Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 6-1/2-Quart Saucepot with Pasta Insert
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $221.00

    Editorial Review

If you've ever suffered a steam burn draining your spaghetti through a colander, you'll appreciate this three-piece pasta set. A 6-quart insert sits inside the saucepan, so when your pasta is appropriately al dente, just lift the insert for instant drainage. The 6-1/2-quart saucepan has a pure aluminum core for fast heat conductivity so the water will boil faster. Because aluminum can dent, warp, or discolor easily, a hard-anodized coating protects the saucepan and increases its durability. The lid is also hard anodized, which means the oxide film of aluminum has been thickened to protect the pan. The insert is stainless steel, so it won't react to food and will retain its shape through a lifetime of use. The set includes a collector's edition recipe card to get you started on your pasta-cooking adventures. While most metal utensils are safe with anodized surfaces, avoid sharp tools, such as knives. For optimum longevity, this set should be hand washed. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for corn or pasta
I love this for boiling corn or pasta. It doesn't have the nonstick surface like the 2 1/2 quart saucepan, but I bought this for easy draining and it gets the job done well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavily used in our household !
I bought this set over a year ago.Although it is on the smaller side, I have to say it is probably the second most used pot in our household (the first being the 2 1/2 qt shallow commercial anodized sauce pan!).It works well for meals for my family of four.I routinely boil 1 pound of pasta or approx. 5 lbs of cubed potatoes for mashed potatoes.I have made soup, chili and spaghetti sauce in the pot as well. It's the right size for enough of these dishes for my family, plus some leftovers to freeze for another full meal.I don't find it as "narrow" or difficult to use as my 8 qt stock pot - the height seems perfect for the width of this pot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but small
This is a nice pot and fits the burners on my stove without hanging over.

    There are two disadvantages:

1.The 6 1/2 qt. size is barely sufficient for 16 oz of macaroni. An 8 qt. pot with insert would've been better.I know Calphalon has an 8 qt. stock pot and an 8 qt. insert, but they don't appear to offer these packaged together, making a set prohibitively expensive.

2.Contrary to what Top 100 Reviewer Michela says above, the stainless steel insert does get hot, and you can burn your hands on the insert handles if you're not using towels or mitts.

Water, aluminum, and stainless steel are fairly good conductors of heat, so all of the elements of this set get hot (which is what you want) EXCEPT for the silverstone handles on the stock pot.

I have mixed feelings about using an insert. You usually have to dispose of the macaroni cooking water anyway, so dumping the entire contents of the pot into a colander makes sense, rendering unnecessary the insert.

Also, if you sauce your macaroni in the pot in the traditional Italian fashion, you're not going to want the water in there, again eliminating the need for an insert.

Alton Brown makes a good point in his new book about getting the biggest pot for making macaroni that you can fit in a cabinet. He suggests going with a cheap aluminum job from a restaurant supply store, because you want it to be as light as possible when filled with water and macaroni.

As other reviewers have noted, 6.5 quarts is sufficient for 16 oz of macaroni or less.If you routinely need to cook more than a pound, you're going to need a much bigger pot.

I have a monster 16 qt. Farberware stainless steel stock pot for times like this.It may not be quite as light as Alton Brown's suggested non-anodized aluminum restaurant supply store model, but it will hold up better over the long term and probably didn't cost too much more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pot out there!
This pot not only cooks anything and everything evenly, but when I use this for stews and chowders, the food stays hot in the pot for up to 1/2 hr after it's off of the stove. I love this pot!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the right size
I bought this saucepot because I had the 3 1/2 quart pot, and it wasn't quite big enough for a batch of macaroni & cheese or a stew. This one is just the right size for a family of around four people.Calphlon makes good sturdy basic cookware, which is why it costs what it does.I like the fact that I can put it in the oven, keep a soup or stew overnight in the fridge and then put the same pot back on the stove the next day. To me, that compensates for having to remember to use pot holders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Try it, you'll love it!
I just bought this little guy, and love it. I was looking for a Calphalon Hard Anodized 5 qt, and couldn't find what I was after (that's a hint, Calphalon!), so I decided to give this one a whirl. I was afraid it would be too small for a batch of spaghetti sauce or chili, but it turned out to be a perfect size for a family of 4. I'm a fan of the hard anodized line anyway - ever since I bought one of the 2 1/2 quart shallow saucepans. Great heat conduction, nice weight, might as well be nonstick, and just about indestructable. I'm not one that enjoys molly-coddleing my cookware, and this stuff doesn't need it. Oh and a hint - it cleans up really nice with Soft Scrub. Calphalon tells you this in the little booklet they send with - but who reads all that stuff? Enjoy - you won't be disappointed! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This straight-sided 2-1/2-quart pan can be used for sauces and, covered with its flat lid, for stews and casseroles. Shallow (3 inches) in relation to its capacity and diameter (8-3/8 inches), this pan, unlike conventionally proportioned saucepans, exposes lots of surface and is therefore ideal for reducing sauces or even stocks and broths. Though it's not nonstick, like some Calphalon cookware, the matte-finish pan is anodized for stick-resistance as well as hardness. Metal utensils won't harm the surface. The contoured, textured handle is cast stainless steel and resists heating on the stovetop; it's also triple-riveted for durability and balance. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Kitchen Essential
I wasn't sure just what I'd use this unusual pan for, but itIS Calpahlon, and MAN, what a great price!I've had it for several months now, and it has quickly become my "side dish" pan. I use it for cooking scalloped potatoes, rice dishes, vegetables, you name it. It's the perfect size for cooking side dishes for a family of 2-4 people. The flatter bottom gives much better heat distribution throughout the food. I use this pot at practically ever dinner I prepare. With proper care it has held up beautifully and is easy to clean. Don't let the rather odd description put you off...this is little pot is a workhorse with an unbeatable price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice saucepan, good price
I have used this pan for around 3 months, so far I satisfy with my purchase through Amazon. it do have a distinguish difference between other cheap saucepan, but sometimes I found that it's rather sticky.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE one!!
I love it! The only thing Ive had a problem with (and I even had this happen with my wolfgang puck cookware) is heating oil to fry the kids some french fries. If you dont let it heat just like the directions say then the frozen food will stick pretty bad! But thats minor and with how fast these little babies heat its not even a problem. Im giving away the puckware. Ive got the whole calphalon H.A. line. I love it!! Calphalon cookware does it all.... What everyone says about not being dishwasher safe... Even if it was I wouldnt put mine in the dishwasher.. I wont even use metal on them. To me they are worth the extra care they require. ... Read more

    2-0 out of 5 stars Great pan...but
This was my favorite pan for about a year. It is very versatile and cooks well.I always used plastic utensils, and a non-abrasive scrub brush, but, nontheless, after a year of use, the coating is coming off the pan.I'm going to pitch it because I don't want to be eating the coating. This is the second Calphalon pan that did this to me. I think you may have to spend the big bucks to get a decent pan that will last.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Everyday Pan in this household
This pan truly fits its name.I use it for everything. On the stove or in the oven, it works great!Cleanup is easy as well.I haven't had any problems with the non stick surface and I've owned it for two years.I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if and when the non stick surface wears off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Pan, but ...
When I first purchased it, I loved it.We used it about 2-3 times a week.I am very careful as to use wooden spoons or rubber spatulas so as not to scratch the surface of the pan. After about 7 or 8 months of use, the non-stick surface started to wear off.I still use it, however, but am looking for a replacement.I cannot find this exact same pan anymore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OXO HAS GREAT PRODUCTS!!!
OXO has a fabulous line of products, no matter where you purchase them. You will fall in love the first time that you use them, literally. I have so many products by OXO, you would think that I work for the company itself. Just the other day I found a Soft Grip Spatula by OXO at Target and I love it already. OXO can be expensive, but it is well worth it. I found there products to be very long lasting as well. I have measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls with grips, tongs, and the actual set. I am trying to find other products as well. I did not know that Target carried OXO, now I can come to shop at Target. They are worth every penny. I have had my 9-pc. set for over 3-4 years now, it has yet to mess up. Great Buy!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Known
When adding items to our wedding registry, I DID NOT ADD THIS SELECTION. Mostly because I already had a couple of spoons and spatulas. But, here it is more than a year after marriage and I am still adding individual pieces to my utensil drawer. I finally got around to buying a peeler last week (and it's an OXO brand peeler). I wish I would've known.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke after about ten uses
The first couple of times I used this cheese slicer, the wire stretched out, making the slices thicker than they're supposed to be.Today I finally cut through a hard hunk of sharp cheddar and POP - the wire broke. For $20, I expect more.Next time I'll buy a non-wire cheese slicer.VERY disappointed as I expect more of OXO.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go witht the traditional "cheese plane" type
Like in the other reviews, the wire broke after only a few uses. I just emailed OXO and asked for a replacement. I hope they honor the satisfaction garantee!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fine while it worked
It does the job while it works.. then the wire went slack and finally broke, like everyone else. I could call and get a replacement but do I want to bother? The handle is not very sturdy for leveraging hard ice cream. The metal shaft only extends for two-thirds of the length of the handle, leaving an empty rubber sheath for the final third.Overall, not a terrible scoop, but I expected a better handle out of a product that is called "Good Grips".

This is no ordinary spatula--the bright red head tells you that immediately. Use it to stir up a pot of spaghetti sauce, and the spatula won't discolor. It's heat-resistant up to 400 degrees--great for long, slow stirring--so no fears of it melting or warping. You can also use it for tasting and scraping the walls of your nonstick cookware--it won't damage them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quality problems
I purchased a few of these for myself and friends. From the day I got my spoon spatula it was my favorite kitchen tool, especially since I could use it when making sauces or frying onions and veggies. One day when making a non-meat tomato sauce the handle simply broke off leaving the handle in my hand and the spatula in the pot. I wrote to OXO about this twice in the last 2 months with no reply and this is most frustrating to me. Anyway, I am now using a KitchenAid product which feels much more sturdy and KitchenAid responds to e-mails IMMEDIATELY.

1-0 out of 5 stars OXO Good not so good this time
the spoon is great but the handle bends like a noodle.

3-0 out of 5 stars good and bad
Wow, another reviewer hit the nail on the head for me. I like this spoon, in theory. I like that it's red, because despite other claims, I've found that tomato sauce WILL stain my white and clear ones.

But, like they said. I never want to use it, because the shaft is so damn flimsy. That plus the handle is almost TOO thick, and the combination of the two I find myself holding it by the shaft. I think I prefer thinner instruments, since I've been using these cheapo spoons I got at the supermarket rather than all my ergonomic stuff (oxo, kitchenaid..)

Despite that, I would probably love it 100% if the shaft was totally rigid. The spoon part is flexible enough to make up for total ridgity in the shaft. (no snickering!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tong Perfection...
We have owned these tongs for a while now and I cannot find anything to complain about! The handle(s) are very sturdy - allowing you to really get a good squeeze on something if it is heavy or slippery. The stainless steel always emerges from the dishwasher spotlessly clean and the "locking" mechanism allows these to be stored in the folded position, saving me a lot of cluttered drawer headaches!

Seriously, these would be good tongs at any price and at this price they are well worth the money spent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice while they lasted
The locking feature was great, it made them much more manageable while in use and for storage. However, the plastic grips starting coming out very soon after I bought the tongs. Not long after that, the locking mechanism broke. This made them very hard to use and store, so we chunked them and bought a different kind.It is probably worth a little extra money to get tongs that last.

My first choice is always my stand mixer (hands-free operation). However, there are times when I'm using the stand mixer and I need to mix something else. This thing is powerful -- the best hand mixer I've ever used.None of that funny smell you get when you do stiff cookie dough with other mixers.I love the on/off switch.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough power...
This Kitchenaid mixer looks great, works flawlessly, but really underperforms. It's a seven-speed model, but I had to switch to another standup mixer to whip cream because the Kitchenaid hand mixer just wasn't fast or powerful enough.A real disappointment... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away from this Model/Line of Toaster Ovens!!!
Hi.After a very long search for my idea of the "perfect" toaster oven, I happened upon this one, Model 297.It had the 6-slice capacity, the flat front and top, easy clean interior AND the room for cooking a pizza or a chicken.I thought, Wow, after a 2-yr search, this is the one.I was so thrilled!!
I got home, and first of all it was a constant battle to get the toast right -- either too light or too dark. The controls were very cheap-feeling and unpredictable, and to make toast required remembering to set two dials, also.(And you need glasses, as there's only a tiny recessed "pimple" to indicate the starting point on the controls.) I figured that might take time to get used to and was prepared to accept that. Also, there was no way to tell when the oven was preheated to your selected temp.(no bell, no light on or off, etc.).Also, although it allows for the size for cooking pizza, there is no way to control the heat flow, so according to the instructions you must stand over it and be prepared to rotate the pizza several times while it cooks, which can take up to a half hour.I never did get a properly cooked pizza out of it - either undercooked or overcooked the moment I turned away. However, I actually got to make a grilled cheese sandwich in it one day and thought that maybe I was on the right track. After 2 years without a toaster oven and 3 months without a toaster, I decided to try to stiff it out and keep this one, faults and all. Then, less than 2 weeks after setting it up, the heating elements just plain DIED!!The light was on, but it was absolutely stone cold!Tried different outlets, let it rest and started from scratch -- NOTHING !!!
So, here I am, back to Square One.I'm on my way to lug this thing back to the store.I'm disabled, so this is a big deal to have to do.And, after reading the other reviews on Amazon for this and similar models, I've decided I'm not even going to ask for a replacement.Clearly, this is not a fluke -- these and similar Krups toaster ovens have the same M.O. -- they work for a little while and then drop dead.I'm so very disappointed.
I suspect that the few decent reviews I read were referring to older, more reliable models.Clearly, whether black or white, the regular or premium model, it just doesn't matter. They for the most part cease to operate early on in the game.
Please, save yourself the aggravation -- try another brand, or at least another line.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but just dropped dead
Its almost like there is a warranty timer built into this unit. The day after, it simply stops working. It is a so so toaster, but not great. The rotary knobs and timers are sort of junky. But now, as it no longer works 1 year and 1 day after we bought it, and Krups will not fix it, I will no longer buy another Krups product as long as I live. They are aweful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lasted more than four years!!!
I have had this toaster oven for more than four years and it just broke down now.I have used it for toasting, broiling and baking and I never have had any problems. For toasting, just like any other toaster oven, you have to learn how long to leave the toast in the oven.I'm thinking about purchasing the same toaster oven now. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Microwave
When we moved to a microwaveless house, this was the microwave that caught our eye over all the others in the showroom. Its design is nice and clean, not bulky and ugly. It held a surprisingly large amount of food for so small an oven. Cooking is even, and the rare clean up wipes up easily. Never had a repair needed, never had a bulb or anything burn out. And our popcorn never burnt, either! It did an impressive job... my only regret is that my ex-husband helped himself to it when we got divorced, when it was supposed to go to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microwave
The other reviewer mentioned things getting hot, and it obviously does, however it is much faster than most other microwaves of similar size and power.Maybe it is the "inverter technology" or the way the waves are generated but it is much quicker than others. Also clear easy to use quick start panel and larger print on the buttons and panels than many others.Great all purpose size, I generally use it for tv dinners and reheats.Plus you get this brands reliability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure does get things Hot!
But that might just be because I'm not used to it. It heated up my morning cup of coffee to Lava-Like temperature in only a minute and a half. The Reheat feature lets you just enter the nmber of servings you put in and it heats them right up. I can't get OVERLY excited, because it is just a Microwave, but it sure does get stuff hot. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT NONSTICK!!!
These cookie sheets look great, until you use them. They are not non-stick unless you grease them GENEROUSLY.Then the grease bakes on and you cannot get it off. This happened after only using a few times and washing them immediately after use. They are also hard to clean because they are too big to immerse in a kitchen sink and not recommended for the dishwasher (they wouldn't fit in one anyway!).I agree that it is hard to make a good cookie with these. The bottoms are always over done. And it is hard to get the cookies off the sheet without damaging them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boo! These Stink!
These sheets are quite impressive visually-they appear to be of high quality and sturdy. That's about it, though. They're great to look at, not use. I find that I have to lightly grease the sheets to ensure that cookies don't stick, even when the recipe doesn't call for it and these are supposed to be nonstick, after all. And when I do that, the spaces between the cookies get the grease baked on. I don't usually go by one or two bad reviews on a product, especially one that has alot of reviews, but I should have this time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Calphalon Convenience but Poor Baking Results
After several weeks of use, I've also found that these sheets tend to burn dough on the bottom long before you see any hint of any browning around the edges. This has caused us problems on several established recipes and the sheets don't seem to allow for any workaround, i.e. lower oven temperature and/or shorter bake time.

Like all Calphalon, they clean up very easily but what's the point if you can't trust them with your food in the first place?

    PROS
*Extremely reliable nonstick surfaces and durable construction as you'd expect from Calphalong

    CONS
*Uneven baking results will leave you with lots of "surprise" burnt items. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Silpat
These mats are nice, but they don't work as well as Silpat. They are just as non-stick, but they will stain more than Silpat do --- mine has brown stains where cookies once burnt, whereas my Silpat doesn't.And Silpat isn't even that much more expensive if you use froogle or look at their website for wholesalers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just wish there were more sizes!
This is a great tool - really reduces cleaning time and the agony of cookies or other items that could stick to the pan.I've have no problems using it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow, where did I go wrong???
I used the Matfer sheet for a pizza crust but didn't have it more than 5 minutes in the approx. 400 degree oven before a horrible smell filled the apartment and the smoke alarms began shrieking. This was a brand new sheet, so there was no residual grease on this matt, as one suggested to another experiencing this problem.

A few others with the problem also seem to be in an apartment, so perhaps the smell is better tolerated or not as noticeable in a larger house?Or did a bunch of us get defective sheets?Until I'd find out, I couldn't recommend this product. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Although it cut great at first, within a couple of months it wasn't cutting much better than the cheap, generic bread knife it had replaced. At $10 or less, it's a decent knife but don't expect it to hold its edge for long. Henckels or not, it's still a low-grade knife.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap price, not a cheap knife
I have been wanting a Henckel bread knife for some time, and even had it on my Christmas list, but no one took the hint. When I came across this one for $9.99 at Amazon I was very skeptical, but after reading the other reviews I decided to order it. When it arrived I immediately opened the box to check it out.I found it to be a good size, feels good in my hand, is very well weighted, and after washing and drying it, put it to the test.I sliced into a tomato, and it worked beautifully----I can make very thin slices without smushing. Then, I peeled and sliced a grapefruit with it---lovely.I still haven't used it on bread, but will as soon as I have time to make some crusty peasant herb bread or a loaf of focaccia.I have made a gazillion purchases from Amazon, everything from books to phones, toys, cutting boards, flatware, videos, yoga mats, all kinds of goodies, but have never felt compeled to write a review until now. That should tell you how much I love this knife.I did not give it five stars only because I assume the German made version must be superior---but then look at the cost. This is one of my happier purchases from Amazon. If you would like a great bread knife to use on bread, slice sandwiches, tomatoes, fruit, etc., get this one.For ten bucks it's a steal. And if you should see bread knife on someone's wish list, give them this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's a bread knife and it works...that's all
no complaints, no praises...other than it cuts bread. When I shopped, this seemed like the best priced bread knife. It works perfectly, but if there's cheaper out there...unless you're set on the looks of this one, get the cheaper one. They're bread knives - they have to be very good to do what they're supposed to do. ... We liked this knife very much until the handle broke off while cutting pizza.Used for about 3 mos & never put in the dish washer or left submerged in water.I found the the knife required little shapening as the blade was hard & that portion in the handle was also hardened unfortunately and broke due to a brittle fracture. How do I get a warranty replacement?

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a chefs knife
This knife is a nice little multi-purpose knife. Like others have said it loses its edge fast, but is soft steel that sharpens quickly. This knife, however, is not useful for chopping or mincing. The bolster is too small and after chopping a few items you'll find that you have bloody knuckles, not very appetizing while preparing food. I bought this knife for camping but I don't find it as useful as a proper chefs knife.

I got these knives 2 years ago and still have yet to sharpen them. They work great for every little thing I have to cut.The red knife is great for slicing through muffins or small loaves of bread, my husband likes it for cutting sandwiches. The little blue knife is great for peeling potatoes or apples and the other two do all kinds of various cuttings.I would definitely buy them again or give them as gifts. I also like the colored handles not only for the colors sake but they are easy to remember which knife is which when the handle is the only thing poking out of the cup I have them standing in.

5-0 out of 5 stars the only kitchen scissors you'll ever need
A pair of these scissors came with a set of Sabatier knives that I ordered, and I liked them so much that I bought a second pair separately. They are easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. The high quality of the construction ensures that they will last for years, and I find the design to be ergonomically suited to the hand as well as pleasing to the eye.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Durable, Low End Sabatier
As part of purchasing multiple Sabatier knife sets over the years I've come to own two pairs of these shares.

They are decent low end shears, mass produced in China.I am surprised these shears are getting such great reviews.I was AMAZED someone was using them to cut food, but I've since learned for delicate herbs such as fresh chives, this is actually recommended.Still, these are kitchen shears not poultry shears.I don't reach for these shears when food is involved.

I keep a pair in a kitchen drawer and use them for "light duty" jobs such as cutting off basil or thyme leaves.I can't imagine using these shears to open a bottle since mine have visibly bent from light duty.

Low end shears by Henkels International will last much longer AND many of their shears can be taken apart and sharpened.

These shears are made of the same medium quality steel Sabatier uses for their Chinese knife sets and this steel will rust if left wet of if food remains on the blade.

Of course, you should always hand wash and dry knives and kitchen shears but these will rust more easily than the high end German and French steel products (which cost much more of course).

You'd be better off with one of the higher end shears sold on Amazon. ...
