Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 10-Piece Cookware Set
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $620.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

This 10-piece cookware set is deluxe and outfits a kitchen for a lifetime of essential cooking needs. The virtues of Calphalon's anodized aluminum are highly praised among cooks: even heat distribution, stick-resistant surfaces, quick heating and cooling, durable construction, and attractive design. The set includes two fry pans (or omelet pans, as Calphalon calls them), 8 and 10 inches, for individual and larger portions; two lidded saucepans, 2-1/2 and 4-1/2 quarts, perfect for making a variety of sauces, simmering side dishes, or cooking small batches of soup; an 8-quart lidded stockpot that will handle the gamut from pasta to soup to corn; and a true gem, a 3-quart sauté pan with a lid, great for browning, braising, and making vegetables or sauces. The details of these pots make them especially satisfying to use: riveted stainless-steel handles are sturdy and stay cool while cooking, lids fit easily and seal in juices, the stick-resistant finish means you need only use a minimum amount of oil, and the pans are safe for the oven and broiler. Care for these pans with consideration for the long, useful life they offer by always washing them by hand with mild cleaners. --Sherry Smith

5-0 out of 5 stars Another new set
We purchased the Commercial Hard Anodized set over four years ago and loved it.We had never had pots and pans that so evenly distributed heat. Now it has become too heavy for these old hands; but I refuse to give up my Calphalon. We have two Professional Hard Anodized pans bought as promotional items and decided that this grade was now what was needed.

Cooking is the hobby that my husband and I enjoy the most and our new set delivers all that it promises.

Believe the part about not having to use high heat. This was a foreign concept to both of us; but it's true.If you mind this rule and pay attention, clean up is a snap.If by chance, something winds up stuck on the bottom of the pan, just add some water and a little soap and simmer on low heat and it will turn loose.

Our son will now get Calpahlon in our lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars In use for over 8 years!
We purchased our Calphalon Commercial over 8 years ago, and have loved them continuously.I cook daily, often using the same pot 2 or 3 times a day for different dishes, and have not had any of the problems listed here.In fact, one night my husband was helping me cook dessert at a dinner party and left a pot on the stove with the burner on.The burner was on for about 24 hours before I noticed it.The pot - still in perfect condition. The only reasons I can think of for the reports that the surface deteriorates after use is that either the users are not following proper directions from the manufacturer OR that I was lucky enough to purchase my Commercial anodized BEFORE the Toledo, Ohio company was sold a few years ago and the new owner does not produce as high quality a pot as the old Calphalon (which I have had friends comment to me about).

2-0 out of 5 stars It's the pits
I bought a set of calphalon less than three years ago.Being a cooking enthusiast, I used the set almost every day, creating sauces, stews, sautees, you name it.Imagine my disappointment when this set that would last a lifetime (or so the sales person told me) started pitting after a measly 2 1/2 years of use?

I then sought out the warranty. That's when you realize just how heavy they are.Shipping damaged items to the manufacturer costs an arm and a leg, and there's no guarantee that they will even repair or replace it.So much for a company who stands behind their product.

I love my cookware, and I took very good care of them, always hand washing after use, and never using high heat (I never needed to, quite honestly). They were excellent conductors of heat, but sorry, I just can't live with cookware that I have to ship back to the manufacturer's ever couple of years. It would be easier for me to just go out and buy a set of All-Clad and be done with it.I'm so disappointed, and feel really silly for wasting my money on such flimsy cookware. ... Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 3-1/2-Quart Saucepan with Lid
Kitchen
list price: $110.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

This 3-1/2-quart saucepan is made of the heavy-gauge, hard-anodized aluminum that has built a loyal following for Calphalon's cookware. It heats evenly and quickly with no hot spots and no worries about warping. With a thick bottom and sides, this pan is a wonderful choice for long-simmering mixtures and delicate sauces that scorch in thinner cookware. And it's versatile--you can keep potatoes warm in the oven after boiling them, or even top them with cheese and pop the pan under the broiler.

Its textured stainless-steel handles, well-designed for a firm, secure grip, really do maintain a temperature that's comfortable to the touch on the stovetop, while the helper-handle on the opposite side is indispensable for lifting a heavy, filled pan from stove to counter. And the curved handle on the lid provides plenty of clearance for fingers, though oven mitts are needed for the handles when the pan's used in the oven or broiler.

Any metal utensils can be used in this stick-resistant pan without scratching the surface, and hot, soapy water and a sponge are all that's normally needed to wash this saucepan; scouring pads and manufacturer-approved cleansers are fine as well. --Patricia Draher ... Read more

Editorial Review

Calphalon Professional hard-anodized pans are made for the serious cook who's looking for kitchenware built to last a lifetime. This rounded, 3-quart chef's pan, for example, is shaped right for hand-tossing foods in the pan, and can be efficiently used for a variety of cooking tasks, whether it's making sauces, or braising and deglazing meats. Its nonporous and nonreactive hard-anodized surface resists sticking and doesn't affect the flavor or color of food--it's also tough enough to handle stainless-steel utensils. Unlike pans with plastic or wood handles, the extremely sturdy all-metal construction provides the flexibility to take a pan to the oven or broiler. The chromed cast-iron handles do get quite warm though, so keep a hot pad handy. Remember to hand wash all Calphalon pans--dishwasher detergents are bad for the finish, and their use voids the lifetime warranty. --Dale Steinke ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great item from Calphalon by Amazon
Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 6-Quart Chef's Skillet with Lid
A Chef's-Skillet ... A Frying-Pan ... A Shallow WOK-Pan ... A Paella-Pan ... A Casserole-Pan
It's all of those and more. Usefulness, Quality, Uniqueness and Weightiness makes this Skillet a must have, for those cooks, who are serious about his/her cooking plus it includes a domed-lid to boost.
If you only ever used a 10" frying-pan or skillet ... YES ... this is a large skillet, but you will quickly discover, the 'Helper-Handle' diminishes any awkward handling problems, you might be concerned about.
The 'domed' lid serves two purposes ... It returns evaporation liquids right back onto the food ... PLUS ... If some of your foodstuff is slightly higher than the rim of the skillet, it's not a problem.
Yes ... I too, gave it much thought, before purchasing the Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 6-Quart Chef's Skillet with Lid from Amazon. My only concern was the physical dimensions of this skillet. Then, as I started to think back, on how many times, wishing I had a large skillet, the choice was clear.
I have always savored the concept of a dual-cooking method, meaning 'start it on the stove top and finish in the oven' or in reverse, depending of the dish in preparation. With the un-coated all-metal Calphalon cookware that is never a problem as they will tolerate temperatures up to 700-F (371.11-C), even though most home ovens do not exceed 550-F (287.79-C)
Useful dimensions of this skillet not including the lid:
Inside Diameter: 13" ... Inside Skillet Depth: 3" ... Flat bottom cooking surface: 8-5/8".
It must be kept in mind, in the case of the thick-walled Calphalon cookware, the complete inside surface of their cookware becomes part of the useful cooking-surface.
KHS Tip: Always use heat-resistant nylon cooking utensils in any of the Calphalon cookware and follow Calphalon's recommended cleaning methods
Always Remember ...
The magic outcome of great cooking, is a combination of your passion and skills, infused and centralized with the tools you use, to achieve the end result. KHS

5-0 out of 5 stars Good All Purpose Skillet
I bought this skillet a while ago and use it all the time. It's great for large amounts or will also work for small amounts. It's been easy to keep clean so far.The only thing that some people may not like but that I don't mind is that it is quite heavy. The only part that is sometimes difficult to clean are the rivets on the inside of the pan.I sometimes have to scrub these more than the bottom of the pan. ... Doesn't it often seem that you can only find the measuring cups you're not looking for? Oxo solves that dilemma by including a ring that easily organizes cups and keeps them in one place. Easy to hang for simple storage, the cups are also equipped with easy-to-read labels of common measurements (1-, 1/2-, 1/4-, and 1/8-cup sizes) and color coding for little helpers who haven't mastered that skill yet. 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Yes, the handles are surprisingly bendy. It is true that they don't bend as much if you hold them down by the cup instead of the end of the handle, but on the other hand, what is the point of getting "Good Grips" if you can't hold it by the grippy part?

Also, the 1 cup is just that tiny bit too wide to fit comfortably in my kitchen drawer. Those of you who don't live in apartments, or who have kitchens less than 20 years old or so probably won't have this problem, however.

I got these as a second set of measuring cups, because in some recipes you just don't want to stop in the middle to wash up.I thought I wouldn't care that it didn't have the 2/3 and 3/4 cups in it.I was wrong. If you're thinking the same, think carefully.

2-0 out of 5 stars OXO let me down w/ flimsy handles
I really like OXO products.I have a number of their utensils in my kitchen and I enjoy that they have nice big handles.Since I started getting gadgets for my kitchen I always wanted these measuring cups.Well I finally got them.I was very excited to use them for the first time.Well I went to scoop some brown sugar and the handle started bending.I was very disappointed in how flimsy the handles are.I think I'll stick to my plastic ones from OXO, I had better luck with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong, Easy to Use, With Nice Heft
I greatly enjoy using these measuring spoons. They have a nice feel and are comfortable in the hand. The round shape makes it easy to measure accurately and clear extra ingredients off the top. They can be tossed in the dishwasher without any effect on their color-coded markings. Don't settle for plastic when you can buy metal spoons of this quality so cheaply!

Note:While the Good Grips SPOONS are great, I would stay away from the Good Grips Measuring CUPS.Unlike the handles on the spoons, the handles on the cups bend -- they are unusable for scooping out flour.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong & Sturdy
I love, love, love these measuring spoons. They are strong and sturdy... no bending when scooping out something like shortening.Comfortable to use, easy to clean.I recommend this set of measuring spoons!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good product
I bought these because they are made of metal - I was tired of my plastic measuring spoons flying around in the dishwasher. But since they are metal, when I'm measuring oil or anything else light in color, it's hard to see the amount of liquid in the spoon. ... Read more

Accurate to a tenth of a degree, this Pyrex digital thermometer takes the guesswork out of cooking by temperature. Made with a durable stainless-steel probe, the tool has an easy-to-read display that delivers readings from -50 to 392 F (-45 to 200 C) with a one-second delay. The plastic storage case doubles as a perpendicular holder so you can keep your fingers away from the heat source. It also includes an apron clip and a basic temperature guide for cooking meat. 2-0 out of 5 stars Accurate but a display issue.
Very accurate thermometer. However I do not think it has an automatic cut off regarding power.Mine is now useless as far as display, I think the battery has gone dead.If a calculator has an automatic turn off mechanism, why not this?

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised
Instant is not quite accurate, but if your willing to wait 3-5 second, it will give you a reading.I checked it against the tap water (hot & cold) and it appeared to be accurate. Postive features:
* Provided 2 batteries in the package
* Quick reaction time to final temp
* Was able to fit the second battery inside the case
* The protective sleeve doubles as a holder (holes in the side take the probe so holde is perpendicular to the probe)

Overall, slick, fast, good price.

Down side, I thought instant read meant instant read, to me that is 1 second or less.Oh well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Display Problems
I have similar problems with the display. It hates moisture.I bought this thermometer for use in homebrewing applications where it is necessary to hold ingredients at precise temperatures for extended periods of time...As soon as the steam rising up from the pot hits the thermometer, the display fades out and you can't read it... remove it from the steam and it works fine, at least for awhile -- but if you keep putting it back in the steam, eventally it will get too moist and you have to wait for it to dry out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ThePrecious
Yes, yes, I know -- too much "Lord of the Rings."Everytime I get a new little device I love I dub it "The Precious" and selfishly hoard it for myself.I chose this little timer because of the Pyrex name.I was disappointed when it arrived -- I thought it would be larger. And it looked a little flimsy. Then I used it and fell in love.I have an old, old oven with a dial timer that is murder to set. This little guy was easy to set and has a cheerful chirpy little alarm. Then I began to use it for everything -- to time my teeth whitening sessions -- how long till a favorite TV program -- my Spanish study lessons -- oh yes, and cooking.I started carrying it with me whereever I went, even to my health club to time my time on the track because it is so small (how could I have ever thought it was too small?) that it easily slips into my pocket. My husband is exasperated whenever he wants to use it because I always have it so I am guessing we will soon become a two-timing (haha) household.Wish they offered it in silver and black models, and I especially wish they would make it with a little slot for a neckstrap so I could wear it around my neck with my "precious" Sandisk mini cruzer.

4-0 out of 5 stars We have five of them
My partner & I love these timers. We pre-program the four timers to 15, 21, 30, and 45 minutes. This makes it easy to time most any length of time. For dinner parties, I like pulling off multi-course meals so having something where the rice, the roast, and the parboiling vegetables can all be on separate timers is essential.
Replacing the battery has been somewhat of a chore.Pyrex has does not make it clear what kind of battery they require. We haven't lost any due to dropping though one seems to giving out from an accumulation of kitchen crud.Nor have I had any problem hearing them. The cat has even gotten used to the alarm.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this timer!
I have used this particular timer in my laboratory for 5 years (as do nearly half of my coworkers).I worked in a particularly noisy part of the lab, and always heard it.I must have dropped it half a dozen times before it broke.I love it's multiple time settings, and the option to count up or count down.It can be used for more than just kitchen timing too; I've used it for overnight incubations (or baking a turkey, or making sure you get to the doctor's office on time). It also has a clip on it, so you can clip it to your pocket or belt and bring it with you.I was thrilled to see that it was available for the general public!I'm definately getting one for personal use.

The downside is mainly its durability. If it drops the right way, it's out.I've been through three of these in my five years. The first one lasted 2 years then I dropped it twice in the same week and it stopped working. The next only lasted six months, but it was dropped many times (be careful of the clip- I often bumped it into tables when it was on my hip). And the third one has lasted 2.5 years so far.

Overall, great product. You just need to be mindful of it's placement, and don't drop it! ... Read more
