Editorial Review

With top and bottom grills measuring 8 by 18, this family-sizeversion of the celebrated George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-ReducingGrilling Machine grills four burgers or chicken breasts, two bigsteaks, lots of taco or burrito fillings, or vegetables and seafood. The appliance's appeal lies in its simplicity and countertopconvenience--not to mention its fat-fighting ability. By grilling fromtop and bottom simultaneously, the 820-watt grill cuts cooking time tominutes. It also sears in grill marks, which not only look appetizingbut also contribute caramelized flavor. The bottom grill's deepchannels collect fat, and the grill is sloped so fat runs off into adishwasher-safe plastic tray (two are included) stationed under theunit's front. A floating hinge allows the top grill to rise and remainlevel, ensuring thick food cooks evenly.

Because the grill is nonstick, cleanup is a snap: all it needs is aquick scrape with a plastic spatula (included) and a wipe with a papertowel or a sponge. Overall, the grill measures 8-1/2 inches wide, 6inches high, and 10 inches deep, weighs 5.8 pounds, and is clad inhard, gleaming, white plastic for a sleek appearance. The instructionbooklet includes recipes. --Fred Brack ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Product
When the Mrs came home with one of these things - I thought to myself, "great, something else we can add to our museum of unused kitchen appliances. There's a spot for it next to the cusinart."
This time I was wrong. Throw a slab of meat in, and presto - perfect juicy, sans grease.I'm actually eating better, and sticking to South Beach Diet due to this.Fresh ground turkey, throw in some olives, sliced mushrooms.Grease and fat drains right out. I find I use this far more often than the frying pan. It's just better for certain types of foods. It cooks food evenly and is never greasy. Some say it's hard to clean but I disagee. It's no where near a bad as a dirty, sticky pan.

It also has a great build quality.Simple but terrific product. The exception to the infomercial = junk rule.Ranks higher than the microwave in my book.Every kitchen needs one.

5-0 out of 5 stars No doubt...AWESOME
I bought this grill 3 to 4 yrs ago and it is just now starting to wear.We use it consstantly as it is the most convenient appliance out there. In todays society where we want everything fast this is no exception.Burgers in 4 min. I couldn't believe it till I did it.I now have to find what size and style I want for my new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable, will get a lot of use!
I have had my George Foreman grill for over five years. The signature and logo have worn off the top, but other than that the grill is in terrific condition, especially considering the wear it gets from me. I use it almost daily, and have never been disappointed. It makes the best tasting bacon I've had, crisp and not greasy - and very difficult to overcook and burn like I frequently do when cooking bacon in a skillet. I can fit about four burgers on here, and they cook evenly and quickly. Chicken breasts are a snap, especially when chopping up for a salad or pasta.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are quick and tasty(add a little precooked bacon, and you've got a terrific, albeit high cholesterol, lunch) and my grandmother likes to make grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches on it. I often make pork chops with just a little salt and pepper, and they always cook perfectly. Sausages are terrific too.

I think the nicest part for me is that it is very difficult to overcook or burn anything. It also cooks very evenly.

Cleanup is very easy, just wipe it down with a warm dishcloth after it cools and toss the grease collector in the dishwasher. ... Read more

Washing and drying leafy vegetables has never been simpler or more fun than with this gadget. One hand is all you need to press the soft, cushioned knob to start the spinning; when the built-in brake is applied and the job is done, the basket and bowl can be taken apart and used separately. The knob locks down for easy storage, and the spinner is dishwasher-safe. Use this tool with lettuce, raw spinach, broad-leafed herbs, and greens--they end up clean and oh-so-dry, and the drier your leaves, the better salad dressings will adhere and the less mushy your sandwich bread will become. Puddles at the bottom of your salad bowl disappear... Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay...
I'm still looking for the perfect salad spinner. I had this one and broke it after trying to take the lid apart to try to clean under the lid--don't attempt that! I didn't like how this one had a domed lid so you couldn't stack stuff on top of it. I also found that the interior of the basket wasnt smooth but a bumpy basket weave so little bits of lettuce get stuck in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great until it broke
This was a wonderful salad spinner for the several months it worked. Then it broke. In my kitchen, very few things break. The occasional wooden spatula after fifteen years of use is fine but things tend not to break unless I drop them. This is my second Oxo product that broke while I was using it (the other one was a knife--yes, a knife snapped in two while I was cutting).I still love my Oxo peeler but with two out of three of my Oxo products breaking, I'm done with Oxo for the most part.

1-0 out of 5 stars worked well until it exploded
I bought this item and used it for about 2 months, then It exploded while I was spinning a salad and was impossible to repair. I went on to buy a Tupperware salad spinner (green) and have been using it for four years with no problems at all. ... Read more

American Heart Association Quick & Easy Cookbook

Spiral-bound (20 April, 1998)
list price: $17.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

It's easy to fall into high-fat, fast-food habits when we're busy, and who isn't busy? The American Heart Association has a solution: 200 recipes that are tasty, healthful, low-fat, and fast. The recipes--conveniently spiral-bound--take 20 minutes or less preparation time, and most take just a few minutes of additional cooking time. (Some require more cooking time, but you don't have to hover over them.) Don't skip breakfast when you can make Cinnamon-Bran Pancakes (total time: 11 to 14 minutes), Stuffed French Toast (16 to 18 minutes), or a Banana-Kiwi Breakfast Shake (5 minutes) in less time than it takes to pick up a muffin on your way to work. Your family or guests won't guess you whipped up dinner in a hurry when you make Pasta-Crusted Fish with Marinara Sauce (15 minutes), Sherried Seafood Sauté (15 minutes), or Skillet Chicken Thighs with Dried Berries (20 minutes). The book has an assortment of one-dish meals like Salmon and Brown Rice Bake, Black Bean Lasagna, and Chicken with Broccoli and Bulgur. There are also appetizers, vegetables, breads, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. All recipes include preparation time, cooking time, and nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, and sodium. Yummy photographs decorate the book. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book before you need it!
My young husband had a heart a attack and with a new baby we have plenty of motivation to eat heart healthy.Someone bought this book for us and we cook from it every night. The recipies are easy, with few, easily found ingredients and tasty too.We are buying them for all of our family for Christmas - last year we sent them steaks!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
I have to give it 4 stars because it doesn't have any pictures. I am basically a picture person - I like to see what the end result should look like.

I have tried other low fat cook books before and have been alittle disappointed with them all. I found only a few recipes that I ended up liking and still occasionally use. I tried have tried 5 recipes from this book so far, and so far they have been very good.

The recipes have plenty of seasoning in them so they don't taste bland. And some of the recipes are common sense ones that use the old rule of substitution ie - instead of oil use apple sauce, instead of sour cream use fat free yogurt etc.

In any case this book is definately a good buy at a good price. I would definately recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD AND HELPFUL BOOK
After my husband suffered a heart attack 4 months ago, I became very interested in finding tasty ways to cooked good food for us. I immediately went online and found this book and ordered it. I was hoping to at least find a recipe or two I could use. I was amazed at how many recipes sounded good and tasted even better. I did not have to look any farther for any other cookbook. I now have at least 10 or 12 meals that I can prepare and feel very satisfied. The greatest part of all is that all of the recipes are very quick and easy. They can usually all be prepared after I get home from work and we are now eating better than we have every eaten. My husband and I only wish that it didn't take a heart attack for us to find this recipe book. I highly recommend this recipe book for anyone who are looking for good and tasty food that just happens to be good for you. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you're a Weight Watcher, this collection of 500 recipes in a handy loose-leaf binder could put you in the fast lane on the road to success. This cookbook is designed for Weight Watchers' 1•2•3 Success program: points are assigned to foods based on fat, fiber, and calories, and your daily point allowance is based on your current weight. So you can eat what you want, as long as you don't go over your allotted points. The better your food choices, the more you can eat before you run out of points.

Recipes are varied and cover the whole gamut: sauces; breads; soups; meat, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees; pasta; vegetable, grain, and potato side dishes; and, of course, desserts. The recipes are more healthful but not drastically different from foods you and your family enjoy now. Many are familiar comfort foods, such as Pizza, Oven "Fried" Chicken, Beef Stew, Tuna Noodle Casserole, Chocolate Layer Cake, and Cheesecake.Internationally inspired favorites include Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Orange-Flavored Fajitas, Moo Shu Chicken, Tandoori Haddock, and Senegalese Peanut Soup. The nutritional breakdown for each recipe is more complete than in most cookbooks, and includes calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, calcium, and Weight Watchers' points. --Joan Price ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cookbook
This book is the one I use over and over again, I've made so many recipes from it.These recipes do not taste like "diet" food. Although they are low in fat, calories, and food points, they really taste good too. Some favorites I make regularly from this book are the Parmesan-Turkey Meatloaf, Shrimp Creole, Tuna-Noodle Casserole, Chicken Avgolemono Soup, Indian Carrot Soup, Hummus, and our absolute favorite - the Chicken Quesadillas with Corn-Tomato Salad. I brought the Rolled Orange Sponge Cake to a family gathering and everyone devoured it - no one would have guessed it only had 2 grams of fat per serving.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a great all-around sourcebook for all kinds of healthy low-fat recipes that taste great and fit into a Weight Watchers plan or even anyone who is just looking for good, nutritious meals. The book is well laid out and has an excellent variety of reliable recipes. It's easy to read and browse through, has an adequate amount of photos, and contains all the nutrition information and points for each recipe.

Chicago Metallic Professional Nonstick Meatloaf Insert & 9 1/2" Loaf Pan
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $24.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

If you've adopted a healthy, low-fat diet, you're probably not regularly serving your family large chunks of fatty ground chuck, but if meatloaf is a dinnertime standby in your household, this two-piece pan set will render your loaves less artery clogging. The main component in this set is a basic, nonstick 5-1/2-by-10-1/2-inch bread or loaf pan. A basic pan, however, according to Chicago Metallic standards, means a rugged, perfectly rectangular bakeware product with a top-quality SilverStone finish. The top pan is a metal sieve with U-shaped handles that fits over the lower pan. Fat and oil drain through the sieve holes, resulting in a firm, still juicy yet less greasy loaf. Recommended for use with nonmetal utensils. Do not expose the pan to temperatures over 550 degrees F. --Carol Gnojewski ... Read more

This pan lived up to its billing in all but one respect -- I don't think you could quite get a 3lb meatloaf into the thing, 2lbs or 2-1/4lbs maybe.Other than that nitpic though, the design works well for draining away the grease as you cook (especially important if you mix in any ground pork or sausage as some recipes call for). The non-stick surfaces make cleanup pretty easy too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get into the kitchen with this book!
I have several of the last Cooking Light Annual Recipes books, and I have cooked many delicious, successful recipes out of them. Don't let the idea of "light" cooking scare you... it has never been CL's methodology to present food with fewer calories and fat while sacrificing the flavor and appeal. If you want to experience the way America *should* eat-- healthily, but with great pleasure-- then these recipes are the real deal.

You may never cook all of the recipes in the book, but if you even complete a percentage, you will have gotten your money's worth out of it, rest assured. The recipes are well-rounded in terms of flavor, nutrient balance, fair portion size, appearance, and nutrition.

While I don't mind the lack of photos, it's true that others might find that a problem. All I can say is "Don't let it hold you back. Get annoyed, then get into the kitchen!"

I suspect that in order to present this great collection of recipes in any sort of economical way, the photographic content had to be cut down. I applaud this move myself... cost is a legitimate factor in deciding how badly I want the book.

You'd be better off keeping that money to spend on the wonderful ingredients that you'll find yourself buying... and learning about. That being said, there are also plenty of good-old traditional-ingredient recipes if you aren't into new things.

But the way I see it, the 'hunter-seeker' in you should delight in the adventure of the ingredient search, the assembling of the 'weapons' in the kitchen, and later... the wonderful aromas and the smiling faces as the dish is served. So... get into the kitchen!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Cooking Light cook book!
I've been a subscriber to Cooking Light magazine for severalyears now and I still love it. I got the 2005 book as gift and added it to my Cooking Light collection. The photographs in the book are beautiful and mouth-watering, but there are not enough (I like to see what the final product looks like when I am cooking). I do like that the nutritional information including calories, fat, protein, carb, fiber are listed for each recipe. I do find that many of the recipes have a long prep time and this a deterrent for me at this busy stage in my life. For the "true" chef, though, there will be no problem and the recipes will be wonderful to make. Generally, the ingredients are readily available, but for some of the recipes, there are ingredients that I have no idea where to buy them. The book is organzied by month--like the magazine. Really, overall, a beautiful book.Oh!I did make the cover recipe--it is REALLY GOOD!

Want to cut the fat--and the calories--from the roasting juices of your Thanksgiving turkey before you make gravy? How about defatting that beef-and-barley soup? For those and other big chores, you need a sizable separator, like this one. Just pour the liquid (up to five cups at a time) into the separator, let the fats rise to the top, and then pour the good stuff into another container from the spout that draws from the separator's bottom. The layer of fat stays behind in the separator. Other uses: The separator is gauged in cups and milliliters, so it can be used to measure liquids. It's also tall enough (5-3/8 inches) and attractive enough to double as a pitcher. --Fred Brack ... Read more

I make homemade stocks a lot, so having a good separater that can handle a large quantity is really useful. This one works well, and thanks to its design, it cleans up easily in the dishwasher. I have another one with a very thin spout and I have to wash it by hand if I let it sit at all after using it because the dishwasher jets can't seem to get into its narrow opening; it's a real pain. I do not have that problem with this design.

To answer another reviewers' question on plasic vs. glass separaters -- I had a glass one and it broke despite being touted as heat resistant glass. When I poured hot gravy into it last Thanksgiving, the glass went flying everywhere as it broke right in my hand! Admittedly, that was an older one and perhaps the newer glass versions are more rugged when it comes to heat. But I just don't have that worry using a plastic one. I'm not an industrial designer, but given the way that plastic is made at exceptionally high heat, I am not aware of any health implications regarding pouring warm liquids into plastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars microwave safe
There are different kind of plastics.
This is made of durable and translucent lexan and it is microwave and dishwasher safe.
Plus it does not break if it falls down. It is safer than using glass. It was rated number one gravy separator in a well recognized U.S. magazine.
I'm very proud of this product because I am the manufacturer.

Steven Raichlen's Healthy Latin Cooking : 200 Sizzling Recipes from Mexico, Cuba, Caribbean, Brazil, and Beyond

Editorial Review

Steven Raichlen brings the best of his culinary world to Healthy Latin Cooking: he absolutely loves Latin flavors, from Mexico to Argentina, from Cuba to Puerto Rico, and he is dedicated to a healthy diet that's low in fat yet high in flavor. (His High-Flavor, Low-Fat Cooking series is a must, as is his Miami Spice.)

Raichlen doesn't just drop the unwary cook into chapters of recipes that have been altered to reduce fat and salt and all the other nastiness. He begins with all the reasons for doing just that, and the many ways in which the true Latin diet is perfectly suited to a healthy pyramid approach. Nor does he shy away from truth, beauty, and justice, stating categorically that there are some dishes where lard just can't be left out of the flavor profile. He goes on, however, to show the reader how to cut way back on the total amount of lard used while retaining its great flavor.

Chapters are divided by kinds of food--appetizers, soups, salads, beans, and rice--not by place of origin. So it's kind of a Latin adventure to flip through this book, never knowing where you are going to land. There are Little Pots of Red Beans with Sour Cream from Nicaragua (140 calories per serving), Chicken and Vegetable Stew from Colombia (374 calories), Tamales from Mexico and from Cuba (163 versus 120 calories), Seafood Stew from Brazil (345 calories), Stuffed Pot Roast from Puerto Rico (533 calories), and flan from everywhere (423 calories). Steven Raichlen gives the reader a great way to spice up a diet, and a great diet to help life last a long, pleasurable time. --Schuyler Ingle ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much processed food and too little taste
I have to be one of the dissenters on this book.I have the 1,000 series Indian, Mexican, and Italian and all are wonderful. This one however is headed for my local used book trader.

There is no imagination in this book.I feel that the author just doesn't like food. She makes no effort to impart any taste what so ever in the recipes.Plus the approach uses lots of processed foods; things like egg substitutes, low-fat everything, and canned goods galore.I personally feel that it's possible to eat a fairly low fat diet, avoid processed foods (which I think are just as harmful as the fat), and actually have something that tastes good.

Plus the author must have taken to heart that you can't have any meat other than chicken or fish. Now I know that many cuts of beef can be high in fat, but an occasional, well seasoned, portion controlled, lean piece of beef isn't going to totally ruin your diet. But not so here.If it's not chicken, poultry, or fish; you can forget it.(And whatever happened to pork, the other white meat?)

Shop around, there are better low-fat books to be had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rely on this cookbook
I took a cooking class from Terry back in the 1980's (Brookline Adult Education) and have been relying on her recipes ever since. I bought this book as soon as I found out about it. I use it for my weekly menu planning and could not do without it.I'm thinking of buying another copy because my current one is falling apart!

I can't begin to list all of the recipes I use in this cookbook. After all this time, I'm still finding new ones that I really like. One of my favorites is the seafood gumbo. Another is chicken and rice. Her chicken kabobs can be prepared really quickly and taste wonderful. I make her corn muffins all the time. The list really is endless.

Thank you Terry so much for this cookbook!
