Small Log Homes: Storybook Plans and Advice by Gibbs Smith Publishers Average Customer Review: Hardcover (05 May, 2001) list price: $21.95 -- our price: $14.93 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (4)
It tells you, for example, that you should make careful and deliberate use of all the space by planning it carefully, but does not show examples of good planning, give you thought provoking questions to ask yourself, or anything that could help you do it. The book mentions that there are 2 types of log cabins, names them and gives a few uncaptioned photographs, without even one word to tell you what the advantages of one over the other might be. It tells you that a complicated roof is more expensive than an uncomplicated one. Did you need to be told? It does not tell you what the choices are in roof styles, the advantages and weather reasons you might want one more than the other, dispite the cost, and it certainly does not tell you what the price differences are (even an approx % difference would have been a start). It does not suggest anything useful and should only be bought by someone who is on their way to the log home manufacturer in their area so that they can point to the pictures in the book and facilitate the teaching the company will then have to provide. This is for a person buying a finished, installed product, not building a home. I was very disappointed and would never have bought this book if I had seen it in a bookstore. It is meant for someone who buys magazines exclusively for the pictures and does not read the articles. This will not help you build a house.

The Colosseum by J. Paul Getty Museum Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 December, 2001) list price: $75.00 -- our price: $47.25 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (1)
Over 150 color illustrations and 127 black and white images trace the Colosseum from the day of its inauguration in A.D. 80 to the present. It oncewhich covered six acres of land, sat between 12 and 15 stories above ground, and held over 50,000 spectators.Scholars representing art, architecture, and antiquities bring their expertise to an depth look at the gladiators' life and world. As we know, the bloody battles in which they engaged were the original attractions. It is amazing to learn how closely these events parallel contemporary spectacles - the recruitment and training of participants, creating eye-popping scenery, providing wardrobes, ticket sales, etc. It was only when arguments arose concerning amphitheater games that the fighting came to a halt. A detailed examination of the building's exterior and interior architecture is included, as well as complete views of the warren of underground areas constructed for gladiators and animals. - Gail Cooke ... Zenith R60V26 60" HDTV-Ready Projection TV by Zenith Electronics list price: $3,299.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Zenith's massive, 60-inch high-definition projection monitor offers complete compatibility with progressive-scan DVD players and digital TV set-top box decoders. Its staggering 1,200 lines of horizontal resolution display either 540p or 1080i formats and benefits from a host of Zenith technologies, including a sophisticated up-conversion process for rendering 480i (such as a DVD player's RCA composite-video outputs) as high-resolution 540p. The R60V26 tops previous Zenith models with an enhanced HD lens system, which improves image brightness and focus. A computer-configured, 9-point digital-focus array actually looks at 117 points, interpolating between points to yield an image that is razor sharp from center to edge. The set's image is further sharpened by its .52 mm screen pitch. The R60V26 also offers 3:2 pull-down detection, which detects and synchs film to video for smooth theaterlike pictures. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pull-down digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame accurate picture on your TV. Most HDTVs perform up-conversion (or line doubling) of analog signals to simulate a high-definition picture, and sometimes this process introduces artifacts that appear as pixilated scenes due to the digital conversion. The R60V26's improved HD driver increases both vertical and horizontal resolution to produce images that are free from picture artifacts. True HD signals are not affected by this process, which leaves them as true to life as possible. Advanced scan-velocity modulation improves the definition at picture edges, sharpening images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Jacks include three RF (radio-frequency) inputs (for VCR, cable boxes), two high-resolution component-video inputs, two S-video inputs, one S-video output, two sets of AV inputs, one set of AV outputs, and one set of variable analog-audio outputs so you can control levels from your TV's remote even when you're listening through your amplifier or AV receiver. ... Cigars by Flammarion Average Customer Review: Hardcover (17 May, 2002) list price: $29.95 -- our price: $18.87 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (2)
The writing, however, reads like a series of articles rather than a well planned discussion of cigars.Very poorly written.A tremendous bias towards Cuban cigars is also present.Imagine, if you will, a book about automobiles...in which the only recommendations are that you buy Roll Royce.Cubans are the un-paralleled pinnacle of the cigar smoker's world, having smoked them on a trip to Canada I can certainly attest. However, to reduce the world of cigars to nearly one nation, as this book does, is limiting. Buy this book if you want to LOOK well educated about cigars...or if you want to convince yourself that only a Cuban will do.

An audible alarmsounds when the shaver requires recharging on its storage stand. Treasures of the Baseball Hall of Fame : The Official Companion to the Collection at Cooperstown by Villard Average Customer Review: Hardcover (19 May, 1998) list price: $39.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Hall of Fame is baseball's mecca; every true fan should make the pilgrimage to Cooperstown at least once in a lifetime. And while Treasures, officially sanctioned by the National Baseball Hall of Fame, can't replace the real thing, it can certainly whet appetites, rekindle memories, and fire up imaginations. Large in size and packed with illustrations, it is great show-and-tell; scores of beautifully photographed artifacts are on display with accompanying text to explain their significance. Flip the pages and you'll find Ruth's and Mantle's locker, Cobb's spikes, Shoeless Joe's shoes, Mays's glove, Aaron's bat--and that barely scratches the horsehide. Besides batracks of expected (and unexpected) Major League memorabilia, other treasures include relics from the Negro Leagues, the minor leagues, and the All-American Girls Baseball League as well as momentos from the press box, the library, the movies, and the art gallery. Sweeping from the mythic Doubleday ball to the present--Treasures would have benefitted from some more recent remembrances--it celebrates the game with affection and bravura, and through its very celebration, offers tangible insight into the National Pastime's firm grip on the national consciousness. --Jeff Silverman ... Penis Enlargement Facts and Fallacies: All Men Are Not Created Equal by Hourglass Book Pub Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 July, 1995) list price: $19.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (12)
If readers have feelingsof inadequacy before they read this text, I feel sorry for them aftercoming away from even a quick read. I am 8", and I wonder if Griffinwould consider me endowed. Strangely, although the author has not problemspouting off about the size of many of his friends' and celebrities'penises, he never mentions himself; feeling inadequate, Griffin? Theauthor is very concerned about homosexual issues, but he, once again, ishardly academic in his approach. The author writes in a style that suggestshe is not yet comfortable with his sexual identity and really, really needsto assert that he is a bonafide man! His voice could be summarized as this:"I'm no homosexual! I'm a real man, and I do manly things. Let's lookat some pictures of naked men and make fun of the guys with smallpenises!" This text seems like Griffin's way of playing a joke ontruly interested readers. Griffin suggests dangerous and idiotic ways ofchanging genital size. Vacuum tubes? Stretching? Weights? Surgery? Consulta doctor, NOT Griffin. Unless, of course, you want a stretched, permanentlyimpotent penis. Sexuality is not a joke, and Griffin's suggestions arecriminal and dangerous to the healthy functioning of the genitals. If youlike pictures of penises, look here. He has a lot of them, including grossenlargements. My favorite is a picture of a 6" penis enlarged to fitan entire page (this is a large/wide book). Very juvenile. No pictures of"Long Dong Silver" or discussion of his condition of impotence, either. Readers can see an African tribesman with a stretched penis(purported to be 16"), but I doubt the poor thing works anymore, andthe photo appears to come from an ancient copy of National Geographic.Griffin includes an obviously doctored photograph of one of his friends,"a true horseman," whose penis would rival Arnold Schwarzenger'sforearm in length and girth; cut and paste, anyone? Most of the photos inthe text are of poor quality, none better than a photocopy of aphotograph. If you like racial stereotypes, look here. Griffin saysblacks have wider (more girth) penises. He says Asians do not have largepenises. How nice. Perhaps he can say in future texts that blacks arenaturally good dancers and Asians are naturally good at math. These arejust stereotypes, not truths. Griffin just has not done enoughhomework. If you want a non-serious book that you can read and laugh atwith friends, Griffin's text fits the bill. Otherwise, skip it. If you wantto read a serious bunch of hearsay on celebrity sizes, take a gander atthis text and put it back on the shelf (and don't believe half of it; JohnDilinger was not the endowed man he is reputed to be. This rumor wasstarted by the newspaper photo of his corpse, and it is his arm, not hispenis that is in the final stages of rigor mortis, holding the sheet up. Doyour homework, Griffin). Be happy with who you are, not how much youare. Live a healthy lifestyle, practice a healthy sexuality (free ofrepression), and learn to appreciate and love yourself and all themysteries you hold; follow these simple rules and your self-esteem willgrow larger than any penis Griffin can photograph and enlarge. Our brainsare ultimately the sex organs, and we are all blessed in one way oranother. You might not be able to get bigger, but you certainly can bebetter! ... Read more Isbn: 0934061246 |

Gay Men, Straight Jobs by Alyson Books Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 September, 2001) list price: $14.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
Gay Men; Straight Jobs was a very poor attempt to interview a group of interesting men.Mr Woog seemed to have a set formula (a very poor formula at that) which he followed with each man he interviewed. The book provided little insight into the interviewed men's lives and provided a very dull read. There was no attempt by the author to tie threads of commonality or diversity between the different people.Life is not whether you are out or not; its how you lead your life which is important.
