Editorial Review

For making espresso and coffee drinks such as cappuccino and café latte at home, this set covers all bases--it even includes a book that explains coffee and cocoa and offers coffee- and cocoa-drink recipes. The compact (9-3/4 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide by 8-1/2 inches deep) electric espresso machine works simply. Equipped with a tight boiler cap and valve for safety, it brews up to four cups of espresso in about five minutes. Just pour cold water into the boiler, spoon espresso-roast coffee (a 10-1/2-ounce can is included) into the filter basket, place the basket into the filter holder, lock the holder into place, and switch the knob to "brew." In about four minutes, espresso flows into a four-cup carafe that sits on the machine's drip plate: four demitasse cups and saucers, with four spoons, await.

If cappuccino, café latte, hot chocolate, or other milk-based drinks are desired, turn the knob to "froth" and the machine's stainless-steel wand emits steam. Half-fill the frothing pitcher with cold milk (chocolate-flavored for hot chocolate), slip the rubber frothing tip on the wand, place the frothing tip just under the surface of the milk, and heat the milk while creating a foaming cap of froth: two cappuccino cups and saucers await. Pour a shot or two of brewed espresso into them, spoon milk and froth on top, and enjoy. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat the price!
Since I just wanted a small unit for a morning cappuccino, this Melitta is perfect for me. The coffee is hot and tastes good. (Just experiment to get the right amount of coffee.) I like a full mug, so I make two cups at the same time. Why would anyone gripe about all the free accessories or that they're made in China? (How many things do you find "Made in the US" any more??) The heavy white frothing pitcher alone was worth it for me (and Melitta coffee beans were included in my box--that's a $7 bonus right there!) There was a free cookbook and all those cute espresso cups, spoons, cappuccino cups, etc.! But the important thing was the unit itself--it works fine for me. I find it best to let the coffee start dripping into the carafe (wait until it's about half way done) before starting to froth the milk--to get more steam; not right away. Otherwise, it's been a gem of a machine so far, and an incredible value! I'd highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars the basic starter espresso maker
i am a full time student and am on a budget.
i needed a unit that would make espresso and this came with cups.

good:
-inexspensive
-makes good espresso(use fresh grounds)
-easy to use
-compact
-easy to clean
bad:
-it has problems with making warm froth(i drink only espresso, so not a problem for me).
- melitta could make a better instruction booklet
-the desert book doesnt give tips on how to make espresso

this is a good starter unit for the home espresso maker, but if you are an exsperinced espresso maker, you might want one with more frills.

this is the basic espresso maker, but it works well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic espresso maker for the price!
I can't figure out what you guys are all in a twist over. I bought this machine, minus the espresso cups, frothing pitcher, etc., and I only paid $10 less for all the goodies you got (this offer wasn't available when I was looking for an espresso machine.)

This is the SAME model as the one I got, minus all the frills you got for ten bucks. I bought this over a year ago, and it's a FANTASTIC espresso machine! It works great, makes wonderful espresso, fantastic lattes (my fave), and it's easy to clean and completely reliable.

I was looking for a second model to give to my boyfriend for a birthday president, and lo and behold, this uber deal is available! I'm taking advantage of it, and why not? Ever since my boyfriend tasted how great the espresso is from this machine, he's been trying to steal mine!

I HIGHLY recommend it (andyou guys would know this if amazon hadn't removed the OTHER review on just the machine, minus all the bonuses. There, this same machine got FOUR stars, and that's what I based my original purchase on.

Btw...they were RIGHT.) :) ... Read more

La Pavoni PA-Burr Coffee Grinder, White
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $39.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Grind coffee with the ease and accuracy of a professional with this coffee grinder by La Pavoni. The bean chamber conveniently holds 4 ounces of coffee (enough for 18 cups) so you won't need to keep refilling it when brewing for a large group. The fineness selector on the left side of the unit has 19--count 'em, 19--settings, from coarse to extra fine. And ground size does matter, as this accurate grinder will soon teach you: use coarse grounds for your French press, medium for your drip machine, and fine for espresso. Happily, this precision machine doesn't leave much room for human error. Set the amount of coffee you are going to grind for the number of cups desired, and an automatic portion timer will hold you to the proper grind time, switching itself off when finished. This heavy-duty grinder grinds slowly with burrs instead of a blade so there's no heat buildup, thereby ensuring those flavorful oils you know and love remain intact. --Jane DePaolo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's worked well for me...
I've used it a lot since I bought it in 2001.The only problem I had with it was my own fault.I also bought one as a gift at the same time, and as far as I know, it's still running, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Works great!Fails quickly.
This grinder grinds well but failed after just 2 months of operation.Don't buy it unless you want to waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Espresso after tweaking
As others have commented, this grinder does not grind fine enough for espresso out of the box. However, it is fairly easy to tweak the grinder to go finer.I can now grind fine enough to choke my espresso machine.

To tweak: simply undo the three screws inside the bean hopper.Lift the top off.Adjust the setting to 1 (finest), then lift the adjusting wheel out and reposition to a new setting (I used 7). Reassemble the machine, and now you can go several steps finer.I use a setting four or five steps past 1 for my espresso.

I am not a coffee snob, but I do enjoy the taste of the 25 second espresso shots that I have achieved with the tweaked grinder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great quality
This brush has held up very well! I still like the design. It looks better than what I've seen available in stores. It's also weighted nicely. Doesn't feel or look cheap like those plastic or wood ones do.

5-0 out of 5 stars much better than a pastry brush
I've used this brush for a couple of months now and it works just fine--much better than the pastry bruch I'd been using for the 8 years before that. All the coffee grinds slide nicely out of my coffee grinder and into my coffee filter. In response to the reviewers below, I haven't noticed any problems with the quality of the brush's bristles.

3-0 out of 5 stars needs better bristles
i certainly prefer this brush to a pastry or other brush you may have in the kitchen drawer, but the bristles need to be upgraded to something that won't fray after only a few uses.the grip, size, and ergonomics of the brush are great, i'm simply fearful that if they bristles become too frayed they'll scatter grinds everywhere as i'll lose directional control of where i "sweep" the grinds.its difficult to pin point the area i'm trying to brush if the bristles become too frayed. ...
