Editorial Review

Alton Brown, host of Food Network's Good Eats, is not your typical TV cook. Equal parts Jacques Pépin and Mr. Science, with a dash of MacGyver, Brown goes to great lengths to get the most out of his ingredients and tools to discover the right cooking method for the dish at hand. With his debut cookbook, I'm Just Here for the Food, Brown explores the foundation of cooking: heat. From searing and roasting to braising, frying, and boiling, he covers the spectrum of cooking techniques, stopping along the way to explain the science behind it all, often adding a pun and recipe or two (usually combined, as with Miller Thyme Trout).

I'm Just Here for the Food is chock-full of information, but Brown teaches the science of cooking with a soft touch, adding humor even to the book's illustrations--his channeling of the conveyer belt episode of I Love Lucy to explain heat convection is a hoot. The techniques are thoroughly explained, and Brown also frequently adds how to augment the cooking to get optimal results, including a tip on modifying a grill with a hair dryer for more heat combustion. But what about the food? Brown sticks largely to the traditional, from roast turkey to braised chicken piccata, though he does throw a curveball or two, such as Bar-B-Fu (marinated, barbecued tofu). And you'll quickly be a convert of his French method of scrambling eggs via a specially rigged double boiler--the resulting dish is soft, succulent, and lovely. But more than just a recipe book, I'm Just Here for the Food is a fascinating, delightful tour de force about the love of food and the joy of discovery. --Agen Schmitz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alton Brown + Cook Book = Great Reading
I picked this book up because I love watch Alton Brown's TV show Good Eats. His quirky way of explaining things is unparalleled and helps you to not only be interested in what he is saying but also remember it.

Reading this book is exactly like watching the TV show but now you have some recipes right there in front of you while you're in the kitchen. He has what seems like hundreds of diagrams about the science behind cooking and the theory of why he believes what he is telling you is the best way to do it.

The great thing about the book is that it shows you one way to cook a recipe but encourages you to come up with different and better ways.Instead of making you feel guilty for not conforming, this book helps you feel good about doing it.

This is a definite must read for anyone who wants to have fun cooking and wants to know the reasons behind why recipes are the way they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Primer on Cooking
This is not a cookbook in the traditional sense. If you want a cookbook that regurgitates the recipes you see on the show -- well, you're not going to get it from Alton Brown. In this book, he teaches about the methods of cooking, and then give some recipes that support the techniques described.

The bottom line is, if you want to learn about cooking, buy this book and read it, cover to cover. If you want some recipes you saw on Good Eats, go to foodnetwork.com and get them for free.In the end, buying the book will make you a much wiser person.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are tired of flopped recipes
Let's face it, even if you don't enjoy cooking as a hobby, you have to learn to cook. You can't eat out every single meal and you can't live on frozen entrees.I was sick and tired of lousy results from my best attempts at following standard recipes.Alton Brown came to my rescue. If I am going to cook, I want good results, predictable results, reliable results, something people really want to eat.AB shows you how.I don't know how anyone can get by in the kitchen without knowing what is going on with the food as it being transformed by the cooking process. You don't need a Ph.D. in chemistry you just need to let AB teach you in his entertaining way. ... Editorial Review

"I think cooking is a lot of fun and I hate to see people not having fun doing it just because they don't have the right tools--which is not to say they need the prettiest, best, most expensive tools. They just need the tools that are right for them." Such is the organizing principle of Alton Brown's Gear for Your Kitchen by the selfsame Alton Brown, star of Food Network's Good Eats as well as award-winning author of I'm Just Here for the Food. It's an interesting, effective principle. It comes from a guy who serves pie with a four-dollar mortar trowel he picked up at the hardware store.

Brown's opening challenge is a 60-day, four phase process of ridding your kitchen of all things unused and insignificant--easy on the surface, but tough in the doing. That leaves room for essential gear. And to help make those choices, Brown looks at pots and pans, sharp things (not just knives, but graters, mandolins, and cheese slicers, too), small things with plugs (as in small appliances--from food processors to coffee makers to deep fat fryers), kitchen tools unplugged (those items that fill drawers), storage and containment, and safety and sanitation.

If this were just an encyclopedia, what an unwholesome bore it would be. But Brown turns this relevant information into a romp. He's talking about the tools he uses, after all, and has no fear of naming likes and dislikes--based on his own experience. He also includes unending side chatter about cutting corners, saving money, and actually putting good tools to work. You'll find recipes throughout, and techniques, too. Like, how to bake a chicken in a flower pot. If you wonder why you would even want to attempt it in the first place, Brown clues you in. Alton Brown's Gear for Your Kitchen is about as guilt free as pleasure will ever get. --Schuyler Ingle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always fascinating
My husband bought me this book (along with the newest set of the Good Eats DVDs).Initially, I didn't think that this book would be for me even though Good Eats is one of my favorite shows. As interesting as Alton Brown is, I didn't think that a book just about kitchen tools would be interesting. Then I started reading it. AB has such a unique way of writing that I was instantly mesmerized. It makes me want to go through my kitchen and purge all the unitaskers I've accumulated over the years.I will get there, though it may take a while. As an added bonus, he includes quite a few interesting recipes (that correspond to the gear he is talking about).I will never again doubt AB.In my opinion, he's the best there is in the cooking world.

3-0 out of 5 stars From a fan Great Book, but not a good buy
This is a great book, and very informative. As he does in his first book, he explains the concepts behind cooking in an almost scientific.BUT many of the most important tidbits are found in abbreviated with his first book.He also tends not to give the full story when endorsing a particular product. The Pressure Cooker, Stand Mixer, Perfect Beaker, etc.So before you buy, look at the recommendations on this site, consumer reports, and any other nonpartisan source you can.

My suggestion is try and find this book at your library, then decide if you want to buy it.For me I took a few notes, then returned the book.I can always go check it out, and its not the type of book I'll always have out.

(oh and before any of you try this, the terra cotta smoker is great, but not nearly as cheap and convenient as the smokey joe smoker in I'm just here for the food).

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Entertaining and Ever So Useful
Don't buy this book if you're looking for recommendations on which brands of applicances to buy -- even Alton Brown would admit that you're better off checking out "Cook's Illustrated" or "Consumer Reports" for that. What this book is brilliant for is the explanations of what the most commonly used kitchen tools do and don't (and can and can't) do and how they work, along with the practical tips for picking the items that suit your needs best.Alton Brown does, from time to time, make specific recommendations, but he tells you why he likes those items so that you can accept orreject them on the merits. Also it should be noted that some of his recommendations run contrary to what he recommends for baking in "I'm Just Here for More Food," so if you bake a lot, you might want to read that book as well before shopping for items such as scales and mixers that are used in both cooking and baking."Gear For Your Kitchen" covers items used in both, but emphasizes cooking.

Alton covers each type of equipment thoroughly, explaining, for instance, what types of pans are good for different types of cooking applications, and what are the various properties of the different materials out of which they are made.So not only do you end up understanding the diffference between a sauce pan and a saucier, you can figure out whether clad metal or copper is your best bet. This same type of treatment is given for knives, small appliances, etc.

But my favorite part of the book has to do with sanitation and storage. The explanations of why certain sanitary measures need to be taken are coupled with easy ways to do it.I couldn't get a frozen enchilada smell out of my microwave oven until I mixed water and bleach in the proportions Alton recommends in a plastic spray bottle. So simple and obvious and yet...

While reading this (cover to cover in practically one sitting -- it's that readable) I found myself enjoying Alton's humorous descriptions, numerous photos and drawings. But I've found myself going back to the book as a handy reference for ingenious ways to use items I already have and ideas for shopping more intelligently.

Since buying this book I've cleared out and reorganized my kitchen and even though I bought a lot more stuff after reading this book, I have more space and am able to use it more efficiently.

Thanks Alton! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just the 'how,' but also the 'why'
This is not just a cookbook with recipes and directions, but it is also packed with the theory of cooking: why one should briase instead of roast, the finer points of grilling and smoking food, and a lot of information about specific foods as well.

I'm at the airport posting this review and looking forward to my long flight now that I have this book. Halfway through I simply cannot put it down. [...]

You won't find haute cuisine here, but your knowledge base about cooking in general, and good food in particular, will become much broader.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I'm a huge Alton Brown fan. This is one of the books I asked for when my birthday came around. I thought I wanted it after reading the reviews and thought it sounded good. I was very disappointed. While there is some good information in it, it's mostly blank pages that you write your own recipes in w/ your notes. There are a few clear plastic pages so that you can put in recipe clippings and instructions and warranties for various kitchen gadgets, but a simple file folder would solve that. Sadly, I will be returning this book and finding something else to purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars not worth the money
My girlfriend bought me this so called...book...not worth the cash. If I had seen it in the store, I would just have gone to the office supply aisleand bought a three ring binder for 99 cents and made it myself. But his other real books are good. ... Read more

Editorial Review

KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off. --Betsy Danheim

From the Manufacturer

The Artisan mixer's strong 325-watt motor delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily.

The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl with ergonomic handle is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable.

Unique Mixing Action

The beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This unique mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl.

Multiple Speeds

10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job; from very high to very slow stir. It's easy to select the precise speed needed for a perfect mix.

Versatile Accessories

The flat beater, dough hook, and the professional wire whip add to the versatility of the mixer. The flat beater is the ideal accessory for mixing normal to heavy batters. From cake mixes to firm cookie dough, the flat beater mixes quickly and thoroughly.

The dough hook mixes and kneads yeast dough, saving both time and the effort of hand-kneading. The wire whip incorporates the maximum amount of air in whipped mixtures for fluffier whipped cream and angel food cakes.

All attachments are solidly constructed, and attach easily to the stand mixer.

Easy Clean Up

The pouring shield fits around the top of the bowl and prevents ingredient splash-out. The chute makes it convenient and easy to add ingredients.

The tilt-back mixer head allows for easy access to bowl and beaters. A lock lever holds the mixer head securely in place and the bowl fastens tightly to the base.

Optional Attachments

Optional attachments (sold separately) complete the package to make cooking a pleasure. From citrus juicer to sausage stuffer, KitchenAid stand mixers can handle just about any job in the kitchen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great essential for the baker in your life....you!
I love the mixer's power, capacity and ease of use. It makes even garlic mashed potatoes heavenly. I selected a black model to match my Viking kitchens without realizing the color would need more frequent cleaning. If you use this mixer every day buy a cover or another color to save time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I got this mixer about a month ago. I've wanted one for years, but always talked myself out of it (too expensive, too big, etc.) After finding a great deal here on Amazon, I finally caved in and let me say, I'm glad I did. I love this mixer! I was worried I wouldn't use it very much, since I already have a very nice bread machine (a "Zo"). I find that I'm using it all the time though. It really is like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. Cookie dough is so much easier. I'm also making bread with it constantly. It's just so simple to throw the ingredients in the mixer and let it do all the kneading. I've been making fresh bread and bagels every week and it's been no hassle. It handles the dough very well and stays put. It's a big heavy machine. The only problem I was having with it was I was finding it very difficult to remove the bowl to clean it after I was done mixing something. My husband suggested rubbing some vaseline on the bottom edge and that has solved the problem completely. Now I can pop the bowl off with one hand. Anyway, if you've been wanting one of these and if you like to bake at all, do youself a favor and get one. You will be amazed at how much easier it will make your life. I only wish I'd gotten one years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ivan must like Belgian Waffles too...
Well....my wife of 14 years finally found out about my girlfriend of 13 years and my 7 children with said girlfriend.
She didn't take the news very well, cried, yelled at me, smacked me, then packed up all of her stuff.
She informed me that she had found out about the affair and now had met someone else herself, a Russian Dancer named Ivan Karkov. He came over, punched me in the face, and then helped her move all of her things into a van. And off they went.

As sad as I was to see my wife leave, I was even more sad to see our KitchenAid Mixer leaving. It was the secret to perfect Belgian Waffles that my wife would make for me when I actually spent the night there and wasn't "Busy working at Uncle Joey's Mashed Potato Bar".

I didn't know where I would get a mixer like this, I only shop at Old Navy, Home Depot, and Sam Goody. None of those places had them . (I looked.)
I didn't think I would ever be able to replace my Mixer as easy as I replaced my wife one year into our marriage! So, I asked my girlfriend and mother of my 7 children if she knew where to get a Kitchenaid Mixer. She said she buys all her kitchen needs on Amazon. OF COURSE! I didn't even think of it, maybe it's because all I can think of is some sweaty russian dancer touching my first love.....but, I did go buy one.
I finally got a new one and my Belgian Waffle breakfasts are back! Hooray!

Guess I didn't need my wife after all.... ... Read more

Polder's cooking thermometer with timer and clock rids cooking of internal temperature guesswork. Insert the 7-inch probe and set the alarm temperature--in Celsius or Fahrenheit. The large LCD readout on the magnetized display presents the internal temperature continuously during cooking. The loud five-minute alarm gives you plenty of time to respond. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mine lasted six years with lots of abuse
My Polder died and I came to Amazon looking for quick replacement.I was amazed to read reviews that stated that their probes died after just a few uses. I've used my Polder thousands of times over at least six years including in a gas grill, a smoker for hours at a time and every holiday turkey/roast/ham. It has been accicently flung across the kitchen, and dropped on a tile floor, more times than I want to admit. It was subjected to high enough heat to partly melt the plastic near the plug and it kept on ticking. The temp beeper burned out a few months ago and then it died completly. Given the amount of use and abuse I've been happy. I picked up a cheapo knockoff to use in tandem in a dual temp smoker and that died in a few months, so I figured the Polder was good and that was bad. Has the quality of Polder gone south over the years? Was I just lucky or other unlucky? What do you think?

4-0 out of 5 stars never had a problem
I'm not sure exactly what went wrong for the other folks here but I've never had a problem. My kids even use it as a toy.In fact, it took one of them dumping it into the dog's water dish to finally kill it.But I am going to buy the same one to replace it.

5-0 out of 5 stars have purchased 8 of them over the past 4 years !love it
We've had two,I killed one when I dropped it in a sink of water. We've purchased six for relatives and everyone loves them. Would buy another tomorrow if it dies.Think I'll get the proble for 5.99 on the site for a backup.we use it in the oven, for frying, in the smoker, on the grill. It is just great and I've used the timer a few thousand times I'm sure.My favorite kitchen gadget.(and it has to be the polder) ... Equipped with 14 pre-programmed settings, this digital Maverick thermometer helps you achieve ideal results for both candy confections and fried treats. Plus, the simple operation means that you no longer have to stand by the stove and make estimates. In addition to helping get candy textures just right, the thermometer ensures that fried food cooks for the minimum time, so results are more crispy and less fatty.

Simple icons guide pre-set use, while a handy temperature guide on the back helps out with measurements. Readings can be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, and when the ideal temperature is reached, the monitor beeps and flashes. The unit comes with a sturdy clip for the side of the pot and wipes up clean with a damp cloth. Maverick also includes automatic shut-off and a low-battery indicator. 2-0 out of 5 stars very annoyed!
I bought this thermomter after watching Goods Eats with Alton Brown, because when I make buttercream frosting I wanted to be able to clip on the thermometer to the pot and get an accurate reading. Well this themometer did a lousy job at staying clipped onto the pot, it kept falling off no matter how I put it on. I even tried using other pots, but no luck. I am so mad that I paid so much money for this crappy gadget, it sucks!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great ... as long as it worked
I used this thermometer fewer than 10 times before it stopped working. For the most part, it no longer registers any temperature, and when it does it reads 75-100 degrees too cool. While it was working, I definitely preferred it to my analog candy thermometer because it was less bulky, but I certainly can't recommend it now.

The clip still works, though, and coupled with my wonderful Polder probe thermometer, I've got the best candy thermometer ever.

1-0 out of 5 stars Well made unit that suffers from a fatal design flaw
This seems to be a well made product, and if not for one tremendous flaw I could somewhat recommend it.

The manufacturer got a the hardware design and functionally right. The temperature readings are very accurate. The view-screen tilts for easy reading, even on pots with sloping sides. And having the 14 most common candy and oil temperatures stored in the unit for easy selection is a nice addition, unfortunately it's also the Maverick's Achilles heel.

Because if you ever want to cook something at a temperature 'other' than those 14 presets, you may as well use a cheap analog thermometer.Unlike any other digital thermometer I've ever used, the Maverick does not permit setting of custom temperature alarms. You'll either use their 14 alarm presets or nothing at all.

Certainly the unit will display whatever temperature it is currently reading, but so can any $3 analog candy thermometer. In my mind, the primary purpose of a digital thermometer is to alert a cook when a specific temperature is reached. Not allowing the cook to set alarms at their chosen temperatures is a ridiculous and fatal defect.

The unit does have some issues even aside from that major flaw. The 14 available temperatures are selected from an LCD display, unfortunately the text on the display is verytiny it's awfully difficult to read.I have good eyesight, those suffering even moderate nearsightedness will be unable to read this display unassisted. This tiny-text problem seems also to a consequence of those 14 presets. If this thermometer worked like most other digital thermometers, the display would be more than big enough show 3 digit temperatures in huge lettering. But those 14 presets have too much text to be displayed at anything other than a tiny size on the unit's screen.

This product also misses the mark in catering to the needs of cooks. In candy making, knowing when candy has dropped to a certain temperature is just as important as knowing the highest temperature reached. This unit has no function for setting alarms at cooling temperatures.

This product shares it's reason for failure with many other failed electronic products. It has good hardware but very poorly designed software (firmware). The fixes should be simple by software standards. The designers need to ditch 14 presets, allow setting of alarms for any user-defined high and low temperature, and increase the text size. Those few changes would turn this lemon into an amazing kitchen tool. But if it remains as it is, it will be just another piece of kitchen junk to clutter your drawer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars IF TURKEYS SAID AAAHHHH!
This is a handy litle test thermometer that is easy to read, and folds into a piece about 5" long for easy storage in a kitchen drawer.

Some thermometers are difficult to decipher - this is not with temps calibrated by 25 degree increments, and numbers that you don't need a magnifying glass to read.

Also, our old thermometer had a tendency to "steam" so that it was difficult to read..

The proper reading on this thermometer is available almost instantly - another plus. ... Read more

Pancakes, eggs, and bacon somehow taste extra hearty whencooked in a heavy cast-iron skillet. 5-0 out of 5 stars The One to Own
Hands down, the best skillet I've ever used and owned. I used to fire up the grill all the time, but the Lodge 12" cast iron skillet has made me WANT TO cook my steaks on my stovetop these days. It's heavy, but heat conduction is superb. Just be super careful not to touch cast-iron handles when the skillet's hot, you may "brand" yourself... ouch! You can "season" the cast iron skillet yourself, but I bought the pre-seasoned one to save me the initial trouble. Follow care instructions and you'll have a skillet for life. The more you use it, the better it gets. Those modern non-stick pans (Teflon or what-not) can't touch it. There's nothing to dislike with this fantastic, down-to-earth, USA-made skillet that will grace your family's kitchens for generations to come. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price, terrific results
I reiterate the praises that other reviewers have given to this skillet. It is so well-priced for what you get--a highly reliable performer that is indestructible and that will outlast all of us. This skillet goes from the stovetop into the oven or broiler--or into a crackling fire--with no problem. The more I learn about and experiment with cooking, the more I appreciate that versatility. (Just be sure to invest in a silicon or other good quality, high-heat oven mitt or pad to protect your hands when using it in an oven or campfire.)

As much as I love All-Clad products, I've switched primarily to cooking with cast iron, and when I think about all of those Teflon-coated pans I've gone through in the last 30 years that must be filling up landfills somewhere, I wish I had never even heard of Teflon. If you can manage the weight of the cast iron, which most people should be able to do, there is nothing better and longer lasting.

Whether you get the preseasoned version of this skillet or not, the ritual of seasoning the iron with vegetable oil and coarse (kosher) salt is one that I always enjoy, and it requires very little time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kitchen Pan I own!
I was always skeptical about Cast Iron pans, because they just sounded like so much work to keep up with - seasoning, don't do this, do that -- For years I just stuck to my regular pans thinking I wasn't missing anything. Boy was I wrong!

The pre-seasoning part was also a big skeptical point with me, but true to words, it is. I love this pan. It's heavy, but thanks to the helper handle I never feel like I'll drop it. Cleanup is so much easier than I thought, and it really keeps it's tempature, even on a flat electric stove.

I have yet to make something in this pan that didn't come out great. From pan searing steak to frying chicken, I've had nothing but a consistantly good experience. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This multipurpose tool created a stir in the kitchen when it came out, as the food processor did a generation earlier. In order to blend, whip, and chop smaller amounts of ingredients, it's no longer necessary to wrestle with bulky appliances. Immerse the 7-1/2-inch blender shaft, with its little blade on the end, into a pot where vegetables have been simmering, press the switch, and in seconds a creamy soup appears--with no need to dump everything into a big blender. Blend sauces and baby foods in their cooking pots, too. Blend a milk shake or juice drink right in its drinking container, or in the 2-1/2-cup beaker included in this set. Whipping cream and egg whites is just as convenient: a 5-inch whisk attaches to the motor when the blender is removed. For chopping nuts, herbs, garlic, or onions, there's a 2-cup chopper bowl with a special blade. The motor with the attached blender shaft can be mounted on a wall (mount included). Everything but the motor and the chopper-bowl top (both should be wiped with a damp cloth) can go into the dishwasher. This tool is more than handy, it's a revolution. The instruction sheet, unfortunately, is harder to comprehend than the tool is to use. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm ready to get a third!
I live for my Braun handblenders.I use it most often to make refried beans and also for all kinds of soups.I keep kosher so I have one for dairy and one for meat and I'm planning to get one for passover. This is a must have for every person who hates to clean up the food processor or the blender. It cuts prep time to a bare minimum..

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite kitchen tool
This is the best kitchen tool anyone could own.It is small, and therefore easy to store. It is also easy to clean.

I have used mine to puree soups, applesauce, make smoothies, beat eggs, make pesto and baby food. With the attachments, I have ground coffee beans, whole spices, ground nuts, cake mixes and more!

Very versatile, very affordable, easy-to-clean, easy-to-store...what more could you ask for?

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy... but not so easy on the hands
The Braun Multiquick 430 HC consists of a motor housing with cord that twist-locks into a blending attachment. It can also lock into a whisk attachment, or the top portion of a mini-chopper. It includes a two-cup plastic measuring cup as well, sized and shaped so that you can use the blender to blend small amounts of liquids in it.

While you need to wipe off the motor housing by hand, the lock-on attachments are dishwasher-safe. (Our last immersion blender was one-piece and not dishwasher-safe, so this is a real bonus!) Because of the way the blender attachment is shaped, with the plastic housing circling the blade, you don't have to worry that the blade will get banged around and dulled on the dishwasher rack.

With enough use the blades will eventually dull, of course, and we use ours quite a bit. But until then they work wonders, easily pureeing soups of all kinds. The chopper attachment is surprisingly effective, and I've used it to chop small amounts of herbs into confetti in split seconds. It's also very easy to assemble, use, de-assemble, and wash in the dishwasher--easier than a mini-prep food processor.

The whisk is a handy attachment, and the multiquick does have enough power to produce whipped cream, although it takes more time than it does with a full-power two-beater hand mixer. However, there isn't a lot of feedback from the whisk--it has just enough give that it's hard to tell when it's pushing up against a bowl, so I'm always a little worried that I'm going to damage it inadvertently.

The one real problem this item has for me is the on-button. It isn't very sensitive; it requires a firm push, it's easy to accidentally let up on it, and it takes some amount of force to keep it pushed in. I have tendonitis, so this can be pretty hard on my hands if I'm not mixing or chopping a very small amount of materials. It would be nice if it had either a real "on" switch, or a more sensitive button. ... Read more

The Cuisinart Mini-Prep food processor stands 8 inches tall and just over 4 inches wide, but don't let the size fool you. The base houses a motor so powerful that you need to stabilize it with one hand when using the high setting to whip up a strawberry-banana smoothie for one in less than a minute. The clear plastic prep bowl locks into place with a simple twist, while the blades can be set sharp side up for chopping onions or grating Parmesan cheese, or turned blunt side up for making walnut pesto or whipping up chocolate frosting. The set includes a spatula and a cleaning brush to remove coffee grounds.

For best results, cut ingredients into small, even pieces--about 1/2-inch square or so works well. In general, use the sharp-edge approach for low speed and the blunt side of the blades for high speed. If you need to run the motor for longer than one minute, pause and begin again. The bowl, cover, and blade assembly can all be run through the dishwasher, but watch your fingers when dissembling the machine, as the blades are extremely sharp. --Irene Svete ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Machine
I've had this machine for about 10 years now after my husband INSISTED that I stop chopping onions by hand during the construction of Thanksgiving dinner. He brought this home and well, I've been loving it ever since.I do mostly use it for onions, but it is wonderful for spices and nuts too.I just can't believe how powerful the motor is in this guy - it seems as if it could grind beef!Mine has turned yellow (it was white) with use but I think I'm going to rebuy it in stainless steel.Anyway, the price here on Amazon is quite good since my husband paid $34 for it 10 years ago!I think I'm going to ahve to buy a larger one because this one is getting too small for our family. I don't like the way it cleans up, however, it can be a little much when you do onions. You HAVE to put it in the dishwasher for sure if you do onions because the plastic definitely holds the odor. Wish it was glass! Great machine for the money and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
I've owned my mini cuisinart for almost 10 years now. I've never had a problem with it. It chops anything you put in it. Clean up is easy and it doesn't take up much space. 10 years and it still looks and works like it is brand new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mini-Prep Processor is a wonderful machine
When my daughter sent me a stainless cuisinart mini-prep processor, I was wondering what I'd do with it. But once I used it, I was sold. It's a wonderful little machine that looks great at the same time. I love it for chopping eggs for egg salad and I used it for chopping onions and celery for the turkey dressing. It does a great job for carrots and nuts, too.
I'm an experienced mother who has raised 8 kids and I love to cook. I like this processor so much, I am giving one to my daughter for her birthday. I think the rest of my adult kids will be getting one for their birthdays too.
This is a time-saver for today's busy career moms and dads. You won't be disappointed.

Its high handle permits this electric knife's twin 9-inchserrated stainless-steel blades to slice a roast, a loaf of crustybread, a block of cheese, or a pineapple straight down all the way tothe cutting board. With 100 watts of power, the knife requires no skillto effortlessly carve uniform slices. 5-0 out of 5 stars A very good medium priced electric knife
I bought this knife to avoid tragic turkey incidents. You see, I used to try to carve my Thanksgiving Turkey by hand with poor results (as in, "Gee Tom would you rather have a 1 inch slab of Turkey or a wafer thin piece?")I bought the knife as it was in the perfect middle area between the cheapie knives and the $50 models.

After cutting my first turkey with this knife, I wished I had bought one years ago. This knife is just great--the rubber handle lets youkeep the knife firmly in hand even when you get turkey grease on your hand. Also, there is a handle over the trigger so you cannot turn the knife on when changing the blade. And the bottom line is that this cuts like a dream.I've used it on everything from turkey to roasts with great results--it allows me to easily cut nice uniform slices. No more tragic turkey incidents!!!!

The only reason I am here today writing a review is because I wanted to order another knife as a Christmas gift and saw that this knife received a poor review which I just don't understand. My knife is probably about 4 years old and I still love it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This knife stinks.FIND ANYTHING ELSE
Absolutely the worst knife I have ever used.By FAR.Ergo, as in ergonomic???NOT.Can't even hold the on-switch on for a full minute, it keeps turning off. What a HUGE PAIN.AVOID.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally A Knife That Slices Allthe Way to the Board
I have always wanted an electric knife that didn't leave a small wedge that wasn't sliced through. Now I have one.It doesawonderful job on meats and breads. On cheese it does a satisfactory job, although Iprefer a plain, old serated knife. The safety lock which prevents the blade from moving while inserting or removing it is also a worthwhile feature. ... This is a single measuring cup that will replace the others floating around your kitchen--even the teaspoons! Cone-shaped, with a sturdy base and tight-fitting lid, this little beaker is perfect for those recipes with odd amounts, such as "two cups plus one tablespoon." There's a lip around the top edge that acts beautifully as a spout--no dripping when pouring liquids, from water to beaten egg yolks. Measurements include pints, cups, ounces, ml/ccm, tablespoons, and teaspoons, and all are written clearly in black print. The lid fits snugly enough that you can snap it on and shake the beaker for easy mixing of ingredients. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Best for Liquids
As a former chemist, among other things, I really appreciate this measuring cup as the very best improvement over the old pyrex glass cups. The shape is ideal for doing fine measurements down to around three or four tablespoons; however, I suggest you stop there, especially for oils, as you are likely to leave five to 10 percent of the measured liquid behind.

If I were to make any suggestions at all on the design of this 'beaker', it would be to release it in a glass version. I know this would be much more breakable, but I think it would also be much more sanitary, as I would feel much more confident that it would not get scratched and that it would stand up to a high heat wash.

For those who use it so much that you are tempted to use it for solids, I say don't. There are really good reasons to do solids with the stainless steel spoons and cups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best measuring device I ever used
The cone shape really helps to get an accurate measurement for small quantities. I use it almost every day, and the lid is really helpfull; it fits tightly and has even prevented a spill when I knocked it over once. There is only one problem. I like it so well I am going to have to buy a couple more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but easily broken.
I've gone through 2 of these. Each time, a crack develops - straight down one side and up the other. I have not been rough with them. In fact, the last one broke when I was washing it with a soft cloth. Functionally, it's a great idea - smaller quantities are measured with greater accuracy. But, I'm not buying more until it is made from sturdier material. ... Read more

Microplane Grater/Zester

Kitchen
list price: $11.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High shipping charges
The zester is fine but a $10.24 shipping charge on a $15.99 item is ridiculous. The only reason I bought this item was that I had a gift certificate that had to be used.Such shipping charges are outrageous!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What did I do with out this grater
I use this for everything. If a recipe calls for minced garlic or ginger, I grate it.I have even sprayed it with pam and shaved crayons with it for a school project.I will never be without this again EVER

5-0 out of 5 stars No kitchen should be without one
I love, love, love this little gem of a tool. I have had mine for over 5 years and have had no problem with it getting dull even though I use it almost daily. (Perhaps this is because, like any good cutting implement, I never wash it in the dishwasher.)

In addition to using it for hard cheeses, and zesting lemons and limes one of our favorite uses for the microplane is grating nutmeg. It does a top notch job with nutmeg! I consider the Microplane one of my three favorite kitchen gadgets and have made it my mission to make sure other members of my family and close friends have one in their kitchens.

Recently, I found that you can purchase an accessory item, a housing that holds the item being grated that you can slide up and down the blade. I think this would be useful for those who are nervous around sharp objects. I personally find these devices cumbersome and would rather wear one of those kevlar gloves for protection while grating if I were concerned about injury.

Let's face it, in general, grating on any grater is a perilous procedure. I can't count the number of times I have grated myself while using a standard box grater or other handheld grater. Having said this, it is my opinion that the Microplane is as safe to use as any other grater, definitely not inherently more hazardous and in my experience less hazardous.

To sum up, any aspiring gourmet and anyone who appreciates a quality tool that can make tedious chores easier should get the Microplane. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have had one longer than....
I bought one the year before my youngest son was born - he is 18.5 years - it is still working like a charm. I have purchased want-to-be's in the past for family couldn't find the V-Slicer at the time. Now I am buying 5 for those I did wrong in the past - with the fakes - lol.I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite kitchen Gadget!!!
I bought one of these slicers about 10 years ago from an infomercial, and I absolutely LOVE it!I have used it on a daily basis. My most favorite use is to make quick work out of dicing large onions, getting the job done so fast that there are never any tears! It takes the tedium out of slicing, dicing, and chopping so that you can get on with the cooking! With the V-Slicer, you can turn out professional cuts every time!I highly recommend this product. As one reviewer said, the blades are very sharp and therefore last for years.Care and caution must be used when working with this item.In all the years I have used mine, I never had a mishap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another quick sell gimmick....
When I first saw the V-Slicer, it was at the State Fair.As with most quick sell get rich items at the fair, I was very skeptical that this kitchen 'tool' would truly deliver results time and time again.

I've now owned the V-slicer (plus additional inserts) for 2+years and it's as amazing as the day I saw it at the fair. It's still razor sharp and very easy to clean (just wash with water).

The V-slicer is great for slicing anything and almost everything. It does wonders on tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, celery, onions, apples, and much more.I particularly like to slice up some nice thin hash browns and season them up for breakfast on Sunday mornings.

On top of it all, the price of the V-slicer cannot be beat.I've scene similar products selling for $50 - $100+ and I can help but think those are ridiculously over priced.Sure they're made of steel, but this V-slicer is a solid very sturdy plastic that maintains stability while slicing and allows for very simple clean up.

One word of caution, the blades are SHARP!Again, after 2 years, they're still extremely razor sharp.

The V-slicer has proved to be one of the most useful and least expensive tools we use in our home kitchen. For the price and usefulness, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

Nothing matches homemade pizza for casual entertaining, and Sassafras packages everything you need to get started in this gourmet pizza kit. Assemble your pizza on the natural wooden board, then slide it in the oven onto the preheated baking brick. Made of Superstone, this 15-inch pottery round absorbs moisture and distributes heat evenly so your crust turns out crisp and evenly browned. A rack made of stainless steel transforms the stone from a baking brick to a stay-hot serving platter, and a wheel-style pizza cutter with a wooden handle completes the set. Cleanup is easy: simply scrub with warm water (soap is not recommended for either the stone or the board). Besides pizza, the Superstone has numerous other baking uses. 1-0 out of 5 stars Should have paid attention to the reviews...
Yep, mine cracked too, on the 3rd use. I followed all instructions to the letter, and as it was heating up I heard a loud crack from the oven. It had split almost down the middle. Amazon should really consider dropping this product as an insult to their quality standards. Save your money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Good While it Lasts
The pizza stone does an excellent job with breads, pizza, rolls, casseroles...Basically anything you want to cook the stone will help cook evenly, and quickly. It's easy to clean, easy to remove from the oven especially with the metal rack/handles that it is set in to.The reason why I gave it one star, even though it does a superb job cooking is because it will crack.I read the reviews when I was buying it, and I doubted that I would have as bad of luck as everyone else.I was wrong. The stone lasted me about 6 months and then just as everyone predicted, it cracked right down the middle.
If you're looking for a quality stone that will cook well and you only need to use it a couple times, this is your stone. But if you want something more long term, look elsewhere because sassafras doesn't make it to last.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, horrible product
I wish my stone lasted as long as others.I had borrowed a friend's Pampered Chef pizza stone and was so impressed with the "stone cooked" pizza that I wanted one of my own.It came out beautifully.I bought this set getting excited to make more pizza...it cracked the first time getting it out of the oven.I was distraught (but I got over it).I followed the directions to the letter and inflicted no thermal shock and I did not clean it with water while warm...etc...It is too thin and feels like it is made out of cheaper clay. The cutter is cheap too.The peel is okay, but get one separately.I CANNOT recommend this product AT ALL.Do yourself a favor and track down a Pampered Chef stone. It's cheaper and MUCH better quality. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars So far, so good
I bought this because it looked easy to clean and the heating elements would not be exposed to our hard water. So far, so good.

The description on this site says it's perfect for heating soups, hot chocolate, etc., but the instruction booklet specifically states to heat nothing in it except water.I suppose a watery broth would be okay, but nothing with low water content.

It is rather noisy when heating water, but it looks good, goes easily on and off the base, is easy to clean, and it heats fast.It it doesn't malfunction, then I'll be satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars FAST (and great boiled eggs too!)
We've been using this now for a little over two months.Works as advertised: boils water faster than microwave or stove.Perfect for making French press coffee. With the wide opening lid also perfect for boiling eggs:Put the eggs in, add water, turn it on, five minutes after it turns off, take the eggs out and let cool at room temperature, and you have perfectly cooked (almost hard) boiled eggs. One of those things that once you have it, you kind of wonder how you did without it.

This honing steel serves a vital role in the kitchen by realigning, or "resetting," a knife's edge, which bends this way and that when contacting a cutting surface. (Often called a sharpening steel, or"butcher" steel, a steel doesn't actually sharpen a knife--unless it's a "diamond" steel.) Consisting of a rodof hard steel-alloy and a tough synthetic handle, this steel works well. A loop facilitates hanging it close athand so you can employ the steel often—ideally each time you use a knife. That prevents a blade frombecoming dull and prolongs intervals between professional sharpenings. The rule is that a steel should be atleast as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, and this steel's 10-inch rod is sufficient for nearly allhousehold knives. The steel carries a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for it's size...and size does matter.
I cook for a livin' and I have many honing steels, some at 14" for my big knives and this one for my 8" and under knives. I got this one in an upscale set of 4 starz and I do love it. As previously reviewed, it's not for sharpening but used to maintain a sharp edge. If you use this PROPERLY every time you use a new knife then the factory edge will last for months if not years under normal usage.
If you are collecting the 4 star line then this is a must, it is one of the most attractive steels made, the Rockwell rating is harder than any factory production blade made, the grooving is crisp and it is a bargain compared to other brands. A must replacement for a lesser steel in most 4 star sets.
It would be worth your time and money to buy the knife care video and learn how to use this well...an investment for your future enjoyment of Henckels 4 star knives.

We hand out 5 mojo*z for this steel Magnolia!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars It's Just a Honing Steel
Make sure to read what Amazon's editorial reviewer says. Most people think that "sharpening" steels sharpen. They don't.They hone or straighten the edge. For a dull blade, you need a good diamond-impregnated steel. After I got one of the latter, I hardly ever use the Henckels steel.Henckels knives have a pretty hard edge which, in my experience, tends to dull more than bending. The Henckels honing steel will sharpen the knife, but only slightly, and the ridges in the steel will quickly wear out if you use it for this purpose. ... Editorial Review

Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and theside-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents.Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can opener Goodbyes, and hello's!
This useful kitchen gadget cleverly cuts the side seam of a can so easily and cleanly; I didn't know it had actually worked at all, till I picked off the top with the small "pliers" attached on the side of the opener!

The top fits easily back on again, if needed. There still is a tinybit of metallic chips and whatever's stuck on the side of the seam, that can possibly fall into the food within the can or while pouring from the can...certainly no better or worse than with old fashioned openers.

Since I orignally write this review, (andgave the old can openers to Goodwill)I found a minor problem..It doesn't open "rectangular" cans, say tins of sardines or clams etc. It will open curved surfaces all day, and open the curved cornes of a "rectangular" can, however when it gets to the "straightaway" sides the rectangle, the handle then hits the can, the opener is stopped cold, and can't go any further. So don't throw away the old style can opener if youumay use the rectangular cans.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price
Thought for twenty bucks you'd get something really great, dissapointed. It opens cans OK, but no better than the old fashioned openers. I liked the idea of not having the dirty can top in the food. The smooth edge is nice, but it uncovers some new crud that is withing the top can seem. You now have to be carefull this scum doesn't fall in the food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trash the others
I've already thrown away my electric can opener. This thing is amazing!Smooth, easy and hygienic. No blade touches the contents, and you can use the can top to reseal the can if you need to! ... Read more
