Editorial Review

KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off. --Betsy Danheim

From the Manufacturer

The Artisan mixer's strong 325-watt motor delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily.

The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl with ergonomic handle is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable.

Unique Mixing Action

The beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This unique mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl.

Multiple Speeds

10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job; from very high to very slow stir. It's easy to select the precise speed needed for a perfect mix.

Versatile Accessories

The flat beater, dough hook, and the professional wire whip add to the versatility of the mixer. The flat beater is the ideal accessory for mixing normal to heavy batters. From cake mixes to firm cookie dough, the flat beater mixes quickly and thoroughly.

The dough hook mixes and kneads yeast dough, saving both time and the effort of hand-kneading. The wire whip incorporates the maximum amount of air in whipped mixtures for fluffier whipped cream and angel food cakes.

All attachments are solidly constructed, and attach easily to the stand mixer.

Easy Clean Up

The pouring shield fits around the top of the bowl and prevents ingredient splash-out. The chute makes it convenient and easy to add ingredients.

The tilt-back mixer head allows for easy access to bowl and beaters. A lock lever holds the mixer head securely in place and the bowl fastens tightly to the base.

Optional Attachments

Optional attachments (sold separately) complete the package to make cooking a pleasure. From citrus juicer to sausage stuffer, KitchenAid stand mixers can handle just about any job in the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy one for your significant other!!!
I bought one as an X-mas gift for an ex-girlfriend that I have a rocky friendship with and now she cooks up good stuff for me all the time!It makes hanging out with her a lot more enjoyable, and she freaked out about the color and it gave her an excuse to deocrate her whole kitchen pink and white. If you gave one of these to your current ladyfriend I bet that you would reap the benefits multiple times a day for a very long time.

It was a very very high quality product and I will look to the KitchenAid brand first whenever I have to buy kitchenwares/appliances in the future.Great color selections, great quality, very good power.

Would highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great essential for the baker in your life....you!
I love the mixer's power, capacity and ease of use. It makes even garlic mashed potatoes heavenly. I selected a black model to match my Viking kitchens without realizing the color would need more frequent cleaning. If you use this mixer every day buy a cover or another color to save time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I got this mixer about a month ago. I've wanted one for years, but always talked myself out of it (too expensive, too big, etc.) After finding a great deal here on Amazon, I finally caved in and let me say, I'm glad I did. I love this mixer! I was worried I wouldn't use it very much, since I already have a very nice bread machine (a "Zo"). I find that I'm using it all the time though. It really is like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. Cookie dough is so much easier. I'm also making bread with it constantly. It's just so simple to throw the ingredients in the mixer and let it do all the kneading. I've been making fresh bread and bagels every week and it's been no hassle. It handles the dough very well and stays put. It's a big heavy machine. The only problem I was having with it was I was finding it very difficult to remove the bowl to clean it after I was done mixing something. My husband suggested rubbing some vaseline on the bottom edge and that has solved the problem completely. Now I can pop the bowl off with one hand. Anyway, if you've been wanting one of these and if you like to bake at all, do youself a favor and get one. You will be amazed at how much easier it will make your life. I only wish I'd gotten one years ago! ... Read more

Bodum 3000-586USA Electric Santos 12-Cup Coffeemaker With Timer, Orange

Editorial Review

Many products are touted for their uniqueness, or how they're revolutionizing this or that, but few live up the hype. Bodum's Santos coffeemaker is different, as it really is unlike other coffeemakers on the market. First off, it uses an electric vacuum brewing process, and secondly it lets you watch the whole thing. Fill the jug with cold filtered water, and place it on the power base. Then twist the funnel onto the jug. Next, add fresh coffee (a handy scoop is included) to the funnel and press the start button. As the water heats up to boiling, the vacuum created between the two parts moves water up the funnel, where the hot water and coffee mix together. Once the correct brewing time has elapsed, the heat turns off and the coffee drains back into the carafe through a nylon filter (nylon doesn't affect the taste of the coffee like paper filters).

In this system, coffee and hot water mingle for the optimum time, providing the best-tasting coffee possible. The process takes around 11 minutes for up to 12 cups of coffee (the minimum amount of coffee you can brew is four cups). The jug and the funnel are both made of sturdy polycarbonate, and the funnel is dishwasher-safe. (Clean the jug by hand, as it's not submersible.) Other features include a 40-ounce capacity, a 24-hour timer, a slide-out funnel holder, a keep-warm feature, and an automatic shutoff feature. Neither the bottom of the jug nor the top of the power base gets hot during brewing, because the heating element is in the middle of the jug's base.

There are a couple of things to remember when using the electric Santos. Always use fresh coffee, ground medium, for best results (stay away from using coffee from a can or powdered coffee), and use one level scoop of ground coffee per cup. So, for a full 12-cup pot, you'll use 12 scoops. After testing, if the coffee is too strong, begin tapering off the number of scoops. Also, remember that there will always be a small amount of water left in the coffee pot during the brewing process. This is a normal safety feature.

When cleaning the Santos, don't scrub the nylon filter clean--it should be rinsed under warm water. The coffee grounds from the upper section can be scooped out into the garbage can or compost using a common kitchen spatula. Then, simply wash the top section with dish soap and warm water. Also rinse the coffee pot with warm water as soon as you are finished drinking coffee. After rinsing, leave the lid open and let the coffee pot air dry. Every so often, clean the pot with a basic de-liming agent.

The Santos also recently won a prestigious gold Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the consumer products division. Award-winners are selected by the Industrial Designers Society of America. There were 1,260 entries from around the world in the contest, and only 44 gold awards were given. --A.J. Rathbun ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!
I used the rest of some mexican coffee beans that I didn't like with my old drip maker to make the first pot of coffee with this Bodum.

I was blown away by the flavor. There are nuances of good flavor without the bitterness.I taste subtle notes of cinnamon, etc.

This is the best coffee I've ever made, and possibly ever had.Again, I ground the beans right before the brew and just used the scoop included with the Bodum per cup as recommended and brewed an 8 cup pot.

Delicious. If you're a coffee snob or just like an absolutely delicious cup of coffee, then you will be pleasantly surprised.I will never go back to drip. Can't make me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee but quality concerns to be aware of
The following begins with our review ofthe smaller Bodum but goes on with updates to the larger one we now own:

I regret that my first online review must be negative, but . . .

Pros:
> Great cup of coffee. We found that changing the filter every month, even if not broken, keeps the flavor at its best. No matter how you clean the filter, a new one, for some reason, clearly improves the taste.
> Quick and relatively easy to use. Clean up is more work than a traditional machine, but the coffee flavor makes it worth it.

Cons:
> Unfortunately, the quality does not yield longevity. We bought ours in April 2004. Since then:
a) The lid tabs broke so if you forget and simply poor a cup, you have coffee everywhere as the lid pops off.
b) By January 05, there is coffee leaking around the bottom of the pot. Clearly the plastic body is failing and it looks like we will need to replace this unit soon.

For the record, we have used this almost daily as our primary coffee machine but everything has been cleaned by hand (no dishwasher cleaning which is not recommended). So we are sure that we have used it as intended, but the construction quality simply was not up to the daily usage in our experience.

Now for the hard part: Finding a replacement that brews as good a cup as this, but one that will last!

ADDENDUM: (Or Addendumb?) Okay, so it is roughly one week later and now the handle to the coffee pot has broken off entirely. A third problem in less than a year! I plan to contact Bocdum so we will see what they say, but it wouldn't seem too unreasonable to expect a coffee maker to work once daily for more than 9 months, right? And to make matters worse, not having found a suitible replacement based upon all my research, we are now awaiting delivery on our new 12 cup Bodum Santos! God help us!

Update #2: You can read the info below and see my concerns. You will also note that we replaced the smaller unit with the larger one, even with the quality concerns. So as a quick update on the larger one, the same seems to be the case - great coffee, but questionable build quality. We have used the unit now for about 5 months and we do use it daily. The tabs on the lid have broken as they did on the small one. So far, that is the only thing, but it is one of those frustrations that can result in coffee everywhere if someone does not know it and fails to keep a finger on the top when pouring! Perhaps the other issues will not surface, but a quick failure of a simple thing like the lid, twice in two units, does not inspire confidence. (I need another cup of coffee!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee a small pain to clean
I have used this coffee maker for well over a year. I have two. One at the house(clear) and one for the employees at a store we own(orange). So, they get used everyday and one of them several times a day. Out of all the coffee makers I have owned in the last fifteen years this one makes the best coffee. Neither coffee maker has had one problem. I think most of the problems in the reviews are probably failure to follow directions. Two things to remember 1) do not make less than the recommended amount of coffee 2)Rinse the pot out after you finish using the coffee maker. The only draw back to this coffee maker is the potential mess you make cleaning the grounds out. This coffee maker gets a 5 for coffee, but I gave it a 4 because of the difficulty in cleaning the top. If you are in a rush, have a hard time operating simple devices, or like a burnt taste in your coffee do not get this coffee maker. If you are willing to follow simple directions and put in a small amount of effort to get great coffee this maker is the one. ... Read more

Bodum 5410-586USA Mini Ibis Electric Water Kettle, Orange
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $25.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The miniature Ibis is sized to boil water for one. Its modernScandinavian design makes it an attractive office companion for boilingwater to make tea or coffee. And, with its reasonable price, thiskettle travels well to college to make instant noodles in a dorm room.Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic with a copper-sheathed,nickel-plated heating element, the Mini Ibis holds a maximum of 27fluid ounces of water (about 3-1/2-cups). It must be filled to a minimum of7 fluid ounces--just enough to cover the heating element--to operate.Plugging the unit in and flipping up the switch below the kettle'shandle turns on the power. The heating process is rapid and quiet: ittakes only 4 minutes to boil 27 ounces of water and the sound is almostimperceptible. For safety purposes, the Ibis automatically shuts offafter boiling and has a locking lid to prevent spilling and a frostedhandle for a secure grip. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hazardous glitz! No biz...
1. Cute design, yes.
2. Small footprint, yes.
3. Faulty design: lid may fall inbecause it's oval, not circular like man-holes; steam leaks because it has no steam guard.
4. Longevity short: yes. My unit lasted 1 yr and the shutoff failed to switch it off with consequent fire hazard.

I wouldn't risk again to burn my fingers or my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bodum Ibi are the BEST
This kettle is IDEAL and a part of my daily a.m. rountine. I rinse out the grounds from the Chambord French Press as the tap water gets hot and then fill the Ibis 1.3 or so inches from the top and start her up. After grinding the beans and putting them into the clean Press the Ibis is boiling and I turn it off and pour it into the Bodum press. The mini Ibis holds exactly the right amount of water for the regular (medium?) sized Presses- 27 oz. I use the Ibis for tea, cocoa, anything. But coffee mostly. Found mine at a clearance section of a gourmet shoppe at an outlet center for like 5 bucks and used it daily (usually at least 2x) for...8 years and 3 months.
Oh, and Bodum rocks.I bought a "cheaper brand" French Press and the top kept loosening and wobbling and there were grounds in the coffee. Also check out the Bodum latte foamer (hand press; can you say 3 minutes?) and tea brewers. I would work for Bodum if they wanted me!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for dorms
I use this to boil just a little water at a time in my dorm room, and it works just fine.It boils quickly and turns itself off when it's done.

I keep it empty most of the time, hopefully that will keep the heating element from corroding.I've had it for a year or so and the element looks fine.

In response to the other review mentioning health problems from heating plastic, current studies have classified it as safe (assuming the plastic is meant to be heated and isn't melting or burning.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
Fiestaware items are objects of beauty that I have found to be virtually indestructible.I have them at my house, and I worked for an upscale wine bar and restaurant that used them for everything...any pretty plate that survives heavy restaurant use is great in my book! And what fantastic colors for food presentation...

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFORMAL SET
We bought these because they were on sale, and it's hard to find black. At the start, they were suppossed to be temporary.
Then we bought extra plates, because we'd fallen in love with them. Not only are they classy and match the decor, but these are tough.I'm a klutz, and these bowls bounce right off of the floor, nothing broken yet, and coming up to a year.
My only complaint is the small size of the cups, and I about never use the saucers, but that's a matter of taste, and there are other sets available.

5-0 out of 5 stars great service, great dishes
I placed 2 different orders for a total of 55 place settings of fiestaware, spread across 10 different colors. The dishes look great. Everything arrived quickly without any hassles & nothing was broken.People who expect to match color off pictures from the web aren't doing their homework.Check colors at local stores & you'll know exactly what you'll be getting. This is the blender of the future. It performs all thetraditional blending tasks (crushing ice for margaritas, thinning icecream) plus it can be used like a food processor (mincing garlic, puréeing peppers). The wide jar is rounder and squatter thanold-style blenders, which makes it easier to reach in and scrape thesides (when the blender is off!). To reduce splatters of strawberrydaiquiri, the Step Start feature starts blending slowly, then picks upto the chosen speed. This blender also comes with a booklet containing75 recipes--my favorite is the Frosty Chocolate Raspberry Latt&eacute.--Dana Van Nest

Editor's Choice:KitchenAid's five-speed blender has a number offunctions that set it above the crowd as our choice for best blenderunder $100. 5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly designed blender
I bought a red one as a Mother's Day gift, but I tried it out just to see if it was worth the price. It didn't disappoint me.
Mom has gone through cheaper blenders at the rate of one every 8 months. This one has the power as evidenced by the much heavier motor base. Jar has plenty of capacity though some fruit lumps will lodge under the blade. Stirring with a chopstick should dislodge the occasional lump. For those who complain about the worn out teeth - you're overloading the machine! Begin in the pulse mode to break up the contents into small pieces before liquifying it - this will prevent motor burnout and the stripping of the teeth. A cheaper blender would have burned out sooner!

1-0 out of 5 stars Rubber Drive Teeth Don't Last
We have had this blender foryears now.We bought it after seeing one that our friends owned. We have used it for milk shakes, smoothies, and crushing ice.Honestly, we loved it.Then the blender our friends owned died. The rubber teeth used to turn the blade disintegrated. We felt bad for them, but never thought such a fate waited for us.Today our rubber drive teeth crumbled into dust.Garbage.Very badly engineered.Don't buy one if longevity means anything to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME...what's with all these competitors' SHILL reviews?
After my Krups died (lasted 4 years) I did a ton of research before I bought this blender, and in the end the choice was just too obvious: there is no other blender in this price range with this amount of sheer power, not even close.

The KitchenAid just blows away the competition from Cuisinart to Braun to Oster to Waring. It certainly was a night and day difference from my old Krups, which took about 3 times longer to do the same work (pureeing 35 oz of bananas and oatmeal with 5 oz of soy milk and yogurt). My sister has the Cuisinart 600watt model and it was also no comparison.

So what sold me on the KitchenAid, despite all the one-star single-reviewers?(NOTE: sure sign of paid shills, aside from the anonymous ones---only one review to their entire history or all their reviews praise one brand and/or attack another brand.)

1.Weight.Simple and consistent indicator of good quality in any electronic device (including speakers, receivers, etc.) is the sheer heft and weight of the thing---I went to a local housewares shop and simply lifted each and every display model. The KitchenAid easily outweighs all the others by almost double.

2.Blade.The KitchenAid's blades are bigger, thicker, and more multi-level than the competition's.Goes through everything in a jiffy.

3.Ease of pitcher movement: very easy to put the pitcher on the machine and take it off, zero twisting---just set it straight down.

4.Nice thick glass on the pitcher.Looks like you could kill somebody with the thing!

My dislikes:

1.Pitcher is only 40oz, my old Krups had a 50oz pitcher.

2.Plastic/rubber lid is kind of a pain to put on and take off, it's so darn tight.

3.I wish they would just have the simple flip switch controls that the VitaMix blenders have...without the VitaMix price tag, of course!

Now I have to say that I've only had this blender for about a month, but my neighbor has had his for two years and has never had the kinds of problems that many of the MYSTERY reviewers here claim, and the guy is a margarita fiend.

Hmmmm...could this just be a case of badmouthing the competition? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cracked case
Had this grinder for 8 months. Two large cracks have formed in the side of the unit, now they are widening and trapping lots of coffee grounds.I'm tossing it and getting a different brand. All form, no function.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice design, poor materials.
I purchased this coffee grinder in July of 2003.I love the design and the color matches our other teal accented kitchen items perfectly. It does a decent job of ginding coffee, but after only 5 months, of once a day use, it started to develop vertical stress cracks in the plastic casing around the top.As of right now (January 2004), more cracks have developed and the initial cracks have become even longer (going down below the interior stainless steel "bowl").Because of all the cracks, the lid now fits very loosely, and I'm afraid that with more use, the cracks will continue to extend downward, rendering the entire unit unusable. The stainless steel cased version may be the way to go, but since we don't have any stainless steel accessories in our kitchen, I will be replacing my grinder with another brand. ... These four cutting boards are made of a unique material that is cropping up more and more in kitchenware these days—FDA-approved, food-grade silicone. Ideal for use in smaller kitchens, these boards are flexible and can be rolled up to fit in any drawer. In addition, they have a non-skid backing to secure them onto any work surface that happens to be available. The heavy-grade silicone stands up to even the sharpest knives so you aren’t able to cut through the boards. For hygiene, the boards are color-coded to remind you to use a particular color for each food you prepare: green is for cutting vegetables, red is for meat, orange is for poultry, and blue is for fish. The boards are all nonporous and won’t retain the odors or flavors of your food. These mats work very well....but lets be reasonable. They are not indestructable. If they were any harder they would prob dull your knives...and they would get negative reviews. Just use a bit of common sense...people :)

4-0 out of 5 stars These really work.....
I was looking for a flexible cutting board that I could pick up, bend, and dump my chopped whatever into the pan. These boards deliver with one small challenge:not all the stuff comes off, so you are left with vegis stuck to the boards and have to scape them off or tap the board on the side of the pan.Not a biggy, really.I like that I can whip one out of the cupboard and slap it down on the counter and make sandwiches on it without having to worry about whether the counter is dirty....we live in a very dusty, sooty city. They are non-skid, which is perfect. They are much easier to handle than my oversized wooden cutting board or my plastic cutting board that I have to put a non-skid pad down for before I use.

They are very thin, sort of like the Tupperware roll-up pastry board. They do show cut marks from the first, but so does any cutting board!I own Henkel knives, both serrated and straight edge, and am not at all concerned about cutting through them.I certainly wouldn't use a meat cleaver with excessive force on one though!

The color coding is pretty.. but I don't pay attention..I use all four for everything. It's nice not to have to wash a cutting board in between steps, that's for sure.Cut/chop your meat, place the board aside and grab another board.Cut chop your vegis, place the board aside, grab another, slice your bread, and so on.

They clean up well and fit in any sink...because they're flexible! :)

My kids also use them for playdough! They will pick up the playdough scent, so dedicate one to just that!

Hope this review helps!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great so far
I'm very happy with my boards. They are easy to use, clean, and stored. As for the person who said they fell apart, that remains to be seen. I'll update later. ... Read more

Editorial Review

FrancisFrancis! espresso machines aren't just a design dream aesthetically. They're also engineered to do much of the barista work for you, removing intimidation and trial-by-fire from the home espresso game. This fabulous-looking all-metal X5 model features a brass boiler and the Supercrema brewing system, pump-driven with 8-9 bars of dynamic pressure. The chrome-plated brass brewing handle maintains ideal temperatures for coffee, while the steam/hot water wand swivels for tidy storage. One of the friendliest aspects of the X5 is its ability to brew espresso with either pre-measured ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) coffee pods or with loose grounds from your favorite bean vendor. Two interchangeable handle baskets are included, one for each method. Three filters also come with the machine for pulling ristretto, regular, or lungo shots.

Measuring 10-1/4 by 8-1/4 by 11-1/4 inches, the X5 is a relatively compact machine, built with flat sides to save space on tight countertops. Keep in mind that it weighs 16 pounds, so you'll want to make a permanent spot for it, and that the 48-ounce water tank is accessed from the back, so you'll need room to work behind it. The sleek little battery-powered clock on the front of the machine pops out for setting and battery replacement. FrancisFrancis! includes a detailed instruction and tip guide, as well as a starter container of Illy Café espresso. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 15 minutes out of the box, and I've got excellent espresso.
I am extremely pleased with this machine thus far.It came with the illy E.S.E. pods, as well as illy ground espresso and a different filter kit to use with ground coffee.I found the instructions easy to understand; set-up was very easy and quick.I had never made a cup of espresso in my life, and within 15 minutes I had a cup of espresso normal and had even steamed some milk to make a fabulous latte.I have the red machine, and it looks so sharp on my kitchen counter. The machine feels very solid, very well-made, and is designed to look good and work well (how Italian!).I read up a lot on this machine at wholelattelove.com, before choosing this particular one.Slate.com also gave it an excellent review.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Fine Espresso Machine
I buy a lot from Amazon but I got this gem refurbished from a local chain.I just have to say it is a great machine, both for ground espresso and pods.I had the older x1 which is not so great (the newer ones have bigger and all-brass groups). This x5 a a little tank and looks great! No problems yet with coffee or steam. The fact that it does not have a triple solenoid valve to prevent the drip (no NOT that one!) is a minor inconvenience. If you can get this on sale here or anywhere it is a good machine! ... Bring out the scones--the Uplift teakettle covers all the bases when it comes to making tea. Its spout opens when the nonslip, heat-resistant handle is lifted, keeping fingers and hands far away from scalding steam. The removable lid is extra wide for easy refilling and simple cleaning. Its 2-quart capacity ensures that there'll be enough tea to go around, even if you're entertaining guests from the other side of the pond. Built of sturdy metal with an enamel finish, this kettle will last through many a teatime.

The Good Grips line is recognized for its durable, nonslip, flexible handles. Ergonomically designed to fit the palm comfortably, the pressure-absorbing processed rubber handles put less tension on the hands while still providing an outstanding grip. Made from the same material as dishwasher gaskets, the handles are slip-proof when wet or dry. OXO recommends hand washing the Uplift teakettle. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this teapot
This teakettle was given to me as a gift. I will say that it does the job.It boils water. But there were many things I dislike about it.I dislike the uplift mechanism to open the spout.I found it cumbersome. The whistle was odd.It had a low sound and reminded me of the sirens some cities use as am emergency alert signal.I usually kept the spout open so I wouldnt hear the whistle.I have now had it for about a year and today when I pulled open the stopper to add water, the handle snapped completely off.

Thats a good excuse to get rid of it.Okay it did the job but there are better teakettles out there.I wouldnt buy another one of this model.I would not recommend this kettle. It does boil water so it worked (until the handle broke).

1-0 out of 5 stars Attention - floaters!Particles and black film
I bought the shiny chrome "stainless steel" model, washed before using, as they recommend, then boiled water for a pot of tea.Noticed my tea was leaving black grease-like marks around my cup and could see a visible slick or film on the water.Poured the rest of the water into a clear pitcher only to find black floaty bits in it.Don't know if it was from the sealer or if they were actual pieces of metal.Cleaned, boiled another pot of water and the same thing happened.Boiled again at length with white vinegar and water.Still, there were floaters.Needless to say, I returned it immediately.Injesting unidentified floating objects with tea is not recommended.

Looks cool, interesting pouring concept, nice colors but water comes out dirtier than water put in.Could just be a problem with the chrome pot.I heart OXO, but will definitely not be buying their tea kettles again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love it, but....
This is by far the best design I have ever seen and I adore my teakettle. There is no spilling from the spout when you poor and you can easily pour one-handed because of the unique tip-and-pour feature that lifts the spout when you pull up the handle.
However, I am saddened by the fact that the removable lid (which is a great cleaning feature) cracked within the first month of owning it. I went back to the store and was given a new replacement lid and it cracked also within about four months! This time the crack is small enough that I am still able to use the kettle but it sure would be nice if such a great design held up as well as it looked.
Perhaps I got a couple of "lemons" but I would have to wonder since I bought first-quality at a reputable store. ... Read more

With a capacity of more than a quart (34 ounces), this electricjuicer can prepare family-size portions with little operator effort.Large and small cones fit on the reamer to accommodate different-sizefruits. 2-0 out of 5 stars Great -- while it worked...
Moving to Texas, we were all excited at the prospect of citrus season, a time when 10 lbs. or oranges costs $1.99.

This juicer, while temporarily adequate, didn't quite live up to our expectations. Juicing tended to take much longer than it should have when more than a little bit of pressure would stop and reverse the juicing mechanism. Granted, this was a minor annoyance.

However, it's less than a year down the road, with only about 10 juicing sessions to its name. The juicer has died. Any pressure at all stops the motor dead.

We're currently looking for a new model.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this juicer
I have had one of these juicers for over five years and love it.I live in Florida and have two orange trees, one Tangelo, one lemon and one grapefruit tree. This juicer easily handles fruit from any and all of these trees. My grandsons, ages nine and three years, love to use it to make their own juice when they visit. My son recently purchased another brand which appeared similar but tells me it doesn't work as well as my Black & Decker so I am currently looking for one for him. I've given several as housewarming gifts to friends who have moved to Florida. There are no negatives to this juicer.

George Foreman GR10ABWO Champ Grill with Bun Warmer, Orange
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $39.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Topped by a bun warmer with a transparent lid in bright orange, this Champ is a variant of the popular George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine. The electric appliance's appeal lies in its simplicity and countertop convenience--not to mention its fat-fighting ability. The double-sided grill (a 6-by-7-inch nonstick cooking surface) cooks burgers, steaks, chicken, sausage, fish, shrimp, and vegetables top and bottom in minutes. (Recipes accompany the grill.) Grill marks not only look appetizing they contribute caramelized flavor. The bottom grill's deep grooves collect fat, and the grill is sloped so the fat runs off into a dishwasher-safe plastic tray stationed under the unit's front. The nonstick bun warmer draws heat from the grill and can be used while food is grilling or by itself. (The entire unit, grill and bun warmer, turns on by plugging in the power cord.) The warmer heats a burger's bun as well as other bread items, including English muffins, tortillas, pita bread, sliced bagels, and croissants. Because the grill is nonstick, cleanup is a snap: just a quick scrape with a plastic spatula (included) and a quick wipe with a paper towel or a sponge. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Burgers, is that really orange?
Hey, i have a blue one, and i have an orange microwave for college, ive been looking all over for an orange one. They call this one bright orange, bright orange??? my micros bright orange, that looks like yellow, id be very dissapointing if they got my hopes up for that thing... oh well tho, EVERYTHING cooked on the grill is AWESOME, and its so easy to just cook indoors, its great, its having an indoor grill that cooks in minutes, 3 minutes for a hamburger! tho it can only hold one burger, the ones on the box must be minis...All in all, AWSEOME product, but orange needs to be orange, ill have to look into that one further...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit small
I like the item, but I wish it were just a smidge bigger -- I can't fit two patties on it at the same time -- just a little more area and it'd be perfect. It's a quick (since you can cook both sides at once), reasonably mess-free way of grilling patties. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BUMBED WITH BODUM
I bought the Bodum Frother, White and received it around April 19, 2005.I used it for two cups of coffee every day for ONE WEEK.It did froth. Then it quit!I am returning it.I get the same froth by putting my sugar and cream in the cup and pouring the hot coffee into the cup.I don't need to pay nearly $16 including shipping.I appreciate Amazon.I do not appreciate Bodum.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work
I ordered this because my boyfriend and I make cappuccino every morning and can't get enough foam from our machine.THis frother didn't give us any froth at all- all it did was stir the milk at high speed.Worthless and a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cool Kitchen Gadget!
I just recived this frother in the mail today. I was very anxious to try it out. Before I purchased the item, I read the review beforehand and became a little suspicious about the performance of this gadget. But I can't resist the super low price, so I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, this tiny frother performed perfectly! It created foamy rich froth. Finally I can make a cafe quality latte at home! I love it. I wish I could discover this product a long time ago. It didn't make a mess like other reviewers claimed. Just a tiny drop spilled on my hand, which wasn't a big deal. I would strongly recommed this produt to my friends and families. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The mechanics of this garlic peeler are so simple, you’ll wonder how you lived without one for so long. Honored at the January 2003 Housewares Show as one of the best products of the year, this peeler is quick and effortless at removing skin from garlic cloves. The tool is shaped like a bulb of garlic in a fun, festive color. Cooks simply drop up to three cloves at a time into the bulb and roll it back and forth across their work surface. The peeler flips inside out to remove the peeled cloves, keeping hands free of garlic odors. This kitchen tool is made of FDA-approved food-grade silicone, which provides a non-skid interior surface that gently pulls peels away from the garlic. SilconeZone’s revolutionary tool turns inside-out for cleaning in the dishwasher and is covered by a lifetime warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Get the regular "roll" kind instead
I bought one of these from Macy's a while ago.Since it's a little cheaper than the other roll type (looks like a toilet paper cardboard tube), I thought I'd give it a try.I had two heads of garlic to peel, and I tried to use this garlic peeler to shuck cloves. It really didn't do anything, didn't matter how many cloves were in the ball at a time.

The way these are supposed to work is that the rubber surface has enough friction to get the garlic peel to stick to it - you do have to roll it on a flat surface in order to crack the peel from the garlic.Unfortunately, because this peeler is round and a little too big, it can't generate enough friction to actually take off the peel.Perhaps this one is supposed to be used differently, but you can't figure that out from the instructions.

Pros: neat looking design, kinda fun to play with, easy to clean (rinse with water)
Cons: doesn't peel garlic, instructions not helpful

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work that well...
I use a lot of garlic for cooking and I've been wanting a peeler. I was disappointed that this peeler did not really get the peel off. Save a couple bucks- just pop your garlic cloves in the microwave for 10 seconds. Peel comes off easy!

4-0 out of 5 stars 2003 Housewares Show, Best Product of the Year
This seems like the same basic idea as the Zak Designs E-Z-Roll Garlic Peeler, same company, so duh!But this one is cute in design. It looks as though the cloves will not roll out of the bulb as you are peeling the cloves. The E-Roll looks like the cloves may roll out. This little beauty was also named one of the best products of the year at 2003 Housewares Show, which gives memore reason to want to try it and give it a FULL rating. But speaking as one who has peeled much garlic and had the smell on my hands for days, thiese rollers both seem like one of those "Why did I not think of that" ideas. ... FrancisFrancis! X3 Espresso Machine, Light Orange
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $399.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The friendly attitude of the FrancisFrancis! espresso machines is not just a cosmetic matter. Designed and assembled in Italy, the line’s welcoming qualities extend to the brewing process too, so making espresso in your home is pleasurable, simple, and non-intimidating. One of the company’s slimmest models, the FrancisFrancis! X3 machine is built to work with you whether you’re an espresso novice or a skilled barista. Trim, sleek, and fun to look at, it features a brass boiler and a pump-driven brewing system with 8-9 bars of dynamic pressure. The chrome-plated brass brewing handle maintains ideal temperatures for coffee, while the steam/hot water wand swivels for tidy storage.

Brewing can be done with your favorite loose grounds or the eminently simple ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) coffee pods, a pre-measured amount in a teabag-like container. The X3 comes with two brewing handles--one for loose grounds, one for pods--and three baskets to let you choose from ristretto, regular, or lungo shots. A tamper is also included.

A good choice for small kitchens, the X3 measures 10-5/8 by 6-1/4 by 11-3/4 inches, so it has a smaller footprint than many models. The water tank is accessed from behind, and controls are on the side. The top of the machine has a handsome mirror finish, adding a pleasing gleam to accent the playfully bright body. Warranted for one year after purchase, the X3 comes with detailed and illustrated instructions for pulling the perfect shot. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps overpriced but a great home espresso machine
When paired with an espresso capable grinder (like the Gaggia MDF) and freshly roasted beans, this machine is an excellent choice as a stylish home espresso machine, producing superb espresso and good milk foaming.A plus is that the machine is designed (in what may be a unique design) to allow you to froth milk first and then brew the espresso without burning the espresso:this can be useful if you like reducing dishes, since you can foam the milk directly in a cappa or latte cup, and then brew directly into that cup.(This produces a cool visual effect in the cup, and it preserves hot temperatures, crucial to taste.)

While you can save money and get equivalent espresso in a Gaggia Carezza, the X3 is my favorite machine which combines true style and good internals (like a quality brass boiler). An excellent choice for your kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine - Overall best buy for the money
This is a great little machine. It is so versatile. You can use pods or grind your own but you will need to purchase a real tamper (57mm) - the little plastic one just doesn't cut it. What is GREAT about this machine (frankly AMAZING) is that you can steam a jug of milk, run a bit of water through the grouphead, and be at optimal brewing temperature within 10 seconds after you steamed.Even the Isomac Zaffiro can't match that.

The espresso quality is okay when using pods. But with a really good burr grinder and the right tamp, you can pull astonishingly good shots with plenty of crema. All this in such a tiny and cute package. ... Read more
