    Editorial Review

This handblender is a wonderfully convenient kitchen tool and will be used often in busy households. As a blender, it inserts into any bowl or pan or can be used with the included mixing beaker to swiftly purée soups or baby foods or blend the perfect cocktail. As a chopper, it minces a handful of parsley in 15 seconds and makes breadcrumbs from bread rolls in 30. Attach the wire whip to make whipped cream or meringues. For so many everyday tasks, this blender is a great choice--all the parts fit together well and work smoothly--and it is easily stored off the counter, on the included wall mount. --Maria Dolan ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kitchen Appliance I Own!
This is the best hand blender I have ever used!I bought this blender after reading the reviews and I have not been disappointed.I use it 2-3 times a day to mix my protein shakes with crushed ice and it has held up wonderfully. When the crushed iced function on my fridge temporarily went out, I had to use ice cubes and the blender didn't miss a beat.My husband loves to use it to puree soups and sauces.Because the bottom part is metal it can be used in hot liquids directly on the stovetop. If you need a good, reliable hand blender, spend the extra money for this one!You won't regret it!

It's great, works perfectly, but I need that hand mixer function. That's what's missing from it.

    Editorial Review

By now just about everybody whose interest in eating runs deeper than fast food knows about Alice Waters. The creator of Chez Panisse, the legendary restaurant in Berkeley, California, that helped create a modern American cuisine based on fresh ingredients, she is also equally well-known as a teacher and cookbook author. Chez Panisse Vegetables is one of the best new cookbooks of the season; it's as useful for its information about vegetables and how to use and handle them as it is for its irresistible recipes, which lead to complex and interesting dishes built from simple ingredients and simple techniques. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Vegetable Dishes, But Not the Best.
`Chez Panisse Vegetables' by Alice Waters is a book you will want to seriously consider for your library in general, and especially if you are very fond of cooking vegetable dishes. This is not to say this is the best book on the veggie bookshelf, as there are several, both vegetarian and non that are as good or better. The most similar volume is `Vegetables Every Day' by Jack Bishop which, like Waters' volume is organized by vegetable. And, in most easily measurable regards, Bishop's book is superior if you simply cannot have more than one veggie book on your shelves.

For starters, Bishop's book weights in at 388 pages for a list price of $30 while Ms. Waters has 336 pages for a list price of $35. Bishop covers 68 named vegetables in his table of contents while Waters covers only 44; however, some of her 44 chapters cover two similar veggies, as in the chapter on broccoli and broccoli raab. Yet, while Waters gives us five recipes on these two products, Bishop gives us eleven (11) recipes on broccoli and four recipes for broccoli raab.

Bishop also gives a lot more routine information on each vegetable. Every article, regardless of how many recipes may be given, has the same seven (7) paragraphs in the introductory article. The first paragraph simply introduces you to the vegetable and gives you a general idea of the appeal and usability of the vegetable. The next paragraph on availability gives the best season for the produce and whether or not the vegetable is currently available year round in American markets. The third paragraph on selection gives us criteria for whether we want to pick up today's selection of a species or let it alone. The paragraph on storage is especially useful, as there is probably very little wisdom handed down from your Eastern European grandma on storing tomatillos, taro, or jicama or from your Mexican mom on dealing with arugula, bok choy, or burdock. The basic preparation paragraph can be simple for leafy greens or very complicated for artichokes. The very short section on best cooking methods is primarily useful for totally unfamiliar vegetables. A very useful last entry gives recipes on other vegetables in which the titular ingredient appears.

But then, this review is about Waters' book, so let's get back to it. From the point of view of a book lover, there are a few things that recommend this book. First, like all of the Chez Panisse cookbooks, this one is very attractively illustrated in a vaguely French Art Nouveau style with what appear to be color pencil drawings for each vegetable. The table of contents also has the complete title of every recipe in the front of the book, which is a great help if you happen to be doing a quick search for a particular carrot or sweet potato recipe. Ms. Waters' volume also includes recipes for some vegetables not covered in Mr. Bishop's book such as Amaranth Greens, but Mr. Bishop returns the favor by covering several not highlighted by Ms. Waters.

Even though Ms. Waters dedicates more pages to mushrooms than does Mr. Bishop, Bishop offers fourteen (14) mushroom recipes to Ms. Waters twelve (12). And, Mr. Bishop tends to give more basic and more traditional recipes. Among his mushroom recipes, for example, he has a recipe for duxelles and for duxelles with scrambled eggs. Bishop also includes more recipes that include meat; but neither book should be considered a vegan or vegetarian book, as both make heavy use of dairy products in their recipes.

The two most positive things I can say about Ms. Waters book are that there is very little overlap of recipes between her book and Mr. Bishop's book and her comments are much more fun to read between commercials while watching Rachael Ray or Alton Brown on the Food Network. The introductory text is less formal, but more interesting.

While I have had Ms. Waters' book longer than I have had Mr. Bishop's volume, I still go to Chez Panisse first over all my other vegetable books, as Waters' recipes are simple, elegant, and very well explained. I go to Bishop second if I can't find anything that appeals to me from Miss Alice.

If you can, get both of these books over any other vegetable cookbook I have seen (although I have certainly not seen all). But do not get them if you need strictly vegetarian recipes. For those, see Deborah Madison's books, `The Modern Vegetarian Kitchen' by Peter Berley, or Crescent Dragonwagon's encyclopedic `Passionate Vegetarian'.

Highly recommended for foodies and cookbook collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Waters is a great cookbook author
She has such an unassuming style and such a great depth of knowlege of her subject that I essentially read the entire thing in a couple of evenings to my great joy and enlightenment.
I have a bunch of canning/preserving books, but Alices pickle recipe is so simple, easy to follow and tasty, that I always use it now.I also have Green on Greens which is an earlier and very similar book.I like it, and it has more recipes, but Chez Panisse Vegetables is more interesting and the recipes are always a hit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
I bought this book right before Thanksgiving. It IS great. The recipes are well written and the drawings add a playful touch. But the best is the pumpkin soup recipe. It's so easy to make. I made it for my family and all you could hear were the spoons clinking against the bottom of the bowl, and everyone asked for seconds. It was more of a hit than the turkey. ... Read more

This electric crêpe maker is a bit like a frying pan turned inside out. Instead of a pan shape, it looks a bit like a banjo, and the top is a convex, nonstick cooking surface. Preheat, then dip it directly into the batter, rotate it right side up, and wait until the ready light turns on. Then just flip it back over to drop the cooked crêpe onto a plate and fill with the delicacy of your choice. Each crêpe takes just under a minute to cook, so you can serve as many as your guests can eat without spending the whole meal hovering in the kitchen. A short recipe booklet ranging from pigs in blankets to blintzes is included. --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best $20 I've ever spent!
Ordered this from Amazon, and it is a fantastic machine. Beautiful thin crepes every time. It comes with a basic recipe book, and we used the exact recipe last night. Today I tried the recipe without the butter added because we're on a diet, and the crepes didn't slide off as well. If you're ona low fat diet, I suggest using a little bit of PAM on the surface, and wiping with a paper towel between each crepe. The other thing is we like our crepes a little more crispy, so we turned each over for 2 seconds. Didn't take long at all to get a batch ready. By the way - don't pay extra for the other machine that comes with a dipping tray, just use a regular glass pie dish - easy. This one is so easy to clean too! We love it. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING LITTLE HELPER!!!!
I just purchased this crepe maker to make crepe manicotti for Easter.I had NO idea just how simple and easy it would be!!I kept putting it off thinking it would be a major project and very complicated.....JUST THE OPPOSITE!Making one crepe takes about 3 seconds....just dip the top of the crepe pan into the batter (which is in a pie tin), let it sit and "cook", when the ready light goes on, just turn the crepe maker over and your newly cooked crepe just falls off onto a plate! Each crepe is super thin and perfect. And the amazing part is that when you stack the crepes on top of each other, they don't stick to oneanother!!There is a recipe book included and it is great.Very simple and quick recipes. My manicotti was the hit at Easter dinner!!You have to buy this product!I can't wait to make more dishes!!

    Editorial Review

This smaller version of George Foreman's famous "as seen on TV" Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine is perfect for preparing quick, low-fat meals for one or two people. The double-sided grill surface heats in less than five minutes to an even temperature perfect for grilling most foods. The high grill grooves and slight angle allow fat to run off the grill as food cooks, and the nonstick surface requires little or no additional fat for cooking. The plastic, grooved spatula works well to scrape off any bits that may have stuck to the surface.

Meats and fish are the obvious choices to take advantage of the Grilling Machine's fat-reduced grilling, but vegetables and tofu dogs work well too. The double-sided grill means food cooks twice as fast, leaves attractive grill marks, and generates surprisingly little smoke. --Julija Gelazis ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this - buy a convection oven
I agree completely with Mr. Charles Tsen.Every thing he has written about this grill is right.I had the misfortune of buying this after reading all the hype about this useless appliance.I bougth it more than a year ago and promised myself that i would never use it again. It is ridiculosuly difficult to clean and you simply will never get the desired results. For all those people looking to get a great fat reducing machine, I would recommend that they should consider "Nesco American Harvest JS-4000TE Jet Stream Oven" from Amazon or any other site.I have been using this convection oven for the past 6-7 years and am extremely satisfied. One tip in prolonging the life of this convection oven is to use a fresh paper towel on the tray to absorb all the fat before using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This grill is a Champ
Quick heat up means a quick meal. As a busy single,I find that I can put a potato in the microwave, plug in the grill, preheat, put the meat on the grill and be ready by the time the potato is cooked and a vegetable is put together.Clean up is simple thanks to the nonstick coating. I cook everything, including eggplant on this grill. It is a definite necessity in my kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Foreman where have you been all my life??
This is such an awesome little piece of kit and have recommended it to so many people! My five star review i guess also takes into condideration the price we paid. We go this when it was reduced to $14.99 and I doubt that, pound for pound, you could get a better kitchen gadget for that price.

As I had previously seen this on tv infomercials I was a little sceptical as I always am of these "gadgets", but this really has changed our kitchen lives. It heats up so fast and cooks very quickly and evenly (due to it cooking both sides at once). We really love the speed - its great to know that in four/five minutes you can have a perfect tuna-stek or porkchop without having to fire up the oven. It also frees up the oven to cook other things for your meal.

Its just big enough to cook two chicken breasts or two burgers, a porkchop or steak. But it can also be used for sausage links, bacon, vegetables and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Some people have mentioned they have real problems cleaning it up. Whilst yes it could be better but you literally just scrape off any excess and wipe it down. If you dont want to have to do that then you need to buy the one with removable plates but it would have cost us three times as much.

Be warned thought that the fat-collecting drip tray shouldnt be put in the dishwasher - we did and it melted part of it. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

With Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres Handbook, Stewart, along with Martha Stewart Living food editor Susan Spungen and photographer Dana Gallagher, has created not just a handbook but a dream book. The first 225 pages consist entirely of beautifully photographed, exquisite nibbles, tastes, and bites--and the following 270 pages give you the recipes and instructions to re-create them at home. Pink and orange ribbons bound into the book allow you to easily mark photos and recipes. Only Martha and her staff would come up with something so beautiful and practical.

You can browse the photos for inspiration, or dive right into one of the chapters, all organized by presentation, such as "Layered and Stacked"; "Wrapped, Rolled, Filled, Folded and Stuffed"; "Skewered and Threaded"; "Bites and Pieces"; and "Sips and Drinks," just to name a few. Having a few friends over for cocktails before the show? How about Crispy Asparagus Straws, a delicious combo of asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and phyllo and sprinkled with Parmesan? The sophisticated flavors belie the ease of preparation. Have a little more time to prepare? The Jicama and Green Papaya Summer Rolls with Peanut Dipping Sauce are tasty and beautiful.

As gorgeous as this cookbook is, don't dismiss it as coffee-table cooking--several helpful photos show technique as well as finished product, and Martha's tips and notes are sprinkled throughout the text. For example, a lengthy sidebar on purchasing and preparing shrimp shares how to buy shrimp (the high quality of flash-frozen shrimp these days makes it perfectly acceptable), how to cook it (use kosher salt in your cooking water), and how best to peel and devein the little treasures. Similarly, reading the note on preparing phyllo will encourage even a novice cook to try her hand at Phyllo Triangles with Feta and Spinach or Curried Walnut Chicken. 5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate hors d'oeuvres cookbook
Whether you're planning a Super Bowl party, a bridal shower, or a cocktail party, this book has numerous beautiful and delicious possibilities for entertaining.I've used it for a huge variety of events, unfailingly with incredible results.I love that EVERY recipe has a beautiful photo, so you can think about presentation possibilities.A couple of the recipes have proven more time-intensive than I expected, but those are balanced by the ones that have had a huge "wow" factor with almost no effort. You just have to experiment to find out which is which.

4-0 out of 5 stars I always refer to this book for inspiration
I cook from scratch and cook daily and thought this book was an excellent reference when planning a get together for family or friends. Many of the recipes are colorful, healthy, offer texture and are tasty. These recipes can easily be co-ordinated with any menu and many can be used as an appetizer course. This book took much time to produce with pictures and presentation ideas for every recipe. I save all of my food magazines and am lucky to get 3 -4 usable recipes. [...]This book has received way too much hype. I thought it was very basic and had very few good recipes that were new or creative.

A good chef's knife becomes a daily kitchen companion. It's used for everything from prepping steaks for the grill to finely mincing onions, and chances are you'll reach for it every time you cook--so it better be good. This knife's attractive red-toned wood handle is chunky but comfortable, and lasts just as long as standard polypropylene--as with all Sabatier knives, hand washing is necessary. Its 10-inch blade length is extremely versatile--from halving a watermelon to chopping multiple carrots at a time, it makes short work of your prepping. It's length makes it tricky for many cooks to use for small work such as mincing onions, while others may prefer the strength and balance of its longer blade for all their kitchen chores. --Jill Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A functional beauty
This is the prettiest and most prized knife in my kitchen. When I use it I feel like Julia Child, slicing and chopping with great verve. The balance is great; it's long enough to really get a job done; the handle has enough room to not bump knuckles; but the rosewood handle also makes it stand out visually from the black ones so common today. It's just plain pretty.Hand washing is no trouble; it's like caring for any other fine possession. I consider it a great value and will definitely consider buying others in this line.

4-0 out of 5 stars In fact, the knife is made in France.
The CA reviewer is wrong. This knife is French-made, not Chinese. I know, I own one. I used to be a chef and this knife compares favorably to Wusthof. Nice balance and comparable edge to any other high carbon stainless knife I've used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Chef's Knife!!
I am a confessed knife-a-holic and have more knives than well equipped Boy Scout troop on a camping trip.My criteria for a great chef's knife is that it be well balanced and comfortable, and have enough curvature in the blade to be able to chop/cut on the cutting board without having the tip dig into the board. Some chefs knives, such as the Henkels have a very pointed blade, which tend to dig into the cutting board. Theblades I like best are from Sabatier and Wustoff. The Sabatier isa real winner. It is very well balanced and has an ideal blade shape that will handle all kinds of tasks. It can be used for fine work (like dicing onions) to anything that might be expected of a 10" knife. The only oddity, if you will, is the handle. It is a beautiful resin impregnated piece of wood, but the bottom side is flat, rather than rounded. At first it felt a little strange, but I soon began to get used to the feel and found that it added a measure of control to the knife. Maybe I am rationalizing, but I find the handle a real joy to use. If you want a more traditional handle, get the polyproprolene one. It is very comfortable. Either one that you chose, you will have a real winner. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Millennium, arguably the best vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco, finally shares its secrets. If you've never been to Millennium, forget the stereotype of a vegetarian restaurant serving bean sprouts, brown rice, and seaweed. Millennium, a true gourmet restaurant, presents elegant, innovative, inspired cuisine that happens to be as healthy as it is delicious. This book entices the accomplished cook to explore exquisite dishes that will surprise and delight any dinner party--even if your guests are not vegetarians. Try appetizers like Cabbage and Shiitake-Filled Spring Rolls with Plum Sauce, or Grilled Portobellos with Herb-Tofu Aioli and Red Onion Marmalade. Experience the Indian-inspired Baked Madras-Glazed Tofu with Saffron Basmati Pilaf and Peach-Lime Chutney, or the Curry-Crusted Tempeh with Pomegranate Sauce. You won't want to skip dessert: Chocolate-Almond Midnight will indulge even the most finicky chocoholic.

Some of the dishes are simple to prepare, but most are intricate and time consuming and include subrecipes, making this book best for artistic cooks who revel in new, inventive recipes. For example, the recipe for luscious Moroccan Filo Crescents with Curried Golden Tomato Sauce (only 21 percent fat, despite the filo) takes more than a page, and references three other recipes. All recipes are vegan--no meat, eggs, or dairy--and most are very low in fat. Nutritional breakdown is provided for each recipe, and the food photos are gorgeous. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best vegan cookbook ever!
I have owned this cookbook for a number of years now and have yet to make anything I didn't absolutely love. Don't be daunted by these recipes with lots of ingredients, some are much less time-consuming than they look.

These are far from hum-drum recipes - the chefs at Millennium are very daring with their ingredient combinations and when cooking from this book you end up with wonderful meals that are full of very complex and rich flavours.

This is a book for the adventurous cook - those who like typical table fare may find this book too much of a stretch. However, those who are looking for high quality vegan/vegetarian dining will find that they have to look no further.

Bought the book a couple of years ago by chance and have so far tried more than 20 recipes, every one of them was a hit. I got a lot of new cooking ideas from the book. For any tofu-haters, they would never guess the Chocolate-Almond midnight you made was mostly tofu! Some of the recipes are indeed quite complex, it took me two days to prepare the Indonesian Rice Tamales with Carrot-Lemongrass Sauce for a gathering but it was quite worthy. Editorial Review

Since its 1991 publication, Viana La Place's Verdura has become a classic. And with good reason: Its 300 accessible recipes represent the best of the Italian approach to vegetable preparation, an earthy yet spirited technique that celebrates fresh ingredients simply treated. Many readers have made the book their vegetable cooking bible; those who have not yet added it to their kitchen libraries will want to do so. Contending that eating well-prepared vegetables helps us to appreciate life's natural cycles, La Place presents recipes for antipastos, salads, soups, sandwiches, pasta, risottos, pizzas, and more. The vegetables she explores run the gamut from the familiar--artichokes, eggplant, radicchio--to the more exotic, such as chayote, cardoons, and brocciflower. 5-0 out of 5 stars Rave Reviews for Fundraiser Menu
I received this book as a gift from my father because I kept checking it out from the library. This past weekend I used the Risotto with Swiss Chard and Winter Herbs as a stuffing for winter squash and Rapini with Garlic Bread Crumbs as the main course for a fund-raising dinner for 60 at my daughter's high school. The diners absolutely raved about it!The recipes are simple and straightforward and sooooooooooo good. It's one of my favorite cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of delicious inspiration
The best book on vegetable cooking I have ever owned, am on to my third copy. All dishes are easy and delicious, her relaxed
approach to food is one we should all embrace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!
I am a huge fan of Viana La Place, I have several of her books...Verdura is another fantastic addition to the foodie's library. I have prepared a number of the recipes in this book and they have all been winners. Her descriptions are spot on, and her cooking advice is always appreciated. I'm a little annoyed to see people complaining about this not being a "true vegetarian" cookbook. Guess what, folks, it's not supposed to be! ... Read more

OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer
Average Customer Review: 2.5 out of 5 stars

    Editorial Review

Great for hard and even semihard cheeses, this wire cheese slicer by Oxo cuts cheese thinner than knives can and without the added pressure on your hands. The stainless-steel wire ensures a thin slice, and the solid zinc construction is quite durable. The soft rubber nonslip handle absorbs the pressure slicing puts on your hands. It's perfect for placing next to the cheese board at your next party. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Broke after about ten uses
The first couple of times I used this cheese slicer, the wire stretched out, making the slices thicker than they're supposed to be.Today I finally cut through a hard hunk of sharp cheddar and POP - the wire broke. For $20, I expect more.Next time I'll buy a non-wire cheese slicer.VERY disappointed as I expect more of OXO.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go witht the traditional "cheese plane" type
Like in the other reviews, the wire broke after only a few uses. I just emailed OXO and asked for a replacement. I hope they honor the satisfaction garantee!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fine while it worked
It does the job while it works.. then the wire went slack and finally broke, like everyone else. I could call and get a replacement but do I want to bother? Perhaps I'll get a replacement and give it away as a gift to someone who will never use it. It does look very nice. Anyone have a recommendation for an alternative product? ... Read more

Been itching to try out quinoa and amaranth, food of the Incangods, or to reach back to pharaonic Egypt and beyond for the taste ofspelt, progenitor of modern wheat? If so, Marlene Bumgarner's NewBook of Whole Grains is the place to start. This is life at thebottom of the food pyramid, that glorious culinary domicile where allresidents are allowed to eat all they want of whatever's on the shelf--whenever they want to eat it. Bumgarner encourages this behavior with200 recipes, organized by grain, that utilize whole grains as sidedishes, main courses, breads, desserts, and breakfast foods. Firstpublished in 1976, Bumgarner's whole-grains cookbook has withstood thetest of time . The author has returned to her original material andupdated recipes to reflect new ideas about salt and fat content, andshe addresses the differences in the average household's available timethat have cropped up in the last 20 years. You might think that wholegrains take too long to bother with, but they can help you move yourdiet and cooking in a healthy, friendly direction. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Vegetarian Cookbook
I just got this cookbook.I am a vegetarian and thought that this would be a good book to use.I haven't tried any of the recipes, but in purusing it , it is very evident that it is not a book writen for vegetarians.

5-0 out of 5 stars great cookbook
I have been trying to cook using more whole foods and this cookbook is one of the best. It has great recipes and is a good read too. I bought another for my mother and she enjoys it as well. The oat flour pancakes and whole wheat soft pretzels are ones I make all the time. The whole wheat bagels were great. I have tried 2-3 dozen recipes so far and they are all great. I would also recommend "366 delicious ways to cook rice, beans and grains" by Andrea Chesman. I give it 5 stars as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but something's missing...
I just got this book, looked it over and am really excited about it.Very unique recipes that I haven't seen anywhere. However, I was discouraged in one recipe, "Brown Rice Risotto," because it tells you to "dissolve yeast," but there's no yeast listed in the list of ingredients.I'm assuming I found the only recipe with a problem. All in all, I can't wait to make the recipes! ... With a powerful fan to circulate air, this exceptionally compact toaster oven offers the option of convection as well as conventional baking and roasting, and it also toasts, broils, and rewarms. For roasting and baking, the 1,500-watt toaster oven heats up to 415 degrees and has a broiler setting. A separate set of controls adjusts for toasting. Included with the toaster oven is a baking/broiling pan, an extra removable wire rack for two-tier cooking so a full family meal can be prepared at one time, and two cookie sheets. Recipes offering examples of the toaster oven's full versatility are also included. Though roomy enough inside for six slices of toast, the toaster oven measures only 17 inches wide, 8 inches high, and 12 inches deep overall. It provides continuous self-cleaning and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good but not great
This model toasts well, bakes well, and the convection feature is a plus. However... the insulation is poor so the oven gets hot to the touch. Also, for the price, the construction feels flimsy. It is however a very good performer. Could be 4-5 stars with better heat insulation.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent convection toaster oven
I didn't think that with the low price and free shipping I would get the best kitchen appliance I have ever purchased. I had shopped around and found this convection oven at twice the price. It is easy to use, convenient, and performs exceptionally well.

This professional mandoline slicer for slicing and shredding potatoes and other vegetables comes with everything you need: a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, a plastic storage lid, four interchangeable cutting blade cartridges, and a cutting slide with a safety guard. Just slide in the cartridge you need--thin slice, thick slice, julienne (1/8-inch), or french-fry cutter (1/4-inch)--press the safety guard with sharp prongs onto the end of the vegetable, and slice away. The safety guard rests on side rails over the blade so your hand can't slip, and the entire cutting slide apparatus snaps onto the top of the bowl. The stainless-steel bowl has four rubber grippers underneath so it won't slide while you're slicing. Pop the plastic storage lid on top and put leftovers in the fridge. Every part of the mandoline slicer, including the cutting blades, is dishwasher-safe. Lifetime limited warranty. --Doree Armstrong ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's simple mechanics, folks
I bought this item about 2 years ago and use it mostly for slicing potatoes and making cole slaw.It is very easy to use, and despite what you may have read from others, it is easy to remove the blades as well.I understand the problem well.If you grasp the edge of the blade without really paying attention to how it is designed, the tendency is to pull down a bit. This puts pressure on the small piece of plastic that is designed to lock the blade in place, thus causing you to fight against the "lock". If you pull the blade slightly upward and out, it slides out very easily. For that matter, straight out works, too. It may not be fancy, but for my needs, it works great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this item!!!
We received this mandoline as a Christmas gift, so we cannot return it without risking hurt feelings. It is cheaply made, has few cutting options, and worst of all, the blades are extremely hard to remove, resulting in a badly cut finger!

Hoffritz is apparently out of business (Salten has a license to sell some of their products, but not this one), and I can see why.

4-0 out of 5 stars First mandolin I ever had; I like it

This giant-size cutting board is awesome for all your fruit, vegetable, and pastry needs. Its hefty 23-1/2-inch length allows it to fit comfortably over the top of a sink, while the 3-inch-wide drain lets you quickly dispose of extra liquid or damaged lettuce leaves. As wood is porous, you shouldn't use it for raw meat--or place a plastic cutting mat on top of the board before you do. For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the Casual Cook
I never thought I'd ever use something like this. It just seemed, well, too fussy! However after watching Rachael Ray use one over and over on her show, I thought I'd give it a try. The price was definitely right!I must say, I don't know how I ever got along without it.It's perfect for grating chocolate and hard cheeses, and absolutely essential for zesting lemons and limes (what a difference fresh zest makes in a recipe!) without getting ANY of the bitter pith.I'm getting one for my mom and my best friend...I just love this kitchen tool!Don't think you have to be a gourmet to have use for this. Even the casual cook will find it indispensable!

Along with a chef's knife, a small, serrated utility knife becomes a regular kitchen companion, especially in the summer, when there's a bounty of fresh tomatoes, peaches, and other juicy fruits and vegetables. Perfect for slicing without squashing, its sharp-edged serrations slice right through soft breads as well--it's perfect for biscuits or English muffins. While the manufacturer suggests use with bagels, we didn't find the knife large enough to make it a practical choice for such chewy bread. The chunky wood-laminate handle is attractive and comfortable and, like all Sabatier knives, requires hand washing. I bought this knife several years ago (mine has a different handle but otherwise the same) as a starving college student. My mom started me on these knives and I won't use anything else.It is labelled as a tomato/bagel knife but it's more useful than that. It's fabulous on a wide variety of vegetables when you're not looking to mince.I use it to slice up bell peppers, half celery stalks, shred lettuce (and get that hard knot out of the base) and of course tomatoes.Mine is 4 years old and as sharp as the day I bought it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars much better book than Enter the Zone
If you are a vegan, vegetarian, or just a person looking to add more soy into your diet because of the health benefits you've heard about--oh yeah, and you're interested in the Zone way of eating--get this book. One more thing--bypass Sears' frist book "Enter the Zone."First of all, "Enter the Zone" is only offerred in hardback...uh, it's been out for amost 10 years now, so I think a paperback is warranted.Much of "Enter the Zone" is about how fabulous Barry Sears is and how his diet has worked for all these olympic level atheletes--great!But certainly not me."The Soy Zone," on the other hand, includes all of the important information from "Enter the Zone," including how to calculate your lean body mass in order to figure out your protein needs, and once you've got that, you can figure out how many blocks of protein you need to consume--the basis of the Zone diet."The Soy Zone" also goes into detail about how the Zone works by regulating insulin and glucagon levels, and everything else you'd need to know--without the self-aggrandizing.And it's in paperback!Wahoo! The recipes offer an easy way to add soy into your diet if you are not a vegetarian/vegan, and if you are a vegetarian/vegan, the recipes show you how to beef up (er, soy up) the amount of protein in your food.

2-0 out of 5 stars A poor effort
This book is useful in that it gives low carbohydrate vegetarian recipes.Annoyingly, however, it also doesn't explain very well how the zone diet works-- I don't think it ever tells you what a zone block is, for example, you will have to get the regular zone book to find out.Of course the author wants you to buy his other books, but it seems inappropriate not to include the basic information of what a zone block is in the book.

Worse yet, some of the recipes obviously have incorrect quantities. For example, in order to make "savory lentils with goat cheese" work out as a single serving of a four zone block entree the way it was supposed to, I had to cut the goat cheese in half, and the lentils by about 1/3 of a cup. (The recipe is also unclear on whether the lentils are measured raw or cooked.Cook first, then measure.)Given the mechanics of the zone diet, this is a fatal flaw.If I wanted to fiddle around checking recipes and adjusting them to fit the "zone," I would do it with a regular vegetarian cookbook, I wouldn't have bought this one.

These bowls are nice. Perfect for soup, dessert, salad, or whatever. Well, I like big salads, so they're a little small for MY salads. But they're great for a lot of things, and I SWEAR you could drop them on the floor and they probably wouldn't break. They fit nicely on the small Fiestaware plates so you don't spill a full bowl of soup. They go in the fridge to store leftovers, in the dishwasher (I've washed these things hundreds of times and they're still in great shape), and probably in the freezer, too. If only Fiestaware would make tupperware-like lids so I'd feel more comfortable putting these in the freezer for storing things. As they are, I have to use plastic wrap, which always lets in yucky freezer smells.

Washing and drying leafy vegetables has never been simpler or more fun than with this gadget. One hand is all you need to press the soft, cushioned knob to start the spinning; when the built-in brake is applied and the job is done, the basket and bowl can be taken apart and used separately. The knob locks down for easy storage, and the spinner is dishwasher-safe. Use this tool with lettuce, raw spinach, broad-leafed herbs, and greens--they end up clean and oh-so-dry, and the drier your leaves, the better salad dressings will adhere and the less mushy your sandwich bread will become. 2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay...
I'm still looking for the perfect salad spinner. I had this one and broke it after trying to take the lid apart to try to clean under the lid--don't attempt that! I didn't like how this one had a domed lid so you couldn't stack stuff on top of it. I also found that the interior of the basket wasnt smooth but a bumpy basket weave so little bits of lettuce get stuck in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great until it broke
This was a wonderful salad spinner for the several months it worked. Then it broke. In my kitchen, very few things break. The occasional wooden spatula after fifteen years of use is fine but things tend not to break unless I drop them. This is my second Oxo product that broke while I was using it (the other one was a knife--yes, a knife snapped in two while I was cutting).I still love my Oxo peeler but with two out of three of my Oxo products breaking, I'm done with Oxo for the most part.

1-0 out of 5 stars worked well until it exploded
I bought this item and used it for about 2 months, then It exploded while I was spinning a salad and was impossible to repair. I went on to buy a Tupperware salad spinner (green) and have been using it for four years with no problems at all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mounted properly, it will hold pots
Furthering the debate on the applications of the hanging tool rack..

Mounted properly to a secure point, the hanging rack can hold pots and pans without a problem. The weakest possible point on this structure will be the fastening points of the rack to the wall.

The hooks are stronger than pretty much anything that can be screwed in to the holes. The strength of the rack itself couldnt possibly be in question, its made of 18/10 stainless steel, you would need 100's of lbs of force to bend it.The rack is easily capable of holding pots and pans on every hook that weigh 10+ pounds.Maybe it was not designed to hang items as wide as a pan but this does not mean you cant buy 4 racks and still do it, they are very good looking.

Just because its called a "Hanging Tool Rack" doesnt mean you cant hang on it anything that can be hooked, everything you buy has a suggested use.Buy it and do what you like, bolt it to the wall in the garage and hang hammers on it, wont hurt my feelings!

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT A POT HANGER!
Despit what another reviewer says of this product--it is NOT a pot hanger--it is a TOOL (fork, spoons, whisk, turner, etc) HANGER.It has six hooks for tools--you can get more directly from ALL CLAD ($5 for 4 additional hooks). The finish on the rack is pure ALL CLAD, first rate. However, the finish on the hooks is not quite up to par. But do not let that stop: with tools on it you cannot see the hooks. While it is great for hanging the teriffic ALL CLAD tools, don't even think about hanging pots/pans on it-that is NOT what it is designed for.

5-0 out of 5 stars BINGO!No more falling pots and pans!
I have looked all over for a hanging pot rack that had the hooks somehow attached to it, so they wouldn't keep falling off.Well, only Amazon.com had it!!! BINGO -- EXACTLY what I was looking for.I wasn't for sure if it was going to fit the space I had for it, but ordered two, and it's going to work well in my kitchen.I like that is all-clad stainless steel and dishwasher safe, just for me to keep it looking nice.If you're tired of pots falling on you, this is the item to get.The hooks actually have a hole at the top so you slide the hook onto the rack and the design of the rack holds it away from the wall. What a FIND!I can't believe after all this time I found what I was looking for!Thank you Amazon.I couldn't be happier with my purchase, except I think I need to order just one more. :) After all I have a lot of pots and pans to hang!:) ...
