Editorial Review

Washing and drying leafy vegetables has never been simpler or more fun than with this gadget. One hand is all you need to press the soft, cushioned knob to start the spinning; when the built-in brake is applied and the job is done, the basket and bowl can be taken apart and used separately. The knob locks down for easy storage, and the spinner is dishwasher-safe. Use this tool with lettuce, raw spinach, broad-leafed herbs, and greens--they end up clean and oh-so-dry, and the drier your leaves, the better salad dressings will adhere and the less mushy your sandwich bread will become. Puddles at the bottom of your salad bowl disappear... Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay...
I'm still looking for the perfect salad spinner. I had this one and broke it after trying to take the lid apart to try to clean under the lid--don't attempt that! I didn't like how this one had a domed lid so you couldn't stack stuff on top of it. I also found that the interior of the basket wasnt smooth but a bumpy basket weave so little bits of lettuce get stuck in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great until it broke
This was a wonderful salad spinner for the several months it worked. Then it broke. In my kitchen, very few things break. The occasional wooden spatula after fifteen years of use is fine but things tend not to break unless I drop them. This is my second Oxo product that broke while I was using it (the other one was a knife--yes, a knife snapped in two while I was cutting).I still love my Oxo peeler but with two out of three of my Oxo products breaking, I'm done with Oxo for the most part.

1-0 out of 5 stars worked well until it exploded
I bought this item and used it for about 2 months, then It exploded while I was spinning a salad and was impossible to repair. I went on to buy a Tupperware salad spinner (green) and have been using it for four years with no problems at all. ... Read more

Hoffritz Aluminum Garlic Press
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $19.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

If your recipe calls for crushed garlic and you dislike handling garlic barehanded, this garlic press will enable you to process "the stinking rose" easily and efficiently. To use, simply place one large clove or several smaller cloves--peeled or unpeeled--in the teardrop-shaped basket and squeeze the handles together. The specialized cleaning tool snaps into the inside of one handle, making it easy to keep track of, and the whole tool can then be tossed into the dishwasher.

The distinctive modern styling of the Platinum Series line allows you to coordinate your kitchen accessories, and a large hanging loop allows easy storage. --Jennifer Harris ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars WORKS GREAT, BUT...
I love this garlic press! It presses garlic like nobodies business and the price is right too. I gave it 4 stars instead 5 because of it can wear out and brake quickly, especially if you use it a lot. But for it's reliability, I recommend that youbuy a few of them to keep on hand, just in case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but....
While I'm generally happy with the Hoffritz, I do want to report two problems that I've encountered with it.

The third or fourth time I washed it in my dishwasher, the steel pin that goes through the hinge and holds the whole thing together fell out!Luckily, the pin was not inhaled into the dishwasher's mechanism and I was able to recover it.I hammered it back into place (its a friction fit) and it has behaved itself ever since, but I check it now every time I wash it.

Also, every time I press a clove of garlic, quite a bit of it squeezes up around the plunger rather than down through the sieve. This is the first and only garlic press I've ever owned, so I don't know if they all do this, and it certainly isn't a big problem, but it bears mentioning.

On the positive side, I agree with the other reviewers. It does a nice job, is hefty and substantial, and is easy to clean.

But keep an eye on that pin!

5-0 out of 5 stars functional, sleek, solid
This product does what it purports to do.Seems sure that it will hold up better than cheap aluminum presses I've bought in the past.Storage of the cleaning tool is a wonderful thing -- I bought this press because I lost the cleaning tool from my previous press (different brand).I trust the Hoffritz name. ... Microplane Stainless Steel Zester
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $9.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

For uniform lemon rind shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The totally flat grating surface makes it easy to move the fruit across the blades, while the rounded edges allow you to set this across the top of a bowl and grate directly into it. Ginger and all citrus fruits worked beautifully with this zester, and the tiny size of individual pieces means you won't need to do any additional chopping. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

  • Made in USA
  • Recommended for citrus zest, ginger, and spices

4-0 out of 5 stars great kitchen tool
This is a must have! It grates lemon peel (among other things!) with ease. It's a great time saver too. Easy to clean, but a warning since this model has no handle; it's very sharp and can be awkward to handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microplane for Maxi+results!
I was actually shocked by how well this zester worked when I first tried it because of all of the negative comments about how it will cut your hand off, etc.

It works effortlessly and is therefore very easy to hold.Just grip the sides, rub it over the fruit, and the zest practically falls off.The best thing is that it removes only zest, 100% of the pulp is left behind.Unbelievable!

The Microplane makes very fine zest that disappears into your recipe, so there is no chopping up zest-like strings as with my old Henckels zester (which is now just a bad memory).

4-0 out of 5 stars Ouchie..
Be careful with this one - there isn't a handle so it's easy to scrape those knuckles!I've done it a few times, until I got the handled version. It works GREAT though, I highly recommend it (or spend a couple bucks more and get the next version up which is even better!). ... Read more

Cuisipro Stainless-Steel Potato Ricer
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $27.99 -- our price: $19.99
(price subject to change: see help)
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

If you've never experienced a potato ricer, it's not too late to make up for lost time. This simple implement doesn't have a digital clock, doesn't blink when it's ready, and doesn't have a tiny computer chip imbedded in it to do all the work. It takes a bit of pressing and squeezing, but the light and airy potatoes that result will be both memorable and worth the work. Place boiled potatoes in the bowl of the ricer, set it across a saucepan (using the ridge on the head of the bowl), and press the potatoes through the disk--that's it. Stir in a bit of butter and cream, dust with paprika, and enjoy. And be sure to try the ricer with other root vegetables, such as carrots, yams, and turnips. --C. Whitney-Ward ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just for mashed potatoes
We would hate to be parted from our ricer - it has become an important tool in our kitchen!

The only "gotcha" about it is that, even though the ricer is very sturdily built, if you make mashed potatoes, or other mashed veggies, with it, they must be completely cooked. Our son tends to undercook veggies and then wonders why it's so hard to use and why the handle flexes.

We cook the veggies until a knife can be easily inserted into them, and don't have his troubles.

And, while it makes great mashed potatoes, with three ricing discs of different sizes, we've used it for other things. One of our favorites is spaetzle, a German dumpling dish.

Splurge!You'll be happy you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely
Absolutely the best potato ricer on the market.Don't use it just for that, use it to strain blanched spinach, etc.If you use it only for potatoes, don't bother chopping them. Just cut them in half and boil. When they are done, put them in the ricer, skin side up and let it do it's thing!Just potato, no skin....the ricer does all of the work!

5-0 out of 5 stars the only one to buy...
this is it...if you know what a ricer will do for potatoes and you learn how to use it, this is the one your looking for. The Williams-Sonoma is plastic, it flexs and it does sloppy work. The Cuispro straddles a bowl, is rock solid and drops in the dishwasher for cleaning. buy it.

Oneida Waiter's Corkscrew

Editorial Review

This handsome, hand-polished stainless-steel waiter's corkscrew is a compact, all-in-one tool for home entertaining that fits easily into a pocket. Folded, it measures a little more than 4 inches long, but it's plenty big and sturdy enough to pop wine corks and de-cap bottles. Unlike most wing-style corkscrews, this one also has a folding foil-cutter blade for prepping the bottle before opening. On the flip side, getting the hang of the lever action for pulling corks does take a little practice, but the result has its own rewards. Salute! --Dale Steinke ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars the cork masher
I am a bartender who opens wine bottles all day long and was looking for a high quality corkscrew to do it in style. I got the style part down as this is well constructed and attractive to the eye, however, nearly every time the heavy gague of the screw will just crush the cork rather than going into it smoothly leaving a cracked cork and dust/bits in the bottle upon removal. I now just keep this around for show and will use my free/promotional corkscrew whenever I need one to actually do something functional. Do not recomend to anyone who wants to uncork a bottle with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Attractive and Solid
I harbor great disdain for tools that break instead of performing their intended purpose. Like my previous corkscrew. It's a matter of design and execution.

This was my mindset as I tried the Oneida Waiter's Corkscrew. I'm pleased with the sturdiness. The screw seems to be well fabricated and is distinctly heavier gauge than I've used before. You feel the screw turn into the cork.

I'm also pleased with the other aspects of design. It fits in the hand. The visuals are clean and simple. It does fine on bottlecaps.

The only thing I would ask for would be a bit more length in the handle. One encounters the occasional tough cork. Having the extra bit of leverage can really come in handy.

Meanwhile I'll be keeping this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good portable corkscrew
This is not the best inexpensive corkscrew for the home -- that honor goes to the Screwpull. But this IS the corkscrew you want to have with you when you travel or as a home backup. The open screw design means you can safely open old, dry corks without fear of breaking the cork off in the bottle. The foil cutter works well, even on those plastic bottle toppers. This corkscrew does require some practive, however, as you need to line up the screw correctly -- not in the center of the cork but more towards the edge, about halfway between center and edge. On one end is a tiny flip-out blade that can be used for cutting off the foil capsule. On the other end is a lever that serves as a brace that rests on the edge of the bottle to give you leverage when extracting the cork. This makes it easy to open a bottle of wine without setting it down on a tabletop. A very nice design overall, and a good price, too. ... Read more
