Lodge 3-Quart Cast Iron Chicken Fryer with Iron Lid
by Lodge Logic
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $37.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Lodge has been making cast-iron cookware for over 100 years. And thanks to cast iron's excellent durability, some of the original pans are probably still around. It's not hard to see why cast-iron pans are the ones most often passed down from generation to generation--nothing can dent, warp, or bend their heavy construction. This 3-quart cast-iron chicken fryer consists of a 3-inch-deep fry pan, which works with any dish that requires a wide, deep cooking surface, and a tight-fitting lid to protect you from splatters. Cast iron has excellent heat retention, so you don't need to cook over high temperatures. Also, unlike many cooking surfaces, it actually becomes more stick-resistant as it ages and develops its characteristic dark finish. If you're concerned about nutrition, cast iron has been proven to safely add iron to food. Because iron can rust, this pan should not be immersed in water for long periods, and it should stay out of the dishwasher. Just wash it with soap and water and quickly dry, avoiding abrasive cleaners. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pop for the extra couple dollars!
It's a pan, we cook in it, but it took forever to get rid of the metallic taste in our food (yes, we seasoned it per the instructions). We know now that we shold have put out the few bucks more to get a pre-seasoned pan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it as a coffee bean roaster, not a chicken fryer
I think this chicken fryer is a good idea, as is any cast iron skillet for chicken, but it's too small to fry chicken in the amounts we fry it in.It can barely fit two of our home grown chicken breasts, or three of the smaller, store-bought ones. It works well for making something like almond chicken, when it's not as important for the chicken pieces keep their distance from each other. I don't think it's necessary to have a lid to make fried chicken.Ours turns out wonderfully, cooked in a regular old huge cast iron skillet. We don't use a slow cook method (35-40 minutes, Betty Crocker, are you kidding me?), and the chicken comes out juicy, even without a lid.

The reason I give this skillet five stars is that I do LOVE it for roasting green coffee beans. The high sides are very helpful... I can get almost a pound of beans roasted with my method of continuous stirring, and I hardly lose any over the sides. When it's my husband's turn to roast, he uses the lid and heavy duty oven mitts and shakes the whole pan at intervals. We both think that roasting coffee would be a real hassle without this particular pan.The oil that comes from the coffee beans makes a wonderful pan seasoning, too.We re-season all our cast iron (when we need to just re-season the bottom of the pan, not for the initial seasoning) by roasting coffee beans on the stovetop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another must have in the kitchen
I have a family of 5 and we use our fryer almost weekly.Works great for bacon to keep your stove top cleaner and anything else you want to cook. ... Read more

Sabatier Precision 14-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Block Set
by Sabatier
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $110.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

You won't be missing a single cutting tool with this 14-piece cutlery block set from Sabatier. It contains a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, an 8-inch chef knife, an 8-inch slicer, an 8-inch bread knife, a 6-inch boning knife, six 5-inch steak knives, a pair of kitchen shears, a sharpening steel, and a 14-slot block to keep them in. The knives are made from high-carbon stainless steel, which is the industry standard, and have full tangs, meaning that the steel goes all the way through the handle. These knives feel a little lighter than professional quality sets, and won't hold the same razor-sharp edge, but for those looking for a complete starter set these will work just fine. The shears are a nice bonus when cutting through bones or joints, and they'll cut through bags and boxes and do a fine job of snipping herbs into a sauce. The sharpening steel helps to keep the blade true, and the block keeps tools handy and protected. --Maria Dolan

1-0 out of 5 stars junk
These knives are pure junk! I bought 2 sets and have thrown both of them out already. It says they are stainless but the do rust. Also, they don't hold an edge and are almost impossible to sharpen.Don't waste your money.Save up a little more and get a decent set on sale at at kitchen store.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to sharp
This set looks nice on the screen, the blades are thick and very hard to sharp. The sharpener that comes with the set is practically useless.I won't recomend this set to any one

2-0 out of 5 stars too dull
straight edge knives were very dull, and they don't take a sharpening well or keep it past one good use.
the steak knives are okay since they are serated. the kitchen scissors are kitchen scissors. wouldn't use them for anything else like sewing.
take your money and but one good knive like a wustoff. you'll be far happier.

Editorial Review

Need an icebreaker? Want to work out some aggression without shin guards and helmets? Popomatic Trouble, Milton Bradley's classic race-and-chase game, is guaranteed to bring out your competitive side. Try to outstrip your opponents as you race your pawns around the colorful plastic board to safety. Should you have the good fortune to land on a space occupied by another player, you can send him reeling back to start, where he must wait for a six to pop up (literally) on the capricious dice bubble in the center of the board. Once liberated, your foe is free to reciprocate--now you're in Trouble.

The crystal ball on which the fates of all rest, a.k.a. the Popomatic Dice Bubble, is the genius behind this game, and is one reason it has become a classic. Encased in its bubble, the die never goes flying, rolls off the table, or gets lost. Simple to learn and exciting to play, Popomatic Trouble is a game that never loses its thrill. Popomatic Trouble is for two to four players. --Julie Ubben ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Trouble - Popomatic - Good Family Fun
Trouble is a classic game - Milton Bradley brings us the classic board game that is fun for the whole family to play.
Four players can play this, my only concern is the popper, I wonder how long it will last, the metal popper is a little flimsy and may break over extended use - we'll see. You can always use some dice as a backup.Game is fun for the family to play.

I purchased this along with Connect Four, good games next to Checkers and Chess.

3-0 out of 5 stars They sure do make them like they used to.......
My (6 year old) daughter received this classic for Christmas and we played the game that evening. Suffice it to say, the instuctions are the same and the fun of the game is the same as when I received it as a gift MANY years ago, however the durability has gone down hill big time. I cannot believe how cheap it is now, from the cheesy cardboard used with the graphics under the board, to the cheaper feeling plastic used for the pegs. The popomatic dice keeper even feels cheap and 1/2 the time my daughter pops it, it remains on the same number on the dice. Aren't there any companies out there that take pride in their products anymore? It seems not. I can't wait to open the Connect Four game - hopefully it won't fall apart before we play it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be made a lot better...
I'm a 27 year old mother of 3.I remember loving this game when I was a kid. I was so dissapointed when I opened this game. I couldn't believe how cheesey it is.You can barely 'POP' the dice. And when my kids POP the bubble all the game pieces fly around. Plus the bottom of the game has a pop in piece of cardboard.Shouldn't the bottom be covered with hard plastic??

I also wish there was something to hold all the pieces because my kids (like many others) abuse the box and all of the pieces fall out and get lost.
****Can't the board game makers start making harder cases or Tins so we all don't have a stack of smashed boxes and missing pieces.

The game itself is fun...but I ended up throwing it away because pieces got lost way to fast. ... Read more
