Editorial Review

KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off. --Betsy Danheim

From the Manufacturer

The Artisan mixer's strong 325-watt motor delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily.

The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl with ergonomic handle is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable.

Unique Mixing Action

The beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This unique mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl.

Multiple Speeds

10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job; from very high to very slow stir. It's easy to select the precise speed needed for a perfect mix.

Versatile Accessories

The flat beater, dough hook, and the professional wire whip add to the versatility of the mixer. The flat beater is the ideal accessory for mixing normal to heavy batters. From cake mixes to firm cookie dough, the flat beater mixes quickly and thoroughly.

The dough hook mixes and kneads yeast dough, saving both time and the effort of hand-kneading. The wire whip incorporates the maximum amount of air in whipped mixtures for fluffier whipped cream and angel food cakes.

All attachments are solidly constructed, and attach easily to the stand mixer.

Easy Clean Up

The pouring shield fits around the top of the bowl and prevents ingredient splash-out. The chute makes it convenient and easy to add ingredients.

The tilt-back mixer head allows for easy access to bowl and beaters. A lock lever holds the mixer head securely in place and the bowl fastens tightly to the base.

Optional Attachments

Optional attachments (sold separately) complete the package to make cooking a pleasure. From citrus juicer to sausage stuffer, KitchenAid stand mixers can handle just about any job in the kitchen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great essential for the baker in your life....you!
I love the mixer's power, capacity and ease of use. It makes even garlic mashed potatoes heavenly. I selected a black model to match my Viking kitchens without realizing the color would need more frequent cleaning. If you use this mixer every day buy a cover or another color to save time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I got this mixer about a month ago. I've wanted one for years, but always talked myself out of it (too expensive, too big, etc.) After finding a great deal here on Amazon, I finally caved in and let me say, I'm glad I did. I love this mixer! I was worried I wouldn't use it very much, since I already have a very nice bread machine (a "Zo"). I find that I'm using it all the time though. It really is like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. Cookie dough is so much easier. I'm also making bread with it constantly. It's just so simple to throw the ingredients in the mixer and let it do all the kneading. I've been making fresh bread and bagels every week and it's been no hassle. It handles the dough very well and stays put. It's a big heavy machine. The only problem I was having with it was I was finding it very difficult to remove the bowl to clean it after I was done mixing something. My husband suggested rubbing some vaseline on the bottom edge and that has solved the problem completely. Now I can pop the bowl off with one hand. Anyway, if you've been wanting one of these and if you like to bake at all, do youself a favor and get one. You will be amazed at how much easier it will make your life. I only wish I'd gotten one years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ivan must like Belgian Waffles too...
Well....my wife of 14 years finally found out about my girlfriend of 13 years and my 7 children with said girlfriend.
She didn't take the news very well, cried, yelled at me, smacked me, then packed up all of her stuff.
She informed me that she had found out about the affair and now had met someone else herself, a Russian Dancer named Ivan Karkov. He came over, punched me in the face, and then helped her move all of her things into a van. And off they went.

As sad as I was to see my wife leave, I was even more sad to see our KitchenAid Mixer leaving. It was the secret to perfect Belgian Waffles that my wife would make for me when I actually spent the night there and wasn't "Busy working at Uncle Joey's Mashed Potato Bar".

I didn't know where I would get a mixer like this, I only shop at Old Navy, Home Depot, and Sam Goody. None of those places had them . (I looked.)
I didn't think I would ever be able to replace my Mixer as easy as I replaced my wife one year into our marriage! So, I asked my girlfriend and mother of my 7 children if she knew where to get a Kitchenaid Mixer. She said she buys all her kitchen needs on Amazon. OF COURSE! I didn't even think of it, maybe it's because all I can think of is some sweaty russian dancer touching my first love.....but, I did go buy one.
I finally got a new one and my Belgian Waffle breakfasts are back! Hooray!

Guess I didn't need my wife after all.... ... Read more

If you're looking for a premium food processor, this KitchenAid model is definitely worth investigating. A well-designed powerhouse designed to become any cook's chief assistant, it measures 14 inches tall and 7-1/2 inches wide, with a clear plastic 11-cup work bowl and a bonus mini bowl, two premium-quality blades, and three discs: a reversible thin slicer/shredder, a medium slicer, and a medium shredder. Thoughtful features include a quick-lock lid and an easy-to-use feed tube, plus lots of easy-cleaning aspects, such as a sealed housing, a smooth control panel, and a work bowl that completely disassembles. All parts except the base are dishwasher-safe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Outstanding After 9 Years.
I purchased my KitchenAid KFP600 food processor 9 years ago, and I was recently surprised to find that KitchenAid still produces exactly the same model. I shouldn't have been surprised. This is an exceptional food processor. Mine is in great shape after nearly a decade of moderate use (a few times a week), and I see no reason why it shouldn't last a decade more.

The 11-cup work bowl is ideal when cooking for 2-6 people. The spring that holds the work bowl in place and the cover on works as well today as it did when the processor was new. Although KitchenAid says that you can put the work bowl and cover in the dishwasher, I don't recommend it. The hot water causes the plastic to expand, which can make it difficult to lock the lid onto the bowl. Not so difficult that it can't be done, but the lid squeaks quite a bit after it's gone through the dishwasher. I bought the KFP600 shortly after it debuted, and no one had seen a mini bowl before. It looked useful. I thought I'd use the mini bowl to chop small quantities of food, saving myself from having to wash the big work bowl every time. Now I wouldn't buy a food processor without a mini bowl. I use the mini bowl to chop onions and garlic. It's invaluable. Think you can't chop garlic in a food processor? You can in the mini bowl. I prefer the mini bowl for onions, as well, because there is no risk that half the onion will be mush before the other half is chopped. And the mini bowl and mini blade are easy to clean. You can put them in the dishwasher without any ill effect.

The power base of the KFP600 is fairly heavy and stays put when you run the processor. The motor on mine is as good as new. The "clean touch" off/on/pulse buttons don't protrude from the control pad, so they're easy to wipe off. The machine is generally easy to clean. There is a place to coil the cord underneath the power base. It's difficult to get the cord to coil properly, though, and would be frustrating if you had to do it often. I wrap the cord around the base, where it is out of the way and readily accessible.

In addition to the 11-cup work bowl and multipurpose blade, the mini bowl and mini blade, the cover and the feed tube pusher, the KFP600 comes with a few accessories: There is a dough blade, which I confess to never having used in 9 years. I use the regular blade to make dough, and it has done an excellent job. Also included are 3 slicing/shredding discs which are mounted in the processor with a disc stem. There is a medium slicing disc, a medium shredding disc (both 4 mm), and a reversible thin slicing/shredding disc. There is also an oddly shaped, useless spatula. The accessories are contained in a large plastic storage box, 7"h x 7 1/2"w x 10 1/2"d, that is clear on the top and sides. There is space to store the optional egg whip and the multipurpose blade, as well, but the box is unnecessarily large. The instruction book for the KitchenAid KFP600, which has English and Spanish sections, is conveniently spiral-bound, so it will lie flat. The instructions are straightforward and well-illustrated, and followed by 32 recipes.

I have chopped, sliced, shredded, grated, pureéd, liquified, and made pie dough with this food processor for 9 years. I can honestly say that it has never performed less than perfectly. And it's still going strong.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Food Processor is Second to None!!!
My Mother got me this food processor last year for my birthday and the machine has had barely any rest since.I have shredded, chopped, ground, diced, sliced and mixed just about anything you can imagine. From nuts to pesto, to onions and cake, breadcrumbs and hash browns.Everything comes out perfectly. And the attachments are great. With the large shredder disk I have shredded zucchini for lasagna, with the slicing disk I make perfect onion slices. And the small bowl is fantastic. When I need onion and garlic, I first make the garlic in the small bowl, then the onions in the large - that way I can prep everything without having to wash the bowl in between.

One thing, though:I wish the attachment case were smaller or a little more practical. It takes up so much room on my few square feet of counter space that I usually end up putting things on top of it, which of course makes it difficult to get to the accessories. But I can live with that.

I love how the items clean up - nothing gets stuck, no stains remain and - most importantly - no smells linger.

If I had to do it all over - I WOULD GET THIS MACHINE AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT - I LOVE IT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, simply the best Food processor you can buy
There is NOTHING about this food processor I do not like:
It is simple to set up, it works like a champion, it does every task asked of it with out a struggle and it cleans up easily.I have had two other food processors and this one is better by far in every way.The disks are sharper out of the box and hold the edge better; they are well designed for their given task and perform the tasks flawlessly.KitchenAid has a world of option available as well.Buy it YOU WILL LIKE IT

Beautiful enough to bring to the table and durable enough to outlive the company's 101-year warranty against defects, the six pieces in this set of basic cookware are made of heavy cast iron and clad in Le Creuset's famous bright enamel, which won't absorb odors or flavors and readily scrubs clean. The set comprises a round 5-1/2-quart French oven with lid, a 2-quart saucepan, an 8-by-12-inch roaster, an 8-inch skillet, and a 10-inch skillet with three layers of durable Silverstone nonstick coating inside. (The 8-inch skillet also serves as a lid for the saucepan, and the oven's lid also fits the nonstick skillet.) As cast iron is unexcelled for heat distribution and retention, these pieces cook food evenly and gently without hot spots. They're suitable for the oven and for gas, electric, induction, or ceramic ranges and are delightful to behold on the countertop when not in use. The knob on the French oven's lid is ovenproof to 450 degrees F. Le Creuset's renowned cookware is made in France and is dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars What marvel of cookware!!
Just got this set and we are so happy with it, that we don't know why we didn't buy it sooner. If I could give it more than 5 stars, Iwould! What quality! What fabulous engineering that went into it! We like it so much better than our All-Clad ltd set, and All-Clad is really great cookware. It's just that for me, it doesn't match up to this beauty. It's funny that Le Creuset was our first choice, but for some reason, decided to go for the All-Clad. Well, I made my first meal in it yesterday (chicken braised with sweet garlic) using the 5.5 qt dutch oven, and yellow saffron rice in the 2 qt multi-function pan. Had my dad in law over for dinner, and we all loved the meal. Because of it's fabulous even heat distribution, the meal took less time to cook whileallowing for intense flavor and aroma. It heats up quickly and is a breeze to clean. Then this morning, in the little non-stick fry pan (my set came with the non-stick 8" pan, not the enamel one seen in the Amazon pic), I made a mean omelette and it came out better than the All-Clad I had been using. I mean, this omelette just floated right off the pan! The non-stick coating is not as smooth as on the All-Clad, but I believe that this makes for a better surface, since there is some 'breathing' space between the omelette (or pancake) that allows for better cooking and also better ease of the food sliding out. Today my hubby used it for sauce and pasta, and he loved it! We also used the roaster for chicken, and that came out wonderful as well. So we are overly happy with this awesome cookware...not to mention, the gorgeous flame color!

Washing and drying leafy vegetables has never been simpler or more fun than with this gadget. One hand is all you need to press the soft, cushioned knob to start the spinning; when the built-in brake is applied and the job is done, the basket and bowl can be taken apart and used separately. The knob locks down for easy storage, and the spinner is dishwasher-safe. Use this tool with lettuce, raw spinach, broad-leafed herbs, and greens--they end up clean and oh-so-dry, and the drier your leaves, the better salad dressings will adhere and the less mushy your sandwich bread will become. Puddles at the bottom of your salad bowl disappear... Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great until it broke
This was a wonderful salad spinner for the several months it worked. Then it broke. In my kitchen, very few things break. The occasional wooden spatula after fifteen years of use is fine but things tend not to break unless I drop them. This is my second Oxo product that broke while I was using it (the other one was a knife--yes, a knife snapped in two while I was cutting).I still love my Oxo peeler but with two out of three of my Oxo products breaking, I'm done with Oxo for the most part.

1-0 out of 5 stars worked well until it exploded
I bought this item and used it for about 2 months, then It exploded while I was spinning a salad and was impossible to repair. I went on to buy a Tupperware salad spinner (green) and have been using it for four years with no problems at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Agree it's great ... but it has 1 huge problem
This has got to be the best salad spinner ever, on that point I agree with all the other rave reviews. But just try picking this unit up off a shelf when you have wet hands--or even dry hands!!!!!!! It's difficult!!!! Just wish they would put a small, very small, handle, ridge or inset on the bowl!!! Please!!! ... Read more

For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. For ease in resting the grater on the counter while in use, there's a hard acrylic frame around the metal. The frame also prevents scratches to your countertop. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the slightly curved grating surface makes it easy to use with oddly shaped chunks of chocolate. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Technology, But Don't Buy This One!!
This is the first of two Microplane graters that I purchased, butthis choice received a lower 4* ranking. While this grater is from the standard line, the other is from the professional line. With many kitchen items the term 'professional' is just a hollow designation, but in this case it definitely matters!

All Microplane graters use the same basic technology for cutting -- technology which was originally developed for the woodworking industry but that has been adapted for exceptional service in the kitchen as well. Many others in this group have extolled the Microplane virtues, so I'll concentrate on helping you choose the best one . . . the professional!

Now, what makes the professional so much better? Well, the standard line has 3 major/minor flaws: 1) the easy-grip rubber handle tends to capture water when washed, 2) the plastic molded frame holding the grating surface cracks when washed in the dishwasher, & 3) the head is so incredibly sharp that it must be kept covered, yet there is no easy way to do this except for the original tagboard cover.

The professional version fixes all of these issues. The frame and hollow handle (no water capture points) are stainless steel which eliminates issues #1 & #2 and it also comes with a nice snap-on plastic cover to protect the sharp head surface which takes care of issue #3.I can find _no_ faults with this version.

End result: For an extra $5, BUY THE PROFESSIONAL MICROPLANE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well built - Effortless
I also bought the fine grater from this company. Both are great tools. They will grate mounds of cheese in no time and with no hand fatigue. I have little strenght in my hands, and I was a bit worried about getting a hand grater, rather than an electric. But this greaters are super sharp and do a great job with no effort. The attachment is recommended. For smaller pieces of cheese (or chocolate...) it will save your fingers. With so many poorly designed tools out there, it is a real pleasure to use one as well made as this! Highly recommended

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Silpat
These mats are nice, but they don't work as well as Silpat. They are just as non-stick, but they will stain more than Silpat do --- mine has brown stains where cookies once burnt, whereas my Silpat doesn't.And Silpat isn't even that much more expensive if you use froogle or look at their website for wholesalers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just wish there were more sizes!
This is a great tool - really reduces cleaning time and the agony of cookies or other items that could stick to the pan.I've have no problems using it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow, where did I go wrong???
I used the Matfer sheet for a pizza crust but didn't have it more than 5 minutes in the approx. 400 degree oven before a horrible smell filled the apartment and the smoke alarms began shrieking. This was a brand new sheet, so there was no residual grease on this matt, as one suggested to another experiencing this problem.

A few others with the problem also seem to be in an apartment, so perhaps the smell is better tolerated or not as noticeable in a larger house?Or did a bunch of us get defective sheets?Until I'd find out, I couldn't recommend this product. ... Read more

A great gift, this set provides a cook with enough versatility to accomplish most kitchen tasks. The chef's knife, with a broad blade and curved cutting edge for rocking through a chopping task, chops, minces, slices, and dices. The utility knife slices, cuts, and chops; its 6-inch blade is large enough to trim a chuck roast or subdue a head of lettuce. The paring knife cuts, peels, and cleans fruits and vegetables. Classic three-rivet handles distinguish Pro S from Henckels' other quality lines: TwinStar, Five Star, and Four Star. Pro S handles are heavier and its knives less weight-forward. Handles are also smaller, a feature those with small hands may appreciate. The steel used in the Pro S line is identical to that of the Five and Four Star lines. High-tech welding of larger knives combines three steel types into what appears to be a single piece so a knife's parts have distinct characteristics. The paring knife is forged. While this set is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great knives !
Although some people reported poor quality control for the handles and tops of these knives, I do not agree. The set I recently received is flawless. The blades are sharp and the handle finish is smooth and even. When in use, these knives have perfect balance and work better than any I have used.

If you want the BEST in a quality knife set, you can't go wrong with these.I look forward to adding additional pieces to my collection and won't hesitate to buy the Pro S.

5-0 out of 5 stars These are real knives
Our old knives were hand-me-down stainless no-name junk. These are real knives, nice weight and very sharp.I like the classic style handles that are absolutely smooth and comfortable. I'm keeping the old knives for my wife who is afraid of sharp knives and tends to use them for prying, scraping, etc...

This time of year (late summer/fall) in the northeast is tomato time. The 6" utility knife and the parer are tremendous with tomatoes and they just slide through slippery onion and pepper skins. Makes me feel like I know what I'm doing.

Can't wait to cut up a pineapple, or to cut the skin and fat off of a chicken breast with these knives when doing the same with my old knives was a harrowing experience.

Different kitchenware sites recommend using a magnetic strip to hold knives and we've used one for years, but I bought a Henckels block for these knives so that they wouldn't scratch.

I have found that they do show scratches easilly, like when using the scouring side of a two sided sponge (some light scratches on the parer). This in no way effects thier utility, but I'll be careful in the future. You really should use a soft cloth to wash them (as recommended).

For the holidays (it's my job to carve the turkey), I plan on buying the carver.

Editorial Review

Separating an egg's white from its yolk efficiently without breaking the yolk and creating a mess requires a proper egg separator like thisprofessional-grade, stainless-steel tool. The separator is polished to a mirror finish, the oval handle is channeled to provide a sure grip even when wet, and the hanging loop at the handle's end is cleverly angled so that the 8-1/2-inch separator lies flat against the wall when hung on a peg or a hook. It's also dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more

If you can't install a brick oven in your home, this pizza stone fromSassafras may be the next best thing. Made of heavy-duty, absorbent clay, thestone distributes heat evenly and retains warmth even out of the oven. A simple, time-tested design, the stone features a sloped lip tokeep pizzas in place and a serving rack for carrying or supporting it. 3-0 out of 5 stars They keep breaking!
I've been making pizzas for about thirty years and have yet to have a Sassafras stone last for more than a few months. They work fine at 350 degrees but pizza is better baked at higher temps. Seems to me that Sassafras stones must be fired at too low a temp or something. Anyone know where to get one that doesn't break at, say, 500 degrees?

We had a RECTANGULAR baking stone form Sassafras and loved it. It did not break under normal use. We had to replace it only after it was dropped on the edge of the sink. We thought the ROUND one would provide the same durability. WRONG!!! On the third use we suddenly had 3 baking stones but not a one we could use. I have never been more dissapointed in a kitchen product.

It works beautifully.
Upon the 3rd use, I heard a terrible snap.
The stone broke in half.
Of course, I followed the directions.
Perhaps it is just too thin for real world usage. ... Read more
