Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $39.99

    Editorial Review

With the intense admiration most people have for martinis and other classic cocktails, you shouldn't be without a cocktail shaker if you really want to entertain--and this shaker is really cool. Running around the edge of the stainless steel cup are the names of 15 cocktails, ranging from a perfectly respectable Whisky Sour to a, ahem, Between the Sheets (brandy, curaçao, dry gin, lemon juice, and ice). Not your style? Turn the outer cup and peruse the ingredients for Gin Rickey, an Orange Blossom, or an Old-Fashioned. Whatever drink is called for, pour all the ingredients (including the fruit) into the shaker. After a few good shakes, remove the top knob to reveal a built-in strainer. Pour the drink into a chilled glass and enjoy. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

    2-0 out of 5 stars QUESTION.PLEASE ANSWER
Ok...so this isnt a review, but a question I have on this product. Where is the instruction manual to this thing? What do the lines above the alcohol names mean. There are two, three, even four lines above some of the alcohol names. Does it mean the amount of alcohol that is supposed to be put into that particular drink. Please answer...for it has left many of us flustered. thank you very much

1-0 out of 5 stars I've given up
Despite this being a wedding gift from my brother, I've given up on it.It has become nearly impossible to open!Several people have spilled drinks trying to pry it open.I like it, but it simply doesn't work, and it makes you look like a fool when guests are waiting for their drinks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Things fall apart
I hate to be the voice of disappointment, because I had high hopes for this critter. But I'm a little disappointed.

Out of the box, it was a little clumsy. The sheath with the holes cut in it fits pretty loosely, and is secured only near the base. That meant it wobbled a little in my hands when I was holding it, which was kinda annoying -- not criminally unpleasant, but irritating, and if I'd been using it all night, it might have led to spillage if you know what I mean.

But then I used this thing twice, maybe three times, before the metal sheath with the holes cut in it pulled free of the shaker body. That was irritating -- it looks kinda goofy like that, and it's difficult to make any use of the recipes at this point.

The capacity is great -- it's perfect for a bunch of guests. And the look is pretty good, even without the sheath, if you're not close enough to notice the writing. I continue to use it, but it doesn't sit on my countertop longer than it takes to get washed, and it's now a "behind the bar" toy.

At 4.5 stars, I expected much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It has enhanced our ability to spend money on alcohol
This is a beautiful book with wonderful photographs. It is well written full of delightful stories behind the drinks. There are definitely interesting and different cocktails included, but already the book has been worth the price as we have had two incredible winners (Chambord Kamikaze & Pink Lemonade) with two tries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pull out your best barware....
I got this book a couple of years ago for cocktail ideas for New Years Eve, but I find myself reaching for it time and time again. This book is perfect for the entertainer who is tired of serving rum and cokes or vodka tonics. I WOW'ed a whole boat of thirsty sailors last summer by showing up with a jug full of Bolo's Pomegranate Sangria (and they are STILL talking about it). This summer I took Bolo's White Peach Sangria recipe and substituted champagne for the ultimate dico party refreshment! And as far as the Cosmopolitans with their sugar and orange zested rims, let's just say that this book has made my batches infamous around my circle of friends! And the book goes on to include some of my personal bar favorites such as the Oatmeal Cookie and Lemon Drops (or try the Komikaze made with Chambord!).

Keep in mind that this book is a collection of exotic and famous concoctions from bartenders across the country. These are elegant, top notch cocktails to be served in your best barware for your favorite friends. So sure, there are recipes that have some odd ingredients (yes, it IS difficult to find pomegranate juice at your local grocery) but with savvy you can make some small substitutions and still come out a winner. This book will get you experimenting and serving something other than bloody marys at your next brunch! Have fun with these!!

(On an odd side note, I did go to Carbo's here in Atlanta and asked them for their "Just Peachy" cocktail that they invented, and well, they had no idea what I was talking about. I just had to go home and make one myself!!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Eye Candy But Hard to Swallow
A book so lovely it seems more appropriate on a coffee table than behind a bar.Recipies can be odd:ingredients for one cocktail includes sea urchin and wasabi, another combines Baileys and Jagermeister. With fiftyrecipies, this is not the definitive bible on mixology. If you are lookingfor a primer, try the "Harvard Student Agencies BartendingCourse"; if you want beauty and drink history, try"Cocktail" by Paul Harrington.Nonetheless, "New ClassicCocktails" does succeed in a few areas. It is seductively beautifulin its photography and it offers up truly unique concoctions. If you'renot afraid to add chocolate to a martini, it's a worthwhile addition toyour reference collection. ... Spiegelau's Vino Grande series of glasses is part of a connoisseur line designed with the characteristics of each beverage in mind. 5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant Highball Glasses
It looks very elegant with 4/5 full of iced beverage in the sunny afternoon kitchen. It feels so good while holding the glass and chatting with friends. The distinguish quality has captured every guest in the house. The size is just right for such occasions.

    3-0 out of 5 stars "GRANDE" = NOT-SO-GRANDE
The glasses arrived today in a large box, which I opened and was shocked to see another smaller box inside..... The glasses are disappointingly small. The quality appears to be good, and the design is appealing. If these glasses were just a little bigger (say 13-16 ounces) I'd rate them at 5 stars. I'm only keeping them because of the other glasses I ordered as a package deal that got me a GREAT price........

5-0 out of 5 stars a whole can of soda fits in one of these!
I have to disagree with the last person, the glasses are not too small. They are just not over-sized.I just poured a whole can of soda into one of them.I've had them for a while (at least two year), and really love them.Unfortunately, i noticed that one of them has chipped - but that's after extensive use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide
Look no further... this is the guide you will want handy at all of your parties. It is well organized and has very clear directions. Don't pass this up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guide for Bartending 20 Years Ago
This guide has an astounding number of drink recepies, leading to the impression that were you to familiarize yourself with this guide you would know how to make virtually every drink that someone would ask you for.Unfortunately, this is not true as the guide is severely lacking on drinks that have become popular in more recent years, especially among younger people.Your grandfather may be content with this guide, but anyone in their 20's or early 30's is certain to find that several of their favorite drinks are lacking.

That aside, the book isn't a poor starter for someone who is just beginning. It has good advice on setting up a bar even if it is a little outdated, providing references to equipment that is no longer quite so commonly used.

The book claims to be "America's Favorite Drink Mixing Guide" and while it may be the most widely sold guide, I'd venture to say that many of those who purchase it are quite disappointed and reference it a lot less frequently that they envisioned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Living on Reputation
The 65th hard-cover edition of Mr. Boston would not rate a grade of "C" in any journalism class that I could imagine. Time-Warner did not spend enough money in editing (and re-write) to catch that the Introduction still refers to the book as the 64th edition. All-in-all, Amazon should not offer such a piece of junk.

One might say that well there may be silght errors, the book has everything. In fact, Time-Warner sub-titles the book as "Official Bartender's and Party Guide" and further offers the comment "A Best Seller Since 1935..." Well, your favorite cake may have all the ingredients - butter, flour, sugar, eggs, etc. but if the mix is not done properly and if the cake time/temperature is not correct, well...

And, I can't say it contains all the ingredients. For one, there is no listing for a Vodka Martini. My bartenter acquantainces say this has been the most popular martini for several years.

My suggestion is to stay away from Mr. Boston. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If you tend to echo the words of actor Joe Don Baker in Mitchell--when asked, "How do you like your Scotch?" he replied, "By the quart"--then the Riedel Vinum series single malt whiskey glass may not be your cup of Teaninich. Not so for fans of small-batch Bourbons and other nonblended whiskies: with its flared lip and wide tulip-shaped bowl atop the circular base, this vessel is designed to direct its contents to flavor-friendly areas of the mouth and nose. The underlying theory of all Riedel stemware states that the tongue is divided into four zones, each recognizing either sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, or acidity; by changing the size and shape of the glass, Riedel can accentuate wine's and spirits' positives while mitigating negatives. Unlike the traditional brandy snifter, which concentrates the alcoholic vapors and burns out the shnoz, the lip of the single malt glass disperses them, allowing you to enjoy the subtleties, whether your drink be Speyburn or sour mash. --Tony Mason ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Count Me a Believer
Don't know the exact reason why, but these are the best I've tried--far better than brandy snifters--for tasting the full complexity of a good spirit. Not just single malts but blended Scotch, bourbon, even aged rum.If you don't like the taste in these glasses, then you should change your choice of alcohol.Or dump it into a highball glass, cover with Seven-Up and top with a cherry and umbrella.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riedel Glasses
I like good bourbon (Jack Daniels Single Barrel) and have found out that it tastes even better from these Riedel glasses. It is remarkable to take a taste test; it is almost unbelievable. We also have Riedel wine glasses which we enjoy as well. Riedel is a good value for people who enjoy good booze.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great glass
I only drink bourbon and I found the riedel glasses to enhance the enjoyment of my favorite spirit over just using a shot glass. You spend quite a bit on some of the better bottlings, so why not drink in style and and get the most enjoyment out of it. They are a good buy and with amazons shipping you'll get them faster with less expense. ... Read more

I order four of these, but they sent me ASIN: B0000959GD (Pedrini Black & Satin Shot Glass), instead. The boxes were improperly labeled in the warehouse.I took a refund, rather than try to fight the goliath that is Amazon's distribution system.I don't recommend ordering this, unless you're willing to accept the other product.

It took a month and a half for this item to arrive.
It doesn't look anything like the one in the picture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nice but I wish I had bought a different one
I bought this based upon the reviews that said it didn't leak. They are wrong. I have used it three times and it leaks when you shake it. If I had bought it at Target, it would be returned. Kohls has one with a gasket. I would buy that one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stylish but Lacking in Functionality
I got this thing out of the box and was really impressed with it's looks but the fun stopped there. While I was checking my nice little chrome shaker out I tilted it to the side and the top proceeded to fall off.Worried, I put some ice and a bit of simulated gin (H20) inside, gave it a few shakes and it leaked everywhere.Good thing this wasnt real gin! I dont know if this is just mine but I wasnt impressed with the the functionality.Going with Oneida.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant in its Simplicity
This shaker will bring out the dashing martini or margarita drinker in just about anyone.Looking to impress chicks with your suave mastery of the bar - this will do the trick. Looks great, chills drinks, and of course goes well with cool glassware (invest in Martini glasses or margarita glasses). You don't have to worry about spillage and the built in strainer makes any drink easy. Now if I just had a cool tray to put all of this stuff on. Seriously though, it's a great addition and will make you more likely to tinker with what's in your bar, as opposed to reaching for yet another beer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A work of art........
I enjoy dipping into this book for the beautiful photography as much as the cocktail recipes. The antique glasses and nostalgic shots of a bygone era make it a memorable read.I just wish the book had been made with a sturdier cover - mine has already started disintegrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photographs!
A very cool book with some exceptional photographs of different drinks. There's not much explanation on preparing the different drinks other than the obvious ingredients, plus there's only 100 drinks listed. What makes this book special are the photographs. If you're a bartender or just an enthusiast that wants to serve impressive looking cocktails, this book gives you a lot of ideas. As any good chef will tell you, "it's all in the presentation."

It's too bad the book is softcover, plus it would've been nice if the photos were a little larger (they're about 7" x 5").It's nice to keep around for guests to see, though.Makes you thirsty. There's a few sample photographs here on this site.Check em out to see what I mean.

    Hope my review helped!

I just got this book, and really, I love it. Allright it only has 100 cocktails in it, but if you are planning on making more than a hundred different cocktails you can always buy another book, probably it wont be as nice to look in but hey, you wanted recepies right. Still I think it is a very nice book to have, because it's just nice to look in and it has the nececary instructions on makeing all those wonderfull cocktails yourself. And it also gives a nice picture of what the cocktail could look like, gets your tastebuds more ready than just plain text. ... Read more

    list price: $29.99

    Editorial Review

The margarita, a classic Mexican thirst quencher, shouldn't be served in just any glass. As with many cocktails, the right glass enhances the experience, from the visual presentation to the flavor of the drink. These margarita glasses have a wide top, so the rim holds plenty of salt and the ice can circulate. The stems, shaped like a cactus, keep the Mexican theme and complement the color of a well-made margarita. When serving drinks outdoors, the sturdy plastic really comes in handy--it won't break, no matter how clumsy your thirsty guests become. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great for that college party . . .
The only reluctance I had towards this product is the fact that they're plastic.I'm the kind of guy who likes his stainless steel and glassware. At any rate, these turned out to be great for the apartment when I washaving a few people over for margarita night. In fact, I'd probably bedown to 3 of them if they were glass because they tend to get knocked over.

The glasses themselves are a bit tacky for "real" social typeparties, but if you're just having a casual drink or rowdy party peopleover, then they're perfect. The base is big enough so they're fairlysturdy, but again, since they're plastic they're not quite as heavy andthey tend to get knocked over if bumped.

If you're in need of someinexpensive "authentic" margarita glasses or you're just tired ofdrinking them out of a styrofoam cup, then these should be right up youralley. ... Read more

Not being very knowleadgable about drinks and what they are made of, I found this book to be especially helpful. It described the art of making cocktails and provided useful information for people who would like to concoct their own drinks at home. The number of recipes included is extensive, nicely divided into subcategories like "mixed drinks" or "shots", etc.The only downside of the book is that it is not always clear about the precise amounts a person should use of each ingredient. For example it vould say "1 shot of Amaretto" and below that as the next ingredient simply "Sour Mix".But how much?So in my opinion the book could use some work, but it is helpful even the way it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Bartending Guide You'll Ever Want or Need
All those other guides are confusing and irritating. This is THE GUIDE.Easy and fun to read. For either the professional or home bartender this is the one.It helped me become a master mixer for whenever I have friends and family over for cocktails!

5-0 out of 5 stars simply perfect
The Perfect Cocktail has been the most helpful guide that I have used in my 5 yr. of bartending. It is a simple breakdown of the making and selling of drinks. It is perfect for a basic tavern because the ingredients arebasic, while other guides consist of recipes/products that would be morelikely to be called for/in stock at a more formal establishment. The besttip I've gotten from this book is not to wad up my tips, to lay them flatto save time counting . ... Editorial Review

If you like it shaken, not stirred, then this shaker will take you there in style. This simply designed three-piece cocktail shaker has the contemporary look of high-quality 18/10 stainless steel and sports a brushed matte finish. After you shake up your concoction, just remove the cap and pour through the built-in strainer. No need to fumble around with separate pieces. Sample your creations from the cap, which doubles as a taster cup. Stores conveniently right in your liquor cabinet. --Matthew Evans ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid construction. Will last forever!
Don't waste your time on cheaper brands. This shaker will stand the test of time.Unlike other reviewers, my shaker is not too tight at all, though I imagine freezing it would make it hard to pull apart. You can't go wrong here.ZH

4-0 out of 5 stars Great shaker with "Super" tight strainer/lid...
I really like this shaker but wow that shaker is really in place!I suppose it's a pretty good thing too because I have used other shakers and while shaking up the mix the top went flying and the icky-sticky stuff took a trip around the room.I use mine mostly for making Margarita's.I love that you can keep it in the freezer after cleaning so that it's nice and frosty when you are ready to use it.But........you better work out those fingers and hands cuz brother that lid is tight! I've found the best way for me to loosen it's grip is to hold with one hand and slightly twist with the other while pushing up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Shaker
I like this a lot.It is very compact and easy to use. I like the built in ice strainer. You just slip off the cap and pour. No hassles of the top jamming and having to beat it open with a knife. You will need a finer strainer if you want to filter out citrus pulp, for example. But for most cocktails you are just straining out the ice. But I like this one for it's convenience. ... Read more
