    Editorial Review

Wine should breathe a little, but not overnight. Putting an end to the oxidation process, which turns a favorite Merlot into vinegar, is easy with the Vacu Vin Wine Saver. Made from high-quality rubber, which will not affect the taste of the wine, the Wine Saver uses a vacuum-style pump to release air to keep a wine fresh. And it's easy to use--just place a stopper in a bottle's neck, place the pump over the stopper, and pump air out until some resistance is felt. This process is suitable for preserving all but sparkling wines, and will save Chiantis, Syrahs, and others for up to two weeks. --Madeleine Miller ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great concept - but low quality - will jam permanently
I wish another company would make the same product with better quality. Although the concept is spot on, there's a problem with the rubber o-ring inside the pump - it will slide out of place and jam up the pump so that it becomes unusable. My first one lasted about 9 months before that happened, so I was willing to try again. The second one, however, lasted less than a month before the o-ring slipped and the pump jammed. There is no way to open it up to fix it. So until they fix this problem, this product is hit or miss. Caveat emptor!

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
We use our vacu vin wine saver all of the time since purchasing it about six months ago.It enables us to put partially full bottles back into our wine cooler, which we were unable to do before. We had tried unsuccessfully to do this with other wine corks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extend that bottle's life!
I recently bought this, and am happy with it. It "clicks" after 4 or 5 quick pumps for a 3/4 full bottle, and 7-8 clicks for a 1/4 filled bottle, to indicate vacuuum has been established, and the vacuum holds well, as does the wine!

Theprevious model did not click, however it certainly attained vacuum after about the same number of pumps..hearing the clicks is more reassuring!

As I recently bought it, I can't assess its long term durability as others have.

It does extend the wine's good taste for at least a few days in addition to the usual 2-3 days before the wine tastes "funny".

I've no reason to try it for more than a week of"corking up" a previously opened tasty bottle, so for these reasons i've got my money's worth, and it gets 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Rice
Perfect white rice every time.As a filipino I'm required by law to have a rice cooker. We've gone through two lesser quality cookers. This is by far the most reliable on the market. We haven't tried making brown rice or wild rice with this just good old white sticky stuff. It does what is supposed to...make great rice every time.Futhermore, the rice is kept warm for hours without burning the bottom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great rice
I like this product a lot.It makes our rice come out sticky like it should and keeps the rice warm and ready like it should. My only complaints are:
    1. The rice burns if I remove some of the rice and save the rest for later.
    2. This might be due to the fact that the rice cooker was sent in its original package without any cushioning. My first rice cooker was dented beyond belief and I returned it.My second rice cooker has a very minor dent in it when it was shipped two-day.I would strongly recommend that you look very carefully at your rice cooker when it arrives to make sure that it is not damaged.

But beyond that, I love my rice cooker. If you are looking for something that will feed a crowd and is very simple to use, this will fill the bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice rice
As I make lots of rice, I have used many cookers. There is one of these at my office. It is a very nice cooker. It does not seem to make the steam mess others I have tried do, and when you liftopen the top to check or stir the the rice the condensation goes into a little compartment on the side. This is nice, just remember to empty the compartment so as not to have the waste sitting around. The pot cleans up nicely to.I only wish it had a ringer or buzzer on it to tell you when it to let you know it was finished. ... Microplane Grater/Zester
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $11.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the Casual Cook
I never thought I'd ever use something like this. It just seemed, well, too fussy! However after watching Rachael Ray use one over and over on her show, I thought I'd give it a try. The price was definitely right!I must say, I don't know how I ever got along without it.It's perfect for grating chocolate and hard cheeses, and absolutely essential for zesting lemons and limes (what a difference fresh zest makes in a recipe!) without getting ANY of the bitter pith.I'm getting one for my mom and my best friend...I just love this kitchen tool!Don't think you have to be a gourmet to have use for this. Even the casual cook will find it indispensable!

5-0 out of 5 stars High shipping charges
The zester is fine but a $10.24 shipping charge on a $15.99 item is ridiculous. The only reason I bought this item was that I had a gift certificate that had to be used.Such shipping charges are outrageous!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What did I do with out this grater
I use this for everything. If a recipe calls for minced garlic or ginger, I grate it.I have even sprayed it with pam and shaved crayons with it for a school project.I will never be without this again EVER ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Brita Ultra Max water filter keeps great-tasting water flowing for all drinking and cooking needs. It eliminates the hassle of refilling the pitcher-style water filters and the expense of bottled water. The aquarium-like unit fits on the countertop, or on a shelf in the fridge so you'll have drinking water that is always cold. Its see-through base has a snap-on lid and cap for refilling, and the carbon filter reduces metals, chlorine, off tastes, and unpleasant odors. The filter lasts for up to two months of steady use. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cleaner water and big savings...
Before I purchased this water filter, I was purchasing those 12oz bottles of Poland Spring at the market. While $8 for a pack of 24 wasn't a lot of money by itself, it can really add up in the long run.Not to mention all the wasted 1/2 drunk bottles laying around the house.

By my calculations, one of these Brita filters is the equivalent of 426 12oz bottles of water. In other words, one Brita filter creates as much filtered water as $142 worth of bottled water. Now that doesn't sound too bad does it?

Of course all the savings would be pointless if the filtered water was not drinkable. And that's the best part, the water tastes very clean. No chlorine aftertaste - at least none that I can detect.I'm sure that if I were to bottle this water up and serve it as Poland Spring, no one would be any the wiser.

One important thing to note about this item, after I received my first one from Amazon, there was a slow leak coming from the spigot.Brita customer service really shined out in this case. They immediately dropped a new spigot in the mail and I received it in 3 days.Unfortunately, the spigot wasn't the cause of the problem so I made another call to the CSR's of Brita. They immediately mailed out a new plastic container which eventually solved the problem.

Do the right thing.Stop killing the environment with buckets of plastic bottles and get a water filtration system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tasting water at last!
I bought this after getting tired of nasty tasting city water. To fill it, I use a big plastic pitcher, and it sits on the counter near the coffee pot as I don't require cold water for drinking. The taste is so much better! The filters are not all that expensive; I bought a box of three when I purchased the thing and they lasted me almost a year. I am in a one-person household. I feel this system is much easier to use than the pitcher or the on-the-faucet systems which have been known to pop off in use, and much less expensive and easy to use than the in-line systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for high volume usage
I had a Brita space-saver pitcher.I was refilling it twice a day.I bought the two gallon dispenser. One of the best choices I made.I use copious amounts of water in cooking and drinking.I have to refill this every 2 days or so (but that's because I'm the only person who uses it). It's worth the investment. ... We've all experienced the annoyance of room-temperature liquids when you want them icy cold. This little sleeve cools bottles of wine or juice in about five minutes. The sleeve stores in the freezer, like most reusable ice packs--just pull it out, slip it over the bottle, and spend those five minutes admiring Guy Buffet's painting of overworked sommeliers that decorates the exterior of the sleeve. 5-0 out of 5 stars becomes indispensable after use
A kind friend gave us these...for some very special occassion, I do not recall.I was less than enthusiastic about them when I received them. However, we find ourselves using them every time we open a bottle of white wine. It's very convenient for getting your wine chilled quickly or keeping it chilled after opening, we use it mostly for keeping an open bottle cool.Having two in the freezer at all time is very convenient for comparing two different bottles of wine.Very light weight and compact to keep in the freezer.I also use them as ice packs for my kids when they have a boo boo. They can be cleaned with a clorox wipe.I highly recommend them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great with white wine
This works great for white wine. Red wine should definitely not be chilled. Guy's are is certainly chilling. Speaking of art have you seen Guy's web site at www.guybuffet.com ? Anyhow, back to chilling some vodka...

5-0 out of 5 stars Really works!I love it!
I keep two of these in my freezer at all times! When I'm ready to chill down a bottle of wine for dinner, I slip the frozen sleeve around the bottle, pop it all into the freezer for 10 minutes, and presto!Perfectly chilled wine in no time. The Wine Chiller also works great to keep an open bottle chilled while sitting on the table. These also make great gifts for wine lovers!I also highly recommend the Vacu Vin Concerto wine saver system. ... Calphalon Nylon Large Spatula
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Unlike standard plastic spatulas, this sturdy black nylon spatula from Calphalon won't melt if you leave it leaning against a hot skillet (up to 400 degrees, that is). And so it doesn't slide into your stir-fried broccoli and tofu, there's a little notch on the back of the handle that will anchor the spatula to your pan. The rounded spatula head is the perfect size for flipping grilled ham and cheese sandwiches or for lifting spinach and tomato frittatas from a skillet. The straight edge is slightly angled so you can smoothly slide the spatula under your food. With a hole in the handle, the spatula comes ready to be hung from an overhead rack. When you're finished cooking, just toss it in the dishwasher to clean it. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy with purchase
This is a well-made spatula. It is stiff (but not brittle) and doesn't bend much when lifting heavy items. Our old plastic spatulas would burn easily - this one still looks new after 3 months.I also like the fact that it has a fairly sharp edge so I can cut food with it - grilled cheese, hamburgers, chicken, etc.

I would definitely buy this one again.

    Hoffritz Stainless-Steel Mandoline Slicer

This professional mandoline slicer for slicing and shredding potatoes and other vegetables comes with everything you need: a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, a plastic storage lid, four interchangeable cutting blade cartridges, and a cutting slide with a safety guard. Just slide in the cartridge you need--thin slice, thick slice, julienne (1/8-inch), or french-fry cutter (1/4-inch)--press the safety guard with sharp prongs onto the end of the vegetable, and slice away. The safety guard rests on side rails over the blade so your hand can't slip, and the entire cutting slide apparatus snaps onto the top of the bowl. The stainless-steel bowl has four rubber grippers underneath so it won't slide while you're slicing. Pop the plastic storage lid on top and put leftovers in the fridge. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's simple mechanics, folks
I bought this item about 2 years ago and use it mostly for slicing potatoes and making cole slaw.It is very easy to use, and despite what you may have read from others, it is easy to remove the blades as well.I understand the problem well.If you grasp the edge of the blade without really paying attention to how it is designed, the tendency is to pull down a bit. This puts pressure on the small piece of plastic that is designed to lock the blade in place, thus causing you to fight against the "lock". If you pull the blade slightly upward and out, it slides out very easily. For that matter, straight out works, too. It may not be fancy, but for my needs, it works great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this item!!!
We received this mandoline as a Christmas gift, so we cannot return it without risking hurt feelings. It is cheaply made, has few cutting options, and worst of all, the blades are extremely hard to remove, resulting in a badly cut finger!

Hoffritz is apparently out of business (Salten has a license to sell some of their products, but not this one), and I can see why.

4-0 out of 5 stars First mandolin I ever had; I like it

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the directions exactly and it will change how you eat
I bought mine about a year ago, and it has made perfect pasta every time. It's easy as long as you follow the directions.Even my friends purchased pasta machines once they saw how easy it was and tasted the results!

I just use high gluten flour (bread flour).I hang my pasta on the kitchen towel rack on my island, but you can also use a sweater drying rack for big batches as long as you put a towel underneath it to catch any jumpers.

    I love this thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Try....Perfect Noodles
I saw this pasta maker recommended in Bon Appetit.I was over eager on the first sheet (not letting it dry enough) and it really gummed up the cutter. My recommendation would be to follow the directions in the manual exactly.Hey, I am a guy...we never read instructions! After rolling out a sheet, sprinkle a bit of flour on the counter and place the sheet on it....sprinkle a bit more flour on top of that and continue to alternate flour and sheets. After allowing the 20 minutes of drying time, you will find the flour makes the sheets easier to handle and aids in seperating the noodles once they are cut.It is definitely an art, and not a science, but I was amazed how good the noodles turned out.I can't wait for my ravioli cutter to arrive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nifty Gadget
I've had this gizmo for several years now and I love it, but I must be a lot messier than the rest of you guys -- after a pasta project my floor is pretty crunchy; since it's clamped so close to the edge of the table, a lot of the semolina goes on the floor. But it's fun and it's the real thing, the one used in Italian homes.

The only drawbacks I found are the same as other reviewers noted: the handle falls out and the one-sided clamp makes it lift when rolling stiffer dough. But you get used to it.In my experience letting the dough rest a bit before cutting is a big help.It seems to cut more smoothly.

I never use eggs in my pasta so I don't worry about eggy bits left behind, but an old toothbrush will get most of the crumbs out, and dry paper towels polish it right up (hint: roll a dry paper towel through a couple of times to absorb leftover moisture to prevent rust).

My favorite pasta is semolina (always!!) and chopped cooked spinach -- that's it, and this machine is sturdy enough to handle it.FYI, it's the protein in eggs that gives that special egg-noodle "bite", that can be obtained using simply egg whites or (believe it or not) plain yogurt.Semolina, yogurt, lemon juice, zest and cracked black pepper -- heavenly! This machine rolls nice sheets to cut in large squares for a simple "open" ravioli of winter squash, brown butter and sage. And you haven't lived if you've never had lasagne made with fresh pasta. Can you tell I like to cook? ;o)

It only takes a few batches to get a feel for proper dough consistency. You have to keep in mind that no two batches are alike, since it also depends on ambient temperature and humidity -- it's all part of the fun.

This pasta maker is well worth the price.I paid a lot more for mine several years ago -- pre Amazon.Try it, you'll like it. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Le Creuset is famous for coating its heavy, cast-iron cookware with not just one, but two--count 'em, two--layers of enamel baked on at 1,450 degrees F, resulting in gloriously bright colors. This bright-red, heart-shaped casserole adds a note of whimsy to dishes, but its 2-quart capacity, handles, and heavy-duty construction make it practical as well. Both its interior and exterior are enameled--as are the bottoms of all Le Creuset pots and pans--to prevent scratching glass-topped stoves. The enamel surface will not react with any acidic foods and is easy to clean. The weight and nature of cast iron make for even heat distribution. 5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Year Warranty says it all!
Not only are Le Creuset products beautiful, they are well designed and extremely durable. How many companies offer a 101 year warranty on cookware???? Le Creuset is the only one I know of to offer such a warranty, which in my opinion demonstrates the quality you receive when purchasing their items.

As for this particular design, it has to be my favorite, whether for special occassions or everyday use. I get so many compliments about my unique cookware.

Trust me, you'll be delighted if you purchase the Heart Casserole!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Be My Valentine with Whimsy, Beauty, and Function!
I have collected all of Le Creuset's fruit and vegetable shaped cast iron enameled casseroles. In my 40+ years of cooking these casseroles are at the top of my list for beauty and functionality. They are beautiful to display on a table or on a kitchen counter and very practical in cooking delightful casseroles, soups, stews and other wonderful dishes. The color that they can add to a kitchen brightens every vist there. The exterior and interior enamel coating is very durable and easy to clean. I have cooked a multitude of dishes in these casseroles and have found them to be excellent in heat conduction and preventing "hot spots". The wider and lower shaped casseroles are a little better in spreading the heat.

The warranty against defects of 101 years will certainly last beyond my expected needs but it is nice to know that I have the protection since these are not inexpensive purchases.

The comments of guests served from these casseroles is always positive and never fails to bring a smile to my face.

There is a drawback to these whimsical cookers and that is the rim of both the top and bottom of the casseroles. There is no enamel on these rims and they can rust if not dried immediately after hand washing. They are dishwasher safe but I do recommend that you hand wash and dry immediately. I also recommend that you let them sit out for an hour or so to air dry before storing them.

When wet this casserole can be very slippery and the handles on the bottom and top help in preventing dropping them. Be really careful!

Finally, closely inspect your casserole when it arrives. My first garlic casserole had a two inch crack in the enamel. I did not have to contact Le Crueset since Amazon.com immediately sent a replacement to me and had the defective item picked up at my home at no charge. I commend them for standing behind the products they sell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for others and yourself.....
I bought this little casserole for my daughter, and I liked it so much I bought one for me.The size is small enough for a casserole for a two-person household like mine, or a rice or bread pudding. Used for storage of leftovers--it is perfect.Besides, it's pretty.Great gift for yourself or others.

The only downside is that cast iron pans with enamel coverings are at risk for chipping. My pot came with little rubber separators that suspand the lid above the pot.My daughter asked me if she should take them off when she baked, and I said yes, but save them because they will protect the sides of your pot.

Another thing I like is that the pot came packed in biodegradable peanuts.Don't know if it was the French manufacturer or the shipping source, but keep up the good work. All shippers should take a hint. There is no need to use the old plastic peanuts. If the corn starch peanuts work with a heavy pan, they will work with anything. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This smaller version of George Foreman's famous "as seen on TV" Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine is perfect for preparing quick, low-fat meals for one or two people. The double-sided grill surface heats in less than five minutes to an even temperature perfect for grilling most foods. The high grill grooves and slight angle allow fat to run off the grill as food cooks, and the nonstick surface requires little or no additional fat for cooking. The plastic, grooved spatula works well to scrape off any bits that may have stuck to the surface.

Meats and fish are the obvious choices to take advantage of the Grilling Machine's fat-reduced grilling, but vegetables and tofu dogs work well too. The double-sided grill means food cooks twice as fast, leaves attractive grill marks, and generates surprisingly little smoke. --Julija Gelazis ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this - buy a convection oven
I agree completely with Mr. Charles Tsen.Every thing he has written about this grill is right.I had the misfortune of buying this after reading all the hype about this useless appliance.I bougth it more than a year ago and promised myself that i would never use it again. It is ridiculosuly difficult to clean and you simply will never get the desired results. For all those people looking to get a great fat reducing machine, I would recommend that they should consider "Nesco American Harvest JS-4000TE Jet Stream Oven" from Amazon or any other site.I have been using this convection oven for the past 6-7 years and am extremely satisfied. One tip in prolonging the life of this convection oven is to use a fresh paper towel on the tray to absorb all the fat before using it.

Quick heat up means a quick meal. As a busy single,I find that I can put a potato in the microwave, plug in the grill, preheat, put the meat on the grill and be ready by the time the potato is cooked and a vegetable is put together.Clean up is simple thanks to the nonstick coating. I cook everything, including eggplant on this grill. It is a definite necessity in my kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Foreman where have you been all my life??
This is such an awesome little piece of kit and have recommended it to so many people! My five star review i guess also takes into condideration the price we paid. We go this when it was reduced to $14.99 and I doubt that, pound for pound, you could get a better kitchen gadget for that price.

As I had previously seen this on tv infomercials I was a little sceptical as I always am of these "gadgets", but this really has changed our kitchen lives. It heats up so fast and cooks very quickly and evenly (due to it cooking both sides at once). We really love the speed - its great to know that in four/five minutes you can have a perfect tuna-stek or porkchop without having to fire up the oven. It also frees up the oven to cook other things for your meal.

Its just big enough to cook two chicken breasts or two burgers, a porkchop or steak. But it can also be used for sausage links, bacon, vegetables and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Some people have mentioned they have real problems cleaning it up. Whilst yes it could be better but you literally just scrape off any excess and wipe it down. If you dont want to have to do that then you need to buy the one with removable plates but it would have cost us three times as much.

Be warned thought that the fat-collecting drip tray shouldnt be put in the dishwasher - we did and it melted part of it. ... Read more
