Lodge 3-Quart Cast Iron Indoor/Outdoor Combo Cooker
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

This two-piece cast-iron combo takes care of most stovetop needs. The bottom is a 3-quart pan that works either as a fry pan or a saucepan, while the tight-fitting lid doubles as a griddle for stir-frying or grilling. Both pieces are built to last--nothing tops cast iron for durability. Unlike many cooking surfaces, cast iron becomes more stick-resistant as it ages. Cast iron has excellent heat retention, so there's no need to cook over extremely high temperatures and dishes will stay warm in the pan. Cast iron also safely adds iron to your food. Because iron can rust, this pan should not be immersed in water for long periods, and it should stay out of the dishwasher. Just wash it with soap and water, avoiding abrasive cleaners. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Found at Marshall's
I was initially disappointed to see that Amazon no longer sold this combo set and could not find it in local stores. Then I went to Marshall's (the discount home and clothing store) to pick up some Le Creuset spatula's that I heard were in stock and what did I see in the clearance section for $16--This combo pan by Lodge!!! I seasoned it and had one or two mishaps w/ sticking because I hadn't cooked on cast iron for so long and now don't remember why I even messed w/ Teflon coated pans. There is a technique to cooking w/ cast iron,no doubt, but just knowing that the teflon coating is not ending up in my family's food is worth perfecting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stands up to its promise
I had no previous experience with cooking in cast iron, hence it took me a while to get a hang of it. (I, too, seasoned it with too much oil, corrected that, then later cooked something with too little fat and had to scrape the material AND the seasoning out...) But once I did, it has proven very useful in my kitchen.

Pros:
1. Cooks evenly.
2. Cooks very quickly and at low heat (one of the things that you need getting used to, otherwise you'll end up burning things.)
3. Versatile: As mentioned, the product consists of two cookware pieces - the pan and the skillet. I use them for deep frying, grilling, sauteing vegetables etc. Browns beautifully.

Cons:
1. Quite heavy. (But that's something I like about it and it adds to its functionality and charm for me.)
2. Need mitts to handle it, as the whole thing (including handles) become really hot.
3. Cannot use it if the dish includes tomatoes or another sour (acidic) ingredient.

Overall, it has been a wonderful experience cooking with this piece, and it really is great value for the price. Just remember to follow the instructions about seasoning properly. Also, cleaning with oil and salt and then rinsing with warm water worked well for me, as is suggested by another reviewer. This product comes with a Lodge booklet that has instructions for use (and descriptions of other Lodge products) in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect if you cook for only 1 or 2 people
This is my first piece of cast iron, so I was a little (I admit stupidly) surprised at how incredibly heavy this was, especially when the two pieces are combined to use as a dutch oven. The handles are also relatively short, which makes it more difficult to pick up, especially when it's hot. You will definitely need 2 really good oven mitts to handle this!

I also had to re-season it twice, since I used too much shortening the first time, resulting in a sticky film that wouldn't cook away. But once it was properly seasoned, I've loved using it. I use it often enough that the weight is never a factor because I just leave it on my stovetop even when it's not in use.I am amazed at how completely non-stick it is, even though I've only had it a short while. Just make sure the first couple of things you cook in it are fatty, like bacon, and nothing will ever stick to it, ever again.

It gets very hot very fast, and it heats evenly and cooks things VERY quickly, especially eggs.It also stays hot for quite a while longer even when you turn the heat off, which means it keeps cooking, so keep that in mind if you're not going to be moving your dish onto a different plate or bowl for serving.

Clean-up is also incredibly easy: a tablespoon of kosher salt mixed with canola oil to make a paste, scour this around with a paper towel, then rinse with water and dry. It takes less than a minute!

It is a little on the smaller side, which hasn't been a problem for me since I usually only cook for myself and sometimes one other person. But if there was a 5- or 6-quart version, I would probably want to get that one, especially if you cook for more than just yourself. And cast iron only gets better with age, so aside from upgrading in size, I see myself using this pot for a long time to come. ... Lodge 1/2 QT Cast Iron Melting Pot
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $12.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

On stovetop or outdoor grill, this 10-ounce, cast-iron pot can be usedto melt butter or cheese, to scald milk, and to warm syrup or basting sauce.Because cast iron is unmatched for heat retention and distribution, all of thesetasks can be accomplished without fear of scorching. The pot is 4-1/2 inches indiameter by 2-1/2 inches deep. It weighs 3 pounds, must be seasoned with meltedshortening and then baked, and needs to be coated with oil or cooking sprayafter each use to prevent rust. Cast iron's weight and care requirements put offsome cooks, but, as has been known since the Middle Ages, cast iron permitsprecise baking and flavor-retentive cooking, has a natural nonstick finish whenseasoned, and lasts for generations (thereby increasing its value). As itblackens with use, cast iron imparts to food a mystical aura of rustic nourishment and flavor.--Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT little pot!!
Have bought other small (T-Fal & Faberware) pans but this is the only one durable enough to withstand the grill.Quite handy for other small warm-ups outside and in.Very charming and rustic. A total delight to have around and an essential part of any kitchen. Great price, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a handy little pan!
This is such a handy little pan! It's just the right size for melting butter, warming syrup, or keeping basting sauce hot on the grill when you cook out. And cast iron can't be beat for durability and ease of cleaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Lodge Winner

Beautiful enough for the table and durable enough to outliveits lifetime warranty against defects, this heavy, round, 4-1/2-quartsoup pot is shaped to circulate ingredients' flavor while they simmer.Soup, stew, beans, or corned beef and cabbage then can be servedstylishly. The pot is made of cast iron, with both exterior andinterior clad in two coats of enamel. As cast iron is unexcelled for heat distribution and retention and enamel is impervious to acids and odors, the pot browns and cooks food uniformly and gently without hot spots and can be used for marinating. It's safe on any stovetop, including induction, and dishwasher-safe.The plastic knob on its heavy, tight-fitting lid is ovenproof to 450degrees F. 5-0 out of 5 stars the BEST pot ever
I love this pot! Very well made. My sis is already asking me who gets it when I die. (Nice huh?)It is just a marvelous piece of cooking equipment. Well worth every cent. This is my fourth piece of Le creuset and all but one performs perfectly. The one I'm not happy with is the frying pan with their new satin enamel something no-stick interior. Not as easy to clean as their traditional enamel and doesn't quite give the finish to foods I expected. I digress though... this pot IS easy to clean and is very versatile. I use it for soups, braised dishes, small quantities of homemade stock, stews, small pot roasts, casseroles, roasts, rissotto and anything else that will fit in it. This pot is a keeper! If I could only buy one piece of Le Crueset, this would be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great piece of cookware
This is a great piece of cookware.

I realize now that for my purposes I should have gotten the dutch oven, but for the price I am not complaining.

I use it mostly for meat sauce for spaghetti and for stews.

I have browned 4 large boneless skinless chicken breasts in it.(I suspect I could fit 6 if I tried)

Although they will not all fit/lay flattly on the bottom, when I lay them around the base (like a wreath) whatever is in contact with the pot, anywhere, browns.(lightly oil the chicken first)

As mentioned I wish I had goten the dutch oven instead because it would give me a larger FLAT cooking surface. And in reality it could be used as a soup pot as well.

This pot is not big enough to make soup (the way I do)for my family of four.I have the butcher cut up a whole chicken, then I throw in a package of wings.By the time I would add carrots, turnips, celery and water this little pot would be OVERFLOWING.I purchased an 8qt pressure cooker to make stock instead.

But this makes a really fine meat sauce for spaghetti!

Happy cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite pot!
I recently discovered how great LeCreuset cookware is!This pot is a winner and I use it more than any other. This is a good size, not too big nor too small--and the red color is fabulous. The quality of LeCreuset is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend it.Beautiful, reliable and sturdy! ... Editorial Review

For folks who eat rice on a daily--or even weekly--basis, this rice cooker has a unique fuzzy-logic microchip for advanced programming and a spherical heating system that cooks on all sides of the inner pan and makes perfect rice every time. The unit cooks from 2 - 10 cups (enough to feed a crowd of 10 or more people) of a variety of rices--white, brown, sweet, and porridge--to use in dishes such as sushi, paella, stir-fries, or curries. The cooker has settings to accommodate your preference for harder or softer rice and even has a setting for prewashed rice. The LCD screen is easy to read and the push-button controls are simple to program once you've mastered them. A programmable timer allows you to set your cooking time without worry that rice will burn or get overcooked--and the start and complete time of your cooking cycle signals with a pleasant melody (although you can choose a beep if you prefer it). Another excellent feature is the ability to keep rice warm for up to 12 hours after cooking is complete, so you can cook before work and have warm rice at dinner. The Extended Keep Warm function warms rice for up to 8 hours at a lower temperature and reduces the chance of rice drying out or becoming discolored or odorous. Both the inner pan and inner lid detach from the unit for thorough cleaning. The rice cooker has a plastic handle for transporting it from cabinet to counter and a retractable cord for easy storage. The appliance comes with two measuring cups, a spatula, and a spatula holder and is covered by a limited one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings
The rice cooker has a lot of functions that we love!!Mostly we like all the automated settings that it has.The "throw the stuff in there and start at a certain time" is awesome!Especially because the housekeeper can prepare the rice for us and set it to start cooking later on that day.The little chime that it plays when the rice is done is really cute.Sometimes the rice is a little hard for our hispanic taste...perhaps, that texture is fine for other cooking styles. It takes soooooooooooooooooooooo long to cook.We like making the rice mushy like our cuban parents made for us which takes a longtime. It is a really nice size, especially if making large amounts of rice is necessary in your kitchen. It is perfect for when we have guests. The design is cute but it does take up a lot of counter space.Overall, if I would be purchasing one again, I might not opt for this one but i'm not completely disatisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!!
I need to preface this review by saying that I never received my
Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 from Amazon.Twice they sent me the older
model, the NS-ZAC18 instead. All the while their website claims
that they have plenty of inventory, and that it ships within
24 hours.Repeated calls to Amazon get plenty of sympathetic
responses, but no action.THE BOTTOM LINE: Amazon advertises
products that it does not actually carry.

This seems to be a common theme with Amazon recently, something
tantamount to a bait-and-switch.It also occurred when I ordered
the "Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook" and had to wait a week for it
to ship, even though they claim it was in stock.I finally
received an e-mail that there was an unspecified "problem"
with the order.I called Amazon and was told that they had just
received a couple copies and one would be mine -- remember, the
whole time before this their site claimed "In Stock, ships in 24
hours".

Not good business practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RICE COOKER!!!!!! VERY GOOD RICE
I get this rice cooker for the description product and the brand, but never I can't to imagine that this rice cooker is excellent!!!!
with this rice cooker I don't have anymore problems about what quantity of water and cup of rice , this rice cooker can to adjust the temperature on the walls depending the quantity of water and obtain good rice!!! then free worries about measurement of water. For example 2 cup rice /2 cup water but if you put put 3 cup the water to 2 cup of rice the rice cooker adjust the temperature and you can get good rice!!
Everyday I use rice and different styles: Spanish/rice with vegetables/rice with coconut/rice with chicken/rice with pineapple and this rice cooker do all just I put the ingredients & spices and turn on the rice cooker and only I need to wait that finished.
I'm happy this rice cooker is the best!!! and keep warm for hours and hours the description said for more 12 hrs, but this rice cooker can keep warm for days you need reset or disconnect because in Asia everybody use warm the rice even three days.

Editorial Review

Beginning in the 1930s, two successive generations of busy cooks used pressure cookers to prepare family meals. The next generation, with memories of valves dancing and hissing on stovetops, snubbed pressure cookers. Now pressure cookers have come back, those old valves replaced by modern versions that ensure safety while delivering the speed, ease, and nutritional benefits of pressure cooking.

This heavyweight, stainless-steel beauty is a fine example of contemporary engineering and style. Its mirror finish gleams, and its black handles--including a loop handle for two-handed lifting--stay cool. Pressure-cooking traps steam to heat foods at temperatures higher than boiling. An aluminum disk in the base, sandwiched by stainless steel, speeds the process even more through fast heat conductivity. It's safe on electric, gas, ceramic, and induction stovetops. Little water is required, so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored from the steamer insert. Stews, soups, beans--even meat loaf, pork chops, and desserts such as bread pudding--come out tasty and nutritious. (A booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) You can brown meats in the pot before the lid is locked on, or use the pot without the lid. The stem of the operating valve shows high and low pressure so you can adjust heat for different foods. After cooking, the pressure can be reduced slowly (just let the cooker sit for a while), normally (press the pressure indicator), or quickly (run tepid water on the lid's rim).

Safety measures abound: the lid twists onto the pot; a rubber gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. Cleanup is a bit involved: hand wash the pot, gasket, and lid with a mild detergent, then lightly oil the gasket. Normally the valve is self-cleaning, but if food passes through it, disassembly is required. Minor cleaning inconvenience, though, should not overshadow the major convenience of pressure cooking. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
My grandmother and my mother both used pressure cookers frequently. When I was younger, one of the first kitchen items I purchased was a pressure cooker of my very own (a Hawkins Futura jiggle-type, which still works perfectly).

Recently, I decided to purchase the 7 liter Kuhn Rikon, primarily because it is larger than my Futura. Some other reviewers have noted that the Kuhn Rikon requires more monitoring than jiggle-type pressure cookers. This is only somewhat true.Jiggle-type pressure cookers release steam throughout the cooking process. This provides confirmation that the cooker is operating through sound. It IS convenient if this is what you are used to.However, these cookers require more liquid to achieve pressure and as a result, certain items can come out more watery than I prefer. You can boil away the excess liquid after releasing pressure, but then you lose some of the time saved.

The Kuhn Rikon uses an advanced enclosed system. As a result, the "sound of pressure", or hiss is missing.A small valve with two red lines provides confirmation that half and full pressure have been achieved. At this point in the cooking process, you must turn down the heat to maintain pressure only; if you leave the heat on high, pressure will continue to rise.Without sound to guide you, one must rely on visual clues. The Kuhn Rikon makes it easy. But, it IS different than listening for the hiss.

The first few times you use the cooker, you will need to determine how far to lower your cooktop temperature to maintain the pressure in the cooker. This does require monitoring and a little guess work. However, once you determine how your cooktop and pressure cooker interact, it is the same every time. From that point on, you simply wait for the red line to appear and turn your cooktop down to your pre-determined setting.Set the timer and you're almost done.Easy.In addition:

1.The enclosed system is virtually silent;
2.The enclosed system allows fast, high temperature cooking without heating up your kitchen;
3.The benefits of a lower liquid requirement to achieve high pressure can not be overstated.

The Kuhn Rikon system is different but produces superior results. For those who possess even a modicum of patience, I highly recommend this pressure cooker.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this pressure cooker
It is every bit as good as they say it is. It's very easy to use. No jiggle, no hissing, just a little sound to let you know the pressure is coming up. Just two little red lines that are easy to see. 1st. line is for low pressure, 2nd. line is for high pressure. Not only does it work like a dream, it looks like one too. If all you have every owned is a jiggle pressure cooker, please give this one a try. I'm sure you will be impressed with this 2nd generation pc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I recently purchased this pressure cooker and have found it to be extremely easy to use.I have never used a pressure cooker before. You will love this one.The size is perfect for most recipes. The instructions are clear and the book includes good recipes to get started.I am very impressed with the quality of this product and I am equally impressed with how quickly I was able to make delicious dinners. So far I have made pot roast, spaghetti sauce, turkey breast, risotto and chicken soup. Each recipe was easy to make--one would think I was cooking all day.

Fagor Multirapid Plus 6-Quart Pressure Cooker Set
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $119.99

Editorial Review

The appeal of pressure cookers has always been their ability to rapidly cook virtually any food in mere minutes without sacrificing moisture or flavor. However, they've also traditionally been a bit intimidating, as you don't want to misinterpret the instructions and overcook your feast. Enter the Fagor Multirapid Plus, a 6-quart model that simplifies the process by making pressure-cooking as easy as pressing a button. This unit features a dual pressure system for added versatility, a pasta/steamer basket, and an included recipe book (Tastefully Under Pressure) and instruction manual.

With the Multirapid Plus, a whole chicken that normally takes 60 minutes will pressure-cook in 20 minutes. Broccoli, black beans, lobster, rice, and potatoes--all pressure-cook in half the time of traditional cooking or less. The pressure cooker, made of 18/10 stainless steel with an aluminum-clad bottom, works by sealing steam within its walls to create a heat well above boiling (approximately 250 degrees F). The resulting pressure, which can't escape due to the tight seal, keeps the temperature high and cooks the food rapidly. The cooker simultaneously holds flavors and nutrients inside, letting them stew rapidly along with the meats or vegetables. Unlike older models, the lid will not open until all the steam has dissipated and the pressure has been completely released. The cooker should be hand washed and dried and cleared of food particles. The unit comes with a 10-year warranty. --Rivers Janssen

4-0 out of 5 stars about Pressure Cooking
I am a first time user I want to point out a few things for people who is consider pressure cooking.
1. It may only need 1/3 of time of conventional cooking, but it takes time to build up pressure and also time to release pressure (fagor model has a release valve which can release pressure in a minute).
2. In conventional cooking you can control heat (high/medium/low) for different type of food. In pressure cooking you have no control; heat is adjust to maintain the desire pressure (15 psi / 8 psi) you set.
3. Certain food required constant stirring like pasta in conventional cooking; you would not be able to do that in pressure cooking.
4. Food maybe too tender (bones in soup maybe soft).A multi-pressure control would be recommended (such as the duo, multirapid plus models).
5. You cannot peep inside the pot like conventional cooking to see how well the food is done during middle of cooking.
Otherwise if you like pressure cooking, this is a good quality pressure cooker.

5-0 out of 5 stars so easy to use

I happened to purchas Fagor Multirapid Plus 10-Quart not long ago. When I bought this lid, I thought it would work on both of my 6-Quart and 10-Quart pressure cookers since it stated " Fits ALL Fagor pressure cookers" under "Features".It turned out that it did not fit the 10-Quart.The lid just dropped to the bottom of my 10-Quart pressure cooker. This is a great item to own if you have 6-Quart or less pressure cooker. If you have 10-Quart pressure cooker, you are looking at the wrong lid. It's too small for the 10-Quart, therefore it does not fit ALL Fagor pressure cookers.Other than the misleading information, it's a fairly priced and good quality product. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unrivaled
This is a GREAT product for the price.AND HERE'S A TIP.I followed Lodge's seasoning instructions to the letter, and in fact, did it three times.I was hoping to speed up the seasoning process. What I got was a medium brown, but still a (food) sticky surface.Quite by accident, I put it over the stove, turned both burners up to med-high (med-high+?) and moved the griddle around over the burners every 10 minutes or so.After about 1 1/2 hours I had a blackened seasoned surface that matched the Lodge preseasoned grill press that I also bought! Not quite as non-stick, but a few uses have fixed that! I'm not sure that Lodge would approve, and there will be some smoke, but it seems to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent investment that will last forever
I have had this grill for almost a year and remain very happy with it.I primarily purchased it for the grill side but the other side is very handy as well - for example for large amounts of pancakes.

Cast iron isn't no maintanence -especially at the beginning - but after time it will be a piece that is non-stick forever if you maintain its finish. It's essentally non-destructable and will be around forever if cared for.Use, seasoning and care directions come with the griddle.

I have cooked quite alot of things on the griddle and I find it best for things that arent going to let off an excessive amount of grease. There is a rim that runs along the bottom to catch the grease but I find it shallow for cooking things such as bacon. That said I have cooked many other kinds of meat successfully...

It fits over 2 of my burners easily on a standard sized stove.I have learned to turn the gas burners on first - before putting the griddle on.If I dont they light and sometimes the flame comes up over the side- only for a second but safety first.I can also set one burner lower than the other...one end to cook on and one end more of a *keep warm* side.I like that very much.

My only caution would be that you really do need to either keep a window open or have a nice strong exhaust fan.Mine isnt all that strong and I find without opening a window this produces more smoke that my fan can handle. But this is grilling and a grill pan would produce the same issue.

This is an item that will last forever and assuming you are willing to care for it, especially at first, in the correct manner you will love it.Considering that more and more information on non-stick coatings suggest they arent a healthy choice, cast iron is becomming more and more desirable.**of note- non-stick coatings can kill birds and if you have pet birds they are a distinct health risk.**

If you have the space to store this and are able to handle the weight of moving this to wash and put away this is an excellent and healthful life time purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing we've bought in years
That was my husband's comment this evening. We all love this thing. We use the griddle side for pancakes and eggs and french toast and plain ol' grilled cheese, although we've kind of given up on the "plain ol'" stuff. We use the grill side with a press for pannini and our new favorite kind of grilled cheese! We cook steaks and chicken and hot dogs and pork chops - you name it, we cook it.It never leaves the stove top, except to be cleaned (and to clean the admittedly greasy cooktop.)

One note that I haven't seen mentioned - we have a glass top stove.I was told (after I got and used this thing) that it couldn't be used with a glass top stove.Ummm, well, yeah, it can.A LOT!With great success.

One other note - we don't ever heat it higher than medium high and things cook extremely well. We had pork chops tonight and they were fantastic - just a nice cross-hatch of grill marks on the outside and perfectly cooked and juicy inside. That's when my husband made the comment in the title.

As for cleaning, we try to let excess stuff burn off for 15 minutes or so after we take the food off the grill. This works really well. Then I (let's be honest - the menfolk don't clean this puppy) put in across the sinks and scrub it with a stiff brush. No soap. Then I dry it and brush it with oil.If I really had to work hard at the cooked on food, I might even heat it up again to re-season it.

I grew up with cast iron skillets. My great-great-grandmother's cast iron skillet. It's passed down through our family to the daughter who has the most kids.(With only 1 child, I was never in the running!) That thing is so well seasoned you can cook almost anything in it without sticking. Oh, and it's 16" across. That's where that rule comes in about having the most kids!

I look forward to the day when my grill/griddle is that well seasoned.Considering how often we use it, it shouldn't take long! ... Read more

The versatile Le Creuset Grill is a reversible cooking pan for making grill marks on fresh salmon filets or griddling up a batch of burgers. It's enameled cast iron holds the heat over any cooking source and distributes it evenly from one end of the grill to the other--the cast iron is made using traditional foundry techniques and Le Creuset's well-known workmanship. The pan is coated with satin black enamel to avoid odor absorption, so this morning's French toast won't taste like last night's fajitas. The slim grill slides away for storage and is dishwasher-safe. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Heavy and difficult to clean!
This pan is VERY heavy.I agree with other reviewers who recommend the Lodge grill pan as a cheaper and similar alternative.I found this pan difficult to clean since I don't have a sink basin large enough to soak the entire pan.Truly a disappointment for the $$.I have ordered the All-Clad grill pan (cast aluminum) for the lighter weight.Although I am a fan of LeCreuset cookware, I do not recommend this pan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad enamel, too expensive
I just got this grill and was very excited to use it.It cooked my spareribs to perfection and I was elated. It all stopped there. It took some doing to clean the grill, as you cannot use abrasives for fear of ruining the enamel coating as stated in the instructions. Then when I took it out to use it the next day it had rust dots all over it.

So from my experience, the enamel coating doesn't make it easier to clean and does not seal it from rusting. These are the reason I paid the big bucks for a great name like Le Creuset. For 1/4 the price you can get a regular cast iron griddle that should provide the same results...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great...but expensive

Chefs will tell you what your grandmother alreadyknew: nothing beats cast-iron cookware for durability, conductivity, and value. Because cast iron distributes heatso evenly, it's the perfect material for making pizzas, giving them the golden, beautifully textured crust that'sso difficult to achieve outside of a pizzeria's brick oven. And, because cast iron retains heat so well, it also keepspizza or roasted vegetables piping hot while you wait toserve them. At 14 inches in diameter, this pan servesenough pizza or vegetables for the whole family. Season thepan properly and foods won't stick either--no need for asynthetic nonstick coating that might peel or crack. Besure not to use dishwashing liquid on seasoned cast iron, and towel dry and coat with a light layer of oil afterwashing. Never leave cast iron sitting in water, because itwill rust. If you treat your cast-iron cookware properly, your own grandchildren will still be using it when thatfancy aluminum-alloy pan is long gone. --Mary Park ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this pan!!!
Even frozen pizza turns out better on this one!We like crispy crust...something you never truly got with the other pans until it was close to setting off the smoke alarm. With this pan you get crispy crust everytime! Also builds strong muscles from lifting it in and out of the oven (careful..it's heavy, not one to be dropping on your foot)...cut your pizza right on the pan...no problems.

Appeals to my "thrifty" side...I should never have to buy another pizza pan again with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great time saver and perfect crust with thick pizza
The cast iron enables a shortcut that can't be done with a stone: we place the cold pan with (kinda thick) pizza on the high burner for 2-3 min before putting it in the oven. The rapid preheat of the pan promotes a good crust and speeds up baking. The handles make it easy to transfer into an oven (which may still be approaching our baking temperature of 450 F). This technique gives us a better result (nicely browned firm crust), while saving lengthy preheat time and eliminating the occasionally messy process of sliding a pizza on and off the stone with a wooden peel. Note also that the cast iron pan, unlike the stone, can be used for storing and reheating leftover slices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect pancakes, fajitas, the skies the limit.
I was so pleased to be able to make so many pancakes and pieces of French toast at one time, but then I tried it for fajitas. Even better!Marinate steak strips in lime juice, oil, tequila, a few other ingredients. Toss it on the hot pan with sliced veggies, shop aimlessly at Amazon for a few minutes, come back flip everything and there's dinner.Great pan! ... Read more

Roasted garlic is all the rage, and for good reason: its sweet, savory flavor adds depth and richness to many dishes and it's an easy appetizer when served with a crusty loaf of bread. This terra cotta garlic baker comes equipped with a basic recipe to get you started. There's even a microwave version, but taking the time in the oven gives the best results. The glazed bottom of the baker is easy to clean and the porous, unglazed lid holds in just enough moisture to bake the garlic until it has carmelized, without drying it out. The baker can also be used to store fresh garlic between uses. --Julija Gelazis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Smell the garlic
I am a slave for garlic, and this makes such yummy whole roasted cloves. Though rumor has it, you can seperate the cloves!I love the smell of garlic as I am roasting it, then I can take the yummy roasted cloves and smoosh them into garlic spread, or just toss them onto or into casseroles, potatoes, soups or onto fish.

My only complaint, is that the smell gets into this and permeates what it is near.Thinking maybe if I zipped it in a ziplock that might help it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have' for Garlic Lovers!!
Being a collector of kitchen gadgets, I purchased this a few years ago and it disappeared among the other items in my collection. I found it recently and bought some fresh garlic, drizzled it with olive oil, and sprinkled some fresh thyme over it. About 45 minutes later, the house was filled with the aroma of roasted garlic....YUMMM!!! I have used roasted garlic with mashed potatoes and will never again do it any other way. The Norpro works much better than foil as it bakes the garlic more evenly. I use this item all the time now and just toss it in the oven when I'm roasting another main dish or casserole. It's so good that you may find yourself wanting more than one, as there is nothing that tastes better than food smothered in roasted garlic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does the job
I used to roast garlic by wrapping it up in foil and putting that in the oven, which proved to be a real pain in the neck. This roasts the garlic really well, the only thing I can say is that if you drizzle olive oil over the garlic (as I do) that I've experienced some "stickiness" that is hard to get off, but that's probably due more to the oil than the roaster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mine going strong after over 3 years
I came back to update my original review and was surprised at some of the negative comments.

My family does not care for steamed fish, so I cannot address that issue. It does a great job, however, on rice, vegetables, and boiled eggs at any level of hardness you like.

I can, however, address the issue of water on the counter. I use mine at least 2 or 3 times a week and it didn't take me long after purchase to discover that not all of my counter tops are level. I located the area of the one which is, however, and never had the overflow problem again.

I bought it in May, 2001, and it stopped working in July, 2002. That involved a toll-free call to Zojirushi in California, a part which cost all of $7.50, and ten minutes' worth of my time in changing out the part. Now, in July of 2004, it still works like a champ. It's hard to beat that kind of staying power - not to mention repairabilty - in small kitchen appliances these days.

I will definitely buy from Zojirushi again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only so-so
This is a versatile appliance but since I purchased it to cook small amounts of rice, it's a bit of a disappointment. Everytime I steam rice, lots of water overflows onto the counter top. I am afraid that it will reach another appliance and electrocute someone or start a fire. According to the instructions, you're to add water to the bowl of rice itself, but it seems to be too much for the steamer to handle. The rice comes out perfect, but I think this will be my last time using it for that purpose. It sometimes overflows [from the base] when steaming other foods for a long time, so it's not always just the rice. Don't buy this steamer. Nice concept, not so smart design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product.
I have had mine for several months now and it works great. It is quite versatile in terms of different food items, even though I have used it only to steam vegetables, and occasionally (white) rice, and it does great with both. I have not tried eggs, meats or fish (and probably never will, even though I might try eggs someday). The only drawback is the small size (one cup) of the rice bowl. It would be adequate for one or two people, but not for larger quantity. It cleans easily, except the water container which cannot be opened and takes a long time to dry on the inside. I bought it mainly to steam vegetables, and it is wonderful at that. I definitely recommend. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Norpro's three-piece bamboo steamer set could steam a whole meal. At 10 inches in diameter and 6-1/4 inches high, it is large enough for eight pork buns (there's a recipe on the box) on one level and a mound of broccoli, carrots, and snap peas on the other. Just put the steamer in a wok or frying pan that has a little water in it. Then arrange the food in the steamer, cover, and heat the water.

Steaming is a remarkable healthy cooking style--it uses no oil, retains more vitamins and nutrients than other cooking methods, and helps seal in moisture. The lowest tier of the steamer will cook foods more quickly, so use it for larger items. Wash the steamer by hand, and give it a thin coat of vegetable oil after washing to keep the bamboo from drying out. --A.J. Rathbun ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Quality is a bit lacking...
I have to say that I am a bit disappointed with the quality of this steamer. For example, the walls (which are made of thin layers of bamboo bonded together) are a bit rough and unevenly bonded, and fastened into their circular shape with copper wire. Thin strips of bamboo are interwoven to form the base of each of the steamer sections. Today, I bought a Typhoon brand one (8" diameter), which, by contrast, is really nicely made of all natural materials, has a base made of thicker pieces of bamboo rather than thin strips, and cost less.Of course, the Norpro one will do the job and if you need a larger steamer, it should work just fine--I am just overall happier with the Typhoon product.

5-0 out of 5 stars A kitchen essential.
For healthy, nutritional, quick, low mess cooking, make almost any dish with a steamer. This steamer is mid range in terms of quality of material and build. It isn't the El Cheapo department store variety that is held together with metal staples, bound to end up in the trash can after several uses. With proper care, this steamer should last you several years.Soak the new steamer in cold water for a few hours when you first get it.Always store in an open air place to prevent mildew.Clean up is a breeze, just wipe with a paper towel, or if needed a quick dunk in soapy water and then rinse.

Steamers fit best on woks that are 2 inches larger than the steamer, therefore, a 12 inch wok would work best with this steamer.Other than the recipe on the side of the box, there is nothing in the box other than the steamer. You can cook or reheat your food by placing it directly on the bamboo, paper towel, leaves, parchment paper or by placing it on a heat resistant plate or in a bowl. Also, you can add or remove steamer layers while cooking. For even quicker food prep, if you're having noodles with the meal, you can cook them in the water in the bottom of the wok - a one pan meal.Steaming is truly quick and efficient cooking at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinner in Minutes
I fill this 2-Tier Bamboo Steamer with fish steaks, such as sea bass or halibut, and veggies, such as asparagus or broccoli. Then I place the steamer baskets with the lid over a wok containing a cup or so of water, and, in about fifteen minutes, dinner is ready. I put the fish steaks on top of plain white folded paper towels, so it is easy to wipe off the steamer basket when done. I store the baskets on top of a hanging pot rack. Because these baskets and lid are 10 inches in diameter, they work best on a small to medium-sized round wok placed on a gas ring. I have found this method works better on a gas range rather than on an electric or ceramic stove top. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars average tasting coffee, not espresso
for all who are expert coffee tasters I will say 'lower your expectations'.
1)This device makes good tasting coffee but far away from espresso. It lacks thickness and smell.
2)The rubber tears off quickly.
3) Hard to clean without using soap
4) the bottom part is not polished so it changes its colour and builds up residue, which does not smell good. Also when left wet it forms white spots, which presumably come from the aluminium. ALUMINIUM IS DANGEROUS FOR YOUR HEALTH!
5)don't fool yourselves reading other reviews and get a stainless steel one!

With this ingenious device it's not necessary to acquire a complicated, steam-type cappuccino maker. Frothing milk for a caffe latte or cappuccino takes just seconds. Here's how it works: Pour up to a cup of either hot or cold milk into the creamer. (Milk can be heated by placing the creamer on a stovetop.) Place the lid on the creamer and grasp the lid's stay-cool plastic neck with one hand. Grasp the plastic ball atop the creamer in the other hand and move it up and down approximately 20 times. Hidden inside, a screen at the bottom of a rod attached to the ball forces air into the milk, creating froth. (Keep that principle in mind and think of creating frothy milkshakes, also.) To the top of the ball, the creamer stands 8-3/4 inches high. Made of stainless steel polished to a mirror finish, the creamer is dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more

This is great...I would heat the milk in the microwave to about 160F in order to avoid scaulding it on the stove.I usually pump about 50 times...the more the better:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
It froths even fat-free milk!Have not tried to froth cold milk.I find that it takes more than the 20 recomended pumps to get it frothy like I like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frothy Perfection!
I love this little gadget! First, I love the results. Pour milk into the pitcher -- heat on the stove -- (unless you want cold froth--and I often do) -- pump the handle up and down 20-25 times -- wait a minute -- and lift out the thick and fluffy frothed milk. Second, I love the fact that there's no electricity involved. With my little Bialetti Moka Express and this gem, I could make cappuccino on a campfire! AND, as living overseas has meant that all of my electrical gadgets have to be run through a transformer, I really appreciate the fact that there's no plug! Also, considering that the price of this milk frother is what you'd spend in less than 2weeks with a Starbuck's habit, it's a great value! ... Read more
