    Editorial Review

Bandleader and inventor Fred Waring introduced the first blender in 1936; more than 60 years later the Waring blender remains the standard for the field. Tall and old-fashioned looking with a plated metallic finish on its base, this blender will crush ice and blend frozen fruit beautifully in a few seconds. This blender feels sturdy: the lid, with a cap that doubles as a 1-ounce measurer, fits securely, and the pitcher, made of thick, ridged glass, won't wobble. Many chefs prefer a blender rather than a food processor for soups and creamy sauces--the blades of a good blender whirl more quickly than those of a food processor and will refine a thin liquid such as cream of tomato soup to an incomparably silky texture. This blender is definitely up to that task. The fixed, self-cleaning stainless-steel blades on the base of the pitcher mean the lid is the only separate part to wash. --Maria Dolan ... Read more

I bought this 2 weeks ago. Used it about half a dozen times and the motor's busted. It's smelled since the first use. Other reviewers reported the same. I'm buying one of these instead
KitchenAid KTA-KPCB348PPM Pro Line Chef's Blender with Polycarbonate Jar, Pearl Metallic

5-0 out of 5 stars The blender of the 4 I've owned in the last 2 years.
I make smoothies every morning, and so I wear out blenders fast.I've had this one for two weeks, and I *love* it -- it is way better than the Oster and Cuisinart models that I have gone through.

This is the easiest to clean, least messy blender I have owned. In particular, having the blade and gaskets as part of the glass jar is a huge plus for not allowing any leaks to seep out at all, and for making this extremely easy to clean.

I also love how quiet this is compared to other blenders of the same power ratio.Note well, I'm not saying this is all that quiet, but compared to the others, it is not as loud as they are.(You still wouldn't want to be on the phone while blending.)

Also, this blender does a better job at circulating the contents than the other blenders I've had -- so that even in just 10 seconds of blending, all my frozen fruit is cut up.In the Oster blenders I've had, even after 30-40 seconds there are sometimes big chunks.

The only bad thing I will say about it is that the jar isn't huge, but I still give it 5 stars because the jar is big enough for smoothies and for margaritas, and it does a better job than any other blender I've used.I love how cleanable it is in the dishwasher too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the Kitchenaid
I had a Kitchenaid blender quit on me(second time with the same problem) and found out that they have changed the style and don't make replacement parts for my model.I would have had to buy an entire new blender. From the looks of it, they didn't make the new ones any more robust so I decided to look at other brands.Stumbled across Waring and did a little research.Found out that Waring sells every part for every blender that it has made in the last 60 years. That level of support combined with the favorable reviews led me to take the plunge. After eleven weeks with my new blender, here are my observations:

Noise - I think this one is slightly quieter than my Kitchenaid and definitely quieter than my parents old Oster.Even so, don't plan on trying to watch TV or carry on a conversation with the thing running.Luckily it does it's job pretty quick.

Cleanup - FAR better than the kitchenaid. No disassembly required; just put some hot water and a little dish soap in and run it a few seconds.Rinse and you're done.Dishwasher safe if you feel like it too.Kitchenaid has the jar, lid, jar base, blade assembly, and gasket to fool with.Lots of crevices for food to get stuck in.

Performance - Simply a better performing blender.Blends drinks to a much smoother consistency with no big ice chunks left behind. With the Kitchenaid I frequently had to pop the lid off and give things a stir to get them mixed up and worked down to the blades.I rarely have to do that with the Waring.I don't have anything scientific to back this up, but I think it is a matter of geometry. The Kitchenaid is a wide, squat jar where the contents seem to be able to find refuge from the whirling blades. The Waring is taller & skinnier and it seems that nothing gets away from the blades. The Waring has only two speeds while the Kitchenaid had five, but I don't really miss them at all.I haven't found anything the Kitchenaid could do that the Waring can't do at least equally well.

Durability - The problem I had with the Kitchenaid was the blade assembly. The metal "gear" on the bottom is a press fit onto the shaft that connects to the blade. When this loosens up (such as when an ice cube jams up the blade) there is no way to repair it.New assembly costs about $15.If the Waring had a similar failure, the thing does come apart, the replacement part is about $4, and it is widely available.Other than this, they both seem to be durable and rugged. The glass jars on both are thick and sturdy, and they really give the blender some mass.

So far I've had my blender 11 weeks and have been using it mostly to make frozen drinks and milkshakes. The Waring is by far superior to the blender it replaced. It looks great, performs nearly perfect, and comes from a company with an excellent reputation and parts support. Can't ask for much more than that. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Zero Stars.Cuisinart, and their customer dis-serv is Cr*p!
It takes a lot to make me waste time writing a review on a public forum.I bought a Cuisinart CB-4 for over $100, brought it home, and ended up with food all over the blender and the counter. The bottom of the jar was totally incapable of maintaining a liquid tight seal.I returned the blender to the store for a second unit.Same problem.I tried a third time but the return period expired and I had to take up my issue with Cuisinart.Three months of drawn out email correspondence later (necessary after 5 HOURS of repeated phone-calls, all of which ended in being hung up on by either human incompetence or faulty automatic answering systems) I was finally told that Cuisinart would not do anything to remedy my defective blender.I even suggested a brand-specific letter of credit (i.e. a company coupon to buy something else from Cuisinart/Conair).I was basically told that I was SOL and would get nothing.

This is not the first Cuisinart product I've bought that proved defective off the shelf, but I think it will be the last Cuisnart product I'll ever buy, and after the lack of customer service I'm seriously considering avoiding all ConAir products.

ConAir makes: ConAir, Cuisinart, Waring (yes, they own BOTH major kitchenware product brands! Caveat Emptor!), Jheri Redding®, Grand Finale®, ConairPro®, INTERPLAK, and - not at all surprisingly seeing how comparably criminal the affiliate company is - Southwestern Bell Freedom Phone.Conair also manufactures many faulty private label appliances for major retail chains, so watch out for those too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it
We had this blender for about 1 year and maybe used it a dozen times, before it stopped working. No know reason.Very unhappy with the product as our previous blender, which was another brand, worked well for a much longer period of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars One star is generous for this blender
This blender worked pretty well for four months, although it had a tough time making a really smooth "smoothie."At four months, the black gear mechanism that connects the blade setup to the motor spun right off the base.Cuisinart sent me another blender, but only after they received the defective one back, a process which took almost a month. Most companies will send you the replacement, then ask you to box up the defective one for them to pick up.The replacment blender base had plastic that was so badly warped it could not sit on the counter. We had to repeat the tedious month-long process. The third blender broke as the first after just two weeks. The customer service process did not improve this time.I did not want another of these blenders, so asked for a credit to obtain a Cuisinart non-appliance.At least this was granted.I won't be purchasing another Cuisinart appliance based on their poor service alone. ... Metrokane Manual Ice Crusher, Chrome 7106
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $49.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This retro ice crusher with a chrome-on-metal top says cool in a 1950s kind of way. Patterned after the original Metrokane ice crushers, this attractive unit creates the right size of ice for shaken martinis, perfect margaritas, and frozen daiquiris. The ice is great for soft drinks, too. Use the ice as a bed for fresh vegetables, as well as for shrimp, crab, and lobster cocktails. Simply pop the ice in the top, close the lid, and hold it with one hand so your fingers stay clear of the handle. With your other hand, crank the handle clockwise and the ice is quickly crushed into fine bits. Turn it counter-clockwise for coarse pieces. There's no need to remember which direction to go, because the directions are embossed on the inside of the flip-top lid. The chromed base holds a quart of crushed ice. It comes with a lifetime warranty on the moving parts. --Dale Steinke ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK Product, Lousy Support from Company
I purchased this product, and used it successfully to make large crushed ice. When I followed the instructions for fine ice, turning the crank counter clockwise, the nut holding the crank came loose, and the crusher assembly fell apart. I believe this was due to poor design or improper assembly.

I wrote to the company on April 3, 2004 to request warranty assistance. I received no reply, and wrote again on June 3.

Again I received no reply, so I filed a complaint with the New York State Consumer Protection Board on July 31.

This ultimately resulted in my receiving a call from the company, sending the unit to them at my expense, and receiving a replacement unit a month or so later.

The company told NYSCPB that they had no record of my first letters, although they went to the same address to which I sent the unit, and did not come back in the mail.

I believe the company simply ignores complaints unless they are pressured from a higher authority.

The product does its job fine if you only turn clockwise; if you decide to try counter clockwise, tighten the nut frequently. There is not much difference between "fine" and "coarse."

3-0 out of 5 stars Crusher blades fell out easily
This crusher does the job better than a hammer and a tea towel. But the ice cup is chrome colored plastic so it's fragile.

After 10 uses the blades fell out of the crusher.Even with a set of jewlery making pliers we can't get the parts back together again.

Awfully expensive for the amount of use we got out of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Does Its Job
I bought this because my refrigerator doesn't have an automatic ice crusher. My only suggestion is put it on a towel so it doesn't slide around when you're grinding.Other than that mine's worked great - I haven't yet experienced the 'falling apart' problem that others have.If you want to crush ice this gizmo has worked just fine for me - it's not perfect but I wasn't expecting perfection. It's a functional device that does its job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Second to None
I've had this blender for over a year now, and wow! It's the best, period. It blends anything; no matter how frozen. It has also proven it self to be the most durable blender I've ever owned.I am a bodybuilder, so I use it to blend protein shakes 2-3 times a day.

Like people have said...it is very load. However, that's not an issue to me.Also, it's easier to clean rigth away.Simply fill with some water, add a drop of soap, blend, rise, and you're done.

3-0 out of 5 stars A top name in blenders, but has some flaws
With Waring on the product you know you're buying quality. This is a well built blender with a motor that feels like it could start your car.It is easy to clean and will crush/blend/pulverize anything you throw at it.
The downside, you cant see what you blending or how well mixed it is.The metal carafe is very durable, but I wish it had a pyrex or glass one instead.
The lack of more speed settings is also a bit irksome... but pulsing can obtain the same results.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too small
This is a handsome product and is undoubtedly a good blender, but it should be noted that it is considerably smaller than most blenders. It is described as having a 32 oz container, but it will only blend 24 oz, about half of a standard KitchenAid. A more accurate representation of its functional capacity would have kept me from mistakenly ordering it. ... Read more

Drop in a couple of ice cubes, turn the crank, and fluffy ice shavings drop into the bottom half of the unit. Scoop the shaved ice into a cup or bowl, and drizzle with flavored syrup for a refreshing treat. Or, use the ice as an appealing-looking bed for oysters on the half shell. 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT EVEN A CLOSE SHAVE
Hate to be a crank about this but the crank or handle is very difficult to turn.Once some sort of momentum is established the ice isn't shaved but "chunked."

We wanted to make sno cones or slushies but were disappointed that we couldn't produce either with this shaver.Better results were achieved by breaking the ice with a hammer.

Perhaps this one shaver just had had a flaw - we don't know.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn'tWork
Save your money on this item, turn the handle and most of the ice compacts at the bottom, takes a while to get even quarter a cup of shaved ice let alone a cup, don't plan on making any snow cones with this unit, had to load twice and empty twice to get a dixie cup of ice, not going to please many kids with this machine

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent ice shaver
I bought this ice shaver not long ago. I find out it is easy to use. Drop some ice tubes, push the top, turn the crank and you really can get fluffy ice shavings. But it is pretty slow. If you need lot of ice shavings it isgoing to take you some time. ... Read more

I don't know why the term "soda jerk" stuck, because anyone who whips up luscious shakes is anything but. And this nifty Waring drink mixer is really easy to operate. First, slide the stainless-steel mixing cup up under the agitator and secure the lip under the cup holder, resting the bottom on the cup rest. Then, slide the control switch to low or high and that's it. It's versatile, too, and makes shakes or pancake batter, as well as whirring eggs and milk together for a perfect omelet. Best of all, it whips a cup of cream in less than a minute. And, if you're feeling swank, it mixes up a Grasshopper or Brandy Alexander in a snap. --C. Whitney-Ward ... Read more

My family loves old fashioned, real milk shakes. This product works like a dream and I made a perfect milk shake on the first attempt. It is sort of big and I was trying to find a place to store it in my kitchen and my family laughed. Keep it on the counter, they said, it won't be worth your time to put it away! It is worth every penny!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Pick
It is easy to forget that ice was once delivered house-to-house in thick sawdust-covered slabs. Manageable hunks would be hacked off with either an axe or a pick. Of course these days are gone. Nowadays, we can effortlessly command our refridgerators to produce ice, cubed or even crushed. However, for those of you who yearn for chunky, irregularly shaped ice chips, an ice pick is a necessity.

This particular ice pick is an updated version of the classic tool. The plastic handle and ribbed, rubber swath at the bottom ensure that the pick stays well in hand. One of the main deficiencies of older ice picks was that they either had a metal handle (which got slippery when wet) or a cork handle (which would inevitable deteriorate with use). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The incredible shrinking shaker!
Bought this as a gift for a friend.Am buying a different one as a gift for the same friend. There is a basic design flaw as most materials shrink when exposed to cold temperatures. The lid fits INTO the base of the shaker.Fill it with ice and cold gin and the base shrinks. Thus the lid is STUCK.You have to wait for the ice to melt and the base to warm up in order to pull off the top. That seriously cuts into the number of martinis one can consume in an evening. Not worth the under twenty bucks price.

5-0 out of 5 stars To paraphrase Freud....
Sometimes a cocktail shaker is just a cocktail shaker! Which describes this simple and elegant solution to martini making. It's stainless steel, and (surprise!) it does get cold during proper use. Has a convenient built in strainer and you can crank out the martinis at a feverish pace. Looks nice just sitting on the bar, too. It's the epitome of the basic-yet-functional 20 buck cocktail shaker. Salud!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Casual Home use
I bought this a month ago for home use, and find it fabulous. My only complaint and reason for giving it 4 stars is that it is a little bit large and therefore you can't just fill it up on something like a Margarita or you'll have too much sour.I wouldn't want to use this at work! And, being myself a bartender, I would like to say that I have used a good number of different shakers, and have never seen one that had a lid that just popped off, shakers don't do this.Lids stick because the air inside compresses due to the cold and seals the lid tightly.I have also never seen one that screwed off.It is impractical anyways, it is not hard to see if you're on or off.Anywho, hope this is helpful.Happy shaking! ... As an ice bucket this piece of equipment does not get much of a work out by me since scotch never stays in my rocks glass long enough to benefit from ice. Be that as it may I do like this "Ice Bucket and Tongs".
I am a minimalist by nature so I like to keep my material possessions very utilitarian.
I use this ice bucket as a motorcycle helmet, mirror, ice-cream bowl, waste basket, minnow bucket for fishing, spittoon, salad bowl, porta-potty for camping or when I'm just to lazy to go down stairs, a fruit basket, garbage can, etc. You get the idea. It's well built and multi-functional. The tongs also have varied uses from a salad server to fishing my wallet out of the toilet.
By this, be creative and save money.

3-0 out of 5 stars quite small
I was surprised at how small this bucket is. To me, "32-ounce size" doesn't really describe the actual size. Also it is not insulated or double walled as ice buckets usually are and has no lid to keep the ice frozen - but the quality is top notch. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Two powerful kitchen appliances have been brought together in this blender/food processor by Cuisinart. The heavy-duty motor base is up to both blending and processing tasks, and won't "walk" on the counter, even when it's crushing ice. Use the blender with its dripless pour spout to make and serve 40 ounces of frozen drinks or to purée baby foods or soups; use the processor to prep up to 3 cups of vegetables, cheeses, nuts, and meats. With one motor base, it's simple to keep the blender out on the counter and then bring out the processor attachment for special tasks.

This is an amazingly sturdy product, with tight fitting lids, a heavy glass blender jar, and a motor that chops meats or ice with equal aplomb. Most attachments go in the dishwasher, and the flat touch pad, which has seven settings, including "ice crush" and "pulse," is easily wiped down with a sponge. This dual appliance comes with a booklet detailing how to use all the features, and 48 recipes, from cranberry-orange mimosas to classic mayonnaise. --Maria Dolan

Editor's Choice: Cuisinart's SmartPower food processor is our choice for the best food processor under $100. This blender/food processor combines two kitchen appliances into one useful package. It is heavy-duty, can both blend and process most things, and sits on the counter without shaking around. The processor has 350 watts of power and seven speeds, and the plastic bowl size is 3 cups--it also has a 40-ounce glass blender jar. It comes with one standard blade and one slicing/shredding disc. Most attachments go in the dishwasher, and the flat touchpad wipes down with a sponge. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Drip Drip Gush!
This is the first review that I have ever written. Hopefully, this is also the last review that I will ever write because I am motivated solely by my utter disbelief at the garbage that I have purchased. After using the blender once it leaks like a sieve! I tried taking it apart and putting it back together. Some improvement, but still leaking. Garbage!

3-0 out of 5 stars two for the price of one...too good to be true?
This product is great for those who enjoy the convenience of having two mediocre products in one.

The putative food processor is so small and the parts are fitted together not so well...I feel it takes me a full hour of multiple attempts to get all the parts fitted together, so I can then chop half an onion. It is not the same quality as the full-size Cuisinart food processors (in those the parts fit together really well... satisfying "click" and then it is securely assembled). These parts are cheaper and more cheaply made and it takes so much effort (and lots of cursing) to get it assembled and disassembled.I no longer use this feature, as I do have a full-size Cuisinart.

The blender part works just fine.I can only hope it continues to do so...It has no problem pureeing the frozen fruit for my whey shakes.

4-0 out of 5 stars loud but powerful
I benefited from this reading this forum before I bought my duet blender.Since others had said that the plastic base was the problem, I carefully examined it when it arrived. It had a hairline crack that I never would have noticed if I had not been alerted to the problem. I sent it back and got a new one without the problem. My has been working fine for well over a year.We use the blender 1-3 a day. It does a good job on ice and fruit. It is loud, but not too bad. The food processer I use about once very two weeks. It is VERY loud.I have to warn others and concentrate at not listening or it hurts my ears.I would use it more often if was not so loud. ... Editorial Review

Spiegelau's Vino Grande series of glasses is part of a connoisseur line designed with the characteristics of each beverage in mind. This tall, narrow glass is fit for serving everything from gin and tonics to cherry colas. Tap the glass gently with your fingernail and you'll hear the distinctive ping of fine crystal. This glass measures 5-3/4 inches high, with an elegantly tapered top. The glasses are billed as dishwasher-safe and are sturdy enough for everyday use, as proven by their use in restaurants. --Irene Svete ... Read more

It looks very elegant with 4/5 full of iced beverage in the sunny afternoon kitchen. It feels so good while holding the glass and chatting with friends. The distinguish quality has captured every guest in the house. The size is just right for such occasions.

    3-0 out of 5 stars "GRANDE" = NOT-SO-GRANDE
The glasses arrived today in a large box, which I opened and was shocked to see another smaller box inside..... The glasses are disappointingly small. The quality appears to be good, and the design is appealing. If these glasses were just a little bigger (say 13-16 ounces) I'd rate them at 5 stars. I'm only keeping them because of the other glasses I ordered as a package deal that got me a GREAT price........

5-0 out of 5 stars a whole can of soda fits in one of these!
I have to disagree with the last person, the glasses are not too small. They are just not over-sized.I just poured a whole can of soda into one of them.I've had them for a while (at least two year), and really love them.Unfortunately, i noticed that one of them has chipped - but that's after extensive use. ... This book has it all - beautiful photographs, recipes that actually taste as good as they look, and a little education on rum.I found myself wanting MORE recipes, but what is here is gold. The book itself is attractive, slim and well-made. It will also educate you on rum, how it is made, and differences between them.

Although, as another reviewer said, it doesn't matter how good the book looks, it's how the recipes turn out. This book delivers, hands down. You'll be glad you bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Things In Small Package
Not a big book, but one that packs a punch! (pun intended)
The recipe for pork tenderloin is probably the best anywhere. My husband has made it for friends and a Christmas Eve dinner. It got rave reviews. The flan with marinated (in rum) fruit is an amazing dessert. The mojito recipe works like a charm. You can do a complete dinner with this book, or just pick and choose to complement other menus you're planning. What else can I say except mmmmm ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Get out your grass skirt!
This is a great recipe book for tiki drinks you'll love in any time of the year. ;-) I wished it had listed more food recipes than drinks, but they are still all very tasty. I suggest getting this book if you are big on theme parties and need some amazing recipes to wow your guests. Yum yum! ... Read more
