Creative Labs NOMAD 6 GB MP3 Player Silver

    list price: $349.99

    Editorial Review

One of our biggest frustrations with MP3 players has been their limitedstorage capacity. You'll typically get 64 MB via internal memory or memorycards, which provides just a little over an hour of near CD-quality MP3 audio. So when we heard that Creative was releasing a 6 GB player that can hold over100 hours of music, it sounded perfect. Soon we'd be rifling through a massivecatalog of tunes on our little player, from Elvis Costello to LL Cool J to MilesDavis, whenever the whim struck.

The Nomad Jukebox is essentially a portable hard drive with software that willplay MP3 audio. Since hard drives include spinning and moving parts, this playeris not ideal for active MP3 users from joggers to snowboarders.

We cracked open the box, inserted the rechargeable batteries (two sets of fourAAs are included), plugged in the AC adapter, and waited the recommended 12hours for them to charge initially. This is a very important step. This was oursecond set of batteries--we didn't bother to heed Creative's initial chargingdirections when we first got the product, and our first set of batteries soonlost the capacity to be recharged.

After installing the included software (we tested the Jukebox on a Macintosh G4using SoundJam MP; for PCs, Creative includes PlayCenter 2) and connecting theUSB cable, we quickly deleted 2 GB of starter MP3 and audiobook files andstarted loading our own music. We started with about 500 songs, but noticedafter the load had finished that not all the songs made it onto the Jukebox. Also, the SoundJam software didn't like us doing any other work on our Mac G4,stalling out the load whenever we switched to another program.

We found it was best to load in smaller numbers and to keep SoundJam up as theactive application (unfortunately, not the most efficient use of computer time). The transfer rate is about 6 minutes per 100 MB, which translates to around 25songs. (So far, we've loaded 861 songs and we still have over 2.3 GB left ofstorage.)

Once music has been transferred to the Jukebox, you need to create an activeplaying list by navigating one of three lists--artists, albums, and genres--thenadding songs to the queue. (This points out the need for creating thorough ID3tags, an electronic label that can include song title, track number, year, andmore. ID3 tags can be created via the PlayCenter and SoundJam software manuallyor be imported from the online CDDB database. For more information abouttagging, see the Amazon.comMaking MP3s Guide.) Playlists canbe saved in the Jukebox, though it can be a bit tedious (there's no keyboard),and you can't add songs to an existing playlist.

The Jukebox also sports some nice additions. It has a line-in recordingcapability (using an external microphone) that records WAV files that can beadjusted for optimal (or low-end) sound quality, and it can play audiobooks.

The biggest downside to the Nomad Jukebox is its portability. As noted, it doesrun on rechargeable batteries, but they'll last far less than the advertised twohours. Also, this isn't the device to take jogging; its internal hard drive, though somewhat shock and motion resistant, just won't take that kind ofactivity. It's really made for stationary play using its included AC adapter.

It also has a few playback glitches, the biggest being that you can't fast- forward or rewind within a song. Also, there's no bookmark feature for audiobooklistening--a necessity for long files.

Ultimately, the Creative Nomad Jukebox isn't perfect and isn't suited foreveryone's MP3 needs. But it has become a staple of our gadget life--it travelswith us daily to the office and hooks in nicely into stereo systems, both athome and at friends' houses. Someday, we'll all wonder what we did without anMP3 jukebox. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

    Pros:

    • 6 GB of storage is massive--over 1,000 songs
    • Several methods for selecting playlist songs (artist, album, and genre)
    • Line-out for connecting to stereo systems, and line-in for recording
    Cons:
    • Battery power is sucked up quickly
    • Prone to skipping/stalling when used in heavy activity

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 years later and still going strong
While my Nomad Jukebox's structural integrity depends heavily upon duct tape, it still works like a charm.I've managed to break it a few times, and it was always pretty easy to repair just by ripping off the fuzzy things on the bottom and unscrewing those delightful miniscrews to reveal the magical guts of the player.Sometimes it gets fussy if I start and stop and start and stop like 3 different songs, but that's what the reset button is for.My only complaint is that USB 1.1 just seems so slow these days, I wish there was a magic wand that would all of a sudden give it some firewire capability.

2-0 out of 5 stars First Generation Jukebox, functional but has quirks
I bought this jukebox about a year ago before the version 2 came out.And boy did I get buyer's remorse when a few months later Creative introduced the Jukebox 2 with lithium batteries.I could not get more than 1-1/2 hrs with the enclosed batteries, and the Jukebox would reboot sometimes when going over a bump in the car. However I do enjoy the 6 GB of storage (now they have Jukeboxes with 40Gigs!), and since my CD collection isn't so large, I get to have it all with me.I bought a car adaptor, [it was out of stock in the Creative online store for months, and I did not get it until 6 months later].In the meantime, I could only use it for getting to sleep hooked to the AC adaptor.

One more thing, to the person who said that his jukebox would not even turn on with and without the batteries. You need to stick a pin or paper clip into the reset hole in the back while turning it on or off [if it is hung in the off position].I read how you bought all those accessories and feel for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Serious QC Problems
Do not buy Creative lab products. After contacting customer service multiple times about a warranty item, I talked to one of their techs, who said that they estimate 10% product failure on their products. My options were to pay to have it fixed, with another 10% chance that the repair could fail, or get the broken part back. They do not stand up behind their products.Don't throw your money away. ... Weber 825020 22 Performer Charcoal Grill with Propane Ignition, Light Blue
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Lawn & Patio
    list price: $499.99

    Editorial Review

If you like cooking on charcoal but also want the quick-start convenience of a gas grill, Weber's Performer may be just what you're looking for. The gas ignition system--which cannot be used for gas grilling--lights your fire at the push of a button. The cooking surface (22-1/2 inches in diameter) is big enough to accommodate six large steaks, twice as many burgers, or up to a dozen kebabs, and the grill's classic kettle shape keeps flare-ups to a minimum. The grill is durable, too. The porcelain-coated steel bowl and lid are exceptionally strong and designed never to rust, fade, or peel. The grill's aluminum vents and ash catcher won't rust either, and the tripod base, nylon handles, and all-weather wheels--besides being exceptionally sturdy--make the grill remarkably easy to maneuver. Weber's patented One-Touch cleaning system--a clever setup of lever-activated blades--sifts ash out of the kettle and into a cooking-pot-shaped ash catcher. You never have to get your hands dirty--and emptying the kettle takes only a few seconds.

The Performer also includes a dual-purpose thermometer, which monitors the cooking temperature inside the grill and doubles as a traditional meat thermometer. A sizeable stainless-steel work surface conveniently covers a charcoal storage bin large enough to hold up to 20 pounds of charcoal. The sturdy steel cart is sealed in a weather-resistant polyurethane enamel coating. A wire bottom shelf provides extra storage space. Crackproof, rugged all-weather wheels and locking casters make the grilling center easy to move and easy to park.

This grill comes partially assembled with clear step-by-step instructions. Even inexperienced grill mechanics can put it together in about an hour.

Editor's Choice: For grillers who love the taste of charcoal but crave the convenience of gas, we recommend Weber's Performer Grill. Simply lift the hinged cooking grate, add briquettes, and push one button to ignite the briquettes. Handy extras include a stainless-steel work space, a thermometer to check food for doneness, a steel shelf, rugged wheels, and a storage container to keep charcoal dry. When you're finished grilling, cleanup is a snap with the One-Touch cleaning system that includes a removable ash catcher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the 04' not the 05' model!!!
While the 04' model of the performer is slightly pricier than the latest 05' model, there is no comparision between the two models in terms of design, function, and useability. If you want the BEST charcoal grill made, your choice should be an 04' Performer!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A No-Fail Grill, Even for This Novice
I have owned only 2 grills in my lifetime. Both were little, cheap and unsuited to my novice grilling status.

When I committed to buy a real barbeque grill I read scores of reviews and descriptions to find the right one. After reading Amazon's customer reviews of the Performer (the 827020 22.5 inch Performer Charcoal Grill with Propane Gas Ingnition, purchased in Summer of 2003) I was so impressed I bought it.

What a grill!I don't know how Weber does it (convection, perhaps?)--even my overdone meats come out moist and flavorful.Veggies come out great--I grilled zucchini squash last summer, and YUMM!

This grill gives me the best of both worlds: gas and charcoal. The gas feature allows me to light up quickly, rain or shine. The small propane tank is not the primary energy source, so seldom needs refilling. Charcoal gives foods real barbeque flavor, and my gardens love Weber's convenient one step ash disposal system.

I cannot praise this grill enough.I only wish the newer version inspired more positive reviews, and hope friends I recommended the Performer to can still find this model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Grill Ever Made...Using Mine Since 1993
OK, I'm not a freak, but I love to grill and I own at least 5 Weber grills. This one is hands down the best.I've been using mine since 1993 and it is the one to own. Buy this model today as they have redesigned it without the stainless work area.

It's perfect for cooking, smoking, grilling, etc.Every Thanksgiving I cook the turkey on the grill and it's a hit every time. Also, leaves the oven free for other stuff. This is a mouth watering juicy turkey...every time.

Burgers come out great.Chicken.BBQ.I've done it all on this grill and it's great.Buy the cover and take care of this...it will be your favorite piece of cookware that you ever purchased.

Thanks Weber...it is the best. ... Read more

Memorex MPD8505CP Personal CD/MP3 Player with 45 Seconds of Anti-Skip Protection

    Electronics
    list price: $89.99

    Editorial Review

This shiny little unit is not your garden-variety cigarette-lighter-powered portable CD player, however much it resembles one. No, this player gives you something more: the ability to listen to MP3-encoded CDs, which, when you do the math, works out to far more megabytes for the buck than you'd get in a dedicated MP3 player.

Accommodating standard CDs as well as CD-Rs or CD-RWs brimming with MP3 or .WAV audio files, the Memorex MPD8505CP MP3-CD player packs high technology into a low-lying music player, giving you beck-and-call access to literally hours of music from a single MP3-encoded CD. And did we mention that it's far cheaper than any of its name-brand competition?

Each of the player's multifunction control buttons is used for standard CD controls like Play, Pause, Skip, or Stop, as well as programming functions such as File/Directory, File Search, Display, and the numbers and letters of the alphabet. That's right--unlike other MP3 CD players, this one shows track and artist information, and lets you add it as well. Unfortunately, the buttons aren't clustered together for ready access, but configured in an eleven-button semi-circle to memorize.

Imperceptive controls with multiple functions demand a good study of the manual to guide you through searching and programming. You'll also need to spend some time learning and remembering things like stop" also means "off", and other such hidden functions.

It also seems that due to the MP3 chip, start-up time is slower than on standard CD players. After loading a CD, we had to wait at least 10 seconds to be able to play, search, or adjust any of the controls. Meanwhile, the dark LCD display screen remains blank while you wonder if the unit is on or if the CD has been loaded correctly. Then, it takes an additional 10 to 15 seconds for it to play. While not a huge inconvenience, a portable unit for car use should react quickly to minimize the time spent fiddling with it.

The DBBS (Dynamic Bass Boost System) offers impressive bass reinforcement. The high end is bright and clear, although you'll hear some hiss with quieter tracks or during music featuring a soloist.

A 45-second "electronic skip protection" feature lets you use the Memorex on road trips, bus rides, or brisk walks, though we did experience occasional skips even on relatively sedate bus rides.

Memorex includes a complete car kit, a nice convenience. But despite its quirks (and despite its bulky and awkward design), this Memorex piece can be a good way to take music along any journey, long or short--especially when used with a good set of headphones. --Zoe Knight

    Pros:

    • Cheaper than name-brand competition
    • Car kit included

    • Anti-shock protection

    Cons:

    • Headphone jack hiss heard with quieter tracks

4-0 out of 5 stars Great unit with some flaws
For the price that I got (under $40) it was a very nice unit. I've had the unit for over six months now and so far, only some skipping occur, but not much at all. The skippings usually seem quite random, and doesn't happen because th eunit is being moved or anything like that. The unit I have contians the suffix A sticker.

The car kit that came with mine, though, is a little weird. At times the volume will be too soft for no reason, but mostly they all worked great.

The only things I really don't like about this unit are 1) the display LCD isn't backlit, making reading practically impossible at night, and 2) the search option is not very user friendly, and the unit doesn't seem to respond too well to it.

Over all, I give it 4 stars, for its price, and that it hadn't died on me yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
At first this seemed like a decent CD player. The headphones that come with it are pretty lame but fortunately I had another pair of my own. It's somewhat ugly and bulky but not unbearable. The search feature is very handy, especially when you've got MP3 CDs with 100+ tracks; it was very easy to find the song I wanted.

However the skip protection was disappointing from the beginning. Walking caused several skips per song and it would sometimes skip in the car. Don't even think about doing anything more than that with this player; it'll skip like crazy and drive you crazy. The worst thing, though, was that a few months after I started listening to it frequently it broke to the point where it now skips every few seconds when it's just sitting on my desk (with both regular and mp3 CDs). This happened after I had taken it on a few plane rides, so maybe that had something to do with it, although I'm not really sure how. Whatever happened, it's too annoying to listen to now.

Despite the nifty search function, I wouldn't recommend this CD player. It's got a lot of flaws and you can probably find something much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for a Bargain!!
This player is one of the best on the market for the money. It is rugged and plays regular CD's, CD-R's, and MP3's!! I get over 100 mp3s on one CD. I like to put it on shuffle play...it's like having your own jukebox with all your own favorite songs. Get one!! ... Read more

    Panasonic DVD-RV65 DVD Player

    Electronics

    Editorial Review

The Panasonic DVD-RV65 is a DVD player that will also play video CDs and regular format audio CDs. It has a built-in Dolby Digital decoder with DTS digital output and a 24-bit/96 kHz converter for amazing home theater sound. The Advanced V.S.S. surround sound feature allows for a remarkable surround effect even when only two speakers are used, and the dialogue enhancer feature ensures that dialogue is clearly heard above other sounds that may be present on the movie soundtrack.

Video features include a 10-bit video digital-to-audio converter for sharp picture quality; digital cinema mode for cinema-like luminance and color with improved detail even in dark scenes; and still-picture display, which freezes an image to allow for precise picture-quality adjustments. The RV65 also has five-speed smooth motion scan, which provides crystal-clear scans while locating desired locations on a disc. A chapter preview shows you the first three seconds of each previously viewed chapter. Or, use the title/chapter search with marker function to return to favorite sections quickly.

Dual digital-audio outputs (coaxial and optical) lend enhanced system flexibility, allowing for digital connection to Dolby Digital receivers. A component-video output allows for transmission of digital video with compatible video equipment for the clearest, sharpest playback possible.

Other convenient functions include frame advance (forward and reverse), onscreen menu icons to help guide operation, auto power off/resume play, quick-start helps to reduce waiting time for movies to begin, and a shuttle dial with command over reverse and fast-forward functions. To make the DVD player easy to control in even darkened rooms, a backlit remote control is provided.

Panasonic offers a warranty of one year on parts and 90 days on labor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Choice
[...]. Choosing a player is hard their are many choices, this is my first player and working in electronics I put in the mandatory research. I [had a predetermined amount I wanted to spend] and it must have many output options and decoders would be nice but be solid and do its job well. It has no zoom but my experience has been the more bells & whistles the easier it will break down. This is an older model but its a sleeper, [and} it was built well[...]. Rented MATRIX & put in without cleaning it and it played perfect. I chose this over Pioneer 333 & 525 & 434 & Panasonic 56 & cv51,30,31,115 & Sony 300,400 & 700 :Toshiba 4205,1600,1700,2150,220,2300,5109: Jvc 723,523,545:Samsung n501 &2000n,301 & 901 [....]

5-0 out of 5 stars Throw Out Those VHS Movies
This is my first DVD player and I must say that I am impressed.Picture and sound quality are great, the weak link here is my TV. As usual, I ignored the instruction manual and installed the unit in about 2 minutes. The connections are straightforward, and the front panel controls and the remote are very intuitive.I did finally look at the manual because the on-screen menu and graphics are a little cryptic. All said and done, I only wish I had gotten one sooner.I can't speak for other models, but the Panasonic DVD-RV65 is a great value. My only recommendation, if this is your first DVD player purchase make sure you have plenty of cash on hand; you will need it for a DVD disk buying binge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD Player
After coming from a two year old Philips Magnavox DVD Player that I found great, I decided to move up to this Panasonic model because of it's features, Panasonic's reputation for quality products, and it's price.

This machine has been superb.Pictures are just as crystal clear as the Philips, the additional play speeds are extremely useful, there is no longer any of the freeze-frame I occasionally had with the Philips, and it starts up the movie extremely quickly. The remote is extremely intuitive to use, albeit a little small. The unit itself feels extremely well built. To top all this off, the price of this player is only a few dollars more than the base DVD Player from Panasonic, making it a great deal.

This DVD Player is a great introductory DVD Player or one for someone looking to replace an aging DVD Player for not a lot of money. It's worth it. ... Read more

Panasonic SC-HT80 5-DVD Home Theater System
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $699.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Perhaps we're merely growing more cynical as time goes by, but we tendto look askance at manufacturers claiming to sell "complete" anythings thesedays. Look really closely at the fine print and you'll find that "complete"means "all but..." (fill in the blank).

So you can imagine how surprised wewere to open Panasonic's SC-HT80 "complete home theater" and discover thateverything we needed was there. All the wires, all the speakers, a subwoofer, asurround processor--even a five-disc DVD/CD player. (Panasonic does assume youhave a TV and a room to put it all in.)

Heightening both our surprise and ourpleasure, the system is also easy to assemble. Even neglecting the instructionmanual, we had the whole shebang up and running within 10 minutes. Wires areclearly marked, as are all connections. Assembly just doesn't get easier. (Andkudos to Panasonic for including a high-quality S-Video connection on the SC- HT80's processor/receiver.)

The identical front (left/right) and rear speakersare small--so small that we wondered if they would be up to their job, but theyproved impressive performers. It's possible to overload them, but with goodplacement and sensible listening levels you can get impressively large soundwithout compromising quality.

We were also happy to see that the centerchannel is a larger speaker than the others. Despite the fact that manymanufacturers still treat the center channel as an afterthought, it's still thecase that the center channel provides up to 80 percent of a film's soundtrackand about 100 percent of the dialogue, which, for obvious reasons, iscritical.

The SC-HT80's subwoofer pumps a lot of bass from an 8-inch driver, though we'd call it a woofer rather than a true subwoofer, given its 41 Hz roll- off (that's low, but still a good octave above the region of deepest bass).Still, it gives reasonable body to the sound from the other speakers. Thesubwoofer is controllable from the remote, and this helps tune it to both theroom and its position. We like the subwoofer best when placed near the listeningposition, and we don't recommend the maximum bass-boost setting, which makeseverything sound tubby.

We also appreciated the SC-HT80's flexibility. It hasaudio and video inputs for a VCR as well as a tape deck, and its built-in AM/FMtuner works well. The unit did what it was supposed to do and we found it easyto use. It's hard to complain about a product that does all that for less than$700. We give the Panasonic SC-HT80 two big thumbs up. --L.V. 1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from Panasonic!
Customer Service - the Panasonic website claims this is very important to them. I had my home theater only 3-4 months when a VCR tape got stuck. I has now been at the service center for almost 4 months! When I am lucky enough to get a response from Panasonic (which is rare), they make promises of completion and/or replacement. But promises won't play the DVD's my family would have liked to watch together over the holidays. When we finally got through to the customer service center on the phone, they had the nerve to hand up on us twice. IF YOU WANT A COMPANY TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS - STAY AWAY FROM PANASONIC!!! I have truly given up hope of even getting my home theater back from the Panasonic service center.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy
Ok, the sound was good. Until a couple of weeks ago, that is. The latest CDs I bought will not play decently. The music is interrupted every couple of minutes by sounds that make you wonder if there is a record player inside (it sure is large enough...). Panasonic are saying I can have it repaired, which will cost me at least 40 dollars. Just about the price of a low end dvd player. You know, one of those systems that will play mp3, dvd, cd, cdr and cdrw instead of only dvds, like this Panasonic thing. Based on my experience and some of the other reviews it would seem Panasonic equipment lasts about 2 years. Hmmm.

1-0 out of 5 stars SC-HT80 will NOT play new DVD and CDS
I own a Panaconic SC-HT80. For the first 2 years no problem. Paid almost $700. Now it will not read any new CD's or DVD's. You can not use a rewritten CD on the system. Renting from Blockbuster is a hit or miss if DVD's will play. My local repair person tells me there is nothing wrong with the unit. Panasonic will not offer any spport.Buyer beware!!!!!! ... Why can I notfind this camera anywhere

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Camera I Have Owned!
I purchased this particular camera July 2003.Thus far I have taken 7 rolls of film with this camera.First off I found loading the film to be the easiest I have encountered. You just drop the film in, shut the door and the film sets itself. All of the features in this camera allows the photographer to take GREAT pictures.Every picture I took, using this camera, looked as though a professional had taken them.To get familiar with all of the features I purposely took pictures that utilized each feature.Again every picture came out GREAT!Close ups of people did not have the red-eye due to the Flip Flash feature.Photos I took of objects far away seemed a lot closer due to the Infinity feature.Photos I took at night looked as though they were taken in the day light due to the Night View feature. The 3 picture sizes also produced fabulous pictures. The Preview screen, on the back of the camera, came in handy for viewing the picture right away to make sure I got the shot I was after.I also like that I can set the date, time and event to print on the photo.I love this camera so much that I am trying to find one for several members of my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I've Been Looking For!
I absolutely love this camera!I was considering a digital camera but wasn't impressed with the clarity of the pictures, and yet I really wanted to send pictures to family via e-mail.This camera gives me the best of both worlds and for a lot less money!
My husband and I have three children and I also am a licensed day care provider and I take a LOT of pictures on a weekly basis. Two of my day care parents are already considering buying this camera after seeing the pictures it takes, and how easy it is to handle.
Being able to see the picture after you take it is wonderful! If someone steps in front of you, you can tell right away and don't have to waste money getting a picture developed you know you don't want.On the other hand, the pictures that you see that you know Grandma and Grandpa are going to want a copy of, you order a few extras of just that picture!
I also do a lot of scrapbooking, and this camera is a life saver! When I have all three boys in a picture, I can get three of just that one for each of their scrap books.
I have gone through four rolls of film with this camera, and I haven't had one picture that had even a hint of red eye in it.I just can't say enough about this camera!I absolutely love it!I was crushed when my other camera "died" on me and I had to get a different one.I've gotten over it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Takes Great Photos and is Easy to Use
I am a novice scuba diver, and completely new to underwater photography, but I do have a lot of land photography experience. I bought a ReefMaster RC camera a few days before going on a recent Caribbean vacation and am very happy that I did. I took it on 3 different dives, a shallow (35') reef dive, a deeper (72') reef dive, and a deep (82') wreck dive (a WWII Soviet Warship!). The camera is very well designed and performed extremely well; even after I dropped it! (It bounced.) It's a breeze to handle underwater, with all the key stuff easily readable and accesible. It's also really easy to use; a couple of times I handed it to my fellow divers (underwater) and they took very good photos without needing to fuss with dials, etc. I shot 3 different rolls of 36 exposures of Kodak ASA 200 Gold film. My first roll (the shallow dive, my first with the camera) yielded 10 photos I put in my album. The second and third rolls (dives 2 & 3) yielded 18 and 15 photos respectively that I judged good enough to show to friends and colleagues (who were blown away by the pics). The 'rejected' photos were due to 'operator error' (as in, I was too close, or too far away, etc.). I highly recommend this camera to people who want to take high quality underwater photos without the expense and hassle of higher-end cameras. If you get the camera, be sure to also get the 3x close-up lens, which really brings out the best in your underwater subjects. And READ THE MANUAL ... I suspect that some of the folks here who complained about the camera didn't take the time to follow the instructions. Have fun!

1-0 out of 5 stars Over priced camera that leaks
Well I bought this camera a few weeks ago to go hawaii. Well it leaked after one roll of film so cleaned it out and let dry over night and loaded it again the next day and leaked again to where the camera didnt work anymore. Well I ended up getting some underwater disposable cameras. When I got the film developed the the disposable pics actually came out better than the 1 roll that came out of my $... camera (imagine that). Well now Im trying to get it repaired or replaced and I have to pay to ship it to them plus another $... I have to send to them for processing, what is up with that if I have a warrenty and its faulty equipment they should cover at the the shipping back to me. Over all There is nothing that I can recomend about this camera from the pics to the service. Would give it a 0 if possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good beginning underwater camera!
I just purchased this camera and have already used it on 6 dives and found it to work so much better than other disposable cameras and housing for scuba diving. It's not a Nikonos (sp?) but it's still pretty good for a beginner. The only thing I don't like too much is that if you're pretty close to one object but also too far away from another object in the same frame, the flash is only good for within some many feet.Anything further and you can start to see the bluish cast from taking underwater photos around the perimeter of the photo.I also purchased the 3X macrolens to go with it, but found that I had much difficulty keeping this portable lens on without actually using both hands at the same time trying to keep it on the camera while taking a photo.Otherwise a great camera! ... This compact 1,200-watt machine automatically produces espresso with the push of a button. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. A coffee tamper and measuring spoon accompany the 11-3/4-by-8-3/4-by-8-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Durability
Worked great out of the box, although the electronic controls were erratic and hard to set. Made good espresso.

However, after about 18 months, I have to throw it away and buy something else. It is gradually self-destructing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bang for the buck
I purchasd this unit for my fiance 2+ years ago for Christmas and we couldn't be more impressed.I consulted with a close friend who used to run a coffee shop, and he suggested this model, and it has never disappointed.Makes a quick and strong esspresso, has great settings to control the strength of brew, and is easy to operate. The only (small) complaint is the small space where the espresso is dispensed - there is only room for an espresso cup or something short.Makes a beautiful creamy brew.I do highly reccomend that you only use filtered or bottled water in the unit to keep it from getting build-up lime/scaling.We have only just de-scaled ours for the first timeafter 27+ months of use.The clean water makes a big difference, and a better quality brew.

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy initial setup, bad quality coffee + hard handling
When we bought the machine we were hoping for something easy to setup, but make decent coffee.

The first is true, it's not that difficult. However, you run into numerous problems pretty quickly.

    1) Attaching the coffee filter is hard.Only after a little while I figured out that you can only put so much coffee into it, that you can still attach it.
    2) Only very small cups fit.
    3) Amount of espresso made is inconsistent.Sometimes it fills the entire cup, sometimes only 1/3 of it.
    4) Espresso brew runs over, by the filter.Even after adjusting.Adjusting the filter we lost the screw, we are truly "screwed" now.Already sent mail to Brittax, haven't heard back.
    5) The extra coffee runs into the container below, needs to continuously be cleaned.
    6) Today the steaming valve started leaking, water running out of it at a constant drip while brewing espresso.

If there is/would be a way to return this machine after 2 months of usage I will. ... Read more

Any cook would happily welcome this cookware set. Four pans and a big stockpot, three of which have domed lids, cover nearly every cooking task. Every piece goes into the oven up to 450 degrees, adding vdding versatility to the set. The big stockpot alone can simmer stocks and soups, cook chili and boil pasta, stew, and braise. The saucepans can do all that, too, plus make sauces and cook vegetables. The thick-bottomed omelet pans can sear and sauté as well as cook omelets and frittatas. Calphalon's Commercial Nonstick cookware is coated with an especially durable, multilayered nonstick material. Use only plastic, nylon, and wood utensils. Heavy, domed, stainless-steel lids return moisture to food. Pans are anodized for hardness. Polished, cast-stainless-steel handles are triple-riveted for durability and balance and stay cooler on stovetops. Heavy aluminum pans cook without hot spots or warping. The set comes with a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality Cookware
This is a wonderful cookware set. These pans heat up very quickly and cook food evenly. Very easy to clean! They are nice and heavy. After the research I did before buying these (reviews I read on the internet) and now using them myself, I highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cookware, but you'll need more
This is a great starter set, with two exceptions: 1) each pot has a different sized lid so you end up with clutter and 2) why did Caphalon include a large crepe pan when what you really need is a skillet? You will need to get a shallow spatula if you make omelettes in the crepe pan. Still, it's a pleasure to cook with equipment that heats fast, cooks evenly and cleans up nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I purchased this set last year at Christmas time, and have used it constantly throughout the year. This could be the last set of cookware you may ever buy. I have seen almost no wear, the non-stick surfaces still look unused, the heat is evenly distributed, the weight of the cookware is more light than heavy, and the metal handles are well designed to stay cool to the touch. ... US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

One of Handspring's two new Visors running with the faster 33 MHzMotorola Dragonball VZ processor, the Visor Platinum offers a competitive optionto the Palm V series. Although it doesn't sport a color display like its newsibling, the Visor Prism, the Platinum offers 16 shades of gray, outputtingsharper graphics in games and applications. It also features 8 MB of memory likethe Visor Deluxe, providing plenty of room for storing contacts, notes, and e-mails.

But the Visor Platinum's selling point is its new processor, which performsfaster than other Visors or Palm handhelds (Handspring claims up to a 50 percentincrease in speed). While we didn't put a radar gun to the Platinum, itcertainly felt speedier than the Visor Deluxe--tapping on an application openedit almost instantaneously.

Using a USB cradle, our desktop synchronizations sped along nicely, usuallycompleted in just a few seconds unless we were adding applications.Additionally, since the Platinum uses the Palm OS, most third-party programswritten for Palm handhelds will work for the Platinum.

One difference between the Visor Platinum and the Palm V series that Handspringmost likely won't boast about is its size. Where the sleek Palm V series sportsa depth of only 0.4 inches, the Platinum retains the standard Visor form factorof 0.7 inches.

But when you've got the expandability that the Handspring's Springboard moduleslot offers--allowing you to add a digital camera, a cell phone, a Tiger Woodsgolf game, or an MP3 player--you don't need to quibble over slimness. Also, likeother Visors, the Platinum features a built-in microphone (though you'll need toadd a module, such as a voice recorder or the phone module, to use it).

If you're already a Palm or Handspring user, there may not be enough about thePlatinum to sway you to pick up this new product. But if you're looking for thecutting edge of handheld speed, the Platinum is ready and raring to go. --J.Curtis

    Pros:

    • Fastest Palm OS processor around

1-0 out of 5 stars Great product...until you try to have it repaired
My Handspring was a trusted resource for the first 9 1/2 months I had it. Last week, it suddenly stopped working. I went to Handspring's site and filled out the return form only to be told it was out of warranty, which wasn't true; I have 2.5 months left on my warranty. I called Customer Service and was told of my options: Call Tech Support with my claim, which charges a flat fee of $20; have it repaired "out of warranty," for $100; or, as Handspring's website suggests,
"Sometimes the cost of repairing an older device is almost as much as purchasing a new one. We welcome you to explore your options: maybe it makes more sense to simply buy a new device of the same type, or even treat yourself to the latest & greatest..."

Thanks, Handspring, I've explored my options--and I'm switching to Sony.

4-0 out of 5 stars The platinum is GOLD
I bought this after much hesitation that I would "never need a PDA." Well, with the included software, sync-cradle and it's onboard memory, I couldn't live without it.From addresses to 3rd party software, it's my constant companion.
By sync-ing it with my work PC, I have all my emails, spreadsheets,[microsoft and word]documents in one convenient place.
I am also sold on AvantGo, a online site that downloads at sync all the things you ask it to: weather, sports, financials, etc.
Batteries are a [reasonabley priced] but it must know that because it uses them fairly frequently- but not like my GPS.It warns you, but listen to the warning- if you wait too long, your data's gone....until the next sync.
Very efficient on memory but you can always buy more-never had to.
Recommend if you want a black and white, no-frills, fast and convenient PDA that you can customize until the cows come home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful device except for...
...occasionally bits of memory mysteriously disappears. For example, of my daily mileage tabs for the past six months, November's mileage records have inexplicably vanished, though this month's (December 02) mileage records are intact. This happened to me a while back with September's mileage records, but they inexplicably reappeared a few weeks later!I'm hoping the same will happen to the missing November records...

This is my first PDA, so have no idea if this is just a fact of life with all PDAs or what.

Other than that this PDA is more than enough for my needs, no need to blow $300-500 for some fancy schmancy full-color 400 MHz (same as an old Pentium II desktop!) HP or Sony running Pocket Windows, which is actually not as easy to use as Palm OS. ... Read more

The VT 1511 wireless headset is a revolution in cordless telephones. Unlike most other digital 900 MHz cordless phones, the VT 1511 is a completely wireless headset telephone--and one with a very unique space-age design. When using the headset, you have complete freedom of movement. There are no cords or cables to worry about, so your hands will be free to keep working.

In addition to the headset, the VT 1511 comes with a corded desk set with a keypad, from which you can access the 20-number speed dial and intercom feature between base unit and headset. It also comes with an infrared remote-control dial card, which you can use to dial numbers when away from the base unit.

The VT 1511 digitizes your voice using advanced ADPCM digital voice encoding to provide noise- and distortion-free performance. In most conditions, you will not be able to tell you are using a cordless phone. The VT 1511 informs you when another extension is currently in use on the same phone line. It also has an out-of-range alert, even when you're not on the phone. Other features include tone/pulse dialing, 10-channel operation with auto channel selection, spare battery charger in base unit, and a hearing aid compatible receiver.

The VT 1511 uses special memory that is not susceptible to power failures. This provides permanent storage of all memory dial numbers and security codes. With an optional battery pack installed in the base unit, the VT 1511 can provide full operational backup in case of power failure. Calls can still be placed and received on the headset without interruption. With a fully charged battery pack in the base unit, you'll have up to five hours of backup usage time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD !
First I must say that I can't understand why they stopped making this phone. This is such a unique product.I am dismayed that it has been discontinued.

I bought my first one on Ebay after having great hearing difficulties. My medical problem actually (at times) distorts sounds on a regular telephone handset... to the point where all I can hear is a vibration but not able to distinguish what the caller is saying.

That medical condition is what prompted me to search for some kind of phone that had dual earpieces and wouldn't distort the voices on the other end.

I took my chances and purchased the Vtech 1511.It actually has been a LIFESAVER for me because I NEED to be able to talk on the phone quite a bit during the course of running my home-based business.

    I LOVE THIS PHONE.

When mine broke / wore out I called Vtech to find out about servicing it and I was told they no longer did since it had been discontinued. I was FRANTIC.

I found another on Ebay and purchased it and was off an running.

Recently I came across one on Ebay and bought it just to put it in the cupboard for when and if I need this phone again someday.

I think I could not live without this product... and I RARELY say that about anything.

It is crystal clear... gives you total freedom... and the fact that the ear pieces don't actually sit "on" your ears was just exactly the type of hearing device I needed.

Like I said.... the BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!

5-0 out of 5 stars These things are great
I really like my Vtech 1511s.However, they are apparently discontinued by the manufacturer. [...]

It's true that they are a weird configuration where all of the stuff sits on your head, but I think it's more than worth it to not have wires everywhere.Reception is good, for me it worked flawlessly to about 50 feet through interior & exterior walls.

The boom mike can break off if flexed by pulling on it repeatedly. That's a problem. But otherwise, this is some very good engineering from what I see as a usually [...] vendor (vtech).[...], but in the case of the 1511 it's really a [nice] unit.

The charger for the headset is inductively coupled; no metal contacts to corrode.VERY COOL!

The small box hides the fact that in addition to the headset, charging stand, and dial pad, you get a full-on desk unit with intelligently done speed dials (unfortunately not in true executive phone style [extra buttons] but intuitively programmable). It's missing a speakerphone, however.

I worked out of a home office for a year doing a lot of phone consultation and sales, and this thing was great.Unfortunately, one of the units' mikes has broken (due to flexion) and now I don't know whether I should scrounge used units or what.I hope they come out with a very slightly refined version of this great product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great at first but thin plastic
There is a real fine thin piece of plastic that attaches the side with the microphone. It easily broke after a couple months of use, which made the headset totaly useless. Yet another headset tossed in the garbage. ... Read more

    JVC FS-SD5 Executive Microsystem

    Editorial Review

Elegant. That's the best way to describe JVC's FS-SD5 ExecutiveMicrosystem. The brushed-aluminum main unit houses a 1-bit CD player, FM/AMradio with 45 presets, and a 19-watts-per-channel amplifier that drives a pairof seriously good little speakers--and that's just the basics.

Power up theFS-SD5 and its striking glass top plate slides back to unveil controls forvolume, source, CD, preset tuning, clock/timer, and JVC's Active Hyper Bass PROcircuit (bass boost, essentially). Press CD, and the top plate performs yetanother contortion, raising itself on motorized hinges to reveal the CD itself. When a disc is set in place, the drawer returns to the closed position andplayback begins.

The FS-SD5 sounds as elegant as it looks. Although eachported speaker enclosure contains just a single 3.2-inch full-range driver (madeof dense olefin fiber), they produce a clear midrange, with particularly strongvocal and instrumental reproduction. The bass is surprisingly full for suchsmall speakers, especially once Active Hyper Bass PRO has been engaged. Thehigh-frequency response is good, but not quite as airy as we hear with speakersthat have separate tweeters. Overall this system delivers a clean, warm soundthat can easily fill a small- to medium-sized listening space.

Othernoteworthy features include an optical digital output (for direct digitalrecording to minidisc or CD), stereo minijack input and output (for looping inan external source), electronic bass and treble controls, a dimmable florescentdisplay, and a subwoofer output that lets you hook up a powered subwoofer tobeef up the low end.

With a combination of great looks and fine sound, JVC'ssleek little FS-SD5 not only electrifies any room, it also outclasses most ofthe competition. --Wayne Garcia

2-0 out of 5 stars Novelty Wears Off
This player is very sleek, modern, and entertaining to watch with its cool blue light and sliding glass door. The sound quality is also impressive. One reviewer mentioned that his cat enjoyed it--and after a while I found it was not good for much more than amusing pets.As someone else said, it made perfectly good CD's skip, that did not skip on any other player. If you take a look into the player, you'll see the CD wobbling from side to side as it spins--not good news.If you listen carefully, you'll notice that each song skips at the same part(s) every time you pop in the disc. That's because the bright, shiny, machine has scratched your CD.
    My advice:
Don't buy this because you won't be able to enjoy your CD's on it, or ever again, as it will damage them.
If you own it, lock up your CD's until you get this deceptively cute music-eating monster out of your house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for anybody
With the styling, size and quality you can place this system anywhere in your house or office and it will do all that you need it to.I put it in my living room and hooked it up to my tv and get a perfect sound booster for when I watch my movies. It is always a converstaion piece for the blue backlighting and moving glass top.Beware, it looks small but it packs a serious punch!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but I wouldn't buy it again
Bought this product almost 2 years ago. It's a very stylish system with good sound quality at low to medium volumes. The sound quality suffers noticably at high volumes.I also have a problem with a lot of CD's skipping on this system that don't skip when played anywhere else.I've noticed that any CD played in this system will start to skip after a month or so of regular use. ...
