4-0 out of 5 stars !!You gotta love Gumby!!
Not all songs, folk tales, books, and now vidoes stand the test of time but these Gumby videos certainly do just that. Not only was I excited to watch them (35 year old female professional) my two young children thought they were especially fun to watch.

It's nice to watch a video with your children that you don't need to worry about violence or questionable subject matters.

Sure it's silly, sure it's a little weird--It's Gumby and we love it. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This unbearable quartet of stories was written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), and Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. With Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice collection of auteur directing...
    Genre: Comedy

    Genre Grade: C+

    Final Grade: B-

Tim Roth gives a hilarious performance in this collection of four short films by four different directors. Allison Anders directed the first segment of the film. She is pretty much an unknown and according to this part of the film, she isn't much of a director. Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup) directed the second segment, and it was hilarious and quirky and entertaining, which lifted my spirits for this seemingly stupid film. Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado) did an excellent job in the third segment of the film, giving the best direction in the whole film. Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) wrapped up the movie with his segment, but it didn't compare to the dark humor that Rodriguez gave the film. Tarantino did stick to his roots though, writing great dialogue and having a little fun with shock value too. His mistake is that he wrote himself into the script and gave the worst acting out of anyone else in the film.

In the end this was a funny and interesting compilation of stories that ultimately makes Tim Roth look like a hysterical madman. Check it out if you enjoy any of the directors of the film or if you like Tim Roth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern masterpiece!
Unless you count New York Stories, this is probably the only movie of it's type. 4 directors, 4 stories, 4 rooms, 1 hotel and 1 bellhop boy staggering from room to room and landing himself in all sorts of situations such as having the privalige of chopping off a man's finger, getting off with a witch, and having to babysit two young trouble makers plus much more!

Everything takes place either in the hotel rooms, corridor, elivator or hotel office. It's brilliantly done, with the 3rd and 4th rooms being the funniest and best put together. However the first two rooms are enjoyable also.

It had never really been tried before, however the four directors including Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodrequez, managed to pull it off! It's just a shame that this movie often goes completly unrecognised. It's totally under-rated. Buy it now. Really, no ones movie collection is complete without this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skip the first room
The movie starts with a bellhop starting his shift. He is the night bellhop in what seems to be a high class hotel. He is the only one working that night and has to contend with four different roooms (not all at the same time) which is where the name comes from. Each room has its own segment and is written by a different writer. The first two I don't remember who did them, but the last two are done by Robert Rodriguez(#3) and Quentin Tarintino(#4).
Now that all of the rooms are fun to watch. The first room is horrible and contains one of the worst actresses in the world, Maddona. Stay away from this room and don't bother watching it. Basically it features a group of witches attempting to resurrect their leader. They all bring different items but one of them doesn't. She needed to bring sperm but didn't, so guess who is going to give them some? That's right the bellhop. She doesn't want to take advantage of him but is forced to. There is some nudity in this scene(and it is a beautiful women who is nude) but that would be the only reason to watch this scene, and I say just fast forward until you get to it.
The second room contains a couple who are in the middle of a major conflict. The bellhop walks into the room to find the husband with a gun and the wife tied up. The husband is accusing the bellhop of committing adultery with his wife. He denies it and they go back and force. The bellhop gains his trust then loses it, and back and force like that. It was quite funny but not my favorite.
The third room contains Antonio Banderas(I don't think I spelled his name right) and an actress playing his wife. They want to go out but they have two childen, a young son and older daughter. These two children are trouble and you can tell from the moment they appear on the screen. Now in order to get away from their children they pay the bellhop to check on them every hour. The parents leave, mischief occurs, children don't listen, and more mischief happens. Loved this scene, one of Robert Rodriguez's greatest works. The only thing of his I liked more was From Dusk til' Dawn.
Then there is an intermission where the bellhop complains to the pothead manager of the hotel, who is played hilariously by Kathy Griffin. Good break up from the rooms that perfectly sets up the final and greatest room of the movie.
The final room was written and stars Quetin Tarintino. Quentin plays a famous actor who rented the penthouse with a bunch of his friends. They are drunk and bored and asked the bellhop for what seems to be a bunch of random items. When he delivers these he is instantly greeted by a drunk and merry Quentin. He invites him to drink a little with him and another of his friends, while Bruce Willis argues with his wife on the phone in the bedroom. Eventually he asks to the bellhop to help out in an outrageous bet with crazy circumstances(don't want to give it away) and the bellhop eventually after much begging to do it.
That is the basic plot. It is a good comedy and for a little more than 10 bucks it is a great addition to anyone's DVD collection. Get it, skip the first room, and enjoy. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Three's company
In 1993, Hatfield's friend and former bandmate, Lemonhead Evan Dando, was flopping about at festivals, wearing dresses and being the NME's darling, and jangly American indie guitar rock was in. And Hatfield was really the only female in her field, so she really shouldn't have found it so hard to break through in the UK at a time when Throwing Muses and Belly were having top 10 albums.

Unfortunately, the press was a little too preoccupied with Hatfield's proclaimed virginity and relationship with Dando to give the music a proper listen. Shame, because Become What You Are - recorded as the Juliana Hatfield Three with bassist Dean Fisher and drummer Todd Phillips - is a simple and brilliant record that she's yet to match.

Much has been made of Hatfield rarely going beyond the lines of her stock template. Granted, a cursory or superficial listen to Become What You Are could leave you thinking one song sounds much like another, but the unfussy formula works well enough to warrant many repeated listens. And no song outstays its welcome. Lyrically, she's at her strongest on this set, confessional, witty and on the right side of obscure.

The opening track, Supermodel, is a catty dig at the transitory careers of overpaid catwalk stars ("the highest paid piece of ass, you know it's not gonna last...), while the girly Hatfield is at play on My Sister, describing the love/hate relationship with a fictional sibling ("I would do anything to let her know I care, but I am only talking to myself cos she isn't there"). Her wry lyrics are matched at every corner with strong hooks and basslines.

Hatfield's cutesy/tough-girl act continues in equal measures: the deliciously venomous and punchy A Dame With A Rod, on which Hatfield avenges an attack on a woman ("You're gonna rot in the ground"), sits next to the unworldly girl on Feeling Massachussetts ("Take me somewhere I really wanna go... introduce me to someone really cool"). Hatfield does twee best on Spin The Bottle, although it's a bit of a throwaway moment. We should assume Hatfield wasn't taking her own story about kissing movie stars in closets at parties too seriously. It is nevertheless the most commercial cut and, given the right promotional push, could have been a hit, although it's appearance on the Reality Bites soundtrack did give it a new airing.

Standout track President Garfield - allegedly an ode to rocker Henry Rollins - is almost two songs in one: the first two minutes a slow, contemplative amble down the streets of Washington, the latter half a bass-heavy brooding review of the hero ("Neck like a tyre, iron man...I'm only human, I am weak, I want his power inside of me"). Things get darker still on the closing I Got No Idols, an intense, two-minute lament from a woman eager to stand on her own too feet.

The album went hugely underbought, of course, and the live reviews didn't do her any favours. Britpop was just around the corner and everyone in the UK momentarily ignored most of what was coming out of the US. Even the Lemonheads, who were actually selling quite a few records at one point, quickly disappeared off the radar.

For the follow up 18 months later, Hatfield was solo and with a little more angst on her plate for Only Everything. A solid set, it was more varied than Become, and could have been its equal had Fleur De Lys, Dumb Fun and Dying Proof fell on the cutting-room floor. 1998's Bed was a disappointing affair, while 2000's double whammy - the acoustic Beautiful Creature and the aggressive Total System Failure - would have been better as one, shorter album. 2004's In Exile Deo is unlikely to turn the sales tide, and she seems to have spent the last couple of years listening to Sheryl Crow records. Presumably the innocence and simplicity of early materialdoesn't sit comfortably with a woman in her late thirties.

Hatfield will make more great records, but the quality of Become What You Are and much of former band The Blake Babies' output seems an awfully long time ago now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe this is out of print
This was Juliana Hatfield's best and most popular CD, and it included her breakout hit "My Sister".She was one of the trailblazers in "bubblegum grunge", making the combination of "girl"-ish, innocent vocals and driving Nirvana-era grunge guitar really work.I rediscovered this CD in my collection just the other day and popped it into the dash, and to my pleasant surprise it sounds just as good now as it did 11 years ago.I highly recommend this one, if you can find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Play me some music that lifts me to my feet"
Become What You Are came out during my first year of junior college and it was one of my favorite CDs at the time.I think my mom got sick of me playing it over and over.Listening to it 11 years later, I figured I had outgrown the music. No way!It still sounds great! From pop sensations like "My Sister" and "Spin the Bottle" to rockers like "A Dame with a Rod" and "I Got No Idols" to slower tracks like "For the Birds" and "Mabel" it is a fun album from beginning to end.The lyrics are sophomoric at times, but the music is so catchy, you don't notice them and end up singing along to silly lines like "I want his power inside of me.And I'm not talking about a piece of meat, I'm saying something really deep." Every song here is great but "Mabel" is my favorite. The lyrics are actually intriguing on this track ("Check out that lady she's talking to herself, check out that lady, she's gonna go to hell") and it starts out with a slow, almost haunting sound and then rocks out at the end."President Garfield" is also an interesting track although the lyrics become very weird at the end. Fun sidenote: "My Sister" gives reference to the Violent Femmes and the Del Fuegos, "before they had a record out. before they went gold."Become What You Are is a very enjoyable album and I recommend it to anyone who likes "alternative" rock. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great calender, not 16 months though
First of all, this is a very cool calender. It is printed on high quality paper and is very colorful. It says its 16 months but its not really. While all the months for 2002 are listed with a picture on the top page and the date boxes on the bottom page the last 4 months of 2001s dates are all on one page. Anyway, the pictures for each month are like this:

    January: Spongebob flipping Crabby patties
    Feburary:Spongebob with sandy and valentines
    March: Jellyfish hunting
    April:Spongy next to "FUN" sign
    May: Spongebob doing some karate
Junelifting weright with SB and sandi
    July:Bubbles
    August:Dried out spongebob
    September:SB with boat instructer
October: Shave me down and make me round
    November:All the characters playing together
    December:SB and patrick at christmas

Every month also has the characters pictured saying somnething from that episode. 4 stars because its not 16 months

    Rubik's Simpson's Homer's Head Puzzle

1-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but cheaply made
I greatly enjoyed this puzzle for about 20 minutes. After that, it was in broken pieces. The problem is the oddly shaped pieces do not align well, and any amount of force breaks the inner structure and ruins the whole toy.So, if it was made better it would be an awesome toy. However, its so cheaply made I dont recommend getting it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great puzzle, but be careful
I got the Homer's head puzzle and the classic Rubick's cube for Christmas.Being a huge Simpson's fan, and a tad intimidated with the cube I started playing around with Homer's head, and found that I could solve it.Like others have said it's deceptively complicated, but lots of fun.The *only* downside to this puzzle is that it does seem to break easily.I broke mine last night and was bummed out.I don't think there's any way to fix it.So, get this fun puzzle, but be gentle with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Factor
I purchased Homer's Head for my son-in-law as a Christmas present 2 years ago. All day everyone played with it,then put it down. My son, picked it up and turned it every which way he could to mix it up. My son-in-law then tried to solve it. No luck! Two years later still unsloved, with many hours of trying to solve it between several relatives, my son again picked it up, turned it once and it broke apart! I feel this toy is good for adults with the patience to keep trying, but not for children. I plan to buy my son-in-law another one since he is a very big Homer fan. Everyone seemed to enjoy it so much! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice cookbook!
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift. I really have enjoyed it ever since, even though I mostly cook without ever looking at any of the recipes. This book is very nicely organized and is a wonderful reference source, though. I cooked quiche and chocolate chip cookies from it, as well as many other things, and they all turned out beautifully and yummy! I also love how the book provides caloric information per serving on each of the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook, one small annoyance
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift and it has been a daily fixture in meal preparation. So many different recipes, there is something for every family. The one thing that annoys me about the cookbook, is also the thing I love. The book lays flat with it's 3-ring binder. Very convenient! Yet the pages are not reinforced so the wear on the pages will eventually tear the holes. I now have many loose pages in my cookbook. Would love to see the next edition have some kind of reinforcement along the hole punched edge.
Another big plus I've discovered is the page of metric conversions. My husband and I are currently stationed in Europe and it's great to be able to just flip to another section when I'm trying to use my European stove or use something packaged in grams but measured in ounces in the recipe. For some reason my husband doesn't like me to drag the laptop into the kitchen to look up conversion charts while I'm cooking. :)
I would recommend this cookbook to everyone. It's great for beginners and experienced cooks alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT Cookbook
I originally purchased this book for my mom but when my boyfriend saw the book he LOVED it too!So I had to go and purchase another one so they both could have the cookbook at there dispose all the time.

It has GREAT recipes - We've made SO much from this cookbook.
The recipes are not difficult to prepare and make.I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone.

    Editorial Review

Georgia O'Keeffe's unconventional paintings of mountains, bones, and flowers--often on a giant scale--and her clear, simple forms and colors made her an early pioneer of a new American modernism. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in summer 1997 in Santa Fe, presenting works from all periods of the artist's long career. Providing a remarkable virtual tour through the museum, this beautiful clothbound volume with French folded jacket features essays by leading art writers such as Barbara Rose and Mark Stevens, and a new, thorough chronology by Charles Eldredge. Included in the 86 full-color images and 4 lavish gatefolds are many works that have never been reproduced before, which are complemented throughout by black-and-white photographs documenting the extraordinary life of this courageous, inventive artist (1887-1986). For O'Keeffe fans unable to travel to Santa Fe for a personal pilgrimage, this book is the next best thing. ... Read more

I really liked this. Lots of color reproductions of O'Keeffe's paintings, including several "fold-out" double pages.Covers her early mid and late periods. This is also a book about the museum devoted to her in New Mexico, The size of the book is nice too.A bit smaller than "coffee-table" huge dimension.A book you can browse through. Can be an introduction to Georgia O'Keeffe's art and life for somebody just learning about her, or can be extra fun for a real O'Keeffe fan. ... I bought mine ages ago at the New York Cake and Bakery, and to this day the edges are sharp and they've retained their shape. They fit in neatly inside their little tin, and they're handy when making shortbread or other cut-out cookies... especially the teeny heart that lets you cut hearts out of a heart. Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making the film an international favorite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Kids love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too.--Tom Keogh ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Face it, sometimes the best thing about going out to a movie is the popcorn, those big plump kernels that always seem so much better than what you pop at home. But this simple stovetop popper changes all that. It really does make awesome, fresh-popped corn that might make you start renting videos instead. The sturdy aluminum pan has a clip-on lid with a stay-cool wooden handle. A turn crank on the handle spins the key element: the stainless steel stirring system that keeps the corn moving across the bottom of the pan, for even heat and oil distribution, ensuring the best popping results. The lid has steam vents, to help keep the popcorn dry and crisp. The enclosed booklet is a wonderful resource, with not only clear and detailed instructions, but also dozens of recipes and popcorn history and lore. These are folks who really do know their popcorn, and the results are outstanding. --Cynthia Nims ... Read more

So first off- there is no definitive link between Aluminum and any diseases- if there were would we still have aluminum cans for our soda? Now onto the popping! This is a good popper- only problem you do not want to overfill it- too much corn and the stirrer gets stuck and then you get burned kernels on the bottom.
I make up my olive oil and garlic salt and pepper popcorn in this and it tastes great! Do be careful with the lid- if you are not you can bend the hinges and break it- like my roommate did so I am back to using my 6 quart pot with a glass lid.

I have been using the Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper for over a year now and I love it!It doesn't take long to make the popcorn and the popcorn tastes great! It is healthier to make popcorn this way than buying packaged popcorn at the grocery.I highly recommend this product.

    Editorial Review

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever made. Much of the earlier humor arises from Harold's outrageous suicide fantasies, played out as a kind of twisted parlor game to mortify his mother, who's grown immune to her strange son's antics. Gradually, however, the film's clever humor shifts to a brighter outlook and finally arrives at a point where Harold is truly happy to be alive. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly won't appeal to all tastes (it was a box-office flop when first released), but if you're on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you've ever seen. --Jeff Shannon ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Dark Humor
Harold and Maude provides a wonderfully dark, ironic contrast between the angst of growing up and the celebration of growing old and embracing death. Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon put in excellent performances.

Even if the plot line doesn't appeal to you, the sound track for the movie--exclusively Cat Stevens--is stunning and makes this a must-hear movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever
This movie is my official screening device for future friends and lovers.I know many kind and wonderful people who could not appreciate this film, and god bless 'em.But if I want to know right away if there's any possibility of someone "getting" me or a deeper connection between myself and them, I ask them if they like this movie. If they haven't seen it, I lend it to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harold and Maude the Remake
I was in tenth grade when this movie came out and must have seen it 5 times. Of course, the soundtrack was incredible and made the movie and really turned me on to Cat Stevens. Fast forward to 2005 and if you are up to date with the times today (2/05) with all the remakes they are doing, this one also should me remade.
How about Jack White and Loretta Lynn. They showed they had good chemistry on her last album and I would love them to be the new Harold and Maude. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Dave Matthews Band is moving its music forward incrementally. While Before These Crowded Streets offers more of the folky melodies and vaguely international rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding subtle new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water"; banjo Bela Fleck steps in, too. Most intriguing, however, is the modernist string arrangement from the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthewsat least partly fulfills his obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band here; at the same time, Streets should keep his fans satisfied. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this was the summit
DMB became a #1 favorite band at one point for me, this album reached a new plateau in their unique style with such songs as crush me, beneath this dreaming tree, stone, and spoon which hasntbeen matched not even half ways with albums made before and ever since.....this album is truely a jem......

4-0 out of 5 stars No five but still great
This album took me a little time to get into but it was worth the wait. Most of the songs here are very good. A solid album overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I have nearly all of DMB's cds, and this one has stood the test of time. Though I love Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash, Before these Crowded Streets is the richest CD vocally and instrumentally. I love the African and Native American folk elements on this CD, and the range of songs. There's angry DMB with "Halloween," socially active DMB with "Don't Drink the Water," and then there's the fun, playful DMB with "Stay," that makes me think of the summer DMB concerts I've attended. These songs are great live, and this CD reminds of of DMB's better days. I haven't been a real fan of their latest cds, and when I listen to Before These Crowded Streets, I'm reminded how much I love this band. What I also like about this cd is that you can hear the fiddle, the banjo and the drums clearly on most of the tracks. Awesome cd! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whatever your need for this book...
...it will prove enormously helpful. It is great for tips on caring, feeding, watering, propogating and seasonal needs.
It is also helpful to identify plants, I'm sure we have all had the experience of getting a plant as a gift and not having a clue as to it's type, origin and care.
I used to be the well intentioned "Grim Reaper" of the houseplant world, after purchasing and studying this book I feel more like an Arch Angel nowadays!

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect general purpose house plant book
Other reviewers described the different book sections, so I won't.I love this book!I find the book perfect for the following uses:

    - I am sometimes given plants as gifts.I use the book to identify the plant, decide where to put it, and how to care for it.

    - I move frequently, and take plants with me if I can.The book helps me find the right spot for each plant in each new home, and helps me adapt the plant's care to the new environment.I re-read the book today to decide what kind of plants to put in which rooms of my next house.

    - The book describes how to coax blooms from holiday plants (eg. Christmas cactus, poinsettias)from year to year.

    - My husband has taken up cacti gardening. He used this book to get started.

This book is a general house plant book; it is not a huge scientific book detailing each individual plant species and subspecies. But it's just about right for what I need.

I am so impressed with this book, I'm planning to buy more from the author's series.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know in one concise volume.

    way to go jim henson!

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and delightful, but not the best Muppets movie
I grew up with the Muppets, and it's impossible not to love them. They still make me laugh (especially that Swiss chef), and what can you say about Kermit the Frog? He's a legend, pure and simple. The Muppets Take Manhattan is great fun, as the gang reunites to take on Broadway and become stars, but there just seems to be a little something missing here.Maybe it has something to do with the fact that all the players go their separate ways over the course of a big chunk of the film - I don't know. It's still a great movie that children of all ages should enjoy, but it's not my favorite Muppet film.Certainly, one thing in this movie's favor is the fact that, in 1984, Jim Henson was still alive and well, and his collaboration with Frank Oz makes this a vintage Muppets motion picture.

As the film opens, the Muppet gang are graduating from college, and the big show they put on for the school is such a hit that they decide to go to New York and take their show to Broadway. It is a decision that helps keep everyone together, but even Kermit the Frog has a hard time getting any Broadway producers to sign a show featuring song and dance performed by a frog, a pig, a dog, etc. When hope is all but lost, everyone decides to split up and live their own lives - they feel as if they have been unfair to Kermit by depending on him alone for so long.Kermit vows to stay and sell the show, and he can't way to get the gang back together.Luckily, Kermit has developed a friendship with a fashion design student/waitress and gets a job at a diner (which also features a funny and delightful little group of rats).Kermit's new three-phase plan to sell the show offers a lot of comedy but doesn't exactly pan out the way he would like. Then he has to make things right with a certain someone who has been stalking him.In the end, of course, everything works out for the best - but not before Kermit completely disappears for the two weeks leading up to opening night.

This film boasts a number of cameo appearances by well-known personalities: Dabney Coleman, Joan Rivers, Gregory Hines, Linda Lavin, Art Carney, Elliott Gould, Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, and many others (including a pre-Star Trek: The Next Generation Gates McFadden). Some extra special guests from a certain street everyone knows and loves also show up for the big finale. As always, the Muppets themselves steal the show, and there are some really comical scenes of physical humor as well as funny dialogue. You even get to see what the gang might have been like if they had all met as children.By all means, watch and enjoy The Muppets Take Manhattan, but I think there are better Muppets movies out there. ... Editorial Review

The founder of Windham Hill Records, Will Ackerman has stretched his sound occasionally with different instrumentation, but Hearing Voices is an entirely new approach. Picking up on his uncredited production of Samite's Stars to Share album, Ackerman enlists a group of singers that includes Samite, Happy Rhodes, Curtis King, and Heather Rankin to intone his quiet meditations, sometimes with English lyrics, other times with Native tongues and imaginary dialects. As a result, Hearing Voices has a hymnlike quality on tracks like "Somewhere in All This Green" and "Fear Not Mary." Rankin gets to do some ecstatic Gaelic chanting on "Walk with Me," which also features Ackerman's only electric guitar lead on record. Ackerman tosses in a couple of wistful acoustic guitar solos, but it's the vocal tunes that continue to haunt on this quietly daring departure.--John Diliberto ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Road Less Traveled
It is an affirmation of my over all opinion of Will Ackerman's work that, after something of an artistic hiatus, he can branch from instrumental music to song writing, and manage to capture a Grammy nomination with his efforts.I only recently realized that Ackerman is recording again, after a period of 10 years that saw only one new album. Now that I've listened to Hearing Voices, I can report that it is surprisingly compelling, while being quite a bit different than what I expected.

Why unexpected? From what I have seen of Ackerman's work I anticipated that the music would have strong folk overtones, similar to what he does as a soloist, and even in an ensemble. What I found is that, while he continues to use melody over a rhythmic chordal architecture, he has reduced the amount of arpegiation that marked his work and turned his focus to the intermingling of thematic voices. The catalog of languages that the performers use is extensive - Luganda, Gaelic, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Hindi, Sanscrit, English, and even invented.Obviously the intent isn't to produce an 'international' album, but to emphasize the importance of the sounds of the words aside from lyrics.

The result, however, is quite a bit different thant that of other musicians who have investigated this form (such as Vas and Wim Mertons). The selection presented is self-consistent - they play against each other smoothly, and it is very easy to approach this album as a work in its entirety rather than just a collection of works. As usual, Ackerman demonstrates his ability to get musicions to work together to create something that is more than a brilliant solo performance. That, coupled with the usual perfection we expect from Windham Hill productions, makes this one of the must have albums for those of use who like soft jazz and new age work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply --- great!!!
I have been a Will Ackerman for a few years now and when I saw this CD in the store, I snatched it up right away.It is definitely a departure from his previous work but still maintains the acoustic style that is defines his style. This CD has a prominent place in my collection and makes for some great driving music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ethereal voices blending with soulful guitar
Unlike most of the reviewers hear, I am new to William Ackerman's music, and this doubtlessly helped me appreciate this album because I didn't have anything to compare it with.

This is uplifting music, suitable for meditation, going to sleep by, or just sitting and imaging. The non-English lyrics serve to let the music and the sound speak for itself.

The voice of the guitar is quite distinguishable here, and is not drowned out or even diminished by the voices. There is a blending.

Nor is the music monotonous. Some is strictly Idyllic, but some has more of an upbeat. This isn't to say that it's envigorating, but it is deep and ultimately satisfying.

There are those who prefer Ackerman without voices, or only his own.But for those who enjoy an Enya type quality with expert guitar blending in, this is for you. ... Read more
