Tanto Tempo Remixes Average Customer Review: Audio CD (16 October, 2001) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $16.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bebel Gilbertoappears to be the figurehead of 21st-century bossa nova, so it's only fittingshe should be the subject of one of the biggest 21st-century trends, the remix. But when the remixes are done as well as this, it actually adds to the originalalbum. Her languid, sensual vocals are still the cornerstone, but Rae &Christian's more upbeat take on "Bananeira" propels the song to the dance floor, while Trüby Trioevoke the shantytown favelas, home of samba, on the percussive "SemContencao." A couple of the tracks might seem more like limpSade than tropical Bebel, but for the most part there's plenty of invention occurring, as withDa Lata's gorgeousinterpretation of "August Day Song." In addition to all of the aforementioned,King Britt, Ananda Project, and 4hero are among the studio whizzes who lendtheir high-profile talents to Gilberto, making Tanto Tempo intosomething reborn. --Chris Nickson ... Eighteenth Street Lounge Soundtracks - Jet Society Average Customer Review: Audio CD (30 November, 1999) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Falling loosely under the rubric of the '90s lounge/exotica craze--specifically the revival of interest in bossa nova, samba, and Brazilian-inflected jazz-funk styles--this CD culls a consistently interesting set of tracks from a widespread network of musicians and record labels. Although some of the artists actually hail from Brazil, others are spreading the good word from France, Italy, and even Norway. Portugal's Nortesul Records starts the collection with a delicately beautiful song from singer Teresa, and the perfect balance of solid groove and chanteuse vocals hits a peak with the Tom y Joyce track "Vai Minha Tristeza", one of several tracks from performers associated with France's Yellow Productions. Italy's Nicola Conte's "Bossa per Due" combines organ, guitar, and wordless singing with a little sitar and synthesizer, swooping into a breezy four minutes. Also from Italy, representing the Irma Records stable, the Cordara Orchestra presents the CD's title track, a gently melancholy instrumental that has early '70s sit-com written all over it--you can just see Jack Klugman or Mary Tyler Moore having a pensive walk in the park after some minor and not irreversible emotional defeat. Overall, the mix of rhythmic complexity, emotional cool, and a slightly kitschy sensibility will satisfy aficionados and may pleasantly surprise newcomers. --Bob Bannister ... Teresa's "Lisboa A Noite" is my favorite track. Check out Pink Martini if you dig this sound. "Hi-Fi Trumpet" has a great latin feel, with a few flute, trumpet & vocal bits to spice things. "Seasons" offers up some retro-modern funk. Organs, jazzy flutes & funky guitars jam as a breathy female voice says "hey, wake up." Unfortunately, by the time you've made a dent in the tracklist, you may do just the opposite. Tracks 7-9 don't quite jive with the others and are worth skipping. In fact, the rest of the album drags until you near the tail end of the disc, at which point the sophisticated jazz-funk of "Cinnamon & Clove II" will perk you up and leave you hungry for more. Sorry to say, there's only one track left for you after "Cinnamon & Clove II," and that's the title track. In addition to the dull bits near the end, bossa fans may be annoyed to find Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" on this album. Featured on 18 different discs, and a few television commercials, this song (though enjoyable on the first few listens) has grown repetetive and I'm downright sick of hearing it on every compilation I own. All flaws aside, "Jet Society" is a great compilation, and an essential for those unfamiliar with the budding lounge revival. As the cover booklet states, "these songs suggest a world that can only exist in our imaginations." Pick up a copy of "Jet Society" and escape to your own unique world.

Getz/Gilberto Average Customer Review: Audio CD (20 May, 1997) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan. Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit. His lines, at once decisive and evanescent, focus the rest of the group's performance without overpowering. A classic. --Fernando Gonzalez ... Read more Features Reviews (115)

A Funk Odyssey Average Customer Review: Audio CD (11 September, 2001) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review After scoring the crossover hit "Virtual Insanity" in 1998(remember the moving sidewalk video?), the U.K.'s Jamiroquai failed tokeep their momentum alive with the somewhat scattered and skittishSynkronized.Thankfully for fans of the retro (if lightweight) pop/soul that is theband's specialty, Jamiroquai are back with their most cohesive effortsince 1995's Return ofthe Space Cowboy. There's still too much blathering on aboutthe cosmos from StevieWonder-inspired vocalist Jason Kay, the most egregious example being thesubdued and folksy "Black Crow," which takes the bird-in-flightcliché to new lows. Better and much more rugged are the sizzlingsynth-driven "2001" and the guitar-stoked rave-up "Stop! Don't Panic."That's where the guys bring the funk with more bite than you'd expect.--Amy Linden ... Read more Reviews (94)

Manolo Blahnik Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 September, 2000) list price: $50.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik creates the most sought-after shoes in the world. On a supermodel, a Manolo Blahnik shoe completes the perfect ensemble; placed on a pedestal, it becomes a minor art object. Colin McDowell's Manolo Blahnik attempts to capture the genuine excitement generated by Blahnik's creations. It is only partly successful. The breathy writing style never rises above fashion-magazine gossip, though the shoes themselves extend beyond fashion into art and sculpture--even metaphysical meaning. The maestro never puts a foot wrong. The finest materials, gorgeous color, and a sense of the theatrical combine in elegant originals that consistently surprise. We are told that, besides their whimsicality and sexiness, his shoes are extremely comfortable and well made. Blahnik, "sculptor and engineer," carves each wooden last himself, normally from beech, and supervises the Italian workshops that turn his designs into treasures. His originality may be explained by his lack of formal training, but it is also clear that Blahnik's success is founded on hard work, eccentricity, and boundless energy. The book's photographs and the designer's drawings (especially effective) present the shoes as formal objects in settings replete with rose petals and fashion-photographer textures. As a glimpse into the mechanics of the world of high fashion, Manolo Blahnik works well. Readers interested in contemporary culture, celebrities, and the master's thoughts on toe cleavage and other mysteries will rave about it. --John Stevenson ... Read more Reviews (6)
The photos were disappointing. Those of us with shoe obsessions won't be satisfied with this book. The shoes shown aren't original; the manner in which they are shown isn't either. Perhaps I was too hungry for something as original as Manolo.

Oggi 1-Liter "Dial-A-Drink" Cocktail Shaker, Stainless Steel Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review With the intense admiration most people have for martinis and other classic cocktails, you shouldn't be without a cocktail shaker if you really want to entertain--and this shaker is really cool. Running around the edge of the stainless steel cup are the names of 15 cocktails, ranging from a perfectly respectable Whisky Sour to a, ahem, Between the Sheets (brandy, curaçao, dry gin, lemon juice, and ice). Not your style? Turn the outer cup and peruse the ingredients for Gin Rickey, an Orange Blossom, or an Old-Fashioned. Whatever drink is called for, pour all the ingredients (including the fruit) into the shaker. After a few good shakes, remove the top knob to reveal a built-in strainer. Pour the drink into a chilled glass and enjoy. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more Features Reviews (8)
Out of the box, it was a little clumsy. The sheath with the holes cut in it fits pretty loosely, and is secured only near the base. That meant it wobbled a little in my hands when I was holding it, which was kinda annoying -- not criminally unpleasant, but irritating, and if I'd been using it all night, it might have led to spillage if you know what I mean. But then I used this thing twice, maybe three times, before the metal sheath with the holes cut in it pulled free of the shaker body. That was irritating -- it looks kinda goofy like that, and it's difficult to make any use of the recipes at this point. The capacity is great -- it's perfect for a bunch of guests. And the look is pretty good, even without the sheath, if you're not close enough to notice the writing. I continue to use it, but it doesn't sit on my countertop longer than it takes to get washed, and it's now a "behind the bar" toy. At 4.5 stars, I expected much better. ... Riedel Vinum Martini Glasses, Set of 6 Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $120.00 -- our price: $83.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Yeah, in retrospect it probably was wishful thinking to hope that Riedel--the Austrian glassworks whose innovations in stemware shape and design have enabled serious wine drinkers to get more bang from their Bordeaux, more Shiraz pizzazz --could work alcoholic alchemy on the martini. They can shorten the bowl of one glass so Sauvignon Blanc hits the tongue just so, broaden the mouth of the Burgundy stem to accentuate the dusty fruit nose, flare the lip of a singlemalt whiskey vessel to disperse floral notes. Yet even Riedel's model 416/77, with its classically elegant conical cocktail styling, can't scrub the bathtub ring off of a cheap gin. They make a little jewel of a martini glass, but not even Riedel can make a Sapphire from cubic zirconia booze. --Tony Mason ... Read more Features Reviews (4)
As these are crystal, be careful washing them.Abrasive scrubby pads, the dishwasher, or even gritty towels will leave them scratched. Martini tip I learned at my current job's cocktail parties:Dip the glasses in water and freeze in the freezer.Freeze your favorite gin (or vodka or whatever) in the freezer (the aim is to make it viscous when poured).Chill the vermouth and olives (or twist) in the fridge. When ready to serve, drop in olive, then vermouth (to cover the olive in my opinion, but it's your call) and finally gin.Stir (the classic technique, despite James Bond's heresy) and voila, a perfectly chilled martini with a minimum of hassle.

Jubilee Acrylic Martini Picks, Set of 6 Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $9.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review A martini wouldn't be a martini without an olive garnish--and what better way to pick the olive than with an acrylic pick that sports a mini martini glass with its own olive! The little plastic cocktail sits atop the pick, giving the stick both balance and aesthetic appeal. The pick is just the right length for stirring and rests neatly in the glass for all to see. And for those who don't care for olives, there's finally a perfect cover-up. --Marcela Broussard ... I have a few sets that I love.I considered buying them for a friend as well...but he doenst usually drink classis martinis.I just thought the whole *olive theme* might be out of place in an apple martini...or a melon martini etc. I don't think you can go wrong with these, for the price.
With a little imagination we've found many other uses for them as well - for hors d'oeuvres, dipping berries in sugar, etc. Their design fits well with a formal table or more casual dining.Handsome and handy, I'd say! ... Read more Asin: B00004SW3J |

The Best 50 Martinis (Best 50) Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 March, 1999) list price: $5.95 -- our price: $5.35 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
The recipes here are good, but standard...nothing to warrent an entire book, really. It would look attractive, tho, as part of a gift set...so its kind of a mixed bag. If your looking for a book for yourself...a first martini book with recipes, tips, sayings and martini lore, go with the other one i mentioned.
This books is very small, flimsy and posseses a lot less than than can be found at a basic drink website....the book is cheap BUT it is worth about $2, thats it.In looking through this book, I felt like I could have put together something better written, more informative, and thorough in about 2 hours sitting at the computer. There are some good recipes in the book but most of them are variations of the same martini.I would recommend skipping this book and buying one of the other drink/martini books that cost a few $ more. ...
