Four Rooms by Director: Alexandre Rockwell, Quentin Tarantino, Allison Anders, Robert Rodriguez Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (06 May, 2003) list price: $9.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This unbearable quartet of stories was written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), and Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. With Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas. --Tom Keogh ... Read more Features Reviews (100)

Become What You Are Average Customer Review: Audio CD (03 August, 1993) list price: $11.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (24)
Unfortunately, the press was a little too preoccupied with Hatfield's proclaimed virginity and relationship with Dando to give the music a proper listen. Shame, because Become What You Are - recorded as the Juliana Hatfield Three with bassist Dean Fisher and drummer Todd Phillips - is a simple and brilliant record that she's yet to match. Much has been made of Hatfield rarely going beyond the lines of her stock template. Granted, a cursory or superficial listen to Become What You Are could leave you thinking one song sounds much like another, but the unfussy formula works well enough to warrant many repeated listens. And no song outstays its welcome. Lyrically, she's at her strongest on this set, confessional, witty and on the right side of obscure. The opening track, Supermodel, is a catty dig at the transitory careers of overpaid catwalk stars ("the highest paid piece of ass, you know it's not gonna last...), while the girly Hatfield is at play on My Sister, describing the love/hate relationship with a fictional sibling ("I would do anything to let her know I care, but I am only talking to myself cos she isn't there"). Her wry lyrics are matched at every corner with strong hooks and basslines. Hatfield's cutesy/tough-girl act continues in equal measures: the deliciously venomous and punchy A Dame With A Rod, on which Hatfield avenges an attack on a woman ("You're gonna rot in the ground"), sits next to the unworldly girl on Feeling Massachussetts ("Take me somewhere I really wanna go... introduce me to someone really cool"). Hatfield does twee best on Spin The Bottle, although it's a bit of a throwaway moment. We should assume Hatfield wasn't taking her own story about kissing movie stars in closets at parties too seriously. It is nevertheless the most commercial cut and, given the right promotional push, could have been a hit, although it's appearance on the Reality Bites soundtrack did give it a new airing. Standout track President Garfield - allegedly an ode to rocker Henry Rollins - is almost two songs in one: the first two minutes a slow, contemplative amble down the streets of Washington, the latter half a bass-heavy brooding review of the hero ("Neck like a tyre, iron man...I'm only human, I am weak, I want his power inside of me"). Things get darker still on the closing I Got No Idols, an intense, two-minute lament from a woman eager to stand on her own too feet. The album went hugely underbought, of course, and the live reviews didn't do her any favours. Britpop was just around the corner and everyone in the UK momentarily ignored most of what was coming out of the US. Even the Lemonheads, who were actually selling quite a few records at one point, quickly disappeared off the radar. For the follow up 18 months later, Hatfield was solo and with a little more angst on her plate for Only Everything. A solid set, it was more varied than Become, and could have been its equal had Fleur De Lys, Dumb Fun and Dying Proof fell on the cutting-room floor. 1998's Bed was a disappointing affair, while 2000's double whammy - the acoustic Beautiful Creature and the aggressive Total System Failure - would have been better as one, shorter album. 2004's In Exile Deo is unlikely to turn the sales tide, and she seems to have spent the last couple of years listening to Sheryl Crow records. Presumably the innocence and simplicity of early materialdoesn't sit comfortably with a woman in her late thirties. Hatfield will make more great records, but the quality of Become What You Are and much of former band The Blake Babies' output seems an awfully long time ago now.

The Adventures of Milo and Otis by Director: Masanori Hata Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (07 May, 2002) list price: $9.95 -- our price: $9.45 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making the film an international favorite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Kids love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too.--Tom Keogh ... Whirley Pop 6-Quart Hand-Cranked Stovetop Popcorn Popper Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $24.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Face it, sometimes the best thing about going out to a movie is the popcorn, those big plump kernels that always seem so much better than what you pop at home. But this simple stovetop popper changes all that. It really does make awesome, fresh-popped corn that might make you start renting videos instead. The sturdy aluminum pan has a clip-on lid with a stay-cool wooden handle. A turn crank on the handle spins the key element: the stainless steel stirring system that keeps the corn moving across the bottom of the pan, for even heat and oil distribution, ensuring the best popping results. The lid has steam vents, to help keep the popcorn dry and crisp. The enclosed booklet is a wonderful resource, with not only clear and detailed instructions, but also dozens of recipes and popcorn history and lore. These are folks who really do know their popcorn, and the results are outstanding. --Cynthia Nims ... Read more Features Reviews (98)

Harold and Maude by Director: Hal Ashby Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (19 August, 2003) list price: $9.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever made. Much of the earlier humor arises from Harold's outrageous suicide fantasies, played out as a kind of twisted parlor game to mortify his mother, who's grown immune to her strange son's antics. Gradually, however, the film's clever humor shifts to a brighter outlook and finally arrives at a point where Harold is truly happy to be alive. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly won't appeal to all tastes (it was a box-office flop when first released), but if you're on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you've ever seen. --Jeff Shannon ... Before These Crowded Streets Average Customer Review: Audio CD (28 April, 1998) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Dave Matthews Band is moving its music forward incrementally. While Before These Crowded Streets offers more of the folky melodies and vaguely international rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding subtle new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water"; banjo Bela Fleck steps in, too. Most intriguing, however, is the modernist string arrangement from the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthewsat least partly fulfills his obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band here; at the same time, Streets should keep his fans satisfied. --Rickey Wright ... Read more Reviews (618)

The Muppets Take Manhattan by Director: Frank Oz Average Customer Review: DVD (01 February, 2005) list price: $14.94 -- our price: $11.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (49)
As the film opens, the Muppet gang are graduating from college, and the big show they put on for the school is such a hit that they decide to go to New York and take their show to Broadway. It is a decision that helps keep everyone together, but even Kermit the Frog has a hard time getting any Broadway producers to sign a show featuring song and dance performed by a frog, a pig, a dog, etc. When hope is all but lost, everyone decides to split up and live their own lives - they feel as if they have been unfair to Kermit by depending on him alone for so long.Kermit vows to stay and sell the show, and he can't way to get the gang back together.Luckily, Kermit has developed a friendship with a fashion design student/waitress and gets a job at a diner (which also features a funny and delightful little group of rats).Kermit's new three-phase plan to sell the show offers a lot of comedy but doesn't exactly pan out the way he would like. Then he has to make things right with a certain someone who has been stalking him.In the end, of course, everything works out for the best - but not before Kermit completely disappears for the two weeks leading up to opening night. This film boasts a number of cameo appearances by well-known personalities: Dabney Coleman, Joan Rivers, Gregory Hines, Linda Lavin, Art Carney, Elliott Gould, Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, and many others (including a pre-Star Trek: The Next Generation Gates McFadden). Some extra special guests from a certain street everyone knows and loves also show up for the big finale. As always, the Muppets themselves steal the show, and there are some really comical scenes of physical humor as well as funny dialogue. You even get to see what the gang might have been like if they had all met as children.By all means, watch and enjoy The Muppets Take Manhattan, but I think there are better Muppets movies out there. ... Hearing Voices Average Customer Review: Audio CD (09 October, 2001) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $17.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The founder of Windham Hill Records, Will Ackerman has stretched his sound occasionally with different instrumentation, but Hearing Voices is an entirely new approach. Picking up on his uncredited production of Samite's Stars to Share album, Ackerman enlists a group of singers that includes Samite, Happy Rhodes, Curtis King, and Heather Rankin to intone his quiet meditations, sometimes with English lyrics, other times with Native tongues and imaginary dialects. As a result, Hearing Voices has a hymnlike quality on tracks like "Somewhere in All This Green" and "Fear Not Mary." Rankin gets to do some ecstatic Gaelic chanting on "Walk with Me," which also features Ackerman's only electric guitar lead on record. Ackerman tosses in a couple of wistful acoustic guitar solos, but it's the vocal tunes that continue to haunt on this quietly daring departure.--John Diliberto ... Read more Reviews (14)
Why unexpected? From what I have seen of Ackerman's work I anticipated that the music would have strong folk overtones, similar to what he does as a soloist, and even in an ensemble. What I found is that, while he continues to use melody over a rhythmic chordal architecture, he has reduced the amount of arpegiation that marked his work and turned his focus to the intermingling of thematic voices. The catalog of languages that the performers use is extensive - Luganda, Gaelic, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Hindi, Sanscrit, English, and even invented.Obviously the intent isn't to produce an 'international' album, but to emphasize the importance of the sounds of the words aside from lyrics. The result, however, is quite a bit different thant that of other musicians who have investigated this form (such as Vas and Wim Mertons). The selection presented is self-consistent - they play against each other smoothly, and it is very easy to approach this album as a work in its entirety rather than just a collection of works. As usual, Ackerman demonstrates his ability to get musicions to work together to create something that is more than a brilliant solo performance. That, coupled with the usual perfection we expect from Windham Hill productions, makes this one of the must have albums for those of use who like soft jazz and new age work.
This is uplifting music, suitable for meditation, going to sleep by, or just sitting and imaging. The non-English lyrics serve to let the music and the sound speak for itself. The voice of the guitar is quite distinguishable here, and is not drowned out or even diminished by the voices. There is a blending. Nor is the music monotonous. Some is strictly Idyllic, but some has more of an upbeat. This isn't to say that it's envigorating, but it is deep and ultimately satisfying. There are those who prefer Ackerman without voices, or only his own.But for those who enjoy an Enya type quality with expert guitar blending in, this is for you. ... Read more Asin: B00005OW52 |
