    Editorial Review

You'll develop a huge crush just on the look of the Krups Chrome Compact Toaster, but you'll really fall in love with its performance. Two extra-wide slots have automatic bread guides to hug store-bought and home-baked breads, bagels, and pastries. Adjust the setting (the quartz heating elements provide even browning) and forget worrying about underdone or burnt breads--in case you want to check, there's a cancel button. The compact cousin of the original Krups Chrome Toaster, the compact model measures just 10 inches along the base to save space. Any extra cord length can be wrapped underneath the tapered body. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sexy, but some issues...
This toaster is aesthetically very pleasing to the eye, makes good toast from a variety of different breads, bagles, crumpets and the like. Toasting is fairly even, and the toast remains quite moist which is good. So overall I was pretty happy... until... the underside of the toaster started going rusty, the lip where the chrome folds under. This started happening soon after I bought the toaster, and thought it was just surface rust from moisture in the kitchen, but it looks a bit more serious, probably going to see what Krups say about this. I was replacing my Morphy Richards 1950's toaster with a mordern equivelant, but it doesnt look like it will stay in top condition for 5 years, let alone 50?

5-0 out of 5 stars I Like My Krups Toaster.
I'm not sure why everyone is getting all upset at Krups, I received three of their products when I headed off to college this fall and I really like them, especially this toaster which has always functioned perfectly and is the only nice looking thing in my apartment. Also, to the previous reviewer who retrieved an english muffin out of his or her toaster with a fork, this is a really bad idea, try using something that won't conduct electricity next time.

Drop a dime into the jukebox, press F2 for Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill," and dreamily drift back to the '50s, when bobbysoxers and guys with ducktails or wearing white bucks (never, ever both) idled away after-school hours at the local drugstore's soda fountain sipping chocolate malts that had been churned to a smooth, frothy consistency by a mixer exactly like this one. Hamilton Beach's drink mixers began appearing at soda fountains in 1911; this 14-1/2-inch-high, 70-watt model, in creamy green, recalls Elvis's first decade. But it's 21st-century, too, blending fruit smoothies and health drinks as well as milk shakes and malted milks. Also use it to mix puddings and beat eggs for omelets. Two speeds offer mixing flexibility, and the tilting head makes it easy to remove the spindle for cleaning. Its professional-style, stainless-steel cup holds 28 ounces and is dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hamilton Beach - Shame on you!
The Hamilton Beach 730C Classic DrinkMaster is a complete waste of money! It is not sturdy or powerful enough to make a milkshake - at least one that actually contains ice cream! It doesn't mix anything! What a waste!By the Oster instead or go to a garage sale and get the real thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak motor - burned out
In less than one month of light use, this item self-destructed.Weak motor, that burned out only trying to mix icecream drinks.Save your money.Buy the Braun handheld instead!!!Strong motor, and much more versatile too.

    Editorial Review

Start your morning off right with a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It's got more vitamin C than processed juice, and it just tastes better. The Mighty OJ citrus juicer in retro 1950s chrome puts 800 pounds of pressure to use making sweeter juice than electric juicers. Put your glass under the juicer, place half an orange on the raised cone, hold the juicer foot for leverage, and press the handle down. Just remember that it takes quite a few oranges to get a substantial amount of juice, so buy a bag. You can also use it to squeeze lemons, limes, and grapefruit. To clean the cone and funnel parts, lift them out of the juicer and rinse under the faucet. Lifetime warranty on moving parts. --Doree Armstrong ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cone and funnel require TLC
The cone and funnel parts are made of aluminum and will eventually discolor.I shouldn't have put them in the dishwasher, I know, but they turned black and began turning my lime juice gray.I pitched the whole machine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review of Metrokane Mighty OJ Manual Juice Squeezer
Although I ordered the juicer in the color black, I received the product in white. If not for the color I would have purchased it locally. After approximately 6 months of satisfactory occasional use the juicer is no longer functional. Some of the teeth on the gear that is connected to the press lever have broken off.I had expected a product this simple would have lasted for years.I am obviously totally disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Broke after 5 months
First, this product did succeed in producing awesome tasting orange juice and made us lifelong converts to fresh-squeezed juice.

But, it's sized so only small oranges are efficiently juiced.Larger ones cause the juicer cup to overflow, and a rim around the edge goes unsqueezed (wasted).

Finally, despite the "800 pounds of pressure" claim, our gear mechanism broke after, say 200 oranges were squeezed. It's ironic, because the rest of the machine is bomb-proof heavy metal, but the gear wheel is some cheap-o alloy that split in half!

We just purchased an OrangeX Express and hope for better luck. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This retro ice crusher with a chrome-on-metal top says cool in a 1950s kind of way. Patterned after the original Metrokane ice crushers, this attractive unit creates the right size of ice for shaken martinis, perfect margaritas, and frozen daiquiris. The ice is great for soft drinks, too. Use the ice as a bed for fresh vegetables, as well as for shrimp, crab, and lobster cocktails. Simply pop the ice in the top, close the lid, and hold it with one hand so your fingers stay clear of the handle. With your other hand, crank the handle clockwise and the ice is quickly crushed into fine bits. Turn it counter-clockwise for coarse pieces. There's no need to remember which direction to go, because the directions are embossed on the inside of the flip-top lid. The chromed base holds a quart of crushed ice. It comes with a lifetime warranty on the moving parts. --Dale Steinke ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK Product, Lousy Support from Company
I purchased this product, and used it successfully to make large crushed ice. When I followed the instructions for fine ice, turning the crank counter clockwise, the nut holding the crank came loose, and the crusher assembly fell apart. I believe this was due to poor design or improper assembly.

I wrote to the company on April 3, 2004 to request warranty assistance. I received no reply, and wrote again on June 3.

Again I received no reply, so I filed a complaint with the New York State Consumer Protection Board on July 31.

This ultimately resulted in my receiving a call from the company, sending the unit to them at my expense, and receiving a replacement unit a month or so later.

The company told NYSCPB that they had no record of my first letters, although they went to the same address to which I sent the unit, and did not come back in the mail.

I believe the company simply ignores complaints unless they are pressured from a higher authority.

The product does its job fine if you only turn clockwise; if you decide to try counter clockwise, tighten the nut frequently. There is not much difference between "fine" and "coarse."

3-0 out of 5 stars Crusher blades fell out easily
This crusher does the job better than a hammer and a tea towel. But the ice cup is chrome colored plastic so it's fragile.

After 10 uses the blades fell out of the crusher.Even with a set of jewlery making pliers we can't get the parts back together again.

Awfully expensive for the amount of use we got out of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Does Its Job
I bought this because my refrigerator doesn't have an automatic ice crusher. My only suggestion is put it on a towel so it doesn't slide around when you're grinding.Other than that mine's worked great - I haven't yet experienced the 'falling apart' problem that others have.If you want to crush ice this gizmo has worked just fine for me - it's not perfect but I wasn't expecting perfection. It's a functional device that does its job. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Good - until it breaks and Cuisinart won't answer the phone
We were pretty happy with this unit, but it mysteriously stopped working after less than a year. I took it out of the cabinet and plugged it in and nothing happened.

So I call the Cuisinart Customer Service # listed in the manual: 800-726-0190:
Try #1: I press 1 as directed and am immediately disconnected.
    Try #2: Busy signal
    Try #3: Repeat of #1
    Try #4: Repeat of #1
Try #5: I *DON'T* press 1, and it sounds like I am being transferred to a human as I am disconnected.
    Try #6: Repeat of #5
Try #7: I press 1 and (joy!) finally hear a "your call is important to us" recording, which repeats periodically. After 3 minutes I am told that they suggest I call back later or press 1 to leave a message, otherwise I can keep holding. I keep holding, the suggestion is repeated, and I am disconnected without warning.

I don't know how you make something as simple as a waffle iron stop working so quickly. We never dropped it, ran it through the dishwasher, or otherwise abused it. I'm an engineer and I dismantled it to try to find any obvious blown fuse or loose connector, but no luck. It just quietly died in the cabinet.

But I'm really amazed that a company the size of Cuisinart can simply be unable/unwilling to have a working customer service department. But even if they would pick up the *%$@#ing phone, the manual says that they charge you TEN DOLLARS in S&H for in-warranty replacement.

I'm going to throw out my waffle iron and the 2+ years left on its warranty and buy a replacement from ANY OTHER company. This was simply inexcusable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and crispy, please!
I just love this waffle iron. It's quick, it's easy, and it does a great job.Much faster than my old waffle iron, and easy to adjust and monitor, I am very happy to have ordered it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect every time!

KitchenAid KSM110PS Custom 300-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, Black Chrome
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Kitchen
    list price: $349.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 300 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

5-0 out of 5 stars TEN stars !!
People who do not like or who do not cook and bake probably cannot fathom why anyone would pay so much for a mixer. Well, the reason is simple. Reliability, power, adaptability and the fact one machine can do so much.

I ditched the bread machine someone gave me and stick with the KitchenAid with the dough hook, and I can make 2 loaves of bread in 20 minutes and then allow them to rise and then bake.

The grater attachments allow me to interchange blades so that I can make shredded carrots for carrot cake, then sliced onions for a pasta sauce. the KitchenAid whisk beaters make better egg whites and whipped items than any machine I have ever used or owned. The basic beater handles batters and cake mixes better than any other brand.

I know of no excellent cook that doesn't own a KitchenAid mixer.

This mixer is an animal. My family has owned one for almost 20 years and it has yet to break down. With the available attachments it can do almostanything that a food processor can do, except chop herbs or puree things. Whip up custom coffee specialty drinks in your own kitchen, with just the right amount of foam on your double tall latte, with this sturdy Italian-made espresso machine. It has an all-steel construction under heavy chrome plating, making it as sturdy and shiny as the bumpers of a '55 Buick. The machine is 12 by 7 inches in size (with the handle lowered) and comes with a tamper, screen, screen holder, measuring ladle, and cappuccino attachment, as well as complete operating instructions and a ten-minute video.

The machine's sleek, retro look sports shiny surfaces, a thick base with curved edges, and a pull-down coffee compressor. It's attractive enough to leave out on the counter (and really too heavy to move around frequently), and once you get used to inexpensive lattes at home, you'll want it handy for everyday use. --Marcie Bovetz

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Machine, But with many faults.
beautiful machine. But I cannot give it any higher score. It is very nice to use and you can make great tasting espresso with it (with a lot of practice and experimentation) , but it is far from an excellent machine. Here are the faults in my opinion:
1- Machine is not heavy enough. (this is a big problem as you will see with many of the points the follow).
2- securing the coffee into the machine requires some strength which is a problem because of (1) --> the machine will not stay still it will move around.
3- The lever pulling and pushing is needs strength --> this is a problem because of (1) again.
3- the Milk frother is too close to the machine (if you are not careful you will burn yourself a couple of times as I did) Also this makes the frothing process much harder.
4- I do not think that the machine keeps enough pressure to get a froth (not even for one cup) for a latte
5- The reservoir is somewhat small (minor problem)
6- because of (3) the milk will make a mess when frothing.
7- Instructions are vague in some areas such as how you are suppose to be using the double shot espresso.
8- The automatic milk frather attachment worked all right for couple of times, but started to decline in performance. (this could be my fault, but I did not experiment with it enough to tell)

I am returning my unit and will be trying the Francis Francis (they were both the same price where I bought this machine from) and I will post a review there about my next machine.

I hope this can help some of you out there shopping for an espresso machine.

This machine was recommended to me by a good Italian Friend of mine, and he is very picky about his espresso, so this machine must be able to make really good espresso if one did not mind all it's faults and had the time to perfect their espresso making wit it.

    Layth

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but impractical
The La Pavoni has become an industrial design icon, and, in some circles more concerned about prettiness than practicality, the must-have espresso maker.

Unfortunately, looking good is the only thing it does well. You can get reasonably good espresso out of this machine, but only after weeks of tinkering and experimenting, and it is just extremely inconvenient to use.

Here are the problems I have collected from two separate friends (one who owns one, and another who used to and swore never to get near one again!)

    1) somewhat fragile
    2) no thermostat, machine could explode if relief valve jams (my friend's did!)
    3) machine requires close monitoring (see item 2)
    4) after using up water in (small) tank, machine must be left to cool down before reuse
    5) messy
    6) limited supply of steam for cappucinos (see item 2)
    7) difficult to gauge the right amount of coffee: not enough and you can't achieve sufficient pressure, too much and you can't lock in the filter holder
    8) difficult to learn how to "pump" properly
    9) even on its best day, can't achieve the results of a decent pump-driven machine that costs less than half its price.

If you plan on using the machine but absolutely have to have an exotic-looking, conversation piece machine, you may want to look at the Francis Francis machine. It's in the same price range, but at least it's pump-driven.

If you care more about the taste of the coffee and the practicality of the machine, you should definitely consider the Saeco Vienna. It's 30% cheaper than the La Pavoni, makes better coffee, and has push-button convenience. It's also extremely reliable, and perfect for when you entertain (anybody can use it)

That leaves the La Pavoni for people who want a great looking conversation piece on their countertop but don't plan on using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravissimo!
This is a Ferrari of espresso machines. In addition to being a work of art (it's at MOMA in the permanent collection), La Povoni makes great espresso, period. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nice but I wish I had bought a different one
I bought this based upon the reviews that said it didn't leak. They are wrong. I have used it three times and it leaks when you shake it. If I had bought it at Target, it would be returned. Kohls has one with a gasket. I would buy that one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stylish but Lacking in Functionality
I got this thing out of the box and was really impressed with it's looks but the fun stopped there. While I was checking my nice little chrome shaker out I tilted it to the side and the top proceeded to fall off.Worried, I put some ice and a bit of simulated gin (H20) inside, gave it a few shakes and it leaked everywhere.Good thing this wasnt real gin! I dont know if this is just mine but I wasnt impressed with the the functionality.Going with Oneida.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant in its Simplicity
This shaker will bring out the dashing martini or margarita drinker in just about anyone.Looking to impress chicks with your suave mastery of the bar - this will do the trick. Looks great, chills drinks, and of course goes well with cool glassware (invest in Martini glasses or margarita glasses). You don't have to worry about spillage and the built in strainer makes any drink easy. Now if I just had a cool tray to put all of this stuff on. Seriously though, it's a great addition and will make you more likely to tinker with what's in your bar, as opposed to reaching for yet another beer. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Most of us don't think too much about garbage. Fortunately for those of us who prefer to think of our food in a more edible state, the makers of this well-constructed can gave a lot of thought to easy, sanitary trash disposal. I sometimes turn to a covered trashcan with raw chicken or another food substance on my hands and realized that if I open it, I'll contaminate the lid. But this garbage can offers a solution to this vicious circle of disinfecting: the lid flips with a simple step mechanism so your hands never touch the can. And the can is covered securely, to lock in any offensive odors. Also, if you're the unfortunate soul that always gets stuck with garbage duty, you'll be glad to see there's a removable inner lining and a sturdy handle for portability. Finally, if your Michael-Jordan-sinks-the-apple-core impression still needs work, the exterior wipes clean easily. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't believe amazon's shipping estimate for this item
i have no complaints about the product; i know they're quality because i used to sell them for a living. the problem is that i ordered my can at the beginning of march 05, and while i was advised that it would ship in 1-2 weeks, it's nearly may and still hasn't shipped. every time it would reach the shipping date, i'd get a note from amazon asking me to approve a delay. at the rate they're going, i don't expect to receive this product in this lifetime.

so unless you have several months to wait around for a garbage can, i'd recommend either finding this one locally or ordering something else from amazon. ... Read more
