toss the Cartridges out.
There is enough space between blades to allow for easy cleaning. One can almost look forward to shaving.
Even though they seem to last for ever I would not want to be caught at the last minute with out a replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only One to Buy!
This is the only blade I'm allowed to buy for my husband. He normally has to shave at least twice daily but these blades allow him to go all day without the second shave. They don't tear up his face in the process either, but get it so close that he doesn't have to worry about rushing home to shave again.A truly great product and well worth the price. It's great for ladies too!

4-0 out of 5 stars So close to perfect.
I'm still looking for the perfect razor. The Mach3 Turbo comes close, though. I've been using it daily (or nearly so) since its debut. It works, and it gets the job done. It rarely nicks me, but I do still get skin irritation. Down under my jawline, I still feel scraggly by the end of the day, but it's not too bad.

I know this sounds like a bad review, but it really isn't. I mean, it's tough to get excited about shaving, but at least the Mach3 Turbo has me shaving every day,if you want to shave with a blade, this is the blade for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Slick Operator. . .
I've been using Edge since it first came out many years ago, in a number of permutations. There IS a difference between Edge and the Gilette, and between Edge and the 'house-brand' drugstore brands. For some reason, it's slicker and works better.I've loved all the Edge variations.I have also found it to be quite economical; for my beard only a very small amount of gel will foam my whole face.Highly recommended, and like another reviewer states, it makes that little lube strip on razors unnecessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Shaving Gel
This is an awesome shaving gel.I seem to get a closer shave with Edge gel products than with shaving creams and also seem less likely to cut myself or have skin irritation afterwards.I highly recommend Edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes the little lube strip on your razor pointless!
Look under "hirsute" in the dictionary, and you'll find my portrait. I need to shave every day to keep from looking like a sasquatch. Consequently, I'm always on the lookout for the ideal shaving lubrication. Edge Gel for Sensitive Skin is currently the closest thing to shaving nirvana. Easy to apply, Edge's rich, thick lather softens even the coarsest hair and ensures a clean, close swipe of the razor. It helps reduce nicks and cuts, and soothes any irritation. And there's plenty of gel in each canister! I would definitely recommend the product.

However, I'm less satisfied with the packaging -- more specifically, the delivery mechanism. You'd think, in this day and age, that Edge would be able to devise a nozzle that doesn't continue to dribble gel for the next ten minutes. Every day, I pop the cap off to find semi-congealed, foam-encrusted goop caked down the front. I suppose it's appropriate, considering this product was designed for men. You know the old saying: "no matter how much you jiggle and dance, the last drop ends up in your pants." ... Read more

Editorial Review

When a Zen master invited Geri Larkin to join him on a spiritualpilgrimage to Korea, she had a spiritually incorrect reaction. One might think"that I would be swept away by emotion, stunned at my good fortune," writesLarkin in First You Shave Your Head. Instead, she obsessed over themandate that she shave off all of her hair. "If I was going to be a card- carrying pilgrim, then I had to peel my fingers off of my last scalp ofidentity--my hair," writes Larkin, whose other popular works includeStumbling TowardEnlightenment and TapDancing in Zen. This self-effacing, witty narrator speaks with anunabashedly, all-American frame of mind, helping Westerners see themselveswalking the Buddhist path.As Larkin treks through the mountains andmonasteries of Korea, she shares her pangs of hunger and her fear of the unknownas well as the bliss of "magic moments," such as drinking green tea in ahermitage that was carved into a cliff. This travelogue shows us what it meansto journey toward enlightenment with humility, or at least good sense of humor.--Gail Hudson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Reading
While I did enjoy this book for it's easily digested format, I also found it was somewhat shallow in parts. This book "captures" Larkin's travels with her teacher (Samu Sunim) during the summer of 1999 all throughout South Korea. By the end of the book, Geri makes it no secret that she rather dislikes her teacher. There was one point in the book where Samu appears to lose his temper with her, for wearing her robes incorrectly in a monastery. Larkin resented this tremendously, and never really aptly admits the faults of her subsequent rage that followed thereafter.

For me, this is why I think Zen Buddhism in the West is having some real problems taking root. There is an almost anti-monastic and anti-authoritarian sickness enveloping our practice here. Larkin certainly realized that Zen as it is practiced in Korea is much more demanding than it is in Western countries, and her teacher is actually pretty cranky throughout the trip; this was summed up in Samu Sunim's informing Larkin and another female "monk" named Haju that he is "Correcting 3 years of mistakes in 30 days." This is accentuated by the fact that, at the time, Larkin claims she and Haju are the 1st women to be accepted as monks in these institutions. I don't think this is accurate, however. Zen master Seung Sahn had been taking men and women with him back to Korea all the time all throughout the early 80's.

Larkin mentions Martha Stewart 3 or 4 times in this work, commenting on one place they stay as having a Martha Stewart cleanliness to it. This book, flawed as it is, is at the very least written honestly. This can be observed in some of Larkin's somewhat immature observations and reactions throughout the work. If you're a Martha Stewart fan with a taste for spa treatments or shopping at the mall, then this book might actually speak real loud to you. For me, it was a good book but not a particularly insightful one. So on a Dharmic level, it's not much. As a travelogue, it wasn't bad. 3.5 to 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Judge a book by its cover?
Actually, I LOVE this book:Zen pilgrimage and Korean Dharma history to boot (just my thing}.Traveling with Larkin is like coffee with your best friend just outside the Zen hall -- as close (and enjoyable) as you can get without going in and actually sitting down on a mat yourself.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars (and I almost gave it three) was the back cover, upon which the marketing folks at the publishing house wrote something to the effect of Larkin being the first Western woman to have been honored with a pilgrimage through Korea's temples. Not only is this untrue, but NOWHERE in the text does Larkin herself make such a claim. What she DOES say is simply that her and traveling buddy Haju (also a WOMAN!) were the first Western women some of the Korean monks had ever seen -- which I'm sure was true.

Kind of a big difference there.Either someone at Celestial Arts accidentally misread Larkin's text, or they hoped to sell more books by stretching the truth.Either way is a little disrespectful not only to Larkin, but to the women who made the journey before her.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing doorway
What an amazing journey I took when I read this book.Knowing little to nothing about Korea (ok there was that MASH tv show) and just a tad bit more about zen, I found myself alternating between tenderness and strength as I read through her journeys.A must read for anyone who thinks they are able to handle the rigors of a spiritual practice! ... Editorial Review

Licensed to shave closely and painlessly, this cord/cordlesselectric shaver is designated Norelco's James Bond model not onlybecause it's high-tech but also because its heads can be adjusted tosuit the sensitivity of 00-anyone's skin. The shaver has acomfort-control dial that varies the spring and pressure of the threefloating heads through nine settings. Roger Moore might opt for agentle setting, while Sean Connery surely would choose a firmersetting--and novices to grizzled veterans can please their faces aswell. For this model, Norelco has also improved the lift and cut,below-skin shaving technology of its two-stage cutting system, whichprovides slots for longer hairs and holes for stubble while thefloating heads are adjusting individually to facial contours. Afull-width trimmer pops up for neat work on sideburns and mustaches.

More tech-chic comes in the form of a polymer LED display that tellshow many minutes of shaving time remain when the shaver is operatingcordless on its lithium-ion battery. The LED display also warns whenthe heads need cleaning (all it takes is a rinsing under running water)or replacing (replacement heads available separately). An audible alarmsounds when the shaver requires recharging on its storage stand. Asix-minute quick charge is good for a single shave, and a one-hour fullcharge provides 100 minutes of cordless shaving. The shaver fits thehand beautifully and goes on the road stylishly in its leather travelpouch, while automatically adjusting to worldwide voltage variances. 4-0 out of 5 stars The one to buy ifyou've got sensitive skin
Although I'm a couple of years past the half-century mark, my skin is still prone to break outs. That is why I can't use a blade as my primary shaver.I've had the 8894XL since it first came out.It gives a very good shave, but not as close as a blade. But the best thing is there is minimal irritation.

Thinking I could get a closer shave with an electric razor, I got the top of the line Braun. It did give me a shave as close as a blade, but at the expense of great irritation and break outs.It made me appreciate the Norelco more.

If getting the closest possible shave at all costs is the most important quality you are seeking in an electric razor, get the Braun. However, if you are plagued with irritation when shaving, then this Norelco is the shaver for you.It is for me.

Oh, and the razor is easy to clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will I ever have to charge it?
Amazing how many shaves you can get in its 100 minutes charge time.I have had it over four weeks and after its initial charge, using it every day, I still have 55 minutes of charge time left. The shave seems to be closer than my old 6000 series shaver that I lost.I went all out and purchased this "over rated razor" and found it to exceed my wildest expectations.I have a thick course beard, however tender neck skin and it works great with no burning.Close and comfortable is the easiest way to describe the shave.

I was lucky to purchase the razor in March when the razor was $134.00 with free shipping and a $30 rebate. This razor is however well worth the current asking price and Amazon is still the low price leader.Check the pricing out yourself.Thank you Amazon and Norelco my face is happy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Hand
Hi all

This is my first product review and I have never endorsed a product before...
I think you can call me an old-hand in electrical shavers.I started to shave in 1978 using a Remington electrical shaver. My first Phillips/Norelco shaver was a gift from my grandfather in 1983.
Since then I have bought 5-6 Phillips shavers in succession (a new one every 3-4 years). They require no maintenance except for cleaning, a yearly head change and 2 year battery change. With each new shaver the shaving gets better and it is difficult to see any improvements that can be made in these machines. But they DO get them to shave better.

In the meanwhile I got several other brand shaving machines as gifts (Wet, Grid etc) but after experimenting for a few days I always resumed shaving with the Phillips dry shavers. I am not a fan of wet-electrical shavers (even Phillips).

I have had the Spectra 8894 for two months now. This one is a wonder and I strongly recommend it. I think if you buy a new shaver every couple of years you should get yourself the top model, the difference being 25$ or so per YEAR of use.

Just about everything the home barber needs to cut the entire family’s hair--or give a tidy-up trim between cuts--can be found in this haircut kit. The centerpiece of the kit is the brushed-finish clipper, with a contoured handle designed to fit most hands. Editorial Review

Everything the home barber needs to cut the entire family’s hair--or give a tidy-up trim between cuts--can be found in this haircut kit. The centerpiece of the kit is the highly polished clipper, with a contoured handle lightweight enough for most hands. A side lever adjusts the cutting blade guide to five positions to tackle different hair lengths. Coated with titanium, the blades stay sharper longer for professional cuts at home, and never need lubrication. This deluxe model features two operating options: plugged into a wall outlet with the included 6-1/2-foot power cord adapter, the clipper works immediately; or, after charging for 14 hours, the rechargeable batteries allow cordless use, handy for moving to a well-lighted spot in the center of the room. To ensure the kit suits a variety of hair styles, eight guide combs are provided, ranging from 1/8 to 1 inch in length, one each for both the right and the left ear. As a bonus, the kit includes a battery-powered personal trimmer, 5-1/2-inches in length, with a single blade for precision trims on mustaches, beards, and sideburns. The rounded, brushed-chrome-look plastic handle feels good to hold, and a single switch turns it on and off. The kit also includes: a pair of hair-cutting scissors, tapered styling comb, barber’s comb, four sectioning clips, nylon shoulder cape, cleaning brush, and neck brush. All fit compactly into the hard-sided case. Remington covers the haircut kit with a five-year warranty against defects.--Ann Bieri ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my number 1 all over do.
Im probably not the best person to review this complete haircut kit as I literally shave my head short (number 1) all over. However for this persom they are great. They feel very well made and durable. They are extremely sharp and not having to oil them is a very welcome feature. They hold their charge well enough. As for the other 21 pieces in the set I can really comment as I wont be using them but they look of a decent quality. Shame remington cannot introduce a stand alone clipper set without all the fancy accessories for a cheaper price for those who just buzz cut though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nervously awaiting delivery.
Read the bad reviews - but took a chance anyway. What a SUPERB
Clipper with a full load of accessories. I used the power cord immediately and it is very quiet - and smoothe, no jerking hair
and effortless to use. Gave myself (tricky using a mirror) a
super trim job all around. Stunned by how smoothe and EFFORTLESS
it was using it. Fantastic 23pc set. My BARBER has a noisy noisy
thing he used on my head - that raised all kind of XXXX ---jerking out hair as it nearly stalled at times. Here I did my own hair and it looks darn good --with NOT EVEN ONE PULL! Many
many years ago I bought CLIPPERS and they were terrible - snat-
ching hair out by the roots. This REMINGTON CLIPPER is fantastic
smoothe and quiet and worth every penny. With this unit ANYBODY can be a Barber in about an hour. I RECOMMEND this product 100
percent - and love the "adventure" of cutting my own hair - and
saving money!Jack (and I'm 72)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected!
When used with anything but the one inch attachment it badly pulls hair. Even the scissors and trimmer are dull. ... Read more

An instruction video accompanies this kit to show how easy--and economical--it is to cut and style hair at home. All the required tools are included in the kit, beginning with the electric clipper, which adjusts for controlling taper. Four combs snap onto the clipper to cut hair evenly at lengths ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 inch; two combs with angled teeth offer precise tapering while cutting around either ear; two styling clips hold hair out of the way; and barber and styling combs arrange hair for even trimming. Also included are a plastic barber cape, barber scissors, and a neck brush. Lubricating oil, a cleaning brush, and a guard for the blade keep the clipper in good operating order. All items in the kit are stored in a 11-1/2-by-10-inch plastic case. The entire kit carries a two-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by flashy look
Spend more money to get something better. This unit broke after 4 uses. No power, nothing. Their 2-year warantee requires I pay to ship it to Homedics AND give them a check for 5 dollars so they can ship it back. I rather give my money to a reputable company, and suggest you look at Wahl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay, so i cut my own hair!
its not because i am cheap!i replaced an oyster with this kit.this is a much higher quality.the blades are sharp and maint. is easy.i use the 1/2 and 3/8 attachments with the tapers.very easy to do

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job - worth a try
I was looking for a good clipper set and decided to try this one due to the HoMedics promotion.
First of all, this was my first clipper set ever. So I have nothing to compare against (Wahl, etc.). But I can say that it did everything I
expected. I do like to trim my hair very short (especially on the sides and the back) and this worked fine for that. Of course, my wife
had to do the trimming and it took her a little getting used to, but she's quite gotten the hang of it. My first hair cut wasn't so bad - a little
non-uniformity here and there, but that could have just been my wife. I was still very pleased overall. Saved me time and money, and
the haircut was not bad at all. One more haircut at home and I'll have saved enough money to cover the cost of this product!
Also, I didn't know this earlier, but there's a lever on the side so that you can do a fine adjustment on exactly how short you want to
cut your hair (with or without the guide combs). Speaking of guide combs, they seemed good enough for my purpose. We started with
the #1 on the back and the sides and blended upwards with the #2. Finally, we used the scissors to trim off the top.
By the way, I noticed that they didn't show a pair of scissors included in the picture of all accessories. So if you're wondering about that,
it IS in fact included (handle is black).
So, in closing, I'd say this clipper set does all that you could expect it to do and it's definitely worth a try, especially if it's on sale! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, informative and a quick read
I received this book (along with the products the authors are affiliated with) as a gift and would recommend it (and them).

As an engineer, I found the systematic analysis of the best types of products, techniques and tools to be very useful. The authors recommend types of products (which they do happen to sell) but not specific brands. The one exception to this is a product they don't sell anyway.

I liked the book and found some great information and advice in there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please buy our advertisement
Skip this book. It's simply an over-glorified advertisement for the store of the same name. Reading this, you can enjoy page after page of "To shave properly, you need this product which we conveniently carry in a range of exorbitant prices." Yes! I do need that sterling silver shaving handle, hand crafted by the finest Elbonian craftsmen especially for me, and I cannot live without the lavender-rosemary-thyme-sandalwood-myrrh-poison ivy pre-shave oil! How did I ever shave before these things? Just buy some shaving cream you like and use a gentle touch if you want a better shave. ... Read more

Editorial Review

More than one male-bonding episode has turned on the agony of razor burn, caused by a coarse beard and an imperfect shave. Thus the need for A Closer Shave, a novelty book in a petite size that should fill a large void. According to the author, Wallace Pinfold, there has been no better time in history to get a really close shave--an excellent coincidence with the fact that the clean-shaven look is currently the in thing. The trick to a really close shave seems to lie in the temperature and quantity of the water. There's more, but it would be unfair to give the plot away. Pinfold, whose name suggests a character out of P.G. Wodehouse but whose bio hints at a career as an adventurer, also provides entertaining notes on shaving history, odd shaving inventions and conventions, and famous beards through the centuries. --Brenda Pittsley ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Piece Of Humor And History!
Here is reading entertainment at its best! A nifty examination of facial shaving of all types, with clever illustrations and photos, plus some of history's strangest beards, including the fellow with a beard that reached the floor. King Gillette plays a leading role, as might be expected.Includes a "March of Progress from 10,000 BC to the present!..A real treat for all!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have
This book does not offer "tricks to a really close shave". However, it is both a nice present and a nice to have. Why? Did you know about the beard tax imposed by Peter the Great? Guess why J. Palmer wasjailed in 1840. Ever seen Kojak shaving his head? Guess why Giletteinvested $750 million in development and manufacturing of the firsttriple-bladed razor. That's why. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The baldfaced truth
I was expecting this to be a sequel to Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, but silly me, it's actually about being bald, which has nothing to do with the famous French playwright's play, despite its title. Nor does the play have anything to do with the recent popular cable TV drama, since it was written several decades before the show premiered, even though James Gandolfini looks like a pretty good "Bald Soprano" to me. But then Nietzsche's book, The Gay Science, has nothing to do with the Gay/Lesbian scene, either.

As someone who's hairline is receding even faster than his stock portfolio (which is saying something these days), or whose scalp is being denuded faster than the Brazilian rainforest at an industrial defoliants convention, I found this to be a valuable book on how to cope with baldness. You can't have too many books about balding in your library, I always say, and this one is chock full of valuable advice. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Shave It!
This is the best book my husband has ever read. He finally realized the reason I love him has nothing to do with the hair on his head. In fact, his single brother finally shaved his head and he has more dates than when he was sporting the over-the-head sweep. After getting use to a shaved head, it seems, most men appear more confident, ie funny and confortable to be with. For any woman that needs to give their loved one a little boost give them this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a magnificent book. Even for readers like myself, with a luxuriant coif, it was an eye-opener. I have been getting in touch with my "inner coot" and going through the dynamics of "powerbalding" even though I am not myself a slaphead. First rate. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Before Sinead O'Connor became conservative America's most reviled musician when she ripped up a picture of the Pope on TV and refused to perform live at a New Jersey venue following "The Star Spangled Banner," she vocally supported the IRA at home in Ireland and generally roused the rabble. Indeed, she's one female pop star who's truly earned her army boots. Though her once meteoric musical career has suffered due to her outspokenness, the powerful voice and presence found on her second album is beyond reproach. Best known as the source of O'Connor's breakthrough cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," this is a moving, intensely passionate work full of dark beauty and longing, constructed with a fierce independence and a taste for the unique. This undeniably pop album (albeit with modern-rock and folk elements) has more than held up through the years. --Lorry Fleming ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE EXCEPTION THAT PROOVES THE RULE
This is the exception that prooves the rule of the dreaded Sophmore Slump. Many an artist has delivered a knockout debut only to fail miserably with their second effort. This is that rare exception. I Do Not Want What I Haven't Gotbetters Sinead O'Connor's debut the Lion and the Cobra on every level - musically, lyrically, vocally. This is an exceptional album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Venomous!
I found "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" shelved in my step dad's music collection, figuring that he probably just listened to "Nothing Compares 2 U" and shelved it, as my parents seem to do that: buy the album and listen to the big hit over and over when it's on the radio all the time. I skipped to "Nothing Compares 2 U" (...) And then it ran off in to "Jump in the River" as I was getting some ice cream from the freezer, and it was even better, so I listened to the album from the beginning, getting the idea that there was more to it than the Prince tune. "The Emperor's New Clothes," "Nothing Compares 2 U," "Jump in the River," and "You Cause as Much Sorrow" are the songs I found the most instantly likable. I figure if you can chose a well enough song to do your own rendition of, then you can probably write decent songs your self. In this case it's true. Not always, though. I went on to discover "Three Babies," as it's a song that blossoms, and can be missed, and "Black Boys on Mopeds," and when I heard "Margaret Thatcher..." I was locked in to what Sinead O'Connor might sing. "Margaret Thatcher on T.V./ Shocked by the deaths that took place in Beijing/ It seems strange that she should be offended/ The same orders are given by her." All my friend Garrett had to say about this record's that "It sounds very early 90's." I listen to it pretty often and love it. It fits with any vibe I've got.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Compares To This....
I cannot relate or understand those who say that S. O'Connor is a unstable artist... that's just-- so NOT true. Just because she voiced her opinion and spoke forward, she's now disliked...too bad, cos you're missing out. I like artist's who are not afraid to speak out-loud, there are only few artists out there-- whom may involve politics & religion and have been looked down at because of their opinion...what a shame.......outspokenness...is what the world lacks...

My favorite song is ''Nothing Compares 2 U'' which is undeniably her most popular song even until today. The first time I heard that song, it made me soooooooo godamn depressed, and if you listen, at the end of the song, her last verses sound sooo miserable that it just made me bawl my head off....

Other great songs are ''Black Boys On Mopeds''-- her commented song on Margaret Thatcher is allot like that song Sting recorded called ''They Dance Alone'' where he comments/protests against General Augusto Pinochet (sometime good-friend of Thatcher...).

''Three Babies'' shows her excellent vocal range, also makes one hell of a haunting song, ''I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'' probably has the best lyrics on the album. The rest of the songs are all good, except I wasn't so fond of ''The Emperor's New Clothes''.

This is another CLASSIC to add to your collection...Nothing compares to it... ... Read more
