    Editorial Review

When they opened their first store in 1977, Joel Dean and Giorgio DeLuca's mission was to spread the gospel of good eating. Today the very name Dean & DeLuca conjures up visions of the holy land for seekers of fine cheeses, charcuterie, and fresh-baked artisan breads. In Dean & DeLuca: The Food and Wine Cookbook, D&D wine director Jeff Morgan celebrates the sublime marriage of D&D's original old-world concept--offering top-quality international culinary selections--and the influence of California's diverse wines. Beginning with a veritable "California Wine 101" course, Morgan details a concise history of California winemaking from pre-gold rush days through the dry gulch of Prohibition and onward to glory in the 1980s. Also included are primers on the chief varietals and the basics of pairing wine with food. The recipes, which range from uncomplicated to fairly ambitious, and from economical to downright indulgent, are both inventive and inviting. Simple dishes like Chilled Yellow Tomato Soup with Guacamole, and Fish Soup with Artichoke Hearts and Artichoke Aioli highlight the best of California's bounty, while Lobster, Cabernet, and Shitake Soup, or Caviar Soufflé provide opportunities to revel in the elegant. Clever twists on more usual dishes are also well represented: Chile-Pecan Chicken Breasts with Honey Mustard Glaze, Garlic Pork Chops with Sauvignon Beurre Blanc, and Saffron Chardonnay Risotto offer welcome variety. Not all of the recipes include wine as an ingredient, but each includes helpfulwine-pairing suggestions. All in all, this book provides a handy recipe for embracing the good life by celebrating the best of food and wine. --Robin Donovan ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars White Chocolate Trouble and Sodium Surprise
We had a go at the White Chocolate Truffle and Raspberry tart.
We followed all the steps verbatim, and truth be told- it looked outstanding. Lucky for us it was ours alone to enjoy- or so we thought. Turns out we were lucky there was nobody else there to curse us for serving it to them.
It met its demise on the pavement by the dumpster outside our house. We thought we had seen the last of it, but when we awoke the next morning, it greeted us with open arms and a note reading "Thanks a lot a**hole we'd rather eat rats". We're pretty sure we weren't too discriminating. A complete disaster.
The crust was terrible- who thought this recipe up? The white chocolate truffle filling somehow managed to taste like salted lard (and we used unsalted butter as the recipe indicated).

A public apology should be in order. Nasty stuff, Dean & Deluca!

Ceramic is the material of choice for over-the-candle warming because it holds in the heat without letting the flame burn your butter or damage the delicate texture of your sauce. These petite, white his-and-her pots hold about 3/4 cup of your favorite dip. Dainty wire stands suspend the pots at an appropriate distance from the tea light. 5-0 out of 5 stars An alternative to heating butter in the microwave
If you love eating shrimp, lobster or crab and want to have butter to dip in the delicasies, this is a good choice. Uses inexpensive tea light candles.

First saw these at a restaurant and thought it
was a great idea for home use.

Can be used to heat sauces or just butter to
    the perfect temperature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
These work well and keep the butter nice and warm while adding a nice touch to the presentation.I use them often and love them. The ramekins are good for other uses as well.

This set of "butter warmers" are an excellent way to serveresturant style dinners in the comfort of your own home.Whether it isbutter sauce for crab legs or lobster or warm chocolate sauce for ice creamor cheesecake, you can't beat this set.The dishes are large enough tohandle a quantity needed for dinner. My husband has found that they are agreat accessory for his hot air popcorn popper. The prices is extrememlyreasonable.I even found a matching fondue set to finish this display. Once you use these you will wonder how you ever made it without them.Thetea light refills are very afforable and more versatile that sterno.Ihave 2 sets and plan to order more before the holidays.I can't wait tomake my holiday eggs benedict for the family and use these warmers for theholandaise sause. No more re-heating butters and sauces in the middle ofthe meal. ... The Thomas Crown Affair

    Editorial Review

For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, The Thomas Crown Affair stands as a glorious exception. The original 1968 film, starring a dapper Steve McQueen and a radiant Faye Dunaway, was a diverting pop confection of mod clothes and nifty break-ins, but not much more. John McTiernan's new version, though, cranks up the entertainment factor to mach speed, turning what was a languid flick into a high-adrenaline caper romance. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is now a man of industry who likes to indulge in a little high-priced art theft on the side; Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is the insurance investigator determined to get on his tail in more ways than one. If you're thinking cat-and-mouse game, think again--it's more like cat vs. smarter cat, as both the thief and the investigator try to outwit each other and nothing is off-limits, especially after they start a highly charged love affair that's a heated mix of business and pleasure.

What makes this Thomas Crown more enjoyable than its predecesor is McTiernan's attention to detail in both the set action pieces (no surprise from the man who helmed Die Hard with precision accuracy) and the developing romance, the witty and intelligent script by Leslie Dixon (she wrote the love scenes) and Kurt Wimmer (he wrote the action scenes), and, most of all, its two stunning leads (both over 40 to boot), combustible both in and out of bed. Brosnan, usually held prisoner in the James Bond straitjacket, lets loose with both a relaxed sensuality and a comic spirit he's rarely expressed before. The film, however, pretty much belongs to Russo, who doesn't just steal the spotlight, but bends it to her will. Beautiful, stylish, smart, self-possessed, incredibly sexy, she's practically a walking icon; it's no wonder Crown falls for her hook, line, and sinker. With Denis Leary as a police detective smitten with Russo, and Faye Dunaway in a throwaway but wholly enjoyable cameo as Brosnan's therapist. --Mark Englehart ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it & I'm not an action movie fan
I really loved this movie, and I'm not normally a fan of action movies. For the wives reading this, if you want a "guy movie" for your hubby, this is the one to get him that you will enjoy watching with him. There is fine part, romance, and some steamy loves scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sequel better than a great original
For anyone who has not seen the original Thomas Crown Affair I would highly recommend it. I have seen the current version countless times and watched the original for the first time last week. Pierce Brosnan owns the role of Thomas Crown which should be suggested by the upcoming sequel "The Topkapi Affair". Mcqueen had a tough time relaxing in the original like Brosnan does so easily. The idea of stealing a piece of art in the middle of the day is also much more interesting than a bank robbery, although it was well orchestrated. I was glad to see that Crown was actually involved in the heist this time around. The locations of the second one make you feel like you are there. From Crown's apartment to the Cipriani restaurant, to Martinique the films locations spice everything up just enough. I enjoyed the fact that the movies shared many seens like the golfing and the glider planes. It is imperitive that you see both versions to truly appreciate how good both films are. It is a relief to know that we can still see movies with some class even today.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was an AWESOME Movie!
I sat down to watch this movie and was literally enthralled with the Cat Vs Cat in the movie!I thought it was a very up-to-date story line, sexy, smart and funny all at the same time!I haven't watched the first one, and after this one, I don't care to.The reality is, that we rarely get to watch a really SMART movie, that makes the audience really try to figure out who is playing who!

I enjoyed all aspects of the movie, and buy only movies that I want to watch over and over.Needless to say, this is in my collection on VHS.I couldn't find it for some reason a while ago, and went and got another copy! Now I'm onto buying a DVD for this, because they just last longer.

I expect to be able to enjoy this movie for years to come, and each time I watch it, I catch some detail I had missed before.

Kudos to John McTiernan, Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo ~ Cast and Crew! Thanks for a great, enjoyable, don't know how it's going to end movie, with lots of surprises, twists and turns!

I loved it! ... Read more

As learned from the broad-based popularity of his previous albums, people turn to saxophonist Boney James to do one thing: create sultry audio backdrops well suited for mingling, small talk, and romantic notions. James, rotating between tenor, soprano, and alto saxophones, faithfully delivers more of those goods on this, his sixth album. The mood sustained throughout all nine tracks (42-plus minutes runtime) is urbane, low-key, and cue-ball smooth. Chelle Davis provides breathy background vocals on the slow-grooving opening track, "Are You Ready?" and R&B crooners Shai take a more foreground role on the sweetly disarming "I'll Always Love You." Perhaps the album's most attractive cut is the slow urban crawl of "Boneyizm," with subdued interplay between James's tenor sax and Rick Braun's flügelhorn. Nothing shrill, outrageous, new, or significant awaits here, simply an engaging and pleasant listen. --Terry Wood ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Body Language
It boggles the mind that you can actaully buy used CDs of this album, becuase I cannot understand why anyone whose owned and listened to this CD would actually part with it.This is one of the best albums Boney James has ever done, second only to Pure.Boneyism is a decent song, but not quite as good as everything else, so I gave this CD 4 stars. My personal favorites are the title track, Bedtime Story, and Lovefest, mostly because of the awesome string arrangement that starts it off.I advise anyone who doesn't already have this CD to go pick it up.It's definitely worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful smooth jazz classic!
Gosh! Has it been more than five full years since this album came out? It feels like yesterday when I blasted this CD in my car stereo when driving near Mt. Vernon near D.C. and the lovely melodies came out of the speakers and I have never forgotten the wonderful experience of that night.

This CD by the way is absolutely wonderful to listen to and has all of the punch that it had back when it was released back in early 1999. Every song is great. "Are You Ready" is pure musical ecstacy with it's seductive saxophone and beautiful soulful style. Included on here is a wonderful cover version of Janet Jackson's 1998 hit "I Get Lonely" which is really wonderful. Both the original and Boney James' versions are great. The album closes with the seductive groove "All Night Long".

5-0 out of 5 stars HAMEDORI!! ,but sound good !
This jacket reminds me of a word,HAMEDORI,If you don't know the meaning of the word ask your Japanese friend nearby. But the sound of this CD is not only a HAMEDORI,but also a funky, sticky stuff for me.I am an average truck driver in Japan, and too heavy traffic jam on high ways always drives me crazy. One day I happened to hear this saxman BONEY on the radio,I was almost relaxed.Every timeI get irritated in my car,I trey to calm myself down and hear this CD.Don't do HAMEDORI. It's a crime in Japan.Do hear this CD.and you are almost in paradise.
Thank you BONEY !!Have a safe driving, folks! ... Read more

Tall, slim, and shapely, this 55-watt fan uses little space but cools aroom easily with high-performance centrifugal blades invisible inside the fan'sgleaming, hard-plastic housing. Electronic controls, available either on thefan's control panel or the remote control, provide exceptional versatility. There are three speeds, an on/off button for the wide-range oscillationfunction, a timer, and two special modes (breeze, which varies speeds, andsleep, which gradually slows the fan down). You can program the fan to gradually slow down over afour-hour period, for example. The fan stands 40 inches high and measures 6-1/2inches square. 4-0 out of 5 stars good quiet fan
This fan will cool the house very well. And it is very quiet.I found that the highest settings (there are 3 levels) can be a bit noisy but I have never needed them.

We use them in the office and when we sleep at night. In both cases the cool quite breeze is very refreshing. There are a few other settings but I only seem to need the oscillate option.

In short this is a good fan that surely wont disappoint you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this fan
I bought this for 47.99 and it lasted one full summer and two months into the 2nd one before it died.I believe that it is over priced and not worth what I paid for it - I have replaced it with one from a discount store for 19.99 which has the same tower styling and also has a remote and is quieter -Save your moneyon this one

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan of this fan- it is a unique piece of furniture
Ok, so I just moved from the West Coast to the East Coast almost two years ago and I didn't really understand what it meant when people said that it gets humid.Well, I call it getting sticky or muggy.Air conditioning is great, but it gives you that refrigerator feeling that it is cold for no reason- it feels unnatural and if you don't get a breeze from the air conditioner, after a while you start feeling too cold.Plus, an air conditioner uses a lot of electricity and is noisy.

I have never seen a fan like this before and I do not know anyone who owns one, but just read the reviews and saw it on discount at Amazon. The price is comparable to those conventional round bladed fans, but what you get is so much more aesthetically pleasing. Now that I own one, I don't understand why people want an uglyier, larger round bladed fan in their home.

The Bioniare Tower Fan is sophisticated- it has a remote control, multiple timer/sleep settings, oscillation, and a simulated breeze function. Also, it is quiet enough at the low setting, is powerful (almost too powerful for a small bedroom), and takes up a minimal amount of space.Even though it has been around for some time, it looks modern and somewhat euro.

When I first got it and assembled it (8 screws), it made a subtle clicking sound on almost every rotation of the blades. It wasn't loud, but was a little annoying.I cured that noise by shaking the fan forward- I guess that recentered the blades (your fan may require another direction). Now, the fan is silent while gushing out a soothing flow of air.I highly recommend this fan.It is easily the most interesting, reasonably price, and useful item I have purchase online. How often can one say that? ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Item shown is not what you receive
I ordered a Cuisinart DTC-950, which is a coffeemaker with a 10- cup thermal carafe, and I printed out the order which went through Cooking.com.However I received Cuisinart DCC-1200W, which has a 12-cup glass carafe.Customer Service at Cooking.com said I had received the one I ordered, so product information shown online is not always correct. Buyer Beware!

1-0 out of 5 stars Want a gift for someone you don't really like?
I recently purchased the DTC-950 with the "stainless" carafe. It was not a good choice. I can tolerate one or two flaws in a product design, but this had so many it had to go back.

Flaw 1: The carafe is glass on the inside, not metal as you might exepect. The carafe HAS to be preheated every time you use the machine or it may break. You can set the timer to make coffee for you in the morning, but you have to wake up before it starts to preheat the carafe!

Flaw 2: The carafe is not dishwasher safe.In fact, you cannot even immerse it in water to wash it.

Flaw 3: The pour thorugh cap that is designed to keep air out makes pouring a single cup of coffee a ridiculously slow, drawn out process.

Flaw 4: The water fill graduation lines are difficult (if not impossible) to read from the front of the machine.

Flaw 5: The carafe does a very poor job of retaining heat. After less than two hours, the coffee was only lukewark and had to be zapped in order to get it at a good drinking temp.

Also, for a supposedly higher end machine, I would have though that Cuisinart would have included a gold-tone filter.

So, if you want to drive someone crazy, send them this machine and let them deal with it. I don't know of anyone I feel passive aggressive towards (at the moment) so ours is getting returned.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, badly made
I also loved the coffee, but only had the coffeemaker for a short time. The glass shattered within a month (Cuisinart wouldn't help me at all).I bought a new plastic carafe, and within a week of getting it, the electronics started to go.It just wouldn't turn on most mornings. After a touchy week, it died.

I would love to get another because I loved the idea so was checking out the site to see if others had similar problems.Cuisinart didn't seem to care at all, which was a bummer. ... Read more
