KitchenAid KSM90 300-Watt Ultra Power 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White
by KitchenAid
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $269.99

Editorial Review

KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 300 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. --Betsy Danheim ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 25 years and still going strong!
This is the only appliance we received as a wedding gift -- from my Mom, of course! :) -- that is still alive and kicking. We'll have our 25th anniversary next month, so I couldn't resist writing this review of something that has been with us since "the beginning."

While I don't haul it out as often as I used to, it's great knowing it's there when I feel like making a ton of cookie dough or mixing up a fabulous cheesecake. My Christmas cookies are a family recipe for "kolachkis" (Polish ?) that use 2 pounds of flour, 2 pounds of butter, and 2 pounds of cream cheese for the dough. There would be no way I'd ever make them without this wonderful ol' beast! It can also grind the walnuts for the filling, and be ready to move on to the pumkin pie filling.

You'll never regret your purchase if you invest in a KitchenAid stand mixer!

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard by which all mixers are judged.
My wife and I got this as a gift for Christmas, and since Christmas I have used this more than my wife!

The ease of use and power this mixer brings to the table makes it the obvious choice for not only the casual cook, but the experienced chef.

The strong moter can handle even the most difficult batters. My wife uses it for cookie dough and cream sauces. The enclosed flat beater works well for those various uses.

I use it and the dough hook to make various breads and pizza doughs. Many of these doughs are very tough and thick, and this mixer handles all of them with ease.

The dough hook quickly beats your dough to a nice even consistency and helps form great gluten for your best bread yet.

Clean-up is easy, and the mixer's classic design looks great sitting on your countertop. This is a must have for anyone looking for a mixer.Look no further!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Dream Machine!!
I have wanted a KitchenAid Stand Mixer for a VERY long time. I finally broke down and did some price shopping....my machine is in perfect shape!I am extremely pleased with the service. I just can't wait to put the mixer to the test next week when I have to make a wedding cake. I bought this mixer to shorten my time in the kitchen when I am cake baking. It is definately going to do that and then some.... ... Read more

With an 8-cup work bowl and a built-in continuous-flow chute for slicing or shredding foods like cabbage into a separate bowl, this 350-watt food processor is versatile as well as inexpensive. It's great for a small household or an occasional cook who wants the convenience of food processing but doesn't need a big, powerful machine. With its stainless-steel chopping blade and reversible slicing/shredding disc, the processor does everything its more powerful counterparts do: slices, shreds, chops, mixes, and minces. It has two speeds and a pulse control, and all removable parts are dishwasher-safe. To the top of its feed tube, the processor measures 13 inches high, and it's 9 inches wide, including the work bowl's handle, and 16 inches deep, including the continuous-flow chute on top the work bowl. The processor comes with a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick n Easy Food Processor
I purchased this item in September and already the plastic part that goes on the slicing blade, the hole is warped out. Now I must order another part or even the whole blade again. I have never had any success with plastic parts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for
Just purchased this machine at WalMart for $25, so I didn't expect Cuisinart performance out of something that costs much less. Sliced vegetables well into consistent sizes. Mangled some spinach it was supposed to be "shredding."Chopped onion & celery great (with the chopping blade inside the bowl).

A major failure was its inability to combine cream cheese, butter, and herbs into a smooth mixture. The machine just refused to keep going and I was left with a lumpy chunk of butter in the middle of my cream cheese mixture.

Another gripe is that you must have a disk in place up top, even when you just want to chop or blend in the bowl. That just makes for one more item to wash when you're done.

The food chute worked well for hard vegetables but clogged up almost instantly when I was shredding the fresh spinach leaves.

If you want something to do speedy chopping and dicing when you're cooking for a crowd (like Thanksgiving), this will be adequate. But I plan to use the B&D model only until Santa brings me a Cuisinart or KitchenAid some Christmas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Culinary Crap
Leaks, even with leak guard on.Grates well if you use a small amount of food at once, but forget it if you want to try to hash a couple of potatoes at once. You'll wind up with some potato mush and some potato chunks. And speaking of CHUNKS....the reason I really don't like this thing is because the slicer/shredder disk doesn't just shred, it slices all at the same time!If you want cheese shreds, be prepared for shred/chunks.The problem is that as the food passes between the shred holes on the disk, it slips down into the dull side of the slicer hole and slices at the same time! This is my first processor; maybe all of them with the reversible disk work this way.I know processors are supposed to be multi-taskes, but only when you want them to be.Geesh! This one's going back to the store. ... Microplane Stainless Steel Zester
by Microplane
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $9.95

Editorial Review

For uniform lemon rind shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The totally flat grating surface makes it easy to move the fruit across the blades, while the rounded edges allow you to set this across the top of a bowl and grate directly into it. Ginger and all citrus fruits worked beautifully with this zester, and the tiny size of individual pieces means you won't need to do any additional chopping. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great kitchen tool
This is a must have! It grates lemon peel (among other things!) with ease. It's a great time saver too. Easy to clean, but a warning since this model has no handle; it's very sharp and can be awkward to handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microplane for Maxi+results!
I was actually shocked by how well this zester worked when I first tried it because of all of the negative comments about how it will cut your hand off, etc.

It works effortlessly and is therefore very easy to hold.Just grip the sides, rub it over the fruit, and the zest practically falls off.The best thing is that it removes only zest, 100% of the pulp is left behind.Unbelievable!

The Microplane makes very fine zest that disappears into your recipe, so there is no chopping up zest-like strings as with my old Henckels zester (which is now just a bad memory).

4-0 out of 5 stars Ouchie..
Be careful with this one - there isn't a handle so it's easy to scrape those knuckles!I've done it a few times, until I got the handled version. It works GREAT though, I highly recommend it (or spend a couple bucks more and get the next version up which is even better!). ... Read more

Whoever designed this board knows that bread kneaders can get pretty vigorous. The front rail is designed to lap over counter edge to provide stability while the back rail traps errant ingredients. The rails and the 3/4-inch-thick New England mountain maple construction prevent warping. You might reserve one side of this board exclusively for breads and pastries and use the other side for veggies and fruits. Wiping, rather than washing, the pastry side with a damp cloth helps preserve the smooth grain. --Toni Reineke ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Portable and Elegant Counter Top!
I highly recommend the J.K. Adams Counter board...I have a Tavolini (little table) Board and thought it was the perfect surface for kneading bread dough, rolling pastry or making Pasta.. Until I recieved The J.K.Adams Counter Board as a gift.. I quickly changed my mind, this board is the abosolute best! It's larger than other board surfaces at 20" x 24" ...there isa niffy lip to hook securely onto the edge of your counter or table.and at 12 plus pounds it stays put on your counter or table..In my opinon one of my favorite features, are the (3) side rails that keeps the mess contained...and the flip side can be used for chopping veggies...I consider this to be two boards for the price of one!.... If you are bored with flour being every where except your counter top and want a board that is not only useful but lovely to look at... do not hesitate..this is the Board for you!. ... Read more

Tough polypropylene handles with full, visible tangs and thetraditional three rivets distinguish Classic knives from Wüsthof'sother cutlery lines. Otherwise Classic knives are identical to otherWüsthof knives, embodying all the virtues that have earned theGerman manufacturer world renown. The principal parts of a Wüsthofknife--blade, bolster, and tang--are forged from a single piece ofhigh-carbon stainless steel, and the blade is precisely tapered frombolster to tip and from back to hand-honed edge. The blades andbeautifully formed bolsters are not as thick as on some knives. As aresult, despite their heft, strength, and durability, Wüsthofknives are pleasingly delicate and marvelously balanced in action.

This 7-inch santoku is a Japanese cook's (or chef's) knife, featuring alow-tip style with a broad blade. The cutting edge is minimally curved,so it provides less rocking action than a European-style cook's knife. For straight-down slicing and precise chopping, however, it's superb.Alternating hollows on each side of the blade create air pockets, allowing slices to fall away cleanly. This knife should be hand washed.--Fred Brack ... Read more

i used to use my 24" stahl chainsaw for all the prepwork in my kitchen, but since my boyfriend bought me this knife my conter is in much better conditon and the food much nicer in texture and appearance. gotta love those japanese, what will those little masterminds think of next.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is my food processor, slicer & dicer!
This is my favorite to slice with, peel or mince garlic, chop onions, celery, and etc. It even replaced my Chinese clever.
It holds an amazing razor sharp edge. I use it more often than the Wusthof Chef's knife. I use a set of crock sticks to sharpen my Wusthof set with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
I`ve been a J.A. Henckels knife proponent for years and own about 20, including 8 steak knives, and still love them all, but this has become my favorite knife. It is versatile and sharp. This meets two of the three really important issues in a knife, the third (in my mind) really important issue is: PRICE.This knife is a little pricey. But since it has become my main knife for dicing, slicing and almost everything else, it now seems almost cheap.

Update....Bought a second one for my mom. ... Read more

Harder than steel, this deep, rounded, 12-inch skillet isrugged enough for everyday use and large enough for cooking family-sizemeals. At 2-3/4 inches, it's deep enough for stir-frying on thestovetop, roasting vegetables, and for baking macaroni and cheese or abig cherry cobbler in the oven (safe to 500 degrees F). Because it'smade of hard-anodized aluminum it heats quickly and evenly without hotspots, and its exterior resists scratching and denting. I received my pan as a wedding gift a little over a year ago.I also received the set.I have not had any problems with the set, just this pan.The non-stick coating is not working anymore. In the warranty it states that this can happen with too high of heat- how do you cook on your stove with too high of heat?I also bought a lid for the skillet and it does not fit
well.I need a new skillet. This one is just a big disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nonstick
This is an excellent skillet.I've had it for quite awhile and haven't gotten a scratch or blemish on it. It's absolutely nonstick and cleans up so easily. This is coming from somebody who always throws all their pots and pans in the dishwasher, burns things to total crisp and uses metal utensils on nonstick skillets.I abuse my kitchenware terribly and this thing still looks brand new and still nothing ever sticks to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unrivaled
This is a GREAT product for the price.AND HERE'S A TIP.I followed Lodge's seasoning instructions to the letter, and in fact, did it three times.I was hoping to speed up the seasoning process. What I got was a medium brown, but still a (food) sticky surface.Quite by accident, I put it over the stove, turned both burners up to med-high (med-high+?) and moved the griddle around over the burners every 10 minutes or so.After about 1 1/2 hours I had a blackened seasoned surface that matched the Lodge preseasoned grill press that I also bought! Not quite as non-stick, but a few uses have fixed that! I'm not sure that Lodge would approve, and there will be some smoke, but it seems to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent investment that will last forever
I have had this grill for almost a year and remain very happy with it.I primarily purchased it for the grill side but the other side is very handy as well - for example for large amounts of pancakes.

Cast iron isn't no maintanence -especially at the beginning - but after time it will be a piece that is non-stick forever if you maintain its finish. It's essentally non-destructable and will be around forever if cared for.Use, seasoning and care directions come with the griddle.

I have cooked quite alot of things on the griddle and I find it best for things that arent going to let off an excessive amount of grease. There is a rim that runs along the bottom to catch the grease but I find it shallow for cooking things such as bacon. That said I have cooked many other kinds of meat successfully...

It fits over 2 of my burners easily on a standard sized stove.I have learned to turn the gas burners on first - before putting the griddle on.If I dont they light and sometimes the flame comes up over the side- only for a second but safety first.I can also set one burner lower than the other...one end to cook on and one end more of a *keep warm* side.I like that very much.

My only caution would be that you really do need to either keep a window open or have a nice strong exhaust fan.Mine isnt all that strong and I find without opening a window this produces more smoke that my fan can handle. But this is grilling and a grill pan would produce the same issue.

This is an item that will last forever and assuming you are willing to care for it, especially at first, in the correct manner you will love it.Considering that more and more information on non-stick coatings suggest they arent a healthy choice, cast iron is becomming more and more desirable.**of note- non-stick coatings can kill birds and if you have pet birds they are a distinct health risk.**

If you have the space to store this and are able to handle the weight of moving this to wash and put away this is an excellent and healthful life time purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing we've bought in years
That was my husband's comment this evening. We all love this thing. We use the griddle side for pancakes and eggs and french toast and plain ol' grilled cheese, although we've kind of given up on the "plain ol'" stuff. We use the grill side with a press for pannini and our new favorite kind of grilled cheese! We cook steaks and chicken and hot dogs and pork chops - you name it, we cook it.It never leaves the stove top, except to be cleaned (and to clean the admittedly greasy cooktop.)

One note that I haven't seen mentioned - we have a glass top stove.I was told (after I got and used this thing) that it couldn't be used with a glass top stove.Ummm, well, yeah, it can.A LOT!With great success.

One other note - we don't ever heat it higher than medium high and things cook extremely well. We had pork chops tonight and they were fantastic - just a nice cross-hatch of grill marks on the outside and perfectly cooked and juicy inside. That's when my husband made the comment in the title.

As for cleaning, we try to let excess stuff burn off for 15 minutes or so after we take the food off the grill. This works really well. Then I (let's be honest - the menfolk don't clean this puppy) put in across the sinks and scrub it with a stiff brush. No soap. Then I dry it and brush it with oil.If I really had to work hard at the cooked on food, I might even heat it up again to re-season it.

I grew up with cast iron skillets. My great-great-grandmother's cast iron skillet. It's passed down through our family to the daughter who has the most kids.(With only 1 child, I was never in the running!) That thing is so well seasoned you can cook almost anything in it without sticking. Oh, and it's 16" across. That's where that rule comes in about having the most kids!

I look forward to the day when my grill/griddle is that well seasoned.Considering how often we use it, it shouldn't take long! ... Read more

In Italian, "mezzaluna" means "half moon," and the curved shape of this incredible chopper echoes the moon's shape in the midpoint of its cycle. Its extremely sharp blades make quick work of vegetables, meats, and hard cheeses, and are ideal for dicing leafy herbs. Hold the mezzaluna firmly by the black knobs and, with a rolling motion, seesaw the blades over a thick slice of onion or a pile of fresh cilantro. You can chop as roughly or dice as finely as you choose. To protect the blades and your fingers, keep the protective plastic sleeve the mezzaluna arrives in. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars one blade is better
Mezzalunas are great, but any w/ two blades are too tough to clean and get the minced items out from between the blades. My advice is to buy one of the many models w/ a single blade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, ergonomic, non-electric chopping
My grandmother swore by one of these rocker-shaped knives for doing nuts and other fine chopping. I have one, and I use it a lot for mushrooms, nuts and herbs. Having said how great it is, I have to add some caveats:

1. It's sharp, yeah, I know, duh! But...food gets caught between the two blades and it's tempting to run a finger in there to push it out. Well, don't. Keep a spatula or chopstick handy to push out anything caught there.

2. You really should use a concave sort of chopping board if you can find one. While a flat plastic chopping board works just fine, a curved board makes chopping easier.

3. Some things just aren't good for this knife: dryish but not TOO hard things (nuts, celery, etc) work best. The wetter the food, the more it sticks. Even so, I do use this for chopped chicken livers. But for nuts, it's about my favorite knife to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, it's decent, but there's more versatile designs.
It's good for mincing, and the form is a nice take on the half-moon design. However, an ulu would be better. It's single blade, but is good for slicing and shearing as well as mincing. This can only do mincing, due to it's handle design and blades.
Personally, I prefer a tool with more function, like an ulu. Can't beat a design that's been used for thousands of years (for a good reason...) ... Read more

Every slice of the knife leaves a cut on the surface of this board. If that bothers you, you should get something else that's made of harder stuff. If you need to get something so you can stop using the dinner plates and counter top as a cutting surface, or if you like soft cutting boards (I think they feel better against the edge of the knife) then this might be right for you.Basically, it's under ten dollars and it's probably better than the one they have hanging up above the shelves at your local super market.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in BOARD!!
This board is constructed of VERY soft material. All of the reasons that I ordered this were lost the first time that I used it.
All of the knife marks are places where germs can accumulate. (Yes, I wash it, but sometimes my husband does.) My main reason for buying this board was because it was listed as "nonporous", if that is the reason you are looking at this board, forget it. ...

Track baking temperatures with precision, using thisclip-on Good Grips oven thermometer from Oxo. Designed to attach to an oven rack either above or below, the sturdy dial-face unit lets you gauge when your oven is ready or whether the temperature has dropped. The clip and casing are made from stainless steel, and the face is frosted glass so oven light shines through for easy reading. Calibrated for accuracy, the thermometer displays both the Fahrenheit scale (200 to 500 degrees) and the Celsius scale (100 to 300 degrees). The dial is a convenient bright red and tapers to a narrow point. In position, the thermometer measures 3-1/4 inches high by 2-3/4 inches wide. Washing by hand is recommended. --Emily Bedard ... 1-0 out of 5 stars 100 degrees off what it should have been
The OXO thermometer I purchased was to replace a cheap grocery store version I'd been using.Nice concept, but mine was grossly inaccurate. My oven runs between 17 and 25 degrees below what it should be, not the 100+ degrees indicated by the OXO unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor design
I have many Oxo kitchen items, and they are well-designed tools. I was therefore excited to see that Oxo has an oven thermometer, since I do a lot of baking and needed to check the accuracy of the oven temperature. I am sad to say that this item does not live up to the Oxo name.

The thermometer appears to measure the temperature properly. However, the clip-on apparatus is poorly designed. If the rack to which the thermometer is attached is bumped even gently, the thermometer pops off and falls onto the oven floor. Having retrieved and reattached the thermometer numerous times, I give up. I will be returning this item.

Editorial Review

When set on low for all-day simmering, this cooker from the makers of the original Crock Pot slowly tenderizes meat, turning even budget cuts into juicy meals. A modest 3-1/2-quart size, the oval-shaped crock holds enough chicken, beef, stew or soup for two to three people. The temperature knob has three settings: off, low, and high. The crock, which lifts from the base for cleaning, features a rinse-clean, lifetime stick-resistant coating. As long as extreme changes in temperature are avoided, such as placing in cold water when hot, the crock should give years of service. Both the crock and lid are dishwasher-safe. A one-year warranty covers this slow cooker from defects. --Ann Bieri ... Read more
