The Best of Marvin Gaye (Motown Anthology Series) Average Customer Review: Audio CD (20 July, 2004) list price: $34.49 -- our price: $34.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Balancing raw power with shades of vulnerability, Gaye rose to the top of Motown's roster without the benefit of a supporting vocal group. Whether singing love songs or social commentary, Gaye's voice displays an earnestness and sincerity that are a soul singer's most potent weapons. Among these 47 hits are his memorable duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell along with Motown staples such as "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is," "Ain't That Peculiar," and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." This 2 CD set also covers socially conscious 1970s originals such as "What's Going On," "Mercy, Mercy Me," and "Inner City Blues." Only his last hit, "Sexual Healing," is left out. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more Features Reviews (20)
Anyway, this 2-CD (or 2-tape) collection of 67 songs, 40-some known hit singles and some album cuts, b-sides and rarities is the PERFECT album for a true artist like Marvin Gaye was. Many cats can only wish that they can have the hit catalogue that this brotha from the Chocolate City had! I mean, he was not only just a popular singer who recorded some of the 20th century's greatest songs and albums known to mankind, but he was also a great writer, producer, arranger, mixer, musician and instrumentalist not to mention he already had a career as a lead singer of two R&B groups in the late-'50s before signing with Motown in 1961 to be a jazz singer (his original intention of rebelling against what people were telling him how he should be). And then you can't forget his LEGENDARY and AMAZING duets with classic R&B female legends like Mary Wells (the first female superstar of Motown), Kimberly Weston, the wonderful and memorable Tammi Terrell and last but not least the Motown Queen, Diana Ross. So not only has his career spread four decades but in the middle of it, he was able to be in a couple of groups, be a legendary duet partner and he even played in a couple of movies or three. But anyway back to the anthology set of Marvin! The man's hit career spreads into three or four or even five different periods at a time: Suave Gentleman (1962-67) The first CD (full of 20 solo hits and 7 wonderful duets) may be the most interesting of the anthology set. It shows Marvin at first reaching his inner Sam Cooke in the early portion of his career going from "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" to "Baby Don't U Do It" and then finding his own voice slowly from "How Sweet It Is" and then finally finding his vocal POWER in songs like "You" (check out the HIGH note near the middle of the song!) and "Grapevine". And then there's the memorable duets with Tammi Terrell that are the essence of true soul. Marvin & Tammi should both be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just for the five songs listed on the album. But then again, the second CD of the anthology set can be the most complex! I mean, this is when Marvin Gaye took FULL ARTISTIC CONTROL and gave us the legendary albums WHAT'S GOING ON, TROUBLE MAN, LET'S GET IT ON, MARVIN GAYE LIVE, I WANT YOU, HERE, MY DEAR, and IN OUR LIFETIME (which was Marvin's first entry into the '80s). You would fall in love with the different production of "What's Going On", without so much of the people talking and just the music, it also shows more of Marvin's vocal backings in its beautiful pitch. "God Is Love", even with its short time, is classic MOTOWN with a gospel-soul feel to it. You had a feeling R. Kelly was listening closely to this album while making Step In The Name of Love. "Sad Tomorrows" with its different feel of a bluesy and classical feel and with that soul is different from the album version (Flying High) from What's Going On and it's also breathtaking that you have to play it over and over. "The World Is Rated X" and "You're The Man" is the brotha's finest work as a political preacher as he sung about the social ills of the world and the political administration. And of course songs from the wonderful "Let's Get It On" album is produced brilliantly here. "Just to Keep U Satisfied" is classic doo-wop! Then you get into the live recording of "Distant Lover" even while edited (for album purposes) and well it's still a masterpiece. "I Want You" and "After the Dance" are classics and of course "Got to Give It Up" is a blue-light in the basement party anthem that is still hot even after all these years. Finally Marvin's later work with "Here, My Dear" and "In Our Lifetime" are produced and helps brings a climatic ending to the entire 2-CD set. From "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962 where he was in love with a girl but somehow stubborn to his or his woman's feelings to when he was looking for love in 1981's funky "Heavy Love Affair", it's particularly the Diary of Marvin Gaye. Nobody in soul music was like this cat and there will be nobody like him again no matter what you say! Marvin Gaye is forever the Original King of R&B! (TAKE THAT, WHITNEY, HA-HA!) ... Makita 6233DWBLE 3/8" 14.4-Volt Drill/Driver Kit with Flashlight Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $383.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This kit combines Makita's much-touted 14.4-volt cordless drill with a stout little job site flashlight that runs off the same long-life NiMH battery. Compared to standard nickel-cadmium batteries, the enviromentally friendly NiMH gives you 30% longer run time and boasts an impressive 2.2 amp hrs. The drill is a little heavier than some of its competitors, but its ergonomic design and extremely well-balanced construction more than make up for its extra weight. In fact, this drill, which delivers the most torque of any drill in its class, was the winner of Popular Science's Best of What's New award in December 1998. The drill's distinctive tip-up design makes for easy use all day either overhead or at shoulder height. Clutch settings change easily, too, and the amount of trigger response in both speed settings (up to the maximum 1,300 rpm) caught our attention. In particular, the Makita has remarkable touch at slow speeds--unlike many other similar drills--which of course lets you start drilling and driving with maximum control. The tight-gripping, 3/8-inch keyless chuck system works great. And--like practically everyone else in the world--we really appreciate the attention to detail and quality in Makita's legendary motor. Simply put, this is a tool designed for extended use under the toughest job site conditions. The tool's brushes are accessible from the outside, too, and easily replaced--a handy feature you won't find with other brands. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (37)
This baby rocks! The exquisite balance, lightness and amazingly precise speed trigger-control make every job a pleasure.I love thatyou don't have to run the battery all the way down before you can recharge them, with these Nickel Hydrides. It has plenty of torque when you need it, too...but oh, what a difference that fine control makes: using self-drilling screws, I can now tackle metal doors as quickly and easily as drywall!Finesse, power, comfort...what more can you ask for? I only wished I'd gotten one of these years ago!

Pedrini Deluxe Stainless Steel Shaker Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bring the art of the cocktail home with this three-part cocktail shaker, which has a tumbler, a snug-fitting lid with a built-in strainer, and a small cap (which doubles as a shot glass or taster) that fits over the strainer. Just fill the tumbler with ice, add the ingredients of a favorite shaken cocktail, fasten the lid and cap, shake vigorously to mix and rapidly cool the contents, remove the cap, and strain into a glass. Unlike shakers plated with stainless steel or chrome that ice easily wears through, this shaker is constructed of solid stainless steel that will hold up to years of cocktail party usage. --Pamela Zytnicki ... The large top fits a bit too tight and I could hardly even get it off. All in all I would not recommend this shaker. Even if your just concerned with having something that looks good on the bar. The shape is very sleek and cool but I feel that the metal causes it to simply look cheap.

Tae-Bo Workout by Average Customer Review: DVD (16 November, 1999) list price: $49.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Billed as the "future of fitness" and hawked by numerous celebrities, Billy Blanks's Tae-Bo actually deserves much of the hype it's receiving. A mixture of boxing punches and martial arts kicks, Tae-Bo is fun and easy. One of the best elements of this four-tape set is that the first tape (which is 40 minutes long), Tae-Bo: Instructional, lays out the movements you need to successfully complete a workout. Once you've mastered the steps, you won't have to fast-forward through half the tape to get to the workout, nor will your workout be slowed down by the repeated lessons. After you feel comfortable with the movements (and they're really quite easy to follow; nothing too complicated to trip you up), you're ready to move on to Tae-Bo: Basics, a 27-minute workout (5 minutes of warm-up, 18 minutes of Tae-Bo, and 4 minutes of cool-down) that will have your heart pounding and your body sweating. Next comes Advanced, a 57-minute workout that will have your heart racing, pulse pounding, and sweat glands working overtime. There's razzmatazz on the moves, with slightly more complicated combinations that should be fairly easy to master if you've completed the first two tapes. This video seriously raises the bar on the difficulty factor. In addition to the short warm-up, the cool-down, and the 30 minutes of Tae-Bo, Advanced Tae-Bo also includes 18 minutes of muscle-crunching floor work. You know you're in trouble when even the guys in the tape have trouble keeping up. Make sure you have truly mastered the first two tapes before attempting this one. The 8-Minute Workout is a highly compacted workout (actually 14 minutes long when you include warm-up and cool-down) for those days when you're too short on time for Basic or Advanced. While the 8-minute idea is compelling, it's not an adequate substitute for the longer workouts. Blanks, a seven-time World Martial Arts champion, is a superb instructor, providing encouragement and careful instruction (if you don't know by the end of the tape to hold in your stomach, that's no one's fault but your own). The only downside to these tapes is the less-than-exciting music. Not only is Tae-Bo great exercise for all levels, but the punches and kicks are wonderful for working out stress and aggression. This is the aerobics exercise video for people who are bored by aerobics. --Jenny Brown ... Read more Features Reviews (201)

Creative Labs NOMAD II 64 MB MP3 Player Blue Average Customer Review: Electronics (14 August, 2000) list price: $329.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Dubbed a Personal Digital Entertainment (PDE) device by Creative Labs, the Nomad II is one of those gadgets that's so fun to play with you'll find yourself forgetting it's useful, too. When portable MP3 players first hit the market a year or so ago, they were relatively simple devices good for one thing: playing MP3 files. Now it seems, as companies have learned consumers want more than just that, today's devices can no longer be described as just MP3 players. This version ships with a 64 MB removable SmartMedia card, but we had mixed feelings about Creative's decision to rely solely on removable media. While it has its advantages, in the form of being able to swap out the kind of music you're listening to, we would have preferred 64 MB of onboard memory, with a SmartMedia expansion slot so we could increase the capacity even more if needed. The Nomad II ships with software called the Creative Digital Audio Center, which is basically a full version of MusicMatch Jukebox Deluxe 5.0 with a Creative Labs skin on it. We liked this addition simply for the fact that MusicMatch Jukebox is simple software to use for creating MP3s from CDs and other audio files. Likewise, while we found the Nomad II Manager software easy to navigate and use, we were left with the feeling that some options were sacrificed in the name of ease-of-use. For instance, the ability to change the order of songs in memory would have been welcome. From an audio perspective, the Nomad II couldn't have performed any better. The equalizer had good settings, and the ability to program user-defined settings was awesome. Furthermore, a wired remote control and bass-enhanced, behind-the-head style headphones completed the package. As additional memory is still relatively expensive, and most of us don't have extra cards lying around the house, there will come a time when you'll tire of the songs on the device. And without the presence of your PC--and no additional SmartMedia cards--you're at a loss. This is when the Nomad II's FM tuner came in handy. During morning commutes, it was easy to toggle between The Howard Stern Show and NPR, as the player holds up to 32 FM station presets. The Nomad II's third--and most overlooked--feature is that of a digital voice recorder. As voice recordings aren't the memory hogs that music files are, the Nomad II can record up to four hours' worth. This feature is perfect for dictating messages to yourself or for the fledging journalist recording interviews. The Nomad II Manager software even allows users to upload voice files from the Nomad II to your PC. MP3 players are great for music lovers on the go. Because they have no moving parts, they're well known for skip-free music. To test the Nomad II, we loaded it up with some hip-hop and headed down to the local BMX spot in San Francisco. With the player clipped on to a belt, we put it through its paces over a multitude of jumps and with more than enough crashes. We did our best to make it skip, but it performed perfectly (though beware--the Nomad II isn't scratchproof). Only after the battery started to get low (the Nomad II offers anywhere from eight to 10 hours of playback time) did performance degrade. But this was easily remedied by dropping in a new AA battery. MP3 music--like everything else technology related--is in a constant state of flux. To that end, the Nomad II ships with reprogrammable firmware that should enable it to support future digital-audio formats and software extensions as they emerge. So, hopefully, you'll be enjoying your Nomad II for years to come. --William O'Neal Pros:

The James Bond Collection, Volume 3 by Average Customer Review: DVD (17 October, 2000) list price: $134.96 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Sean Connery casts a long shadow over the James Bond legacy. He created the movie personaand starred in six of the first seven features, all but establishing the cool cold warrior as theworld's most suave secret agent. The six titles in MGM's third collection celebrate the Connery Bondwith three of his classics, including From Russia with Love, 007's second and perhaps finestouting. A blond, buff Robert Shaw plays Bond's most ruthless nemesis, and Lotte Lenya and the greatPedro Armindáriz costar in this sleek, high-energy trip through the Iron Curtain. Connerytravels to the Far East in You Only Live Twice, which introduces the international criminalconspiracy SPECTRE and its cat-loving mastermind, Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). After a briefretirement, Connery returned for Diamonds Are Forever, his final "official" appearance in theBond series (15 years later he played Bond for a rival studio's Never Say Never Again). Thismore tongue-in-cheek adventure takes 007 to Las Vegas, where he battles Blofeld (this time played byCharles Gray) and his minions--namely, a pair of fey, sardonic henchmen and a team of bikini-cladkarate killers. Octopussy, a colorful cold war thriller and one of Roger Moore's better Bond outings, starsLouis Jourdan as a corrupt Afghan prince and Maud Adams (making her second Bond appearance) as theringmaster of an all-babe traveling circus team that unknowingly carries a nuclear bomb. ChristopherWalken hams it up under a platinum-blond hairdo while his Amazon bodyguard, Grace Jones, growlsthrough A View to a Kill, a silly but often visually impressive adventure that made itobvious Moore was too old and stiff to carry on the Bond legacy. The torch was passed to TimothyDalton in The Living Daylights, an attempt to clear away the camp elements of Moore'sportrayal and return to a lean, hard-edged spy thriller for the post-cold war era. It lacks thelarger-than-life characters and spectacle of previous Bond pictures, but Dalton was a tough, ruthless 007 and a worthy inheritor of the legacy, which was then passed on to Pierce Brosnan. The DVD editions of the films each feature audio commentary by the director and key members of thecrew, "making of" documentaries, and a host of stills, TV spots, trailers, and other supplements.--Sean Axmaker ...
