    Editorial Review

Many products are touted for their uniqueness, or how they're revolutionizing this or that, but few live up the hype. Bodum's Santos coffeemaker is different, as it really is unlike other coffeemakers on the market. First off, it uses an electric vacuum brewing process, and secondly it lets you watch the whole thing. Fill the jug with cold filtered water, and place it on the power base. Then twist the funnel onto the jug. Next, add fresh coffee (a handy scoop is included) to the funnel and press the start button. As the water heats up to boiling, the vacuum created between the two parts moves water up the funnel, where the hot water and coffee mix together. Once the correct brewing time has elapsed, the heat turns off and the coffee drains back into the carafe through a nylon filter (nylon doesn't affect the taste of the coffee like paper filters).

In this system, coffee and hot water mingle for the optimum time, providing the best-tasting coffee possible. The process takes around 11 minutes for up to 12 cups of coffee (the minimum amount of coffee you can brew is four cups). The jug and the funnel are both made of sturdy polycarbonate, and the funnel is dishwasher-safe. (Clean the jug by hand, as it's not submersible.) Other features include a 40-ounce capacity, a 24-hour timer, a slide-out funnel holder, a keep-warm feature, and an automatic shutoff feature. Neither the bottom of the jug nor the top of the power base gets hot during brewing, because the heating element is in the middle of the jug's base.

There are a couple of things to remember when using the electric Santos. Always use fresh coffee, ground medium, for best results (stay away from using coffee from a can or powdered coffee), and use one level scoop of ground coffee per cup. So, for a full 12-cup pot, you'll use 12 scoops. After testing, if the coffee is too strong, begin tapering off the number of scoops. Also, remember that there will always be a small amount of water left in the coffee pot during the brewing process. This is a normal safety feature.

When cleaning the Santos, don't scrub the nylon filter clean--it should be rinsed under warm water. The coffee grounds from the upper section can be scooped out into the garbage can or compost using a common kitchen spatula. Then, simply wash the top section with dish soap and warm water. Also rinse the coffee pot with warm water as soon as you are finished drinking coffee. After rinsing, leave the lid open and let the coffee pot air dry. Every so often, clean the pot with a basic de-liming agent.

The Santos also recently won a prestigious gold Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the consumer products division. Award-winners are selected by the Industrial Designers Society of America. There were 1,260 entries from around the world in the contest, and only 44 gold awards were given. --A.J. Rathbun ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!
I used the rest of some mexican coffee beans that I didn't like with my old drip maker to make the first pot of coffee with this Bodum.

I was blown away by the flavor. There are nuances of good flavor without the bitterness.I taste subtle notes of cinnamon, etc.

This is the best coffee I've ever made, and possibly ever had.Again, I ground the beans right before the brew and just used the scoop included with the Bodum per cup as recommended and brewed an 8 cup pot.

Delicious. If you're a coffee snob or just like an absolutely delicious cup of coffee, then you will be pleasantly surprised.I will never go back to drip. Can't make me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee but quality concerns to be aware of
The following begins with our review ofthe smaller Bodum but goes on with updates to the larger one we now own:

I regret that my first online review must be negative, but . . .

    Pros:
    > Great cup of coffee. We found that changing the filter every month, even if not broken, keeps the flavor at its best. No matter how you clean the filter, a new one, for some reason, clearly improves the taste.
    > Quick and relatively easy to use. Clean up is more work than a traditional machine, but the coffee flavor makes it worth it.

    Cons:
    > Unfortunately, the quality does not yield longevity. We bought ours in April 2004. Since then:
    a) The lid tabs broke so if you forget and simply poor a cup, you have coffee everywhere as the lid pops off.
    b) By January 05, there is coffee leaking around the bottom of the pot. Clearly the plastic body is failing and it looks like we will need to replace this unit soon.

For the record, we have used this almost daily as our primary coffee machine but everything has been cleaned by hand (no dishwasher cleaning which is not recommended). So we are sure that we have used it as intended, but the construction quality simply was not up to the daily usage in our experience.

Now for the hard part: Finding a replacement that brews as good a cup as this, but one that will last!

ADDENDUM: (Or Addendumb?) Okay, so it is roughly one week later and now the handle to the coffee pot has broken off entirely. A third problem in less than a year! I plan to contact Bocdum so we will see what they say, but it wouldn't seem too unreasonable to expect a coffee maker to work once daily for more than 9 months, right? And to make matters worse, not having found a suitible replacement based upon all my research, we are now awaiting delivery on our new 12 cup Bodum Santos! God help us!

Update #2: You can read the info below and see my concerns. You will also note that we replaced the smaller unit with the larger one, even with the quality concerns. So as a quick update on the larger one, the same seems to be the case - great coffee, but questionable build quality. We have used the unit now for about 5 months and we do use it daily. The tabs on the lid have broken as they did on the small one. So far, that is the only thing, but it is one of those frustrations that can result in coffee everywhere if someone does not know it and fails to keep a finger on the top when pouring! Perhaps the other issues will not surface, but a quick failure of a simple thing like the lid, twice in two units, does not inspire confidence. (I need another cup of coffee!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee a small pain to clean
I have used this coffee maker for well over a year. I have two. One at the house(clear) and one for the employees at a store we own(orange). So, they get used everyday and one of them several times a day. Out of all the coffee makers I have owned in the last fifteen years this one makes the best coffee. Neither coffee maker has had one problem. I think most of the problems in the reviews are probably failure to follow directions. Two things to remember 1) do not make less than the recommended amount of coffee 2)Rinse the pot out after you finish using the coffee maker. The only draw back to this coffee maker is the potential mess you make cleaning the grounds out. This coffee maker gets a 5 for coffee, but I gave it a 4 because of the difficulty in cleaning the top. If you are in a rush, have a hard time operating simple devices, or like a burnt taste in your coffee do not get this coffee maker. If you are willing to follow simple directions and put in a small amount of effort to get great coffee this maker is the one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Got what I expected
It does exactly what I expected.I have had no problems with the device as of yet. I take it hiking and biking and it does the job.

However, now that I have it, it would be nice if the disks were double if not triple the storage space. It's kind of a drag to change the disk in such short intervals. But again, I knew how much data they would hold before I bought it.This also means I carry about 6 disks with me at a time to make sure I have plenty of music.

It's a trade off.I didn't really want one of the bigger jukeboxes and still don't see the need.I don't want to manage that much music when I'm trying to enjoy what I'm doing. With the hipzip it's like playing a mixed CD everytime you stick one in so music management is cake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best equipment, OK for runners.
    Pros:

    Simple.
    Small.
    Stable.
    A well known manufacturer.
    Rechargable. (budget friendly).
    Reusable storage.

    Cons:
    40 minutes playing time.
Beefy. (for running: dances in the shirt's pocket)

3-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This!!!!
It is only cool if you only need for flights or short car trips and so on. I use mine for the gym, if it works it's great but the problem in for one it DOES NOT play for 12 hours!!! If it only has a half charge it will die very shortly. Also it only gets a full charge if you completly run out the batteries, so if you have a half charge it will not fully charge. I have contacted the company and they said to run out the batteries and then charge it up. You are better off getting one with replaceable battery such as AA,AAA and so on, so you always know how much play time you have..I am in the market for one with replaceable battery ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nice but I wish I had bought a different one
I bought this based upon the reviews that said it didn't leak. They are wrong. I have used it three times and it leaks when you shake it. If I had bought it at Target, it would be returned. Kohls has one with a gasket. I would buy that one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stylish but Lacking in Functionality
I got this thing out of the box and was really impressed with it's looks but the fun stopped there. While I was checking my nice little chrome shaker out I tilted it to the side and the top proceeded to fall off.Worried, I put some ice and a bit of simulated gin (H20) inside, gave it a few shakes and it leaked everywhere.Good thing this wasnt real gin! I dont know if this is just mine but I wasnt impressed with the the functionality.Going with Oneida.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant in its Simplicity
This shaker will bring out the dashing martini or margarita drinker in just about anyone.Looking to impress chicks with your suave mastery of the bar - this will do the trick. Looks great, chills drinks, and of course goes well with cool glassware (invest in Martini glasses or margarita glasses). You don't have to worry about spillage and the built in strainer makes any drink easy. Now if I just had a cool tray to put all of this stuff on. Seriously though, it's a great addition and will make you more likely to tinker with what's in your bar, as opposed to reaching for yet another beer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bang for the Buck
This product is very powerful and reliable.I have owned the cheaper models and this is much much better.I don't know how it compares to a Champion though because I haven't ever used one.To clean the screen/blade simply use a vegetable brush, it won't get completely clean but it will do an acceptable job.You won't be able to use the brush for anything else, probably, but that is an extremely small loss for higher quality of life.
When I get into a massive load of vegetables, unfortunately I usually forget to clean the pulp inside which leads to problems as most of you probably know.I am not a friendly user when it comes to electronics and sort, but this has lasted me well over 5 or 6 years, although I confess I do not juice quite as often as I would like...averageing about once a month.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Juicer Good Price - Find it on sale!
I like this juicer a lot. The only downside is that it is a little loud and for optimum juice production you have to clean the spinning mesh screen every couple of items.Because I liked juicing so much, I thought maybe a more expensive Omega 2005 model would be even better. I bought the Omega but found out that it produced slush instead of juice. I am returning the Omega and staying loyal to Juice Lady. They say that centrifugal juicers heat up juice and kill nutrients, but I think that juicers of this sort have do little damage to the nutrients. Yes it spins and creates some friction, but the juice is not even warm when it comes out. When I tried using the Omega 2005 model, I juiced carrots and apples. I was dissapointed that the quantity of the juice was so bad. The omega produced less than 1/4 of the juice that the Juice Lady did on the same amount of carrots and apples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For The Serious Health-Conscience Juicer!

    ReplayTV 2020 Digital Video Recorder
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $399.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

With Replay's 2020 personal television server, it's easy to watch whatever you want, whenever you want, with or without commercials. ReplayTV's 2020 server provides up to 20 hours of storage space and offers a host of upgrades, including an advanced programmable remote control with a new Replay Zones button that makes it very easy to find the shows you want to record.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of television servers, ReplayTV records programs digitally and stores the information on a hard drive. Like a VCR, you can record your favorite show while you're away from home and watch it later. However, unlike VCRs, the personal TV server doesn't require tapes or other software to store programming.

It's important to point out that the actual amount of storage space depends on the video-recording quality that you select. A higher-quality picture will take up more storage space than a lower-quality recording. At the lowest setting, the picture quality is still better than standard VHS. At the middle setting, the picture quality is better than an S-VHS VCR, but storage capacity decreases by approximately 40 percent. If you leave the 2020 at the middle setting, you can anticipate approximately 12 hours of storage space. The highest-quality setting approaches 500 lines of resolution (depending on the source), but further reduces storage capacity to about six hours of recording time. We recommend using the High Record Quality setting for movies and the middle level for sporting events and other programs, then erasing the content after watching it.

One of the coolest features on the 2020 server is the ability to pause a live broadcast and resume watching it from where you left off. ReplayTV acts as a time buffer by storing the show in memory. A Return to Live button on the remote lets you skip forward to real time, which is great if you're watching a sporting event and want to catch up to the live action. There's also an Instant Replay button on the remote that allows you to rewatch portions of a show in 7-second increments, so you're not limited to rewatching only a brief segment.

ReplayTV also allows you to personalize programming for a specific theme. For example, you can set ReplayTV to monitor TV listings and record programs featuring a specific actor. You can also refine theme-based searches for programming. For instance, if you wish to record the sitcom "Friends," you can limit your search to title only, so ReplayTV won't pull up every movie and talk show that has the word "friends" in the description.

ReplayTV's onscreen guide appears with a blue background and white characters that are very readable. Since you'll be using the guide a lot to search for programs and to preview descriptions, it's important that you can read the text on a standard-size TV from your sofa.

We loved ReplayTV's Quick Skip feature, which allows you to instantly jump ahead 30 seconds, so you can skip through TV commercials on prerecorded programs. We also like the Replay Zones, which make it very easy to find programs that suit your tastes by searching according to genre. ReplayTV delineates programming into a wide variety of categories, from action and romance movies to cooking and home-improvement shows--and everything in between. ReplayTV also offers a Search Zone that allows you to input words such as "love" or "vacation" using the remote control and an onscreen keypad.

If you wish to save a particular prerecorded show, you can record it onto a VCR using the back-panel outputs. We were impressed by ReplayTV's inclusion of two sets of audio-video inputs and outputs, as well as an S-video input and output. This enables users to hook up a DSS or other direct-broadcast satellite receiver to the 2020, along with a VCR as an output device.

You can watch one program while recording another by using a cable TV splitter. Simply connect the cable from the wall to the splitter's input line; then connect a spare coaxial cable from the splitter's output line to the 2020, and another from the splitter to the TV. To watch a show while recording another, use the TV button on the Replay remote to switch sources (assuming you've input your TV brand's IR code into Replay's universal remote control).

One neat feature we really like is the ability to place the 2020 into "quiet mode," simply by turning off the unit. This keeps the server from automatically recording shows to the hard drive, which conserves power and keeps the hard disk from spinning. If you happen to be recording a show when you turn the 2020 off, it will continue to record, then shut down once the show is finished and stored in the hard drive.

Connecting the 2020 to our home theater system took about 15 minutes. Replay Networks thoughtfully provides a poster-size chart to guide users through setup so they don't have to open the manual. If you have an open phone jack, we recommend using it. Otherwise, you can use the supplied splitter to connect the 2020 to an existing line. (You do not need a dedicated phone line, since ReplayTV's programming updates occur for only a few minutes in the early morning hours.) You can also purchase a 56K wireless transmitter/receiver, which plugs into a wall outlet and allows you to connect the 2020 to an existing phone line across the room or in another part of the house.

Dialing into ReplayTV to download the free programming guide was much easier than we expected. In only 20 minutes, we received the weekly programming data and software updates from ReplayTV, and we were ready for couch potato duty. One major advantage to ReplayTV is that it doesn't charge any monthly service fee for program guide downloads.

We like the fact that ReplayTV's service is nonintrusive. After all, the whole concept of personal TV servers is intended to liberate viewers, so they can watch the programs they prefer, whenever they feel like it. ReplayTV is designed to make it as easy as possible for customers to find the programs they like and to record them for future enjoyment. --Eric Gill

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy ReplayTV
I bought the replaytv 60 hr unit and have had nothing but problems for 7 months. The first unit had a problem with the modem. It would connect to the server only once in a great while. The next 4 (that's right 4 replacement units that replayTV sent) all skipped. I should say they skipped and froze up to be acurate. The last unit not only skipped but also rebooted itself every half hour or so. I am currently waiting for the next unit(these were all different units with different serial numbers not my same unit repaired) but I have given up hope of ever having a working unit. The fact that 5 different units have had problems shows the widespread unreliability of the ReplayTV hardware. When replaytv works it is great but this got to be the worst electronics device I have ever had as far as reliability and I have had quite a few. The first unit I had worked great other than the modem problem. It recorded everything and was a joy to use. The only problem is that if the modem does not work then the on screen tv listings are not updated and you eventually can't record the shows you want. The other units they sent have just been horrible and the last unit with the rebooting was the worst. I am very technically oriented and after countless hours with their tech support each time it was determined that it was hardware/software defects. Replaytv has tried to get the problems resolved but 5 replaytv units not working is just too much. What ever you do...don't buy ANY ReplayTV products or you will get to know their tech. support people very well. Remember, if I have had a problem with 5 different units than the likelyhood that you will have a problem is probably pretty good no matter which model you buy. If you want a DVR then look at Tvio; they can't be worse than RepalyTV. I don't own Tivo but if I had it to do over again....I guess the $9.95 a month doesn't seem so much now. I spent $65.00 shipping it back the first few times before I got ReplayTV to pay shipping each way on later units. Stay away from anything ReplayTV.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for the 1st month or so
