Editorial Review

Don't confine the pleasure of pressed coffee to home. With this combination of coffee press and vacuum-insulated thermos, European-style coffee turns up at the office or campground and stays hot three times longer than coffee made in a glass press. Simply spoon in ground coffee, add boiling water, place the lid on with plunger in the up position, wait four minutes, push down the plunger slowly, and . . . Presto! Fresh, piping-hot coffee for two or three hours. Lightweight and virtually unbreakable, the press has a handsome, satin-finish exterior and tough, nonslip, black plastic top and bottom. The press parts and smooth interior clean with sponge or cloth. --Fred Brack ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not superlative, but thermally insulated is the way to go
Short answer: Pretty good, nor perfect, but recommended.

Screen does not appear (to my amateur eyes) to fit the walls as smoothly as a bodum glass model I saw, i.e. there are small indentations in my screen that may or may not merely be cosmetic, but then again mine arrived dented as was probably abused be a previous jerk who returned it (and then they re-sent it out to me -- why, I dunno.) Anyway, it doesn't seem to affect the coffee, but I'm a novice (as if it matters).

I think an uninsulated one would be a real pain. This keeps it hot for a 30 minutes to a few hours (with the time varying mainly on how much coffee you leave in it). A glass one would lose heat rapidly by comparison so if you drink a pot over an hour or so like me you'll really want this or bodum's similar offering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Replacement French press screen
I have this pot for years and Bodum makes replacement screens that will fit this pot.Shame that they make the screen for their product as well as Nissan and they clearly state that it will fit the Nissan...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great press; but no more screens
We have had this press for over a year and use it almost every day. It keeps the coffee hot long enough (we drink it before it has a chance to get cold anyway!), plus it just makes excellent tasting coffee. We do take issue with the manufacturer, however, as I just called them (11/3/03) and they said they no longer make the replacement screens--and that they are the only ones who made them.Yet they will replace the whole pot if you need a new screen.Does this make any sense? ... Pocket Magnadoodle

Toy

Editorial Review

The Pocket Magna Doodle is a miniaturized classic, and it worksjust like its big brother. Kids can draw, then erase, then endlesslydraw again. Measuring just 6 by 4.5 inches, it fits in a shirt pocket, and it's as convenient and useful as any PDA--a must for thefrequent-traveler tot. The metal-tipped stylus attaches to the frame by ashort red cord and clips to the side when not in use. Although moderatelysturdy, this Magna Doodle is unlikely to survive being sat on.--Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DISTRACTION!
I don't know why other people have a problem with the durability, I think its great. My daughter just turned 2 and is very eager to write on it. We bring it in the car, out to restaurants, she uses it all the time. Its wonderful because she can erase the screen and start over whenever she wants too. Wonderful. And its held up for us just great.. ESPECIALLY for the price!! VERY REASONABLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY FUN! A must have!
This toy is a must have in my book.

I look for toys that are fairly quiet, easy and fun. I expect them to grow with my child. I like them to be versatile as well. If they are educational then that is a bonus.

I have a larger version of this toy and this smaller version. We keep one in my diaper bag so that my son can play with it while we're traveling, waiting for dinner, etc. He loves this toy.

It can be as educational as you want. He draws pictures on it and tells me what they are. Sometimes I draw shapes or letters or numbers on it and make him tell me what they are.

The lever at the bottom that erases the board is easy to work. I like that the pen is attached to the toy so that you don't lose the magnet 'pen'.

This has survived a lot of play and has even been stepped on. While I don't suggest that this is the way to treata toy, this toy has stood up well.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it
Fine for kids, but adults can have fun with it too.I put mine on the wall, and whenever I need to write myself a little reminder note, it's easy and I don't have to waste paper.I can also draw little pictures or write notes of inspiration or . . . whatever I want! :) ... Read more

Singing Kermit
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Toy

Editorial Review

"Hi-ho, Kermit the frog here." Everyone's favorite amphibian is rendered perfectly in plush inthis Magic Talking version. Squeeze his belly and he greets you. Press again and he'll invite you to sing"Caribbean Amphibian" along with him. (You have to keep squeezing his belly for each phrase of thesong.) If you don't like to work for your music, simply squeeze Kermit's left foot and he'll go through thewhole routine without stopping. Those who prefer a true Kermit-style performance may be more amusedby his humming (hold his mouth closed), his truly froggy greeting (press his left hand for a"Ribbit!"), orhis fly-catching abilities (squeeze his right hand for the sound of a fly). "Mmmm. Delicious."He measures20 inches from webbed toe to the crown of his pointy head, and his posable body is made of soft, fuzzyspring-green fabric. The bottom of his right foot bears the embroidered signature of creator Jim Henson.Magic Talking Kermit requires three AA batteries (included); you'll need a Phillips head screwdriver toopen the battery compartment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kermit The Frog
I think the Kermit toy is really cute and funny.Even though I'm an older girl i still love Kermit The Frog!My sister in law who is 20 also loves Kermit so it must be a good thing.I love the picture of him when he is a baby in the sand. It's sooooooo cute.It must have taken you a long time to think up the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatToy!
Whoever designed this Kermit the Frog is so clever! It is constructed very well and is very cool.My one year old niece absolutely loves it (as does her parents).Squeeze on his left hand and he makes a buzzing fly noise, squeeze his belly and it sounds as if he has eaten it. Squeeze on his foot and he sings Carribean Amphibian. What is really funny about it is, if you hold his mouth together he will hum the song.It is a very cute toy, and your toddler will love it! Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dear Puzzled . . .
I wanted to mention that as a twenty-something young woman who grew up on the Muppets, I find this toy to be insatiably amusing. It brings my friends and me much laughter, without getting old.Incidentally, thecatching sound occurs when you first squeeze his hand for the fly sound andthen squeeze his belly in order to open his mouth for "thecatch."Have fun! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Investment
This is a great book that really delivers what it promises.Easy, great tasting recipes. Two of my favorites are the roasted cabbage with peanut sauce and the bean salad with citrus vinagrette. It includes many, simple ways to spice up rice dishes (if you have a ton of spices on hand already -- or force yourself to invest in them). However, I didn't give it five stars because like most recipe books, it has some ingredients that I've never heard of....but that's my own subjectiveness/food ignorance speaking. You might have the stuff already. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Time for a Book Rebirth
This book was written in 1999, during the go-go years of the late 1990s when people were jumping from job to job like there was no tomorrow. There were plenty of employment opportunities-locally and across the country and the world. With such abundance, a lot of people were just jumping without investing sufficient time and thought into the decisions they were making.

Then the economy tanked, taking a lot of hopeful careers down with it. Hark! The economy is coming back! Things are picking up again and workers will have an increasing number of job options open to them. As we shift back toward a sellers' market, workers in all fields will again have decisions to make. The search for new opportunities is kicking into gear and thousands of people will be looking for exciting jobs...which may not be right around the corner.

This book will take you step-by-step through a process that has baffled many job-seekers over the years. Nope, it's not one of those academic treatises full of theoretical stuff. You'll have a workbook in your hands-one that will put ideas in your head, questions in front of your face, and pages to write things down. "Greener Pastures" is very specifically for people who are looking for a job in another location; they want to move to another city, another state, for whatever reason(s).

In the initial chapter, Andrea Kay, a specialist in job seeking, will challenge why you want to consider a move in the first place. Be ready to be forced into some research-internal and external. Then, in the subsequent chapters, you'll find questions, information, suggestions, and techniques to streamline your process. Your mind will be opened by this book, which will also help you fill it back up again with the information you need to find that distant job the right way. Result: you'll go after your next position with a significantly higher level of confidence which will support greater achievement.

Bonus: You'll find some good resources in the back of the book, right before the comprehensive index. "Greener Pastures" is a usable tool.

Note: While this book is based on an out-of-town focus, there is plenty of value for the job-seeker who does not necessarily want to move to another city. The process may reaffirm your desire to grow where you are planted. "Greener Pastures" is a book whose time has come...again.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found the job of my dreams because of this book.
I've always wanted to leave home in the midwest and move to the east coast but was afraid to just pack-up and take-off.This book gave me the attitude, confidence, tools and knowledge to explore my dream withoutleaving home.I was shocked to discover I could not only find a job on theeast coast - I found my dream job and will be working 2 blocks away fromthe beach doing something I've always wanted to do and making a lot moremoney than I thought I could make.Thank you Andrea Kay!This book isinsightful, well-written and took me step-by-step through the process. It's the best 12 bucks I've ever spent in my life. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but a hard read
This is one of the first complete books I have read on Zen Buddhism.I was hoping for a more general introduction, but alas this book really gave it to you.If you are not an out of the box thinker or do not understand Zen at all, then this book is probably not for you.The books ripples your mind with the philosophy of Zen and how it can impact your life.I found it to be quite intereseting and definitely one of the hardest books I have ever read.I believe it would deserve 5 stars, but my lackluster understanding of Zen only allows me to give it 4 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Much ado about Nothing
As an introduction Zen, what has been presented in this book is fine though it could have been done with lot less elitist overtone. I agree Zen and its true comprehension does not come easy (I am talking of regular mortals such as myself here) and words as mere symbols for concepts are distorting when conveying Zen.

I do not propose that I am an expert on Zen or even Buddhism in general but I have read a few books on Buddhism by Thich Nhat Hanh, Dalai Lama, Chogyam Trungpa and others. Though an agnostic who does not care for much for organized religion, I do believe the most fundamental benefit of any spiritual/ religious framework is to instill a sense of compassion toward other beings. You need some kind of cultural creation (religious or otherwise) to counter act the natural tendency of a human to be self-serving. In this aspect, I have high regards for non-theistic Buddhism and the inclusiveness of Vedanta (Hinduism) that proposes all religions eventually lead to the same attainment. From this viewpoint I was surprised with this author.

This author may have been one of the leading authorities on Zen in his time, but unfortunately he comes as an arrogant, elitist, full of prejudices. He does not miss any opportunity to put down other religions or even other sects of Buddhism. Only Zen as practiced by the Rinzai sect is pure, strong and generally worthy of pursuit. Any form of spiritualism from the West is of course hopeless since the western mind cannot escape the conditioning of logical thinking.Any spiritualism from India is complex, ceremonial and not practical. Other sects of Buddhism generally do not have true comprehension, lost their way focusing on non-essentials etc. He reserves his most disparaging remarks for Indian religions and monks (and does his best to show that though Buddhism originated in India, it is really the Chinese and Japanese due to their practical nature made something of it).

Is this just the standard fundamentalism/ misplaced racism?

I will definitely read other books on Zen and go beyond this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars authoritative and concise
I don't know very much about Zen, but I can say that this book was very informative for the beginner. In the introduction, Jung characterizes Zen as the path to a new condition of consciousness wherein the conscious mind is allowed to rest so that elements from the unconscious mind can be brought to the surface. What rises out of the unconscious is dependent on what is needed to complete the conscious orientation. This characterization is very fascinating, though I think that Jung, being a psychologist/psychiatrist, naturally has a somewhat constructivist bias for the anti-metaphysical structure of Zen over other religious systems.

DT Suzuki himself presents the material with authority and concision.I've not read his "essays" but this work is much shorter, and would serve as preliminary reading.Topics include defining Zen (or rather, saying what it is not), the koan, satori, the monk's life, and the ralationship between Zen and logic (or rather, illogic). ...
