    Evel Knievel's Spectacular Jumps

    Editorial Review

The greatest jumps of the legendary motorcycle daredevil are containedin Evel Knievel's Spectacular Jumps, which also includes footage ofKnievel commenting on specific stunts, the injuries he sustained, and hismotivations for following such a bizarre and dangerous occupation. A total of 11jumps are shown, including the bone-crushing disaster at Caesar's Palace in LasVegas that left Knievel unconscious for a month and his ill-conceived attempt tojump the Snake River Canyon in a small rocket. An unavoidable flaw with thisproduction is that the film footage of Knievel in his prime looks quaintcompared to today's multi-angle saturation coverage of daredevil events. On theother hand, the vintage early-'70s clips do capture the oddball carnivalatmosphere in which Knievel performed. People paid to see him risk his life, andhe'd put on quite a show, arriving in a rhinestone-studded leather cape andgetting the crowd revved by performing a series of wheelies prior to the bigevent. Motorcycle jumps don't take long, of course, and this entire DVD clocksin at only 30 minutes. And while some perspective on Knievel's life might havemade for a more interesting production, his comments about the jumps and a fewvintage clips of him speaking to the crowds provide a glimpse of his eccentricpersonality. --Robert J. I grew up in the 1970's and Evel Knievel was one of my idols so I am going to be a bit biased. If you were a fan of the King of the Stuntman then this is a must have.My only disppointment with the DVD is that it is too short.I was hoping for a two or three looks at each jump.Of course, you can rewind it and even slow it down on DVD.It would have been neat to spotlight not only his jumps but how he breathed life into IDEAL Toys with all the Evel Knievel toys that came out in the 1970's.If only I would have kept all of those toys!!! ... Editorial Review

Australian director Peter Weir had made several excellent films before The Year of Living Dangerously was released to critical acclaim in 1983, but it was this moody tale of romance and political upheaval that bought Weir and star Mel Gibson their tickets to Hollywood. (Weir's next film was the 1985 Harrison Ford hit Witness.) Set in Indonesia in 1965, the film focuses on a group of Caucasian journalists and photographers who are in Jakarta to cover the political upheavals that are threatening to collapse the unstable government of President Sukarno. Gibson plays an Australian correspondent named Guy Hamilton who's determined to get the best story, and he's given invaluable assistance from Billy Kwan (Linda Hunt), a half-Indonesian, half-Australian photojournalist who knows the culture inside and out. Billy introduces Guy to Jill (Sigourney Weaver) and their romance develops in an atmosphere of political unrest and constant personal danger. This journalistic adventure is compelling in itself (and Hunt's gender-switching performance won her a much-deserved Oscar), but it's Weir's creation of a rich, authentically exotic locale that gives the movie its alluring and subtly mysterious atmosphere. A tale of tragedy and survival, it's also a story about fascinating people at a turbulent juncture of history, and the empathy they feel for each other and the culture that surrounds them. --Jeff Shannon ... 1-0 out of 5 stars NO stars
This DVD is why people violate copyright laws.
This movie is UNWATCHABLE to the point of being DEFECTIVE!
It's obviously cut to shreds, sound doesn't match the picture, and THATS only when you can hear or understand it!
Can I return it, even for store credit? NO, of course not!
Next time, I'll beg, borrow or steal it and copy it if it's any good.
The movie and audio industry has been stealing their customer's money for years- to He&$ with copyright laws!

1-0 out of 5 stars Technical information on this DVD is WRONG
This is one of my top 20, desert isle, favorite movies. Gibson, Weaver, Hunt, Weir, composer Maurice Jarre (with a track by Vangelis), are all marvelous. It's an adult romance, with conflicting desires ("All is clouded by desire, Arjuna," Billy recites to Guy), political obligations, and personal ambitions. Add to that, Weir directs this film as if the protagonist is passing through a dream, echoing the film's allusions to the wayang, Indonesian shadow plays, retelling myths as dreamlike performances.

Just bought this disc on closeout at Wal-Mart (unopened, sealed by the manufacturer). Alas, this release is mislabeled by Warner Bros. as containing an English stereo track. FALSE ADVERTISING! The Dolby Digital track is only one channel (as well as a French mono and Spanish mono tracks). Doubly disappointing because the soundtrack, and Jarre's music, were lush and vivid on this film. This DVD release (part number 65068) also states it contains pan 'n scan STANDARD as well as WIDESCREEN versions on the disc. The DVD only has a 16:9 anamorphic widescreen version. This isn't Amazon's fault, but something I will take up with Warner Bros. directly. Buyer beware....

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I have watched a lot of dramatic movies, but this one just didn't grip me. One of the things that I found awkward was the 1980's score -it was just too imposing. Also, the visual quality was not that great on the DVD. However, it's still a fair insight into what was going on in Indonesia in 1965. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars oh well
When Keith's two solo records came out , (especially the first), the comparison to Mick's solo efforts made Keith's seem to be works of genius. A lot of time gone by has put this stuff into the broader perspective of Stones work in general ,and specifically, the best Stones stuff. Keith's hoarse voice seemed soulful at first, now it just seems limited...the band trackshave a rawness that at first gave me the feeling of being on the inside of the process, but now it's time for them to be more finished, and of course, they never -can- be....The real shame is that, while Mick records can , for the most part, be ignored, Keith's can not, because they could have been great Stones records, with a little more work, and course, the Stones.

4-0 out of 5 stars keith forever
When Mick Jagger listened to Keith Richards' first solo album said that the sound of the drums was too loud. I am not sure that that was true with regard to Talk is Cheap (1988), but it is certainly true with regard to Main Offender (Keith's second studio album, released in 1992).
The record is nice and there are several nice songs. My favorite ones are Eileen, Hate it When You Leave and, above all, Words of Wonder, which shows that Keith Richards is an extraordinary reggae musician.
Main Offender is not as good, as interesting, as intense as Talk is Cheap had been few years before. But it is certainly a record worth listening to.

1-0 out of 5 stars THE WORST OF KEITH RICHARDS MUSIC
I'm a fan of THE STONES & KEITH but this is just throw away filler.

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better...
The cover is misleading. Many of the stories in the collection are not "Sport" at all. These are views into dangerous activities, which range from essays on rescue workers off the coast of Northern California to introspective musings on the chainsaw.Others are indeed sports, though not the type you view on ESPN; these are stories of individuals who have concocted their own unique flavor of excitement: from storm kayaking in the Pacific to leaping off high bridges. Todhunter is fascinated by risk and danger and the people who engage in these activities.

Whether climbing vertical ice or diving beneath frozen lakes, Todhunter delivers crisp, clean, first-hand insight, with a full shot of adrenaline in the mix.An experienced diver and climber, Todhunter plays at times neophyte, apprentice, novice, and savvy traveler (in measure with his experience) all with equal grace. He shares his far-flung interests in high-adrenaline experiences with a literary style that inspires rapt, hypnotic, page-turning awe.

5-0 out of 5 stars what it's like to be there
Whether or not you are an ice climber, a diver for wrecks, or someone who explores the depths of caves, all of which the writer is, Todhunter can make you feel you've been there, oftenwith amazing descriptions, sometimes beautiful, sometimes chilling. Cases in point, a couple of brief samples from the chapter called "Beneath the ice."

"Far above the triangle [cut through the ice of a Sierra lake]is aglow in the dimly translucent field of ice. Our lines stretch upward, vanishing. I give a firm tug: "Okay." A tug comes back fom my tender. "Acknowledged." The trail of air bubbles works its way to the surface, rumbling faintly. I take a deep breath and expel it with one quick contraction of the diaphragm. The body of air breaks into three spheres that flatten into mushrooms the diammeter of dinner plates, expanding as they climb. Surrounded by a host of smaller bubbles, 100 silver dollars, 1,000 dimes--twirling in their wake, the three upturned bowls of air catch the sun as they near the surface, gleam like mirrors, and disappear."

And its ending [as they come up]:"On the other side of the ice, our tenders set off like sled dogs on the run. The lines go aut and we begin to move, gaining speed. Howling through our regulators, we ski upside down across the ice.The wedge of blue sky suddenly appears, hurtling toward us. As I dive headfirst through the triangle I'm blinded. I look straight down into thesun." ... Read more

A small backpack (she travels light) straps toher shoulders, and other adornments include silver hoop earrings and aHarley bandana that fastens around her neck. Though her long, straight hairhangs loose--to catch the breeze, of course--she caps it with a black helmet.Barbie cannot stand unsupported, but she is fully jointed and easy to pose. She even swivels at the elbows, waist, and hips. Editorial Review

The script for this movie was written by outrageous poet-author-alcoholic Charles Bukowski. But director Barbet Schroeder makes it into an oddly amusing story of a pugnacious drunk writer (Mickey Rourke) based on Bukowski himself. Rourke spends almost all of his time at the bar, struggling with sobriety (he's against it) and, occasionally, having fistfights with the bartender (Frank Stallone). He meets another souse, a formerly attractive woman (Faye Dunaway), and gets involved with her, which means they drink copious amounts of liquor and try to have sex. Not much happens beyond that, yet this film is strangely entertaining, for all of its bottom-of-the-barrel humanity. Maybe that's the secret: "Oh, the humanity...." --Marshall Fine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How Come This Drunk Can ALWAYS Afford Cigarettes And Scotch?
Watching this movie calls for an immense "Suspension Of Disbelief " on te part of the viewer which I could not quite accomplish. It concerns astreet drunk named Henry who spends most of his time drinking at the seedy Golden Horn Bar in Los Angeles. He gets to have sex with another drunk named Wanda (played by Faye Dunaway) and he doesn't even remember the sexual encounter the next day!!! Is this unbelievable or what? I am pretty sure if I had sex with a woman like Wanda I would remember the encounter. Then he gets to have sex with Tully Sorensen played by Alice Krige. For some obscure reason which is never explained Henry has no visible means of support or income yet he never runs out of cigarettes and always seems to have money for another Scotch and water. He also never has a hangover or loses his lunch and doesn't even get close to having a case of the D.T.'s in this movie.Henry spends a lot of time having contempt for people with money (who he secretly envies) and yet when he is offered a place to live in a Upper Class part of Los Angeles he declines the offer. I do feel very sad that this movie may have inspired a whole generation of young men to pick up the bottle in the sadly mistaken belief that they will get to have sex with beautiful women too. I give this movie 5 stars nbecause I do like Faye Dunaway .

2-0 out of 5 stars WHY??
Mickey Rourke plays a Los Angeles bum who also writes poetry (it's about the real life Charles Bukowski, whose short story this is based on). He hangs out in a gin mill and gets beat up a lot. A rich publisher tries to get him onto the "right" track, even falls for him a little, but he won't have any of it. The movie is pretty downbeat and unenjoyable, though Rourke and his skidrow moll Faye Dunaway act it out fairly well. It's just by the end - who cares?

5-0 out of 5 stars 12 Steps is one step too Many. Pour me another...
Gonzo poet, writer, rebel, wild man and veteran Barfly without peer Charles Bukowski cranked out the script and guerilla filmmaker Barbet Schroeder wielded the camera for this pungent, wicked, hysterical tale of Hell itself: it is nothing other than the Damned with Drinks and the Dive Bar as steaming Hellpit. It's also huge tanker truckloads of fun. Drink up, the rounds are on me!

Mickey Rourke, then at the height of his powers, plays Bukowski stand-in and poet-genius-drunkard Henry Chinaski, who would love to write fantastic world-famous poetry and become wildly wealthy and idle his days away listening to Handel and chumming on caviar---but you know, a man's gotta have a First Love, and Henry does: Lady Booze, and boy is Henry faithful. What they hey! It's much easier to head down to the local watering hole, you know, and have just one shot. Just one shot.

Just one, c'mon Man, you know?

Consequently Henry is witty, sharp, caustic, totally disgusting, lives in a rat & cockroach infested flophouse, has meandering chatter sessions and fumbled sleepwalker sex with fellow drunkard Wanda Wilcox (Faye Dunaway who looks all bleary-eyed and tilts that bottle back like a champ! You go, girl!), and passes out in his own urine.

Publisher Tully Sorenson (Alice Krige, at the height of her powers and still eleven years away from her role as Borg Queen) discovers Henry: she's shocked by his nastiness and, simultaneously, by his genius. She wants to publish his poems. She wants to throw a life preserver down to Henry, with which he can escape the big old wine-dark sea of Old Grand-Dad in which he swims.

Guess what happens? Yeah, that's right, have another drink.

Anyway, underrated genius Barbet Schroeder and Charles Bukowski make a kind of diabolic duo in turning out this rummy-headed little epic of mind-boggling personal destruction. I don't know about Barbet (though the guy must have been fortifying himself with whiskey when he shot the amazing documentary "General Idi Amin Dada", which if you haven't seen, you should---hell, make it a double feature with "Barfly"), but Bukowski, who drank his way around the world---from Nazi Germany to seedy back alley L.A. dive bars---over the course of his 74 years on the planet---knows himself and knows his Enemy. His expertise shows.

The dialogue is funny and rings true. And cinematographer Robert Muller is just too cool for school here: you can practically feel the grime and smell the stale sweet rank stench of sour whiskey and sweat. And hey!---Buk himself puts in an appearance as a bar patron. Hey there, is that glass empty?

The acting is all first-rate: Mickey Rourke completely owns this movie. Completely. He actually pulls it off: he makes the life of a half-crazed almost totally out of his mind teeth-grinding wild-man look glamorous. I bought it. Faye Dunaway carries off the role of her career. Krige looks like a sturdy, stoic tugboat hitched to the stern of a swiftly sinking Titanic. Frank Stallone shows up as the angry barman! Jack Nance (of "Twin Peaks" fame and loyal David Lynch stable actor) puts in an appearance as the tricky detective. The script is crisp and crackles and rocks and rolls: frankly, I think this one gives David Mamet a run for his money; see if you don't agree.

In the end, we get to laugh it up and share a round or two or three---um, or four---with people who are disintegrating before our eyes, albeit in the funniest, most completely honest way possible. Henry is totally right: "Anyone can be a non-drunk: it takes a special talent to be a drunk---it takes endurance." That much is true: Henry and Wanda's "life" is chewing them up. Why this is Hell, nor am I out of it. Drink up! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Reckless look at the Ouija Board!
Although there is some interesting and useful information concerning the history of the Ouija Board and what can happen by using one, it is rather reckless because it also instructs people in the use of this dangerous device.

I have had a very real and bad experience after using a ouija board and they are not games. They are occult devices and no one should fool with them for there could be serious consequences. It is rather reckless for Stoker to instruct people in its operation.

I advise against this book and against the use of any ouija board ever.

A better book on this subject is Edmund C. Gruss's The Ouija Board: A Doorway to the Occult.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this radar detector !!!
This detector is awesome. It has saved me hundreds of dollars in tickets, hardly ever false alarms, and always gives me more than enough warning, of upcoming radar. And the portability is pricelesss.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just an average detector
My first detector was a Bel 890, i enjoyed its ditgal voice message, free the drive from have to look at the detector.I only bought this one because it was a cordless and thinking it would make driving in VA or DC easier.Little did i know that a cordless has far less detection range. The difference in the range with or without the optional cord is like night and day. So i had to purchase the optional coiled power cord.I would recommend anyone who wants a detector with the cord out of sight to by a normal detector with straight power cord or direct connection cord and not this cordless detector. To say nothing of many the false alarms this one has.I have since bought a Bel 985 and highly recommend you do the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars Escort Solo Radar Detector
I am very dissapointed with this product. I have owned and used it daily for about 10 months. It will detect K band radar only when you are within 400 feet of the gun. It is virtually useless in detecting Ka band unless you're within 50 feet of the gun. It also falsely detects Ka band very frequently especially on sunny days when it has been sitting on the dashboard for 15 minutes. The laser detector also goes off quite often. The X band detector went off so often in business areas (even with the x band sensitivity set to poor in city mode) that I disabled it.

Escort advertises the following on their website:

"Long-range warning for all radar signals: including "instant-on" X-band, K-band, and SuperWide Ka-band. Patented Digital Signal
Processing provides long-range warning distances, without increased false alarms."

I guess their definition of "long range" is a few hundred feet.

So save your money and don't waste it on this product. ... Read more

26 cuts of "gangsta rap" that only increase in doom when you realize the guy talking it didn't live to laugh about it. Perhaps he now knows the answer to his question, "I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto," which shows up here twice. Shakur, like most hard rappers, liked to sound tough, kicking it with song titles unprintable in a family newspaper. But, underneath the braggadocio, there was fear. "Only Fear of Death," "Nothing to Lose," and "I'm Losin' It" tell a far different story than "Fake Ass Bitches." The first disc has good songs like "Open Fire", "R U still down", "I wonder if heaven got a ghetto", F*** all y'all, and "let them thangs go". The second disc has good songs like "Ready 4 whatever", Fake A** B******, "do for love", "16 on death row", " I wonder if heaven got a ghetto (Hip Hop Version), "When I get free 2",and the best song on the album "Only fear of death".The album has some dissapointing productions but when pac starts it dont matter. His voice for me can be basically played over anything. Some other great albums are "Me against the world", "All eyez on me", and "Greatist hits". I've heard of the new album that came out internationally called "Ready 2 die" Jan 31. But united states didnt get it, cant wait til it comes.

ALL I GOTTA SAY IS MAKAVELI IS THE BEST FOR EVER
    R.I.P.

2-0 out of 5 stars R U Still Listening? (Forget This)
While 2pac's lyrics shine through the songs, over half of the songs are overly repeditive both with the beats (which are simple and sound the same), a voice you hear on songs and interludes which makes it sound like someone was inhaling a little too much laughing gas, and lyrics which are filled with "Bury me a G!" and "Thug Life Baby!"

With stand out tracks "Nothing To Lose (Disk one)" and "I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto (Hip-Hop version -- disk two)," it is still a nice CD, but I would recommend Better Dayz. The production is different which makes all the tracks stand out in thier own way and you will never put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars The second best 2pac album
there are two 2pac album who rock:
    "all eyez on me"
and... "r u still down? (remeber me)"
    this album is super great.
each song has it own image he own...topic which means,
tupac had heart for everything. he was a really great person.
i am an artist on my starting way and i'm from israel so i learn
and get ideas for songs from pac. he rocks everything.
i love this album in peticular b-cus of the songs, they still talks for real. so buy this as fast as you can, if you like tupac. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This compact 1,200-watt machine automatically produces espresso with the push of a button. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. Other noteworthy features include a removable 30-serving water tank with an intake water filter and water-level display, an antidrip system, a patented filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, and a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes. A coffee tamper and measuring spoon accompany the 11-3/4-by-8-3/4-by-8-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Durability
Worked great out of the box, although the electronic controls were erratic and hard to set. Made good espresso.

However, after about 18 months, I have to throw it away and buy something else. It is gradually self-destructing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bang for the buck
I purchasd this unit for my fiance 2+ years ago for Christmas and we couldn't be more impressed.I consulted with a close friend who used to run a coffee shop, and he suggested this model, and it has never disappointed.Makes a quick and strong esspresso, has great settings to control the strength of brew, and is easy to operate. The only (small) complaint is the small space where the espresso is dispensed - there is only room for an espresso cup or something short.Makes a beautiful creamy brew.I do highly reccomend that you only use filtered or bottled water in the unit to keep it from getting build-up lime/scaling.We have only just de-scaled ours for the first timeafter 27+ months of use.The clean water makes a big difference, and a better quality brew.

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy initial setup, bad quality coffee + hard handling
When we bought the machine we were hoping for something easy to setup, but make decent coffee.

The first is true, it's not that difficult. However, you run into numerous problems pretty quickly.

    1) Attaching the coffee filter is hard.Only after a little while I figured out that you can only put so much coffee into it, that you can still attach it.
    2) Only very small cups fit.
    3) Amount of espresso made is inconsistent.Sometimes it fills the entire cup, sometimes only 1/3 of it.
    4) Espresso brew runs over, by the filter.Even after adjusting.Adjusting the filter we lost the screw, we are truly "screwed" now.Already sent mail to Brittax, haven't heard back.
    5) The extra coffee runs into the container below, needs to continuously be cleaned.
    6) Today the steaming valve started leaking, water running out of it at a constant drip while brewing espresso.

If there is/would be a way to return this machine after 2 months of usage I will. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Lame--DVDs Gone Wrong
Basically, a poorly presented barrage of jumpy, stitched-together clips of young nitwits wiping out on skateboards, surfboards, snowboards, BMX bikes, bungee cords and other injury-producing contraptions, all while some of worst garage bands you've never heard of grunt out steaming piles of talentless noise.Unless you enjoy seeing these guys occasionally injure themselves (which, I admit, has a certain appeal), their "bloopers" are generally humorless and uneventful. On the plus side, this DVD might be useful as a coaster, a trapshooting target, or to wedge under a wobbly chair.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for home viewing, great for playing in the backroung
Personally, I don't get why people would want to buy a bloopers DVD for home viewing, there is plenty of this going around the internet for free.
This DVD is great for playing on a tv as part of atmosphere (in a sports bar or example), well, a small problem with copyright there. Oh yes, the soundtrack of this DVD really shouldn't be the reason to buy it... Hope this helps for you to decide.

1-0 out of 5 stars It SUCKED
I was so disappointed in this dvd. When I ordered it, I expected some great bloopers, instead, it was some amateur compilation of crap.I bought it as a gift for someone and

Lodge 2-1/2-Quart Cast Iron Deep Fryer Kit
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $39.95

    Editorial Review

Cast iron is one of those materials true kitchen aficionados love. It gets better with age and seasoning, won't warp or chip, and keeps food warmer longer. Put your seafood, veggies, hushpuppies, or beignets (French doughnuts--they're heavenly) in the fry basket, then lower into the fry pot. Just remember that cast iron is very heavy--this pot weighs 7 pounds--which is why there's a looped handle on the opposite side to help you lift the pot (use a hot pad). The pot has two pour spouts, and the kit includes a 5-inch thermometer that goes up to 400 degrees F. In general, you'll want to hand wash the pot with just hot water. However, prior to first use and occasionally thereafter, you should season it by washing it with a little soap, oiling it inside and out, and cooking it in the oven for an hour. The finish will soon turn black--the sign of a well-seasoned cast-iron pot. --Doree Armstrong

5-0 out of 5 stars Works really well
A solid product & an excellent value. I was using an all clad pan for deep frying until I got the lodge pan and the basket. There's a huge improvement in the quality of fries & fritters I make now. The cast iron pan keeps the oil at a more constant temperature, the heating is uniform and the frying is even. I highly recommend this product. For larger families, the size may be a problem as others have mentioned.
This one also comes with the thermometer even though the product description does not mention it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fryer if you use it correctly
For those chefs among us who either can't afford to have a built-in countertop deep-fryer, or for whom it would be impractical, the Lodge cast-iron deep fryer is a worthy and effective substitute. This is a great device, provided you use it properly. There are three essential rules to follow to achieve successful deep-frying. Though they are not complex, they are incredibly important, and failure to follow them will lead to less than satisfactory results:

    1. USE THE RIGHT OIL - For deep-frying, I prefer canola oil, which has a lower fat content and higher burn point than other oils, although some chefs sometimes use peanut or safflower. Leave at least three inches of room at the top when filling the pot with oil, because it will foam up when you drop food in to fry.

    2. FRY AT THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE - This means using a thermometer, which Lodge has conveniently included with the frying kit. You cannot fry successfully without a thermometer. It is obviously impossible to know what the oil temperature is without one, and for great deep-frying results, you want the oil to be in the 350-375 F range.

    3. GET THE BATTER RIGHT - If you're making fish & chips, frittersor other goodies that involve batters, it becomes key to make the batter properly - not too watery, but not too thick, either. This sometimes involves some trial and error, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be able make fish & chips as good as in the restaurants.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lodge Quality
This pot is another quality Lodge product and works well if it is seasoned correctly. It is easy to clean and works as heavy cast iron should. It is a bit small and would get 5 stars if it were 3.5 quarts. Well-worth the money, however and useful. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The roots of alcoholism in the life of a brilliant daughter of an upper-class family are explored in this stylistic, literary memoir of drinking by a Massachusetts journalist. Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life and sobered up. Her tale is spiced with the characters she's known along the way. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book, but.....
In "Drinking: A Love Story", Caroline Knapp reveals her story of alcoholism from childhood through rehab. Her story is told from an honest and intellectual perspective. I think this book would appeal the most to other educated, working, female alchoholics. However, people from various backgrounds would benefit from her message. She covers issues including relationships, dishonesty, addictive behaviors, family issues, and maintaining a career while under the influence. I would have given this book 5 stars, but I felt some parts were a bit too wordy and repetitive. The ending was a little disappointing to me because it didn't go into as much detail about her rehab and sobriety as it did her drinking. The book delivered such a strong message but seemed to fizzle out at the end.
Overall, this book is definitely worth reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost at Sea
The premise of "Drinking: A Love Story" is excellent: life of the over-privileged lost but functional in a sea of alcohol. The author does an excellent job with the story telling. There are elements of the Rikkilee Travolta story "My Fractured Life" in the details as well as in the style of storytelling. The two have a very similar feel and tone and should mutually appeal. There are also a few elements of the Augusten Burroughs story "Dry" but not as many as I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Clear
"Drinking A Love Story" is a stellar novel that puts a real voice on addiction. More than just being about an alcoholic, it's about being a functional alcoholic which is so incredibly eye opening. While "A Million Little Pieces" and "Basketball Diaries" are very graphic about over the edge, in the gutter, can't function in society addicts; "Drinking: A Love Story" is even more compelling because it's about someone you could well know. "Drinking: A Love Story" equates favorably to the better books in the field, books like "Smashed", "My Fractured Life", and "Dry." ... Read more
