Editorial Review

Sleek and effective, this simple electric device chills a bottle of wineor champagne in as little as four minutes. Simply place a bottle into thebucket, dump in one or two trays of ice cubes, add tap water to the bottle'sshoulder, plug in the AC adapter (included), and set the timer, which runs from5 to 20 minutes. When the wine is chilled (a guide for optimal temperatures ofvarious wines is included), the chiller can be unplugged and taken to the tableas an ordinary ice bucket would be to keep wine at the proper temperature. (Fora too-cold red wine, using warm water instead of ice and water will bring it upto the proper drinking temperature.) Made of gleaming black plastic, the chillerstands 12-3/4 inches tall and carries a one-year warranty against defects.--Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wine Lover
Despite what others have said about this not "feeling like a quality product" or it "takes a whole 20 minutes to chill a bottle of wine", this product is awesome! You cannot chill a room temperature bottle of wine in the freezer for less than 30-40 minutes and in the refrigerator it can take over 3 hours. If this chiller does take the entire 20 minutes to chill a bottle, it's well worth it because it's the perfect temperature. The chiller works great for merlots or cabs too -- takes five minutes to chill it to the proper 57-58 degrees.I would definitely recommend this product...you cannot go wrong!!

5-0 out of 5 stars No more freezer explosions
Have you ever tried to chill some champagne or sparkling water fast by sticking it in the freezer for a few moments, forgotten it, had it ruined or had it explode? If picking out shards of frozen glass from your freezer instead of enjoying a perfectly chilled beverage is your idea of a good time, then pass on this product.

Sure, an icebucket does the job too.BUT if there are times you find yourself ready to drink a bottle of white wine or a bottle of champagne(perhaps one brought by a guest) and the wine or the champagne you have is not chilled, AND you don't have tons of ice in your freezer, AND you're not in the mood to run out to the 7/11 for a sack of ice, pull out the Vinchilla.Just throw in a tray or two of ice cubes, add water, turn the dial and watch the gentle swirling of the water as it chills your bottle of bubbly to perfection.

Remember, wine experts agree:it is NOT good for wine to sit in the refrigerator for a long time.A quick chill is the best way to preserve its integrity.

Half the people on my Christmas list are getting this as a present. The price on this can't be beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful gift idea
I bought the vin chilla as a gift for my wife and there hasnt been a day gone by that it hasnt seen some use. Not only does it chill the wine to perfection but it also can be sued to chill canned drinks such as beer and soda, and it even fits champagne bottles not that I have had cause to use it for that. This thing also can be used to raise the temperature of bottles of red wine that have gotten cold, or take the bite out of soda if your kids have sensitive teeth like mine.

A brilliant gift and well worthwhile investment. If you know a wine buff which would you prefer to buy them a bottle that goes immediatly or to buy them something they cxan use over and over again. ...

My advice buy it. ... Read more

This Wai Lana yoga mat offers a stable, comfortable surface on which to begin or develop your yoga poses and practice. The mat is cushiony for comfort with a tacky surface to help you maintain postures accurately and safely. Durable and lightweight, it measures 68 by 24 by 1/8 inches. To wash it, you simply rinse with cool water and detergent and squeeze it dry with a towel. The mat rolls up to a tube shape with an approximate diameter of four inches for easy storage and transport. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Company
I'm sure the mat would have been fine, but they mixed up my order, and this company does not refund shipping, which was almost the price of the mat-- lame!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Sides to All Yoga Mats; Know Which Side is Up
Yoga mats come in three basic thicknesses. At 1/8" this mat is of average thickness. At 24" x 68" it is also the standard width and length. Mats that are about half a thick as this one are good for travel or placing under a thicker mat to provide more traction. The thick mats (3/16") are about 50% thicker than this one and are designed for those who need or want extra cushion.

There are two sides to this and nearly all yoga mats. Look carefully at the 'bumps' on each side of the mat. The larger bumps are designed to face upwards to cushion your hands, feet, and knees during poses while keeping your body from dangerously slipping out of alignment. The smaller bumps are designed to face downwards to grip the floor and keep the yoga mat from sliding. Many mats have a label on one end with the name of the brand. This is typically, but not always, located on the 'up' side. The bumps will tell you for sure.

This yoga mat will increase in softness and stickiness with use. (So do most mats.) They start out mildly sticky and increase in stickiness the more they are used. You will want to wash your mat when it first arrives so as to remove the thin film they get on their surface during the manufacturing process. Instructions for washing the mat are included. Once you've washed and dried your mat you're ready to begin! After using it for a while, if you find the mat decreasing in stickiness each time you pull it out, this is the typical sign that a light coating of dust or too much body sweat has accumulated on your mat and it needs a light hand washing with very diluted soap and water. After washing, roll your mat in a thick towel to squeeze out the excess water, otherwise it will take forever to dry in the air. Then, air dry your mat unrolled, inside, and away from sunlight. (Hanging over the shower bar works nicely.)

When you first unroll your mat you will find one end to be a bit curled. Simply alternate the direction you roll your mat (top outside once, then bottom outside next) or the end you start from (curled end once, flat end next time) and you'll find it straightening out more or less over time.

I recommend buying your own yoga mat even if your yoga studio or gym provides them for you. I've worked in many studios and gyms over the years. Sometimes management has mats cleaned often, sometimes not. If you bring your own mat you always know where it's been. :o) Plus, owning your own mat may encourage you to begin valuable practice at home.

For my students who have trouble with their knees in some of the poses requiring the body weight to rest on a knee, I recommend temporarily folding over one end of the mat to get double cushion under the knee while still leaving one layer under the rest of the body. This saves you having to haul more than one mat out each time you practice which can be discouraging especially to the beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific but sometimes skids--buy two!
This mat tends to skid on tile if you don't double up, so order two.But it's excellent and cushioning for yoga, pilates, and perfect to place beneath a BodyDome. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In Wine for Dummies, Mary Ewing-Mulligan teams up with hubby and fellow wine educator Ed McCarthy to guide us on an exhaustive, entertaining trip around the enological--that's right, enological--world.Though clearly experts themselves (Ewing-Mulligan is one of a handful of Americans holding the rare title Master of Wine), the authors assure us that even the most basic knowledge will undermine the very notion of wine pretension. It's as simple as this: "This wine is named for a grape variety. This wine is named for a geographical region. When they make this kind of wine, it goes into this kind of bottle."And so on.

By providing the context in which to begin exploring wine, Wine for Dummies can easily become the send-off for a lifelong education.McCarthy and Mulligan deflate many of the wine snob's attitudes; they assure us that most wine sold today is "good wine," and that any further distinctions made about wine are ultimately subjective. The practical, jovial mentoring the authors provide encourages readers to chart their own course toward drinking great wine (although the authors naturally recommend dozens of their own favorites along the way).In later chapters, McCarthy and Mulligan delve into more serious topics such as investing in and cellaring wine.Even these discussions seem appropriate, given that you'll probably find the allure of wine growing as its mystery subsides to the force of this superb introductory text. --Todd Gehman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clarity
This is a very good meat and potatoes wine book to have on hand around the house.I find the explanations to have high clarity, which is important in a wine book.I also like the summary boxes in the beginning of the book and the vintage chart. The book does a good job of giving a little bit of information on different wine types, so that you don't get overwhelmed. The Dummies symbols throughout the book though seem to me unnecessary.

I also really enjoy Windows of the World, Oldman's Guide, and World Atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank God! Cliff Notes for wine!
I read this book when I was first beginning to experience the wonderful world of wine, and it has been a great resource for me. A quick read, the book is organized into chapters on choosing wines at shops and restaurants, where and how wines are made, choosing wine to go with food, and descriptive terms for wine. (They even have pronunciations for wine terms. No more looking stupid at dinner parties!) Also, the book touches on some of the major wine-makers that it pays to be familiar with.

I really like the attitude that the authors take towards the subject matter. They seem to think (as I do) that wine is not a snobby subject to learn about. It's about something most of us are already familiar with - what tastes we like and don't like. Easy, huh? They emphasize that wine is to be enjoyed, not agonized over.

I like the way the content is interspersed with funny comics, highlighted tips, and even little technical blurbs about wine. (There are also "snob alerts" throughout the book! They address some of the attitudes self-proclaimed "wine experts" sometimes express. What a hoot!)

All in all, a great read. Based on the book's advice, I bought a small, pocket-sized wine book. When I'm out at a restaurant or party and I taste something I like, I jot it down in the book for future reference. Then, I use the book when I go to the wine shop or when I'm eating out. Great suggestion!

5-0 out of 5 stars great
OK, I admit it. I hate these damn idiot books... but this one is great. I hate the ones I browse through in the bookstores on topics on which I know something. Perhaps that's why I loved this one? I've been into wine for a couple of years but knew almost nothing. One could say I was prepared to read this book then. Nevertheless, the book was precisely what I was looking for. It covered the whole kit and kaboodle, from the making of wine to the different sensations associated with different wine types to wine areas to how to order it in a restaurant. There's just tons of myths and disinformation out there about wine, and this book exposes them all. Truly a great one in my humble opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want one Vinyasa DVD - this is it!
Why aren't more yoga DVD's this thoughfully produced? Instead of just putting a VHS session on DVD and breaking it up into segments - this DVD provides many begining, intermediate, and advanced workouts. The instructor gives great cues without being distracting. The pace is great - time to get into and out of each asana - but still provides the flow of power yoga. This is a DVD that you can grow with and learn a lot from. I bought a few power yoga DVD's all at once - and had I known how much this offered and how well it was put together I would have only bought this and Yoga Shakti with Shiva Rea. Moderately good was Power yoga with Rodney Yee and moderately moderate was power yoga with Bryan Kest (a bit fleshy and flashy for a yoga dvd). Poor was Ashtanga Yoga with Nicki Doane. Again if you are beginer or intermediate practitioner that wants to expand into Vinyasa/Power/Ahstanga/Flow then Barbara Benagh's Power Yoga For Everybody may be the only DVD you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good DVD
I started power yoga classes about 7 months ago and have always found it to be really challenging and hard to keep up with others in my class. My yoga teacher offered some advice and suggested that I pick-up a book or really good at home video/DVD to supplement my in class workout. This DVD's instructor is precise and very engaging with many alternatives to fit anyones fitness level or flexibility. Its a slower pace than advanced power yogi's may be in to, but the slow pace method is gaining popularity and this DVD is just on that curve. Most of all its an incredible value with user friendly capabilities.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Props
I like to just sit down with my mat and do my yoga.Every one of these segments required props (chair, blocks, strap). Also many of the segments are exactly the same with more material added at the end. I gave this one away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for new babies
This is one of the first toys my baby "played" with.I set it up next to the changing table and she loves looking at herself in the mirror. She doesn't fuss at all when I change her she is so busy "playing" with the baby in the mirror. We use it a lot for tummy time and floor time also. She ignores all her toys and just stares at the mirror, and spins the ball.It doesn't have lights and music but for us that is a good thing, she gets overstimulated so easily. I would definately recommend this toy to friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!
Right now I have this mirror in her crib. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the ties that tie it to the crib are really annoying... velcro would be better. My daughter loves the spinning ball and bats at her reflection in the mirror. It's a great toy for the crib and I'm sure she'll continue to enjoy it outside the crib.

5-0 out of 5 stars best pics ive ever seen
i just recently bought some rips boxer briefs and they are extremely comfortable. i decided then to read a book about these underwear..i was just curious...when i got this book the stunning quality of the pics amazed me...the guys are so hott in this book...chiseled abs, muscular chests, tight buns, everything! as i flipped through each page, my boner got stronger and stronger....the downside to the book is the homoerotic scenes with men near and touching each other...i would recommend the book to those 15+...***** definitely w/o a doubt

4-0 out of 5 stars not your average coffee table book
After buying some RIPS underwear, I noticed this book, and thought, hey, let's see what this is all about. This books shows a very artistic method of selling their products. You get to see some very abercrombie-esque boys in various settings wearing RIPS...... Some of the pics are done in a very erotic setting (male standing ..... behind a fountain, and such). Some of the images are rather homoerotic with two of the male models holding each other or laying near each other. For a coffee table book, I think it works great. I put it along side such books as Erotic Art, and my Abercrombie catalogs. It is tasteful, no explicit...... images, just very attractive men in interesting scenes with RIPS underwear, and it some cases, no .......

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine product, shipping a bit high though
Great squeegee for the money, as it comes with a real squeegee wipe at the end, unlike other squeegees which are merely comprised of hard plastic.

The stainless steel end looks great, and my only complaint is that they went cheap and made the handle out of plastic and glued it onto the end, instead of making it of unibody stainless steel construction. It looks as though the handle lacks some long term durability, but fortunately, it has already survived a few falls thus far.

The squeegee comes with a handy wall mountable suction cup mounted hook as well.

Shipping from the container store was exhorbitant, almost equal to the cost of the product itself. ... Read more

Crest Whitestrips Dental Whitening System

Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars

Reviews (15)

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it worth the money? Yes!
I used the original Crest White Strips and I'm very happy with the results. It *does* leave a funky taste in your mouth and when it's removed, it's really gross and tacky on the teeth. But if your willing to bypass all of that, it's worth all the yukiness ;). For the first week, I did have some sensitivity that lingered for awhile but it went away after the first week and it left my teeth really white! This is my second time using this (the strips reccomend using it every 6 months for the 'original') and I haven't been happier. One thing that Crest also has out is the 'Night Effects'. It's a paste you leave on overnight. Again, it's kinda weird having something that 'tacky' on the teeth overnight but I did see a difference after the 2 weeks.

It's really all about personal tastes and the people willing to tolerate the downsides of the Crest Whitening Systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inexpensive, easy, effective
I was a bit skeptical, but I gave'em a try.The 7-day ones.Easy to use and get used to, and they get great results.

Re: gum pain from contact with peroxide (mentioned in some of the other review here):I have friends who definitely had sore gums whem using this product, but they all were so happy with the results that the soreness did not cause them to diss the product.I personally felt no soreness whatsoever. This suggests that it just depends on individual gum tenderness.

They really do work well, with noticeable results in a mere 2-3 days. And they really do NOT cost $300-$600.My own dentist said in a moment of candor, that these over-the-counter products are actually pretty good.My experience certainly confirms that.

4-0 out of 5 stars It really works :)
Before going to my dentist to spend $600 on a whitening tray, I decided to try out these whitestrips first. And good thing I did - my teeth did get whiter.

Why only 4 stars then? The reason is twofold:
- a few sensitivity issues
My teeth/gum got a bit sensitive whenever I used these strips, and the first few times I used them were a bit painful.. I could feel the peroxide 'bubbling' under the strip. If you already have sensitive teeth/gums, I'm not sure that you'll like this.

- results didn't last for 12 months.
I think it's been about 6 months or so since I've tried these, and my teeth are not as white as it was back then. But then again, the fact that I didn't stay away from coffee/tea/soda altogether might explain some of it.

However, lets say that I would be willing to invest in this product again. ... Read more

Editorial Review

How much of your body weight comes from fat and how much from lean muscle? This scale lets you know so that you can make choices to improve and monitor your health. Tanika has patented a precise, easy way to use the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) method at home. Simply enter your personal data using the ‘set,’ ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons, and then stand barefoot on the scale. Electrodes in the foot sensor pads send a low-level electrical current through the body which measures the percentage of body fat. How? The current passes quickly through muscle and is slowed by fat.

Up to four users can program the scale with the following personal data: age, height, male, male athlete, female, female athlete, and activity level (1: little or no exercise; 3: intense physical activity). A switch on the back lets the user choose metric, imperial, or stones/pounds. The two-line digital display shows weight followed by body fat percentage, and except in athlete mode, lets you know if you are underfat, healthy, overfat, or obese. It will also tell you how many calories to consume in order to maintain your weight. Adjust accordingly if you’re trying to lose! A chart included in the instruction booklet shows appropriate ranges of fat percentage for age and gender. Four numbered tabs are located on the front edge of the scale, so that person number 1 lightly kicks tab number 1 with a big toe to activate his or her stored data. After the current reading, the ‘up’ button may be pressed and held to recall the previous reading for comparison. An additional weight-only tab provides a quick weight check, and a ‘guest’ button allows readings without reprogramming a personal tab. The weight capacity of this scale is 330 pounds (150 kilograms; 23 stones/8 pounds).

The scale, dark gray with metallic accents, measures 11-1/2 by 12 by 2 inches and should be used on a hard, level, dry floor. Four AA batteries (included) are required for operation. The monitor is intended for adults (up to age 99) and children (age 7 and older) who lead inactive or moderately active lifestyles, as well as athletic adults. The body fat monitor is not intended for use by pregnant women, people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic medical devices, professional athletes, or bodybuilders. Body fat percentage estimates may vary from day to day due to hydration changes from alcohol consumption, menstruation, illness, and other such factors. Readings taken at the same time everyday under consistent conditions will be most accurate. Tanita covers this scale with a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great piece of equipment, but you MUST be careful when using
I have been using this scale for 3 months to track my weight/fat level as I try to drop a little fat and gain some muscle by working out often. I have been using the scale in the morning and everning almost every day to smooth out any irregularities in measurements, and I've learned a lot about the scale in the process. According to the scale, in the last 3 months, I've gained 2 lbs of fat and 11 lbs of lean mass (hopefully I can use all that new muscle to burn that fat back off!).

First, it seems to be very consistent. I have watched my weight gradually increase and if I eat a meal shortly before weighing myself, I weigh unusually high, and if I do extra cardio work and don't eat as much in a day, that evening my fat % will be lower than usual.

In addition to those kinds of effects, I weigh an average of 1.5 pounds more in the evening and my fat level is 2.6% higher in the morning. All these facts point out that consistency in measurements is CRITICAL if you want your results to mean anything. If you want to weigh yourself once a week, you must be very careful that the conditions are the same.

I highly recommend weighing yourself regularly and averaging values. That's what I'm doing and I find my results much more useful than occasional weighing. For example, last week my lowest weight in the evening was 182.6 and the highest was 187. Similar things happen with fat percentages. Last week I varied between 11.2% and 14.9% in the evenings. Those numbers make the scale sound inconsistent, but I have been graphing weekly averages, and the trends have been very consistent. My weight has been up 1.5-2.5 lbs every week, and fat% is changing no more than 0.5% from one week to the next and it's staying in a narrow range (13-14).

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. I highly recommend these scales. It would be great if once a week or once a month testing on expensive equipment was adequate, but unless you are making huge changes, day to day fluctuations will make results hard to interpret. Using a scale like this will help to give you meaningful, week to week results. It's been a big help in keeping me motivated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tanita BF682 Body Fat Scale
I am disappointed in this scale because of the inaccuracy with the body fat monitor.I had purchased a Health-o-meter just a week before and returned it because we thought the body fat percentage was way off. So I had heard Tanita was very good, and went ahead and purchased this with Amazon. My husband, son and daughter all show low body fat, and all are thin and fit people, so I guess it's accurate. But when I get on the scale, my body fat % is showing 32%.When I had mine done professionally at our local college gym, it was 22%.I am a 43 year old women who works out every day lifting weights and doing aerobics.I am 5'9" and weigh 146.The problem is, when I get on the scale using my husband's setting, my body fat % reading is 13%.He is 6 feet tall and weighs 166.So why is that?Is it just taking some calculation based on my settings? It looks at my age, height and weight and thinks "middle aged woman" hmm, 32%.That's what is seems like, anyhow.I thought it was based on the electronic component that actually measures your body composition.Maybe I was just uninformed, but, this just doesn't seem right.I gave three stars because the weight seems to be correct for all 4 members of my family, and I like that it is consistent and gives readings to the nearest two-tenths.It also stores the last reading.

I recommend everyone get their body composition done at a gym like I did.It was inexpensive, quick and easy. Then you'll know for sure.Save some money and get a scale that gives weight only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tanita BF682 is a great scale - consistent and dependable.
For years I weighed myself with a Health-O-Meter scale and "guessed" at my weight. I would pop on the scale, get off and allow it to reset, pop back on and find my weight would vary usually by 1-3 pounds. But once by 20 pounds!

After much frustration I decided to invest in the Tanita BF682. The BF682 is a sturdy attractive metal and plastic scale with some great features. After I purchased it I put it on a level surface (rugs are a no-no) and weighed myself about 10 times in a row not giving the scale a chance to reset. To my pleasure I weighed the exact same each time right down to .2 of a pound!

The scale has several buttons in the front that you tap with your foot to program in up to four family members height, weight, activity level and age. When you step on the scale you will get a read out with your weight and body fat. In order to ensure an accurate bodyfat measurement, you should weigh at the same time each afternoon (not first thing in the morning as you are not hydrated) in your bare feet. There is also a "guest" button so a guest can get a bodyfat and weight reading and a weigh only button that will give weight only.

Tanita works by sending a small electrical current through your body to read your bodyfat. You do not experience any discomfort at all, but those with a pacemaker should not use it as the electrical current may interfere with the operation of the pacemaker. After it has read your body fat the scale will give you the number and also a small icon will tell you if you are underfat, healthy, overfat or obese.

One super nice thing about this scale is the DCI or daily caloric intake. That's right! Along with your bodyfat and weight, this scale is so smart it will also tell you how many calories you are consuming to weigh what you do. If you want to beef up - eat more calories than the number shown and if you want to skinny down - eat less. Very motivational.

The scale operates on 4 double A batteries that are included as are easy to follow directions.

If you are looking for a bodyfat, daily caloric intake and weight scale this is an excellent scale. In April 2005, however, Tanita is set to release a new set of scales called Innerscan. These will vary in features but may monitor body functions such as water %, bone mass, muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age and daily calorie intake along with weight and body fat depending on the model you choose. Starting price will only be about $10 more so you many want to check into those models also. ... Read more
