Here's the scoop: From big dippers (a pre-sellout Ben & Jerry's) tolittle dippers (Carl's in Fredericksburg, Virginia), this delectable documentary tours the country to talk to people who make, sell, scoop, and study ice cream. An Ice Cream Show visits such local institutions as Bassett's in Philadelphia and Matsumoto's in Haleiwa, Hawaii, presents the history of Howard Johnson's, and studies the science of ice cream at Penn State University. It also gets good dish from soda jerks who reveal that "Check the vanilla" is store code for "A pretty girl just came in." Viewers also meet such entrepreneurs as Robin Rose, who started a traffic school for chocoholics in Los Angeles, and browse among vintage ice cream collectibles.

We all scream for ice cream, America's favorite frozen dessert. AnIce Cream Show is as reassuring and satisfying as a dish of French Vanilla.

I really enjoyed learning all about the ins and outs of the history of IceCream. My children and their classmates love towatch it over and overagain.

3-0 out of 5 stars I screamed for the "ice cream show"
What is not to love about an ice cream show? No matter what, you know you are going to see a lot of happy people, lots of interesting places, and an insiders look into how this combination of cream, sugar, and fruit getsmade. This was an enjoyable, though disjointed, cruise through an americanpasttime, eating ice cream. The variety of different locations, anddifferent flavors kept me in the seat, and the fun narration was constantlyassuring me that it wasn't taking its topic too seriously.I will admit toeating more ice cream since I watched it, what the heck...it's June. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite 4-year-old birthday present
I'm surprised at all the negative reviews. This was my daughter's favorite birthday present when she turned 4.She has played with it for hours! She has no trouble using the ice cream press. It does require some supervision and it is necessary to clean it out when done. The colors get mixed up, but who cares!Playdoh is cheap... you can always buy more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reviewed by a 11 year old girl!
My mom brought this for my sister when she was 7. It was a mess! You would have to press REALLY hard just to get alittle bit of play-dough in the cup! It made a mess on my nice NEW rug! I think my mom would buy play-dough things in the next few years, but I hope she learned her lesson about buying this one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ice Cream Maker a Drip
My two-and-half year old daughter received this play doh set as a gift. What a disappointment! As the other reviews pointed out, the ice-cream maker which is suppose to function like a soft-serve press is really difficult to use.You need to press really hard on the ice-cream maker and even one container of doh is not enough to make a cone's worth of ice-cream swirl.Clean-up is a pain, too.It does get in all the cracks in ice-cream maker. You spend more time cleaning up then actually making the ice-cream, which was not easy to begin with! The accompanying molds work well enough but your child might have more fun with miniature cookie cutters. ... Read more

Creating up to 1-1/2 quarts of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, or frozen drinks at home takes only about 20 minutes with thiselectric appliance, and salt and ice are not needed. After themachine's chilling chamber has been in the freezer for about eighthours the liquid between its walls is thoroughly frozen. The chamberthen goes atop the power base, the unit's paddle goes into the chamber, the transparent top is locked in place, and the machine is turned on.Ingredients go into the chamber through an opening in the top as thepaddle turns. The chamber chills the ingredients to whateverconsistency is desired--though dense treats are hard to make becausethe paddle churns in air.

Chocolate chips, chopped fruit, nuts, and other special ingredients canbe added toward the end. The chamber is nonstick for easy cleanup.Storing it in the freezer ensures a frozen confection is only 20 to 40minutes away when the mood strikes. The machine measures 10 inches indiameter and 15 inches high and weighs 9-1/2 pounds. It carries athree-year warranty against defects. A detailed instruction bookletincluding many recipes is included. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ice cream just the way you want it!
This is a delightfully easy way to make ice cream that tastes the way you want it to.Want a flavor no one sells?Mix it yourself with this easy-to-use machine.Even basic flavors are great when you control the ingredients that go in.
The machine is not messy, as it requires no ice or rock salt, and all of the parts are fairly easy to wash. The recipes in the instruction book work just fine.

A bit of advice;
1)Read the instructions carefully.
2)Plan for some lead time. You need to have the bowl completely frozen. (If you need to make more than one batch at a time, you can buy an extra freezer bowl.)
3)Bear in mind that the ice cream will still be soft when the machine is done with it. (This is true with most ice cream machines.) You will still need to put it in the freezer for a while before serving.
4)Indulge in high quality ingredients; for example, get some whole vanilla beans for your vanilla ice cream. (If you want a lot of them, eBay is the cheapest place to get them.)

I am delighted with this purchase and just can not imagine buying ice cream from the store again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pays for itself in one summer of use
I've had this ice-cream maker for three years now, and think it's the best little ice-cream maker I've owned. It's so easy to use and clean, and works perfectly every time. It has definitely paid for itself several times over, because I haven't bought store-bought ice-cream since I bought this machine, and I've made LOTS of ice-cream, gelato and sorbet with it since.

My recommendation for best results: Refridgerate your ice-cream mixture overnight before making if possible, and be sure the insert is thoroughly frozen in a very cold freezer. On warm summer days, I also cover the top opening of the clear plastic "lid"with a folded towel to keep the cool in better.

I got this icecream maker for Chritmas a couple of years ago. It really works well. It does take some of your freezer room but well worth it. We made Pinacoladas with it when I first got it and my friends havent stopped talking about them since. Makes a wonderful gift or for your home. My kids love it too. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For a century and a half, since a woman in New York invented the hand-crank freezer, making ice cream has been an American family value. Mom blended the ice cream mixture; Dad filled the maker's wooden tub with ice and rock salt to achieve the below-freezing temperature needed to produce smooth confections; kids clamored to turn the crank; and everyone happily consumed big bowls of ice cream as a reward. This family-bonding activity remains as vibrant today as it was through a century-and-a-half of "progress." With various ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet recipes included, this old-fashioned White Mountain ice cream maker maintains the tradition. Only the use of modern stainless steel for the freezer can and dasher and the electric motor distinguish this rugged maker from the one earlier generations enjoyed. And years from now it will still be used, knitting together a family's history. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful quality product
This is truly a top of the line item. We have made several recipes and each have turned out perfectly. The ice cream is smooth and silky. The motor is loud so it's best to make your ice cream early and then pack the freezer for later consumption, that way the noise doesn't interfere with conversation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Metal Contaminated Ice Cream
Yes, it makes ice cream but you can't eat it.

Inside the container where the mixture is poured, there is a beater which stirs it as it freezes. The sides of this beater are thin wooden slats connected onto the cast metal beater by a few, cheap metal screws. These screws get wiggled back and forth while the container spins around in the ice. When it finished I was scooping out the ice cream and I found black streaks in it.You had to look closely but they were there.I don't like the idea of aluminum.

This was a very cheap and not well thought out way of connecting the wood to the metal.Poor workmanship. Not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars smooth and creamy
Ice cream making is a tradition in my family.I searched all the local stores for a white mountain ice cream freezer before turning to the web.The first bowl of ice cream from this freezer was worth all the trouble. It was frozen to a soft serve consistency (not at all runny) in about 20 minutes (we only made 2 qts the first time) but the motor had no problem turning the crank and the ice cream was very smooth.I am the first in my family to get one with a motor but it was worth the extra [money] to be able to just turn it on and go on making dinner and have it all be ready at the same time.If you want quality ice cream and lots of it, this freezer can't be beat! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious
I really like this recipe book. The recipes are all very easy to put together using ordinary kitchen ingredients - nothing fancy although the ice cream tastes very much so!The book also tells the history of the Ben and Jerry's franchise which is funny and interesting, and little tidbits of information about each flavor.

The recipes are perfect for use with the Cuisinart 1.5 quart ice cream maker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, butyou still have to make the ice cream
Here are two guys that KNOW ice cream and are willing to share the basics and the ins and outs that come from making the best ice cream available for many years. But, you still have to have good ingredients, a good ice cream maker and some patience. If you read the book carefully and take your time, you will be rewarded with some excellent ice cream. Make it with your kids or grand kids. Yum.

5-0 out of 5 stars For creamy, delicious treats!
I'd tried making ice cream in a hand cranked ice cream maker someone gave my fiance and I a while back. I thought the machine was faulty because the ice cream wasn't very good. Then I bought Ben and Jerry's book and I realized it wasn't the machine! All I'd needed was good recipes! Our favorite is the coffee one. It's so smooth and creamy and flavorful it puts my past favorites of Hagen Daz and Starbucks in the back seat. I wondered about the raw egg safety so I'm glad to read what another reviewer said about buying pasturized eggs. I feel like now I can serve this to my niece and nephews without a worry. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Curious George book
My son is two years old, and loves this Curious George book.Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop was not written by H.A. Rey, the creator of Curious George.Rather, the book was adapted from a Curious George video.

Still, it's a great story.

The Man With the Yellow Hat leaves George in the custody of Mr. Herb, at Mr. Herb's new ice cream shop. When George is unattended, he jumps on the counter, and begins adding scoops of various flavors to Mr. Herb's order!Later, he hops onto a counter near a window looking into the street. His antics draw a crowd of onlookers, and suddenly Mr. Herb has more ice cream orders than he can handle!

As always, the mischievous George escapes any real trouble, while having a lot of fun.Everything turns out well. While this book is no masterpiece, I think most Curious George fans will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop
Once again George gets into mischief when the man in the yellow hat is not looking.George keeps us in stitches as he goes from one flavor to the next.Who wouldn't want to try ALL the flavors in the ice cream shop? Thisis a lovely book, and my students especially enjoyed reading it the day wemade our own homemade ice cream! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It is OK
I did not buy the maker but my friend got it as a gift a long time ago. We are both 11 and when we made the ice cream, the taste was very good but it did not make very much ice cream. Also it was not cold for very long. When we took it off with the scraper it soon got all runny. The scraper also falls off so the little ice cream we did have was on the floor and on our shirts. The handle also ends up throughing the ice cream at us. I went home and made my own maker, it worked alot better. We also did not have the mixes. You don't need them you can make your own thats makes it better. If you don't want to make a maker like I did a big plastic bag for ice and a little plasitic bag for the ingredents works just well. We made ice cream laast year in the fith grade and it came out mich better than this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very MUCH?
tHIS toy is every cool. I does not make very much ice cream Would not recomand unless you have a small stomach.

5-0 out of 5 stars very cool
Works well - very easy to use and clean up. Downside is that the ice cream has to be scraped off when it is pretty soft - if you crank for too long the ice cream will freeze so hard that the plastic scraper will just not cut it (literally) - and its a mess trying to scrape the icream off the barrell with anything else.
No regrets, though - what a cool toy! ... Read more

At least half of the songs on Van Halen's eponymous 1978 debut are still considered classics, and the Eddie Van Halen instrumental "Eruption" revolutionized the guitar community by introducing a technique called finger-tapping into the heavy metal lexicon. A magnificent debut for sure, but maybe the band should have held onto a few of their blockbuster tunes to bolster the lean years that started after 1984, and continue to the present day. Regardless, Van Halen amply demonstrate their drive, showmanship, and musicianship throughout, blowing the needle off the scale on such tracks as "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Runnin' with the Devil," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." --Jon Wiederhorn ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Rocket that launched the greatest Rock Mission EVER!!!
Van Halen is a band, who's early music, seemed almost classic perhaps during the present day it was released.Already gold.Already framed.Already Legend. So I looked up Classic in the dictionary, wondering if it would adhere to this album, and a band who's music has stood the test of time. You read the definition, then you tell me!

clas·sic( P )
adj.

1) Belonging to the highest rank or class.
2) Serving as the established model or standard: a classic example of colonial architecture.
3) Having lasting significance or worth; enduring.

A must have for any rock fan, anyone who likes fun music, anyone who dreams of being a great rock guitarist or drummer or frontman...take it from this, it is the solo intruder that busted out of the 70's and became the bar that others tried to reach throughout 80's and even 90's guitar rock bands. It's only right that this albums first song is called "Eruption" and is a solo by Eddie Van Halen that changed the way rock guitar would be played, heard, and sound for the next two decades.

This album, along with there next 2, would all be recorded in studio LIVE.That's right, no dubbing, no mixing of tracks, none of that...now some might say "so what?" Well the fact is, you look at the musicians, you hear...no...you FEEL their music, and the signature sound of Eddie's guitar...then tell me if anyone since then, of that musical talent, could do the same.I'm not jabbing other bands, I'm just putting this one, and especially with their first album, wayyyy up there on a pedestal.

Van Halen's self-titled 1978 debut is undoubtedly one of the all-time best debuts by a hard rock/heavy metal band. All of the components for a classic are represented - excellent songs and high-octane performances (the excitement of their live show was captured perfectly by producer Ted Templeman) are used to create an invigorating, original sound. Like other acclaimed debuts (Led Zeppelin, Are You Experienced?), Van Halen has a raw edge since it was recorded quickly, and every single song is a winner.

It's also become one of the ultimate party albums over the years, since the overall mood is excited and celebratory. While singer David Lee Roth's bravado and the steady rhythm section of drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony were both key ingredients, the main attraction was Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing. Few other guitarists have had such an instant impact on a generation of up-and-coming players who copied his unorthodox, kamikaze style - especially his trademark tapping technique showcased on the album's legendary solo, "Eruption." Almost all of the tracks on Van Halen have rightfully become radio staples, such as the scorching rockers "Runnin' With the Devil," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Atomic Punk," and "On Fire," while covers of "You Really Got Me" and "Ice Cream Man" remain awe-inspiring to this day. Van Halen proved to be the ultimate coming-of-age soundtrack to many a teenager since its release, resulting in sales of over ten million in the U.S. alone. Everyone on the planet should own a copy of this landmark release.

5-0 out of 5 stars a terrific van halen debut
van halen's debut is one of the best ever albums i have ever listened to.very few albums can boast of brilliant songs like runnin with the devil, aint talkin about love and you really gotme.hugely recommended.
