Dean & DeLuca: The Food and Wine Cookbook Average Customer Review: Hardcover (April, 2002) list price: $35.00 -- our price: $22.05 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When they opened their first store in 1977, Joel Dean and Giorgio DeLuca's mission was to spread the gospel of good eating. Today the very name Dean & DeLuca conjures up visions of the holy land for seekers of fine cheeses, charcuterie, and fresh-baked artisan breads. In Dean & DeLuca: The Food and Wine Cookbook, D&D wine director Jeff Morgan celebrates the sublime marriage of D&D's original old-world concept--offering top-quality international culinary selections--and the influence of California's diverse wines. Beginning with a veritable "California Wine 101" course, Morgan details a concise history of California winemaking from pre-gold rush days through the dry gulch of Prohibition and onward to glory in the 1980s. Also included are primers on the chief varietals and the basics of pairing wine with food. The recipes, which range from uncomplicated to fairly ambitious, and from economical to downright indulgent, are both inventive and inviting. Simple dishes like Chilled Yellow Tomato Soup with Guacamole, and Fish Soup with Artichoke Hearts and Artichoke Aioli highlight the best of California's bounty, while Lobster, Cabernet, and Shitake Soup, or Caviar Soufflé provide opportunities to revel in the elegant. Clever twists on more usual dishes are also well represented: Chile-Pecan Chicken Breasts with Honey Mustard Glaze, Garlic Pork Chops with Sauvignon Beurre Blanc, and Saffron Chardonnay Risotto offer welcome variety. Not all of the recipes include wine as an ingredient, but each includes helpfulwine-pairing suggestions. All in all, this book provides a handy recipe for embracing the good life by celebrating the best of food and wine. --Robin Donovan ... Read more Reviews (2)

The Thomas Crown Affair by Director: John McTiernan Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (02 November, 2004) list price: $9.94 -- our price: $9.44 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, The Thomas Crown Affair stands as a glorious exception. The original 1968 film, starring a dapper Steve McQueen and a radiant Faye Dunaway, was a diverting pop confection of mod clothes and nifty break-ins, but not much more. John McTiernan's new version, though, cranks up the entertainment factor to mach speed, turning what was a languid flick into a high-adrenaline caper romance. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is now a man of industry who likes to indulge in a little high-priced art theft on the side; Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is the insurance investigator determined to get on his tail in more ways than one. If you're thinking cat-and-mouse game, think again--it's more like cat vs. smarter cat, as both the thief and the investigator try to outwit each other and nothing is off-limits, especially after they start a highly charged love affair that's a heated mix of business and pleasure. What makes this Thomas Crown more enjoyable than its predecesor is McTiernan's attention to detail in both the set action pieces (no surprise from the man who helmed Die Hard with precision accuracy) and the developing romance, the witty and intelligent script by Leslie Dixon (she wrote the love scenes) and Kurt Wimmer (he wrote the action scenes), and, most of all, its two stunning leads (both over 40 to boot), combustible both in and out of bed. Brosnan, usually held prisoner in the James Bond straitjacket, lets loose with both a relaxed sensuality and a comic spirit he's rarely expressed before. The film, however, pretty much belongs to Russo, who doesn't just steal the spotlight, but bends it to her will. Beautiful, stylish, smart, self-possessed, incredibly sexy, she's practically a walking icon; it's no wonder Crown falls for her hook, line, and sinker. With Denis Leary as a police detective smitten with Russo, and Faye Dunaway in a throwaway but wholly enjoyable cameo as Brosnan's therapist. --Mark Englehart ... Read more Features Reviews (284)

Body Language Average Customer Review: Audio CD (23 February, 1999) list price: $13.98 -- our price: $13.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review As learned from the broad-based popularity of his previous albums, people turn to saxophonist Boney James to do one thing: create sultry audio backdrops well suited for mingling, small talk, and romantic notions. James, rotating between tenor, soprano, and alto saxophones, faithfully delivers more of those goods on this, his sixth album. The mood sustained throughout all nine tracks (42-plus minutes runtime) is urbane, low-key, and cue-ball smooth. Chelle Davis provides breathy background vocals on the slow-grooving opening track, "Are You Ready?" and R&B crooners Shai take a more foreground role on the sweetly disarming "I'll Always Love You." Perhaps the album's most attractive cut is the slow urban crawl of "Boneyizm," with subdued interplay between James's tenor sax and Rick Braun's flügelhorn. Nothing shrill, outrageous, new, or significant awaits here, simply an engaging and pleasant listen. --Terry Wood ... Read more Reviews (67)

Bionaire BTF40RC Tower Fan with Remote Control Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $89.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Tall, slim, and shapely, this 55-watt fan uses little space but cools aroom easily with high-performance centrifugal blades invisible inside the fan'sgleaming, hard-plastic housing. Electronic controls, available either on thefan's control panel or the remote control, provide exceptional versatility. There are three speeds, an on/off button for the wide-range oscillationfunction, a timer, and two special modes (breeze, which varies speeds, andsleep, which gradually slows the fan down). The timer works in half-hourincrements up to 7-1/2 hours. Combined with the breeze and sleep modes, thetimer will work wonders. You can program the fan to gradually slow down over afour-hour period, for example. The fan stands 40 inches high and measures 6-1/2inches square. It assembles easily with eight screws (included) and carries afive-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more Features Reviews (36)
We use them in the office and when we sleep at night. In both cases the cool quite breeze is very refreshing. There are a few other settings but I only seem to need the oscillate option. In short this is a good fan that surely wont disappoint you.
I have never seen a fan like this before and I do not know anyone who owns one, but just read the reviews and saw it on discount at Amazon. The price is comparable to those conventional round bladed fans, but what you get is so much more aesthetically pleasing. Now that I own one, I don't understand why people want an uglyier, larger round bladed fan in their home. The Bioniare Tower Fan is sophisticated- it has a remote control, multiple timer/sleep settings, oscillation, and a simulated breeze function. Also, it is quiet enough at the low setting, is powerful (almost too powerful for a small bedroom), and takes up a minimal amount of space.Even though it has been around for some time, it looks modern and somewhat euro. When I first got it and assembled it (8 screws), it made a subtle clicking sound on almost every rotation of the blades. It wasn't loud, but was a little annoying.I cured that noise by shaking the fan forward- I guess that recentered the blades (your fan may require another direction). Now, the fan is silent while gushing out a soothing flow of air.I highly recommend this fan.It is easily the most interesting, reasonably price, and useful item I have purchase online. How often can one say that? ... Flaw 1: The carafe is glass on the inside, not metal as you might exepect. The carafe HAS to be preheated every time you use the machine or it may break. You can set the timer to make coffee for you in the morning, but you have to wake up before it starts to preheat the carafe! Flaw 2: The carafe is not dishwasher safe.In fact, you cannot even immerse it in water to wash it. Flaw 3: The pour thorugh cap that is designed to keep air out makes pouring a single cup of coffee a ridiculously slow, drawn out process. Flaw 4: The water fill graduation lines are difficult (if not impossible) to read from the front of the machine. Flaw 5: The carafe does a very poor job of retaining heat. After less than two hours, the coffee was only lukewark and had to be zapped in order to get it at a good drinking temp. Also, for a supposedly higher end machine, I would have though that Cuisinart would have included a gold-tone filter. So, if you want to drive someone crazy, send them this machine and let them deal with it. I don't know of anyone I feel passive aggressive towards (at the moment) so ours is getting returned.
I would love to get another because I loved the idea so was checking out the site to see if others had similar problems.Cuisinart didn't seem to care at all, which was a bummer. ... Read more Asin: B00005O71L |
