    Editorial Review

This electric crêpe maker is a bit like a frying pan turned inside out. Instead of a pan shape, it looks a bit like a banjo, and the top is a convex, nonstick cooking surface. Preheat, then dip it directly into the batter, rotate it right side up, and wait until the ready light turns on. Then just flip it back over to drop the cooked crêpe onto a plate and fill with the delicacy of your choice. Each crêpe takes just under a minute to cook, so you can serve as many as your guests can eat without spending the whole meal hovering in the kitchen. A short recipe booklet ranging from pigs in blankets to blintzes is included. --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best $20 I've ever spent!
Ordered this from Amazon, and it is a fantastic machine. Beautiful thin crepes every time. It comes with a basic recipe book, and we used the exact recipe last night. Today I tried the recipe without the butter added because we're on a diet, and the crepes didn't slide off as well. If you're ona low fat diet, I suggest using a little bit of PAM on the surface, and wiping with a paper towel between each crepe. The other thing is we like our crepes a little more crispy, so we turned each over for 2 seconds. Didn't take long at all to get a batch ready. By the way - don't pay extra for the other machine that comes with a dipping tray, just use a regular glass pie dish - easy. This one is so easy to clean too! We love it. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING LITTLE HELPER!!!!
I just purchased this crepe maker to make crepe manicotti for Easter.I had NO idea just how simple and easy it would be!!I kept putting it off thinking it would be a major project and very complicated.....JUST THE OPPOSITE!Making one crepe takes about 3 seconds....just dip the top of the crepe pan into the batter (which is in a pie tin), let it sit and "cook", when the ready light goes on, just turn the crepe maker over and your newly cooked crepe just falls off onto a plate! Each crepe is super thin and perfect. And the amazing part is that when you stack the crepes on top of each other, they don't stick to oneanother!!There is a recipe book included and it is great.Very simple and quick recipes. My manicotti was the hit at Easter dinner!!You have to buy this product!I can't wait to make more dishes!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Something was overlooked!
Before making my purchase I read other customer reviews and decided thiswas a good choice. Was I the only one that did not appreciate the factthat my 12 cup coffee maker water reservoir only had the capacity to hold 9cups?Does this make any sense? Not to me.When I ordered a 12 cup coffeemaker I expect to be able to brew 12 cups. Unhappy to say the least.

Makes a full 12 cups of hot coffee when not using the removable watertray. With the water tray it made only 8 cups.Water filter is not inlinebut floats in the water tank.Makes a great 12 cups of coffee and thetimer/clock is easy to set with a 2-hour auto shutoff.Broke glass coffeecarafe the 1st week and found replacements at Target.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works just as well as [a higher priced coffeemaker]

    Editorial Review

This live recording by the Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961, marked the end of one of the most sublime instrumental combinations in jazz history when bassist Scott LaFaro died in a car accident 10 days later. This unit is underdocumented because Evans, a notorious perfectionist, was reluctant to record. The interchange between Evans on piano, LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums is balletic in its balance of emotional beauty and technical precision. Multiple takes of "Gloria's Step," "Alice in Wonderland," "All of You," and "Jade Visions" show how the invention these players brought to each performance makes repeated material sound like movements in a suite. --John Swenson ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good
I am not as enthusiastic about this album as the reviewers that wrote before me. I often find the Bill Evans trio to be unbalanced, with the drums taking more prominence than they perhaps merit. I was tempted to give the recording three stars. However, I recalled some of the better flashes of brilliance: the absolute, near-telepathic tightness of track 01 (Gloria's Step), the intensity of track 03 ("solar"), Scott LaFaro's compelling bass solo on track 03, and the sublime compositional content of "Jade Visions."
Important historically, so I recommend it to jazz lovers. Everyone else should be wary: decide whether you like it by listening to the sample tracks on Amazon before purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars technologically ahead of its time
Hard to add to what's already been written. I've been savoring this CD for 15 years-- I agree with an earlier reviewer who essentially said this was the height of the trio format, although I gotta give Brad Mehldau props, too.

The thing (besides the playing, of course!) that's always stood out for me is the quality of the recording. Given the date (1961!!), the sound is outstanding-- right down to the crowd noise. It sounds as if it were recorded last week. The sound of LaFaro's playing in particular is exquisite.

This should be right next to Kind of Blue on everyone's shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The height of the trio
Neither Oscar Peterson nor Ahmad Jamal nor Bud Powell acheived the level of telepathy exhibited on this record and the two or three others that this trio recorded before LaFaro's sudden death. The trio may be at its absolute peak on "Alice in Wonderland". Evans often looked outside the jazz songbook to find compositions that he could turn inside out, but who would've thought that this Disney tune could be so revitalized by a piano trio? Evans also takes Cole Porter's "All of You", one of my favorite standards, and completely stands it on its head.
LaFaro's genius on the bass was singular, and I have no doubt that had he not died so young, he would've supplanted Ray Brown and Charles Mingus and whoever else as the king of his instrument. His playing behing Evans is mesmerizing, totally original. His dexterity was unbelievable. But when it came time for him to solo, he really caught fire. Just when you think he's lost himself and descended into some abstract quagmire, he picks up the melody again and it's off to the races. He almost steals the show, which is quite a feat since Evans brings his A-game. Paul Motian, though capable and talented on the drums, does just what he should do--keep the time and stay out of the way. It's a historical irony that the audiences at the Vanguard during these shows were relatively sparse, and fairly inattentive, judging by the constant chatter in the background. The trio, however, remains totally focused, as will the listener. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Box--Why discontinued?!
I punished my boombox for well over two years, strapping it in the right seat of my city tractor--very rough ride--and also in my linehaul rig running twelve hour days dragging triples up and down Interstate 5. I think I finally wasted one channel of the amp, or perhaps broke a connection. I've lost one speaker. I constantly ran the volume wide open with the bass boost on it's second setting with no distortion, so I wasn't worried about frying the amp, but perhaps I did anyhow? I was very pleased with the sound quality. Sony and other manufacturers in the same pricepoint market couldn't hold a candle to my Phillips. Now I've got to find a new model. . .

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars so far
I got my Phillips Boombox CD/radio/cassette player yesterday ahead of the schedule and in good condition. Thank you Amazon.com. I had narrowed my choice down to 2 or 3 choices and hesitated because of the negative reviews about a broken lid; cheesy remote, etc. but I decided to order this one mainly because of the one comment made about good radio reception which was not given in relation to other CD/Radio boomboxes. I do not get good radio reception where I live and I have never been able to get King 98.1 classical station very good at all. Now I get quite good reception and am very happy about that and the great sound of radio and CD. I have not played a cassette but ear phones work great too. I hope it will prove to be very reliable as I love it. The little toy like remote has STOP on it but very strange not to be able to turn on and off the whole system via remote. I am close to it when I use it so visuals and distance of remote no problem.

Kudos to Phillips for the great radio reception both FM and AM and quality of sound. I value clear sound over just volume but volume is great too. I also like the unique and (not all black) looks. Today is day 1 of use and hope to have many more without a problem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fun While It Lasted
Bought this in November as a Christmas present for my 11 year old, so it was opened on Dec. 25.On July 4 (6 months and 9 days later), the CD player failed to detect that a disk was installed. It didn't take long to see that the laser lens inside the player was missing... it had popped out.I found it loose inside the bottom of the speaker case.I could not reinstall it, and it appears that the retention of that lens is simple friction against some side posts.Or possibly, another retention piece is missing and I can't find it.Compared to another brand CD player, the lens mounting is cheap, lightweight, and probably built by the lowest biding subcontractor for Phillips. In any case, it couldn't hold up to an 11 year old playing it outside with friends. So, if you are bedridden or similarly isolated such that this boom box will sit on a sturdy table and not be moved much, this is the unit for you.I gave it 2 stars instead of of only one because it does sound good when it plays. ... Modern and functional, this light-colored wooden tray is an attractive way to serve your guests in style. Measuring 18-1/4 by 12-1/2 inches, it's large enough to accommodate several drinks and a big bowl of chips and dip, or to serve someone a hearty breakfast in bed. The creamy white tray is made of melamine, a plastic laminate often used in contemporary furniture, and the sides are smooth, naturally finished alder with dovetailed corners. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
First I recommend that you read the story before watching the movie.I did and I'm glad.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is a great story, plus you get another 3 in this edition - I enjoyed them all, especially "A Christmas Memory"."House of Flowers" and "A Diamond Guitar" are nicely written too.I easily read all four stories in one day.

I recommend this collection...along with In Cold Blood, also by Capote.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly worth your time!
Breakfast At Tiffany's is a truly one of a kind novel, not to mention a major pop culture phenomenon. It truly mirrors the changes that occurred to American society after World War II.The novel gives a glimpse to the reader what it was like for woman and how their roles in society changed. It's a great tale of human nature as well as overcoming adversity.
One becomes enthralled and entranced by the infamous character, Holly Golightly. She, without a doubt, is defining of a cultured woman of the American 1950's, a contemporary debutant, carefree and aloof. This former starlit actress moves into the narrator's (or "Fred" as Holly refers to him as) apartment building, just a floor down from his apartment. After Holly climbs threw his fire escape to avoid a man who is biting her, they become instant friends seemingly over night. Holly is not a perfect person, but because her flaws are bared for all to see, she is a much more identifiable and loveable character.
Her wild like qualities make her irresistible to every man she comes in contact with, which doesn't omit "Fred", either.Over the course of the story, he falls madly in love with the fiercely independent Holly.Definitely a quintessential case of misguided love.
In addition to Breakfast at Tiffany's, there are three short stories that go along with the motif of human nature.House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory play off of each other, as well as Breakfast At Tiffany's.Each short story relates to how people communicate their emotions with one another.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book of the day
The well-known short novel, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and three of Truman Capote's most famous short stories make for a continually fresh and exciting look at how human beings successfully connect with one another. No matter how many times you read these stories, you will be moved by Mr. Capote's marvelous sense of and appreciation for the specialness of each life and the ways we belong to each other. Having not read Breakfast at Tiffany's for about 30 years, I came away much more impressed with the novel than I was the last time I read it. Perhaps you will have the same reaction upon rereading it as well. If you are reading it for the first time, you have a very nice surprise ahead of you! Breakfast at Tiffany's revolves around Holly Golightly, the former starlet and cafe society item, who floats lightly through life (like cotton fibers in the wind) looking for where she belongs. Ms. Golightly is and will remain one of the most original and intriguing characters in American fiction. Like a magician, she is both more and less than she seems. But she has an appreciation for people and animals that goes to the core of her soul that will touch you (if you are like me), especially in her desire that they and she be free. The novel has a harder edge and is more revealing about human nature than the movie is. Of the two, I suggest you start with the novel and graduate to the movie. You will appreciate the portrayal by Audrey Hepburn of the inner Holly more that way. The same humor is in both the novel and the movie, as well as the innocent look at life for what it can be, believing in the potential of things to work out for the best. Despite that upbeat note, her weakness is that for all of her ability to understand what motivates other people she does not understand herself well enough to know when she does belong with and to others. This is symbolized by her abandonment of her unnamed cat, and quick realization that they do belong together. As for the friends she leaves behind, she never seems to appreciate how much they love her and want to be with her. As a result, she abandons them as well . . . leaving them with memories to warm their winter nights. Mr. Capote is now realized to have been a more autobiographical writer than was appreciated when he first published his fiction. Your understanding of Breakfast at Tiffany's will grow if you keep in mind that it was modeled in part on his friendship with Marilyn Monroe.
