5-0 out of 5 stars Merry and Bright !
This little volume only 61/2" x 7" is a perfect gift for you to give to some harried person you love that has been scurrying around, shopping, baking, cooking, cleaning, wrapping and decorating to make the holidays wonderful.I suggest you put it on a tray with some hot cocoa (with a candy cane in it) and a couple of those Christmas cookies and serve it up with a kiss BEFORE Christmas Eve. It contains 33 colorful and very funny and endearing paintings of charming animals in zany holiday motiff. You'll love them all but my favorite is a big Polar Bear expectantly puckered up beneath the mistletoe, and I know you'll chuckle when you see the walrus in his Santa suit. The only text is a witty caption beneath each picture so there's no "work" to enjoying this book.Maybe throw in a pair of warm slippers when you give this book and stick around to share the smiles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Little Charmer
This charming little volume is only 5 1/4' x 5 1/4" and would certainly fit into a stocking but I suggest you make a treat of it before Christmas. It is illustrated with vintage Victorian images filled with the innocence and magic of Christmas. It contains two Christmas stories from The Bible, the chapter from "The Birds' Christmas Carol" where baby Carol gets her name, a chapter from "Little Women", the famous "Yes, Virginia There Is a Santa Claus" letter, some Charles Dickens Christmas NOT from "A Christmas Carol", Eleanor Roosevelt's memory of Christmas, and Hans Christian Andersen's "The Last Dream of the Old Oak Tree". Best of all is an excerpt from O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi."The excerpts will hopefully whet your appetite for the complete versions of the stories. The scope of this tiny book is just to "taste" a sample.
The recipes are DELISH! The Egg Nog and the Crispy Gingerbread Cookies are especially fine.My favorite is Red and White Peppermint Cake. There are so many good things packed in this little book that it must have a bit of the same magic that Santa's toy-sack has! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing a Song of Christmas
This brightly colored little book just 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" is a fun way to share a bit of Christmas anticipation each night in the weeks preceding Christmas. You can easily tuck your little ones in with a poem or carol from this charming book. Help build the excitement and understanding of Christmas with the quaint and touching Victorian illustrations that grace every page. All 19 of the poems are wonderful nostalgic evocations of the spirit of Christmas and include the works of many greats like Tennyson, de la Mare, Shakespeare, Frost, Longfellow, Poe, Rossetti, Masefield and Grahame, among others. The 18 carols are among the most beloved the world has ever known and will be familiar and fun for you to share. Lewis Carol's poem "Christmas Greeting From a Fairy to a Child" has an illustration of a lovely fairy with a star upon her brow and a long, sweeping dress lighting the candles on the Christmas tree with her sparkling wand. See a lively illustration of folks bundled with a cozy lap robe and wearing their muffs and fur collars out in the sleigh, the bob-tail horse pulling them jauntily past a frozen pond where ice-skaters glide, their cheeks and smiles aglow! You will have the treat of enjoying the other two verses of Jingle Bells when you may have only known one before. This is a really dear book and will make a lovely part of any Christmas tradition. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much new here
This is a nice book if you still need a collection of the basic popular Christmas stories & songs. It's put together nicely, but there wasn't much new or unique in the book, except a couple of poems. There were some nice illustrations, but the book wasn't worth it just for those. So if you are looking for something new, not just the same old Christmas stories, don't get this book. But if you want all those in one place this is a good choice.I also found it a bit hard to read for long periods since it's small, but very thick.Handling it & keeping it open to read was tiresome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Christmas present - and order an extra for yourself
Nostalgic, fun Christmas presents come no better. The assortment of stories, music, and pictures contained in this book cover a huge scope. It is just the sort of book to snuggle with as one nurses a toddy and enjoys the scent of pine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Treasure Trove
I love all of Lena Tabori's "Little Big Books", especially the Valentines and Halloween ones, but this Christmas one is my favorite of all. This book is a "must have" for reading to children during the Yuletide season and is a wonderful (and necessary) indulgence for oneself as well. The illustrations have been gleaned from the charming Victorian art of a bygone day and archive the simple, cozy Christmas traditions for us to recover with the turn of a page. 11 Poems, 13 carols with music, 21 stories, 14 recipes, and over 200 illustrations including 55 full color 19th century images make up this delightful volume. You will see the writing of Robert Frost, Louisa May Alcott, Kenneth Grahame, O. Henry, Ogden Nash, William Shakespeare and many others. Read stories from the Bible and also from the pen of beloved First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
I think this book would be worth having for the holiday recipes alone. I have tried several and I found each one that I tried delicious. There are blueprints for a gingerbread house and perfect Snow Icing directions. Don't miss the Vermont Whiskey Cake or Napa Valley Apple Cranberry Crisp.
Open up this treasure trove after all the Thanksgiving dishes are done and take a treasure or two out each day.I think you'll enjoy the whole season that much more as a result! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

John Grisham turns a satirical eye on the overblown ritual of the festive holiday season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25. Grisham's story revolves around a typical middle-aged American couple, Luther and Nora Krank. On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving they wave their daughter Blair off to Peru to work for the Peace Corps, and they suddenly realize that "for the first time in her young and sheltered life Blair would spend Christmas away from home."

Luther Krank sees his daughter's Christmas absence as an opportunity. He estimates that "a year earlier, the Luther Krank family had spent $6,100 on Christmas," and have "precious little to show for it." So he makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that "we won't do Christmas." Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank's subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision.

Grisham builds up a funny but increasingly terrifying picture of how thistight-knit community turns on the Kranks, who find themselves under increasing pressure to conform. As the tension mounts, readers may wonder whether they will manage to board their plane on Christmas day. Skipping Christmas is Grisham-lite, with none of the serious action or drama of his legal thrillers, but a funny poke at the craziness of Christmas. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and heartwarming a christmas classic
I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. i shows how the holiday season is way to much comercialized. It is very funny and it's very heartwarming. It's fun to read what the characters are doing becouse it's so true we would be doing the same as them if we were in the same situation. A christmas classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars A satire or a Christmas carol?
Luther and Nora Krank have seen it all happen too many times before: the ridiculous frenzy and overblown ritual of celebrating Christmas. This year it is definitely going to change: the Kranks are going to skip Christmas. But as easy it was to enter a travel agency and book a Caribbean cruise on the luxurious Island Princess instead, so difficult it becomes to withstand the moral pressure their neighbours on Hemlock Street are putting on them to keep the Christmas spirit alive. But Luther is determined to go ahead with his crazy idea, no matter what it takes.

With Skipping Christmas John Grisham is again trying out something completely different. Where he already diverted from his proven concept of legal thrillers to socially engaged drama with A Painted House, he now tries to expand his craft by writing a satirical novel. And a fine job he did, indeed. Skipping Christmas has turned out to be a well composed and warm fairytale that comes with quite some funny episodes. Don't expect anything as hilarious as the books of Terry Pratchett, to name but one, but for example Luther's quest to put a Frosty on his roof will sure cause some smiles.

Nevertheless what did disturb me is the topic addressed in this book. The first part of the novel gives a frightening view on a society that has made the commercially driven rituals of Christmas into a religion on its own. While reading the book it becomes clear that in the world depicted by Grisham escaping the Christmas frenzy is almost impossible. I silently hope that this is more fiction than reality, but you never know for sure. The funny part is that the ending is in complete contrast to the tone that was set in the beginning of the book. Now I do wonder if this venomous twist was introduced with just a commercial purpose. If not then this makes Skipping Christmas a wonderful masterpiece of satire that in the end makes fun of itself.

Actually, there are definitely two ways of reading this book: as a satire or as a Christmas carol. You decide. But your choice reveals a lot of who you are... beware!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Man with No Name should visit this town
This hard mechanical tale has none of the warmth of a traditional Christmas story. It almost makes me wish for the generic Christmas clichés. When the Kranks decide to skip Christmas, the retribution for their lack of conformity makes up 90% of the book.

The story is set on a street called Hemlock, which is an accurate moniker for the poison people that live there. This horribly intrusive community is reminiscent of Stalinesque Russian with neighbors spying on each other and even reporting each other to the police when they get out of line. It's supposed to be done for comedic effect, but instead comes across as mirthless suburban tyranny.

The Shields through most of the book are symptomatic of the festering evil of the neighborhood. The re-appearance of breast cancer in the Shields family is used as an obvious "heart-string pulling" device to evoke the holiday's "good will toward men" which is missing from the rest of the narrative.

In the warm and fuzzy conclusion, the neighborhood pitches in to save Christmas for the Kranks. You can almost hear the neighbors tallying their markers and preparing their told-you-so comments for the coming year. Luther Krank gives a gift to a neighbor and says "no string attached." He'd best keep his own marker for the gift since the strings of all the neighbors are being weaved around him and his wife.

The moral lesson of the book appears to be: conform and everyone will like you - but resist and you will be punished relentlessly. What a nice holiday message.

    Editorial Review

Even though it includes some of the same songs, this isn't the Time-Life Christmas collection advertised annually on TV. It's actually a budget version of that anthology, and not a bad deal at all. Some may argue it's missing the two Elvis Presley tracks found on the three-CD TV version. Others will contend that any self-respecting Christmas music aficionado probably already owns (or should own) Elvis's wonderful '57 Christmas Album. What's attractive about this one is it gathers a lot of classic singular performances in one place--a tad too much Bing Crosby, perhaps, but also the original hit versions of "Jingle Bell Rock," Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby," Burl Ives's "Holly Jolly Christmas," and the Drifters' "White Christmas" (the blueprint for Elvis's version). This is a terrific cross section of seasonal sounds.--Bill Holdship ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
The songs were traditional but the artists tried to modernize them and it sounded like when Rosanne sang the Star Spangled Banner. If at all possible don't oprn the CD - just send it back - I wish I could!

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs more songs
I think that this is a great collection of songs, but I believe that they should keep adding CDs to the collection; they skipped over lots of other good songs, like Gene Autry's version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Definitely a triple!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You For The Intro To Mehdi...
I've always enjoyed great christmas music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered "Christmas Treasures" by Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After searching online I listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to this CD several times I really must say that Christmas Treasures is a great find. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Relaxing and Special Yuletide Offering
I confess that it was the beautiful, archaic cover art that really prompted me to buy this CD; I assumed that the music would reflect the sensitively rendered Celtic cover:put simply, it did. This CD contains the delicate poetry of the Celtic musical style, which seems to hearken back to an earlier -- perhaps even ancient -- time, while still paying tribute to some of the season's traditional favorites (We Three Kings, Ding Ding! Dong! Merrily on High, Here We Come A-Wassailing, Once in Royal David's City); as well as to a number of lesser known musical selections -- such as (my favorite) The Wexford Carol, Masters in this Hall, The Gower Wassail, and so on.If you are like me, and feel the need during this special time of year, to reach far back beyond the crush of the modern world, then this CD will be a balm to your soul. ... Editorial Review

Cindy Horstman's proven she's an accomplished harpist, and on Christmas Harp she shows how lovely the 16 well-chosen standards can sound solely on the harp. The Irving, Texas, harpist opens with "Silent Night" and closes 15 tracks later with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." In between she plays such traditional pieces as "Coventry Carol," "What Child Is This?" and "Jingle Bells" alongside classical pieces by Handel ("Joy to the World") and Bach ("Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"). If there's anything more timeless at Christmas than mistletoe and candles all aglow, it's angel harp music. And Horstman is guaranteed to pluck your own heartstrings with these heavenly little pieces. --Martin Keller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely designs
These designs are lovely and can be used year round as well as at christmas. They are easy to do just requiring a pair of small sharp scissors. Wouldn't recommend for small children who shouldn't handle sharp scissors or can't make fine motor movements to get the edges etc. Will be able to use these for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars decking the halls, Martha style
The beauty of this book is in the colors; celebrating the Christmas spirit with exquisite combinations of creamy winter whites, blues, and golden yellows.
The ideas for ornaments, wreaths, and ingenuous ways to wrap money as a gift, are not slap-dash "quickies", but designs for objects that would be kept and enjoyed for many seasons to come. Standouts include the gorgeous Damask stockings, made from vintage fabrics, the wonderful fruit wreath in warm pastels, and my favorite, the "Ladies dancing and lords a-leaping" strung across the fireplace.

The recipes are sumptuous and shown in elegant settings, and very special is the sheet music that has the look of antique reproductions, of many familiar carols.
In the back of the volume there are templates for the many craft objects in the book, making the construction of them simpler, though you will obviously need a scanner and printer if you want to vary the size of the items, and many look like one would want to enlarge them.
As one would expect from Martha, the photography and layout is excellent, with thick, glossy pages. Even if one does not follow the patterns or recipes to the letter, it is a good "idea" book, and it's strength is its subtle color palette, used to great effect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass On This One. There are better books.
Try Carolyn Bell's book, Gooseberry Patch Old-Fashioned Country Christmas: A Holiday Keepsake of Recipes, Traditions, Homemade Gifts, Decorating Ideas & Favorite Childhood by Vickie Hutchins or the wonderful Gooseberry Patch series of books which are delightful.I always love the Gooseberry books.

    Editorial Review

Pound for pound, a good hand mixer is perhaps the most laborsavingkitchen device. While my grandmother relied on arm strength and force of will tobeat a stiff dough or to mash potatoes, a light and easily maneuvered hand mixersaves time and muscles. This one from KitchenAid features seven-speed digitaltouch control for precision mixing, and an electronic sensor that will adjustthe power as you go, so you maintain a steady mixing speed. If you're beating adelicate batter, you can use the Soft Start feature and ease into faster speed. When you're finished, the beaters are easily ejected. If you've ever battledheavy doughs, you'll appreciate the beaters' design: they don't have a centerpost, so dough won't collect in the middle of the beater and clog the machine. It's also designed for easy cleaning. --Laura Cuthbert ... 1-0 out of 5 stars country of manufacture
Amazon lists the country of manufacture as the USA. The information is false. I called to confirm and discovered that Kitchen Aid manufactures this product in China, a country that floods the world market with products manufactured in forced labor camps. Moreover, given the cost of labor in China, it seems that Kitchen Aid charges a PREMIUM for this product. Braun, on the other hand, manufactures their hand mixers in Spain--a country with laws against slave labor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but, not quite enough power
I bought this one last year.I have given it to my sister and am now purchasing the 9 sp.It was quiet and easy to operate, but when beating egg whites just not enough power.I like the new beater style (thin wires), easy to clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful little powerhouse from KitchenAid
You know there are times when you just don't want to haul out the big mixer, right? Well, being the holiday hostess for my large extended family, my Irish brothers love their mashed potatoes. When I have a holiday dinner and my countertops are loaded with lots of other wonderful holiday dinner foods waiting to be served, hauling out the big mixer is just not an option.Out comes this handy little KitchenAid hand mixer! In a jiffy, this little powerhouse mashes the potatoes and then away it goes so dinner can proceed as needed. It's a really cool tool and I'm glad to have it at times like that. Also, I have pulled it out to mix pancake batter, sometimes cake batter, and other easy to mix items. It's easy to wipe down and the beaters pop right off to go into your dishwasher.Easy clean, easy to use, easy storage -- what more could you want? ... Editorial Review

Le Creuset's brightly colored, virtually indestructiblesilicone spatulas created a buzz when they were first introduced. Nowthis set combines six red ones in a complementary stoneware storagecrock. Not only will these spatulas serve every cooking need, butthey'll add a splash of color to any kitchen. Durable, flexible, andstain-resistant, the spatulas endure incredible temperatures--800degrees F and 425 degrees C--without melting or discoloring. Thespatulas: one tapered, slotted spoon spatula (3-1/2 inches long and2-1/2 inches wide at its base); two solid spoon spatulas (3-1/2 inches by2-5/8 inches and 2-7/8 inches by 2-1/8 inches); and three scrapingspatulas of different widths (2 inches, 1-3/8 inches, and 1 inch). Thehandsome red crock stands 5-7/8 inches high, and its flared mouth is 5inches in diameter, providing plenty of room for tools other than thespatulas. The spatulas' heads slide off their wooden handles to go intoa dishwasher, but hand washing is more convenient. --Fred Brack ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars You probably don't need all of these!
I bought this set about three years ago and I simply would not cook without them. I am as enthusiastic as other reviewers who have given this set five stars, except that I only really use two out of the six pieces.

If I had to do it over, I would buy the very attractive pot and three each of the medium sized spoonula and the small spatula. I simply do not use the others. They are gathering dust as we speak.

Now if your cooking is a bit different than mine, you may have different needs, but I cook or bake four or five times a week, and I simply do not use 2/3 of this set. And, it is only the spoonula which gets used in high heat environments.

For room temperatures, I often find more use for a spatula which is a lot stiffer than these silicone plastics.

I recommend you find some way of buying only the pot and six of the medium spoonulas! Even these wear out from small nicks and cuts over time, and you do not want to find yourself without one at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Set
I bought this same set at an outlet mall (much better price, but same product).

They are very well built and have stood up to just about anything I can throw at them from heat to various sauces. They have never melted, scorched or stained so far! Even though they have wood handles, there is a protective finish that keeps them from staining. I did place one through the dishwasher (not recommended) and it came out fine too.

They have replaced all of my miscellaneous pieces I have had laying around and now I have an attractive addition to my kitchen as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait...
I saw this set in the blue on Amazon just before Christmas for the amazing price of $34.99. Knowing how much these normally are I quickly ordered them and was told they were on backorder and would be shipped to me when they were available. For that price, I would wait as long as it took to get them! I finally got them early February and they are worth the wait. I have used them everyday since receiving them and I wonder how I did without them. I wish I'd ordered my mother a set at the same time I ordered my set. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Indispensable in the kitchen, these three mixing bowls are pretty enough to use as serving vessels and to hold fruit on the counter. They go safely into the oven and through the dishwasher without harming their glossy, lead-free glaze, which does not absorb odors or moisture and is so hard it will not crack, discolor, or scratch. The bowls measure 10, 8, and 5-1/2 inches in diameter.

Since 1850, Emile Henry ceramicware has been made in Burgundy, where a unique clay is kiln-fired into a ceramic unsurpassed for conducting and retaining heat. Prized worldwide, Emile Henry products come in a wide range of colors, from the tones (with creamy interiors) of the rustic Le Potier line to the bright hues (with white interiors) of the Couleurs line, of which these bowls are gleaming examples. 5-0 out of 5 stars There is nothing here not to like...
Except, perhaps, for the list price, there is nothing to improve upon with these fine mixing bowls. I chanced across a set in a mustard colored hue not presently listed here and got a major discount... so I have nothing but praise for the set.The ceramic is dense and solid, with a bell-like ring and a formidable resistance to chipping and cracking. The glaze is smooth, easy to clean inside and out, and simply beautiful. And the three nesting sizes cover perfectly the full range a moderately sized family will need. Pyrex would work as well, perhaps, but in between uses, these Emile Henry bowls can be proudly kept in plain sight!

4-0 out of 5 stars So pretty, I almost hate to use them in the kitchen.
Although you will probably say that there's no good reason to spend so much on mixing bowls that will eventually break (as opposed to good ol' plastic bowls), I have to say that these bowls are a welcome, attractive, and flexible addition to any kitchen.
The bowls themselves are very sturdy and well made. The colors manage to remain both deep and true without looking too pre-fabricated. They are microwave-and dishwasher-safe. They are extremely roomy yet compact; you can pile pounds of pasta into the second bowl itself.
Besides the rich color, I enjoy the flexibility of these bowls. The smallest of the set makes a perfect cereal, mixing, or soup bowl. Mmm! I'm hungry! My favorite (almost) one-dish meal to make in it are sesame noodles: mix up some sesame oil, tahini, vinegar, sugar, and soy sauce in the little bowl, cook up some soba noodles and dump 'em in, and there you have it.
One thing: the reviewer below makes a great point. Be careful when using any kind of metal utensil. Avoid scraping the sides of the bowl too roughly; you don't want to ruin the lovely finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Hot!
I lusted after these bowls for months! Finally, I purchased them and they were well worth the money.

The editorial states that the bowls are resistant to scratches etc. but, I highly recommend not using metal utensils on this product line. After using a wire wisk a few times, to whip up eggs, I noticed a small, very fine chip in the bottom of one of the bowls. Now I only use plastic or silicon whisks/utensils when I use them for food preparation.

All things considered, the bowls were a great addition to a red kitchen! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Different glaze on red mugs
I ordered all three colors of these mugs - red, blue and white. The blue and white mugs have a shiny, even glaze. The red glaze is mottled and has more of a matte finish, giving it a more rustic, country look. The mugs are great but the three different colors look very different and really don't match each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars everyone's favorite mug
Combined with steaming, milky coffee, these cheery, red mugs add somuch pleasure to my day.The red is vibrant set against the white interior and the glaze on the outside has a slightly mottled effect that adds richness. The mug is nicely weighted and large enough to hold a very satisfying amount of beverage. It feels good in my hands. ...
