4-0 out of 5 stars Most definitely worth a try!
I have read some of the reviews and a lot of people seem to have read the book without giving the stuff a try. One person said if it was that easy, then everyone would be rich. Well there are a lot of books out there on dieting and how to quit smoking and how to get better at "whatever". The point. Only a certain percentage of people will try the stuff. There are tons of diet books sold each year and does everybody who read these books lose weight? It does take discipline and effort. And dare I say "work". I do agree that, you should also study other materials, but change is definitely possible if you "practice" these techniques. Definitely work towards you're dreams and learn from you're failures. Setting goals, visualizing and keeping focused on them, along with good old charity, mixed in with a good old dose of positive expectation should yield some pretty surprising results

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful World it Could Be!!
A very enjoyable read!Mr. Boc's points are just plain good livin' in my opinion. To dream, set goals, work hard and visualize may seem like the only ingredients for success, but Mr. Boc proposes a far deeper level of growth. With humor and insightfulness, he has challenged humanity to try this method and truly experience happiness.Changing reality may seem like delusion, but don't be deceived into missing out on what may be the best understanding and experience of life! My view of myself in this world continues to improve as a result of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great theory
I received this book a week ago and read it twice since. Although 'm still very sceptical, I decided to give two prong method a try before I give it a bad review. And trust me, if it doesn't deliver, I will write one, but for now I give it 5 stars because it's so uplifting and well written. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a second bow to Emerson
I would agree with the reviewer who said that Anthony should give credit to Emerson for many of the basic ideas in this and other of his books. In fact, most of the info. in this and scores of books of similar genre have become pretty much new agey, generic stuff about looking for the answers within, settingand writing down goals, visualizing, etc. You've got to hand it to these guys for enterprise though; they really know how to find a market need and exploit, er fill it.In this case the market is the estimated 30 - 40% of the population that is high in self-doubt and low in self-confidence.Which of us can resist such catchy, promising titles as "Advanced Formula for Total Success" or "Achieving Total Self-Confidence."It must be nice to be the alpha males on the other side of the spectrum nottroubled with such annoying anxieties and doubts and able to take advantage of these opportunities and get wealthy themselves in the process. One question: Doctor Robert Anthony really is a "doctor," right? The reason I ask is that I've read most of his books and nowhere did I find mention of whatdoctorate he has or where he received it.Other self-improvement gurus like Wayne Dyer and Scott Peck clearly state their credentials.I read an article that many self-anointed, self-improvement gurus go around giving seminars with Doctor in front of their names which turn out be bogus. In any case, you can save a lot of book reading by following their basic advice and looking inward todraw from the same source they do for all the answers you'll ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent simple to understand message
Dr. Anthony does an excellent job of breaking down the spiritual and psychological makeup of humans into understandable delineations. Then he gives useful, doable, techniques that assist you in 'reprogramming' yourself into what you consciously choose, not what others may have chosen for you. His message is positive and exciting, short andsimple. There is a strong underlying spiritual message that places a Higher Power at the center of all positive change. This book is not preachy, new agey, religious or zealous. It's very matter of fact, and I sense no ego from the author, which is usually the case with these types of books. My only complaint, is the 'packaging' of this book. Sort of like something you'd see on the shopping network. The cover reads like a screeching two-bit snake oil 'self help' salesman, so unlike the inside. The only reason I haven't bought copies for everyone I know. I guess you can't judge a book by it's cover, and hey, I picked one up the first time, didn't I?! My copy has been read and reread, dogeared and hightlighted. A wonderful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Honoring the self
I bought in April this year this book, together with Nathaniel Branden's "How to raise your self-esteem". I did not know these two authors. I read about two pages of this book and then put it in an corner. Then I opened Branden's book; to date, I have read seven of his books; some of them, being out of print, were very hard to find. Read both authors and decide yourself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave was my roommate aboard USS ORISKANY.
Dave was my roommate aboard USS ORISKANY prior to his capture in 1967. As a Naval Academy graduate and Naval Aviator he was assigned to an attack squadron flying the A-4 Skyhawk. I met Dave the day we departed NAS Alameda for deployment to Southeast Asia, and Vietnam. He had his fiance Karen aboard for a short time in the officer's wardroom for coffee and last minute good byes. The next time he saw Karen was 5.5 years later after his release from a North Vietnam prisoner of war camp. I saw him again at his wedding!

This is terrific read along with Zalin Grants "Over the Beach" about the war, it's history, and the toll it took on countless lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great BOOK - Great INTERVIEW
This is definitely the best account I've read on what went on in North Vietnam and the pain, torture, and disappointment that was suffered by our POWs.One of the reasons that I say that is because everything is tied to genuine, down-to-earth wisdom about how all of us can become better. As the title says, it's primarily through the choices we make. And Dave Carey brilliantly simplifies it down into 5 key lessons.
1.Do what you have to do.
2.Do your best.
3.Grow through the experience.
4.Keep your sense of humor.
5.Keep the faith in yourself, others, your Country, and God.

I laughed and/or cried through most of the book. The stories are so well written that they took me to Hanoi Hilton so I could learn these lessons vicariously through Dave and his fellow POWs.

I interviewed Dave Carey on "The Inside Success Show" and I was honored to be speaking to a real hero. I believe that his story and life's lessons should be heard by every other American and freedom loving person.

Here's some of what you'll learn from the book:
**How Dave Carey thought he was bullet proof before he got shot down
**Why you need to decide what you will do when adversity strikes - because it will!
**What kind of circumstances in life seem like torture and how to handle them
**How you be creative when the going gets tough
**What are the 4 ways in which you must keep the faith??
**How you actually grow and come out of adversity a better person

**And much, much more ..

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW... and i thought i had a few tough years!
i thought i had lived through some tough times before reading Dave's story... if life has got you down, choose this book, you'll begin to feel you too can survive and excel even in the most demanding situations. Dave ties in his Vietnam experience to create powerful insights for daily living in part 2.
My advice... READ THIS BOOK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start learning NLP NOW!
After reading a couple of 'text' books on NLP, I found myself swimming in the information I read. There was so much information that I did not even have a place to begin. This book, however, was very simple to follow and, more importantly, implement. After reading this book and using only a few of the ideas that it contains, I probably have gotten as many call-backs in the last 2 weeks as I have in the previous 2 years of my selling career. Many of these call-backs were from voicemail messages that I left, and the people were much more pleasant to deal with than I have ever seen.

Anyway, I am very impressed with the book and my eyes are now open to NLP.I can actually start to use this stuff now!I'd recommend it to everyone, but I don't want too much competition!

5-0 out of 5 stars What I didn't know until...
The title is a metaphor that sleeps until you truly awaken it with action. Complex realties are skillfully hidden within practical insight. A work book that proves experience in the field of highly effective communication.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After skipping through this book, I decided to return the copy I ordered. I could not find in it anything new or extraordinary that other NLP books don't cover, and its exercises don't seem to be able to enhance my NLP/rapport building/selling skills.Maybe someone new to NLP can find it helpful, but still this books is way more expensive than most other NLP books. So I decided to cut loss and return it. Thanks to Amazon's generous return policy, I only have to lose a few dollars on return postages. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Never Trust Strangers
This book is an excellent primer on the psychology of negotiation and persuasion. The author has a real talent for packaging a sprawling body of research as a set of simple but profound principles. It should be emphasized that this is a work of popular science. As such, the author relies on anecdotes and examples more than science in his presentation.More than once, I found myself in agreement with the author's conclusion without having read about a actual study; such is the power of the author's common-sense approach. It shouldn't be too surprising that a book on persuasion might sacrifice scientific rigor for compelling anecdote. That being said, the book has many good and accessible presentations of the underlying science, and includes a full bibliography for the curious and the skeptical.

One should also take the book's principles with a grain of salt. Each chapter concludes with a section entitled "How to say no", which seem alternately self-righteous (I was particularly put off by a rather contemptuous passage in which the author fantasizes about telling off a door-to-door saleswoman) and paranoid. The author, for comic effect or otherwise, has a particular vendetta against salespeople, from car dealers to waiters to petition gatherers. If you take away only the idea that "compliance practitioners" are taking advantage of your psychological shortcuts to extract things from you, you will begin to act like an animal backed into a corner. However, with a balanced perspective, the principles are valuable tools that you can take into the dozens of negotiations into which you must enter into every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light-hearted Approach to a Serious Subject
OK, I know this is a serious book about influence -- but I laughed all the way through -- at Dr. Cialdini's stories and at myself and how often I had been "taken" by persuasive tricks.

What I got from the book was more than just an enjoyable read --although I can assure you "Influence" is a fun read.

I got a mental innoculation.

I no longer listen to unknown young people at my door insisting that I "help" them win a scholarship by buying magazines I neither read nor want to read.

I no longer feel compelled to do nice things -- or anything at all -- for strangers who press on me small gifts I do not want.

I no longer hide out in the back room, waiting for the door-to-door salesman to roost on some other hapless person's doorstep.

I no longer listen to the spiel from a man who says "he's visiting friends in my neighborhood and just wanted to meet me."Oh, right!

And I no longer feel guilty about resisting and ignoring persuasive tactics -- whatever they may be -- at all.

Thanks, Dr. Cialdini, for a great read and a painless innoculation.I recommend your book to anyone -- anywhere -- who's bought something they absolutely did not want!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will save you a lot of money!
Cialdini offers in this book a comprehensive account of marketing strategies frequently employed to induce compliance from prospective customers. Have you ever wondered why we sometimes buy things we do not even need? Cialdini argues that given the right circumstances most people can be persuaded and deceived. Learn how salesmen maximize their profits by offering expensive products first. Learn how the principle of perceptual contrast works against prospective customers. More importantly, why are we more inclined to purchase something if we are first offered a highly expensive product followed by a less expensive one?

Second, did you know that unexpected gifts from strangers can turn out to be nothing but highly elaborate and cunning psychological tricks? Thus, receiving a gift, as harmless as it first may appear, may have adverse consequences. Remember, most strangers have ulterior motives and therefore think twice before you accept a gift. Salesmen know too well that it is crucial to create a sense of indebtedness in a prospective customer. For example, send someone a gift if you want to induce subsequent compliance from him. It is imperative that the subject views it as a gift and not some product you are trying to sell. Have you ever wondered why charity organizations first send a gift and then ask you to donate money for a good cause? People are more inclined to comply or to do as you want them to if they feel indebted to you. Note that giving money to charity is a noble thing.

Third, did you know that people tend to act in accordance with their self-image? Now, you are probably thinking why I mention this seemingly trivial fact. Well, this simple fact plays a pivotal role when it comes to persuading people to act in one way or another. If my friends consider me a generous person then I will do anything to remain generous in their eyes. Salesmen know this and unless you know how to resist, they will manipulate you. Cialdini provides numerous examples that will open your eyes and make you aware of these sophisticated psychological tricks. Thus, the desire to be consistent with your self-image can be potentially detrimental.

Even though much of what is accounted for in this book constitutes common sense, there is still plenty of useful information here. Every finding in this book is supported by empirical evidence. This is what makes Cialdini's book far superior to other similar books. Unlike other unrealistic and sensationalistic books that purport to teach you how to persuade anyone to your way of thinking, Cialdini's book teaches you to be more assertive and careful. This book has taught me more about the psychological aspect of persuasion than all the other books combined. Cialdini writes extraordinarily well and assumes no prior knowledge in a reader; to ascertain comprehension in the reader, Cialdini provides countless examples of real-life situations.

To sum up, this is what I have learned after reading Cialdini's book:
- I no longer buy things I do not need,
- I have become much more assertive,
- I am aware of many of the insidious marketing strategies,
- I never accept gifts from strangers,
- I have learned to negotiate a reasonable price in any given situation.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great and Reliable Guide
This book is biased towards visual mnemonics.I think this is fine because the author is a published researcher of visual mnemonics. He gives advice for when AND when not to use visual mnemonics. This is extremely helpful.

He does cover a range of other methods though, including SQ3R.But the most impressive thing is the use of good solid science to back it all up.

I like visual mnemonics because they work like magic. In qualifying his statements about the use of visual mnemonics, Higbee does his writing great credit.

As far as helping me, the book has been of great use to me in my A levels, degree, and Masters. But more worthy is that he has helped me enjoy learning in any context.I apply the principles rather than just the techniques.

Regards
Reynal

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Point
This is a really great book.I remember reading some of it about 10 years ago from an old library version, and I have just read the updated version. It is a wealth of knowledge compared to other books that read more like fluffy new age pop psych on memory techniques.

The author is a researcher and professor, but the book is actually very accessible and delivered with both enthusiasm and reasonable caution where it is needed.I believe the one measure of the success of this sort of book is the range of strategies given, together with the principles used to guide their use, and the research used to verify the efficacy of certain strategies.

I have heard quite a few memory myths in my time, (the 99% brain disuse statistic, and the "perfect memory" quote, and the single killer memory application, amongst others), and this book puts them all straight. In fact if you are kind enough to informothers about improvement of memory skills using this book, you can give some really accurate knowledge, and be doing them a lot of good.

Learning to learn is lifelong. This is a great learning guide and a reliable reference point!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of memory concepts backed up with evidence
I do a lot of reading on study skills and bought this book because of good reviews on Amazon.com. I'm about 2/3 the way through the book and have found it excellent. The book teaches basic concepts that you will see in other memory books. Instead of just stating the principles it describes how they have been tested to prove why they work.

One other note about this book, it focuses on the realities. No crazy promise, nothing mysterious, just facts about improving study habits and retention. Well done. I can't wait to finish the book and re-read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars most inspiration exercise book I own
Everyday I read this book, I am amazed by the wisdom that this book offers. It covers many diverse aspect of exercise in easy to digest pages and each one is inspiring and sure to change mybehaviour for the better.I wish I had this book long ago but I'm very glad to have it now.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, PlainSimple (Response to Barbara Jordan)
I am a fan of Eric Harr's work. I've read his columns in Shape magazine and have enjoyed his other titles very much. I am dismayed at the review written by "Barbara Jordan "brownsugar76" who is obviously misguided and pessimistic. This book is a tips book -- 100 in all -- that give people basic guidance about exercise and living better. It never promises to be a thick, boring, scientific guide ... and THAT'S the appeal. There are hundreds of fitness books out there. Harr tries to deliver fitness wisdom in 100 simple tips. Granted some of them are a little "soft" for fitness buffs -- but most are very valuable.

I'm giving this book 4 stars, because it is GREAT for many people getting into fitness, but it's not geared towards more serious fitness people (who work out, say 5+ times a week).

Barbara Jordan "brownsugar76" doesn't see the book for its incredible value...which is a hearty book in easily-digestible "one-a-day" tips for people seeking to get fit and live and eat better.

As to her comment about the reviews of others, it appears Barbara Jordan "brownsugar76" is jealous of Eric Harr's success. I checked these people's reviews -- and they're REAL people with real opinions.

Be wary of green-with-ency reviewers like Barbara Jordan "brownsugar76." This is a great book. Decide for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mover and a Shaker...Read it and You'll Be One Too
Finally, fitness advice that will get you off your couch and onto the track / bike / into the pool / or whatever else you do. I just bought the book about a week ago, returned home, and read it cover to cover in an hour. One hundred simple and truly life-altering strategies are contained within that have gotten even my lazy self up and moving. Over the past two days, following the book's advice on everything from nutrition, to technique and motivation, I've run ten miles (and feel great!), and I don't plan on stopping any time soon :).From his writing, the author is a truly fit individual, both mentally and physically, and his personal perspectives on the wonders of a clear mind and a healthy body are refreshing every time I open the conveniently-pocket-sized book. Humorous, compelling and without pretense, Harr's guide can pull out the passion and performance in anyone (and I mean anyone) and set them on the path to a healthier and happier self. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish i looked like that
But im only 14 so i havent fully developed yet, so i have hope that with this i will not stunt my growth and still get tough muscles.I also lift weights so if i update this , i might be wrong...

1-0 out of 5 stars a very thin and generalized guide to USMC fitness
I was really expecting to get more out of this book.First of all, I find the Daily 16 to be an excellent workout.I had visible results after the first few days. The rest of the book, however, is too thin.

Outside the Daily 16, the book really was not helpful. It has sections on recruit training and on OCS, but they are mostly photographs with little information. Most pages have a giant photograph and only one paragraph of text. The recruit and OCS sections merely focus on certain points of training and do not give a comprehensive overview that you would expect out of a full-size book. The writing style is also juvenile and simplistic, almost on a child's level. In summary, the boot camp and OCS sections (more than half of the book) are nothing new to anyone who has perused the official USMC website.

The nutrition section was a major disappointment. All it does is provide basic nutritional information that anyone who took Health in high school already knows. The advice is very general, with obvious points such as "drink a lot of water" and "not all fats are bad" being common. Some example meals and diet advice that is not common knowledge would have made this section worth including. As is, it's a half-hearted attempt to fill pages.

The title of this book is "The Marine Corps Workout."Of its 200-plus pages, only about 80 pages (the majority of which are oversized photos) are dedicated to the workout itself. The sections on recruit and officer training do not count, because no attempt is made in those sections to show the reader how to do those exercises. They are merely pictures of recruits in training for entertainment's sake. The rest of the book is just filler to make it worth selling for ten bucks.

I think most of the people who rate this book highly are rating it merely on the basis of the Daily 16.I give the workout itself five stars, but the Daily 16 routine is freely accessible on the Internet and not worth buying a book for.Just google "daily 16" and see what I mean.Outside of the workout, this is the kind of book you'd pick up off the library shelf, flip through for about 15 seconds, and put back. You do not need to buy this disappointing book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Semper Fit!
I got this book in the hopes of finding challenging but do-able workout. There are many books that capitalise on the idea of Marine Corps training, for good reason - Marines are tough!Fair warning -- this book is not by Marines. The author Andrew Flach is a fitness expert, joined by a well-known freelance photographer (Peter Field Peck). This book is part of the Five Star Fitness Series that looks at the kinds of workouts of all the branches of the military. My father was in the military, as are many close friends, and I have always admired their fitness achievements - thus it makes sense I might opt for a military-inspired fitness programme.

This book is not simply a workout book. It is an introduction to the Marine Corps. There is more to Corps fitness than just doing push-ups and log drills. When you are in boot camp the mind is shaped as much as the body.To help with this history and mindset, the authors consulted (according to the credits) officers from the Pentagon, Parris Island, Quantico, and a corporal from San Diego. The reader is introduced to the Mission of the Marine Corps.

In addition to the workouts listed here, there are pictures and essay snapshots of what recruits actually endure in training. This book also gives some basic history of the Marines, and also walks through arrival at boot camp, either Parris Island, South Carolina or San Diego, California, the two Marine Corps Recruit Depots (boot camps).Just like recruit training, the book starts with an Initial Strength Test: for men,Pull-ups - at least 2 ; Situps - at least 35 in two minutes; 1.5 mile run - in at least 13:30 minutes. For women, Flex-arm hang - at least 17 seconds; Situps - at least 35 in two minutes; 1 mile run - in at least 10:30 minutes.

The book talks about basic Recruit Physical Training, detailing formation runs, squad ability runs, rifle PT, log drills and like activities. The Circuit Course is shown here including steps with boxes, ropes, chin-ups, weight training. It isn't until half-way through the book that the reader actually gets to some exercises you can do. This section begins with the Daily 16, a combination of stretches and exercises. These are organized by cards, that are actual laminated cards the Drill Instructors carry around for leading. There is one warmup card, two stretching cards, and three exercise cards. These should be rotated over time for use. The exercises on the cards are described in words and pictures for the next 40 pages, and then there is an additional section on rifle PT. Readers without a rifle can use any longish bar or object.

One of the points of interest in this book are the highlights of individual Marines. Marines work as a team, but rarely shy from the limelight as individuals. Sergeants Joseph Simpson, Baldemar Benavidez, and Charles Rollins, Warrant Officer Andrew Burns of the British Royal Marines, Lieutenant Commander Dennis Rocheford of the US Navy (a Navy chaplain serving with the Marines), and Captain Gary Gonthier are all held up as examples of leadership, fitness and training.

The book has a section on nutrition (as every fitness book seems incomplete without at least a gloss of this topic), but this is rather thin here. The book even includes principles of leadership and a glossary of terms, some of the letter abbreviations Marines need to know, and also the sea-based language (windows are portholes, etc.).

Near the conclusion of the book is a specific plan for those the Delayed Entry Program, to get people ready to pass these tests - they have crash courses or more reasonable courses of up to 6-months.These, of course, are just the beginning level of fitness.

The authors include the list of a 64-Day Boot Camp Workout, with each training day laid out. These are not all things that you can do at home (combat skills and obstacle courses are hard to come by).

The photographs are utilitarian and useful - black and white, not glossy and colourful; the point here is the exercise, not the subject exercising.According to the authors, part of the proceeds from this book goes to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Yogurt is a great, guilt-free snack for both adults and kids. With this yogurt maker, it's easy to add favorite flavors--including exotic and sweet fruits, rich crunchy nuts, and natural sweeteners--to basic yogurt. Just follow the recipes, supplied by the manufacturer, and a nutritious snack, with very little fat and no preservatives (like most commercial brands), is not too far away. Making yogurt takes from 4 to 10 hours to process, depending on desired tartness of the batch. If you're looking for frozen yogurt, you do have to chill it for 2 hours in the freezer before consumption after it's made. The yogurt can be stored up to one week. --Teresa Simanton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It!!!
I have to admit--it was a bit of a pain at first with getting the milk temperature right and all, but now I absolutely love it!!! Just heat the milk in the microwave for about 4 minutes (the temp. needs to be about 100-110 degrees), add the starter, put it in the warmer overnight, and taadaa... fresh yogurt first thing when I get up. It does better when it sits in the fridge a little while and firms up. But it comes out very creamy and smooth and tastes fantastic with homemade strawberry preserves. I've even started making it for my friends who didn't think they liked yogurt:) Great product at a very affordable cost!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
This yogurt maker got its precious place in my kitchen. I highly recommend it anyone who wants to eat natural and perfect yogurt. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Foolproof yogurtfor practically nothing
I finally gave up on my ancient set of yogurt jars when I broke too many of them. They weren't the greatest, and they didn't give foolproof results, but they DID give me fresh and inexpensive yogurt. Most of the time.
I was a little leery of the new Salton system because it didn't use the little cups, but I figured I could just put the finished yogurt in some recycled marg containers. I was right; the one-quart system works smoothly and effortlessly. You have yogurtin the space of a day with a minimum expenditure of time and energy, and the yogurt is simply superb.
You heat up a quart of milk to the scalding point, then cool it back down to 110. you add some yogurt starter and put it into the heater for five hours. The system essentially consists of a heater jacketand a plastic bucket that keeps the working yogurt at the right heat, until you cool it and put it in the fridge. The heater is beautifully designed to be simple and efficient. It is easy to wash and looks like it will last forever.
The system comes with very complete and totally clear instructions that tell you what NOT to do as well as what TO do. I cannot imagine how anything could be easier than this process! And you gotta love the price. You should definitely buy a spot thermometer for monitoring the running-in temperatures, but you will have everything else you need in your kitchen already. ... Editorial Review

The Hot Spot is best known to lecherous film buffs for Jennifer Connelly's topless scene, but this sultry southern noir deserves more than prurient interest. It's arguably Dennis Hopper's best directorial effort (OK, so that's not saying much), and Charles Williams's source novel Hell Hath No Fury finds Hopper in a comfortable B-movie milieu, riffing on Double Indemnity with an overripe tale of sex, greed, and blackmail in an unnamed Texan town. Fresh from the final season of Miami Vice, Don Johnson stars as a shifty drifter, conning his way into a salesman job on a used-car lot, where the boss's insatiable wife (Virginia Madsen) offers him sexual favors and a lovely secretary's (Connelly) innocence is threatened by a percolating scandal. Nobody's really innocent, of course, and Hopper spices this languid web of secrets with enough trashy misbehavior to qualify The Hot Spot as a bona fide guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don Johnson torn between Connelly, Madsen, and Money.
Having recently seen Sideways, and captivated by Virginia Madsen's Oscar-nominated/career revival performance, it was my absolute curiosity to see what she was like more than ten years ago in this steamy sexual/bank robbery thriller. She was actually very good in this B-movie, and her role is similar to Sharon Stone's role in Basic Instinct. Gotta love her authentic Texas accent here!

It's a movie about love, sex, and money. Don Johnson plays an out of towner con artist working undercover as a car salesman in a dealership owned by Virginia Madsen's hubby. She's an over-sexed bombshell and naturally she would hit on Johnson, but his true love interest is Jennifer Connelly, a secretary at the dealership. Johnson had masterminded a scheme to rob the local bank, and during his stay in town, he became involved sexually and romantically with the two ladies. It's a smart idea on how he managed to steal the big bundles of cash from the bank and then he had to figure out which woman should leave town with him.

This is pretty sexy movie, and the viewers do get to see enough nudity of the three leads. Jennifer Connelly was very young, and her affair with the sexy Don Johnson seemed like a variation of Lolita. Virginia Madsen is very striking, and so different from her Sideways role, because she's so wild, raunchy, and insatiable.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hot Spot
Having bought "The Hot Spot" almost exclusively on the reviews of Jennifer Connelly's topless "scene" here on Amazon, I was disappointed in that respect. This scene is outstanding but not worthy of the hyped-up reviews.

In general, the nudity is less than I expected. But it's hard to complain about any nudity involving Virginia Madsen and Connelly. Both are as hot as I've seen them in our out of clothing in any project.

In his own right, Don Johnson does an excellent job in this movie as he still has some of his "Miami Vice" prime left.Surprisingly, the script and plot are excellent as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jennifer Connelly?
Oh, yeah, she's in this too, isn't she? Let's see...The brunette, yeah.

Good. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get serious and admit that Virginia Madsen is this film's proper eye candy.Yes, my enduring weakness for brassy blondes makes my opinion biased, but can anyone deny that Madsen dominates the rectangle whenever she's in view?Yes, yes, I know, the performance is cartoonish, camp, comical--I'm pretty sure that's what the role calls for--Barbara Stanwick on steroids--but she slides into the femme fatale with ease, has fun with it, and even gives it some depth, some mystery, a hint of pathos.

Have fun counting the number of times she uses a body double for the nude scenes.(Hint:The camera follows her as she runs behind a tree beside the old mill, late at night. Is that really Virginia running out the other side?)

Have fun with the her bizarre lines: ("I'm f---ing you to death, George!")

Truly a great, ham-it-up performance by a versatile actress who never really got her due.

Not to detract from Don Johnson's performance. He's almost perfectly cast here.
