Le Creuset 7-Piece Spatula Set with Crock, Black
by Le Creuset
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $59.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Le Creuset's brightly colored, virtually indestructiblesilicone spatulas created a buzz when they were first introduced. Nowthis set combines six red ones in a complementary stoneware storagecrock. Not only will these spatulas serve every cooking need, butthey'll add a splash of color to any kitchen. Durable, flexible, andstain-resistant, the spatulas endure incredible temperatures--800degrees F and 425 degrees C--without melting or discoloring. Thespatulas: one tapered, slotted spoon spatula (3-1/2 inches long and2-1/2 inches wide at its base); two solid spoon spatulas (3-1/2 inches by2-5/8 inches and 2-7/8 inches by 2-1/8 inches); and three scrapingspatulas of different widths (2 inches, 1-3/8 inches, and 1 inch). Thehandsome white crock stands 5-7/8 inches high, and its flared mouth is 5inches in diameter, providing plenty of room for tools other than thespatulas. The spatulas' heads slide off their wooden handles to go intoa dishwasher, but hand washing is more convenient. --Fred Brack ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars You probably don't need all of these!
I bought this set about three years ago and I simply would not cook without them. I am as enthusiastic as other reviewers who have given this set five stars, except that I only really use two out of the six pieces.

If I had to do it over, I would buy the very attractive pot and three each of the medium sized spoonula and the small spatula. I simply do not use the others. They are gathering dust as we speak.

Now if your cooking is a bit different than mine, you may have different needs, but I cook or bake four or five times a week, and I simply do not use 2/3 of this set. And, it is only the spoonula which gets used in high heat environments.

For room temperatures, I often find more use for a spatula which is a lot stiffer than these silicone plastics.

I recommend you find some way of buying only the pot and six of the medium spoonulas! Even these wear out from small nicks and cuts over time, and you do not want to find yourself without one at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Set
I bought this same set at an outlet mall (much better price, but same product).

They are very well built and have stood up to just about anything I can throw at them from heat to various sauces. They have never melted, scorched or stained so far! Even though they have wood handles, there is a protective finish that keeps them from staining. I did place one through the dishwasher (not recommended) and it came out fine too.

They have replaced all of my miscellaneous pieces I have had laying around and now I have an attractive addition to my kitchen as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait...
I saw this set in the blue on Amazon just before Christmas for the amazing price of $34.99. Knowing how much these normally are I quickly ordered them and was told they were on backorder and would be shipped to me when they were available. For that price, I would wait as long as it took to get them! I finally got them early February and they are worth the wait. I have used them everyday since receiving them and I wonder how I did without them. I wish I'd ordered my mother a set at the same time I ordered my set. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is no ordinary spatula--the bright red head tells you that immediately. Use it to stir up a pot of spaghetti sauce, and the spatula won't discolor. It's heat-resistant up to 400 degrees--great for long, slow stirring--so no fears of it melting or warping. You can also use it for tasting and scraping the walls of your nonstick cookware--it won't damage them.

The Good Grips line features durable, nonslip flexible handles on every product. Ergonomically designed to fit the palm comfortably and softly, the pressure-absorbing processed rubber handle puts less tension on the hands, while providing an outstanding grip. Made from the same material as dishwasher gaskets, the handles are slip-proof, wet or dry, as well as dishwasher-safe. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Quality problems
I purchased a few of these for myself and friends. From the day I got my spoon spatula it was my favorite kitchen tool, especially since I could use it when making sauces or frying onions and veggies. One day when making a non-meat tomato sauce the handle simply broke off leaving the handle in my hand and the spatula in the pot. I wrote to OXO about this twice in the last 2 months with no reply and this is most frustrating to me. Anyway, I am now using a KitchenAid product which feels much more sturdy and KitchenAid responds to e-mails IMMEDIATELY.

1-0 out of 5 stars OXO Good not so good this time
the spoon is great but the handle bends like a noodle.

3-0 out of 5 stars good and bad
Wow, another reviewer hit the nail on the head for me. I like this spoon, in theory. I like that it's red, because despite other claims, I've found that tomato sauce WILL stain my white and clear ones.

But, like they said. I never want to use it, because the shaft is so damn flimsy. That plus the handle is almost TOO thick, and the combination of the two I find myself holding it by the shaft. I think I prefer thinner instruments, since I've been using these cheapo spoons I got at the supermarket rather than all my ergonomic stuff (oxo, kitchenaid..)

Despite that, I would probably love it 100% if the shaft was totally rigid. The spoon part is flexible enough to make up for total ridgity in the shaft. (no snickering!) ... Read more

This is a single measuring cup that will replace the others floating around your kitchen--even the teaspoons! Cone-shaped, with a sturdy base and tight-fitting lid, this little beaker is perfect for those recipes with odd amounts, such as "two cups plus one tablespoon." There's a lip around the top edge that acts beautifully as a spout--no dripping when pouring liquids, from water to beaten egg yolks. Measurements include pints, cups, ounces, ml/ccm, tablespoons, and teaspoons, and all are written clearly in black print. The lid fits snugly enough that you can snap it on and shake the beaker for easy mixing of ingredients. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Best for Liquids
As a former chemist, among other things, I really appreciate this measuring cup as the very best improvement over the old pyrex glass cups. The shape is ideal for doing fine measurements down to around three or four tablespoons; however, I suggest you stop there, especially for oils, as you are likely to leave five to 10 percent of the measured liquid behind.

If I were to make any suggestions at all on the design of this 'beaker', it would be to release it in a glass version. I know this would be much more breakable, but I think it would also be much more sanitary, as I would feel much more confident that it would not get scratched and that it would stand up to a high heat wash.

For those who use it so much that you are tempted to use it for solids, I say don't. There are really good reasons to do solids with the stainless steel spoons and cups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best measuring device I ever used
The cone shape really helps to get an accurate measurement for small quantities. I use it almost every day, and the lid is really helpfull; it fits tightly and has even prevented a spill when I knocked it over once. There is only one problem. I like it so well I am going to have to buy a couple more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but easily broken.
I've gone through 2 of these. Each time, a crack develops - straight down one side and up the other. I have not been rough with them. In fact, the last one broke when I was washing it with a soft cloth. Functionally, it's a great idea - smaller quantities are measured with greater accuracy. But, I'm not buying more until it is made from sturdier material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best funnel you can get
You think plastic... weak, melting... No
It is sturdy yet slightly flexible not to be easily breakable.
It handles warm to hot liquid real well as it is made with a some kind of high temperature plastic.
The best are these rubber lines that helps it sticking to the recipient into which you are pouring. No third hand needed nor worries about hot or messy spills.
A little mesh, provided with the set, can be inserted to strain the liquid which is really handy.
Storage of the Funnel set is nice as the funnels and the grid nest into each other.
What might have been nice? Maybe a slightly bigger handle for when we work with kids.
Still, a must have for every cook. ... Read more

Washing and drying leafy vegetables has never been simpler or more fun than with this gadget. One hand is all you need to press the soft, cushioned knob to start the spinning; when the built-in brake is applied and the job is done, the basket and bowl can be taken apart and used separately. The knob locks down for easy storage, and the spinner is dishwasher-safe. Use this tool with lettuce, raw spinach, broad-leafed herbs, and greens--they end up clean and oh-so-dry, and the drier your leaves, the better salad dressings will adhere and the less mushy your sandwich bread will become. 2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great until it broke
This was a wonderful salad spinner for the several months it worked. Then it broke. In my kitchen, very few things break. The occasional wooden spatula after fifteen years of use is fine but things tend not to break unless I drop them. This is my second Oxo product that broke while I was using it (the other one was a knife--yes, a knife snapped in two while I was cutting).I still love my Oxo peeler but with two out of three of my Oxo products breaking, I'm done with Oxo for the most part.

1-0 out of 5 stars worked well until it exploded
I bought this item and used it for about 2 months, then It exploded while I was spinning a salad and was impossible to repair. I went on to buy a Tupperware salad spinner (green) and have been using it for four years with no problems at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Agree it's great ... but it has 1 huge problem
This has got to be the best salad spinner ever, on that point I agree with all the other rave reviews. But just try picking this unit up off a shelf when you have wet hands--or even dry hands!!!!!!! It's difficult!!!! Just wish they would put a small, very small, handle, ridge or inset on the bowl!!! Please!!! ... Read more

If you love your OXO salad spinner, here’s a way to make it even more useful. This four-piece accessory kit includes a covered berry basket, which fits snugly inside both OXO’s large and small salad spinners and dries berries and herbs delicately without bruising or damaging them. The set also features a nylon lettuce knife for cutting greens without causing them to brown as a stainless-steel knife can. Finally, a lid to the salad spinner itself lets you store greens right in the spinner after drying and extends their storage life. 3-0 out of 5 stars Lid only for large salad spinner
I bought this as a gift to go along with the small salad spinner that I had purchased.Everything sounded great, such as the berry basket fitting both the small and large salad spinners.

It does have a lid for the whole salad spinner for storage but the lid only fits the large salad spinner. It would have been much nicer to have included 2 lids for the salad spinner, one for the larger spinner and one for the smaller spinner. Then the kit would have been fully compatible with both spinners.

Overall everything looks fine and as though its made well but since I bought this as a gift I haven't used it.But my recipient will have an extra lid handy for miscellaneous things. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Accessories to Have
I love my salad spinner and when I saw this set, I thought that it was a useless ploy to get more money. However, when I decided to buy it, I was rather surprised. The set itself is of the same quality as all of my other OXO products. The set fits both the mini salad spinner and the large salad spinner, so you don't have to worry about getting the right set.

I like the idea of the storage lids, but I don't use them often.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must if you have the large salad spinner!
This set is the ultimate addition to, in my opinion, the best greens dryer system on the market. The smaller bowl does work very well inside the large spinner, and I have also found, for those of you that also own the smaller OXO spinner, that the bowl fits like a glove, thus avoiding the additional bouncing around that does occur in the larger.A must when washing and drying delicate berries.

The plastic knife is a must when cutting greens, as to avoid those nasty "rust" spots that do crop up when slicing with a metal blade, thus extending the life of your salad for a day or so.

Add the lids, and you have the perfect short-term storage system.

Bravo, OXO!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful!
I think some of the other reviews mentioned this, but pumping too much can cause this item to implode. It happened to me after the fourth or fifth time I used it.Now, up until this point it was a great item, and worked exactly as advertised, but for this thing not to have a simple safety valve built in is just silly.Or at least make the structure stronger.Me and the wife bought one of those vacumn sealer machines instead, and it works as well (if not better), and with greater versatility than the instant marinator. So save your money, and buy something else instead. =-(

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing ROCKS !!@#$%^
I was taking a cooking class at Viking Home Chef and the instructor usually mentions a kitchen tool or product that they are using for that day's class.Of course, they are trying to sell you product.

So, I was a bit skeptical about this thing...Now, I am a believer!I gilled some flank steak that I marinaded llast night for about 30 minutes using the Intant Marinader is AWESOME!It really does work very, very well.

The trick is to place the meat & marinade into the marinader and pump out the air and THEN RELEASE THE VACUUM(NEGATIVE PRESSURE).
By vaccuming out the all of air in the marinader (and the meat), you are actaully opening all the pores in the meat. And when you release the Vacuum pressure the meat immediately absorbs the marinade into the meat. Each time you pump AND RELEASE the air pressure is equal to about an hour of normal marinating time.

Last night, I pumped and relased six times(=6 hours of marinating) while the grill was heating up.Mmmm yummmay!

BUY ONE OF THESE THINGS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it so much I gave it away and bought another!
Its true, I really loved the little marinater, but my daughter had gotten into a lot of backyard grilling so I gave it to her and they loved it too.Now I miss it so much that I'm buying another one. ... Read more

Orange-X 5-1/2-Inch Mortar & Pestle, Black
by Orange-X
Kitchen
list price: $40.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

This attractive and durable mortar and pestle is ideal for grinding almost any herb or spice, from rosemary to anise to chiles (perfect for a piquant red mole). The mortar features a coarse surface for grinding, and is5-1-/2 inches in diameter with 4/14-inch tall sides, while the pestle is 7 inches long. Both are constructed of powder-coated cast iron, which provides stability and strength, and the mortar has a convenient spout on one side and a nonskid base. The pestle’s ergonomically designed Santoprene handle is strong enough to deal with the toughest herbs, but soft enough that it won’t wear out your hands. This combo should last a lifetime--but you do have to treat them with proper care. Before the first usage (and after each subsequent usage) wash the set with a mild dishwashing liquid, rinse with warm water, and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Then spread a thin coat of oil over the cast-iron surfaces of both the mortar and the pestle (vegetable oil is recommended, but be sure not to use a salted fat, such as margarine, and don’t season in the oven). Never allow the mortar and pestle to drip dry or wash in dishwasher, and be sure to season all of the exposed surfaces right after they’ve been washed and dried. This will not only prevent foods from sticking but will also prevent rust. --A.J. Rathbun ... Read more

What separates human beings from animals is the egg slicer. The Norpro Stainless Steel Egg Slicer does not reflect human dignity in the way that a good egg slicer should.Any good egg slicer radiates truth and grace with each slice. The Norpro Egg Slicer does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars the only kitchen scissors you'll ever need
A pair of these scissors came with a set of Sabatier knives that I ordered, and I liked them so much that I bought a second pair separately. They are easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. The high quality of the construction ensures that they will last for years, and I find the design to be ergonomically suited to the hand as well as pleasing to the eye.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Durable, Low End Sabatier
As part of purchasing multiple Sabatier knife sets over the years I've come to own two pairs of these shares.

They are decent low end shears, mass produced in China.I am surprised these shears are getting such great reviews.I was AMAZED someone was using them to cut food, but I've since learned for delicate herbs such as fresh chives, this is actually recommended.Still, these are kitchen shears not poultry shears.I don't reach for these shears when food is involved.

I keep a pair in a kitchen drawer and use them for "light duty" jobs such as cutting off basil or thyme leaves.I can't imagine using these shears to open a bottle since mine have visibly bent from light duty.

Low end shears by Henkels International will last much longer AND many of their shears can be taken apart and sharpened.

These shears are made of the same medium quality steel Sabatier uses for their Chinese knife sets and this steel will rust if left wet of if food remains on the blade.

Of course, you should always hand wash and dry knives and kitchen shears but these will rust more easily than the high end German and French steel products (which cost much more of course).

You'd be better off with one of the higher end shears sold on Amazon. ...

An inexpensive alternative to a professional stainless-steelmandoline, this device makes it possible to quickly, uniformly, andsafely slice and julienne vegetables and fruits. It also shreds cabbageand neatly dices potatoes, tomatoes, and onions. For safety, a holderfirmly grips food with stainless-steel prongs so fingers are protectedfrom the German surgical-steel blades, and the three insertsaccompanying the device lock in position. The inserts act as a guidefor slicing against the V-frame's knife that reverses to create sliceseither 1/4-inch or 1/16-inch thick and two julienne inserts forcreating 1/8-inch or 3/8-inch strips. For storage, the V-frame, allthree inserts, and the safety holder fit into a caddy that can standupright on the counter, lie flat in a drawer, or hang on the wall. 5-0 out of 5 stars Have had one longer than....
I bought one the year before my youngest son was born - he is 18.5 years - it is still working like a charm. I have purchased want-to-be's in the past for family couldn't find the V-Slicer at the time. Now I am buying 5 for those I did wrong in the past - with the fakes - lol.I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite kitchen Gadget!!!
I bought one of these slicers about 10 years ago from an infomercial, and I absolutely LOVE it!I have used it on a daily basis. My most favorite use is to make quick work out of dicing large onions, getting the job done so fast that there are never any tears! It takes the tedium out of slicing, dicing, and chopping so that you can get on with the cooking! With the V-Slicer, you can turn out professional cuts every time!I highly recommend this product. As one reviewer said, the blades are very sharp and therefore last for years.Care and caution must be used when working with this item.In all the years I have used mine, I never had a mishap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another quick sell gimmick....
When I first saw the V-Slicer, it was at the State Fair.As with most quick sell get rich items at the fair, I was very skeptical that this kitchen 'tool' would truly deliver results time and time again.

I've now owned the V-slicer (plus additional inserts) for 2+years and it's as amazing as the day I saw it at the fair. It's still razor sharp and very easy to clean (just wash with water).

The V-slicer is great for slicing anything and almost everything. It does wonders on tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, celery, onions, apples, and much more.I particularly like to slice up some nice thin hash browns and season them up for breakfast on Sunday mornings.

On top of it all, the price of the V-slicer cannot be beat.I've scene similar products selling for $50 - $100+ and I can help but think those are ridiculously over priced.Sure they're made of steel, but this V-slicer is a solid very sturdy plastic that maintains stability while slicing and allows for very simple clean up.

One word of caution, the blades are SHARP!Again, after 2 years, they're still extremely razor sharp.

The V-slicer has proved to be one of the most useful and least expensive tools we use in our home kitchen. For the price and usefulness, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

This professional mandoline slicer for slicing and shredding potatoes and other vegetables comes with everything you need: a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, a plastic storage lid, four interchangeable cutting blade cartridges, and a cutting slide with a safety guard. Just slide in the cartridge you need--thin slice, thick slice, julienne (1/8-inch), or french-fry cutter (1/4-inch)--press the safety guard with sharp prongs onto the end of the vegetable, and slice away. The safety guard rests on side rails over the blade so your hand can't slip, and the entire cutting slide apparatus snaps onto the top of the bowl. The stainless-steel bowl has four rubber grippers underneath so it won't slide while you're slicing. Pop the plastic storage lid on top and put leftovers in the fridge. Every part of the mandoline slicer, including the cutting blades, is dishwasher-safe. Lifetime limited warranty. --Doree Armstrong ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's simple mechanics, folks
I bought this item about 2 years ago and use it mostly for slicing potatoes and making cole slaw.It is very easy to use, and despite what you may have read from others, it is easy to remove the blades as well.I understand the problem well.If you grasp the edge of the blade without really paying attention to how it is designed, the tendency is to pull down a bit. This puts pressure on the small piece of plastic that is designed to lock the blade in place, thus causing you to fight against the "lock". If you pull the blade slightly upward and out, it slides out very easily. For that matter, straight out works, too. It may not be fancy, but for my needs, it works great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this item!!!
We received this mandoline as a Christmas gift, so we cannot return it without risking hurt feelings. It is cheaply made, has few cutting options, and worst of all, the blades are extremely hard to remove, resulting in a badly cut finger!

Hoffritz is apparently out of business (Salten has a license to sell some of their products, but not this one), and I can see why.

4-0 out of 5 stars First mandolin I ever had; I like it
I really like the covered bowl which catches the slices. I am a basic tool person, knife or grater, but I think I will use and enjoy this thing. TV Cooks use them, that's why I even knew what it was.:-) ... Read more

In Italian, "mezzaluna" means "half moon," and the curved shape of this incredible chopper echoes the moon's shape in the midpoint of its cycle. Its extremely sharp blades make quick work of vegetables, meats, and hard cheeses, and are ideal for dicing leafy herbs. Hold the mezzaluna firmly by the black knobs and, with a rolling motion, seesaw the blades over a thick slice of onion or a pile of fresh cilantro. You can chop as roughly or dice as finely as you choose. To protect the blades and your fingers, keep the protective plastic sleeve the mezzaluna arrives in. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars one blade is better
Mezzalunas are great, but any w/ two blades are too tough to clean and get the minced items out from between the blades. My advice is to buy one of the many models w/ a single blade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, ergonomic, non-electric chopping
My grandmother swore by one of these rocker-shaped knives for doing nuts and other fine chopping. I have one, and I use it a lot for mushrooms, nuts and herbs. Having said how great it is, I have to add some caveats:

1. It's sharp, yeah, I know, duh! But...food gets caught between the two blades and it's tempting to run a finger in there to push it out. Well, don't. Keep a spatula or chopstick handy to push out anything caught there.

2. You really should use a concave sort of chopping board if you can find one. While a flat plastic chopping board works just fine, a curved board makes chopping easier.

3. Some things just aren't good for this knife: dryish but not TOO hard things (nuts, celery, etc) work best. The wetter the food, the more it sticks. Even so, I do use this for chopped chicken livers. But for nuts, it's about my favorite knife to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, it's decent, but there's more versatile designs.
It's good for mincing, and the form is a nice take on the half-moon design. However, an ulu would be better. It's single blade, but is good for slicing and shearing as well as mincing. This can only do mincing, due to it's handle design and blades.
Personally, I prefer a tool with more function, like an ulu. Can't beat a design that's been used for thousands of years (for a good reason...) ... Read more

The knives in this set include an 8-inch chef's knife, 8-inch slicing knife, 5-inch utility knife, 3-1/2-inch paring knife, and six steak knives. 2-0 out of 5 stars Report after 18 months - rust and breakage
I have had this set for 18 months, and some serious problems are beginning to show.I would be angry if I had paid as much as is now being asked for these. The strong point is that the knives take and keep an edge to a satisfactory degree, but they have already developed permanent rust spots. This is in spite of their always being cleaned immediately and then dried before being returned to the knife block. This week, the "shears" broke asunder while cutting the breastbone of a roasted chicken. When they arrived and I discovered that they were made in China, I considered sending them back. Now, however, I remember a French Sabatier handle disintegrating in my hand while I was chopping vegetables 20 years ago, so it may not matter where they are made. Two points make a straight line, and you get what you pay for.Since I paid very little, I give these a second star.

1-0 out of 5 stars Handle pulls off
The "Perfect Grip" handle is bonded to the knife body using some type of adhesive. My wife was cutting through a large zucchini when the "Perfect Grip" handle pulled off of the knife body.Of course we were both disappointed with our new knife set.We now feel it is worth spending considerably more to ensure we get a high quality knife set that is made to last a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can you be disappointed?
It never ceases to amaze me that people will buy something like a big knife set like this for under fifty dollars and then have the gall to complain that it's quality is not very good.Of course the quality is not going to compare to Wusthof or Henckels, but if that is the quality you feel you need, then you have no business buying the cheap stuff in the first place.

I give this knife set 5 stars because it is a lot better than I thought it was going to be when I ordered it.People see it sitting on my counter, and they think I have a nice expensive knife set.The knives cut well, and in case they get dull, the set comes with a sharpening steel.I have even cut through inch thick wooden dowel rods with the serrated steak knives. And that's another benefits of these knives... when you've just moved, and you don't know where anything is, and you're pretty sure you don't have a small hand saw anyway, you can use these knives to cut pretty much whatever you need to, because they cost so little that you don't really care if you mess them up a little anyway.Sometimes it's great to have tools you just don't have to worry about. The surprising thing was that after cutting the wooden dowel rods, the steak knife hadn't even gotten dull.now that is high quality inexpensive kitchen cutlery for you.

The only material and noteworthy flaw these knives have that you may wish to know about before purchasing is that they rust if left in the sink for a couple days.I'm not talking about big flaky rust here, just brown discoloration that is difficult to clean off.I never expected them to be truly stainless anyway, so this was more a laughing point with my roommates than a disappointment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good everyday knives
I got these knives 2 years ago and still have yet to sharpen them. They work great for every little thing I have to cut.The red knife is great for slicing through muffins or small loaves of bread, my husband likes it for cutting sandwiches. The little blue knife is great for peeling potatoes or apples and the other two do all kinds of various cuttings.I would definitely buy them again or give them as gifts. I also like the colored handles not only for the colors sake but they are easy to remember which knife is which when the handle is the only thing poking out of the cup I have them standing in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift idea!
I bought my married-with-kids sister a set of these colorful knives, and she absolutely loves them. She even bought sets for their vacation homes on the coast! They're inexpensive and are great for gift giving.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but don't expect too much!
I bought these knives on a special. I got what I paid for. I would have given 2 1/2 stars if that was an option. If you have more than one person cooking at the same time, it is nice to be able to grab a knife for some quick work rather than doing time share. However, these don't hold a candle to the real deal. Oh, they are colorful :) ... Read more

Microplane Grater/Zester

Editorial Review

For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High shipping charges
The zester is fine but a $10.24 shipping charge on a $15.99 item is ridiculous. The only reason I bought this item was that I had a gift certificate that had to be used.Such shipping charges are outrageous!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What did I do with out this grater
I use this for everything. If a recipe calls for minced garlic or ginger, I grate it.I have even sprayed it with pam and shaved crayons with it for a school project.I will never be without this again EVER

5-0 out of 5 stars No kitchen should be without one
I love, love, love this little gem of a tool. I have had mine for over 5 years and have had no problem with it getting dull even though I use it almost daily. (Perhaps this is because, like any good cutting implement, I never wash it in the dishwasher.)

In addition to using it for hard cheeses, and zesting lemons and limes one of our favorite uses for the microplane is grating nutmeg. It does a top notch job with nutmeg! I consider the Microplane one of my three favorite kitchen gadgets and have made it my mission to make sure other members of my family and close friends have one in their kitchens.

Recently, I found that you can purchase an accessory item, a housing that holds the item being grated that you can slide up and down the blade. I think this would be useful for those who are nervous around sharp objects. I personally find these devices cumbersome and would rather wear one of those kevlar gloves for protection while grating if I were concerned about injury.

Let's face it, in general, grating on any grater is a perilous procedure. I can't count the number of times I have grated myself while using a standard box grater or other handheld grater. Having said this, it is my opinion that the Microplane is as safe to use as any other grater, definitely not inherently more hazardous and in my experience less hazardous.

To sum up, any aspiring gourmet and anyone who appreciates a quality tool that can make tedious chores easier should get the Microplane. ... Read more

For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. For ease in resting the grater on the counter while in use, there's a hard acrylic frame around the metal. The frame also prevents scratches to your countertop. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the slightly curved grating surface makes it easy to use with oddly shaped chunks of chocolate. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Technology, But Don't Buy This One!!
This is the first of two Microplane graters that I purchased, butthis choice received a lower 4* ranking. While this grater is from the standard line, the other is from the professional line. With many kitchen items the term 'professional' is just a hollow designation, but in this case it definitely matters!

All Microplane graters use the same basic technology for cutting -- technology which was originally developed for the woodworking industry but that has been adapted for exceptional service in the kitchen as well. Many others in this group have extolled the Microplane virtues, so I'll concentrate on helping you choose the best one . . . the professional!

Now, what makes the professional so much better? Well, the standard line has 3 major/minor flaws: 1) the easy-grip rubber handle tends to capture water when washed, 2) the plastic molded frame holding the grating surface cracks when washed in the dishwasher, & 3) the head is so incredibly sharp that it must be kept covered, yet there is no easy way to do this except for the original tagboard cover.

The professional version fixes all of these issues. The frame and hollow handle (no water capture points) are stainless steel which eliminates issues #1 & #2 and it also comes with a nice snap-on plastic cover to protect the sharp head surface which takes care of issue #3.I can find _no_ faults with this version.

End result: For an extra $5, BUY THE PROFESSIONAL MICROPLANE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well built - Effortless
I also bought the fine grater from this company. Both are great tools. They will grate mounds of cheese in no time and with no hand fatigue. I have little strenght in my hands, and I was a bit worried about getting a hand grater, rather than an electric. But this greaters are super sharp and do a great job with no effort. The attachment is recommended. For smaller pieces of cheese (or chocolate...) it will save your fingers. With so many poorly designed tools out there, it is a real pleasure to use one as well made as this! Highly recommended

With the range of options and sturdy structure of the Pro Grip Ultra Tower, you can grate a mound of mozzarella in no time flat. A comfortable grip ball on top keeps the grater steady and your supporting hand away from sharp edges. 1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
1) The shape makes it unstable on your counter so it moves around a lot.
2) small surface area, so it takes a lot longer to grate something
3) impossible to clean on the inside up at the top, making it a safety hazard
4) But, hey, it sure looks cool, huh?

Forget it; get one of those cheap, four-sided graters from the supermarket.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
Althought this grater has more style than most kitchen gadgets, it does not perform as well.It will grate anything you like, but it will take longer and your hands will hurt more.I find the classic, handle on top, four sided graters much easier and faster to use.Bottom line: for light grating, if you need some cheese grated once in a while it will function beautifuly, but for heavy duty every day use I do not recommend this item.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Looking but Hard to Clean
I thought this grater looked great out on the counter and it does shred ok.The problem is cleaning it.Cheese and the like tend to get stuck up at the top which makes it very difficult to clean. Also, the little plastic feet started to come off so it wasn't worth it to even keep it anymore and we just pitched it. ...
